FROM THE PUBLISHER As most everyone knows, these are unique and trying times. While this Nation has faced countless challenges through the years, it’s hard to think of a time when we have been hit with so many blows at once from so many directions and with so many seemingly absurd. It’s hard to believe some of the issues that we are dealing with. If we had been told ten years ago what the headlines were today, we might have laughed it off as an absurd movie script – too crazy to be believed. The undeniable fact, though, is that we only have ourselves to blame. We, as a nation, have looked the other way for far too long and not stepped up when faced with absurd challenges to our own beliefs and core values. Sadly, I’m not just talking about national politics or philosophical topics. I’m talking about issues that effect us all – right here in our own towns, our own homes, and yes – within our own riding community. We are coming off several years of unbelievable challenges and restrictions – some from COVID, some from staffing and supply shortages, and some from us turning the reigns over to a new woke generation that doesn’t believe in many of the most fundamental rights or freedoms that we have taken for granted. If there’s one lesson to be taken from the past two years, it’s that we cannot take anything for granted.
If there are events that you enjoy, make sure that you get out and support them. If there are organizations and businesses that you appreciate, make sure that you get out and support them. Give them your business and support their events. Even something as basic as a local motorcycle magazine might just become a thing of the past as up and coming marketing experts advise companies that “print media” is a thing of the past – and that nobody really likes to read anymore. I’ve even had one “marketing professional” recently tell me that the “written word itself” will become a thing of the past as all communication becomes video and “txting”. Even using a phone to talk is already considered “old school” and outdated. With this in mind, I’d like to sincerely thank each and every sponsor and supporting organization for committing themselves to what we do. I sincerely believe in what we do in serving not only the riding community but our nation as a whole. We provide a forum through which organizations can connect to riders – without the use of modern social media. While we use Facebook – it is but one aspect and a means of getting our message out. We are NOT reliant on it. Sadly, it would seem as though our nation has largely given up on the mainstream independent press as represented by newspapers and local media in favor of high-tech social media companies controlled by several blatantly biased executives. They are our nation’s true oligarchs – spoon feeding us information that they see fit and blocking narratives that they don’t care for. And like sheep being led to shearing or worse, we passively let ourselves be led with just an occasional “bleat” to signal our displeasure. So what can we do? We can get out and support the local businesses we want to see succeed. We get out and support the causes that matter – and we question the paths down which we are being led. Pick up the LOCAL motorcycle mag and READ, instead of depending on regulated social media forums for information. Pick up the phone and CALL friends and family instead of texting or stalking their posts. And better yet – get on your bike and RIDE to visit them. We aren’t sheep – we’re BIKERS and we can choose our own paths to take. LIVE STRONG and RIDE TO BE HEARD! Sincerely, D. A. SMITH Publisher

As Told By
THE IRON COWBOY JOIN THE THUNDER ROADS CREW! Lots of opportunities to help out at events, take pictures, serve as a local ROAD REP, or even work from home helping out ONLINE! This is going to be an exciting year as Thunder Roads Ohio and the Iron Cowboy Crew emerge from a few fairly challenging years – just like everyone else.
Thunder Roads Ohio Offers EXPANDED ON-LINE Ride Registration and Ticket Sales Powered by ReasonsToRide.com ReasonsToRide.com (RtR) and Thunder Roads Ohio is now offering the ability to include RIDER REGISTRATION as part of your online event listings and magazine ads. This allows riders to simply and easily sign up for your event without ever leaving the website – and without having to register onsite the day of the event.
However, we are excited about the upcoming year and everything we have going on! We’ve taken a new approach to events and added over a dozen NEW locations to our calendar – including COUNTY BIKE SHOWS, MORE TATTOO EVENTS, and MORE BIKE NIGHT and RIDE APPEARANCES than ever before! The TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES will be bigger than ever with projected attendance at these events totaling well over 500,000!
Pre-registration allows you to more accurately plan for your event by having a listing of participants already committed and invested in it. Pre-registration also helps protect your ride from cloudy days that might also have people staying home, but will choose to still come out since they are already pre-paid.
By joining with new partners – we’re also hitting the road to more events out of state, including DAYTONA BIKE WEEK, STURGIS, LONE STAR, and major events throughout the MIDWEST! Online we’ve partnered with ReasonsToRide.com to offer the MOST POWERFUL motorcycle resource on the internet! Through ReasonsToRide.com and now ThunderRoadsOhio.com as well – we can now offer interactive event listings that allow you to view the actual location, map to an event, and even register for the ride or get concert tickets right on our website! And it’s a proven system that processed more than $5 MILLION in ticket sales just last year!
RtR is also able to offer RIDE SHIRTS and PATCHES as part of the process as well. Shirts are a great way to promote your event and offer more value to those participating. With advance sales and riders indicating what size shirts they need – you’ll also avoid having to invest in unwanted shirts. You’ll have exactly what you need.
It's all REALLY EXCITING STUFF – and it means we are growing, with new needs for folks all across Ohio and even out of state! With our expanded online aspects, there is a lot that you can even do from home! It’s pretty cool and the potential is almost limitless.
RtR can also help develop graphics and promotional materials – including posters and cards to professionally represent your ride. This helps with sponsorships and encourages ride participation.
For Riding Organizations – we have great opportunities to partner with Thunder Roads Ohio in your area. We need with events and getting the word out – in exchange we help promote your group’s events as well. There are also opportunities for groups to raise funds for your organization or designated charities by partnering with TRO and covering the local riding community. In most cases, you don’t really need experience and we aren’t looking for professional sales people. That’s really not what we do. We are looking for RIDERS that can help represent TRO and IRON COWBOY at events and rides all across Ohio – and looking ahead, across the Midwest and at some of the largest motorcycle events in the country. It’s going to be a GREAT YEAR – join the team and LET’S RIDE! To find out more, send an email to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

