FROM THE PUBLISHER For almost a decade, now – this being our 10th year, we have published a powerhouse May Edition which has been amongst the largest motorcycle magazines published anywhere in the country. Some years it’s been over 160 pages – and it’s always been jam packed with hundreds of rides and events for riders to consider as the riding season really kicks off here in Ohio. This year, things are a little different. It’s been a perfect storm of factors driven by COVID-19 – the shutdown order from the Governor, social distancing, the banning of large gatherings, the highest unemployment rates since the Great Depression – and then some, and just an overall sense of fear and uncertainty due to the virus. It’s all combined to cancel events through the Fall – including motorcycle events. As we go to print, Ohio Bike Week has decided to postpone the rally to a date yet to be announced – possibly going to next year. Erie BikeFest and Thunder in the Valley have cancelled – as well as our FreeRide event in Cleveland. These major rallies all require massive investments well in advance of the actual events, and it’s difficult to even suggest taking a chance when there’s so much uncertainty. We remain optimistic though – as we consider how the rest of the year may unfold. Bikers always adapt, it’s what we do. And taking off on the bike seems to be the perfect cure for the doldrums of shut down communities and social distancing. It’s our hope that we will continue to open up and the incidence rate will remain on the decline despite people returning to work as the orders are lifted. And it’s out belief that more and more people will choose to get out on their bikes as we emerge from our caves just in time for summer. Things will change, without a doubt – and possibly not for the worse. People may wash their hands more. No more coughing on others – or even in your own hands. Surfaces will be cleaned more often. And maybe we all appreciate the smaller local riding events that much more. It’s our belief that smaller, local riding events will be more popular than ever as they offer both a chance to get out and ride – and socialize in a comfortable, socially distant manner on our bikes. We absolutely do not want to advocate for throwing caution to the wind and simply take off riding. However, we are starting to plan for when the powers that be choose to decree that our time is done and we can abandon our couches. I do want to take a minute, though, and recognize those that have persevered through everything in what certainly are mostly thankless positions. Certainly, I’m grateful for all the first responders who have served on throughout this. But, we should also recognize those that have worked through all of this in positions that are deemed essential. Who could imagine a time when stocking at a grocery store, working the window at Arby’s, or even working at a local gas station would be considered high risk?

When this is all over – I think we should consider staging, Essential Work Rides throughout the state. We can recognize those that had to work through the “shut down” – in positions that we might not otherwise consider “essential”. If you have ideas on this or would like to help us on it, please shoot me an email! I wish everyone the best – and again – remain positive, we will get through this. As Told By

THE IRON COWBOY When it’s safe to do so – let’s Kick Start things with more Bike Nights and riding events! As we contemplate reopening our economy and possibly salvaging our riding season, we have a few ideas that we believe will help support local businesses and regional events that support both the local economy and countless charitable causes. Thunder Roads Ohio Motorcycle Magazine is working to help facilitate an order allowing Bars, Restaurants, and other Ride Stops to host expanded outdoor beverage service as part of their regular business. This would allow them to more easily and cost effectively host outdoor events such as charity rides and bike nights more safely outside, where there is more space and they can possibly accommodate more guests. •

Permit holders would be allowed to designate an area in which alcoholic beverages would be allowed outside, possibly in the parking lot or other area that allows guests to safely congregate. Restrictions on open container and transporting alcohol would still apply outside the designated area.

For locations not already having a liquor permit and utilizing charitable partners to offer beverage sales outside or as part of special events, we would ask that the state modify their guidelines to allow an expedited application process and lessen the associated fees. Due to the uncertainty of things at this time, the application process and fees associated are limiting event organizers and encouraging them to cancel programing well before they would really have to. •

Currently an F-2 permit allows a nonprofit organization to sell beer, wine, and spirituous liquor onsite as part of a special event. It requires a $150 application fee and must be filed 30 days before the date of the function. Only one may be issued to an organization in any 30 day period. We would propose that the standard application fee be reduced to $20 and the application deadline be reduced to 14 days.

We would propose these changes in an effort to help support local businesses and outdoor special events during these

challenging times. As we reopen and attempt to revive shuttered businesses and dormant communities, special consideration should be given to making it easier for them to conduct business in a safer, more efficient manner. All of these changes would be subject to the Governor’s Order allowing such gatherings and the determination that such behaviors would be relatively safe for those participating. These changes are NOT meant to encourage riding or driving under the influence or even encourage drinking in upon itself. We believe, though, that holding such events outdoors would allow gatherings to be less risky and alcohol sales are a key component to making such efforts financially viable for those hosting. Thunder Roads Ohio and our national digital partner, ReasonsToRide.com will be working to gather signatures and support for the idea in order to KICK START the riding season – once we are given the green light to. This is NOT a campaign to push re-opening, just to help support local businesses and regional events that could benefit from the changes proposed. With your support, we will be working with State legislators and the appropriate State Agencies to help get things done! Please visit ThunderRoadsOhio.com or Thunder Roads Ohio on facebook to register your support for this effort. If you’re a business owner or involved in a ride or special event that could benefit by this, you can also register for additional information and how you can help. You’ll also get updates and more information on how the process works, once decisions are made. Iron Cowboy Productions, LLC 2020 © All Rights Reserved. ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT

