BlackBerry Hearing, was established to address the shockingly high price of hearing aids. Blackberry Hearing, an Irish company, is making quality hearing aids much more affordable and is adding numerous clinics across the country as demand increases. The company offers its customers the option of a free hearing test at home or a free hearing test in a clinic held in a partner pharmacy. Michael Ormonde, a recent customer from Newbridge, had this to say: “I would highly recommend Blackberry Hearing from a service point of view. They managed everything and responded quickly all the time. The first thing I noticed, however, was the price. I was amazed at the price and having worn the hearing aid for some time the quality is even better than (the much more expensive) hearing aids I’ve had before.” Meanwhile, a local woman, Kathleen Murray, added:“I’d never had hearing aids before. We were recently away in Liverpool and I could join in on every conversation. It wasn’t until we came away I realised the impact of what had just happened.” For more customer reaction visit www.blackberryhearing. com. ‘Buen Camino’ Walking the Camino with Kavanagh Travel Written by Fr Oliver Maher Pilgrim walks are very much part of the five main religions of the world. For Christians one of the most popular is known simply as the ‘Camino’, or ‘The Way of St James’. There are several routes that can be followed, The French Way, beginning in St Jean Pied de Port, in the Pyrenees, the Portugese Way, The Camino del Norte, all of which finish in Santiago de Compostella, in the beautiful region of Galicia, in NorthWest Spain. The ‘camino’ has become incredibly popular in recent times, with literally thousands of people setting out from all parts of the world to complete their own personal ‘camino’. During lunch about a year ago with Tommy Kavanagh and Fr. Paudie Moloughney, Paudie was telling us about his ‘camino’ which he undertook, walking all the way from Two-Mile-Borris in Co Tipperary, down to the Pyranees (apart from the ferry crossing from Ireland to France) before taking on the full 800km of the ‘French Way’. At the end of the conversation he was encouraging Tommy and I to organise a trip. So, after much research, and a fact finding mission to Santiago in January 2014 we put together an itinerary that we felt would appeal to people. Under the auspices of Kavanagh Travel here in Urlingford we advertised and within a very short few weeks we had signed up 53 pilgrims and set a date for October 2014. People travelled from as far away as New York, London, Porterglenone in Co Antrim, and other parts of Ireland to make up our group. Sadly, Paudie became ill and could not travel with us but we carried him in our hearts and prayers as we travelled. We all met for the first time at the airport in Santiago. Having received our ”credencial del Peregrino”(the pilgrims passport we would have stamped on our walk verifying that we had actually completed the trip) we were bussed to our hotels in the town of Sarria, our starting point on this trip. We would be walking 120km over the next six days!! As you drive the route from the airport to Sarria you are immediately struck by the number of people walking!
Day One Having had breakfast at 7am this morning we gathered outside the Hotel Oca Villa in the centre of town and set off. 22km ahead! No one in the group had ever done the camino before so we had no idea what was in front of us. We set off for our destination, Portomarin. It was a truly beautiful morning. From a physical point of view the walk was straight forward enough. We had a couple of climbs starting off but once the terrain levelled out we were walking through beautiful countryside, as green as anything you would see in Ireland. In fact parts of it were like being in the countryside at home in the 50’s and 60’s. Almost every house had its own ‘allotment’ where vegetables were grown, chickens, pigs and cattle were reared. After about 10km I stopped for a coffee and a smoke! recharged the batteries and headed off again. Coming in to Portomarin we headed for the main square of the town and found ourselves a restaurant where we satisfied our thirst and had our first taste of Galician cuisine, ‘caldo Gallego’, Galician soup made with cabbage and beans, delicious... when everyone had returned and were fed and rested our bus took us back to Sarria and our respective hotels. It was siesta time before gathering for dinner and an early night.
Day Two Having breakfasted at 7am again we got on the coach that took us to our starting point for today’s walk, the town square in Portomarin, where we had finished yesterday. Today’s walk would be a challenge in that we would be covering 25km taking us to Palas de Rei. Leaving Portomarin a fine mist started to fall which became persistent rain. We had a long climb of about 9km, during which the lungs and heart were tested, and passed with flying colours!!!!! Fairly well soaked we stopped off at a roadside cafe for more sustenance,
before heading off again completing the climb after another 5km. Our support vehicle, manned by Tommy Kavanagh, Billy Gleeson, Sean Power and Mick Murray met us halfway, with water and fruit and plenty of laughs to boost us up for the rest of the walk. It wasn’t long before we were on the final push to Palas de Rei and a welcome cold beer or two and lunch!! Everyone was taken by the friendliness of the locals and fellow pilgrims alike. As our group arrived in dribs and drabs everyone was telling stories about those they had met along the way, and it became obvious that our group were gelling together, people readily making friends and ultimately looking out for each other and caring for each other. At the end of a long walk we were delighted to return to base for siesta followed by Mass and dinner.
