FROM THE PUBLISHER These are unprecedented times, certainly at least for most of our generations. COVID-19 or the “Chinese Virus” has swept across the globe and shuttered our nation in a manner that couldn’t have been imagine by most. And possibly like 9/11 – it will most likely change us forever going forward as “social distancing” becomes a new standard. At this point, most of the businesses in Ohio are closed or closing – and most expect a “total shutdown” order to come along any moment. As we prepare to print, however, there’s really no consensus as to how long things will last. It could last a few weeks, 30 days, or possibly the next few months. Nobody seems to know. The undeniable truth, however, is that we WILL make it through this. And when we have all either gotten the virus or we have beaten it as a society – the pandemic will be declared over and we will be allowed to return to our jobs, the bars, and to our lives. The restrictions will be lifted and we will once again be allowed to RIDE – at least that is what we would like to look forward to. When this time arrives, I hope that we embrace a few lessons that we might take from the experience. First and foremost, that we cannot take as much for granted. Even the most basic items in life – such as toilet paper – should not be taken for granted. And certainly, we should appreciate the random connections and friendships from the open road. We’ve always known that we might lose one or two of them along the way – but for us to be cut off from everyone? The basic ability to ride up to a Bike Night or to the Regional Bike Rally – who knew that could be taken away? As we consider the first few months of our riding season, hundreds of events have already been cancelled. At the very least everything from April seems to be on hold, possibly longer. Some of the smaller events are simply rescheduling for later in the season, but many of the larger events are simply passing on 2020 and looking towards 2021. Not all, though, are going to be able to endure the losses and return. For many of them they have invested for the past year, preparing for this year’s event – only to have it canceled due to a virus from China. Not every organization, promoter, or family can afford to take a hit like this. And what could have been done to prepare for this? How random is it that the 2020 Summit Piston Powered Auto-Rama really was cancelled because somebody in China decided to eat a Pangoline? (At this time – this is a leading theory as to the source of the virus.) I’d like to think that the lesson to be taken from this, with any luck, is simply a confirmation of the undeniable fact that we are all in this together. When it comes time that we can come out of our self-quarantines or imposed lock-downs and the bars all open up – I hope that we all “fist bump”, give each other “the nod” – or whatever it is we will do in the pending age of social distancing and celebrate the bond we have as brothers and sisters of the open road. I hope that we can all take the time and better appreciate the connections that we have and the opportunities that exist out there for us. I hope that our bike nights and rallies swell – as we celebrate both the open road and the riding community itself. I hope that we embrace our local businesses and the organizations that serve us as riders. And I hope that we all learn a greater appreciation for everything that has been taken away from us during this time. In that sense, maybe something positive might come from all of this.

More importantly, though, as I write this – I hope that everyone survives the craziness and possibly celebrates the opportunity that is presented by us all being placed under “house arrest” and our worlds winding down for at least the time being. Lastly, I would like to say a prayer for all of those that don’t have an option of simply hibernating at home through this. For those in the medical fields, first responders, those serving our nation here and abroad, and those that are still going out to complete a task that allows us to remain in our homes – I wish you the best and pray for your safety. Thank you all. Stay Safe – and I look forward to seeing you all out on the road soon! D. A. Smith

THE IRON COWBOY EVENT UPDATES As we go to print, the full impact of COVID-19 and how long the restrictions will last – is unknown. We fully support the effort to flatten the curve and the mandates to stay home for the time-being in order to minimize the impact and protect those that are most vulnerable. We hope, though, that these restrictions come to pass as soon as possible and we can get on with our riding season! Please check out our website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com) and our facebook page (facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio) for updates and direct links to many of the events covered here and within the magazine. We are still going to share a few updates here on upcoming events, and we hope that things are able to proceed as planned for them!