Mike Stock COB Abate of Ohio, Inc. 419-654-5446 or 614-319-3644 chairofboard@abate.com

Hi Friends, What will the rest of this year bring? That is the big question that no one can answer. We have had to postpone and cancel everything in April and now we’re waiting on May to see if we can do anything but stay-at-home. Many of us are out riding with no place to go and when we get there, it’s time to turn around and go home. Even with the slow down and limited miles we are making statistics that should be lower than they are. In 2020 we have 246 crashes with 10 fatalities and 61 serious injuries. In 2019 at this same time there were 291 crashes with 14 fatalities and 72 serious injuries. I feel that 2020 should be a lot less with the stay at home policy. The issue of speed is higher this year than last. What’s up with that? We should be enjoying that ride. It’s the single vehicle crashes that need to stop. Let’s stop killing and injuring ourselves. I know many of you are on social media and some are not. The thing that just gets me are the videos of a large group of bikes doing wheelies and riding crazy. Back in the day we had a very bad image in the non-riding community, and we have worked hard at getting this image behind us. We need to stop riding like this, and we need to quit posting and sharing these videos on social media. This just makes a lot of hard work doing charity runs and helping do good work go to hell. Enough said! A lot of issues have been pushed aside but one thing that we need to keep in front of everyone is distracted driving and riding. If you are doing anything other than driving or riding, you are distracted. Using your phone in any way, eating, drinking and even talking (especially arguing) is a distraction. You should see how many tickets are written and how many crash reports show distraction as part of the problem and you would agree it needs to get better. Motorcycle Ohio is planning on starting training classes on the 2nd of May. Please check in with them before showing up. If you are planning on taking a course this summer, get signed up now so when they go back to work you can get in. Contact info for MO is 800-83-RIDER and motorcycle.ohio.gov or if you need help, call me. One of the hardest things I had to do was cancel the Motorcycle Awareness Rally. We will be back next year on the first Saturday in May 2021 and that will be on May the 1st. We need to keep getting the word out to “Look Twice and Save a Life”, “Motorcycles Are Everywhere”. We need to keep educating motorists that we are a part of everyday travel. If anyone needs signs, banners and magnets please call. I will ship you what you need. Everyone please Be Safe until we get this virus under control. Ride Responsible, Be Responsible and Take Responsibility. It is up to all of us. MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Unprecedented? Certainly… Well, here we are, right in the middle of the strangest set of circumstances we have ever seen. All we can do at this time is wait and pray. It’s a bit unsettling isn’t it? It kind of reminds me of a time when the world of so many was turned upside down because of events that shook their world. Let’s go back…It was 1 A.D. Jesus had just been crucified and presented himself to many before His ascension into Heaven. He said, “I must go now, but I will send a Comforter to remain with you, who will guide you and teach you, lead you through and with Him in you, you will do greater things than I have done while here on the earth.” So, He sent the Holy Spirit to remain with us until He returns. The disciples weren’t sure what to think of this, so after Jesus went to Heaven, they gathered together in one room to pray and find out what was next. And then it happened! The Holy Spirit fell on them like a fire and they spoke in heavenly languages, went out and preached to all different kinds of people they had never spoken to before and they did it in their language! Those that were hearing could understand everything that was being preached and they were in awe! Revival broke out in the land! So did the havoc! The disciples began to get arrested, and shut up in their homes, prevented from having gatherings and services. It wasn’t a pandemic…it was a fear of an uprising that caused the Romans to flip out and try to stifle the truth! However, truth can never be stifled. It will always prevail, just as Jesus has for over 2000 years.

Rex and I are praying for all of you, no, we have not ever met most of you, doesn’t mean we can’t pray for you. Not only does your general well-being matter to us, your spiritual well-being matters to us as well. There is peace in the message we send, there is hope in the Savior we serve and there is love in our hearts for you. Be blessed, be at rest and be assured that God is in the center of all and His hand will prevail!

Peace…. Mary G.