Day Three We had breakfast slightly later this morning and set off by coach once again to Palas de Rei to begin our walk to Melide, a doddle at 17km!!! Again we were walking through beautiful countryside in magnificent sunshine. It was truly a joy to have to worry about nothing except our walk today, no phones ringing, plenty of opportunity to have time to yourself, to think, to pray and to wonder. After one stop for the usual c&c we pushed on to Melide. This is the point where the Camino Primitivo, which starts in Oviedo, meets the Camino Frances. Arriving in Melide we made for one of the many ‘Pulperia’, restaurants which specialise in Pulpo Galego, or Galician Octupus, a delicacy and well worth trying, if you like seafood. Again when everyone was ready we headed back to Sarria for our final night there.
Day Four We checked out of our hotel this morning and packing our luggage onto the bus we headed for Melide to begin the days walk. Another beautiful morning. Today we walked through the villages of Boente, Castandeda and Ribadiso all picturesque in their own way before arriving in Arzua. The town of Arzua is the centre of a major cheese producing region with its own certificate of origin, ARZUA Ulloa. It is a simple soft cheese made from cows milk known as ‘queixo tetilla ‘, delicious!! We have been truly blessed with beautiful weather that we are told is ten degrees warmer than usual. Having finished our walk we again met our faithful Spanish driver, Marcellino, who ferried us on to Santiago to our second hotel, the Los Abetos. The hotel is located about 4km from Santiago centre and is in a fabulous location overlooking the city.
Day Six It was hard to believe that we had already arrived at our last full day of walking, only 16km would bring us to Monte de Gozo. The girls who’d overshot the runway started 4km ahead of the rest of us. We set out in darkness. But as the dawn started to break we were witnesses to the most beautiful sunrise over fog- covered valleys. This morning I met a couple from Denver who loved my Irish brogue and the luminous lime green ‘Kavanagh Travel’ hat I was wearing. I gave them the hat and was glad to move on. I caught up with the three sisters (The Dollard’s) after about 10km and after a coffee and chat we all moved on together. There was definitely an air of excitement as we approached Lavacolla (meaning to wash your collar or neck. It was traditional here to remove ones clothes and wash in the river before moving on to the Cathedral in the days before hostels and hotels). We arrived at the monument at Monte de Gozo (the Hill of Joy) at about 11.30am, which got its name for the fact that this was the first sighting of the Cathedral that pilgrims would have had. Sadly because of modern developments that is no longer the case. It was also here that our two previous Popes, John Paul II and BenedictXVI celebrated mass when they had visited. There was a definite sense of achievement felt by everyone today. As people returned they were driven back to the hotel, 3km away or headed off for lunch. Dinner in our hotel was served each night at 8.30pm. the food was always excellent as was the wine that accompanied it. following on from dinner we had a great sing-song each night and as the week unfolded we discovered new taltent among the group. Most memorable for me were Liam O’ Glassain (Billy Gleeson) in Seanachai mode; and a lady fro west Cork who sang a wonderful song called ‘A seaside resort we called Bray’. I have to say they both had us in floods of laughter each night.
Day Seven We leave Monte de Gozo this morning early and head for the Cathedral. There is a pilgrims Mass each day at 12noon. Having arrived at the cathedral we set off to find the Officina Peregrino where we get our certificate on production of your stamped passport. We gather in the cathedral for mass, the place is overflowing with pilgrims, faith and emotion palpable in the air. At the end of Mass a group of six mewn assemble in the sanctuary and having primed the ‘Botafumero’ (think giant thurible!!!) they begin to swing it, reaching almost to the roof at each side.
