FROM THE PUBLISHER “Everytime I start thinkin' the world is all bad, then I start seeing some people out having a good time on motorcycles and it makes me take another look.” —Steve McQueen from the Bruce Brown movie, On Any Sunday. I recently had the chance to attend a showing of the iconic motorcycle movie On Any Sunday as it was being re-released on the 50th Anniversary of it being first shown. Many die-hard enthusiasts consider it the greatest motorcycle movie ever made – featuring legendary racers Malcom Smith, Mert Lawwill, and of course Steve McQueen. And about half-way through the movie, Steve McQueen utters the above quote which really hit home at the moment. I was at the Lorain Palace Theater at a showing hosted by AMA Champion and rocker Billy Morris, with special guest John Penton. There was a great mix of folks at the Theater – including racers and industry reps, biker builders, and folks that just love riding. It was a cold day in late February, but the sun was out and it seemed as though it was a lot warmer than it actually was. Outside our little corner of the world on America’s North Coast – Russia was on day four of its invasion of Ukraine which had displaced our own political drama and vaccination debates on the news. Indeed, for the past few years, it’s seemed as though it’s been one crisis after another. Inside the Palace Theater, though, it was all about racing and motorcycles as the diverse group of folks came together. And even if for just a few hours, the world was a simpler place as we all connected with a common affinity for riding. The riding community is really a unique part of the world – one that truly transcends borders and many of the other barriers that others might impose on us. When we are riding, we are off discovering the world – even if it’s traveling the same road we’ve gone down a thousand times in a car or truck. On a bike it’s a totally different experience as we are more engaged in our surroundings and maybe just a little more vulnerable. We look to fellow riders and even total strangers along the way for help and fellowship as we travel. And if you’re heading off-road – either racing or riding trails – you take this to a whole new level with even more challenges. But on a bike with the wind in your face and the road (or track, or trail) beneath us… it’s ok. It’s all just part of journey and the challenges just enrich the experience – even if we don’t appreciate them at the moment. There are so many life lessons that can be learned on the back of a motorcycle, and that’s why we all enjoy the bond we do as riders. We know the value of brotherhood more than most, and we recognize that a total stranger at the next stop might just be “family” that we haven’t met yet. As we look towards the upcoming riding seasons, I’d really urge everyone to focus on enjoying the ride and living life the way we know we should. We are all Brothers and Sisters on the road, and we understand that we are all in this together. We take the time to help other riders, and we undertake rides and support events which benefit people we don’t know. We believe in the local businesses and people in our community that enrich our lives. Just because it might seem as though the world has lost it’s way – we know that we can make a difference in our own little corner. And the challenges that come along, just make the ride a little more memorable with the help of each other. Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the road! Live Strong! D. A. Smith Publisher

THE IRON COWBOY
Motorcycle Camping
JOIN THE IRON COWBOY / THUNDER ROADS CREW!
One of our main focuses for 2022 is on getting out and exploring our state – and with any luck, that’s going to involve a lot of camping! Follow our Facebook page and upcoming editions of the magazine for articles on motorcycle camping and great spots to hit across Ohio.
Lots of opportunities to help out at events, take pictures, serve as a local ROAD REP, or even work from home helping out ONLINE! This is going to be an exciting year as Thunder Roads Ohio and the Iron Cowboy Crew emerge from a few fairly challenging years – just like everyone else.
We will be featuring A LOT more recommended spots – and we’d welcome your input! If you enjoying heading off on your bike with a sleeping bag and possibly even a tent strapped to the back, we want to hear about your favorite places to stop. Even if you prefer the spots with cabins – that’s cool, we can certainly appreciate that as well. You can email us your spots or just tag us on facebook with your posts. #ReasonsToRide or #ThunderRun
However, we are excited about the upcoming year and everything we have going on! We’ve taken a new approach to events and added over a dozen NEW locations to our calendar – including COUNTY BIKE SHOWS, MORE TATTOO EVENTS, and MORE BIKE NIGHT and RIDE APPEARANCES than ever before! The TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES will be bigger than ever with projected attendance at these events totaling well over 500,000!
If you’re really into motorcycle camping, we are also looking to add a “CAMPING EDITOR” to our team. This is a contributor’s spot – but you can still make some easy money doing what you love (riding and camping) along the way.
