FROM THE PUBLISHER Tis the Season!
Tis the Season of Brotherhood, of Friends and Family, of Celebrating Life! Tis the Season of red and green decorations, silver bells, holly, mistletoe, and colored lights. For Christians it’s a Celebration of the Birth of our Savior – a time of peace and hope. To each and every one of you – I’d like to wish you a sincere “Merry Christmas” and hope you have a time of joy and celebration with your friends and family. It’s also a time of transition as we wind down the year and prepare for the next. It’s a time of reflection, as we consider what we’ve done this year, as well as a time of anticipation and contemplation as we look towards 2020. I’ve never really been one for New Year’s Resolutions, but I’m thinking that I will make a few concrete one this year. I certainly believe in setting goals and working towards them – but it’s usually more of a constant thing for me. This year, though, I’m thinking that the year’s end certainly makes an easy line in the sand for starting fresh in a number of areas. As you consider the past year and possible goals for 2020, I’d really urge you to consider new opportunities and fresh starts as well. Maybe you might join me in exploring new roads and discovering new destinations along the way. It’s easy to get comfortable with the same routine and not even realize the ruts that you’ve worn in your life – until you try to get out of them! Let’s shake things up a little and have an exciting 2020 – with new roads to explore and experiences to be had! New friends to meet and stops to discover! And let’s see if we can maybe help a few folks along the way! How cool would all that be?!? Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year! Sincerely, Derek A Smith Publisher

20th Anniversary Edition of Ohio Bike Week May 22 – 31st, 2020 The promoters of Ohio Bike Week have announced their dates for 2020, along with proclaiming that this will be a special edition of the North Coast Thunder Rally as they celebrate 20 years of ROCKIN’ and ROLLIN on the shores of Lake Erie. We anticipate more details to be shared shortly, but rumor has it that there will be a renewed focus on kick-off events in cities across Ohio – then everything shifting to Sandusky for the blow-out, final weekend.
Stay tuned for more details as they are released!
ATTENTION – Photographers or Motorcycle Enthusiasts with Cameras! We might have an opportunity that’s worth considering. Thunder Roads Ohio has opportunities for those interested in attending motorcycle events across Ohio or even just in your own area – and taking pictures! You don’t have to be a professional photographer or even have a fancy camera. You just need to have a passion for riding or photography – or even better, both! We have events throughout the year, all across Ohio and even the US – that we would love to feature in our magazine and online. There’s no way we can cover it all ourselves – so, we are looking to add more contributors to the team. It’s also a great way to help promote charitable events in your area and do your part to help develop your local riding community! For more information email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com
TRO SCAVENGER HUNT
The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association congratulates the men’s and women’s U.S. World Trophy Teams for their prestigious victories at the 2019 Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme International Six Days Enduro. The 94th edition of the grueling off-road motorcycle competition, the longest-running world championship in motorsport, took place at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portiamo, Portugal, on Nov. 11-16. The United States last won the World Trophy title in 2016, its first ISDE world title. The United States had not won Women’s World Trophy title since 2007, the year that division debuted. The U.S. Junior World Trophy team finished second place in its division, and the American XC Gear Club team was the top Club team, rounding out the most dominating U.S. performance in ISDE history. “Congratulations to the U.S. ISDE World Trophy, Women’s World Trophy, Junior World Trophy and the XC Gear Club teams for their outstanding performance at this year’s ISDE,” AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman said. “Our World Trophy team battled hard to win our nation’s second overall ISDE title in four years, and our Women’s World Trophy team put in a dominating performance in Portugal. All of our ISDE riders did a great job representing our country at this prestigious international competition, and we are happy to welcome them home as FIM world champions of off-road motorcycle competition.” The American World Trophy team of Steward Baylor, Taylor Robert, Kailub Russell and Ryan Sipes ended the first day of the event in second place before taking the lead from Australia for good on Day 3. The team’s margin of victory over Australia was 1:45.34. Robert paced the E2 Class, with Russell finishing runner up. Sipes was the second-fastest rider in the E1 Class. Baylor placed third in the E3 Class. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
An American Club Team also found success at the 2019 ISDE. The XC Gear team of Dante Oliveira, Ricky Russell and Austin Walton topped a 124-team field, finishing 18:03.05 seconds ahead of a club team from France. Olivera and Russell ended the event as the second- and third-fastest riders in the C2 class. The U.S. Junior World Trophy team that included Grant Baylor, Ben Kelley and Josh Toth was unable to match the pace of the Australian junior team, settling for second place, 9:13.94 behind Australia. The United States will defend its ISDE titles at the 2020 edition of the event, which takes place in Italy next summer. ABATE OF OHIO, INC.
COB REPORT Hi Friends, a free $3,500.00 Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance policy. Not to mention you will be a member of the Greatest Group of Freedom Fighters in this Great State of Ohio.
First, I would like to wish everyone Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. It is that time of the year to hold your loved ones close and have great family time. As a young person Christmas is a time where you get presents but as you get older, it is a time to visit friends and enjoy good times. In the biker world respect and friendship is what we live for. “CHEERS” It is November as I write this article and the riding season has slowed down, so I hate to give you bad news. In 2019, 3318 crashes and 147 fatalities vs 2018’s 3250 crashes and 140 fatalities. Alcohol related 2019: 293 crashes and 56 fatalities vs 2018: 285 crashes and 54 fatalities. Distracted related 2019: 46 crashes and 1 fatalities vs 2018: 64 crashes and 4 fatalities. Deer related 2019: 140 crashes and 3 fatalities vs 2018: 127 crashes and 3 fatalities. We started the year out on low numbers but as the year went on it just keep getting worse. I think it is from more miles traveled and more riders than we have ever had and that we have so many untrained riders. In January I will report on 3 wheeled, out of state, passengers and nontrained vs trained.
Mike Stock Chairman of the Board, ABATE of Ohio, Inc. Mikestock419@abate.com 614-319-3644
Now I have some great news to pass on. Motorcycle Ohio has been without a coordinator for some time but now we have a new leader. Michelle Piko has been doing her previous job and taking care of the coordinator’s job. Now she has been named Statewide Coordinator for the Motorcycle Ohio program. Michelle and ABATE of Ohio have been working together and she has always been there when we need something. Michelle, you are a great asset to Motorcycle Ohio, and I hope we can continue to work together for years to come. As many of you know it is illegal to plug both ears, including ear buds, while riding or driving a vehicle. This is an old law and was made so that we can hear what is going on while we are driving and riding. We have proven that we need to protect our ears from the wind and with proper ear plugs, we can still hear. In Ohio, HB 129 is our ear plug bill. This bill would allow riders to plug both ears to protect their hearing. It has passed the House and is now waiting to be passed in the Senate. Call your State Senator and help this along. The next big event in ABATE is the 2020 State Seminar Information Workshop and Awards Banquet. This seminar will cover our Legislative Agenda, Safety and Awareness and what ABATE of Ohio, Inc. is all about. It’s a great place to decide if you want to be a member. The 2020 seminar is open to the public and all the seminar information can be found at ABATE.com. You will find a pre-registration form and motel information. This is a great time to get involved in keeping our freedom because as we know, freedom is not free. If you need any assistance, contact me or the state office at 614-319-3644. As with any organization, members are our biggest asset. If you are a member and have any kind of issue please contact the state office at 614-319-3644. We are not perfect, but we will do our best to fix your problem. Membership for 2020 is $20, the same as last year and you get a free bike raffle ticket with your membership and 10 10

