Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents the week before Christmas. A husband and wife came for counseling after 15 years of marriage. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate, painful tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the 15 years they had been married. She went on and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured over the course of their marriage. Finally, after allowing this to go on for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and, after asking the wife to stand, embraced and kissed her passionately as her husband watched with a raised eyebrow.
The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, 'This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?' The husband thought for a moment and replied, 'Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I golf.'

Another season has begun for the County Tipperary Ryan Youth Orchestra. Music students from schools and colleges from a wide area in counties Tipperary, Limerick and Cork are meeting every Friday evening at 7.30 pm under the baton of Michael John Ryan M.A.,Dip.C.S.M.,Dip.F.A. to rehearse a concert programme that will be performed at seven or possibly eight special events during the season. The first of these performances will take place be in Kilteely, Co. Limerick in November, and in Tipperary in December, followed by Ballincollig, Co. Cork after Christ-
mas and at other venues every month up to and including May next year. Congratulations to Larry Corbett (Thurles Sarsfields) on being named Hurler of the Year at last weekend’s Vodafone GAA All Stars Awards and to Brendan Maher (Borris-Ileigh) on being named Young Hurler of the Year. They both were named on the All Star team as well. BORRISOKANE WIN COUNTY INTERMEDIATE HURLING TITLE Congratulations to Borrisokane on winning the County Intermediate Hurling title when they defeated Gortnahoe Glengoole by 2-13 to 1-12 at Templemore last Sunday. It was Borrisokane’s second title at this grade with their previous victory coming in 1982 when they were captained by one of this year’s selectors, Paul Dooley. Chairman, Barry O’Brien presented the Jacksie Ryan Cup to Borrisokane captain, Graham McMahon.
A course for new referees in the County will take place in Lar na Pairce, Thurles on November 2, 4, 9 and 11. The course will commence at 7.30pm and last for about 2.5 hours each night. We need new referees to ensure we have adequate numbers of officials for all the games played in the County. We would ask all clubs to look seriously at suitable people for refereeing. We have a great track record of good referees in Tipperary and it is our ambition and intention to continue that tradition. Many people are happy to referee challenge games for their local clubs and we would urge them to make the next step, do the course and move up to refereeing official championship and league games. REFEREES TRAINING Physical training sessions for all referees in the county including those planning to attend the new referees course are continuing on Thursdays at Boherlahan GAA grounds at 7.15pm. NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS IN IRISH SPORT AWARDS The National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport 2010 was launched by Minister Mary Hanafin last week. The awards will honour ten individuals who are representative of the 400,000 people who volunteer their time and effort to sport in Ireland each year through their involvement with sports clubs and organisations throughout the country doing a multitude of tasks. The award winners will be selected by a committee and awards will be presented by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport at a ceremony in Farmleigh in early 2011. Every sports organisation is encouraged to nominate as many individuals within their sport as possible and help promote the event. Nominations can be made online at www.volunteersinsport.ie. This is a great opportunity to honour committed individuals within your own sport as well as highlighting the importance of volunteerism to the delivery of sport in Ireland. Motor Industry Apprenticeship SIMI (The Society of the Irish Motor Industry) are seeking applications for the following Apprenticeship positions Motor Mechanic, Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, Vehicle Body Repairer and Agricultural Mechanic. They wish to fill up to approximately 150 apprenticeship positions over the next number of months. An apprentice is a person who works for an employer in their chosen occupation and gains the necessary skills, knowledge and competencies to become a qualified craftsperson. The duration of an apprenticeship is a minimum of 4 years. The apprenticeship system is a modular standards-based system
comprising of 7 alternating phases of training and development four onthe-job and three off-the-job. On successful completion of your apprenticeship, you will receive a FETAC Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft. This qualification is recognised both nationally and internationally. The Boland Children Benefit Fund Fundraising Night in Silvermines The Boland family are from the parish of Silvermines. Both Ray (Dad) and Olive (Mum) grew up in the Silvermines / Nenagh area and decided that their five children Sandra (age 8), Kayleigh (age 6), Aimee (age 5), Aaron (age 4) and little Josh (age 2) would grow up and go to school in the parish of Silvermines. A few years ago Ray developed cancer but battled through it and the treatment, to come out the other side and into remission. Unfortunately the cancer cost him his occupation at the time, and soon after he started to recover his wife Olive developed a severe spinal problem brought on as a result of an occupational injury.

