THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

FROM THE PUBLISHER On August 27th, Jessi Combs died in a crash of a jet-powered high-speed car while attempting to beat her own four-wheel land speed record. Born into the Black Hills of Rapid City, South Dakota – Jessi lived an unbelievable life that could truly be described as “FULL THROTTLE” or as the Peterson Automotive Museums exhibit on her is titled “Life at Full Speed”. She lived life to the fullest – as a bike builder and fabricator, a racer, and true powersports enthusiast – and she did so on a huge stage, starring in multiple television shows and a featured guest on countless more. I had the chance to meet Jessi during the Legends Ride at Sturgis a few years back. Truly a beautiful person throughout, she just radiated energy and her passion for life. As just about everyone that has met her has done, I couldn’t help but walk away at the end of the day thinking – “wow – how cool is she?!” Her death was such a surprise, because it was hard to imagine any challenge that she couldn’t conquer. The record that she was attempting to break was her own – 483mph! Amazing. And it got me thinking about all the people that really make our world a more interesting and amazing place. In particular, it’s worth considering all the people that make our motorcycle community such a constant celebration of life. There are many celebrities and unique folks that often take the stage and are recognized at rallies and events throughout the country. Folks like Kevin Bean’re – “The Mayor of Fun” – or the somewhat infamous Rhett Rotten – who is now touring events with his vintage Wall of Death! I recently hung with him for a short time at the Easyrider Rodeo in Chillicothe – and it was great seeing how people were energized by his enthusiasm and passion. He jumped on those old bikes and rode around the walls whooping and hollering – and having a great time! Again – how cool is that?! And it’s certainly not just the national celebrities that make our community so cool. In fact – it’s the driven individuals in our local communities that really make the most impact and define the motorcycle community for so many. This month we feature our most recent TANK AWARD recipient – Jack Morgan from Zanesville. He’s a builder and craftsman that’s been through a lot but still has the energy to help drive the local motorcycle community through the Down Bikers Fund, Inc and local motorcycle events that he supports. Over the past year, I’ve had the chance to meet and get to know Amy Hunting from the Rubber City HOG Chapter and a driving force behind this year’s Bikers for Boobs event in Akron. They raised over $55,000 for their designated charities and helped recognize and show support for hundreds of families impacted by cancer. How cool is that?! As driven and amazing as these individuals are, I really think the important question is how can we make a difference and contribute to the community ourselves? For a moment I considered comparisons between Jessi Combs and Tony Stark – Iron Man from the Avengers. Jessi undoubtedly had the over the top, crazy love for life and desire to see what she could do next drive that is portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in the movies. But she was a real person and didn’t have the limitless wealth and resources of Iron Man – imagine if she had?! How cool would that have been? Jessi though, was a real person. She just had an amazing perspective and mission for her life. “To reveal to this world what they are capable of, by showing them the confidence and abilities they already possess.” – Jessi Combs (How cool is that?!) We don’t have to be on TV or travel across the country to make a difference. We don’t even have to host events or beat the drum in our own communities to make a difference like Jack and Amy. You can make a difference just by going out of your way to make someone’s life better. That could be by riding to support a worthy cause or volunteering to support a local organization. Or maybe just giving that extra effort to the causes or events we already support. Just imagine what we could accomplish if we all took that attitude – kicking it up a notch and living life full throttle! And thanks to those that already are – making our world such a cooler place!

Now Hosting – Ride Registrations! Thunder Roads Ohio has teamed up with ReasonsToRide.com to introduce a new option for Ride and Event Organizers – an online ride/event registration option that’s easy to set up and won’t cost a fortune (if anything!) There are countless advantages to offering riders the chance to register in advance for a ride or event. Just a few include being able to more accurately plan for how many riders you have, identifying who’s taking part for additional information, and encouraging riders to commit. You can also incentivize people for their early registration and commitment to the ride by offering a discount on registration fees. While this might seem as though it costs the event – it clearly helps push the needle and drive participation by getting people to invest. Riders are more likely to go ahead and jump on their bike on a possibly chilly morning, regardless of clouds in the sky or a headache from the night before – if they have already paid for their participation. Or you might offer free t-shirts for those registering in advance – instead of a discount. There are countless options, but undoubtedly preregistration is the way to go. The challenge for many is that accepting pre-registrations can turn into a huge task in advance and not everyone has the resources or knowledge to set up a website to process them online. ReasonsToRide.com (RTR) is a national website that hosts event listings, blogs, and other resources for riders. They’ve partnered with regional publications such as Thunder Roads Ohio and grass roots event organizers to promote local events on an

8

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

unprecedented level. Their goal is to become the nation’s best online resource for riders. And they hope to achieve this by connecting with riders – one ride at a time! Imagine having one website where you can go and browse various events and then register for rides with just a few clicks. Ride organizers then know you’re coming and can plan for you. They don’t have to process any paperwork; they can see the signups growing and then collect a check for them all! Both Thunder Roads Ohio and RTR will be working to help promote the ride specifically, but thousands of riders coming to read the magazine online, check out the Blogs, or possibly shop for a motorcycle will see the ride and can sign-up as well! How cool is that?! Thunder Roads Ohio is working with RTR to offer this option to organizers with rides in 2020 and has allocated a number of sponsorship packages for those able to sign up before January 30, 2020. These packages include advertising support, print material, and of course online hosting through RTR and Thunder Roads Ohio! For more information, email us at Events. ThunderRoads@gmail.com