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Time for December…. Look! It’s Christmas time again! I love this time of year… not so much the spending cash, but the spending time. Time with loved ones and close friends, time rekindling relationships and building new ones. Time...T-aking I-n M-ore E-motionally.
So, here is my gift to you this Christmas…my time given to you to write this love message about the One Who took time to bring true freedom to us by laying down His life for us. Jesus IS the reason for the season… Merry Christmas from our home to yours! Mary & Rex G.
Holy smokes the lady mentioned emotions!! Close the book it’s about to get deep in here! Not really. Just think, if we didn’t take the time to be close to anyone, we wouldn’t have a clue who we were sitting next to. Time is a very valuable part of our lives, all of us use it, but I ask you, how are you using it? Are you giving all the time necessary to your family, friends, job, church (if you have one), yourself? Or is your time clock out of balance and you find you can’t give enough or don’t have enough to give? In the ages gone by, we were given a gift of a child born to a virgin, Jesus. He spent His brief time on earth showing the love of our Heavenly Father and teaching us that, in due time, He would make room for us to share His love and home for time eternal. That promise still holds true today. He teaches us that if we give just a little bit of time to Him, He will balance out the rest of our lives to be able to give all the time necessary to other areas of our lives. Time isn’t something that should be wasted or taken advantage of. It’s a gift and, when used correctly, is the gift that keeps on giving. Time with others feeds the emotional part of our being. It can be a good feed or a negative feed however, each minute that goes by can bring a positive even when it doesn’t start that way. Am I confusing you? Believe me, it’s not intentional. You see when God created us, He did it so He would have someone to spend time with. He made us as three parts, spirit, soul and body. The soul is made up of the mind, the will and the emotions. A mind to think and create, the will to choose good for our lives, and the emotions to share our heart with each other. God shared His heart with us by sending His Son, Jesus to not only live among us and show us that a right standing life with the Father could be done, but to also give of His self by dying on the cross so we could live with Him eternally. That means we have opportunity to spend time with Him if we choose to lay down our own lives to pick up life in Him.

KENNEDY STYLE TWO WHEELS!!! My husband and I headed to Key West in October with a stop-over in Daytona for Bikertoberfest. As we were packing light for the Keys, we did not take the bikes but only our Yamaha Zuma 125. Quite the experience to ride down Main Street on a 125cc scooter. Tons of odd looks. Plenty of laughing at us as we slid into a parking spot near the Boot Hill. As you get older, you realize what others think really does not matter. In our minds two wheels are two wheels – regardless of the make or size. Biketoberfest crowds did seem lighter this year. I guess the rain and tornado warnings early Saturday caused more than a few to pack it in and head for home. However, the rain cleared early Saturday afternoon and it was business as usual with Main Street jumping. We got the chance to catch up with some friends who now make their home in Jacksonville. They hopped on their bike and made the short 1.5-hour ride to visit. Bands were playing and cold beer was flowing. Another Biketoberfest rally was nearly in the books. This was a quickly planned road trip. I am one of those people that needs to have a plan. My husband on the other hand likes to fly by the seat of his pants. This meant for Key West there would be no hotel room, just our tent popped up in the back of the truck. With the scooter on the rack mounted on our truck hitch, we headed south Monday morning from Daytona to Key West.
by: Denise Kennedy, TRO
Years ago, we used to take our bikes down through the keys. Parking is a premium even for a motorcycle. Scooter parking however is plentiful. At this time of year Key West is alive with Fantasy Fest. I guess you would term it an adult themed Halloween on steroids. From the Zombie Bicycle ride to the Bud Light Fantasy Fest parade on the last Saturday there is body paint, lots and lots of body paint everywhere you look. We spent days by the pool at the campground and at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park beach. Restaurants and Key West nightlife were only a short scooter ride away from our campground. Nights were spent enjoying the warm salt air and people watching. Those living in Key West partake in the festivities regardless of age and they love sharing a slice of their island. Whether you decide to check out Fantasy Fest in the future or want to experience a little bit of the Caribbean without leaving the United States take your two wheels and enjoy. As we head into the holiday season, I want to take this opportunity to wish our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
If you came to Daytona in October it would be worth the trip to head south. Once you get past Miami/Homestead it is a totally different world. Turquoise blue water and sunshine sparkling like diamonds off the water are the norm as you head down U.S. 1. A cool stop off along the way is right as you start down U.S. 1. A quick left turn onto Card Sound Road leads you to Alabama Jacks which is a great little place on the water to have a fish sandwich and a cold beer. It is also a way to avoid some of the stop and go traffic on U.S. 1 as you come in the back way into Key Largo. The road south takes you through the famed Florida Keys with lots of interesting places along the way to explore. 14 14

The Bike Show Series
Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes.
Interested in coming out? It’s easy!
Just visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and you can register for whichever show you’d like. By Pre-Registering, you are locking in your spot, saving a few dollars, and you’ll even get a FREE T-Shirt!

