He said: What do you call a woman who knows where her husband is every night? She said: A widow.

There was once a small boy who banged a drum all day and loved every moment of it. He would not be quiet, no matter what anyone else said or did. Various attempts were made to do something about the child. One person told the boy that he would, if he continued to make so much noise, perforate his eardrums. This reasoning was too advanced for the child, who was neither a scientist nor a scholar. A second person told him that drum beating was a sacred activity and should be carried out only on special occasions. The third person offered the neighbors plugs for their ears; a fourth gave the boy a book; a fifth gave the neighbors books that described a method of controlling anger through biofeedback; a sixth person gave the boy meditation exercises to make him placid and docile. None of these attempts worked. Eventually, a wise person came along with an effective motivation. He looked at the situation, handed the child a hammer and chisel, and asked, "I wonder what is INSIDE the drum?" No more problem.

Mike and Joan were having some problems at home and were giving

each other the "silent treatment." But then Mike realized that he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 am for an early morning drive with some pals to go golfing. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and so lose the 'war'), he wrote on a piece of paper, "Please wake me at 5:00am." The next morning, Mike woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 am and that his friends had left for the golf course without him. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't awakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, "It's 5:00 am. Wake up." Men simply are not equipped for these kinds of contests.

A burglar has just made it into the house he's intending ransacking, and he's looking around for stuff to steal. All of a sudden, a little voice pipes up, "I can see you, and so can Jesus!" Startled, the burglar looks around the room. No one there at all, so he goes back to his business. "I can see you, and so can Jesus!" The burglar jumps again, and takes a longer look around the room. Over in the corner by the window, almost obscured by curtains, is a cage in which sits a parrot, who pipes up again, "I can see you, and so can Jesus!" "So what," says the burglar, "you're only a parrot!" To which the parrot replies, "Maybe, but Jesus is a rottweiler!"

I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

The DVD in aid of the Rape Crisis Centre in Limerick will be launched on Saturday 19th March in the Clare Inn Hotel. As well as the launch of the DVD, there will be a night of entertainment for all dance lovers, including music, dance performances and plenty of opportunities to take to the floor. All proceeds for the night will be going to the Rape Crisis Centre. 'I feel that supporting local charities in the current climate is so important. I am very lucky to able to raise money by doing something that I enjoy. I can also include so many in the project and this helps to raise awareness, as well as having a great deal of fun,' Bridget says. Rape Crisis Midwest provides support, information and counselling service to survivors of rape, sexual assault, child sexual abuse and incest. We provide free confidential crisis, long term and telephone counselling. We offer a safe and supportive environment to enable those survivors to find the best way forward. Training and education is a fundamental aspect to the work here at Rape Crisis and we run a number of training

courses throughout the year. We have offices based in Limerick, Ennis and Nenagh.

The DVD will include basic dance instructions for the Slow Waltz, Jive, Quickstep and Foxtrot. There will also be clips of her students performing the West Coast Swing, Rock and Roll, Jive, Mambo, ChaCha, Tango and much more. The DVD, which is on sale for 7 euro, would make a perfect gift for any bride or grooms to be who want to practice for their first dance or for people who just want to try out the steps at home before taking to the ballroom.

Tickets are priced at 20 euro (price includes the 'Shall we Dance' DVD). Contact Bridget Harte A.I.B.B.D.086-3811086 for tickets. The programme is looking to champion independent Irish retailers who represent individuality on the streets of Ireland’s towns and cities. The History of The Wedding Dress By Martin Gosling

In western culture, weddings performed during and immediately following the Middle Ages were often more than a union between just two people. They could also be a union between two families, two businesses or even two countries. Many weddings were more of a matter of politics than that of love. Brides were therefore expected to dress in a manner that cast their families in the most favourable light, for they were not representing only themselves in the ceremony.