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Smells and Bluebelles…. Have you ever got a whiff of something and thought, “Pew! What is that smell??” Or on the other hand, breathed in the wonderful smells of the morning air, freshly mowed grass, burning leaves or better yet… new leather! All of these have a distinctive odor and can take you back to places in your mind that trigger either good or bad memories in your life. My personal favorite is the smell of the fields as you roll through the night time air on a country road; sure it’s a little buggy, but there’s nothing like the soft roar of your bike rolling down a country road with nothing else around but you, the breeze and for me, the soft presence of the Lord. It’s comforting to know that no matter where I am in life, I have a comforter Who is always with me. How do I know that? Because He promised He would be. Many friends have come and gone, many family members are no longer with me in the physical, but my Savior, Jesus and His Holy Spirit are with me continuously. I know, I know, you may be reading this and thinking, “Just another religious nut trying to cram it down our throat.” Maybe you won’t finish reading the article. But maybe, just maybe it’s what you need to hear right now. Maybe this time of year all the different smells and sounds have brought back memories you don’t care to deal with. Maybe you are holding on to a moment of unforgiveness, heartbreak or loss. Maybe someone has created a situation in your life that you could not control, and you are at a breaking point, the anger and bitterness has taken root so deep that you cannot find peace. That can be changed, you know. I had a great loss a few years ago, December of 2016. My son died of a heart attack leaving 4 beautiful daughters and a wife behind. That was a hard phone call to take, and it’s even harder to watch my family go through the hurt, anger, and confusion that they have all been going through at different paces. But go THROUGH we must. Just like traveling down that country road, beautiful and serene as it is, there are still obstacles on the way through. Deer, raccoon, opossum….and if you have allergies you are probably going to get a nose full of pollen and be stuffy and sneezing like crazy! But we still go through, don’t we? And we do reach the other side of the valley. Sometimes it takes longer. Sometimes it is a painful process, but if we let the process complete what it has to complete in us, if we allow the God of all creation, Who’s very hand created us, do what He needs to do in us to bring us through to the end of the journey, we will come out better, stronger, and more capable to get through the next leg of the journey with a stronger sense of who we are in Christ. And that, my friends, is the key… in Christ! You can do all things IN CHRIST that will strengthen you. (Philippians 4:13) So yes…I am quite attached to my Savior and I am so ready to show you how you can be too! Time to go…I have a date with my new ride, Bluebelle and Jesus! Maybe we’ll meet on that country road sometime… Mary G

3. A Veteran qualifies under the “grandfather” provision related to distance eligibility under the Veterans Choice Program. 4. VA cannot furnish care within certain designated access standards. The specific access standards are described below: •

Drive time to a specific VA medical facility

Thirty-minute average drive time for primary care, mental health and noninstitutional extended care services.

Sixty-minute average drive time for specialty care.

Note: Drive times are calculated using geomapping software.

Appointment wait time at a specific VA medical facility

Twenty days from the date of request for primary care, mental health care and noninstitutional extended care services, unless the Veteran agrees to a later date in consultation with his or her VA health care provider.

Twenty-eight days for specialty care from the date of request, unless the Veteran agrees to a later date in consultation with his or her VA health care provider.

5. The Veteran and the referring clinician agree it is in the best medical interest of the Veteran to receive community care based on defined factors.

VA offers new health care options under MISSION Act

6. VA has determined that a VA medical service line is not providing care in a manner that complies with VA’s standards for quality based on specific conditions.

This past summer, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) launched its new and improved Veterans Community Care Program implementing portions of the VA Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks Act of 2018 (MISSION Act), which both ends the Veterans Choice Program and established a new Veterans Community Care Program.

The VA MISSION Act:

The MISSION Act strengthened the nationwide VA Health Care System by empowering Veterans with more health care options. “The changes not only improve our ability to provide the health care Veterans need, but also when and where they need it,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “It will also put Veterans at the center of their care and offer options, including expanded telehealth and urgent care, so they can find the balance in the system that is right for them.” Under the new Veterans Community Care Program, Veterans can work with their VA health care provider or other VA staff to see if they are eligible to receive community care based on new criteria. Eligibility for community care does not require a Veteran to receive that care in the community; Veterans can still choose to have VA provide their care. Veterans may elect to receive care in the community if they meet any of the following six eligibility criteria:

Strengthens VA’s ability to recruit and retain clinicians.

Authorizes “Anywhere to Anywhere” telehealth across state lines.

Empowers Veterans with increased access to community care.

Establishes a new urgent care benefit that eligible Veterans can access through VA’s network of urgent care providers in the community.

VA serves approximately 9 million enrolled Veterans at 1,255 health care facilities around the country every year. For more information, visit www.missionact.va.gov.

1. A Veteran needs a service not available at any VA medical facility. 2. A Veteran lives in a U.S. state or territory without a fullservice VA medical facility. Specifically, this would apply to Veterans living in Alaska, Hawaii, New Hampshire and the U.S. territories of Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Rides to Discover and Explore Are you an adventure rider? Do you look for destinations beyond your backyard? Do you enjoy the opportunities that just “show up” along the way? September was a month of adventure, destinations and opportunities. McConnells Mill State Park and Graffiti Highway Eight chicks and a guy met up for a 2 ½ day ride to our neighboring state of Pennsylvania. Our meet and greet location was in Salem, Ohio. One of the gals from Bandana Babes and Mettle with Grace Sisterhood broke down as she arrived in Salem. Once we learned of this, 2 gals from our group left dinner and rode to her rescue. It was almost closing time at Auto Zone where it was determined at that time it was the battery. Thankfully, the good Samaritans labored to get her back on the road for the next day’s ride to McConnells Mill State Park. Before arriving at the park, we stopped at New Castle Harley Davidson to take another look at her bike. The staff was very diligent in determining she needed a new voltage regulator. The customer service was epic as they went above and beyond to make sure we were on the road ASAP. McConnells Mill State Park is a hidden gem! We rode under rock cliffs, thru lush forests and explored the 1800’s functioning grist mill along cascading waterfalls. On we rode to Centralia, PA and walked on Graffiti Highway. There must have been layers and layers of spray paint with all forms of messages from visitors wanting to leave their mark on this abandoned section of highway. Once home to 5 mines and 2000 residents, Centralia changed forever in 1962 when a fire was set to a town dump. Fire spread to a coal seam underground, allowing the fire to access tunnels. Underground fires continued for years until it was determined a hazard to live there. It is to be believed that the fire has been burning for over 57 years. In 1984 all residents 18

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

were bought out by the government to ensure safety. Just a few local families are still living their life out in Centralia, but no new residents are allowed to move in. Our group met a couple of the local miners who still spend time along the abandoned portion of the highway to talk to visitors and share their stories. If you go, we stayed in Bloomsburg, PA, about 30 minutes away. www.cemtraliapa.org Spyderquest Rocks New York and Vermont We have all at one time or another rode in events or rallies where the number of bikes is staggering. It’s a thrill to be a part of a family that turns out in large numbers, shares a common interest and takes their position on the road to create an amazing stream of riders lining the roads for miles. That was the description that took place in Queensbury, New York the first weekend in September. Attendees from 13 states and 1 providence helped to make up the 398 participants along with 222 Spyders, 4 Rykers, 7 motorcycles, 1 conventional trike and 1 boss hog united at the Great Escape Lodge for the 7th annual Spyderquest. Because of Spyders in the Adirondacks and friendships that developed at that event, the newly formed friendships decided to start a new event. As a result of that idea in 2012, “Spyderquest- it’s all about the ryde”, began. A small committee was formed with 50 – 75 attendees. This year’s event was the largest to date. Every person who registers for this event automatically becomes a member of the NY Spyder Riders. Each year, the committee determines what charity to support. This year, it was the Make-A-Wish Foundation with an excess of $5,000 raised by rally attendees.