By joining with new partners – we’re also hitting the road to more events out of state, including DAYTONA BIKE WEEK, STURGIS, LONE STAR, and major events throughout the MIDWEST!
Email us for more information at Info@ReasonsToRide.com These pics are courtesy Pop’s Place – Camping and Cabins. Located in SE Ohio, they are a short distance from Burr Oak State Park, Tecumseh Trails Off-Road Area, the Wayne National Forest, and the AEP Recreation Area. They are a great stop for riders – offering RV, primitive camping, and a even a few really nice cabins. Check them out at PopsPlaceCamping.com
Online we’ve partnered with ReasonsToRide.com to offer the MOST POWERFUL motorcycle resource on the internet! Through ReasonsToRide.com and now ThunderRoadsOhio.com as well – we can now offer interactive event listings that allow you to view the actual location, map to an event, and even register for the ride or get concert tickets right on our website! And it’s a proven system that processed more than $5 MILLION in ticket sales just last year! It's all REALLY EXCITING STUFF – and it means we are growing, with new needs for folks all across Ohio and even out of state! With our expanded online aspects, there is a lot that you can even do from home! It’s pretty cool and the potential is almost limitless. For Riding Organizations – we have great opportunities to partner with Thunder Roads Ohio in your area. We need with events and getting the word out – in exchange we help promote your group’s events as well. There are also opportunities for groups to raise funds for your organization or designated charities by partnering with TRO and covering the local riding community. In most cases, you don’t really need experience and we aren’t looking for professional sales people. That’s really not what we do. We are looking for RIDERS that can help represent TRO and IRON COWBOY at events and rides all across Ohio – and looking ahead, across the Midwest and at some of the largest motorcycle events in the country. It’s going to be a GREAT YEAR – join the team and LET’S RIDE! To find out more, send an email to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com 8

Thunder Roads Ohio Offers EXPANDED ON-LINE Ride Registration and Ticket Sales Powered by ReasonsToRide.com
ReasonsToRide.com (RtR) and Thunder Roads Ohio is now offering the ability to include RIDER REGISTRATION as part of your online event listings and magazine ads. This allows riders to simply and easily sign up for your event without ever leaving the website – and without having to register on-site the day of the event. Pre-registration allows you to more accurately plan for your event by having a listing of participants already committed and invested in it. Pre-registration also helps protect your ride from cloudy days that might also have people staying home, but will choose to still come out since they are already pre-paid. RtR is also able to offer RIDE SHIRTS and PATCHES as part of the process as well. Shirts are a great way to promote your event and offer more value to those participating. With advance sales and riders indicating what size shirts they need – you’ll also avoid having to invest in unwanted shirts. You’ll have exactly what you need. RtR can also help develop graphics and promotional materials – including posters and cards to professionally represent your ride. This helps with sponsorships and encourages ride participation.
This is a grass-roots, charity ride with 100% of the proceeds going towards the Domestic Violence Project, Inc. – an organization aimed at empowering victims and offering safety, compassion, hope, and healing to victims of domestic violence and their families. The ride is being held in memory of Amber Perkins, who tragically lost her life a week before this past Christmas. The ride will start at Stinger Harley-Davidson in Medina and end at The Dusty Armadillo in Rootstown. It will be a fun ride, approximately 75 miles, with stops along the way. Raffles and festivities await everyone at The Dusty as we come together and raise awareness of this tragic problem that impacts far too many. “You’re NOT alone – and we will NOT be silent.” - Autumn Burnett, Ride Organizer Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting online Ride Registration through ReasonsToRide.com and helping with planning of the event. We encourage you to check out the event on our Facebook page and website. Please share on your pages and tell your friends about it. Even if you’re not able to attend, please consider making a donation. You can do so through the website – www.ARAV.life
PRO TIP: You can add QR codes to your posters and event ads that take riders directly to YOUR unique registration page through Thunder Roads – even on the day of the event! You can also create signs with these QR codes to display on-site the day of the event. For Iron Pony’s RIDE FOR THE RHINOS – event organizers were able to use display stands with the QR codes and easy instructions for riders to register online even on the morning of the ride. This expedited the process incredibly and allowed well over 1,000 participants to easily check-in with half as many volunteers involved.