Listen, is our world shaken? A little bit. Are we headed into a ‘new normal’? Probably. But let me ask you this one question…. what have you done during this time, during this pause in your everyday life that could make a difference in the future? Have you mellowed out and learned to be calm? Or have you panicked at every turn wondering what is next? Have you learned what our ancestors learned during the Depression about staying prepared and stocked up ‘just in case’? Have you learned to make do with what you have and been a little more sparing on the toilet paper? Whatever your situation, whatever the future holds, the true answer to it all is Jesus. Do you think it a coincidence that this is the time of year for all of this to break loose? Of course not, the enemy had a plan to quiet the Believer and disrupt the flow of things by getting everyone over into fear and panic. However, this Believer, along with many others, have been quite busy with prayer, online church, studying more and speaking out more on social media so that all will know Who is really on the Throne! You see, what the enemy meant for evil, God will turn for good. All you need to do is trust in the One Who can see you through… and believe me…it is not the government. Our Leaders are doing all they can to keep it all together, yes indeed! However, please notice how reliant they are on our Creator for wisdom and understanding. Not talking all of them, but most of the ones in the forefront. There are a few that appear to be throwing a cog in the wheel, it’s okay…they won’t get far. Remember…Truth prevails in every situation. 10 10

Coronavirus: Q&A related to veterans

VETERANS AFFAIRS What support is included for VA health care facilities and their COVID-19 response? The CARES Act includes $19.57 billion in funding to ensure the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has the equipment, tests, telehealth capabilities and support services necessary to support veterans and the health care workforce at facilities nationwide. I am a veteran living in a rural area and am being told that my appointments will now be through telehealth, but I can’t afford internet services or don’t have a good internet connection. How will this bill help me? Talk to your provider and local VA about getting an iPad or other tablet from VA. This bill allows VA to enter into partnerships with local telecommunications companies to subsidize or completely pay for broadband internet services. Call your local VA facility or send a secure message to your provider on My HealtheVet to ask about this option. I run a State Veterans Home. Will I be penalized if my residents come down with COVID-19 and are transferred to acute care, putting me under the 90% occupancy rate threshold needed for payment from VA? No. Under Section 20005 of the CARES Act, State Veterans Homes will continue to receive payment from VA during the COVID-19 pandemic, even if they don’t meet the 90% occupancy rate or the 75% veteran occupancy rate requirements for per diem payment. I run a State Veterans Home and I don’t have enough PPE or supplies. What support can VA provide? In addition to requesting emergency supplies and PPE from your county or state emergency coordinator, Section 20005 of the CARES Act also allows VA to share PPE and supplies with State Veterans Homes to keep residents and staff safe. I’m a veteran in need of home-based care. Can I still enroll or renew my participation in the Veteran Directed Care program? Yes. Under Section 20006 of the CARES Act, you can enroll or renew your participation in the Veteran Directed Care program through telephone or telehealth, no in-home visit required. I run an area agency on aging or other agency that provides services to veterans in the Veteran Directed Care program. Our county is telling us to limit face-to-face services and home visits. Can I still process new participants and renewals? 12

Yes. Under Section 20006 of the CARES Act, agencies can now enroll or renew veterans in the Veteran Directed Care program through telephone or telehealth, no in-home visit required. I’m a veteran using the Veteran Directed Care program for home-based care, but I can’t get to a printer or post office to send in my renewal paperwork due to COVID-19. Will I be kicked out of the program? No. Under Section 20006 of the CARES Act, veterans and their caregivers will not be penalized for late paperwork and will not be dis-enrolled or suspended from the program. I’m a veteran using the Veteran Directed Care program for home-based care, but I am currently living outside of my home state and can’t travel home due to COVID-19 restrictions and health concerns. Can my caregiver still be paid for services, even if we are out of state? Yes. Under Section 20006 of the CARES Act, veterans and their caregivers will not be penalized for being out of state for more than 14 days during the COVID-19 emergency, and should continue to receive payments for care. I use VA’s prosthetics service and need to get my prosthetic adjusted, but am nervous to go into a VA facility because I have underlying conditions that make me more at risk of complications from COVID-19. Where can I go to get my prosthetic adjusted? This bill gives VA more flexibility to allow veterans who need their prosthetics created or adjusted to do so in their local community. Call your local VA provider or message them on MyHealtheVet and ask about this option. I’m a VA employee working lots of overtime due to COVID-19. Can I still receive overtime pay for hours worked, even if it puts me above the Federal pay caps? Yes. Under Section 20008 of the CARES Act, any VA employee involved in COVID-19 response efforts can receive pay for all hours worked, even above the normal pay caps, for work done in support of VA’s response to COVID-19. I’m a home health care worker for the VA, can I receive PPE for providing home care services to veterans? Yes. Under Section 20009 of the CARES Act, VA must provide PPE to any home health worker employed by or contracted with VA to provide services to veterans. I’m a veteran receiving pension and health care benefits from VA. Will the emergency income from the CARES Act (the Recovery Rebate) count towards my income for determining my eligibility for pension, health care, and other needs-based benefits? No. Under Section 20010 of the CARES Act, the 2020 Recovery Rebate payment cannot be counted as income when determining a veteran’s eligibility for any VA needs-based benefits. I am a VA HUD-VASH caseworker, how can I make sure I am keeping up with my veterans in the HUD-VASH program?