Thunder in the Valley June 25-28, 2020, Johnstown, PA Since 1998, Thunder in the Valley has rocked historic downtown Johnstown PA – which might otherwise be most famous for several devastating floods. Now though, it’s the roar of motorcycles that floods the valleys of central PA during the last weekend in June. 2019 was one of the best years ever for Thunder in the Valley, drawing possibly more than 200,000 bikers – and the hope is that 2020 is even better! Headlining acts include Jasmine Cain, Colt Ford, and Hairball – but it’s really the thousands of bikers that make the rally. Look for more information in upcoming editions of TRO and we hope to see you there! 8

Hi Friends, Here we are back at what most people call the beginning of bike season. March has Daytona Bike Week, Motorcycle Ohio started training the trainers and we are starting to see warmer weather. Unfortunately we already have motorcycle crash statistics. 2019 must have been a little colder out from January first to February 22, 2019 with 10 crashes and 1 fatality. The same dates this year show 42 crashes and 2 fatalities. Something even more frightening, 7 are drug or alcohol related. This can make for a bad year.
Hope everyone has a safe and memorable riding season. If you have not taken a Motorcycle Ohio riding course, please do - it works. See you somewhere this summer. Ride within Your Limits Mike Stock, COB ABATE of Ohio, Inc 419-654-5446 Mikestock419@gmail.com
Just a note to everyone, start the year out slow. Go down to a parking lot and practice slow riding, figure eights (keep making them smaller), quick stops and stopping in a curve. A little practice will make things natural and then when you need to use it, it will be a habit. Speed and single bike crashes are our number one cause of crashes and fatalities. Check out the Motorcycle Ohio Training program at www. motorcycle.ohio.gov. Get trained; it saves lives. Even the best rider can learn something they didn’t know or forgot. It only costs $50.00 and that gets you a 16-hour course, 4 in the classroom the rest of the time you are learning on a bike provided by MO. If you are an experienced rider you can take the one-day course and use your own bike. This is good for riders that have been riding for a long time on a temporary permit. Phone is 800-25-BIKER The Hearing Protection Bill HB129 has been signed by the Governor and in about 60 days will be law. Back in the day a law was passed that said you could not plug both ears. We just had to get it up to date and that took two years. Same with the handlebar height. A few years ago manufacturers were building bikes that broke the law, so ABATE of Ohio, Inc. helped get that law changed to shoulder height. The Governor is pushing for stronger Distracted Driving Laws and ABATE of Ohio, Inc. has been sitting at that table and will continue to work to get a stronger law. Distracted Driving is so underreported that we can’t use the statistics to show how bad it is. No one ever, when asked if they were using their cell phone, will say yes. They give some other reason why they drove off the road. Be ready to do a Call to Action when we post it, which means we’ll tell you how to contact your Legislator and support this law. At the federal level, with the leadership at the MRF staying vigilant, we are on top of the E15 problem. We know that supporters are going to keep pushing for higher ethanol blends so we need to make sure motorcyclists have a say in what happens. Most of all we need proper labels on pumps so we know exactly what fuel we are buying. Join the MRF and get on board to support this issue. Get your calendar out and mark Saturday, May 2, 2020 for the Motorcycle Awareness Rally. It begins at AD Farrows H/D in Sunbury. Sign in starts at 9am and we leave at noon for the Ohio State House. As always we’ll be shooting down I-71 in parade fashion. The Columbus Police will be escorting. This rally is to show everyone that we are back on the roads of Ohio. See our flier for more info. 10 10

