Tipperary G.A.A. Yearbook The Tipperary G.A.A. Yearbook 2016 is now available in the bookshops and usual outlets. Published annually since 1970 it is an outstanding record of the achievements of club and county in all aspects of the G.A.A. Whereas the main focus of people’s interests may be on hurling and football, camogie and ladies football, the book also tells the complete story of achievements in Scór, handball, Bord na nÓg and other areas of G.A.A. Activities.

It is a huge compendium of information that strives to be the complete reference work on the G.A.A. in the county. For instance the section, County Teams 2015, by John Smith includes the lineout of every team that represented the county in all grades of hurling and football during 2015. There is a great reference section for all the results in the Scoreboard 2015 section by Ed Donnelly.

One of the most read sections of the book is, Friends We Lost, obituary notices of the many Gaels who passed away during the past year. And they were many. They include Tony Reddin, Jimmy Doyle, Tomás Ó Baróid, Ray Reidy, Dom Browne, Tom ‘Senator’ Murphy and Jackie Griffin, to name just a few.

The Yearbook always carries a number of feature articles and Seamus Leahy is always a regular in this field. He doesn’t disappoint this year with his account of the 1916 All-Ireland, won by a Boherlahan Selection in January 1917.

International Makeup Artist visits Templemore College A High Fashion Media Makeup workshop was recently facilitated in Templemore College by internationally renowned Makeup Artist ‘Catherine Biggs’. Makeup Artistry students and Beauty Therapy students were shown how to create a dramatic ‘high fashion’ makeup look using industry standard makeup brands and professional techniques.

The workshop took several hours and also involved the students carrying out their own looks afterwards. Catherine explained what it is like to work in the industry of Makeup Artistry in particular in the film industry.

She is currently second in command on ‘Vikings’ and has worked on this production for the past three years.

She has also worked on international movies such as ‘The Great Gatsby’, ‘Australia’, ‘Mad Max 4 – Fury Road’, and television series ‘Home and Away’, ‘All Saints’, ‘XPose’ to name but a few. This gave the students a great insight into the real world of work.

Templemore College of Further Education is the leading provider of PLC courses in Tipperary and acknowledges the need for programmes that focus on providing courses that meet the needs of industry. The Makeup Artistry course at Templemore College is in its first year and so far is proving to be very popular. Students will achieve a QQI Award at Level 5 in Makeup Artistry. This qualifies

students to work as Makeup Artists or ‘MUA’s’. Course tutor Nicola Welford says that ‘this course has come at the right time….makeup artistry is growing quickly as an industry in this country and internationally….peoples interest in makeup and techniques is huge’. Students study basic and advanced makeup techniques, high fashion media makeup, bridal makeup, everyday makeup, makeup for television for men and women, barbering, henna tattoos. The course also offers special effects makeup involving the production of bald caps, silicone prosthetics for scars and wounds. The Period and Theatrical Makeup module focuses on makeup through the ages and includes fantasy and character makeup for television and theatre. In addition to these Waxing, Manicure and Pedicure are other skills that the students learn and ‘Postiche’ which involves the making of facial hair pieces studying wig making techniques. It is definitely a very varied programme but tailored to suit industries current requirements. Employment opportunities are very good for students who have completed a course such as this at Templemore College.

Templemore Parade to Celebrate 40th Anniversary Templemore St Patricks Day Parade will achieve a unique distinction next March when it celebrates its 40th Anniversary and continues as the oldest active parade in County Tipperary.

Since it was reactivated all those years ago, the parade has developed into one of the most successful and well attended in the entire county and region.

Large crowds flock to the town and with numerous on street attractions, all age groups are well catered for. Coupled with the various groups and floats taking part in the parade, a most enjoyable family day is assured. And in recent years a more international aspect has been added by our twin towns of Prémilhat (FR) and Potenza Picena (IT) attendance, in the parade.

To add to the festivities, the Parade committee have developed a festival around our patron saint’s day. The Blessing of the Shamrock ceremony on the night prior to our National Day launches a festival of music dance and culture which is enjoyed by local and visitor alike.