This bill encourages VA to use more telehealth capabilities for yourself and your veterans. Call each other or use Apple FaceTime, Facebook Messenger Video Chat, Google Hangouts Video, or Skype. Ask your local VA about access to an iPad or other tablet for you or your veterans to use to facilitate virtual meetings. I am a Grant and Per Diem provider. Will I be able to keep my veterans enrolled after they are absent for 14 days? Yes. This bill waives VA’s requirement to automatically dis-enroll veterans using the GPD program if they are absent more than 14 days. Will I continue to get paid for veterans who are absent from my program for more than 3 days? This bill gives VA the authority to pay GPD providers for a veteran even if they are absent from the program for more than 3 days. Contact your local VA about this option. Will I get paid the same amount as before? This bill waives the current limit on the amount VA can pay GPD providers during the COVID-19 emergency. Contact your local VA about this option. This bill includes additional funding for VA to increase payments to many service providers, including the GPD program. I am an SSVF provider. How does this bill allow me to continue to help homeless veterans? This bill includes additional funding for VA to increase payments to many service providers, including the SSVF program. For more information about how to help veterans during COVID-19, visit https://www.va.gov/homeless/ssvf/. I run a veteran-owned small business. Can the CARES Act help me? Yes. If you are a veteran-owned small business, you can receive support through the Small Business Paycheck Protection Program to cover 8-weeks of your payroll, the mortgage interest, rent, and utility costs. There will be up to 100% loan forgiveness options for a veteran-owned small businesses that protects/fully maintains their workers. I have a VA-backed mortgage, am I protected against foreclosure during the COVID-19 emergency declaration? Yes, under CARES Act Section 4022, federally backed mortgages, including those guaranteed orinsured by the VA are protected from foreclosure for 60 days beginning on March 18, 2020. If borrowers are facing financial hardship, they can by requesting a forbearance for up to 6 months, with a possible extension for another 6 months, through their mortgage holder. STUDENT VETERANS My school is converting to online education because of COVID-19, will I still receive my housing allowance? Yes, with the passage of Senate Bill 3503 into law, VA will continue to make housing allowance payments to students using VA education benefits at the on campus rate, if the school converted to online education due to COVID-19. Ride Guides and Calendars Support Local Veterans Thunder Roads Ohio and ReasonsToRide.com have teamed with Combat Vets Motorcycle Association, Units 12-1 and 12-7, to produce regional motorcycle event calendars with a focus on Veterans events and Veteran service organizations. These pocket guides include a comprehensive listing of both motorcycle and veteran oriented events being held from April through the end of the year. Proceeds from the Calendars go to support local veterans programs and are coordinated by the CVMA.

The Ride Guides and Calendars will include profiles on Veterans Organizations across Ohio! If you are involved in a Veterans organization – motorcycle or not – we’d encourage you to list any events that you might be hosting in the calendar. You’re also able to include a Directory Listing for your organization along with contact information. This is a GREAT way to get the word out and possibly connect with both Veterans and those interested in helping you with your mission.

OVER 10,000 of the Calendars will be distributed within each region – and they will be emailed out to over 200,000 Riders across Ohio! Veterans and grass roots non-profit organizations are able to list their events in the calendars for only $10-20 in most cases! The goal is to make these guides an extremely cost effective means of getting information out for the various charitable organizations out there – and this is only accomplished with the support of local business sponsors. We do charge slightly more for commercial event listings, and we welcome businesses and larger organizations to sponsor ad pages or possibly the calendar themselves. We believe that these are still very cost effective for the commercial organizations looking to reach both riders and Veterans – and we encourage you to help pass on the word to any companies or potential sponsors that you might know. For more information, please email Events@ThunderRoadsOhio.com Support the COMBAT VETS MA and Local Veteran’s Programs through Regional Motorcycle Events Calendars.

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road.

MAY UPDATE!

ATTENTION MOTORCYCLE SHOPS / CUSTOM BUILDERS / PAINTERS: For shops interested in participating and possibly exhibiting customer and shop bikes, a limited number of shop displays are available at Thunder Roads Bike Shows. Participating shops and organizations are able to offer special incentives for their customers and members. For more information or to reserve space for group bike displays (i.e. shops, clubs, race teams, etc..) email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

UPCOMING SHOWS! Due to the Shutdown Order currently in place as we go to press, we ask that everyone visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio for information on upcoming Bike Shows.

Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes. Interested in coming out? It’s easy! Just visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and you can register for whichever show you’d like. By Pre-Registering, you are locking in your spot, saving a few dollars, and you’ll even get a FREE T-Shirt! Then come on out to the show! Specifics vary by show, but it’s generally an informal process. You’ll meet other builders and exhibitors – and most likely walk away with more than a few new friends in the motorcycle community. NEW for 2020 – NEW Vintage Classes! For 2020, we will be adding VINTAGE RACING and VINTAGE TOURING classes as options for exhibitors taking part in the BIKE SHOW SERIES. As always, we will require at least 3 bikes in these classes to qualify for a BEST IN CLASS AWARD – but several of the 2019 shows already far exceeded this for these classes, with some amazing bikes. Our hope is that we can encourage more Exhibitors to bring out and show their bikes in these classes with us offering new, distinct classes.