On the 14th of May 2010, Olive Boland at the young age of 37
years, suddenly passed away from what is believed to have been a heart attack, leaving her devoted husband Ray and her five beautiful children behind. Ray is currently doing a fantastic job of raising 5 children all under the age of 9 years on his own. (Can you imagine for a second, how you would cope in that situation) Ray & Olives relatives & friends help wherever and whenever they can, but it is clear that all Ray Boland’s time is now spent rearing, educating and playing with his children. The Boland children have lost their Mammy but are blessed with a wonderful devoted Dad. There is no option for Ray to resume a place in the work-force as
he needs to be with his children through their tender years, and therefore he is now dependant on state benefit. In order to ensure there is funding for the Boland children’s education into the future we have decided to set up a trust fund. We are planning a number of events in the next few months to try fundraise for the trust fund, the first being planned for the 22nd October, a benefit night at Hickeys Bar in Silvermines Village. The standard of skills on show from both teams augers well for the future of both clubs. Afterwards they received refreshments and medals and we would like to thank Burgess for their hospitality. The end of year party for the u 8s will be held in Jump n Gyms next Friday October 22nd from 5 to 7 pm U10s The u 10s finished their season last Friday with a party in Funworld Limerick and a great night was had by all. U14s The season has now come to an end but it was another good year for the u14s reaching two county finals winning one against Moneygall in the B league final. They lost only one competitive match in the whole season which was the championship county final against Thurles after a mammoth struggle. Four of the Girls played on the Tipperary under 14 County team (a thank you to our own Mike Ryan who was involved with the County Coaching team), while others played on the Tipperary primary school teams. The team next year will be strengthened by the fact that over half of this years team are young enough to play u 14 again next year added to our the flow of girls from our County final winning u 12 team. Abuse (Continued from previous issue) These are enormously powerful weapons because the oppressive sense of ongoing threat interferes with the survivor’s ability to move on and enjoy life. The abuser gets enjoyment from them, and it takes courage to cope with them. Survivors should be aware that the abuser has specific goals behind stalking and harassment, and it is important to understand these. They are as follows: ∙ To isolate and discredit the survi vor. You will already have seen that isolation is a basic strategy of abusers. The survivor may already have been isolated, and because the abuser is in contact with other people to a greater extent he/she may have greater credibility. The abuser is more likely to have the loyalty and sympathy of others in the event of a break up. ∙ To be perceived as a victim to gain sympathy. Abusers often express sorrow to the outside world about a breakup and so elicit the support and sympathy of others. ∙ To be perceived as a ‘good guy’, and render ongoing abuse unbelievable. Some abusers are able to turn on the charm for others (while reserving their anger for the survivor). They can portray themselves as affable and kind, and others do not suspect them of being abusers. ∙ To retain and continue to use oppor tunities to punish and control the survivor. The abuser misses the many opportunities he/she had when the relationship was intact to abuse the survivor and release tension. Since abuse is based on power and control the abuser is unwilling to let this power and control go. ∙ To prevent the survivor from mov ing on and developing a new life. The abuser wants the survivor to remain in his control, and any effort to move on, and perhaps develop a new relationship enrages him/her. This is what makes leaving an abuser so dangerous. Stalking destabilises the survivor, leaving him/her exhausted and depressed, and unable to move on. ∙ To enlist others in inflicting punish ment on the survivor. Since the survivor is more than likely isolated, the abuser may be able to get others to condemn him/her. The abuser’s friends may be uncomfortable in the presence
of complaints by the survivor and may shun him/her. This is very likely to happen in the case of the abuser’s family, who may take part in the denial of any abuse. Yet, survivors are not without power when dealing with stalking and harassment. This behaviour should be reported to the gardai, although this is not very effective. After all a person is entitled to attend events in which their children are taking part. Nevertheless, research shows that being confronted by a policeman can deter some abusers. A safety plan involving some of the points made above is also important. Perhaps the most important way to counteract stalking and harassment is not to react. This is easier said than done, but any reaction by the survivor gives the abuser satisfaction. The survivor knows the abuser better than anyone else, and so can devise an appropriate plan to deal with them. Setting physical boundaries as shown above is important, but the survivor should also develop internal boundaries. By this I mean survivors should be aware of the buttons that abusers can push, and should learn to disconnect from them. This requires practise and effort. Changing internal boundaries also means directing energy away from negative thoughts such as bitterness, resentment, anger and vengeance. Otherwise the survivor becomes like the abuser, and nothing gives an abuser more pleasure than to see the survivor gripped by negative, tormenting feelings.