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Ron Netzley, president of NY Spyder Riders shared at the closing ceremonies; his son was a recipient of Make-A-Wish program over 30 years ago and today he is a successful businessman. For three full days, 17 designated rides choices were determined by each rider upon early registration. Averaging 100 – 250 miles, led rides explored various destinations including Whiteface Mountain, Sacandaga, Indian & Long Lake, President Coolidge Library, High Falls Gorge, Green Mountain, Norman Rockwall Museum & Sugar Shack in Vermont, Vermont Country Store, Equinox and covered bridge rides. The rally concluded with a parade of Spyders riding thru Six-Flags amusement park with curious on lookers followed by a buffet, Chinese auction, bingo, prizes and many new friendships and memories. This annual event is held the week following Labor Day.

A week after the rally, BRP Can-Am revealed the new lineup of 2020 Spyders. It definitely has a look that caught my eye with some very attractive features. This was a rally I would love to add to my annual ride calendar. In addition to the rally, I was able to meet up with my son and his fiancé who both live in Vermont. It doesn’t get any better than that! www.spyderquest.com www.nyspyderriders.com www.can-am.brp.com

We Say Goodbye… A silence and feeling of numbness fell over the Northeast Ohio motorcycle community upon hearing of the passing of one of our own, Ray, “Jake” Roach. As a friend to many, his legacy will continue through the doors of Genos 2.0, a long standing biker friendly bar in Medina owned by him and his wife Tami. He passed away living every moment to the fullest with family and friends. Hundreds of people shared in their condolences and respect with a motorcycle ride in his honor. Because of his love of riding, our memory of Jake will be long remembered. Thank you for giving and being a part of the family of riders. The Thunder Roads family also shares our heartfelt condolences to all those who loved him. Ride on Ray, ride on. “Don’t count the wheels, just enjoy the ride” Spyder Lilly Luvee

KENNEDY STYLE

by: Denise Kennedy, TRO

Kennedy Style has had a very busy month. Lots to do, people to see, and motorcycles to ride. One of the highlights over the past few weeks was a Lean Track Day and Endurance weekend at Nelson Ledges Road Course. Weekends like these are always interesting. They are a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones. However this particular weekend in August was special. A reunion of riders from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s were on hand to reminisce about the old days. On display were vintage bikes, photos, trophies and stories - lots of stories. Nelson Ledges Sports Car Course had been home to the 24 Hrs of Nelson Ledges motorcycle endurance race. Starting in 1969 the 24 hrs of Nelson pushed riders and motorcycles to the extreme. After a 25-year run, the last 24-hour motorcycle event was held in 1993. Riders battled fatigue, frogs, snakes, deer and other wildlife that roams in the night time hours, as well as a rough race track to claim bragging rights in one tough endurance race. Talking to the old timers was fascinating. Many remarked about how great it would be to run on the newly paved facility while others could not believe there were now flush toilets. The days of the old race track tested not only a rider's skills but their mental fortitude as well. Our race fix did not end there. A trip to Pittsburgh International Raceway and the MotoAmerica Championship of Pittsburgh the last weekend of August did not disappoint. Vendors on hand, stunt riders, and lots of close, hard racing in all classes. It's great to watch the pros but one of the coolest things all weekend were the kids racing in the Ohvale Talent Cup. By invitation only, these kids ranged in age from 10-14 and were simply unbelievable. Riding 110 cc and 160cc equally prepared motorcycles these kids put on a great show.

August ended and it was off to Thunder on the Strip. What a great weekend. NO RAIN!!! Imagine a Thunder weekend where riders did not have to dodge raindrops. Okay there were a couple of spritz's but not enough to dampen anyone's spirits. Thunder is one of the favorite rallys in the Kennedy household. Lots of roads to explore, people watching and the community that we share as riders. TRO's Thunder Zone was jumping. The new venue on the lake side of the strip was awesome with more than enough area to accommodate the amazing turnout for their annual bike show. Bands were plentiful and the weekend filled with blue skies brought out very large crowds. The calendar says Summer is about over. The days are numbered until the white stuff flies and the bikes are winterized. As the days get shorter enjoy your time in the fresh air and on the road. TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES

OCTOBER UPDATE!

The Bike Show Series

Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast!

The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes.

Tank Award Winner: Jack Morgan Jenni Wensel, TRO Staff Writer Jack Morgan, a man of heart, is the owner and operator of Morgan’s Garage. Much of Morgan’s free-time is spent in his garage, which is a non-commercial facility operated out of the back of his home. The garage and it’s projects allow Morgan to follow his passions. Morgan’s Garage takes old, rusted, junky motorcycles and turns them into eyecatching restorations and art pieces. Morgan’s art pieces go out to local bike shows and burn out contests as awards for the winners of these events. People absolutely love to get the intricate and unique art pieces Morgan makes! Morgan also donates some of his art pieces to local benefits when a motorcyclist is being honored or assisted after an injury. Additionally, he is the president of the Down Bikers Fund which helps local families in the Zanesville area in times of need. The Down Bikers Fund recently held there 28th Annual Poker Run that attracted over 1,500 people and helped raise money for many families in need. As Christmas nears, Morgan takes one of his old vans and the local biking community makes it a goal to completely fill the van with toys for children at Christmas.

In early September 2019, Morgan was chosen as the recipient for both a Judge’s Choice Award, for his bike rebuild “Miss Behavin’”, and the Tank Award. The Tank Award is named after Tank Ewsichek, who passed away in May 2019. Ewsichek was a great, humble guy who was always out helping people in his community and riding for charities. This award was created to honor his spirit and recognize gracious, talented souls in the motorcycle community.

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

“Should I buy

Total Control Advanced Riding Techniques In early July I obtained a copy of Lee Parks' book, Total Control High performance riding techniques. I read it thoroughly in preparation for taking the one day Total Control class held in

book is Ten Steps To Proper Cornering. For learning this, you need an instructor to show you how to position your body and a lot of other things. The book cannot observe your practice and personally coach you on how to improve. It doesn't show or explain the exercises used in the class because it would be pointless to attempt them without an instructor present. 4. What was the class like? Total Control is not a passive experience- you can't just sit there and be entertained all dayyou have to do the riding exercises. They are challenging, even though they are all at low speed on an airport tarmac. It's a oneday course, from 8am to 6pm with a half-hour lunch. (Our class ended at 730pm, about 11 hours of instruction and exercises.) Bryan Dunlap, one of my best friends from MSTA, took the class recently in Colorado and highly recommended it and Helene, who I already knew from MSTA. She is an expert rider and mechanical engineer who's been teaching MSF and other motorcycle courses for about 20 years. She is very perceptive in her coaching and genuinely excited when her students experience "Ah-Ha" moments, of which there are plenty. The day begins with a lecture and PowerPoint presentation. Following the format of the book, it starts out with discussion of Chassis Dynamics- traction, steering and suspension. Body Dynamics- fear, concentration and attitude- show ways to overcome our limitations and capitalize on strengths. Understanding these factors is important to understanding the rationale for the riding techniques to follow in the Body Dynamics section.

