“You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him James D. Miles

COFFEY’S PHARMACY CASTLE ST., ROSCREA

When the man came home, his wife was crying. "Your mother insulted me," she sobbed. "My mother? How could she do that when she is on vacation on the other side of the world?" the man asked. "I know. But this morning a letter addressed to you arrived. I opened it because I was curious." "And?" "At the end of the letter it was written:

PS. Dear Diane, when you have finished reading this letter, don't forget to give it to my son."

The doctor replied, "I don't know. It's hard to tell by the ears."

After learning the Lamaze method of natural childbirth, I was admitted to the delivery room with my wife. It seemed like an eternity before the doctor finally announced, "I've got the head now; just a few more minutes." "Is it a girl or boy?" I asked excitedly.

The bride was anything but a tidy housekeeper. It didn't bother her much until one evening when her husband called from the hall, somewhat dismayed: "Honey, what happened to the dust on this table? I had a phone number written on it."

Beware Of Computer Phone Scams Another scam has emerged in the world of computers. This time it is con-men cold-calling people either in their business or home, saying that they represent Microsoft and have been getting error messages sent through the internet from the home/business computer saying that hackers are trying to break into the computer. These con-men are very adept at answering questions to allay any suspicions of the person concerned and will talk the unsuspecting victim through a series of computer instructions to show all the error messages and supposed Hacker files. The con-man will then reassure the victim that they will be able to clear the files and protect their computer by installing a special anti-virus program. They will then talk the person

through the downloading, into the payment scheme and then look for payment for the downloaded file. A "secure" credit card payment window will open and the victim will be expected to pay a couple of hundred euro for the product. The program is a virus which could cause the computer to crash, so if anyone should get this call, hang up the phone immediately. These men are very smooth talking and convincing. Microsoft does not sell its product to the public in this way and is working with An Gardai Siochana, The Data Protection Commissioner, ComReg and the National Consumer Agency, to catch these conmen and warn potential victims of this scam.

Super Start to Buddy’s Got Talent The first heat of Buddy’s Got Talent took place on Friday night last 25th February in Buddy’s Bar, Capparoe, and what a night it proved to be. Five fantastic acts competed for a place in the semi-finals and the judges found themselves in an almost impossible position, such was the standard. If this is a taste of things to come over the next few weeks, then the audiences are in for a treat. First up on Friday last was Michael Lambe from Lorrha. Michael accompanied himself on the piano with great skill and style in his 2 songs, Your Song (Elton John) and This Year’s Love (David Gray). The judges were very impressed indeed. Following this we had 9 yr old Fionn Ryan Mulqueen, who gave a rousing rendition of The Premier Rap, suitably attired in his Tipperary jersey! This got a great reaction from both audience and judges. Next was Cian Morris, also from Nenagh. Cian gave his usual high standard, slick performance, involving singing and rapping, and he certainly made a big impression with judges Noel Ryan, and Veronica Crowley. His own original song was particularly impressive. Our only female singer of the night, Bridget Maher from Roscrea, entertained us next with a high-energy and subtle rendition of Big Bad Handsome Man (Imelda May), and then brought us to a very melancholy place with a beautiful version of Olivia Newton-John’s hit, I Honestly Love You. Again judges were most impressed by the very smooth delivery from Bridget. Last on the night was local singer Mikey Finn. Mikey have a heartfelt and intense performance of 2 original songs, and once again both audience and judges were full of praise. It was a great conclusion to night of extremely high standard performances all round. Of course you the audience have a say in the outcome, and after counting the votes from the very large attendance, the audience winner by 1 point, was Fionn Ryan Mulqueen. The judges also put Cian Morris and Mikey Finn through, and those 3 acts qualify for the semi-finals. Going through to the wild card night are Michael Lambe and Bridget Maher. It is still not too late to enter; just get an entry form or easier still simply phone 086-2656257 and you can enter there and then. If you can sing, dance, play an instrument etc then enter and tale part! There is no lower age limit, all are welcome. The next heat is this Friday 4th March when 5 more acts battle it out for your votes and the judge’s approval. For a fantastic night of music and drama the place to be is Buddy’s Bar!