Needless to say much preparation takes place to ensure the success of the parade and several meetings of the committee have already taken place.

Each and every aspect of the workings of the event are revisited in an effort to improve upon the success of the previous year’s event. These meetings will continue over the coming months as we plan ahead to celebrate an historic anniversary.

Theme The theme of this year’s parade is considered most appropriate as we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. Therefore we are asking all participants to adopt both the Dress and Events of the 1916 Rising as their theme for floats and entries. Even those attending on the day or events associated with our 40th Parade are encouraged to “dress up” for the occasion.

Prize Money Once again a prize fund of €2000 will encourage a large turnout and we hope for a very positive response for what promises to be the biggest and best parade in the county. Further updates will be provided later as we near the big event.

‘Catastrophising’. Irrational thinking.

Rumination.

If you suffer from social phobia/anxiety, you are assuming that others will think in a negative way about you. Do you really think that you can read the minds of others!!! Do you really think that you can foretell the future!!! Perhaps you have a negative view of yourself.

Perhaps you are a perfectionist. Perhaps you have been shamed as a child by someone at home, among your friends or in school. Are you always catastrophising? Aaron Beck, one of the leading theorists on negative thinking uses this word as a way of explaining how some people always have the worst possible outlook on everything, blowing everything out of proportion.

They might say something like this – ‘If I am seen as being stupid (boring, dull, uninteresting, nervous, etc.) it will be a catastrophe. It will be the end of the world. It will be disastrous’. When you write it down like this, hopefully you will see how ridiculous such negative thinking is. It is totally divorced from reality. Is it really true that you have to be the centre of attention, the most interesting in a group, the one who has to speak? Do you really believe that you are so interesting that everybody is looking at you? Instead of focusing on yourself and how you might be seen in a group, divert your attention from yourself and onto others. People prefer others to listen to them. So practise being a good listener, rather than tormenting yourself to take part.

I am convinced that all the foregoing comes from how social phobics project their own negative thoughts and their own negative self-view onto others. In other words, they imagine that others share their negativity, and have a negative opinion of them. They, therefore, have a strong sense of being judged, and the intensity of such feeling can incapacitate a person. They have a strong sense of inferiority because they do not feel that they are socially desirable or socially attractive (being socially attractive means that others enjoy one’s company, and so on), and tend to indulge in continuous rumination.

They carry out what has been called a post mortem review, in which they analyse in a negative way how they have responded to conversation, judge themselves as having been uninteresting, and perhaps agonised at how others looked at them. They imagine that others have seen the internal vulnerable child in them that is in terror of rejection. In other words, they have a very negative self-appraisal of their social performance.

They have an equally negative view of how others appraise them. This toxic thinking only strengthens the sufferer’s sense of inadequacy, and reinforces the

fear of social situations. Unfortunately, those who suffer social anxiety constantly require reassurance, and create frustration in others. Their behaviour frustrates their objective of being accepted.

Rumination is greatly increased in those who have a mixture of anxiety and depression following interaction with strangers. Those with major depression are more vulnerable to anxiety. It seems to be increased also by the nature of what the sufferer says in such social situations. There seems to be less rumination when conversation is confined to small talk, but more rumination if the anxious persons make disclosures about themselves. The sufferers are, therefore, inclined to examine what they have said, and whether these have portrayed them as being socially desirable (i.e. as being intelligent, witty, and so on).

I mentioned in my articles on depression that women are more likely to ruminate than men, and thus are more prone to anxiety. Men tend to ruminate about situations involving anger, and they consequently build up grudges, but not anxiety. Women on the other hand, are more involved with relationships of all types. They are more relationship oriented than men, and so there is more scope for rumination about social interaction and how they are faring. They tend to be more aware of the quality of their involvement and interaction in relationships. Anxious women question this quality in a negative way, and tend to analyse how they might be better in communication and in being interesting.

This leads them on a merry-go-round of self-criticism.