PRO TIP: You can add QR codes to your posters and event ads that take riders directly to YOUR unique registration page through Thunder Roads – even on the day of the event! You can also create signs with these QR codes to display on-site the day of the event. For Iron Pony’s RIDE FOR THE RHINOS – event organizers were able to use display stands with the QR codes and easy instructions for riders to register online even on the morning of the ride. This expedited the process incredibly and allowed well over 1,000 participants to easily check-in with half as many volunteers involved.

Maumee, Oh – D. A. Smith, Thunder Roads Ohio Thunder Roads Ohio, Ohio’s Motorcycle Magazine, is pleased to announce that they have teamed up with representatives from the Lucas County Fair and Northwest Ohio Veteran’s Groups to host the First Annual GREATER TOLEDO VETERAN’S RIDE. This multiday ride will conclude with participants turning in their cards at the Lucas County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 – which is Veteran’s Day at the Fair.
In addition to the Veteran’s programs and regular Fair activities, Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting a BIKE SHOW and TRO Thunder Zone area on the fairgrounds. In the spirit of the day, there will be special classes for Military vehicles and service themed bikes in the Bike Show. Additional classes will include “Patriotic” themed motorcycles and even racing, high performance bikes. Trophies and placards will be awards to participants. All riders are welcome to participate, and all stops will be open to the public - not just Vets. For those that haven’t served in the military, it’s a great opportunity to gain greater insight and appreciation for the veteran community.
The Greater Toledo Veteran’s Ride (GTVR) will be hosted by American Legion Riders Post #320 with the support of other Posts and Veterans Service Organizations throughout Northwest Ohio. While proceeds from the ride will benefit VETERANS MATTER (VeteransMatter.org) and their homeless veterans housing program – a more immediate goal is to create more awareness of the many Veteran’s service organizations and tremendous resources that are available within the Toledo area. “We will be contacting Veteran’s organizations throughout the area and inviting them to participate in the Ride and the Veteran’s Day activities at the Fair,” explained Dennis Clemons, American Legion Post 320 2nd Vice and ride organizer. “Riders will have a chance to visit American Legion Posts, VFW’s, as well as businesses and stops that support local Veterans.”
Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting pre-registration online as part of their Event Listing services powered by ReasonsToRide. com. Riders can register online through multiple sites – including LucasCountyFair.com and ThunderRoadsOhio.com. The first 200 riders to pre-register online will get a FREE Ride T-Shirt – courtesy of the Lucas County Fair and other ride sponsors. You can also find more general information on the day through the Lucas County Fair and Thunder Roads Ohio Facebook pages online. Ride organizers are looking for additional veterans organizations and local businesses that would like participate or possibly help sponsor the Ride and the Veteran’s Day activities at the Fair. For more information, please email either Info@ReasonsToRide.com or Kathy Ingram, with the Lucas County Fair at ingram.k622@ yahoo.com
The Ride uses a unique format that has riders checking in at the American Legion Post #320 in Maumee on Saturday, July 9th during the day. They then have until Wednesday, July 13th to complete the stops and turn in their card. Riders are able to hit the stops as their schedule and possibly the weather allows – at their own pace. “The Ride will end at the Lucas County Fairgrounds, where we will be hosting our annual VETERAN’S DAY. In addition to all of the regular Fair activities, we will have a special area designated for Veteran’s organizations and activities. All riders will receive a meal – and have a chance to participate in raffles and enjoy live music,” explained Kathy Ingram, Lucas County Fair Board Member and Ride Organizer. MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Happy April! What is hopping up today?? We are! We had some great weather in March, windy as usual, but when the thermometer hits warm, we are hitting the road! As I saw many of you out and about, I said a prayer over you for protection and safety. We do that often…whether on two wheels or not. I am hoping that others in cages are praying as well. Makes them more aware of us!
and you probably will see us at your bike blessings in May. May 20-22nd we will be having a blast at our Roads and Trails event; Begley Campground near Logan is the starting point for both road rides and trail bikes. Come and join us! You can’t beat the beautiful countryside of the Windy 9! More to come in June with Ohio Bike Week starting back in full force so I hear! Woohoo!
So, this is the month in which we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Traditionally, this holiday is called Easter, but you may hear it referred to as ‘Resurrection Sunday’ by believers. Why is that? Because Easter leaves the visual of bunnies, eggs, and spring…resurrection reminds us that if it were not for the sacrifice of Jesus allowing Himself to be nailed to the cross for us, taking on the sin of the world, although He was sinless, reminding us of the victory of His raising up from the grave and defeating death. That is the truth of the day.
With that, I will say…May your road before you be clear, may your joys be many, and your sorrows be few!