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Yahoo!!! Spring has sprung and if you are not already riding a few days here and there, you are getting ready, am I right?! So much about to happen! We have already had great times at the IMS in Cleveland, Swap Meets in several cities around Ohio and our own Seasons of Refreshing kick off, so now it’s time to gear up for the next round of events! For CMA it’s our annual Run for the Son event, where we ride for one day on the first Saturday in May for a fundraiser to support Missions all around the world, providing motorcycles and other modes of transportation….(even a camel!), we send Bibles and other ministry tools to places where there are none, and we tell the world about Jesus by showing a film in their own language called the Jesus film. No kidding! There are people who haul a portable theater on donkeys or on their backs, to places I never knew existed, just to show remote villages about Jesus. Did you know that there are people who don’t even know who He is? And some of them live right here in the United States! A country where the roots of freedom of religion were established! I am guessing you probably figured everyone had some Sunday school teaching when they were little…not so much! And now it’s even harder to find because our children’s children are not usually taken to church. Sad. But on with the season…May is also Motorcycle Awareness month so we don’t want to forget about that!!
COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a non-denominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. Enjoy the family atmosphere, make life-long friends, and join an army of people dedicated to changing the world, one heart at a time in the highways and byways. Visit us at www.cmausa.org for more information. Have a message you’d like to share? If you have a message that you’d like to share with riders across Ohio and the Midwest, let us know. TRO welcomes the opportunity to work with established motorcycle ministries. Feel free to share upcoming events with us as well, by emailing information to Events.ThunderRoads@gmail.com
However, this is April…and this is the month we begin to do more Bike Blessings. We love that! Bike Blessings allow us to not only meet you, but to pray over you, your passenger and your riding season. Oh yes, we do pray for your bike as well, but you are the most important accessory on that motorcycle! A Bike Blessing prayer is the most effective back up you can have. When you cover yourself in prayer, not only during a Bike Blessing, but even before you set out on the road for every ride, you are welcoming our Father, God to be with you on the ride. You open your ability to listen, see and sense the warning signs if there’s danger ahead. Ever get the feeling you should slow down for just a second? And when you listen, something is either in the road or jumps in the way and if you hadn’t slowed down, Bam! Well, that’s a God moment. Some call it instinct, He created you with it. Some call things like this coincidence…I like to say ‘Godincidents’. Regardless of what they are…get yourself covered, find a Bike Blessing near you and go! If you don’t know of one near you, look us up on the web at cmausa.org, click on find a chapter and type in Ohio…you’ll find one! Safe Riding and see you soon! Mary G

SIDECARCROSS – WHO KNEW? A couple of Saturday’s ago, the hubby and I stopped for some wings and couple of cocktails at a sports bar. Some of you may or may not be aware that MAV-TV which is owned and operated by Lucas Oil Products is a TV network dedicated to all that is in the automotive world, including racing of all kinds. One of the TV’s was tuned to MAV-TV. On the screen was something I had never imagined existed in the world of motorcycle racing. Over the years I have seen my share of racing. I have been to numerous road races, supercross, etc. all on asphalt and flat track races run on dirt. However never have I ever seen something known as Sidecarcross. It appears that Sidecarcross has been in existence for over 60 years and is run at top motocross venues across Europe. Now some of you may be familiar with traditional sidecar racing (in the sense that it is what we in the States are accustomed to seeing); a motorcycle with a side car which is wide and having a flat profile. Riders on the sidecar are called monkeys and more often-than-not they are female. In the world of Sidecarcross, the sidecar rider “the monkey” is also often referred to as the passenger. The difference in this type of racing, other than it happens on a motocross course with jumps in the dirt, appears to be that the sidecar is more upright. In both sports the job of the passenger/monkey is to make certain that the motorcycle does not flip. Each plays a more physical role than that of their primary rider. While a monkey on an asphalt sidecar is within inches of the road course surface for the monkey on a sidecarcross motorcycle are faced with different challenges negotiating the jumps over the course. The WSC (World Sidecar Motocross Championship) will have continued coverage throughout 2020. Check out the MAV-TV schedule and take a look. It is definitely something different. www.mavtv.com

Ride Guides and Calendars Support Local Veterans Thunder Roads Ohio and ReasonsToRide.com have teamed with Combat Vets Motorcycle Association, Units 12-1 and 12-7, to produce regional motorcycle event calendars with a focus on Veterans events and Veteran service organizations. These pocket guides include a comprehensive listing of both motorcycle and veteran oriented events being held from April through the end of the year. Proceeds from the Calendars go to support local veterans programs and are coordinated by the CVMA.
The Ride Guides and Calendars will include profiles on Veterans Organizations across Ohio! If you are involved in a Veterans organization – motorcycle or not – we’d encourage you to list any events that you might be hosting in the calendar. You’re also able to include a Directory Listing for your organization along with contact information. This is a GREAT way to get the word out and possibly connect with both Veterans and those interested in helping you with your mission.
OVER 10,000 of the Calendars will be distributed within each region – and they will be emailed out to over 200,000 Riders across Ohio! Veterans and grass roots non-profit organizations are able to list their events in the calendars for only $10-20 in most cases! The goal is to make these guides an extremely cost effective means of getting information out for the various charitable organizations out there – and this is only accomplished with the support of local business sponsors. We do charge slightly more for commercial event listings, and we welcome businesses and larger organizations to sponsor ad pages or possibly the calendar themselves. We believe that these are still very cost effective for the commercial organizations looking to reach both riders and Veterans – and we encourage you to help pass on the word to any companies or potential sponsors that you might know. For more information, please email Events@ThunderRoadsOhio.com Support the COMBAT VETS MA and Local Veteran’s Programs through Regional Motorcycle Events Calendars.