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Marching into a beautiful Spring! Time is just zipping by and here we are on the edge of Spring! For all of us it means it’s closer to getting out the bikes and blowing the dust off for our first ride of the season. For some of the diehards it’s tuning up and blowing off the salt dust! Brave… very brave!
Also, none of these funds go to the general operation of CMA, that is funded solely by our members through their monthly donations.
This is also the time we in CMA are getting geared up for all the events soon to be shaping up on our calendars and we are looking forward to seeing your shiny faces out and about! It’s just what we do. We have an awesome ride on the 1st Saturday of May that is called Run for the Son. It’s our only fundraiser that we do, and the purpose is to raise money for the outreaches we are part of. We have three ministry team partners: Open Doors Ministry, The Jesus Film Project and Missionary Ventures. Here’s a breakdown of how the funds are used and a little history:
Thanks for taking the time to read the story and we look forward to sharing the road with you!! Join us on April 1st-2nd at the First Baptist Church, Noe Bixby Road, Columbus for our Seasons of Refreshing! First time guests are free! Contact us at graceme.mg@gmail.com for more information!

The Christian Motorcyclists Association was founded in 1975 with the vision of taking the Gospel to bikers and God has been faithfully fulfilling that vision. Today, CMA is in 38 countries with 1,393 chapters chartered in the United States. Somewhere in the United States a CMA member carrying the lifechanging message of reconciliation, touches someone for Christ once every 46 seconds, and leads someone to Christ once every 49 minutes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. CMA’s Run for the Son started as an effort to provide just one motorcycle to a pastor in Guatemala. Today, CMA has been able to extend the open arms of Christ to millions of people around the world, through the fruits of Run for the Son. By partnering with ministries with world reaching potential, we have been able to place the message of hope and salvation in front of millions of people in 194 countries around the world. Since its beginning, Run for the Son has invested $88 million to help spread the Good News of salvation through Christ; resulting in 32.2 million salvations. Some pray, some go, and some send. So, there it is, and when you see us at an event and if you would like to help send out this message of love to the world, just ask and we will gladly let you know how to be a part of this awesome outreach! As you can see by the breakdown, 40% of the monies raised stay right here in the United States for ministry at home.
COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a nondenominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. Enjoy the family atmosphere, make life-long friends, and join an army of people dedicated to changing the world, one heart at a time in the highways and byways. Visit us at www.cmausa.org for more information. Have a message you’d like to share? If you have a message that you’d like to share with riders across Ohio and the Midwest, let us know. TRO welcomes the opportunity to work with established motorcycle ministries. Feel free to share upcoming events with us as well, by emailing information to Events.ThunderRoads@gmail.com

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well. After doing these shows for more than 10 years, its great seeing how many connections and friendships that have developed over the years between folks coming to the shows. There’s a common bond that exists between riders – and there’s even more of a connection between the folks that take the time to restore, customize, or even create their own bikes. People start talking about what they’ve built, what they have at home, and what they rode up to the show. And this year – we are doing even more to help facilitate those discussions and really ensure that everyone has a great time at the show! Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio VINTAGE & VETERANS DISPLAYS This year we are teaming up with a number of Ohio county fairs to help incorporate motorcycles into more of their programming. This will include several new BIKE SHOWS as part of county fairs across the state. We are excited at the opportunities this will allow as we showcase unique and classic motorcycles in front of thousands attending county fairs – that in some cases have been going on for more than 150 years! For several of the counties, we will be hosting VINTAGE & VETERANS motorcycle exhibits. In most cases these will be held in either indoor or covered areas and run the duration of the fair. We are inviting anyone with a motorcycle 25 years or older, a military model, or any make or model with a military / patriotic theme to participate. Selected bikes will be sponsored by Thunder Roads Ohio, showcased as part of the exhibit, and then featured as part of the feature bike show on the designated day. Selected exhibitors will receive a wristband / pass for the duration of the fair and a special VINTAGE & VETERAN’S EXHIBITOR bike show shirt at no cost to them. There will be a limited number of spots available for these displays, so we encourage anyone interested in participating to please submit a photo of their bike and information on it to BikeShowInfo@gmail.com. If you are interested in participating in a particular show – or open to dates throughout the series, please indicate that. There is NO COST to exhibitors for participating in these displays. We’ve