Anderson, Indiana and taught by Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) member Helene Villemure. It was quite an experience, and many of my friends have had questions about it. 1. Who should be interested in the book/class? If you have not been riding very long or lack riding skills this is not for you. If you are already a good rider who wants to take their skills to a new level, you need to take a serious look. 2. Class vs. book? Either way, just buy the book, which costs about $30. Read it cover to cover. Then you can decide if you are interested in taking the class. You can take it without reading the book, but it's a long day and there's a LOT of material presented. I already knew much of the material in the book, but it was a good review and is organized in a way that clarifies your thinking and makes the material easier to remember. Then if you take the class, you are not furiously scribbling notes and can more easily absorb all the additional ideas and techniques that will be presented. 3. Can I learn the important stuff from the book and practice on my own to master these techniques? That's theoretically possible but unlikely. The most important information in the 36

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Body Dynamics contains the meat of the course and is the most challenging. Topics include vision, line selection, throttle control, shifting, braking and body position. The exercises on the airport tarmac teach specific riding skills that can only be learned by doing and committing them to "muscle memory." The general format for an exercise is that everyone listens to Helene explain what is to be done and the objective. She then rides the course several times showing both right and wrong ways to do the exercise. Students then gear up, start their bikes and line up. Each exercise pass involves 1-1/2 - 2 laps of a circuit defined by cones. When you end each pass, you ride up to Helene for coaching. Each exercise is repeated for six to ten passes. Much of the exercise time was devoted to body positioning and the 10 step procedure for turns. This was the most difficult and most valuable part of the course. The class was "done" around 600PM, but for those who wanted to stay there was a presentation on suspension setup that clearly explained how to evaluate and adjust the suspension on your own bike. This included measuring sag, setting spring preload and damping. Helene had looked up suspension travel specifications on everyone's bike in advance and had them handy for calculating sag and spring rate. That session took THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

us up to 730pm, when class members said their goodbyes and departed. It was quite a day. I can't remember a time that I have had more fun and learned as much as in that class. The exercises were a bit stressful at first, but if you're going to expand your knowledge, you have to stretch a bit. My biggest concern was how much of a problem the "muscle memory" from 50 years of riding was going to be. Old habits die hard. Even when you know what to do it is a challenge to make the needed changes while riding in the real world. Find some nice deserted twisty roads to practice on. Ride by yourself or with a

friend if you want someone to observe you. Reducing my pace during practice gives me much-needed mental space to think about the steps and work on techniques. Expect to spend plenty of time practicing on your own after the class. The best advice I can give for those who want to take the Total Control Class? Open your mind. Let go of your current riding habits. If you've got a lot of experience, don't try to inject your opinion- go to listen and learn. You will not find a better instructor than Helene Villemure. Ohio’s Most “Over the Top” Motorcycle Event turns 70! The Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb Weekend returns to Oregonia Since 1949, riders have been racing up the infamous Devil’s Staircase – and for 70 years the Dayton Motorcycle Club has been hosting not only the races but throwing one of the Midwest’s Best Biker Bashes – the World-Famous Party on the Hill! This year the event falls on October 12-13th, and it might just be the biggest and best in years! Once again, the event will be covering two days - kicking off on Saturday, October 12th with dirt drags, grudge racing, and various motorcycle games. It’s an old school style field meet with live music to cap the day. All are welcome to join in the fun or come on out and simply cheer on those competing. No experience is needed and there is an endless supply of folks that can share their opinions and give a hand as needed.

It’s a perfect complement to the AMA PRO Hillclimb Races held on Sunday, October 13th. As we mentioned, this will be the 70th running of the Hillclimbs at Oregonia, making it one of the longest running motorcycle events in the country. It’s the culmination of the AMA PRO RACING series and generally determines the series Champions every year. For those coming out for Saturday, the DMC is offering overnight camping in their area across the street. It’s primitive, but there’s plenty of space along the river and woods within walking distance from all the festivities. It’s a beautiful area and allows you to inexpensively camp right at the event and start your day – at the Hillclimbs! At night there will be live entertainment and plenty of fun for those choosing to stay!

Ohio’s Most “Over the Top” Motorcycle Event turns 70! What’s a Dirt Drag? A Dirt Drag or Field Meet, as some call them, are a drag race on a dirt track. There is some type of fencing or barrier between spectators and racers, but the racing can be seen up close and experienced with the engine sounds, the smell of fuel and very often a cloud of dust. All of that might turn you off a bit, but I assure you that it adds to the excitement of seeing the racers roar down the track. The dirt track is set up in two lanes for two racers at a time. There is a finish line for the end of the track and ample distance for the racers to stop at the end. The thing that makes it a bit more formal than just street drag racing is that they usually have a start light or triple tree. The lights flash the countdown for the start of the race from yellow to green to signal the start of each heat. Spectators are able follow along as competitors set their start position, watch the countdown and see them fly down the track. There are usually some cheers and applause from the audience when racers make a fast run. There are false starts, stall outs at the start or even flips. Occasionally, racers do wreck and get injured. It adds to the excitement when the racers take off and the front wheel pulls off the ground. Many racing motorcycles have wheelie bars on the back of the bike to keep them from flipping and throwing the driver.

two of the class. The start of each class is announced. Then an announcement is heard, this is the “winner run”, “trophy run”, “final run of the class” and people eagerly watch from start to finish to see which racer is the winner. There is usually one, sometimes two jackpot races. The Jackpot usually brings out a large number of racers, most with some experience and fast motorcycles. These are very exciting, fast heats. As you watch the races, you will be able to feel and experience the excitement as the winner of each heat moves on to the next race then to final elimination race. Most dirt drags also have some comedy relief added in with the Wiener Race, or Water Bucket race. These are fun

challenge partner races that anyone can join in. For these races, a rider and passenger work together to win. During the wiener race, the passenger takes a bite of the hotdog from the back of the bike while the rider goes slow or stops and wait for them to take a bite before they can finish the race. The Water Bucket Race involves the rider balancing a water bucket on a board over their head as the motorcycles race down the track. As you can imagine, there ends up being more than a few wet people. These race participants could be someone you know or even you. If you have never seen motorcycle drags, you should really check them out and experience it for yourself.