BaseCamp Video Tutorials, Access MC

“Should I buy heated grips or heated

April 20, 2020- Since last month, I had to shut down my riding due to surgery as well as avoiding virus infection. Still under lockdown until at least mid-May. (Am in a high risk group) Like many of you, I've been stuck at home, so have been working on those projects you "always wanted to do but never got around to."

Garmin BaseCamp Routing Software Video Tutorials Most of you know I am event coordinator for MSTA FlyBy Week in Marietta, Ohio, August 24-30, 2020. (go to flybyweek.com for details) One of my jobs is to create the GPS and paper routes for the event. This year there will be at least 25 routes to choose from including four adventure routes.

There are five BaseCamp videos, that include how to set up BaseCamp, how to create routes for both conventional GPS units and the newer Garmin zumo models that use the "Trip Planner" app, and how to export the finished routes to GPX files that can be easily shared and distributed. Three additional GPS videos demonstrate how to set your GPS to work with the routes, how to import and use Trip Planner routes on GPS models that use the application, and a comparison of how Trip Planner and standard routes work on the GPS.

Over the winter I learned a lot about BaseCamp from other experts and some experimentation. I was able to add features and reliability to MSTA GPS routes and create a "best routing practices" workflow for the club's routes for 2020. It's almost impossible to share these techniques in written articles, so I made some video tutorials and posted them on a YouTube channel to be shared with my friends, both within and outside MSTA.

To view them just sign on to YouTube and do a search for MSTA GPS. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqjRAEY_D4pZpARc4vg-_OQ) 16 16

Ohio Motorcycling in the 1990s- Access MC In 1990, there was very little motorcycle programming on TV. I had learned about public access channels on local cable systems and found they were eager for original programming- an opportunity to get motorcycling on TV. I've had a life long interest in documentary film production, teaching basic production courses at Wright State University in the 1970s. Through the 1980s I waited for affordable video technology that would enable me to shoot and edit in a film style- a camera that only weighed a few pounds with good enough quality that it could be edited and copied. Hi-8 video cameras arrived in 1989, along with Super VHS VCRs that could do clean video edits. I could shoot lots of shots and edit them into an action-packed video that had good enough quality that decent copies could be made. Existing public access programming at that time was boringmostly talking heads in a studio. Viewership was low, but I had a plan. Back then, there were only about 50 cable channels and most viewers would flip through them whenever there was a commercial break, stopping to look at anything that caught their eye. The odds were good I could catch channel flippers with the right content, so I created a half hour monthly series on motorcycle sport with quicker editing, lots of action and live sound. Each episode would concentrate on a single motorcycle event, mostly amateur events in southern Ohio. The first episode aired in February 1990 and featured a motocross race at Dayton Motorcycle Club. It had a brief intro and close with

me on camera, but the rest was live action and natural sound with no narration. The public access people were blown away, and the show won numerous local and regional awards.

income from the event videos and some of the sponsorship money went to purchase professional equipment, including a professional camcorder and broadcast quality edit suite.

On public access shows you cannot have commercials, but you can have announcements at the beginning and end where you announce, “This program was produced with assistance from...” and you can name your supporters and sponsors, showing a matching title on screen. (Kind of what PBS does) Access MC gained a considerable following and received financial support from dealers and motorcycle clubs whose events I covered. Other public access facilities and cable systems were happy to carry Access MC- two cable systems in Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati and Athens, Ohio, as well as Cadillac, Michigan. Dave Despain even did a segment about Access MC on his Motoworld TV show in 1993. (It's on the Access MC YouTube channel below) During this time I was creating event videos and selling the edited tapes to participants. I did the annual Peace Pipe Enduro at Treaty City Motorcycle Club in Greenville, OH, an ISDE qualifier at Wellston, OH, Baby Burr national Dual-sport, Lima OH Pro National flat track race, the last 24 Hours of Nelson road race for WERA, and the Devils Staircase pro hill climb at Oregonia, OH. Some of these events sold hundreds of copies, and I made shortened versions into Access MC episodes. The show covered Pro half mile, hillclimb and motocross. There were all kinds of amateur events, including motocross, hare scrambles, poker runs, observed trials, enduros, dual-sports, road race, Rider magazine road rallies, touring and trail riding. I did monthly shows through the end of 1993, producing forty unique episodes. All of them have been uploaded to a YouTube channel. Just go to YouTube and search for Access MC and it will come right up! (The full-length event videos are there as well.) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQyBtiGHFmxsv_JfMbg_5Hg

Using the new equipment in 1995, I produced a compilation video using clips from several years of crashes and fun stuff from the Treaty City Peace Pipe enduro. I got a local garage band to do an instrumental rock music score and placed short live sound sequences between the music video segments featuring rider laments and mischief from event workers and spectators. Distribution rights were sold to a national distributor, and Mud Sweat and Gears sold many thousands of copies. In 1996, I left my computer tech support job to do video production full time as Kern Video Productions, retiring a couple of years ago. We did lots of TV commercials and industrial training videos, but the motorcycle stuff in the early 90s was the most fun. Be sure to visit Access MC on YouTube

If you're a race fan, here are familiar names of riders interviewed in the series: MSTA breakfasts and events are still on hold- hope to have more positive information next month.