Let’s be real…there’s nothing wrong with Easter egg hunts, baskets full of goodies and a celebration of spring. That’s just family fun, but if you don’t teach the real reason we celebrate this time of year, then you are missing out on the greatest moment in human history. The beauty of that moment is the fact that it isn’t just in our history, He is still alive in us today! What a wonderful plan God had for all of us and the fact that He made the sacrifice for all mankind throughout eternity gives everyone the opportunity to receive His wondrous grace and love! Grace is unmerited favor. None of us deserve it, but yet He is willing to give it to ALL! You know the movie, ‘The Passion’? If you have never seen it, I suggest you give it a go this year. The reason it’s called ‘The Passion’ is because it was the passion of Jesus to share His love and mercy to the world. He asked the disciples to follow Him so that when He was no longer with us, they could carry on the mission of sharing the good news to the world so that ALL would be saved. That’s right…ALL of us! It doesn’t matter what you have done, where you have been, or what you have seen, what matters is that His passion to love you goes deeper than you or I can even imagine. So, as a disciple of Jesus myself, it is my service to Him to share with you the good news that Jesus is alive and well and is calling you to ‘come, follow Me.’ We have a lot going on in the next few months: May 7th is our Run for the Son Day, many chapters in your area will be out

VETERANS CORNER Preparing for 2022 Riding Season Welcome back, hope you all are doing well, if not, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help. I’m so ready for the riding season, actually I was ready 4 months ago LOL. I want to remind everyone before they go start up their bike that there are a few things you need to remember to do. First off, if you have been storing check for small animals or debris that may have gotten in somewhere they shouldn’t have. If you didn’t treat your fuel with a fuel stabilizer you might want to drain it. Change the oil and check all fluids. Inspect the Battery and check all electrical system. Examine the controls. Clean and lubricate chain, if it is belt driven ensure the belt is adjusted properly. Check brake pads and levers. Check Tires, tread and tire pressure. Inspect the spark plugs, let the engine run for a few minutes and listen for any strange noises. Check for loose bolts such as motor mounts, swingarm, axle, steering head fasteners, wheel balance and suspension. Also check the air pressure in the shocks for a comfortable ride. After performing a quick preventative maintenance on your motorcycle it’s ready to ride, so enjoy your ride and be safe out there.
“Thank you for your Service, how can I help you? That way it gives the civilians a way to find out how they can get help if possible. Also, understand one thing if they do have an episode be understanding and don’t take it personal. They are struggling so hard not to have this episode especially around people they love or know. It’s hard enough for the veteran to be around people at times so try to make them feel comfortable and try to stay away from confrontational situations or issues. If you do find a veteran that needs help don’t hesitate to reach out and provide them with information such as encouraging them to go to the VA for care, or connect them with the Veterans Crisis Line (800) 273-8255 or 211, or reach out to a family member or friend that can help or talk them down. There are so many rumors and myths about veterans and PTSD. After I had an episode around the holidays and how the person dealt with it -even though they were aware of it, not only upset me that it happened, but also upset me that they didn’t handle it in a proper manner. So I’m asking all family and friends to be considerate and understanding and remember one thing don’t take it personally… RIDE SAFE AND ENJOY THE RIDE!!!!
How to Deal with Veteran’s with PTSD What is PTSD? (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, or sexual assault. It’s normal to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after this type of event. It may be hard to do normal daily activities, to include spending time with people they care about. Most people start to feel better after a few weeks or months. If it’s been longer than a few months you may have PTSD. What are some of the symptoms of PTSD? There are four symptoms: reliving the event (nightmares, flashbacks, pr triggers), avoiding situations that remind you of the event, negative changes or feelings, feeling keyed up (hyper arousal). Remember symptoms’ may not be the same for everyone. There are many different treatments for many different people some can get rid of the symptoms altogether, others have fewer symptoms and others never get rid of them, but they learn to deal with it.
SHARON K. HARVEY (RET) TSGT, USA/USAF “RED”
Sponsored by:
This is something I really need to address since so many veterans have PTSD or anxiety issues and there are so many people who have never been around or had to deal with someone with these issues. First and foremost, we are not proud or happy that we have this issue and most of the time we shut ourselves off from people due to it. But if you do have or know a veteran that is dealing with either or both of these please “LISTEN” If your veteran wants to talk about what they saw or experienced, encourage them to do so, but MAINTAIN a non-judgmental attitude as you listen, and be sure to give your full attention. If you want to ask questions keep them unintrusive. Don’t ask if they have killed anyone. Don’t ask them to put it behind them. Don’t snap, even if they snap… go beyond by saying “Thank you for your service”, most of them are going through a lot so they would rather hear 14