The racers are divided into different classes based on age, size of the motorcycle or ATV, engine size or even tire type or size. There are racers of all ages, from children to adult. Some racers appear to be very experienced and know how to race. Even some of the very young child racers seem to have experience while others need prompting from their parent to get down the track. This makes their part of the racing entertaining, enjoyable and a little comical. The racers are lined up by classes and race two at a time in elimination races. The racing continues, until they are down to the final 40

GOTL Thunder Zone Finds a New Home ON THE LAKE! The Old Firehouse Winery and Sunset Bar host TRO and the 9th Annual Thunder Zone Bike Show For 9 years Thunder Roads Ohio has been setting up and hosting a Thunder Zone in Geneva-on-the-Lake (GOTL) as part of the Thunder on the Strip festivities. Right from start, we realized that this was something special as the motorcycle community seemed a perfect fit for this classic lakefront resort town. The small-town format with the main strip down the middle made for a great atmosphere that’s become more of a “family reunion” than anything for Northeast Ohio riders and those that have had a chance to attend. And the really cool part is that it’s like one of those get-togethers where you walk away realizing that you’ve got a much bigger family than you ever knew. Over the years the rally has grown and some of the faces have changed, with new principles and venues evolving. Our own GOTL Thunder Zone Bike Show had grown into one of the biggest ride-in shows in the state and it was only due to the rain in 2017 and 2018 that we were able to accommodate everyone (we still filled the lot – even with steady rain each morning). So, for 2019 the decision was made to switch locations – and we moved down the street to The Landing and Sunset Bar area, adjacent to the Old Firehouse Winery. And looking back, we couldn’t have been more pleased with how things turned out!

44

The Landing Festival Marketplace is a park-like setting that hosts craft fairs on Saturdays throughout the summer and truly offers the best lakefront views in GOTL. The area was once home to a small amusement park, back in the day, and still has a vintage ferris wheel overlooking the lake. Anchored by the Old Firehouse Winery, the west end of the Landing is the perfect spot to watch the Sunset (ie., why it’s called The Sunset Bar) and the layout proved the perfect spot for riders to relax and enjoy the weekend.

A handful of vendors joined Thunder Roads Ohio and set up around the Sunset Bar – offering everything from rally t-shirts and biker jewelry to tattoos and blinged outfits for the ladies. There was even an installer offering neon light installations while riders partied on the strip. The new location seemed as if it was 3-4 times the space we previously had – which allowed us to spread out much more comfortably and offer FREE motorcycle parking throughout the weekend. all the festivities. Even with everything going on, the picturesque views of the lake kept things cool and relaxed – and it was just the place for us to call home for the Rally. The legendary Ted Riser and Tyrone’s Blue Sinsation (TBS) provided live entertainment at the Sunset Bar and the winery had a full lineup of bands all weekend - so there was always great music playing throughout. Late night though, the entertainment got a little wilder – as the Purple Pirate from Daytona Beach and his crew took a break from their tattoo activities and focused on the “side show” aspects of their production. Their shows included fire dancing / eating, suspension feat’s, and even a doublesided bed of nails that they were far too happy to offer to guests for the evening. The TRO crew had a great time as riders from across the Midwest stopped by and many ended up coming back and hanging out throughout the weekend, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere laced with cool entertainment. It really was like Homecoming Weekend. Here are just a few pictures of the 2020 GOTL Thunder Zone and there are hundreds more online – accessible through Facebook (www.facebook.com/ ThunderRoadsOhio) or our website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com). Next month we will focus on the Thunder Zone Bike Show and the amazing bikes that participated. It was our biggest one of the entire year – and easily the best we’ve ever had at Thunder; Which is quite a statement, if you consider that many of our winners have gone on to win national recognition over the years. But more on that next month.. We’d like to close though, with thanks for our new partners and everyone that helped make the move possible. Change is never an easy thing, but everyone pulled together and made the weekend an incredible success. We can’t wait to return!

Stolen Valor I think when most of us hear Stolen Valor, we think of the military. Some knob head walking around pretending to be a soldier for the positive attention it may garner themselves. But in actuality it can mean simply taking credit for actions not completed. It’s election time, and down here in Florida some chick was running for some office, and she lied about her degree from a college in Ohio. A little fact checking by a watch dog group exposed that even though she somehow actually posted a picture holding her degree, that she never actually finished college and the picture is a fake. Now for me, she’s a perfect political candidate. Hell, she hasn’t even been elected and she’s already lying! Ha! I am often asked what I think about these pop-up clubs that literally start overnight and sew on their new 1% diamonds fresh off the internet patch store. To me, it’s the same thing- Stolen Valor. Most clubs that I know that wear a 1% diamond, have done so for 40+ years. It’s literally impossible to live the 1% lifestyle of the days of old in modern times, as most will end up quickly in prison in this snitch a** crybaby society. Too many sell outs and too many cell phones. Yes, it is also true in my opinion that many clubs wearing the 1% are living off the reputation of a 30 or 40-year-old history, and not the base of their current membership. But that’s another article maybe someday. So, what do I think of these clubs popping up all over and putting on a diamond? I think you’re 30 years too late, and you are trying to steal the recognition and notoriety of past MC clubs whose members actually

paid the price of that diamond, and at the very least, their older members probably earned it. I think that you should also know that pretty much all of us in the MC life with history feel the same as I do. You look stupid, not intimidating or “cool”, or to be feared or respected. In fact the total opposite. We are not afraid of you, nor do we respect you simply because you sewed on a 1% diamond. You look stupid and desperate. Hell, Ted Bundy admitted to murdering 30 people, but he didn’t wear a 1% diamond, and he was truly a dangerous man. Don’t fear the man that

tells you he’s dangerous, fear the man who shows you.