“Should I buy
Beat the Cold and Extend Your Riding Season Cold weather is upon us
Due to the considerable wind chill at highway speeds, electric gear needs to produce a lot of heat. Jacket and pants liners typically consume about 75 watts apiece at full power, so they must be hard wired to the motorcycle electrical system through a controller.
As I am writing this column in mid November, it's starting to rain with about two inches of snow coming overnight. It will be a couple of days before it gets above freezing. Parked Motorcycle Syndrome (PMS) has officially arrived. April's better riding weather is about five months away. Is there any hope for riding opportunities before then? Yes.
Heat controllers
There will be breaks in the weather during winter-- temperatures will not be in the 70s but there will be days when you can enjoy a ride if you and your bike are prepared.
Bike modifications Most sport touring bikes already have integrated fairings and windshields, but there is room for improvement. An obvious option is a taller windshield. I installed the Yamaha Touring windscreen on my FJR, which is four inches taller than stock. The electric control gives a range of up and down motion so I can lower and see over it if it's fogged, yet still be able to raise it above the top of my helmet to reduce cold air on my face and upper torso.
Heat controllers allow heat level to be easily adjusted on the fly. They adjust heat output by turning the power to heated gear off and on about once per second. A knob on the controller adjusts the percentage of time the power is on, from a low of a few per cent all the way to 100% when the control is set to maximum. There are several controller styles to choose from. Some have a wireless remote control, allowing the controller to be wired and mounted under the motorcycle seat with a connector for the rider to plug into. The wireless control module can be clipped on a pocket or anywhere that's convenient for the rider. I prefer a simple controller, perched on top of the clutch reservoir. I can easily reach the knobs to adjust heat level, plus see and reach the connectors to plug in to my gear. If you use both heated jacket liner and pants, get a dual controller that allows independent adjustment of each.
Keeping your body warm 1. Get a heated jacket liner- Don't waste money on a vest when you can have the benefit of heated sleeves. The sleeves also
I add hand shields to directly cover the handlebars, making the heated grips doubly effective. The stock fairing lowers do a good job of shielding my legs and feet from the cold air blast.
Dressing for the ride First and foremost, keep your head warm. Your head is the most vulnerable part of your body in cold, moving air, and the rest of your body gives it highest priority for maintaining temperature. Exposing your head to a 50-mph cold blast of air rapidly depletes your body heat. Wearing a full-face helmet, always a good idea for safety, also provides insulation for your head that helps conserve body heat. Add the right jacket, gloves, pants and boots and your riding comfort on cold days increases dramatically. Electric heated gear The traditional way to dress for cold weather is to wear multiple layers, adding or shedding them as temperatures change. I did that for many years, but there's a much better way. Electric heated gear is an excellent investment for extending your riding season. Heated jacket and pants liners are light and relatively thin, providing freedom of movement and minimizing the number of clothing layers. 22 22

contain handy connectors to plug in heated gloves if you wish to use them. Notice how this jacket liner has a tall collar. It's heated too so when it's really cold, you can flip it up around your neck and extend its warmth almost to the base of your helmet.

2. Always start with a base layer such as underarmor shirt and tights. Put the jacket liner on next so it is close to your body. 3. You need to block the flow of outside cold air, so wear a jacket that is rain and wind proof. Gore-tex jackets and pants are an excellent choice.
needed, but you can add heated socks or foot pads if you wish. Like heated jacket liners, pants have handy power connectors for socks so all you have to do is plug in and you're ready to go.
4. It's best if the jacket is a tight fit that holds the heated liner firmly against your body for best heat transfer. 5. Always use a controller to set a comfortable heat level. 6. You may find that the underarmor, heated and jacket layers are all you need. If you want more warmth, put additional insulating layers between the heated liner and the jacket. 7. A heated jacket liner can be helpful in warmer weather as well. If you have a long travel day in the rain, the heat will feel good well into the 75-degree range. 8. I like to use the heated liner with my summer mesh jacket. On spring and summer days that start out as cool as 55 degrees, I can begin with the heat on and dial it back as the air warms up. The liner/mesh combo remains comfy into the upper 70s, when I take a break and put the liner away.
Legs and feet My FJR fairing has pretty good wind protection for legs and feet, so keeping them warm is a bit easier. I wear a pair of unvented Revit waterproof armored pants year-round, with Under Armor tights as a base layer. This combination is good from 90+ degrees all the way down to about 55. At that point, I add a pair of Gerbing heated pants 1912-05.jpg between the Under Armor and Revit outer layer. The Revit pants come with a nice insulated zip-in liner, but the Gerbing pants are a better choice since I can dial in as much or little heat as I wish. If I'm facing an all-day ride in very cold temperatures, I can add the Revit liner between the Gerbing and Revit pants for an extra layer of insulation. What about keeping your feet warm? First, if your legs and torso are toasty, your feet already stay warmer. I have a pair of Sidi Gore-tex waterproof boots with some built-in insulation that I wear all year round with compression socks. When temperatures drop, I just add insulating socks. It's a good idea to buy boots that are a size bigger than you normally wear so heavy insulated socks don't make the fit too tight. That's all I've THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE
Too much of a hassle to bundle up? Parked Motorcycle Syndrome just gets worse as winter drags on. Before long even a 40-degree day will look pretty good!