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES The Bike Show Series Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes. Interested in coming out? It’s easy! Just visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and you can register for whichever show you’d like. By Pre-Registering, you are locking in your spot, saving a few dollars, and you’ll even get a FREE T-Shirt!
APRIL UPDATE!
ATTENTION MOTORCYCLE SHOPS / CUSTOM BUILDERS / PAINTERS: For shops interested in participating and possibly exhibiting customer and shop bikes, a limited number of shop displays are available at Thunder Roads Bike Shows. Participating shops and organizations are able to offer special incentives for their customers and members. For more information or to reserve space for group bike displays (i.e. shops, clubs, race teams, etc..) email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

UPCOMING SHOWS! OHIO BIKE WEEK Championship Bike Show, Sandusky OH May 22-31, 2020 BIKE SHOW: Saturday, May 23, 2020 The BIGGEST Motorcycle Event in the Midwest falls at the end of May, and we will be once again hosting our Championship Bike Show on the water the first weekend in Sandusky. This is our first MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW of the year, and you don’t want to miss it. So, mark it on your calendars now… First weekend of Bike Week, Saturday, Sandusky, on the water downtown – see ya there!
Then come on out to the show! Specifics vary by show, but it’s generally an informal process. You’ll meet other builders and exhibitors – and most likely walk away with more than a few new friends in the motorcycle community. NEW for 2020 – NEW Vintage Classes! For 2020, we will be adding VINTAGE RACING and VINTAGE TOURING classes as options for exhibitors taking part in the BIKE SHOW SERIES. As always, we will require at least 3 bikes in these classes to qualify for a BEST IN CLASS AWARD – but several of the 2019 shows already far exceeded this for these classes, with some amazing bikes. Our hope is that we can encourage more Exhibitors to bring out and show their bikes in these classes with us offering new, distinct classes.
Thanks to Dan Hare and Dave Eggert for Bike Show Photos.

Motorcycling in a Pandemic March 17, 2020- I don't usually date my columns, but the information on the Coronavirus pandemic is changing so fast that it might all be out of date by the time you read it. We're doing the best we can. This is not a good time for most of the activities we traditionally enjoy, but what about motorcycling? Thoughts about riding your motorcycle
“Should I buy heated grips or heated
How can we minimize the risk of infection? Dress for the ride- I always wear full gear, including full face helmet and full- fingered non-porous leather gloves. If you want to be extra safe, wear disposable surgical rubber gloves under the leather ones. 2004-01.jpg
As long as you're moving you are safe. You are not close to other people. You're getting fresh air and shaking "cabin fever," which is good for your morale, as well as for your health. Gas is cheap and readily available right now. The risk comes when you stop for a break or fuel at a gas station. First, you handle the pump hose which has been touched by many others. When you go inside to pay or pick up a snack, you encounter other people. If you pay with cash, you get change and a receipt that has been through many hands. This is not a time to travel either. Restaurants are closed for all but take out food. Hotels can put you in close contact with other people and buffets and free breakfasts ought to be strictly off limits. At gas stops, I leave my helmet and gloves on while I gas up. I carry my credit card in a sleeve pocket I can reach with my glove on. 2004-02.jpg Pay at the pump. Do not go inside the store. If you want food or drink, pack it on your bike and bring it from home.
If the situation forces you to be around other people, do not make physical contact and try to maintain a distance of at least six feet. 2004-03.jpg Using the restroom at a gas station/convenience store is probably the biggest risk of all as it is full of contaminated surfaces. You cannot get out of some rest rooms without pulling a door handle or turning a knob. The rest room might not have paper towels- just a blower hand dryer that is like a carburetor for vaporizing pathogens and filling the air with them. 20 20

