There were many highlights of the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2016. The school was extremely proud of the 6 awards that we received. John Ryan received the Road Safety Award for his project ‘Arrive Alive’ and also came 4th in his category. Jack O Meara received a special Teagasc award for his project on the ‘Mastitis metre’; he also took third place in his category. Rachel O'Connell and Eimear Darcy received a prize for the best presentation in their category. Their project was the ‘Sun Burnt Horse’ . Tara Mockler, Eimear Slattery and Emily Meagher were fourth in their category and received a highly commended award for their project ’ Equine Colic Detector’.

Other students that participated were Megan Tierney, Gillian O Meara and Niamh O Brien with their project ’Artism’ ; also Nicky Cooney and Anthony Ryan with their project ‘Safe Watch’. The students had many media commitments. They featured in the BT press releases, Irish Examiner, Irish Times, local Tipperary press as well as a live interview with Tipp FM. President Michael D. Higgins praised the great work presented by the students. They received visit's from many guests including T.D’s, the French ambassador and many others. Students have been offered visits and work experience with Intel, IFCO, DCU equine hospital and many others.

Tipperary SMEs encouraged to grow their business with new training fund Skillnets – the national agency responsible for funding and supporting training networks – has announced details of a new training fund worth nearly half a million euro (€450,000), aimed at assisting private sector businesses to grow, by addressing their current and future skills needs. A group of businesses from the same region, or specialising in the same sector, can collectively apply to develop a Skillnets training network, and draw down funding support for the development and delivery of training. Businesses can be of any size, from a sole trader to multi-national, and the fund will also be open to existing industry federations, industry bodies or enterprise groups. Speaking about the training fund Brendan Mc Ginty, Chairman of Skillnets, said: “It is a progressive time for Tipperary enterprise, with an increase in the number of people in employment, as businesses look to expand. Having the appropriate skills, including addressing future skill needs to deal with this expansion, is vital for sustainable development. The success of our open

call for Skillnets training networks last year, which resulted in the establishment of 11 new training networks, indicates the growing demand among businesses for relevant and innovative solutions to address skills shortages in the workplace. Skillnets is pleased to announce another new fund for Skillnets training networks this year, so that more enterprises looking to expand their business can be assisted in skills development.” The total fund available for new networks is €450,000. Skillnets operates under a joint investment model whereby participating training networks can apply to receive up to 50 per cent of the cost of training from Skillnets, and the remainder of costs are funded in cash contributions from participating businesses in the training network. The first closing date for the new funding call is 15th March, with a second closing date in November 2016. Skillnets already supports 63 training networks in a wide range of sectors from manufacturing to information technology and food /

beverage and mixed sectoral training networks across many regions. One of the networks set up from last year’s funding is Aviation & Aerospace Skillnet, which provides training to the aviation and aerospace sector. Part 21 Design Ireland, based in Ireland’s aviation hub in Shannon, is a member of the network. Mick Malone, Head of Airworthiness at Part 21 Design Ireland said: “Ireland is one of the leading players in the international aviation industry and in order to keep our competitive edge in a global marketplace, our staff need to be continually up-skilled to meet these demands. Courses offered by the Aviation & Aerospace Skillnet form an essential part of our ongoing staff training. This type of relevant, practical training is invaluable as it ensures our staff are up-skilled in areas critical to our business.” According to Brendan McGinty: “A key element of the Government’s growth and employment strategy is ensuring Ireland has the quality and quantity of skills to attract, retain and grow job opportunities and in-

vestment. The collaborative nature of training networks enables members to be more responsive to changing market needs, working together to identify and meet future skills requirements in their industry, so their business stays ahead of the curve. Investing in the skills of existing staff can result in immediate costsavings and significantly add value to the business, leading to such advantages as improved productivity and increased profits. Employers can also enjoy additional benefits of staff loyalty and commitment, which can help achieve greater employee retention levels in an increasingly competitive jobs market. Maths challenge for Tipperary students returns with €20,000 prize fund for students and schools The eagerly anticipated All-Ireland maths challenge that has taken Ireland by storm for the past two years is back, with a prize fund of €20,000 for students and schools. Registration for students and teachers throughout Tipperary is now open for LearnStorm Ireland. Originally called MATHletes, the challenge was started in 2014 by technology entrepreneur Sean O’Sullivan and Khan Academy, a not-for-profit on a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The goal was to increase students’ competence and confidence in maths, and to date, 326 students in Tipperary have participated. Nationally over 13,000 primary and secondary students have completed more than 4 million minutes of learning maths skills. The success of the Irish challenge inspired Khan Academy to take the challenge to the USA as LearnStorm in 2015. MATHletes is returning in 2016 with a new name: LearnStorm Ireland. Starting in January, students in Tipperary can earn recognition for themselves and their schools by mastering maths skills on Khan Academy. At the same time, they’ll build confidence to help them learn anything. LearnStorm is free, fun and accessible from anywhere. Powered by Khan Academy, LearnStorm is coming to Ireland