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES
APRIL 2022 U PDATE!
We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well. After doing these shows for more than 10 years, its great seeing how many connections and friendships that have developed over the years between folks coming to the shows. There’s a common bond that exists between riders – and there’s even more of a connection between the folks that take the time to restore, customize, or even create their own bikes. People start talking about what they’ve built, what they have at home, and what they rode up to the show. And this year – we are doing even more to help facilitate those discussions and really ensure that everyone has a great time at the show! Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio

VINTAGE & VETERANS DISPLAYS
This year we are teaming up with a number of Ohio county fairs to help incorporate motorcycles into more of their programming. This will include several new BIKE SHOWS as part of county fairs across the state. We are excited at the opportunities this will allow as we showcase unique and classic motorcycles in front of thousands attending county fairs – that in some cases have been going on for more than 150 years! For several of the counties, we will be hosting VINTAGE & VETERANS motorcycle exhibits. In most cases these will be held in either indoor or covered areas and run the duration of the fair. We are inviting anyone with a motorcycle 25 years or older, a military model, or any make or model with a military / patriotic theme to participate. Selected bikes will be sponsored by Thunder Roads Ohio, showcased as part of the exhibit, and then featured as part of the feature bike show on the designated day. Selected exhibitors will receive a wristband / pass for the duration of the fair and a special VINTAGE & VETERAN’S EXHIBITOR bike show shirt at no cost to them. There will be a limited number of spots available for these displays, so we encourage anyone interested in participating to please submit a photo of their bike and information on it to BikeShowInfo@gmail.com. If you are interested in participating in a particular show – or open to dates throughout the series, please indicate that. There is NO COST to exhibitors for participating in these displays.
SHOW PICTURES
We’ve posted over well over 30,000 Bike Show and event pictures on our Facebook page, with most sorted in Albums by the particular shows. If you’re home and feel like reminiscing about warmer days out on the bike, take a few minutes and check them out. You’re welcome to tag and share these as you’d like. We are working with some new partners to offer the ability to easily get these printed and sent to you – with just a few clicks. Hope to have an announcement on that shortly. Currently, however, we do have the means to get you posters – even big vinyl banners for your garage – of any images we have. Our partner, NEO PRO IMAGING ( www.neoproimaging. com ) is able to do some amazing things with pictures – such as metal or acrylic prints suitable for mounting on the wall or professionally displaying. VINTON COUNTY WILD TURKEY FESTIVAL & BIKE SHOW
MAY 5-8 This year we are kicking off the Thunder Roads Bike Show Series and really our riding season with the Wild Turkey Festival in Vinton County. For over 35 years, the Festival has been held at the intersection of US Route 50 and State Route 93 in downtown McCarthur. Inspired by our experiences in Geneva-on-the-Lake over the last 10 years, our thought was that this would be a great way to kick off the season in another small town – but instead of the shores of Lake Erie, this Bike Show and Festival would be set against the rolling hills of Southern Ohio. These hills include Wayne National Forest, Lake Hope State Park and Zaleski State Forest, and of course Hocking Hills – all within a nice ride of the Wild Turkey Festival. While the Wild Turkey Festival isn’t a “Bike Rally” – certainly Bikers and riders of all types have been welcome for years. There’s free nightly entertainment, vendors, and all sorts of festival activities going on. There are vendors (and we are bringing some motorcycle ones as well to our Thunder Zone – email us for information) and cool local shops, restaurants, and taverns to enjoy as well. We’ve also heard rumors of “Moonshiners” coming out of the hills as well – and setting up in town as well… So you just never know what you’re going to find!