Boccia County Finals On February 15th last, the county boccia finals took place in Holycross GAA Club. The impressive new facilities at the club lent themselves very well to the travelling players and supporters from across the county.

IWA, Roscrea and IWA, South Tipperary reached the finals with the South Tipperary outfit coming away with the spoils in the end. HOLYCROSS

Tipperary GAA Scene (continued) FITZGIBBON CUP THIRD LEVEL COLLEGES HURLING Congratulations to University of Limerick on their victory over Limerick IT in the Fitzgibbon Cup final on Saturday last at Waterford IT. The Tipperary players who played in the final for UL were Thomas Lowry (Holycross Ballycahill), Paddy Stapleton (Borris-Ileigh), Paddy Murphy (Nenagh Éire Óg), Kieran Morris (Moycarkey Borris), Paul Kelly (Mullinahone) and Joe Gallagher (Kildangan). Dinny Ryan of Newport was a selector with UL. We congratulate all the panel and management team on their success. The Fitzgibbon Cup has become fiercely competitive in the last decade or so with a huge amount of effort being put into preparations of the college teams. The programme for the final included comments from former inter-county managers noting its importance in identifying talent for county senior teams. This no doubt adds to the competitiveness surrounding the competition. One wonders if it has actually become too competitive and if the commitment involved makes too many demands on players who are also on inter-county panels at possibly both senior and under 21 level. It certainly merits some debate.

Beauty Queen comes to Borrisokane The Beauty Queen of Leenane is the latest offering from the Borrisokane Players, and will be presented from March 10th to March 13th in the refurbished Clarke Hall. This is an adventurous undertaking for the group, as this Martin McDonagh play is an intense and challenging project indeed. It is part of his trilogy, the other two being A Skull in Connemara, and the The Lonesome West. It has been performed all over the world from London’s West End to Broadway, and as far as Lima, in Peru.

Review your Lifecover now, and save Thousands!!! By Eamonn Walsh QFA Chances are that you have taken out some form of life assurance over the last 5 to 10 years – whether for business or personal purposes. What is to say that what was suitable 5 years ago still is? Nothing really! This is why people carry out a life assurance review. One of the benefits of a competitive market is that prices often fall for the consumer. It’s the same with life assurance – believe it or not but rates for life assurance have fallen in the last couple of years. This means that, despite being a couple of years older than you were when you took out your policy, you could still be paying more than you need to for your life assurance. Here are some frequent reasons why people might have an ineffective life assurance policy that is costing them too much every month. ∙ You used to be a smoker but are now a non-smoker. ∙ You had an interestonly mortgage but don’t anymore. ∙ The value that you had placed on your business was higher than it is now. ∙ You have paid a lump sum off your mortgage and reduced the outstanding balance. ∙ Your kids are now grown up and technically (!), no longer rely on you for financial support.

∙ You may have taken out a very ex pensive and unsuitable Whole of Life policy through a bank. ∙ 16% of clients we reviewed were not covered for the correct term ∙ Serious / Critical illness benefit might no longer be suitable or required. The purpose of a life assurance review is to ensure you have the most suitable policies to match your needs AND to save money, literally Thousands can be saved over your remaining term. If you need financial advice or have any questions on the above article, please don’t hesitate to call me at 0860471147, or at 15 Bank St,Templemore. Tough Climbing in Scotland

Student Enterprise Awards 2010 / 2011 It is that time of year again!

Reports from Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers winter climbing expedition to Scotland suggest the event was another great success. On day one, Ray Creaney and Mary Power ploughed upwards through deep snow, sub-zero temperatures, gale force winds and white-out conditions to lead 10 first time climbers to Ben Nevis summit the highest point on these islands with the photograph above showing the Ben Nevis climbers enjoying a chilly moment of celebration on the summit. Those who successfully completed the Nevis challenge were, Helen Russell, Moyne/Templetuohy; Pakie Purcell, Upperchurch; Marianne Cleary, Thurles; John Barry, Moycarkey; Kay Noonan, Cork; Maura Bowe, Toomevara; Kate and Willie Fahy, Dualla: Willie Hayes, Clonoulty and Angela Maher, Cormackstown. Meanwhile John F Kennedy, John G O'Dwyer and Josephine Tobin completed the famous Ledge Route. Pinned down for a time by gales as other parties retreated, they persisted to complete the route which was in