Independent Shop T’s and Gear The Holiday Season is a time of sharing and the giving of gifts between friends and family. If you have riders on your list, we would like to offer some suggestions for unique and practical gifts that any rider might appreciate. The following pages are a mix of items and services offered by Thunder Roads Ohio and some of our partners. Some of our suggestions are practical items that a rider might not consider or just over look. An AMA or ABATE Membership, for instance, is something that any biker or enthusiast will appreciate but might not get themselves. Helmets, good gloves, or protective riding boots are other items that riders can always use – but often neglect for themselves. It’s also worth mentioning that you might consider getting a little something for your “Iron Steed” as well. People think nothing of getting gifts for dogs and cats – so why not for your bike? And as luck would have it, we might have a few suggestions for stuff your bike would love as well!
AMA Membership American Motorcyclist Association Membership offers so much!
If you’re looking to get a cool motorcycle themed shirt or gear for your favorite rider this Christmas – don’t pick up anything from the stack at the Big Box Storeespecially if it features any of the TV bike shops or soap opera clubs. You really don’t want to be the guy or gal riding up in your SOA or Orange County Choppers shirt to Bike Night. And you don’t really want to be responsible for sending out your loved ones like that either!
There are numerous Bike Shops featured here in this month’s mag – including
A MUCH cooler option is a shirt from a local independent bike shop. A shirt from the local shop will be appreciated much more and certainly convey much more thought and appreciation for the iron in the garage – not to mention the local motorcycle scene!

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE THUNDER ROADS OHIO
VIKING Lameller Extra Large Hard Bags “Universal Fit, lockable hard saddlebags… at a reasonable price!” Jess N, TRO Contributor, Motovlogger Host of “Her Two Wheels” on YouTube Already having purchased my first set of hard mounted saddle bags, I realized very quickly that I was inevitably going to need more space. I recently upgraded to the Lamellar XL hard shell saddle bags manufactured by Viking Bags. My previous bags by Viking worked perfectly fine, I just needed more space for my long distance camping trips. Not only do I have Viking Saddle bags, but a sissy bar bag and hard shell book bag as well. I realized I needed more space on my way to Babes Ride Out East Coast in Narrowsburg NY 2018. I had a heck of a time getting my clothes to fit in the medium size saddlebags. (I have since learned that I didn’t need half the clothing I brought!) I use my sissy bar bag for the bulk of my moto camping gear such as hammock, sleeping bag/ pad, toiletries, lights, pillow, tools, etc. My saddle bags would hold items like all my clothing, easy access food and drink, maps, etc. When I was first researching saddlebags I was pleasantly surprised to learn that all Viking Bags come with the mounting hardware. That being said, they are made for a universal fit and may need custom modification to your bike depending on the setup of your controls like turn signals and license plate location. When I received my new bags I was shocked at the speed of the delivery. They came individually packaged in cloth bags and didn’t have a scratch on them. The main features that have always attracted me to the brand was the fact that all of their bags are lockable and relatively affordable. The breadth of assortment was another feature that kept me on the hunt for upgrades. I have a very simplistic aesthetic and gravitate towards “sleek and black”. After installation I took a step back and said, “Yes! She’s complete!” (in reference to my bike and all the aftermarket upgrades.) The new bags fit the flow of my 26
fender so perfectly you would have thought they came stock from factory. Not only were the bags larger than my previous, they also came manufactured with “cutouts” for my shocks helping improve the seamless flow of my bike. The best part, other than the increased size, is how they hinge open. The new bags fold open from the inside out making access while having a sissy bar bag stuffed full on the seat much more accessible. They are water resistant and lined with a leather material to help reduce impact vibration on your items. I personally carry my laptop and camera gear without worry.
excited to inform my viewers that Viking has been gracious enough to give me a custom coupon code to save you 25% off your entire purchase! Simply use the code, ‘HERWHEELS25’ when prompted at checkout. If you wish to watch my review on these bags specifically, you can follow the link here: youtube.com/c/HerTwoWheels You can order Viking Bags online at VikingBags.com
After having experienced one set of saddle bags, a sissy bar bag, and a hard shell book bag from Viking, it is safe to say they are a brand that keeps me coming back and fits my budget and lifestyle. I'm so excited and ready for my moto trips of 2020. Having the increased space is going to make the simple luxuries of home that much easier to bring along. I’m also

Quality Boots Far too often we scrimp on the little things that can really make a difference in our lives. And there’s probably no better example of that than when it comes to footwear – especially in terms of riding boots. Proper, comfortable riding boots can make all the difference after a long day of riding, working, or simply walking. Far too often, though, we scrimp on boots refusing to spend a few more dollars for a step up in quality that might transform our entire day. For something classy – nothing jazzes up an outfit like a nice pair of exotic boots. For ladies or men, stylish cowboy boots can transform your t-shirt and jeans outfit into the stuff of rockstars.

Range Membership / Classes Purchasing a gun is only one step in a long process leading to proficiency and confidence with that firearm. This process should include plenty of training and practice – and that means time spent at a range, preferably with someone that really knows what they are doing. Far too many people just head off to the range with their gun – either by themselves or with another person that is either unexperienced or may have never received structured training. This leads to bad habits, bad experiences, or at worst – bad accidents. A range membership or certificate for professional instruction make a great gift for just about any adult. HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE THUNDER ROADS OHIO
The SENA 20S EVO It will change the way you ride. “We are bringing this back as one of the “sure-fire”, life changing gifts that you can give a rider. Especially if you’re giving it as a gift to someone that rides a cruiser – usually without a helmet. For many, the SENA makes communicating with others and listening to music so natural – that it justifies wearing a helmet, when safety alone isn’t enough.” As you ride with different folks, on different styles of bikes, and push the envelope in terms of your riding experience – you are going to come across different things that change the entire way you ride. I scoffed for years at the idea of riding with a radio on my bike. Why would I ever want that? I listened to the road and wind. I rode that way for more than 15 years. Then I found myself on a touring bike with a complete sound system – and I gotta admit I liked it. I’ve had similar experiences with heated grips and a number of other “riding advances” that I never ever thought I would want. And now I will add a Bluetooth headset to that list. In particular – the SENA 20S EVO. After in-depth discussion with the folks at Iron Pony and our resident expert on touring equipment – Norm Kern, MSTA Editor and TRO Sport Touring Contributor, I decided to try a SENA 20S EVO system when I joined Norm for the MSTA Fly-By Rally this Fall. The headset installed easily onto my helmet, in fact most modern helmets are designed to accommodate Bluetooth headsets – if they don’t already have them integrated into it. Regardless, the main mount goes over the bottom edge of the helmet with wired speakers to place inside the helmet and a boom mic that extends out towards your mouth. I ride with a full face / modular helmet (HJC) and it was very comfortable – barely knew it was there. While riding – it changed the entire experience by allowing me to effortlessly communicate with those I was riding with. And I’m not just talking about the person riding behind me. Even if Norm had hightailed it over the horizon – leaving us in the dust – we could still carry on a conversation as though he was sitting next to me having a pint at the corner pub. The system was amazingly clear, and the voice activated system seemed flawless. Even more incredible was the unit’s ability 28
to play music from my phone – and then seamlessly integrate the conversation that I was having with other riders. It’s also worth mentioning that the units are designed to be used by Neanderthals with gloves on – without any extensive tech abilities. You literally just have push a button – or even shake the units – for them to link with other units and their riders. It was an entirely new experience riding while talking with other riders – on other motorcycles possibly separated by miles across the group. We were able to have technical discussion on our riding approaches, give warning about hazards on the road, and plan our route / stops without having to actually stop. We will include a more extensive review of the system and all of its features in next month’s magazine – but I wanted to make sure that I included a mention in this month’s Gift Guide. The SENA 20s EVO is a proven system with significant updates – really making it the gold standard for many serious riders. A single unit retails for approx. $300 – while a combo package with two units sells for approx. $550 online at www.IronPony.com You might even find better deals over the holidays. They aren’t cheap – but I can’t think of anything else that would impact your riding experience as much if you ride with others, or simply