What most of these egos driven “leaders” fail to realize is that they are putting their brothers in potential of harms way, simply to satisfy their own inflated opinion of themselves. In most cases, these pop up “nomad” rockers and 1% diamond wearing clubs rarely last 2-5 years. Many are made up of failures from multiple other established clubs, and they washed out for their lack of commitment, or for putting themselves above the brotherhood, and their old habits now follow them to their newest endeavor at pretending to be something that they are not. We remain unimpressed. You want to impress us? Find an established nation, earn their respect, join them and make them better. That’s a real 1%er in my book. Keep it Real, by Being Real! BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT LITTLE GUNS, LITTLE KNIVES, LITTLE LIGHTS … WHEN LESS IS A BETTER OPTION OR THE ONLY OPTION WE HAVE BY MIKE PANNONE, NRACARRYGUARD.COM

Although many will discount the benefits of smaller self-defense and personal protection items, there is no doubt that having something is always better than having nothing, especially when your safety and perhaps even your survival depends upon it. I frequently carry an ultra-compact pistol in.380ACP (Ruger LCP with Crimson Trace Laser Guard), an extremely small folding knife (Kershaw 1310WM Hotwire) and either a Surefire Backup or Stiletto flashlight. I'd obviously rather carry a full-size everything but often it's just not an option. That said, because I practice and am competent with that small pistol, knife and light, I am confident that with proper awareness and prudent decision making it is enough to get me out of a problematic situation. Little GunsLegality- in some locals even though it is possible to get a CCW and carry legally, the risk of compromise can initiate a scene or a call to local law enforcement that "there's a man in the restaurant with a gun" which can end very poorly. For those reasons it may be a better choice to have a firearm that is extraordinarily small and ultra-concealable. Base-line effectiveness- as for caliber, the rule of thumb is no less than .380ACP but I'd rather have a small, high quality .22LR, .25ACP or .32ACP than nothing at all. Yes, more caliber is generally better as far as effectiveness is concerned but any caliber is better than no caliber. Over the years I've carried the following small guns from .22LR to .380 ACP: Beretta M21 and 2032, Kel-Tek P32 and P3AT, Ruger LCP and Glock 42. They all could be comfortably pocket carried and I always felt better having them on my person and with them felt capable of getting out of a bad spot if necessary. There are other high quality ultracompact pistols out there so these are just ones I've personally carried but in no way are the only ones available.

(Ruger LCP II Centerfire Pistol) Reliability- small shouldn't mean unreliable. Any gun regardless of caliber should be reliable and that's not even negotiable. I had a Beretta 21A in .22lr and it ran anything reliably. Yes, it

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights. buckeyefirearms.org

was a .22lr but in a pinch it's better than nothing and it's solely a defensive tool. Most attacks are not planned by the perpetrator to engage in a shootout with the victim. In common speak, "they didn't come for a gunfight, they came for free stuff". Having a gun makes the potential benefit of an attack drop to near zero because of the lethal potential the victim now presents and that changes the situation immediately. Again, in the case of an attack on a perceived unarmed person "any caliber is better than no caliber". Portability/Concealability- this is obviously the emphasis of the article and the single unique requirement that drives the debate, the clothing and the caliber. Often men and women have wardrobes and requirements that are very restrictive of space available for concealment of a handgun. For this reason, the smallest handgun that can be carried in a secure concealed location and can be effectively fired is at the discretion of the end user. Look for an ultra-compact, high quality handgun and when concealment is a challenge, carry it instead of being unarmed. From a combative perspective, the benefit of an edged weapon is that it takes very little skill to be lethal … that is also the drawback. Literally anyone with an edged weapon and intent is a lethal threat. We need only look back to September 11, 2001 to see that blade length and overall configuration are far less important to effect than is intent. Though I must admit I am a huge fan of custom and high-quality production folders and fixed blades I often carry a very inexpensive CRKT 1310WM Hotwire folder I bought at Walmart on a trip for $9.86. Its sharp as a scalpel and does all the cutting chores I need it to do but is easier to carry than a pen in my pocket. It is a cutting edge that will allow me to open boxes, cut food, cut a seatbelt or be employed as a defensive tool with very substantial effectiveness. Again, it doesn't have to big or expensive as much as it must be present.

Little lightsIn the absence of ambient light, your own handheld can often be a lifesaver. Any light that creates a reasonably focused beam and can create 30 lumens or more with the preference being 60-90 lumens will be of great benefit in any environment where ambient lighting is not present or artificial lighting has failed. There are several high-quality lights available with LED bezels that can create anywhere from 30-300 lumens and run on AAA, AA or CR123 batteries and some models like my Surefire Stiletto are rechargeable. I've personally carried Maglite, O-Lite, Streamlight and Surefire lights at different times and places and have had all perform as advertised and as needed. I have lights in all my vehicles and carry a small one daily. I view it as a safety tool that is a requirement for day to day activities. With increased lumen output you will invariably have increased size and batter life usage. I am convinced that a good 90 lumen light is enough to navigate a dark area and engage with a firearm out to 15 yards with substantial effectiveness. There are lights ranging from micro to compact readily available now that range from 30-300 Lumens and $12$200. Find one that fits your needs and have it with you daily.

The most salient point of this piece is that often a locale', vocation or clothing choice may preclude carryingPRICE of larger security NEED ATtheTHE YOU and WANT! support items i.e. gun, knife and light. For this THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

(SureFire Back-up flashlight) reason, we must look objectively at the benefits that smaller items can still provide and take advantage of their stealthy nature to enhance their effectiveness. Finding an ultra-compact gun, knife and light should be on your list before you purchase another full-size or even compact item of each kind. For the reasons and rationale stated above, sometimes a little gun, a little knife and a little light are the best option we have…since not carrying what's needed to safeguard yourself is not an option!

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Our XS650 Barn Find Revival continues… Last month, I discussed the initial process of getting the XS running and taking it for a few short rides. The short rides were definitely a victory, but it was a long way from being truly road worthy.

enough to allow for a solid wall of the bolt for the ez-out to grab. Once you drill the hole, insert the ez-out into the hole. Tap it in with a ball peen hammer. This will make the sharp edges of the ez-out grab the steel of the bolt. Once you are confident that the ez-out is solidly in place, put a tap wrench on the ez-out and try to back the bolt out. Hopefully the ez will bite into the bolt harder than the bind on the threads of the bolt. With the XS, most of the bolts came out with the left handed bit, but two did require the ez-out.

We received at tire donation to replace the front. I used the tire machine at Skidmark to mount and balance the tire. A huge thank you goes out to that mysterious person who made the donation. After a few short rides the carburetors began to get difficult again. Dirt must have still been trapped in a few crevices inside the carb body. It is not uncommon for me to have to clean the carburetors multiple times before I get them clean, so I had to disassemble, clean, and adjust the floats again. In addition to more dirt getting trapped in the jets, apparently the float stock settings were ever so slightly too high, and when the bike was on the kick stand, the gas would come out the overflow on the left carb. After slight adjustment of the float, and gas was staying in place. In the process of going through the bike and setting all the cables properly, I noticed the side of the engine case flexing every time I pulled the clutch in. I discovered that four of the bolts were missing from the left side over. One of the bosses that the bolt threaded into was broke off. I am guessing this was the first fastener to fail - and then, over time - it was a chain reaction from there. The repair for this was not simple. I had to drill into the case deeper. Luckily there was enough mass there to get half an inch of thread engagement on the bolt. Before drilling out a broken bolt, it is important to take your time and put a quality center punch dimple into the broken bolt. It is of the utmost importance to get this dimple on center because the closer to center the hole is, the better the ez-out will work for backing the bolt out. Sine the bolt is likely a hardened steel, the drill bit is going to want to walk to the side until you have a good hole started. So once you get a quality center dimple, it may not hurt to hit the center punch a few times to get the dimple more defined. The deeper a THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

punch dimple is, the better the rest of the process will be. A good tool to use next is a left handed drill bit. Left handed drill bits are the same design as your normal drill bit, but the flutes on the drill are wound in a counter clockwise direction. These are great for removing broken bolts because as the drill bit bites into the bolt, it forces the bolt to back itself out. Best case - it bites and backs the bolt out. Worst case -it just puts a hole in the center of the bolt and you still use an ez-out. When selecting the drill bit, ideally you want one that is in between 55 and 70% of the bolt diameter. This is a nice balance between a hole that is accommodating to the appropriate size ez-out, but small