with help from The O'Sullivan Foundation and is being delivered locally by Camara Ireland. James Tynan from Khan Academy, said “LearnStorm helps students not only to get excited about maths, but to cultivate higher order skills about learning that will permeate other life challenges, too. We know that the more you grapple with something, the more your capacity expands. LearnStorm is for everyone as it rewards students for hard work and mastery, no matter if they’re learning basic arithmetic or advanced calculus.” John Fitzsimons, CEO of Camara Education, said, “We are really excited that signups are now open for this free maths challenge for Ireland. This is precisely the type of innovative education that ICT can facilitate both inside and outside the classroom." Well done and Congratulations to local girl Chloe Carroll , on her recent cross country achievements.Chloes participation, determination, and in particular her love of running is something she and her family are so proud of .Chloe has represented herself, her school Scoil Naomh Cualan,Borrisoleigh, Templemore A.C, and her county. In January 2015, Chloe was part of the Tipperary Under 10 relay team who won Silver medals in the Munsters . In October 2015 , in schools cross country Chloe brought home an individual gold medal and a bronze team medal for Scoil Naomh Cualan, Borrisoleigh .Chloe then went onto to take part in theunder 11's County Cross country running her longest distance to date at 1500metres and came in 8th winning a bronze

In November Chloe ran in the Munster Cross country, in Beaufort Co. Kerry under horrendous weather conditions ran a great race, coming 69th overall and came in 7th for Tipperary qualifying her to go onto the Nationals in Waterford, which for a beginner was great. Munster B's was the next day, Chloe ran a fantastic race in Cappawhite and came 3rd winning an individual bronze medal and also a bronze team medal. On December 6th, Chloe ran in the Nationals in Waterford, coming in 84th overall, and came in 3rd for Tipperary, her best race to date seeing her make a huge improvement from the start of the season.Chloes last run for this cross

country season will see her represent Tipperary in the National B's in January 2016

Before we spend millions of euros on downstream knee jerk hard engineering false solutions, especially before we make any decision to go dredging rivers, which will only send the problem further downstream as many other EU countries have discovered at great cost. Those countries who adopted dredging strategies are now reversing their ill judged decisions. We also face the very real prospect of heavy EU fines and penalties which could add

further to the cost of short term quick fixes. Andrew St Ledger, the League PRO says " We can all agree there is a need now to find wise long term solutions to fix flooding, one part of this solution is to work with nature, farmers, and local communities to restore our degraded uplands, rivers, streams, wetlands and flood plains so that they can perform their natural regulatory function to their optimum capacity ". There is an urgency now to pay heed to recent UK scientific research in comparable upland situations to Ireland. The UK Pontbren project, conducted by Bangor university in Wales found that water was absorbed 67 times faster by native woodland than on grass. Anxiety Social Anxiety - Blushing As mentioned, social anxiety can be especially severe at the thought of meeting strangers, and sufferers may feel extremely self-conscious. This is an extreme and crippling form of shyness (I must say I like shyness in the normal sense of the word. It is a lovely characteristic). You may have heard it said that man is the only animal who blushes, and extreme shyness is at the core of social phobia. Blushing is an automatic response to feeling under the spotlight. Some become so embarrassed by the blushing that it restricts their social life and their ability to relate to others. I have read the stories of over 700 people who are tormented by blushing, and it is sad that it inhibits their life to such an extent. Blushing is a physical response showing embarrassment, or even shame, and comes from a rush of adrenaline, the hormone that gets us ready for flight or fight when we are in danger. Part of the effects of adrenaline is to allow the veins to widen, to help in the flight or fight reaction. This is what happens to your face when you blush, and possibly flush (sweat). The veins widen, and your face reddens as a result. So, there seems to be sensitisation coming from a fear of danger. The sufferer experiences high anxiety and becomes over-nervous. I imagine the roots of this may lie in childhood (if there is not an underlying medical cause). There is a phobia about blushing called erythrophobia. If you wish to learn more about erythrophobia you might like to read a very interesting article called Patients With Erythrophobia (Fear of Blushing) Show Abnormal Autonomic Regulation in Mental Stress Conditions by Kurt Laederach-Hofmann and his colleagues. There are several other medical explanations for blushing, and there is some controversy about the effectiveness and side effects of surgical interventions to prevent it. The principal intervention is Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS). You can investigate this on the internet for side effects. There are many other suggestions for alleviating blushing, but I do not know how effective they are. Some doctors recommend cutting down on coffee, drinking plenty of water, drinking alcohol slowly, refraining from eating spicy food or high carb food. Other sufferers found that using a high factor sun cream and giving up dairy products helped. Some, but not all, have been helped by EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). Many sufferers find Dermacolour very effective in concealing blushing. No doubt, your pharmacist probably stocks this product. There is also a product called Dermablend. I must admit that drinking red wine makes me flush. I also find that being in a warm room makes my face red. I feel that stress and rushing affects me and makes me blush. I noticed this in particular on the night my book on the death of my youngest child was launched in Dublin. It was an extremely stressful situation, and looking at photographs later, I noticed how red my face was. However, this is only an occasional problem for me and does not bother me at all. So why is it that if I am beetroot red I am not bothered, while others feel so restricted that they avoid going to celebrations and functions. I am convinced that looking at how we think is a good way to go about easing the fear of blushing or blushing itself. I always say ‘so what. My face is red. What about it’. In other words, I minimise the fear and the complaint. Catastrophising increases our sensitivity and makes the matter worse. However, as I have already said, it takes up to a year of practising changing our negative thoughts before a change takes place. Some sufferers find that meditation helps; it increases powers of concentration, and helps to divert their thinking from their problem.