And of course there is the riding! Vinton County might be considered Ohio’s last frontier as both the least populated and most forested – with over 80% of the county covered with trees. Thankfully, though, the county is crisscrossed with scenic roads snaking through the rolling hills – making for some of the state’s best riding. And throughout the area are cool stops for riders to discover. THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
Sprinkled throughout the hills there are traces of Vinton County’s past as a booming source of iron ore during the mid 1800’s. During the Civil War – much of the iron used by Union troops was pulled from sandstone and processed at local furnaces before being sent to foundries for remanufacturing. Some of these operations ran 24 hours a day – with timber from the hills keeping the fires burning constantly. However, in the late 1900’s, high grade ore was discovered around Lake Superior and these furnaces were all slowly phased out. However, you can still see remnants of this industry in some of the Vinton county towns and even set back in the forests – which have reclaimed much of the land that was cleared to fire those furnaces.
Of course, if nature’s quiet splendor or historic foundaries set against rolling hills aren’t enough excitement for you – of course, there’s the WILD TURKEY FESTIVAL itself!

We will be posting more information about the festival, bike show, and maybe even a fun, informal ride we are organizing through the hills. You can also visit the Festival and local visitor’s bureau websites as well – for more information, including recommendations for accommodations. Here are a few that we found local to the area. Again, like the page and look for more updates and recommendations. We are also looking to set up some primitive camping options right in town as well – so let us know if you’re interested in that.

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor
Finding Fun Adventure Riding Nearby Last month we discussed how to find nearby twisty roads for day rides. For this month I've been working on a couple of routes that I can use to practice riding my 650 Suzuki V Strom on gravel roads. How do you find gravel roads other than go out looking for them? I started by asking adventure riding friends who provided links to some adventure and gravel road routes. (Facebook is an excellent place to find local and regional adventure riding groups and most of them have a collection of route files you can tap into. Two groups that I belong to are Adventure Riders Ohio and Southern Ohio Adventure Riders.) Although there many gravel roads in Southwest Ohio, Indiana is a different story. The ADVrider.com site has some good resources including a track called South East Indiana Loop, or SEIL for short. The SEIL was created by Chad Christy, of Metamora, Indiana, who has done a LOT of work to create this valuable resource. About ten years ago he was riding hare scrambles and doing other dirt racing events. Some friends encouraged him to put a license plate on one of his dirt bikes so he could ride it on the road. He quickly realized the freedom of being able to go just about anywhere there was a road and it took him in a new direction.

“Should I buy heated grips or heated
Chad began planning routes between his home in Metamora and various historical sites in the area. Once he reached the destination, he would take a different route home, exploring roads that caught his interest on the way. As he began concentrating on more obscure historical sites, they led him to even more interesting back roads. Like me, he favors roads that are in low lying areas, following creeks and rivers. Over the next four years he spent a lot of time studying county maps, looking at satellite images on Google Earth and exploring on his bikes.
Chad began inviting friends to go along with him to help check things out and many of them would call him later, wanting the tracks from rides so they could go back and enjoy them again or share with other friends. Since he saves the GPS tracks from every ride, this was easy to do. After a couple of years Chad looked at his growing collection and thought, "I ought to just go ahead and make a project out of this!" He got some help and consolidated his route library into the SEIL, which is over 1200 miles in length. Of course it's not all