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

Once you get the bolt out, it is important to run a tap through the hole. This will help to repair or reshape any damaged threads. Also, it may clean out any debris that caused the bolt to jam in the first place. After taping the threads, clean all the penetrating oil and chips out of the hole, and use new bolts of the appropriate grade. Next month we will try and sort out some electrical issues. TECH TIPS WINTERIZE YOUR BIKE

substances that can affect the carburetor. Run the bike so the gas and fuel stabilizer get to the carburetor and fuel injectors.then turn off the fuel and run it dry. It’s important to note that you DON’T want to leave any Ethanol blended gas in your tank for any extended period of time. The ethanol will absorb the moisture and develop a thick sludge within the tank.

While I make every effort to ride year round, the reality is that not only do I live in Ohio - I live in the “Snow Belt”. Some “hard core” riders scoff at the idea of storing your bike, but reality is that at the very least you will be riding her less. This is especially important if you have more than one bike. One of the worst things you can do to your motorcycle - especially the engine - is to simply leave it sitting there. Rust starts to form everywhere, rubber seals and o-rings dry out and harden, and your gas degrades (especially if you have any Ethanol in it). If you simply push your bike into the corner of your garage and walk away for a few months - don’t be surprised if it won’t run in the spring. If you want it to fire up and run first thing when you want it - you need to take care of it and properly winterize it. The following is a general list of items that you should consider as you prepare your bike for storage. Of course, all bikes are different and many have unique needs. Check your manual or with a service tech for advice as to your bike’s specific needs.

The “stuff” you’ll need. You will need, cleaning cloths, spark plug wrench, a trickle battery charger, four or five quarts of high quality oil, new oil filter, oil can or device to get oil in the cylinders, chain lube (if you have a chain drive), fuel stabilizer, spray can of WD40, a breathable motorcycle cover, kitchen plastic wrap, rubber bands, vinyl or plastic gloves, items to clean and wax your bike. Lastly a nice location for the bike to spend the winter, a heated secure garage would be ideal. Avoid wind, dripping water, vermin, mildew, and chemical fumes.

68

3. Drain your Float Bowls, if you have a carburetor. 1. Clean your Bike. A gentle wash detergent and water will suffice. By removing road grime and insects you will protect the finish of the bike. Avoid spraying water directly into the opening of the muffler. If baffles get wet and are not dried prior storage, internal rust could result. Likewise avoid moisture in the air cleaner housing. If the housing becomes saturated, it could act as a choke, making your bike difficult to start. Use a blow dryer, leaf blower, or a commercial motorcycle blower to dry and then detail with a good chamois. Clean and polish all aluminum and stainless surfaces with the appropriate metal polish. Finally finish up with a coat of good wax polish on all painted and chrome surfaces. Clean the chain (if you have one). Spray off all the built up residues with WD40. Lube the chain.

2. Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank. Fill your tank with gas as full as it can go. This is very important. As fuel ages, more volatile components tend to change, leaving sludge and gummy

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Shut off the gas petcock and drain the gas from the carburetor bowls. Consult your manual for location of drain screws. Of course if you have a fuel-injected bike, there isn’t anything to drain.

4. Change your Oil Oil chemistry changes over periods of extended storage. Old oil can develop acidic qualities, which can corrode engine parts.

5. Oil the front forks. Using a “turkey baster” put oil over the stationary tubes on the front forks. Then get onto the bike and bounce the bike up and down, while holding the front brake. This will work the front suspension and spread the oil. The oil will keep the rubber seals from drying out and protect the exposed fork tubes.

6. Pull the Spark Plugs Remove spark plug wires, and carefully with a spark plug wrench remove the plugs. With your oil-squirting device, get some motor oil in the cylinders. Approximately one teaspoon of oil will work well. Tuck the plug wires away somewhere safe so they do not arc, then spin the motor with the starter for a few revolutions to get the oil spread around. Remember to keep your face away from the spark plug holes. Oil will squirt out! Clean and gap the plugs and put them back in. Replace plug wires.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! 7. Remove the Battery

Check the tire pressure. Adjust as needed and leave a reminder to check in Spring. Cleaning the chrome and aluminum parts on your bike - especially rims - with a good polish will keep them relatively clean and easier for Spring clean up. A light coating of silicone lube will give limited protection while in storage. It will need to be washed off before taking out when the weather breaks.

10. Check the “little things” Some batteries may require charging every four weeks with a “Battery Tender” type of charger. Built up sulfates on the plates can ruin a battery during cold storage and inactivity. A thin coat of Vaseline to the terminals on the battery can prevent corrosion. This small step will mean an easier spring start up and no extra cost of battery replacement.

8. Check your coolant.

(If you have a liquid cooling system on your bike.) Check it’s level of anti-freeze with a hygrometer. Drain, flush and replace antifreeze if necessary. We suggest this replacement be done every two years. Do not leave the antifreeze level low or empty, this could lead to rust or corrosion of the cooling system. Check all other fluid levels at this time.

9. Check your Tires and Wheels.

Lube your cables. Lube suspension and pivot points. Lube the drive shaft (if you have one). Check the air cleaner and the fuel filter. Look at brake pads. Give your bike a good once over.

11. Clean and Treat all Leather and Vinyl Detail your leathers with a cleaner or conditioner such as Eagle One Carnuba Leather Cream or Mother’s Leather Cleaner. While you have it out, this is a great time to clean up your leather riding gear as well. After the cleaner or conditioner is dry, buff with a soft cloth. There are several good vinyl cleaners you can use - and then follow with a vinyl protector..

temperatures may affect sensitive gauges and other equipment during winter storage. Why risk it?