Day Five Day Eight Breakfast this morning was again at 7am and we were ready to roll at 8am. Today’s walk from Arzua to O Pedrouza is 20km – another tester!! Another beautiful day as we wend our way westwards towards Santiago. What was very noticeable today was the number of pilgrims on the road. I fell in with a couple from Japan who were on day 27 of their pilgrimage, having started in St Jean Pied de Port. I greatly admired these gentle people who were carrying their possessions on their backs, covering at least 28km per day and staying in hostels each night. Our arrival point in O Pedrouza is about 1km short of the town and I nearly missed it only for others showing me the way. But i wasn’t the only one. It turned out that three of our group were so engrossed in their walk that they overshot the runway by about 4km!!! So a little shorter walk for them tomorrow. I should mention too that one of our group, Treassa, was covering the distances on a bicycle she had hired when we arrived in Spain. This brave lady set off on her own each day and made her own way to each meeting point – getting lots of help along the way – getting lost, briefly, in the woods, but ultimately enjoying it all as part and parcel of her own journey.
Our final day takes us out to Fisterre (Finistere) ‘the end of the World’. Roughly ten percent of those who complete the pilgrimage continue on for another 80km to reach this truly magnificent coastline. We stop on the way out and back for coffee, lunch and photo opportunities. Looking around the group today all I could see were contented and satisfied faces. We were all returning to our own worlds, worries, families and lives very much the better for having spent this time alone and together, listening and sharing, walking, singing and caring in a way that is unique to the ‘Camino’. What made this trip for me was the friendships that were forged and ‘the nothing was too much trouble’ attitude of everyone especially Tommy Kavanagh, Billy Gleeson, Sean Power and Mick Murray, our support team! A final thought. If you have ever considered walking all, or part of this journey, as we did. Don’t procrastinate. It is a fabulous experience and it has its own effect on everyone!! Buen Camino! Keep an eye out on the ‘kavanaghtravel.com’ website for our next trip!!

Pilgrim’s Post There’s a milestone just ahead, pilgrim travellers take a rest. Drop the baggage from your backs onto the ground. Take stock of all you’ve got, for you may not need the lot, As we travel a simple journey homeward bound. The pathways high and low, marked out so long ago, By the Master, waiting at the journey’s end. Meander through our lives, high hopes and lonely strifes, with a milestone here and there to cheer us on.
So, take a rest- stay a while, celebrate your every mile. Know heaven blesses wise the pilgrim’s way. Close your eyes to fear and foe, and deep within your soul, You’ll see scallop shells announce the Camino Way.
When solace soothes your soul, from the rigours of the road, View the landscape that you have crossed and climbed. Down the centuries He’ll impart His words into your heart, Don’t give up, I’ll help you carry on. Though maybe daunted by the heights, and the road going out of sight, We’ll strike forth with eyes set on our goal. Refreshed we’ll make a start, with true song to light our hearts, Along the Camino Way that’s homeward bound.
So, take a rest - stay a while, celebrate your every mile, Know heaven blesses wise the pilgrim’s way. Close your eyes to fear and foe, and deep within your soul, You’ll see scallop shells announce the Camino Way. (Written and recited by Mary Tobin, Killaghy on the Camino)

Airline Industry Training at Templemore College Anyone wishing to train for the increasing number of jobs now available with the international airline industry can do so in Co Tipperary as Templemore College, is now offering a one-year course designed to meet the expanding needs of the tourism and travel industries. According to Thurles woman, Mary Davy, who is coordinator of the new Business with Tourism course, “there is now a vastly increased demand for cabin crew for international airlines, since the present strong growth of aviation means almost all major airlines are recruiting.” According to Ms Davy, “a broad introduction to the working of the airline industry will be provided as part of the new course along with interview preparation for those seeking a career as cabin crew. Language skills are also important for cabin crew and there is an opportunity to improve these on an all-expenses-paid work placement abroad in a European country.” For those wishing to work within the local tourism industry, heritage is the word on everybody’s lips since the success of the 1916 commemorations with a new history and heritage brand titled Ireland’s Ancient East having been developed with County Tipper-