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE THUNDER ROADS OHIO
THE X-BOX SLAYERS The Harley-Davidson IRONe / Stacyc E Drive Balance Bikes Since first seeing the Stacyc electric balance bikes at the 2017 AIMExpo in Columbus, we’ve thought about getting them for the youngest members of our crew – Cole and Tyler. Two years later they are 5 and 7 – and we pulled the trigger and picked up a pair of the Stacyc’s. Our only regret – that we waited at all! The Stacyc’s are designed to introduce kids to two wheeled travel. Tyler, just turning 5, was still on training wheels and wanted nothing to do with taking them off. After watching his brother riding around on the Stacyc – he jumped on and within 5 minutes was ripping around the yard like a Pro. No exaggeration at all – he simply twisted the throttle and was off riding with his feet off the ground within 10-15 feet. And he never looked back. The bikes are offered in two versions – a 12” and a 16” version. This refers to the size of the tires, but there are a few other differences as well in terms of the power output and the battery provided. According to Stacyc – the 12eDRIVE is perfect for 3-5 year olds under 75lbs with a 14-20” inseam, while the 16eDRIVE is intended for 4-7 year olds also under 75 lbs – with a 18-24” inseam. On the website and all of the dealers we checked with – they were consistently priced at $649 for the 12” model and $699 for 16” model (for either the H-D or Stacyc models). Obviously there’s some overlap in terms of the kids they are intended for – and there’s only $50 separating the two models. So, if there’s any doubt in your mind – we would recommend you go with the larger 16” sized bike if your child fits within their recommended guidelines – REGARDLESS of their previous riding experience. All of the bikes have very simple controls that allow parents to limit speeds to help the kids feel comfortable and safe on the bikes. So, it’s a simple matter of toning the bikes down for a younger rider, and with the adjustable seat – it should be easy to fit as well.
In March of this year, Harley-Davidson purchased Stacyc and introduced two Harley branded versions of the stability bikes. A.D. Farrow Harley-Davidson in Columbus had already been a dealer for the Stacyc bikes and had been a huge advocate for the bikes. “These are great way to help build the next generation of riders, and bringing the fun and enjoyment of riding to kids everywhere.” For comparison, we picked up both a Stacyc 16” and a Harley-Davidson eIRON16, Harley’s version of the powered balance bikes. We could not find any difference between the two – other than the obvious Harley-Davidson name and bold orange and black colors.

What Others are Saying – “The one major problem we experienced with the STACYC .. was getting the kids off the bike when it was time to eat dinner or do homework. BOTTOM LINE: The Stacyc..electric balance bike is an amazing machine!” – DirtBikeMagazine.com “From an adult user’s perspective, the Stacyc is amazing. Having taught young riders on gas-powered motorcycles prior to this test, we’d say the learning curve is much quicker on the Stacyc. The electric powertrain reduces a young rider’s anxiety and fear. Without the sound and heat of a gas engine and a much lower overall weight—the 16eDrive weighs 19 pounds with battery—kids feel more comfortable twisting the throttle and getting going. And this makes us happy. A true win-win.” Justin Dawes, CycleVolta.com “With my 5 year old resisting bicycle training, I decided to give this a shot. Amazingly, in less than 5 minutes, he was able to ride the STACYC on two wheels, despite not yet being able to ride a bicycle! … the STACYC design is awesome and our son is VERY happy with his new "electric motorcycle." - Ryan L “Got this for my 5 year old son and it has been fantastic. Has been great for the entire family as now the little guy can keep up on the longer family rides. Made and easy 5 miles on single battery (relatively flat). Charging system so easy a 5 year old (and probably younger) can use it, he swaps his own battery and is back riding in seconds. Highly recommended this for anyone looking to motivate their kid to spend more time, train and just plain have fun on two wheels!” – K Man
WHAT IS A STACYC™? STACYC™ Stability Cycle is an Electric Powered Balance Bike. STACYC was designed to be a non intimidating way for young children to lean and enjoy riding two wheels. A STACYC™ is the first “powered” balance bike and is confidence inspiring for a child who has only been walking for a short time. If your child can walk, they can begin to ride a STACYC™ in the non-powered mode. Once your child is proficient in coasting and braking, they can begin the last “powered” phases of the process. This will bridge them through the awkward years of physical development where the leg/torso ratio does not allow for a low and stable seat height in a regular bicycle. The STACYC™ was designed to allow children to gain all the skills of riding bicycles and while allowing for an extremely low seat height and low weight, providing thousands of hours of seat time, not easily attainable with a regular “kids” sized bicycle.
Selected as one of the “5 Best Motorcycles to Grow Motorcycling” by Cycle World Magazine. “While not technically motorcycles, StaCyc's electric-powered stability cycles have a twist throttle and rear brake to teach youngsters skills to make the jump to a motorcycle sooner and easier.” – Cycle