This may sound barbaric, but stopping at the side of a deserted country road to urinate is safer than using a public restroom. You could also limit your time on the bike so you are home by the time you get the urge. Restrooms in rural public parks with few visitors might be an option. Just bring your own toilet paper, napkins, towels, etc, and keep your hands clean. When you get home, remove your gloves and gear. Get the credit card you used for gas and wipe it off with an alcohol wipe, hand sanitizer or soap and water. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Avoid touching your face unless you have washed your hands recently. That sounds pretty good for now when there are very few known Coronavirus cases in your area, but are there additional considerations if very many other people get sick? Yes. Our medical system will likely become stressed in the case of widespread illness. What if you crash your bike? Will there be emergency vehicles and personnel available to treat you? If you are taken to the hospital, there may not be adequate personnel or facilities to care for you there either. Given the contagious nature of the Corona virus, being in the hospital at the same time there are many virus cases is probably not a good thing. The risk of exposure For our children, Corona virus is not a big risk. Effects for them are mild in most cases and mortality is low, but risk increases with age, rising sharply past age 60. From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Older adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness. Please consult with your health care provider about additional steps you may be able to take to protect yourself. Since the situation changes day by day, go to https://www.cdc. gov/ for the latest information. A final thought: We have some of the best medical care in the world, but our system can still be overwhelmed if we have too many cases at one time. That might be the best reason to stay home and sit this one out. You can find Sport Touring articles from Norm in the Blog / Feature section of ReasonsToRide.com – with new ones added each month. ReasonsToRide.com
Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is proud to present the 2020 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge with YEAR-ROUND opportunities to WIN by hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn simply by getting out to ride and discovering new stops ALL ACROSS OHIO and the MIDWEST!
Checking in at Ride Stops! During the “off-season” most Ride Stops are simply using
digital check-ins. Which means that you check in using Facebook at the location and then post a picture of yourself there. You can include your card if convenient. Include #TRO in your comments or tag Thunder Roads Ohio in the post. If you’re not on Facebook, you can take a picture of yourself there with your ride card or motorcycle and email it to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com
Checking in at TRO Tour Stops! Throughout the year, the TRO ROAD CREW will be hitting rides, rallies, bike shows, and various
events throughout the state – and beyond! In some cases the CREW will be attending national rallies and other events throughout the Midwest – including Michigan and Pennsylvania motorcycle events. Anywhere the TRO CREW is at – instantly becomes a RIDE STOP! There is a listing of Tour Stops in the magazine and online each month. You can sign in on the Ride Stop Clipboard or check in with your smart phone.
REGIONAL RIDE MAPS! First introduced in 2019, Regional Ride Maps focus on a particular area or theme and usually include 15-20 Ride Stops for riders to hit. Generally, it’s something that can be knocked out in a weekend, maybe even a single day of hard riding – or some might take a little longer, such as a trip around the state hitting microbreweries or veterans themed stops. The idea is to make a cool, fun ride that can be “completed” in a more limited amount of time. Once you hit all the stops – you simply send back the checklist, which you can easily do with your phone or old school with the mail. Either way – once we get the form and it’s verified – you’re in the running for a $500 Grand Prize and over 100 other prizes! It’s that easy!
2020 Regional Ride Maps will include – Akron / Canton area, Cleveland, Columbus, Ohio Bike Week, Geneva / Erie, Northwest Ohio & Southeastern Ohio (Email us if you’d like to recommend a stop in these areas.)
How do you Start? (It's really simple!)
1. Get your Ohio Ride Card! (Online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com, at an Event, or at some Ride Stops!) 2. Like Thunder Roads Ohio on Facebook. 3. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or Facebook. 4. Ride out to these stops and show them your card or check in with the #TRO Hashtag on social media. 5. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!
You can request a Ride Card through our website!
You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you
will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like.
As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