posted over well over 30,000 Bike Show and event pictures on our Facebook page, with most sorted in Albums by the particular shows. If you’re home and feel like reminiscing about warmer days out on the bike, take a few minutes and check them out. You’re welcome to tag and share these as you’d like. We are working with some new partners to offer the ability to easily get these printed and sent to you – with just a few clicks. Hope to have an announcement on that shortly. Currently, however, we do have the means to get you posters – even big vinyl banners for your garage – of any images we have. Our partner, NEO PRO IMAGING ( www.neoproimaging.com ) is able to do some amazing things with pictures – such as metal or acrylic prints suitable for mounting on the wall or professionally displaying. Email us for more information BikeShowInfo@gmail.com
We’re able to produce full color vinyl banners of photos of your bike or custom – for less than $2.50 a square foot!* Start Something Old: Vintage Bike Shows After several successful test runs last year, we are looking forward to introducing a series of Vintage Bike Shows to the lineup for 2022. All bikes will be welcome and we will recognize the fan favorites, but bikes will need to be 25 years or older in order to qualify for the BEST OF SHOW and PEOPLE’S CHOICE Awards. We will be doing photo shoots and interviews as well with those exhibiting classic bikes, with hopes to share in upcoming issues of Thunder Roads and nationally through our partners at ReasonsToRide.com We are also exploring options of filming these shows and the interviews, in order to share with those unable to attend. Originally, we had intended for these to be “smaller shows” but it now looks like we will have several larger ones possibly incorporated into county fairs in 22’. The family friendly, interactive nature of these shows make them ideal for county fairs and regional events. Watch for announcements to come soon as we finalize details on these. Already we have several in the works.
Thunder Zone Vendor Areas For the larger weekend shows, we will be adding THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas to our layout. These vendor areas will offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. For more information on vending at these events and to be put on a list for updates, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com Following are just a few that we’ve already locked down, but we have A LOT more in the works! Make sure that you’re following us on Facebook ( www.Facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio) for updates as they are announced. Register ONLINE at ThunderRoadsOhio.com for these Bike SHOWS and more! 15 DIY TIPS to Ready your Motorcycle for Spring Did your heart sink as you watched the snow melt and realized you hadn’t winterized your motorcycle? These DIY motorcycle tips can get your bike ready for spring and get you on the road for a smooth highway cruise. 1. Check for Small Animals and Debris If you haven’t covered your bike thoroughly for the winter, you may be surprised to find that a small animal has taken up residence in your exhaust or air intake system. Examine these areas before starting your bike, and send any critters on their way. 2. Drain the Gas Tank If the gas tank still contains old, untreated fuel, your motorcycle probably won’t start. Drain the fuel tank and examine the fuel. If brown grit comes with the fuel, it’s a sign the inside of your fuel tank has rusted. Flush your fuel tank with acid remover to prevent problems with your fuel system and ensure clean-burning fuel.
7. Check Electrical System
3. Treat Gasoline with Fuel Stabilizer
There’s nothing worse than thinking you have enough gas for a longer ride, and then find out the hard way that your gauge malfunctioned. Examine all gauges, switches, head lights, rear brake lights, the horn, and turn signals before hitting the road.
Even after draining the fuel system, there’s a chance that stale gas and ethanol are left in the gas tank. Stale gas and ethanol can cause engine misfiring or problems beyond simple DIY motorcycle repair. Adding fuel stabilizer to the tank clears any unwanted leftovers, plus helps the fuel system stay healthy.
8. Brighten the Headlights
4. Change the Oil Even though you may have changed the oil and filter before you stored your bike for the winter, experts advise to do so again before your first ride of the new motorcycle season. The oil may have condensation build up from the winter and lack of use. At the very least, check the oil level before riding. 5. Check All Fluids Gasoline is only one motorcycle fluid you should check when reviving your bike in the spring. Check hydraulic and brake fluid levels as well. Make sure any fluids left sitting in the reservoirs over winter didn’t deteriorate. Examine fluid colors and consistencies. Replace fluids that look dirty or different from when new. 6. Inspect Battery If a motorcycle battery was left on your bike over winter, you will need to either charge it or replace it. First, pull it out and charge it overnight. Secondly, if you don’t have a maintenance-free battery, check fluid levels in each cell at this time. Use distilled water to fill the cells that are below the recommended level, not mineral-rich tap water. Distilled water keeps the combination of sulfuric acid and water as it should be without introducing minerals. Once your battery is charged, test it. If it isn’t holding a charge, replace it now, especially if it’s over four years old. Replacing an old battery can prevent unforeseen problems such as being stranded or acid leaks.
THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE
If your bike’s headlight lenses seem foggy, and visibility is limited, it’s time for some polishing. You can buy a headlight cleaner kit for around $20, and clean the headlight yourself. Many motorcycle accidents occur because car and truck drivers claimed to not even see the motorcycle. Prevent unsafe riding by making sure your bike’s lights are at their brightest. 9. Examine the Controls Test your steering, throttle, and clutch to make sure they still work. Examine cables for frays, corrosion, or damage to coverings. Inspect lines and hoses for cracks, cuts, or signs of leaks. Control cables or hoses should not be folded or kinked, and steering should move freely. If this is not the case for your motorcycle, consider bringing your bike to a trusted mechanic to fix issues with controls. 10. Clean and Lubricate Chain (If Bike Doesn’t Have Drive Belt) A dirty chain will inhibit how a bike runs. For this DIY motorcycle fix, buy a wire brush and dip it in degreaser. Slide the brush along the chain until it’s completely free of debris and mud. Then, rinse with fresh degreaser and wipe dry with a rag or sponge. Finish by spraying the sprocket side with lubricant. Also check for slack in the chain and adjust to manufacturer’s specification. 11. Check Brake Pads and Levers Check your brakes before you ride to make sure your first ride of the summer isn’t your only ride of the summer. Brake pads should (Continued P.48)

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor
“Should I buy heated grips or heated
Finding Fun Riding Nearby Looking at the area South of Dayton (there is nothing but flat farmland to the North), there are just scattered twisty roads to the West. Heading South, (going just far enough East to avoid the big urban areas) things get better quickly. The hilly areas on the North side of the Ohio river, all the way from New Richmond to East of Portsmouth provide plenty of twisties to explore.
During regular riding season (which is just around the corner!) Sport Touring Corner will concentrate on multi-day trips and rallies, but most sport touring riders with little vacation time and have to get most of their riding enjoyment from short rides of a day or less, limiting them to a one or two hundred mile radius from home. Even though I'm free to travel during the rally season from April through October, there is still another five months in the offseason that includes some relatively nice days even during Winter for day rides. Ohio has plenty of twisty roads, but they are not evenly distributed across the state. It's pretty easy to see why we like the Marietta, Ohio, in the Southeast corner of the map, which is the home of Motorcycle Sport Touring Association's FlyBy Week, but if you look at the Dayton, Ohio area where I live, those of us who like twisties have to dig a bit to find them nearby. Finding Twisty Roads
I found this info in the maps at https://roadcurvature.com where there are downloadable files for every state and most foreign countries. The files are in KMZ format for Google Earth but require conversion to GPX format for most route planning apps, so I did conversions for Ohio and Indiana and posted them on my new Norms Rides website below. The Curvature GPX files can be downloaded from my web page, imported into Garmin BaseCamp and used as a guide for route planning. If the land around you is relatively flat, country roads are going to be arranged in a boring grid pattern, with 90 degree turns here and there based on property lines. Fortunately, rivers and creeks were there before civilization and follow the contours of the land, meandering even in flat areas.
I changed the color of the twisty roads to blue to contrast BaseCamp's default magenta route color. Now I can create new routes, knowing where the twisty roads are and recognizing easy ways to connect them.