gravel, as it necessarily includes paved roads that connect the gravel sections into a continuous route. Perhaps you are thinking it's crazy to have such a long track, but Chad never intended for people to ride it from beginning to end. Because tracks display as a simple line on the GPS map screen, you can start and end anywhere you wish, riding as little or as much as you want on a given day, in whatever direction strikes your fancy.
The 07 Indiana Gravel South 228 goes South and West of Liberty, Indiana, crossing a bridge over Brookville lake, following a network of farm roads with mixed gravel and pavement, bounded by county road 260 on the North and US 52 on the South. Although shorter than the North route, this route has more elevation changes and much of it is twisty. After lunch and gas in Brookville, there are some fun paved roads along the return route back to Ohio. (Continued P.56)
My two new routes that are based on the SEIL do just thatone is a loop based on the Northernmost part of the SEIL, going as far West as I thought I could reach in a days ride from home. The gravel roads in the North are pretty straight and simple, a perfect starting place for beginners who just want to practice riding gravel. The second route covers an area South of the first one down to around Brookville. It has a lot more twisties, is fun for more experienced riders but doesn't require aggressive tires or special riding skills. Here's a quick summary of the routes: The 06 Indiana Gravel North 264 is a network of farm roads with mixed gravel and pavement, bounded by state route 44 on the South and US 40 on the North.

MOTO CAMPING : The Basics Brendan Farren, ReasonsToRide.com Contributor
You’ve made the decision to start taking your scoot camping. Fantastic! It will add a whole new element of fun and a feeling of self-reliance to any long road trip and can also be a really enjoyable way to just have a weekend away on your motorcycle. If you have never taken your motorcycle camping it may seem a little intimidating. You might be concerned about having the right equipment. Maybe you saw some bike on the highway with gear stacked up twenty feet high and what looked like two hundred bungees and tie downs keeping it all in place. Breathe easy, it doesn’t have to be that involved and it should always be fun. For your first trip, you could load up and ride from Florida and California with plans of camping every night along the way. If you have never done this, though, I would recommend that you take a couple trips that are closer to home to start with. For the sake of simplicity in this article I will assume a basic overnight jaunt a few towns over and not a cross-country endeavor. I am very much a minimalist for trips on my motorcycle. To me - simple is better. I know some of you prefer to have all the comforts of home. While it is entirely up to you what makes it enjoyable, to me a bunch of stuff detracts from the camp experience. When you start looking into gear remember to think small. Space on your motorcycle is at a premium. You will have to decide between what you NEED and what you WANT on a trip. I find most of my gear from the backpacking world. It is compact enough and perfect for motorcycle camping. After all, a sissy bar bag is essentially a backpack for your motorcycle. Let’s begin at the beginning. Distance and duration or the two “D”s as I call them, will be determining factors for the gear you will need and the amount thereof. First and foremost, Is your motorcycle mechanically sound for the trip you are planning? I know it sounds obvious but give your bike a good once over. Check fluids, tires, signals etc. I promise it is much better to take extra time now rather than having the trip end with a flat tire was because you didn’t look to see belts showing. Now you’re hours from home with a flat, your motorcycle loaded with camping gear. Please check your bike before leaving. Brendan Farren, ReasonsToRide.com Contributor

Here is a quick break down of basic gear I think is essential:
It really can be that simple.
•
Rain-gear. This one can’t be over emphasized. Nothing will make you more miserable than being soaked to the core when you get to your spot and still have to set up camp. It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
A few of the creature comfort items that I do bring are items like a change of clothes, my camp coffee pot, an extra couple power cells for my cell phone and maybe an adult beverage or two.
•
Shelter/Tent. There is an abundance of options to choose from in this category, You will have to do some research to figure out your which will fit your budget and needs best. I started with a fifty dollar, two person tent from Gander Mt years ago when I first began and it served me well. I have since upgraded to a Vuz Moto tent and am quite pleased with that. There are even pop-up style trailers specifically to pull behind your motorcycle, the sky is the limit.
•
Sleeping Pad. This is one area I recommend splurging. After a day on the bike a good comfortable sleeping pad is worth it’s weight in gold. I use the Sea to Summit Ultralight Insulated Air. It is pricey, but I get a good night’s sleep every time I use it.
•
Sleeping bag/Pillow. These are definitely personal preference just be certain you bring the right one for the weather you’re planning on being in. I believe its better to have a warmer one than you think you need.
•
Camp chair. Unless you don’t mind sitting on the ground. A simple sleeve chair like you probably already have works fine to begin. As you get more into packing up your motorcycle you may look into smaller micro-chairs for the sake of saving space. I like my Wekapo Air Sofa. It’s compact, comfortable and easy to use, great after a long ride.
•
Fire starter. Matches or a lighter is the simplest way to go and does suffice. However, I have found a product called FireFlame that is compact to carry and completely waterproof it burns for 5 minutes even after being completely submerged, enough to ignite even wet timber piles. You can find it online for about fifteen bucks.
When it comes to securing everything to your motorcycle, there are a ton of companies that make bags and accessories to take gear. With so many different bikes out there, I can’t begin to tell you the best way for you. I ride a Street Glide I have a sissy bar. Using that and my saddle bags I would have no trouble bringing the stuff needed for an overnight stay at any nearby campground. Just be sure once everything is latched down to flick the tie downs and say,”that’s not going anywhere”. All joking aside, do your due diligence in securing your stuff to your motorcycle. There are many groups on social media dedicated to motorcycle camping loaded with people willing to help answer any questions you may have. The more trips you take the clearer it will be to you what you did and didn’t need to bring to make your trip more enjoyable for you.