What? Well, you know a lot has changed within the last 30 days. Who would have thought we would not be “allowed” to eat at restaurants, bars, or attend our favorite social event? I know my social calendar has changed and I’m sure yours has too. Thankfully, there have been a few days that tempted us to unplug our battery tenders and make our presence on the road. Unfortunately, that doesn’t change what is at hand but we all can do our part to make the best of an inconvenient situation.
What is the AMA saying about COVID-19? As we continue to follow our personal news resources that affect our livelihoods, COVID-19 also has an effect on our hobbies. I looked on the American Motorcyclist Association website and they quote…
In March we experienced major bike events cancelling as well as smaller groups who scheduled meet ups to plan their ride calendar. All have been put on hold, cancelled or rescheduled. I personally, still have my airline ticket and room reservation to fly to Arizona on April 7. Arizona Spyder Ryders organized a 4 day ride near Globe, Arizona, 85 miles east of Phoenix for an epic ride including the famous Devils Highway, Highway 191 with 10-15 mph curves, and ride through the hippy community of Dripping Springs where Jerry Garcia and the Rainbow Children would go there in the winter and work the gardens. The last ride day includes the shore lines along Lake Roosevelt. I’m going to hold off as long as I can before I would cancel, but it sounds like the perfect remedy for “cabin fever”. Staying positive, I believe this will pass. There are still many good days ahead. Perhaps the best days in our life have not even taken place yet! I like that thought! So, knowing that our season is right around the corner, I want to highlight an upcoming ride held annually in Medina. Ride Against Hunger ~ Saturday, May 16, 2020 SUBJECT TO BEING RESCHEDULED PLEASE CONFIRM IN ADVANCE
PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Due to the presence in the United States of COVID-19, an infectious strain of the coronavirus, and governors across the country issuing restrictions on large events and public gatherings, the American Motorcyclist Association strongly encourages AMA-chartered organizers to comply with all restrictions imposed by federal, state and local authorities affecting all applicable AMA-sanctioned activity. Do we have a benefit? I say yes! We are told to social distance. We can do that. We have the open road! We can still give a wave and don’t have to shake hands. Our hands are off of our face and on the handlebars. We can be in groups of 10 or less and we know to keep our distance. Full face helmets are the best protectors, but what about the gas pumps, using public restrooms and handling cash. Sound extreme? Maybe to some, but, using common sense could be our best defender. I may suggest one thing though… you may want to bring your own roll of toilet paper! Don’t count the wheels, just enjoy the ride! Spyder Lilly Luvee La Vonne De Bois
Ride Against Hunger ride has been taking place since 2014. Cups Café director, Tim Van Arsdale, also a motorcycle enthusiast, operates the non-profit organization existing primarily to freely feed the hungry. Statistics show the 1 in 5 children in Medina County do not have sufficient means to eat a daily 24

Lockdown What an incredibly unique time we are enduring. I don’t think any of us could have seen this coming. Perhaps we are all naive in our false sense of security in this world today. Maybe we should have seen this coming. I have prepped in my lifetime before. Well, I hurricane prep annually. But I mean really prepped for Y2K, H1N1, etc. This one, it caught me totally off guard. This is about survival. This is about not only protecting yourself, but your loved ones as well. How bad will it get? I guess that’s anyone’s guess for now. I have never seen the response in my 50-year lifetime from the World Health Organization, as well as our own Government as I’ve seen as of today. This is literally the stuff movies are made of. Now I am usually the first person in line to question authority. I don’t believe in Elected Leaders who become Dictators when drunk with power. But I don’t believe this is that. I do believe in Science. I have the added insight to have an Ole Lady who has worked at the Hospital Laboratory System for almost two decades. The most levelheaded person in my inner circle who says, this is no joke. Not that I really think our Federal & State Governments would go to the extremes they have over a power trip like this one. You don’t intentionally destroy entire industries & a thriving economy overnight on a whim. Especially in
an election year to boot. This is something surreal. This is generally when we in clubs could band together to ensure our survivability, but under this unique situation, we can’t even be around each other for fear we may infect our own Brothers. Yes, this is definitely surreal. I don’t go for Martial Law. I don’t go for Law Enforcement with a Boner just waiting for this day to arrive so that they can Flex their Authority over everyone. But the truth is, I ain’t even mad. The truth is, when this day has finally come, Self Isolation and Limited Travel just make sense. At least for now. The goal being to limit the initial spike in cases that could and would overwhelm our Medical Systems ability to treat the infected. This virus won’t just go away. It will be here forever, just like Influenza, but it will be manageable once we are past the initial onslaught of infected. People will still die from it in years to come, just like the Flu, but not in the vast numbers that we will most likely see over the next month or so. I don’t know if I will become one of the infected. I don’t know if these lungs that I have so recklessly abused over the past 30+ years of smoking will hold out if I do. But I will do what I can to prevent others from dying or becoming sick. So for now, I like you will play it by ear, day by day, and take the bike out for a blast in the wind as I can, but will avoid contact with others, and do my best to knock off some of those items on the Honey Do List while I’m on self-imposed Lockdown! My Road Name is Tabasco, I pray that you all stay safe & healthy, and as always, Keep it Real! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