Waterways were often the best way to move people and goods before a network of roads could be built. When roads were built they tended to follow rivers as they were the established paths of commerce. Rural roads tended to follow creeks, as they were a natural path. Bridges to cross them cost money so roads often follow them long distances to points that are easier to cross. Larger rivers are straighter, but they carve valleys with tributaries. Roads that along the tributaries often give you elevation changes along with the curves. 18

Since I have not ridden most of these roads- some might be gravel, not all public and some to not actually go through- they are not recommendations. They are merely roads to explore. When riding them I will mark the good ones with waypoints on the GPS for future reference. Later in BaseCamp I can use that info to change the color of the good roads and delete the bad ones. Some areas of the map have few blue roads. These are flat farming areas with relatively straight roads in a more rectangular

grid pattern. They can be ridden pretty quickly to get to more interesting stuff. In addition to the Curvature files, the new Norms Rides website at https://norms-rides.flybyweek.com/ features my "Favorite Five" local routes with full descriptions, maps and downloadable GPX files. Here's a quick summary: The 01 East Short Ride 95 miles goes to Jamestown, Ohio and down a bit of the Little Miami River valley through Oregonia and Morrow. The 02 Indiana Border & Back Ride 96 miles takes you over to the Indiana border and back, touching Hueston Woods State park.
Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts: Southwest Ohio Breakfast, 9AM, March 19 Village Family Restaurant 144 S. Main St. Waynesville, OH 45068 Central Ohio Breakfast Meet - Sunday April 3. Arrive at 8 am to eat, 9 to ride if weather permits. Portside Cafe 6515 S High St Lockbourne, OH 43137
The 03 Brookville Indiana Ride 206 miles takes you to Brookville, Indiana, where the hills along the Whitewater River valley provide lots of fun roads that can be ridden in different combinations. The 04 Ripley OH Lunch Ride 206-214 miles with lots of fun roads in the hills near the river between New Richmond and Aberdeen. The lunch stop in Ripley at the Dairy Yum Yum is a favorite. The Twisty return route features fantastic Ohio route 763, but if you like hilly winding county roads the Technical return route is the best choice. The 05 Ridge Inn Ohio Lunch Ride 255 miles requires decent weather and an early start. There's a wide variety of twisties and technical roads all the way to Hocking Hills with lunch at the Ridge Inn in Laurelville, Ohio. Us Route 35 from Chillicothe to Xenia is used for the return trip to save time. Check out Norms Rides at https://norms-rides.flybyweek.com/

OHIO BIKE WEEK 2022
The BLOCK PARTY and TEN DAYS of RIDIN’ and ROCKIN’ returns to the NORTH COAST! The Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event – Ohio Bike Week returns to Sandusky on May 27th, and riders will find a rally much more comparable to the pre-COVID festivities that they’ve come to know and love. There will be some clear changes this year – but these are more related to changes within the community than the pandemic. The City of Sandusky has spent a lot to develop the downtown area, so there will be a lot of changes to the layout of the Block Party and the festivities along the water. Out by the dealership, new restaurants and changes in neighboring businesses will force changes there as well. But after two really hampered years, it’s great to see OBW ROARING back into TOWN for some ridin’ rowdiness! The Mad River Harley-Davidson campus will once again host 10 days of vendors and rides from their location off US 250. As we go to print, the ride schedule includes:

In addition, Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting their North Coast Thunder Run with designated stops throughout the area. Riders can win $500 cash just for checking in at some of the favorite Bike Week stops – along with some new ones that come recommended by our readers and Editors. Check in on the Thunder Roads Ohio facebook page and website for more information on the ride and a list of stops. The Harley-Davidson Demo Truck till be set up out at the Mad River Campus – offering the chance to ride new Harley’s throughout the week. This includes the revolutionary PAN AMERICA and the NEW Sportster S – to name just a few! Harley has some really amazing new bikes – and we’re expecting them all to be at Mad River! Mad River H-D will also be a designated HOG (Harley Owner’s Group) Pin Stop – for those factory riders. HOG Members are encouraged to check in and pick up their official RALLY PIN while they are signing up for rides and getting rally info. As we go to print, there are still a lot of open questions in terms of entertainment and the rest of the schedule. The Official Rally website is OhioBikeWeek.com and they post frequent updates to their social media page as well. (www.Facebook.com/OhioBikeWeek) We’d encourage everyone to follow us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and on our website for updates and links for rally information. We will once again be publishing an Official Ohio Bike Week Rally Guide and dedicating the next several issues to the Rally. Stay tuned for updates leading up to these issues. BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Are you a new gun owner or are you considering it? Become familiar with firearms, find training and more