fine winter condition. Later in the week John F and John G were joined by Ray Creaney, Mary Power for another ascent of the Ledge in more benign conditions while Dan Condren took a large group of intrepid adventure seekers on an exciting ascent of Ben Nevis by the CMD Arete and Jim Finn led lovely walks to the Lost Valley and the Steal Falls. Finally, a reminder that MId-Tipp Hillwalkers next big event, the 15th annual Kerry Charity Challenge takes place in the Kenmare Bay Hotel on April 15/16/17 and offers a huge choice of walks ranging from an ascent of Carrauntoohil to wilderness walking for all fitness levels. All comers are welcome for this long established event which supports the cause of visually impaired people and costs a 199 euro all in. What’s Happening in O’Donovan Rossa Street, Thurles Anyone passing through O’Donovan Rossa Street, Thurles would have noticed the new hoarding above Andy Spillane Bespoke Kitchens. In a time when unfortunately many businesses and shops are closing down, we were delighted to hear that a new kitchen showroom is coming to Thurles. Andy Spillane Bespoke Kitchens are redesigning and doubling the size of their showroom. In order to help you design the kitchen of your dreams, Savvy Kitchens (formerly known as Andy Spillane Bespoke Furniture) will open their brand new showroom on the 25th March. “We’ve been in Thurles since 2007 and decided to rebrand the business as the market has changed a lot. We found that the key to a great kitchen is understanding, understanding how customers live and what makes them happy and we felt that Andy Spillane Bespoke didn’t capture that so we came up with a new brand but our

great attention to detail and service hasn’t changed”, said Andy Spillane, Managing Director, Savvy Kitchens. Andy added that “Most showrooms just show small kitchen displays. While they look great, it can be hard for the customer to imagine what they’d look like in their own house. We’re doing something different with our room sets. You can walk around and see how they would fit in your own home” So keep your eyes on O’Donovan Rossa Street for this exciting addition to the Thurles shopping scene. John Giles Visits Tipperary to Launch Walk of Dreams The Horse & Jockey Hotel was the venue for the Tipperary launch of the John Giles Foundation Walk of Dreams which will take place in Thurles on the 27th March. John Giles was in attendance for the launch which also included representatives from Clubs affiliated to the (i) Tipperary & District Women’s Soccer League (ii) North Tipperary School Children’s Football League, (iii) Tipperary Schoolboys Southern & District League, (iv) North Tipperary & District League, (v) Tipperary Southern & District League. The Garda Siochána were also represented in addition to other members of the soccer fraternity across Tipperary. The John Giles Foundation was set up in early 2010 and launched on the “The Late Late Show” as part of the celebrations to mark John Giles 70th birthday. The John Giles Foundation Walk of Dreams project is a fundraising initiative to raise funds which will be distributed to Clubs, Schools and various Community Groups. It is the aspiration of the Foundation that the Walk of Dreams fundraising event will see participation from the 2,600 affiliated Soccer Clubs across the country. John Gile’s autobiography “A Football Man” was launched last November and as a mark of generosity and commitment to the Foundation, John Giles has kindly donated all sales proceeds

to the fund. The Vision of the Foundation is to create stronger, safer and friendlier communities throughout Ireland; making opportunities a right, not a privilege. John Giles said “I grew up, like many of us did, playing on the street. We were just having fun and had never heard of professional football. I never dreamt of where it would take me, or realised what a difference the sport was making to our community. Today it’s a different story, with different rules, and now more than ever people at risk need our support” More details on the John Giles Foundation can be found on www.johngilesfoundation.com Thurles will be one of 14 venues nationwide to host the Walk of Dreams on Sunday 27th March, the walk distance will be circa 4km and young & old are all welcome to participate. Participation on the day will also include high profile soccer players and other celebrity guests in addition to representation from all 74 Soccer Clubs across County Tipperary. Kevin Cummins is the Tipperary Walk of Dreams Project Manager, please contact Kevin on 087 4189660 / Kevin.cummins@johngilesfoundation. com for more details.