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Answers to Common Questions about Ohio’s New Permitless Carry Law Senate Bill 215 has been signed into law and will make it legal to carry a concealed handgun without a license in Ohio beginning on June 13, 2022. Generally referred to as “permitless carry” or “constitutional carry,” this legislation will make several important changes to Ohio’s concealed carry laws:
Ohio’s concealed handgun license (CHL) will become optional. If you are currently qualified by law to obtain a CHL and carry concealed, you will be able to carry concealed without a license beginning on June 13, 2022. Other than school zones where federal law still requires a CHL, nothing changes regarding who can carry, what you can carry (a handgun), or where you can carry. The same rights and responsibilities apply whether you have a CHL or not. You will no longer be required to “promptly” inform. Current law says that if you are stopped by a law enforcement officer, you must “promptly” inform that officer if you are carrying a concealed handgun. In addition, you must inform every other officer you encounter. When the new law goes into effect, you will need to inform only when or if the officer asks if you are carrying a handgun. And you are obligated to only inform the first officer who asks. In Ohio, you will no longer be required to carry the CHL. If you choose to obtain a concealed handgun license, you will no longer be required to carry the physical license on your person while carrying a handgun. However, other states may still require you to have your license with you.
THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE
After working to get this new law passed, Buckeye Firearms Association has received a lot of questions about how this law will affect people in their everyday lives. Here are the answers to some of the most common questions. Will Ohio scrap the licensing system? No. The CHL will continue to be available for those who wish to have it. Those who travel outside of Ohio may want to have a valid license to carry legally in other states. The license simply becomes optional for those who carry a concealed handgun in Ohio. Will the CHL application process change in any way? No. The new law does not change anything about the licensing process. The same application, fees, training, and other requirements will remain the same. This is important in order to maintain all the reciprocity agreements with other states.

UPDATE ON BEAR’S VINTAGE METALWORKS Checking in on one of our FAVORITE Ride Stops. Over the year’s one of our favorite stops to recommend to Harley-Davidson owners or simply motorcycl e enthusiasts was undoubtedly BEAR’S VINTAGE METALWORKS in Ravenna, Ohio. This unique shop had something for every Harley owner – and plenty for those that simply had a passion for riding or interest in things from long ago. And it wasn’t just the shop and what they had to offer – but the people that made it such a great stop. Sharon and Bear had a great crew of folks that made everyone feel like an old friend – even if it was your first time there! Sadly, though, the shop closed their doors for most of the Pandemic and then the word spread that Sharon and Bear had sold the business. Then we heard that they simply sold the retail parts business and motorcycle repair aspects of the shop. We decided that we needed to check in and get the scoop, and of course – we want to share this news with our riding community! This update is for anyone that is a friend or customer, as well as all the riders that have visited our store – Bear’s Vintage Metalworks & Museum in Ravenna. Yes, we are still closed. But, the reason is that we are going through a BIG CHANGE. We are transforming our retail parts store into an expanded Motorcycle Museum – with far more bikes and artifacts than we ever had before!
We’ve sold our parts inventory to “Crazy Boar’s Custom Cycle”. These are great folks and represent the next generation of motorcycle retail and repair. This is exactly what we wanted to do – to “pass the torch” onto younger motorcycle enthusiasts. We’re confident that they will continue on our tradition of offering hard to find parts and great service to all of the customers we’ve served over the years.
This sale has now freed us to pursue our goal of dedicating our entire historic building to serving as a museum of motorcycles and related memorabilia. The small museum that we had before has been expanded, with all new displays and one-of-a-kind collections. For years, Bear has been hunting down leads and searching the web for motorcycles and unique artifacts. With the shop closed due to the pandemic, he’s been able to devote even more time to this – and our collection has GROWN. We now have an even more amazing collection of bikes and unique items spanning over 10 decades of riding.
This transformation has taken a lot longer than we had anticipated, but we are hoping to re-open the building as a dedicated motorcycle museum in early summer. Bear and I have planned this change to carry us into our retirement. We plan on giving tours through the new museum and running a small retail shop with t-shirts and other small collectibles in the front. You’ll also see the familiar faces of Jimi, Santa, Joe, and Whisper there!
Please stay tuned to Thunder Roads Magazine and our website / Facebook for updates and news on our re-opening. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone, but Bear’s Vintage Metalworks please be patient with us as we launch this new venture in our CLOSED TEMPORARILY 42nd year in the motorcycle – Stay tuned for updates! business. FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
Old ranch owner John farmed a small ranch in Montana. The Montana Wage and Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his workers and sent an agent out to interview him. ‘I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,’ demanded the agent.
Driving through Southern California, I stopped at a roadside stand that sold fruit, vegetables and crafts. As I went to pay, I noticed the young woman behind the counter was painting a sign. “Why the new sign?” I asked. “My boyfriend didn’t approve of the old one,” she said. When I glanced at what hung above the counter, I understood. It declared: “Local Honey Dates Nuts”
‘Well,’ replied old John, ‘There’s my ranch hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a week plus free room and board. Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night.’ ‘That’s the guy I want to talk to, the half-wit,’ says the agent. ‘That would be me,’ replied old rancher John.