by Chad D. Baus, Buckeye Firearms Association "I'm unfamiliar with guns. I want to change that. Where should I go?" National Rifle Association (NRA) -certified instructors offer a variety of classes focused on the safe handling, operation and storage of firearms and ammunition. A great beginning class is NRA FIRST Steps. Offered for pistol, rifle or shotgun, these three hour courses provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific firearm type for four or fewer students. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students learn the NRA's rules for safe gun handling; the particular firearm model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the firearm; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students also receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/ NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, FIRST Steps Course completion certificate. To find a course near you, go to www. NRAInstructors.org and click on "Find a Course." For a more comprehensive course, the Ohio Concealed Handgun course mandated by state law is designed to offer a beginner all of the basics of safe handling of a handgun, and also provides a solid primer on the laws for transporting a firearm, self-defense laws, etc. Not everyone who takes a concealed handgun course starts out planning to carry a handgun with them daily, or even at all. They simply recognize the class is a great way to gain a good deal of knowledge in a relatively short amount of time. To find an Ohio concealed handgun license course, go to www.BuckeyeFirearms. org, select "CCW" in the menu bar at the top, and click on "Find a CCW Instructor." "I'm considering purchasing a firearm. What should I buy?" The reason so many different firearms are manufactured is because there are so many different applications for them to be used. A firearm that is purchased to use for hunting can vary greatly from one intended for use as a home-defense weapon. Likewise, the type of firearm you choose for your home-defense needs should very necessarily vary depend on two main concerns. First, any firearm you purchase must be one that you can safely operate effectively. A firearm is not going to be useful to you if you are unable to operate it correctly and effectively. To find out what you are comfortable with, classes such as NRA FIRST Steps (mentioned above) can be a big help. Many firearm retailers also offer guns for rent, which can give you an opportunity to try something on, so to speak, before you buy it. (A side note regarding firearm retailers: if a salesperson makes you feel uncomfortable, pressured, silly, or the like, LEAVE! There are great salespeople out there who do what they do because they believe in it, and because they legitimately enjoy teaching people and helping them get the right firearm to fit their needs, as opposed to which one they can make the most on. Keep shopping until you find such a person.) In the case of home-defense, another concern to bear in mind should be the physical characteristics of your home. A person who lives alone in a house in the country has different set of circumstances (and potential threats) to consider than a person who lives with five other people in a multi-level urban apartment 30

complex. While a rifle or shotgun may work well in a rural environment where threats may as easily have four legs as two, a person living in closer quarters with other family members might find a handgun to be more practical. Even after you've chosen the right firearm, the choice of ammunition for your firearm can also vary depending on its intended use. An NRA-certified firearms instructor or competent firearms retailer (again, someone who cares about helping you more than s/he cares about making a sale) can help you make an informed choice. "Why should I consider including a firearm as part of my home/ family protection plans?" The choice to include a firearm as a part of your home protection strategy is, at its core, no different than the choice to have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, wearing your seat belt when driving, or buying life insurance. We aren't planning on having a grease fire, we aren't planning on being involved in a collision, and we hope not to contract a terminal illness. But because we know they can happen, we prepare. The same can be said for carjackings, sexual assaults, home invasions, etc. We don't want ourselves or a loved one to become the victim of an act of violence, but because we know it can happen, we prepare. We either prepare to do nothing, or we prepare to defend ourselves and our loved ones. "I have children in my home. What can I do to prevent an accident?" An important responsibility that comes with firearms owners is to take steps to prevent unauthorized access to your firearm. Just as we take steps to protect little fingers from electrical outlets, or little mouths from household chemicals, it is important to take steps to ensure that firearms are stored in a manner that prevents access to anyone but those with permission. There are a variety of reasonably-priced (less than $100) locking containers with electronic keypads that allow rapid access to those who know the combination, but which prevent access to anyone else. In addition to practicing safe storage, it is equally important to educate children on what to do if they find a gun. Whether or not you are a gun owner, and while you as a parent may take the appropriate steps to guarantee your children can’t gain access to (Continued P.48)

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
Two Irish drunks are walking home after a little too much celebration on St Patrick's Day. As they stumbled up the country road in the dark, Paddy says, "Bejeesus, Mick, we've stumbled into the graveyard and here's the stone of a man lived to the age of 103!" Mick replies, "Glory be, Paddy and was it anybody we knew?" Paddy says, "No, it was someone called 'Miles from Dublin'." A man walked into a bar on St. Patrick's Day and started ordering martini after martini. With each drink, he removed the olives and put them in a jar. When the jar was filled with olives and he'd finished all the drinks, the man started to leave. As he did so, a curious customer asked him, "Excuse me, but what was that all about?" "Nothing really," replied Paddy, "My wife just sent me out for a jar of olives."