Counselling When a couple have abusive tendencies Continued from last issue So far the focus has been on individual abusers. But what if two people in a relationship are abusive? Research shows that those who have been abused in childhood are strongly drawn to each other. They form a dysfunctional relationship, often with one being the victim and the other the abuser. This is what was normal for them in childhood. This dysfunctional relationship has a deeply negative impact on children. I feel that an emotionally abusive couple will find it impossible to resolve their abuse without the help of a therapist. I recommend Beverly Engel as a good source for couples who wish to heal themselves and their relationship. She lays out some practical steps in how to heal such a relationship. The first step is to find out if the couple feel that their relationship can be salvaged. There are some practical ways to do this, for example the couple could individually check the following list and then compare them: · Do you hold out much hope that your relationship can improve? · Do you feel that the abuse can be stopped? · Do you feel that your partner can change his/her behaviours? · Do you feel that you can change yours? · Do you feel your partner is willing to make the effort to change by exploring the past? · Do you feel that you are willing to make the effort to change by exploring the past? · Do you feel that you both can change the abusive dynamics of the relationship? · Do you feel that you and your partner are willing to commit to changing the dynamics? · Are you both willing to stop blaming each other for all the problems in the relationship? Engel is not of the view, outlined in another article, that the rate of healing abusers is depressingly low. I like this optimism, although I still feel that it takes great effort and courage to tackle abusive tendencies and behaviours. Engel lays out a practical programme for partners who feel a sense of hope that they can stop the mutual abuse in their relationship. If the response to the list is negative then there is little possibility that the abuse can be stopped, and it is unlikely that the partners will follow the steps listed below. These steps are as follows: · A sharing of histories. By looking at each other’s histories the partners gain understanding of the influences that generated their abusive tendencies. This does not, however, excuse their abusive behaviours. Sharing their histories also helps them to bond and develop empathy for each other. Sufficient time should be made for telling individual histories, and these stories should include neglect, abandonment, and any type of abuse that took place in childhood. It is not a chronological history. Each partner should listen carefully to the other’s story. When the stories are told they should be discussed, and the emotional reaction should be shown. A further aspect of sharing the story is to look at how their parents interacted with each other, for example did they show their feelings easily, did they discuss their problems or just argue, did they blame each other, did they fight often, was there long silences between them, did they shout at each other, did they punish each other, and were they emotionally abusive to each other? One or both may have been abusive. · Discover and acknowledge your part in the problem. This may mean being the victim,

By Jim O’Shea being too complacent and giving in to your partner’s demands, or it may mean being the abuser. It also means setting aside sufficient time for this exercise and being as specific as possible, giving examples of how you contributed to the abusive relationship. It is vital to listen to this difficult admission without interruption, and if your partner left something out to remind him that his/her admission is incomplete. Your partner may need further time to consider this. · Apologise for past hurts and agree to move on. In this step sufficient time should be made to work through it. It involves making a list of all the ways you have abused your partner. Before you can do this properly you must educate yourself on what abuse is. Read out the list and then sincerely apologise for each one. · Discover and discuss how your issues feed off each other. This is where the behaviours of respective partners may intensify each other responses. For example one partner may be clingy, suspicious and jealous, while the other may be secretive and withdrawn, thus fuelling the suspicion and jealousy. These behaviours have their roots in childhood. · Share your triggers. Abuse sometimes occurs when certain buttons are pushed by the respective partners. It is therefore important to disclose these buttons to each other, because it helps each one to understand the other better. These buttons go back to childhood experiences. · Set boundaries and limits. In all relationships each partner has certain behaviours that are unacceptable to him/her. These behaviours are also triggers, and may make each partner uncomfortable. It is best to write down a list of your partner’s behaviours that are unacceptable to you. The list may include negative comments about you to others, making fun of you in front of others, or opening your letters. When this is done choose a time to discuss them and ask your partner if he/she will honour these boundaries and limits. · Agree to disagree. It may not be possible to agree on every issue, so it is important to allow space to disagree, and to realise that not every issue can be resolved. · I feel that individual therapy is vital in helping couples to deal with abusive relationships. There could be a combination of couple counselling and individual therapy. The problem here is expense, since three therapists would be involved. But if people change for the better and a relationship changes for the better it is money well spent. Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles. Ph.0878211009 www.jimoshea.net.