Pro Half-Mile: Steve Morehead, Geo Roeder, Scott Parker, Ricky Grahan, Chris Carr Motocross: Guy Cooper, Jeff Ward, Mike Kiedrowski Hillclimb: Earl Bowlby, John Williams family, Tim Frazier, Tom Reizer, Ted Wilkins Off-Road: Mark Hyde, Jeff Russell, Dick Burleson, Bill Kaeppner, Art Pickelheimer Personalities: Larry Maier, KK Motorcycle Supply's JR Kelley and Tim Wourms, Steve Kirk, David McCarthy (Lima national promoter)

Women and Wheels…

May is typically open season for motorcycle enthusiasts. By now, we’ve had plans to meet for our annual “Blessing of the Bikes” along with other choice events. We may have taken in a few “off season” rides for a much needed break from our in-house orders to practice social distancing. But at the end of the day, our plans have been interrupted. I had plans to fly to Arizona to ride for a week in April. I, too, waited till the day before my departure to cancel my flight. So many great events have had to be rescheduled or postponed. As I was writing this article, I saw the update that Ohio Bike Week has been postponed. I’m not surprised, but disappointed. As time goes on, there will continue to be many changes and adjustments. Current statistics show that 1 in 5 motorcycle riders are females. Verbal interviews with women say they feel energized, sexy and happy when they ride. Often empty nesters describe this new passion as having a new lease on life, a renewed sense of community and taking on unexplored challenges. I subtitled this month’s article, Women and Wheels. Typically, the first Saturday in May has been known as International Female Ride Day. It began 14 years ago as a movement for female riders and is now recognized in over 120 countries. Needless to say, it too, has been rescheduled to Saturday, August 22. For more information on the International Female Ride Day, visit www.motoress.com

Honoring a female living legend… In honor of International Female Ride Day, I was doing some research about women who ride. One name kept showing up and that name was Gloria Tramontin Struck, who at the age of 94, has made her claim to fame on two wheels. I was intrigued with her story so much, that I reached out to her in hopes to have a phone interview. Ironically, I received a call from her as I was working on this article.

If I was to guess her age by the way she talked and sounded on the phone, I would guess her to be a vibrant young lady in her early 50’s. Her mind is sharp and keen. In talking with Struck, she has paved the way for thousands of women to follow in her path. She is going on 74 years as the longest active member of Motor Maids. Among her early 20

days being born and raised in Clifton, New Jersey, she worked in a war plant during WWII for 12 years, helped in her husband’s business in sales and still managed to sell Avon products for 44 years. Her first ride on a motorcycle was at the age of 10. In 1941, she bought her first Indian Scout. As Paul Harvey would say, “now you know the rest of the story”. Struck has been inducted into the Sturgis Hall of Fame in 2011, followed by induction in 2016 to the A.M.A. Hall of Fame and most recently received the 2019 Sturgis lifetime achievement award. She has ridden in 48 states and parts of Europe at the age of 74 and 76 years young respectfully. Struck has written a book called “A lifetime Motorcyclist”. She makes appearances around the country for book signings. “I would be glad to personally autograph my book to your readers.” quotes Struck. Although you can find her book on Amazon, they are not autographed. You can order your personally autographed book from Struck’s Facebook page, Gloria Tramontin Struck. Tell her you read about her in May’s issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. Her advice to future female riders is, “Take the course, wear a helmet no matter what and live your dream”. As of today, Struck has 2 bikes and currently rides a Heritage Softail Classic. 1. Name and age ~ Lori McClintock, age 56 2. Occupation ~ Semi truck driver, I haul steel 3. BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Coronavirus Concealed Carry: Why You Should Change Up Your Tactics

UNPRECEDENTED TIMES CALLED FOR NEW MEASURES, INCLUDING CHANGING UP OUR MINDSET WHILE PRACTICING CONCEALED CARRY DURING THE CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN.

By Dr. Martin Topper, PersonalDefenseWorld. com Those who have concealed carry weapons and carry on a daily basis often develop methods to handle unwanted contacts. They make plans for how to protect themselves should one of those contacts turn out to be an attempted robbery or worse. However, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic lockdown changes how, when and where people come in contact with each other. So practicing concealed carry during the coronavirus lockdown brings unique challenges.

Concealed Carry During Coronavirus Lockdown

Why change up your concealed carry practices during coronavirus? We’ll get there. Shortages of important items like sanitizers, paper goods and other grocery items make it more likely that people will come into conflict over these goods or over the money to buy them, especially if the supply chain is further compromised. Additionally, the early release of incarcerated individuals in some jurisdictions puts more criminals back on the street. This comes as some law enforcement departments experience higher than normal rates of absenteeism due to illness. Therefore, people need to start rethinking their risk profiles and how they will use their concealed carry gear in light of these changes in their environment.