The Pan America and the Bronx:
Two New Harleys for a whole New World. Harley-Davidson is not messing around. It's on a shoot the moon mission to save itself by metamorphosing into a modern motorcycle company, while trying not to tread on its "badass" Boomer cruiser base in the process. Step one: the all-electric Livewire, a next-to silent streetbike. And now, at EICMA, far from the stars, stripes and apple pies of home, the company has released its next two efforts to find new relevance in a changing age. One has to wonder how these things would've gone down at an American release full of die-hard Harley fans who hold the brand's old-school image very dearly. The new bikes are an adventure tourer and a streetfighter, both powered by a new Revolution engine platform. These will be 60-degree V-Twins, naturally, but liquid cooled and with dual downdraft throttle bodies. They'll also make a lot more power than Harley riders are accustomed to, by revving significantly higher than the big cruiser donks. The engines are narrow and compact, they form part of the frame for engineering purposes, and they feature internal counterbalancers to cut down on vibrations.
The Pan America adventure tourer and the Bronx streetfighter were Harley-Davidson's big reveals for EICMA 2019
The 1250cc Revolution Max engine
The new bikes will have to stop as well as they go, and Harley has teamed up with Brembo to create a special set of radial, 4-piston monoblocs that should set new braking standards for the marque. Harley's key input seems to have been minor and mainly aesthetic, adding a few "softer curves" to the caliper designs. Hopefully that's all; Brembo knows a thing or two about the actual braking part. Likewise, H-D has teamed up with Michelin to develop special co-branded tires for these two bikes, presumably to drum a few extra bucks out of its consumer base when it's time for new hoops. 36
The 2021 Pan America Adventure Tourer Decked out with big hard luggage, the Pan America looks ready to conquer continents First up, the adventure machine. The Pan America 1250 is H-D's answer to the R1200GS, the 1290 Super Adventure, the Super Ténéré, and the rest of the colossal "big chook chasers" that make up the ADV segment. While late to the party (everyone else seems to be refocusing their efforts

toward middleweight adventure tourers), the Pan America will use a 1250cc "Revolution Max" engine, with which Harley is targeting an output over 145 horses and 90 lb-ft (122 Nm) of torque. The company calls this its "two-wheel multi-tool, built to endure, designed to OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
explore, and engineered for the unknown." It looks the part, with its beefy bash-plate, touring screen, barkbusters, massive three-box pannier system, spoked wheels, chunky off-road tires, comfy looking dual seat and an exposed subframe that looks terrific to strap a tent to. There's no weight figure as yet, or indeed a price, but Harley has committed to getting this 2021 model into stores in late 2020.
2021 Pan America | Harley-Davidson
The Bronx 975 Streetfighter Every bit as interesting is the Bronx, which takes some of the Livewire's snub-nosed proportions and marries them with a 975cc version of the Revolution motor and a few licks of the kind of flair Erik Buell brought to the Harley stable in the late 1990s with bikes like the White Lightning. This is no Buell, though. H-D presumably still owns the patents on some of Buell's outrageous ideas, but the Bronx has no rim-mounted disc brake, underslung exhaust, fuel-in-theframe or oil-in-the-swingarm business. Indeed it's a fairly conservative effort at a streetfighter, especially in an era where things like the Super Duper Duke and Tuono V4 walk the Earth. Power and torque figures are targeted to be at least 115 horses at 70 lb-ft (95 Nm), respectively, which should be fun enough provided it's not much more than the 500-