14. Store the Bike If your storage location is bare concrete, we suggest using a piece of plywood, MDF, or old thick carpet. This will insulate the bike from becoming damp. We also suggest storing your bike with all the weight removed from the wheels. A bike stand or some blocking works if you have a wheeled lift. A center stand and some blocking will work too. Do not store your bike near any ozone emitting devices, such as motors, freezers, furnaces or electric heaters. The gasses they create will deteriorate rubber parts. Cover your motorcycle with a good breathable cover or a soft cotton bed sheet to keep the dust off. This does not prevent condensation from forming on your ride, but it keeps dust, etc. off the motorcycle.

14. DON’T run the engine for short periods of time over the storage period, this can lead to condensation due to engine and combustion byproducts in the oil. With the battery tender on there is no reason for this.

12. Protect the Metal With a clean cloth, wipe good quality light machine oil over all the metal surfaces, except the disc brakes. Spray a little WD40 in the tail pipe(s). Cover your tail pipe opening and the air intake with plastic wrap and a rubber band. You can also cover drain hoses as well. This will prevent any opportunistic pests from making a cozy winter home in your bike.

13. Remove the Accessories Take off any removable accessories, especially electronics or temperature sensitive items. If you have a “Temp Oil Gauge” dipstick - remove it and replace it with the original. Store the “Temp Gauge” in a warm place for the winter. Extreme

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... Your Badge

Two Nuns and a Mini Dracula Two nuns, Sister Mary Agnes and Sister Mary Vincent, are traveling through Europe in their car, sightseeing in Transylvania. As they are stopped at a traffic light, out of nowhere, a small vampire jumps onto the hood of the car and hisses at them through the windshield. "Quick, quick!" shouts Sister Mary Agnes, "What should we do?" "Turn the windshield wipers on. That will get rid of the abomination," says Sister Mary Vincent. Sister Mary Agnes switches on the wipers, which knock the mini-Dracula around. But, he hangs on and continues hissing at the nuns. "What shall I do now?" she shouts. "Try the windshield washer. I filled it with holy water before we left the Vatican," replies Sister Mary Vincent. Sister Mary Agnes turns on the windshield washer. The vampire screams as the water burns his skin, but he hangs on and continues hissing at the nuns. "Now what?" shouts Sister Mary Agnes. "Show him your cross," says Sister Mary Vincent.

A US special agent pulled up to a ranch house in Texas and talked with an older rancher. He told the rancher, “I need to search your ranch for an escaped fugitive we believe to be in the area.” The rancher said, “Okay no problem, but don’t go in that field over there…..”, as he pointed out the field. The agent verbally exploded saying, “Sir, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me!” Reaching into his coat pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. “See this badge?! This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish…. On any land !! No questions asked or answers given!! Have I made myself clear……do you understand ?!!” The rancher nodded politely, apologized, and went about his chores as the agent headed straight out to the field. A short time later, the rancher heard a loud scream coming from the direction of the field. He looked up and saw the agent running for his life, being chased by the rancher’s big Texan Bull… With every step the bull was gaining ground on the agent, and it seemed likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. The rancher threw down his tools, ran to the fence and yelled at the top of his lungs….. “Your badge, show him your f*****g BADGE…….. ! !”

I was at the bar the other night with my buddy having some beers. We had been there a while when two large girls came up to the bar and ordered some drinks. I noticed when they ordered they both had strong accents so I said ‘Hi, are you two girls from Scotland?’ One of them spoke up, with quite an attitude and said ‘it’s WALES you idiot!!!’ So I immediately said ‘Sorry, are you two Whales from Scotland?’ An Irishman, an Englishman and a Scotsman go into a pub and each order a pint of Guinness. Just as the bartender hands them over, three flies buzz down, and one lands in each of the pints. The Englishman looks disgusted, pushes his pint away and demands another pint. The Scotsman picks out the fly, shrugs and takes a long swallow. The Irishman reaches into the glass, pinches the fly between his fingers and shakes him while yelling, "Spit it out, ya bastard! Spit it out!" A blonde goes on a hot date and ends up making out with the guy in his car. The guy asks if she would like to go in the backseat. "No!" yells the blonde. Things get even hotter, and the guy asks again. "For the last time, no!" says the blonde. Frustrated, the guy asks, "Well, why the hell not?"

"Now you're talking," says Sister Mary Agnes. She then opens the window and shouts, "Get the hell off our car!"

The blonde says, "Because I wanna stay up here with you!"

RECIPES

This is one of my favorite cheesy chicken dishes!! it plays off the flavors of french onion soup but has it own yummy twists!

French Onion Stuffed Chicken Serves 6 (or 3 hungry bikers)

Bacon Wrapped Grilled Corn - Great Oven Roasted Too 6 pc Corn on the cob, shucked and cleaned 1 package hickory smoked bacon 2tsp salt 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp paprika 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp onion powder 2 tsp dried oregano ½ tsp cayenne pepper 6 tbsp butter 6 sheets foil Mix all seasonings into a small bowl Rub the cleaned corn with 1 tbsp butter per ear and rub on seasoning mix Wrap each piece with 2-3 pieces of bacon each Wrap in foil tightly and twist ends to tighten To grill: cook for 30-40 minutes turning every 5 To Oven Roast:Bake @ 350 for 30 minutes

1 tsp olive oil 3 onions, sliced very thinly 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs 3 tbsp garlic, minced 12 deli slices Swiss cheese (if you use the little squares you may need more) 6 skin and boneless chicken breasts Salt and pepper to taste 3-4 cups bread cubes, plain or seasoned (like you use for stuffing) (i use stove top stuffing lol) 2 cups chicken stock Pre heat oven to 350 In large nonstick skillet, over medium heat. Add in the sliced onion sauté until golden brown. Add in the minced garlic and sauté another 5 minutes then remove from heat Stir in bread crumbs and set aside. Take each chicken breast and lay them flat on a cutting board Cut a horizontal slit into each breast, but not all the way through, so it will open like a book On one side, spoon 1/6-th of the onion mix and 1 slice of cheese folded in half or thirds so it sort of ‘fits’. (if they dont all fit its ok, just put them on top of the chicken breasts) Place the all the stuffed chicken breasts into an oven safe casserole dish Salt and pepper the top of each breast lightly Place the remaining slices of cheese over the chicken so that each one is covered Sprinkle the stuffing bread cubes over everything Pour the chicken stock slowly over all the bread crumbs, don’t worry if you miss some the chicken and cheese will release some liquid during cooking time Cover with tin foil and bake for 30 minutes Remove from oven and take the tin foil off then return to oven to bake another 30 minutes Remove and allow to cool about 10 minutes, then enjoy!

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! - The Iron Cowboy