Environmental Changes

Crime is initially down because fewer people are on the street right now, especially after dark. On the other hand, several criminologists express concern that if economic conditions worsen and high unemployment continues, there may be an increase in both strong-arm 26 26

and armed robbery near food stores and banks. Robbery attempts may also increase in and around homes where people keep cash and supplies. Prior to the pandemic, most robberies occurred between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. They took place on the street or in and around homes. Robberies in residential areas will likely still take place during darkness. However, a considerable number of robberies on the street may shift to daylight hours. Many of the remaining open businesses have reduced their hours and now close earlier. Also, it’s plausible that those who commit robberies could be infected with COVID-19. Criminals could potentially have multiple close-range contacts with victims and other criminals like fences and black marketeers. Both of these environmental changes will require law abiding citizens who carry concealed to modify the way they use carry gear.

Same Old Gear, Updated Tactics

The most important tactical update involves modifying our mindsets. Most people who carry regularly know to avoid places where crimes often occur, especially in hours of darkness. They also practice situational awareness by staying in “Condition Yellow” when away from home. Being in Condition Yellow involves dressing to blend with the crowd; standing up straight; looking around in a frequent but casual manner; walking deliberately at a moderate speed; refraining from walking near places where robbers might hide; and being civil, but not overly friendly toward strangers. But given that the COVID-19 virus is so easily transmitted, it’s important to increase situational awareness to “Condition Orange.” This requires expanding the “personal space bubble” around us from the usual two or three feet to at least six feet. Keep a heightened awareness of others in our vicinity. Finally, be extra careful to avoid enclosed areas where people come into close contact. The ease with which this virus spreads also influences how people use their carry gear. Many people who have had defensive training usually carry a variety of gear like a LED light of at least 600 lumens, some pepper spray, a whistle, a locking folding knife, a smart phone and a handgun with two reloads. This gives

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

them a good deal of flexibility in responding to unwanted contacts, based on a reasonable assessment of the contact’s behavior toward them. However, the need to maintain a larger personal space bubble means that those who carry will now have to begin thinking sooner about how to respond when strangers initiate unwanted contacts.

Distance Is Your Friend

In a way, this is an advantage because it affords greater time to make a decision, but the COVID-19 lockdown also requires that we use carry gear differently. For example, during lockdown there are fewer people on the street or in the store; this makes using a whistle less effective because there may not be anyone to hear it. The pandemic also vastly reduces the usefulness of a knife and hand-to-hand techniques, because using close-range skills places a defender at extreme risk of exposure to the virus. Additionally, the phone can be a deterrent, but only if the contact fears the consequences of his or her actions and the police are quite near, which is not likely under current conditions. Therefore, the 600 lumen light, the pepper spray and the handgun are the more effective carry gear in a pandemic. When it’s dark, a powerful light can stun an assailant long enough to allow your escape. But lights aren’t very effective during the day. Pepper spray is effective at keeping people at least six feet away. So it’s a good choice if a person is aware of conditions and keeps the wind at their back. Also, the unwanted contact needs to not appear to be armed. When used skillfully, handguns are very reliable under a broad set of circumstances for deterring and responding to violent assaults. Outfit your carry gun with lights, lasers or night sights. But it’s not legal to brandish a firearm without a clear indication that you are being threatened with deadly force. Few unwanted contacts behave in ways that justify being shot, even in a “Stand Your Ground” jurisdiction.

Mind Over Mugger

In the end, all of this brings us back to mindset. Concealed carry during the coronavirus lockdown presents unusual challenges. But then again, life is full of such challenges, and our minds are incredibly efficient tools for adapting. Analyze how COVID-19 has changed your daily life. Understand the potential threats you might face and pre-plan responses. Stay alert, be mobile, look ordinary, and display a civil attitude. If that does not work, then choose the most appropriate response with the gear you have at hand. Reprinted from PersonalDefenseWorld.com OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