15 DIY TIPS for Spring
BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT
(FROM P.17)
(FROM P.30)
be at the very least 1/8 inch thick, preferably more. If brake pads are thinner or broken—replace immediately.
firearms in your home, you have no such ability to control the actions of others, such as the adults at the homes of your kids’ friends. As such, it is extremely important to teach your children what they should do if they find a gun. The NRA's Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program is a highly effective program designed for children Pre-K – 3rd grade. The awardwinning program teaches young people who find a gun to "Stop, Don’t Touch, Leave the Area, Tell an Adult." Program materials are available from the NRA's website - http://www.nrahq.org/safety/eddie/.
Test the position of your brake lever as well to make sure nothing shifted while in storage. Sit on your bike, grasp the handlebar ends, and place your fingers over the brake lever. If the lever touches slightly behind your fingers’ first knuckles from your fingernails and does not engage brakes, you’re in luck. No adjustments are needed. If the brake lever feels far away, use the lever span adjustment knob to move the levers to the correct position for you. 12. Measure Tire Air Pressure Check all tires to make sure the pounds per square inch (PSI) are at the recommended level. It’s natural for tire pressure to decrease during winter, but if your tire pressure is below the recommended level, inflate tires to proper level to ensure safe and smooth riding. Check also for any damage such as cracks, worn tread, punctures, or bulges. If you find damage, replace the offending tire before riding. Allow the engine to run for a few minutes and listen for strange noises. Doing so ensures the motorcycle can stay running. You don’t want to have your engine stall and fail miles from home!
It is also wise to introduce youngsters to the shooting sports when you decide that they are of an appropriate age. What age is appropriate can vary by the maturity of the child, but, for example, both of my boys were shooting BB guns at age 5 and small caliber firearms by age 7. A child who knows that an adult is happy to help them serve their curiosity by allowing them to handle an unloaded firearm in a safe setting, and to teach them to shoot, is much less likely to be tempted to attempt to handle a firearm when they are unsupervised.
14. Inspect the Spark Plugs
Second Amendment Issues
13. Let the Engine Run
Beyond the practical, there is also the political. George Washington once said that "Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples' liberty's teeth."
Check the gaps in the spark plugs for proper spacing. Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s specifications and adjust. Replace worn plugs as needed. 15. Check for Loose Bolts Once you’re sure your motorcycle can stay running, check all bolts on your bike to guarantee everything is tightened properly. Take the bike for a short test ride, and feel for abnormal vibrations. Once you’re back from the ride, check all bolts again to make sure nothing came loose. If all bolts and parts are in place, but you’re feeling a rumbling or unusual vibration, there might be a bigger issue such as: • Motor mounts • Swingarm • Axle • Steering head fasteners • Wheel balance • Suspension These issues can be dangerous and most likely require a visit to a trusted mechanic. They should be fixed before riding.
Becoming a gun owner, and becoming familiar with the ongoing fight to preserve and restore our Second Amendment rights, is an important way to ensure that our descendants have the same protections afforded by the right to bear arms that we enjoy. Patrick Henry once advised that we should "Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined.... The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun." To help guard the public liberty, you need to be informed. Buckeye Firearms Association sends a free e-news letter to tens of thousands of readers each week. As a subscriber, you can stay informed about what your elected representatives are doing and saying about your gun rights, receive urgent alerts about pending firearm legislation, read what anti-gun activists and the media are saying in order to strip you of your Constitutionally protected rights, and be among the first to hear about fundraisers and special events around Ohio that support the pro-gun cause. To subscribe, go to www.buckeyefirearms. org and click on "Subscribe." Chad D. Baus is the Vice Chairman of Buckeye Firearms Association (www. buckeyefirearms.org), and an NRA-certified firearms instructor. He and his wife are the parents of two boys, aged 12 and 10.

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?! Scavenger Hunt: Betsy Morgan