odd pounder (225-odd kg) it looks like it might be. Harley calls it a middleweight, but one with an "unapologetic attitude." We feel it'd be a bit less apologetic if it had access to the full-fat 1250cc motor, but it's a nice enough looker to sell well if it rides well, and no doubt it'll look and sound much more Harley-worthy and thunderous once owners have bled their way through the options catalog. 2021 Bronx 975 | Harley-Davidson What are your thoughts? Where’s the Love? I am writing today just coming off a horrible weekend. I received a call early Saturday morning that one of our own died in the wind on Friday night. Our club brother was coming home from his company Christmas party and for whatever reason that may remain forever unknown, he failed to navigate a curve and struck a street post. Another club brother with whom he lived with and worked with had arrived home from the same party just minutes before and heard the crash. He and his ole lady jumped in their truck to investigate the sound and found our brother laying in the grass next to his demolished bike. They gave great effort but were unable to get him breathing again, and he passed right there in his arms on the side of the road. I don’t write this looking for sympathy. We most likely have all lost club brothers if you’ve been in the scene for any time. This one currently stings. When I last saw Petey a week ago, we shared some laughs and smiles. He had a heart of gold. A GIANT of a soul in a small statured body. He never met anyone who wasn’t instantly his friend. I have never heard him speak ill of anyone, ever. I write this as a simple reminder to us all. Do not wait to tell your club brothers that you love them. In fact, generally my last words spoken to any of my club brothers when I depart them with a hug and handshake is, “Love ya Bro”. This isn’t a canned exit statement. I mean it. But how many of you don’t say it, or maybe you say it but rarely show it? Do you only see your chapter club brothers at
club functions and never anywhere else? Do they have kids? Have you ever met them? Have you ever cooked out at your house for your club brother? Have they ever been to your house, or even know where you live? Or visa versa? Look, I know there are many ways to show love. Tough Love. Intimate Love. Quiet love. Conversational Love. Dedicated Love. Everyone is different about how they give and receive love. I might suggest that you don’t waste one minute of one day not showing or telling your club brothers that you come into contact with that you love them. We all have an expiration date, and none of us know when. Petey’s was last Friday night. I wish I had known this, so I could have told him one more time, “Love ya Bro”. My Road Name is Tabasco. Keep it Real. Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Handgun Self-Defense: Move to Stay Alive by W.H. "Chip" Gross, BuckeyeFirearms.
If you ever become involved in a selfdefense situation, it will likely occur suddenly, unexpectedly, and could turn very violent very quickly. And if you feel threatened to the point that you choose to draw your concealed handgun, remember that it’s now a gunfight, not target shooting. Your goal is to win and survive any way you can. Because reaction is always slower than action, you will be slightly behind the curve. But you can counter that disadvantage through movement. By moving while shooting you are doing something the aggressor did not expect, so now he/she must react to you. In short, movement could save your life.
But to become proficient at this technique, you must incorporate movement into your regular handgun training. Unfortunately, most public ranges don’t allow this type of advanced practice. If you were to try running while shooting, as well as reloading a handgun on the run at a public range, you'd see how quickly you were asked to leave. (NB: Please don't do that.) Which is why I sought out the Move or Die advanced-handgun training course conducted recently by the Buckeye Firearms Association at the EAST Group range in north-central Ohio. Usually available only to police officers and military personnel, EAST Group opens its outdoor ranges half a dozen times per year to the public. Its owner and head instructor ("Sly") is more than qualified to teach such instruction. A retired U. S. Marine Corps "gunny" turned personal protective specialist, you can check out his background by clicking on a previous NRA Family story here. The day began with a half-hour classroom session. "The ultimate goal for the next eight hours is for you to learn to perceive and react to a threat in a timely manner—just 1.5 seconds," Sly began. "In other words, to move off what is called the ‘X’ quickly and aggressively. Because if you don’t move, the ‘X’ is where you are going to die during a gunfight." Sly next explained the Combat Triad. "Think of it as the three points of a triangle: mindset,
gun manipulation and marksmanship," he said. "The proper mindset involves being ready and willing to do whatever you have to do to survive a gunfight. Gun manipulation, also known as ‘running the gun,’ is being so familiar with your handgun that shooting and reloading are automatic; you don’t have to consciously think about what you are doing. And marksmanship is simply hitting what you aim at. Because a threatening situation is not likely to change unless and until you are able to put hits on the target." Once to the range, live firing for the day began with a 40-round assessment drill. The three instructors (a woman, Candy, and another guy, Jeff, in addition to Sly) worked with the 19 students, about a third of whom were women. Students ranged in age from their 20s to a few folks in their 60s or even 70s. Next came the movement drills, which is about learning to react to a situation quickly, then pivot and run laterally, right or left. "Don’t move backwards from a threat, for two reasons," said Sly. "First, moving backwards still keeps you directly in line with the threat. And second, by backpedaling it’s more likely you will catch your heel on something and fall backwards. Then
Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their 40 40

you’re really screwed. Instead, make your first move right or left and seek cover." Sly added that a self-defender should remember to aim at center mass, which translates to the torso of the threat. "As human beings, we are hardwired to look each other in the eye," he said. "But during a gunfight that’s counterproductive because your shots will likely go where you are looking...the head is a much smaller target than the torso, so look and aim there." Following a break for lunch, the afternoon range session was a series of various drills teaching students to anticipate a threat, draw our handguns, and fire several shots while running laterally to cover. "You should be drawing your sidearm as you begin moving," Sly often repeated. "Don’t move and then draw, that’s too late. And if for some reason you can’t get your gun out of the holster, which sometimes happens during high-stress situations, especially if you are wearing a cover garment, don’t stop to do so, keep moving. The same for reloading, if your gun runs dry, reload on the move, don’t stop. Stopping gets you killed." As you may have already surmised, the oneday course was intense training, the instructors attempting to put the students under pressure to simulate the stress of a gunfight as much as possible. Upon returning to the classroom for a final debriefing session, the consensus of the participants was that it had been an excellent day of instruction at an excellent facility, and that they would highly recommend the training to other concealed-carry holders. Sly summed up the training with this last sobering bit of advice. "Continue practicing what you learned by incorporating movement into your handgun training. Learn to quickly assess a potentially dangerous situation, and then if it does hit the fan, move and shoot your way out of it." OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