Cometic Primary Gasket Review. From when I first became interested in motorcycles, everyone told me Harleys leaked oil. As I advanced as a mechanic I have learned that is not true, with modern gaskets anyways. I have an 05 FXD I use as a daily rider and traveler. Recently I was telling a Cometic rep about how my primary gasket kept leaking. He told me they have a new line of primary gaskets that will seal a gap up .060”. He said this was done by “Cometic's proprietary AFM (Aluminum Foamette Material) gaskets feature an aluminum core with a chemically blown, compounded nitrile synthetic rubber bonded to the outside.” I was intrigued. Cometic has always been a friend to the grass roots guys, and they proved this again by sending me one to try and give it a review. The gasket came well packed and in a solid box, so that wouldn't likely get damaged in shipping. The kit came with good instructions, a primary gasket, shifter plate gasket, new o-rings for the shifter tube, and all the o-rings for the inner primary. It also included the metal tabs that lock in the inner primary bolts in place. The primary gasket has a metal backing plates, and small cellulose foam material that is on either side of the gasket. This foam is what seals against the mating surfaces. The instructions were straight forward with good info. It would be nice it the included the torque pattern in the instructions though. The average mechanic can complete this repair in their garage with basic hand tools and a torque wrench. You will need an allen socket or torx socket to torque the bolts to spec. You can get these at most auto parts stores. *Buy the better torx socket, because the cheap ones twist easily. First I drained the primary oil into a catch pan, then since I run mid controls, I removed the shifter and the left foot peg mount. Before I removed any cover bolts, I took the gasket box and I did a poorly drawn picture of the primary cover, then poked holes through it at the bolt location. This allowed me to place the bolts in the same location hole as I removed them. There are an assortment of different length bolts so it is important to keep them in order. Next I removed the shifter plate. From there I went around the cover and loosened each bolt slightly, before I fully removed them. This keeps the cover from cocking and jamming a bolt in before I was able to remove it. I then removed all the cover bolts and the outer cover itself. Once it was removed I inspected the inside of the cover for damage or debris, and I also inspected the primary chain for wear and free play. There should be .5 to .75” free play in the

primary chain, and I was on the high end of this measurement, so I did have to move the adjuster up one notch. At 52,000 miles I figure that is not that bad. I then cleaned the gasket surface with a razor blade then some solvent. Next I replaced all the o-rings on the shifter tube, cleaned and lubed the shifter shaft, and installed it into the inner primary. Afterwards I installed the Cometic Primary gasket on the alignment studs, and then I put the primary cover onto the studs and I started the bolts in by a few threads. By only using a few threads at first, this allowed me to keep a small gap in between the primary and cover so I could see that each bolt went through the gasket hole and didn't bind up the gasket. I subsequently ran each bolt into to finger tight, then checked again for alignment and binding. Bolts are to be torques to 84-108 in-lbs according to the Mo-Co . This is one of the times that torque pattern and specs are extremely important. The shifter plate I torqued afterwards because it is easy to miss torque this plate, and cock it sideways, leading to a faint leak. From there I reinstalled the shifter, and the foot peg mount. Next I refilled the oil, and then reinstalled the derby cover. I run 75w-140 with friction modifier for primary oil. You can fight amongst yourselves as to the appropriate weight for primary oil. After a 100 mile test ride there was a very faint amount of oil that had wheeped out of the main gasket. So I re-torqued everything and cleaned up the oil. After 500 more miles, nothing has leaked out. I am very happy with the Cometic product and I would recommend it. 5 Stars! Plus they are located in the greater Cleveland area, so it is always great to keep my money local. Check them out at www.cometic.com The Part Number for this kit was: C9885. FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

A photographer for a national magazine was assigned to get photos of a great forest fire. Smoke at the scene was too thick to get any good shots, so he frantically called his home office to hire a plane. "It will be waiting for you at the airport!" he was assured by his editor. As soon as he got to the small, rural airport, sure enough, a plane was warming up near the runway. He jumped in with his equipment and yelled, "Let's go! Let's go!" The pilot swung the plane into the wind and soon they were in the air. "Fly over the north side of the fire," said the photographer, "and make three or four low level passes." "Why?" asked the pilot. "Because I'm going to take pictures! I'm a photographer, and photographers take pictures!" said the photographer with great exasperation. After a long pause the pilot said, "You mean you're not the instructor?"

Biker rolling through town on his custom, fastest bike in town. He's going around a bend when he rolls up on a cop. The blue lights come on and out rolls the cop. The biker thinks, "He'll never catch me in that car" and takes off. Several miles later the cop is still behind him as he pulls over. The cop walks up to the biker and asks for his license. Then the cop says, "OK. I've had a crappy day, and I'm ready to head home. Come up with a good excuse for speeding away from me and I'll let you go." The biker looks at the cop and replies, "The old lady left me last week for a cop. I was afraid it was you and you were trying to bring her back."

It takes more love to share the saddle than it does to share the bed. The only good view of a thunderstorm is in your rearview mirror. Only Bikers understand why dogs love to stick their heads out car windows.

RECIPES

Here is one of the original recipes that made this site so popular! I love chicken wings!! I prefer them baked (less fat) and super flavorful. Here is how I bake them to keep them crispy. (People have stolen it and posted it as their own but TRUST ME this one is pure BCK!)

The Perfect Baked /Grilled Chicken Wings 2 lbs chicken wings, cut into 2 pieces with tips removed Preheat oven to 450 degrees Bring a large pot of half water half chicken broth to boiling. Boil the wings 8-10 minutes and remove to drain on a wire rack. (helps reduce some of the fat allowing for quicker crisping in the oven) Season the wings with your favorite DRY seasoning, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, etc. Bake wings on a sheet pan coated with cooking spray, for 30 minutes, then turn wings over and cook the other side for another 10 minutes or you can toss them on the grill till they are crispy. Remove to a large bowl and toss in your favorite sauce. Serve while hot

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail. com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!