Goldwing Carburetors Continued. For some reason people who fix things have a burning desire to modify everything they put a wrench to. I for one and extremely guilty of it, and I am ok with it. Sometimes these desgins actually improve the machines operation, some are asthetics, and many make for great stories of what not to do. Once in a while every mechanic has a true moment of brilliance. What follows here may be one of my best moments. Last month I discussed the reassembly of the GL1100 Goldwing carbs, on the GL1000. Due to the boxer design of this motorcycle and a low clearance frame, these carbs are notoriously hard to remove and reinstall on the engine. When I removed them, I was forced to remove the cap off one of the carbs, and a float bowl on another. Somewhere there is an engineer who owes me a beer for that one. Even as an experienced mechanic, it still took me about 1.5 hours to remove the carbs completely from this engine. Installation would have been the same challenge, but, I had an idea!! Standard re-installation procedure is to bolt the whole carb assembly together, and slide it in from the side, then attach lines and hoses. I had the idea that if I swapped the screws on the center air box from Phillips to Allen, I could use long ball end Allen sockets and reassemble the airbox on the bike!!! This would make getting the carbs in, 100 times simpler. This also allows me to install the cables and hoses on one half of the carbs before they were fully installed back into the carb space on the bike. So I took measurements of the sizes of the old screws and stopped by, my local hardware store and bought some Allen screws (aka socket head cap screws) in the appropriate size. I then headed to Skidmark to reinstall it all on the Goldwing. First I test fitted all the screws with my fingers to make sure I got the correct size. Then I began the install. BTW The install is on my YouTube page. From there I inserted the right half into the carb space on the bike, then hooked the choke and throttle cables up. From there was the moment of truth! With a new airbox gasket installed and held in place with a little grease, and the accelerator passage restrictor in place, I slid the left carbs in, then snapped them together. I used a ball end Allen socket and a super long extension to put in each screw. Alignment was simple and easy. The ball end permitted for the tool misalignment. In ten minutes it was done!!!! Ten Minutes!!!!! Game Changer right there!!! From there I popped the intakes back on, with new o-rings of course, and then the air box for the air filter. After that I sealed up all the other covers and shields on the bike. With some fresh gas, and a new battery, the Goldwing fired up after only a few cranks! The bike isn't quite ready for the road yet, because we still need to go over the brakes before it's safe to ride. But rest assured, it will be killing bugs this summer. Thanks to the info at goldwingdocs.com for all the help with this bike. THUNDER ROADSÂŽ OHIO MAGAZINE

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
“I hate to have to tell you this”, said the Doctor in a sad compassionate voice, “but you have been unfortunately been diagnosed with a highly contagious disease, we will have to quarantine you and you’ll only be fed cheese and bologna.” That’s terrible!” Said the distraught young man, quickly sitting down before he could faint. “I don’t know if I could handle being in quarantine What’s with the cheese and bologna diet anyway? I’ve never of such a diet before?!” “It’s not exactly a diet”, responded the Doctor matter of factly, “it’s just the only food that will fit under the door!”
On April Fools Day, believe nothing, and trust no one. "So it's like any other day."

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail. com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!