ary included. Portroe woman, Jane Quinlan, who is Head of the College Business Department, believes that intriguing the culturally curious is the major task for Irish tourism and this involves bringing alive Ireland’s captivating history. She believes “there is now a need to build understanding and awareness of what the past has bestowed, while providing the business skills to bring new heritage products to the marketplace. The heritage training at Templemore College is designed to achieve this. “The Business with Tourism course will offer students an in-depth knowledge of local heritage. It also provides an understanding of tourisms importance as a key driver of regional employment while delivering industry specific business skills” says Ms Quinlan. For those not wishing to enter the workplace immediately, linkages with Waterford Institute of Technology will allow students, who have successfully completed their year at Templemore College, to progress to higher education. “They will be provided with an option of taking up a reserved place in higher certificate and honours degree programmes” explains Mary Davy. On Saturday 18th August, the sky will be the stage over Terryglass Quay for a fireworks spectacular with live music from the Blood Red Mountain Band as darkness descends. Making a special appearance at the fireworks will be Giggles the Clown who will entertain young and old with his artistry with balloons and his not to be missed antics with the crowd. Sunday is a Family Fun Day featuring an outdoor Craft and Food market; face painting, childrens’ entertainment with Giggles the Clown, Kitty’s Fairy Garden and much much more. There’s non stop free musical entertainment all afternoon from the Blood Red Mountain Band whose first single released last April went to No.1 on the iTunes Country Chart the following day! As if that wasn’t enough, magician Jack Wise will be serving up a Molotov cocktail of comedy, magic and sword Swallowing. As Ireland's only sword
swallower the audience will witness the spine tingling moment when Jack swallows a 24 inch real sword! The highlight of the show has to be Jack's ventriloquism when using a face mask with a movable jaw, Jack will turn an audience member into a side splitting life size puppet! Foodies and craft lovers will enjoy tasting the culinary delights or browsing the original craft work exhibited during Sunday afternoon’s food and craft showcase. Pottery, rushwork, wood turning, copper craft and lots more - a range of crafts people and artisans will be in Terryglass to showcase their work. Speaking this week, Festival Chairperson Emma Pearce said that this year’s Terryglass Arts Festival was especially geared for families. “Terryglass Arts Festival is a well loved family festival which has seen its reputation grow over the past 18 years. Families are at the heart of the festival and I am delighted to see high calibre family entertainment programmed for this year’s festival.” Emma is encouraging families to book early for events, especially for the workshops.

Miraculous Invoaction to St Therese. O glorious Saint Therese, whom almighty God has raised up to aid and counsel mankind, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. So powerful are you in obtaining every need of body and soul our Holy Mother Church proclaims you a “Prodigy of Miracles...the Greatest Saint of Modern times.” Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention specifics here) and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good upon earth...of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Counselling
- Anxiety
(continued from previous issue)
Child Separation Anxiety Disorder (contd.). Diagnosis of. Some ways to ease normal separation anxiety in children. In order to be diagnosed with separation anxiety disorder the psychiatrists’ Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders states that the sufferer must be under 18 years old, have the anxiety for at least a month, and have 3 or more of the following – - Recurrent excessive distress when separation from home or major attachment figures occurs or is anticipated (A major attachment figure is usually a parent, and generally the mother of the sufferer). - persistent and excessive worry about losing, or about possible harm befalling, major attachment figures - persistent and excessive worry that an untoward event will lead to separation from a major attachment figure (e.g., getting lost or being kidnapped) - persistent reluctance or refusal to go to school or elsewhere because of fear of separation - persistently and excessively fearful or reluctant to be alone or without major attachment figures at home or without significant adults in other settings - persistent reluctance or refusal to go to sleep without being near a major attachment figure or to sleep away from home - repeated nightmares involving the theme of separation - Repeated complaints of physical symptoms (such as headaches, stomach aches, nausea, or vomiting) when separation from major attachment figures occurs or is anticipated. While these are the symptoms of Separation Anxiety, some of these symptoms may be caused by some other health problem, for example school phobia may stem not from Separation Anxiety but, for example Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
By Jim O’Shea
Schedule separations after naps or feedings. Babies are more susceptible to separation anxiety when they’re tired or hungry. Develop a “goodbye” ritual. Rituals are reassuring and can be as simple as a special wave through the window or a goodbye kiss. Keep familiar surroundings when possible and make new surroundings familiar. Have the sitter come to your house. When your child is away from home, let him or her bring a familiar object. Have a consistent primary caregiver. If you hire a caregiver, try to keep him or her on the job. Leave without fanfare. Tell your child you are leaving and that you will return, then go—don’t stall. Minimize scary television. Your child is less likely to be fearful if the shows you watch are not frightening. Try not to give in. Reassure your child that he or she will be just fine.