SPORT TOURING (FROM P.27)
Both routes: If you want to practice riding on gravel roads, these are good routes- nothing difficult. Any road bike will work, but it's more fun on a BMW GS, KTM Adventure or Suzuki V Strom of any size. If you'd like to look over and download my two new Indiana gravel road routes, visit the Norms Rides web page at https://norms-rides.flybyweek.com/ I have not had the opportunity to explore the SEIL South of Brookville yet, but Chad says the riding down there is more technical and better suited for dual-sport bikes. Full information and download links for the SEIL can be found at https://www.advrider.com/f/threads/south-east-indianaloop.1480034/

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT (FROM P.35)
I applied for an Ohio CHL and was denied. Can I now carry without a license? No. Nothing changes regarding who can legally carry a concealed handgun. You must still be a “qualifying” adult, meaning you are at least 21 years of age, not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law, not a fugitive from justice, etc. Refer to the concealed carry manual available at the Ohio Attorney General’s website for more complete information: OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/ConcealedCarry Does this change how I carry in my vehicle? No. You will be able to carry a concealed handgun in your car with or without a CHL. You do not have to unload. You do not have to make the handgun visible. You can have loaded handguns and magazines on your person or stored anywhere in your vehicle. Does this change how I transport long guns in my vehicle? No. Carrying concealed, with or without a license, deals with a loaded handgun only. Transporting rifles and shotguns remains the same, meaning you must transport them unloaded, in a closed container, with ammunition in a separate container or closed compartment, in your trunk or in an area not accessible without leaving your vehicle. Can I carry in a bar, courthouse, church, etc.? Per federal law, you will still need a CHL to carry in a school zone in your vehicle. If you leave your vehicle, your handgun must be secured and locked in your vehicle. Otherwise, nothing changes about where you can or cannot carry a concealed handgun. Areas that are currently no-carry zones will remain no-carry zones. Property owners will still be able to post no-gun signs. Can I carry without a license in other states? That depends on the laws of other states. Ohio law applies to Ohio only. When traveling to other states, you will need to abide by the laws of each state you’re in. References include the Traveler’s Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States, a book we sell at BuckeyeFirearms.org, and HandgunLaw.us, a website that provides information on the carry laws of each state. Can non-residents carry concealed without a license? Yes. While the rules for carrying a concealed handgun remain the same with or without a license, there will be no residency requirement when this law goes into effect. Someone who is otherwise a “qualifying” adult may carry with or without a license whether they reside in Ohio or another state. Can you conceal rifles and shotguns now?
While you are there, be sure to give Chad Christy a big Tip of the Helmet for this amazing resource! Remember, check out Norms Rides at https://norms-rides.flybyweek.com/
Surprisingly, someone actually did ask this question. We’re not sure exactly how someone would carry concealed rifles and shotguns other than under a long trench coat. However, the answer is no. Ohio’s concealed carry laws apply to handguns only. What about storing a handgun in your personal vehicle in an employer’s parking lot? The new law does not change your right to carry to and from work and to store your handgun in your personally-owned car or truck on company property. Your rights remain the same with or without a CHL. If you drive a company-owned vehicle, your employer may have different rules about whether or not you can carry or store a handgun in their vehicle. TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?! Scavenger Winner: Sherry Gaj