This month we will tear through the electrical on our XS. A few months ago, I had installed a new battery and the ignition system seemed to work, but due to a questionable electrical system the starter circuit would not work, and the bike was kick only. In addition, the non-functioning starter circuit, the headlight and most of the handlebar switches were iffy, at best. I could have just bought replacement switches, but that is not as interesting. So, I gave them a bath in penetrating oil for a few days, and then I disassembled them. As I dissembled the switches, I took pictures with my phone, and drew pictures on the note pads. This helped immensely when it came time to reassemble the switch housings. Once I disassembled them, I took each piece of copper and gave it a light sand with some 800-grit paper to clean the corrosion off. It appeared the only problem with the switches was excessive corrosion on the contacting surfaces. To prevent this from happening again, I put a light film of dielectric grease on all the contactors. Dielectric grease is a non-conductive lubricant that is available in most auto parts stores. It keeps the moving parts of the contacts from wearing down, while keeping moisture and the elements off the contacting surface. If your switch assemblies are working properly, there will be enough pressure on your contacts to push the grease away from the contacting surface, and electricity will conduct through the contactors. The dielectric grease also works well for spark plug boots by keeping the boot from baking itself to the spark plug, and when you ride in a driving rain, it will keep the plug from shorting out to the engine case due to the rainwater. For replacement insulators I purchased a small Polycarbonate Sheet Stock from Grainger. It is important to purchase actual electrical insulation sheets vs using whatever plastic you have laying around, because many types of plastic conduct static electricity. I spent a little time with THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Taming the Electrical Gremlins
an exacto knife cutting insulators, and then reassembled the switches. I carefully reassembled the contacts on the switch housing, and I reinstalled the switch housings back onto the bike. Not only did the lights work, but they were brighter than they were when this project started. When I checked my headlight voltage, I was getting a strong voltage reading with virtually no voltage drop at the headlight connector. That is impressive for that old of wiring. Speaking of old wiring here is a tip when dealing with old wires: electricity actually runs across the surface of the conductors, so when the surface corrodes, it creates resistance. Over time wires can corrode under the insulation. So even if you clean the wire off at the stripped end, there still could be a notable amount of resistance. The easiest way to check for this is to check for voltage drop. Use a meter to see what the voltage coming into the conductor is and see what the voltage is coming out the other end of the wire. If there is any more than a few tenths of voltage drop on motorcycle wiring, just replace it. Sadly, we will never get this barn find to its full potential because someone stopped by Skidmark and offered a notable sum of money for it. While Brian and I really liked this bike, we have others that are waiting to be returned to the road. So, we sold it and reinvested the money into the garage and the MOTO GO! project. Plus, Brian has a vintage Goldwing he wants to get on the road. MOTO GO! is a mobile shop class that puts tools into the hands of kids, and gets them interested in working on things, and essentially “Brings Back Shop Class”. We hope that working on motorcycles will spark more interest than working on old lawn mowers, and considering women riders THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
are a rapidly growing demographic of bike owners, we hope shop class will no longer just be “for the boys”. Plus when you give kids tools and let them learn by trial and error, they are more likely to grasp concepts when there is a hands on experience, in addition to building deductive reasoning skills versus just memorizing what they were told to out of a book. In October I helped Moto Go at the AIM Expo in Columbus. We had a bench and tools set up with an early ‘70s Honda CB350 on the lift. As kids came by, we handed them tools and asked if they wanted to take something off the bike, and when we would do this, these kids eyes would light up like it was Christmas morning. At one point we had two little girls, around 10ish, excitedly tearing into the motorcycle when one turned to the other and declared “there is nothing to be afraid of!” Then she proceeded to remove a turn signal on her own. The response and interest have been outstanding regardless of gender and age. If you would like to support MotoGo, or learn more, check out their website. https:// motogocleveland.com/ Knoble Moto is a partner of Skidmark Garage. We teach classes for the DIY crowd, on all aspects of motorcycle repair. FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... As a little girl climbed onto Santa's lap, Santa asked the usual, "And what would you like for Christmas?" The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped, "Didn't you get my E-mail?" A blonde driving a car became lost in a snowstorm. She didn't panic however, because she remembered what her dad had once told her. "If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, just wait for a snow plow to come by and follow it." Sure enough, pretty soon a snow plow came by, and she started to follow it. She followed the plow for about forty-five minutes. Finally the driver of the truck got out and asked her what she was doing. And she explained that her dad had told her if she ever got stuck in a snowstorm, to follow a plow. The driver nodded and said, "Well, I'm done with the Wal-Mart parking lot, do you want to follow me over to Best Buy now?”
It was Christmas and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner,"What are you charged with?" "Doing my Christmas shopping early", replied the defendant. "That's no offense", said the judge. "How early were you doing this shopping?" "Before the store opened." Statistics state 95% of all the Harleys ever made are still on the road. The other 5% made it home.

RECIPES
This is one of the most iconic Cajun recipes Ive ever had and it easily adapts to cooking in the crockpot!
Cajun Red Beans and Rice Serves 6-8 (or 3 hungry bikers)
Crockpot Cabbage Rolls Serve 6 (or 3 hungry bikers)
1 pound dried red beans, soaked overnight in water 8 cups chicken broth 2 tbsp olive oil 1 lb Andouille sausage, sliced against the diagonal into rounds (or any smoked sausage) 1 onion, diced 1 green bell pepper, cleaned and diced 1/2 cup diced celery 6 to 8 cloves garlic, minced 2 bay leaves 1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp ground black pepper 2 tsp Creole Seasoning 7 to 8 fresh basil leaves, minced 1 ham hock (or diced ham) Salt and pepper to taste Hot cooked rice
1 large head cabbage 1 - 8oz can tomato sauce ¾ cup quick-cooking rice ½ cup chopped green pepper ½ cup onion ½ cup crushed crackers 1 egg, beaten 1 ounce onion soup mix 1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef 1 – 46oz bottle/can V8 juice Black pepper 1 cup Parmesan cheese Dunk cabbage in boiling water, holding it under, just until leaves begin to fall off the head. Set aside 12 large leaves for rolls; drain well. (Reserve 4 extra leaves then store cabbage in fridge for another use) Cut out the thick vein out of each reserved leaf by making a V-shaped cut, set aside. In a large bowl, combine the tomato sauce, rice, green pepper, onion, cracker crumbs, egg and soup mix. Work raw beef over mixture till thoroughly mixed. Place about ⅓ cup meat mixture on each cabbage leaf, overlap cut ends of leaf. Fold in sides, beginning from the cut end. Roll up completely to enclose filling Secure with toothpicks if desired. Place 2 left over leaves in bottom of a 3 qt crockpot Place cabbage rolls on top of leaves. Pour V8 juice over rolls. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours Just before serving, sprinkle with pepper and parmesan cheese

Garnishes: Fresh basil, chopped green onion, hot sauce Rinse and sort beans and place into a large pot covering with 1-inch of water. Bring beans to a boil over high heat and allow them to cook another 5 minutes, uncovered. Turn off heat and cover beans with lid and let soak for 1 hour. Drain liquid from beans and set aside In a large skillet over medium high heat, pour in enough olive oil to coat bottom of the pan. Add the sausage slices and cook until browned around the edges. Remove the sausage with a slotted spoon and place in the pot with the beans. Keeping the sausage drippings in the skillet, add the onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic and sauté until the vegetables are tender. Add the bay leaves, thyme, pepper, Creole Seasoning, and basil leaves to the skillet sauté together for a few minutes to allow the flavors to marry. Add vegetable mixture and ham hock to the pot of beans and sausage, stirring to combine. Pour in the chicken stock and cook over medium-high heat to bring to bring a boil. Reduce heat to medium low, cover with lid, and let simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until beans are soft and tender. After cooking, I like to take 1 to 2 cups of beans and add to a blender; cover with lid and blend until a smooth puree texture then stir the bean puree back into pot of beans and cook until heated through to help thicken the sauce Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve beans and sausage over plate of hot cooked rice and garnish the top with a little fresh basil, onion or hot sauce.