Today, Western wedding dresses are usually white. White did not become a popular option until 1840, after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Victoria had worn a white gown for the event so as to incorporate some lace she owned. Many other brides opted for a similar dress in honour of the Queen’s choice. The tradition continues today in the form of a white wedding. Many people assumed that the colour white was intended to represent virginity, though this had not been the original intention. The white gown is in fact a symbolic Christening gown. They are a variation of white surplice worn in the Western Catholic tradition by members of the clergy, church choirs and servers and the gowns worn by girls making their first communion and their first confirmation and also by women making religious vows.

Over the centuries, brides continued to dress in a manner that was befitting of their social status. The amount of material a wedding dress contained also reflected the bride’s social standing and indicated the extent of the family’s wealth. Today, there are wedding dresses available in all price ranges. Women may purchase ready-made gowns, wear a family heirloom, or they may choose a dressmaker to Today, the white dress is normally create one for her. Indian brides in Western countries often wear the sari at the wedding ceremony and change into traditional Indian wear afterwards. Ponder These 1. Does a clean house indicate that there is a broken computer in it? 2. Why is it that no matter what colour of bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white? 3. Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? 4. Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized? 5. On electric toasters, why do they engrave the message "oneslice"? How many pieces of bread do they think people are really gonna try to stuff in that slot? 6. Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance? 7. Why is it that no plastic garbage bag will open from the end you first try? 8. How do those dead bugs get into those closed light fixtures? 9. Considering all the lint you get in your dryer, if you kept drying your clothes would they eventually just disappear? 10. When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart than apologizes for doing so, why do we say, "It's all right?" When, it isn't all right .

Grow It Yourself Week GIY week got off to a good start in North Tipperary, with the launch of a new group in Cloughjordan. A good crowd gathered at Cloughjordan House, and were treated to some cakes from Sarah Baker of the cookery school. There were talks from local grower Lily de Sylva, Davie Philip of Green Works, and Sarah Fleming, the regional champion for GIY Ireland. There was plenty to do outside in the sunshine too, with a tour of the vegetable gardens and a demonstration of vintage ploughing from Denis Cahalane. Sarah Baker plans to grow all her vegetables for the cookery school here, and there will be lots more activities through the year. The GIY group will be meeting every month to exchange gardening know-how. All events and advice are free, and the group is open to all. Counselling Depression By Jim O’Shea For some reason when I think of depression, the poem I wake and feel the fell of dark not day comes to mind. I studied this poem long ago in Thurles C.B.S. It was composed by the Jesuit priest, Gerald Manly Hopkins, who lived from 1844 until 1889. I’m not sure if the teacher put it in the context of depression, but Hopkins, a master of the English language and of unusual imagery, paints a picture of a tormented soul shrouded in darkness and despair. I think that people who suffer from depression could identify with Hopkins’ sentiments. I might add that the founder of the Jesuit order, St. Ignatius of Loyola, referred to the ’dark night of the soul’ which blighted him for a long time. Like Hopkins he was not referring to depression, but the description can be aptly applied to the condition of depression. At any rate read the poem and see what you think, and see how Hopkins portrays the darkness that entered his whole being. I wake and feel the fell of dark, not day. What hours, O what black hours we have spent This night! What sights you, heart, saw; ways you went! And more must, in yet longer light’s delay. I am gall, I am heartburn. God’s most deep decree Bitter would have me taste: my taste was me; Bones built in me, flesh filled, blood brimmed the curse. Selfyeast of spirit a dull dough sours. I see The lost are like this, and their scourge to be As I am mine, their sweating selves; but worse. (Gerard Manly Hopkins (1844-1889)

Depression is an extensive and complicated reality, and it is estimated that by 2020 it will rank second only to heart disease as a worldwide problem. It has been aptly described as a democratic complaint, affecting anyone, rich or poor, old or young, and people of all races. In the coming articles I will not be concerned with the normal use of depression as temporary mood swings over sad events, but with what the psychologists, Constance Hammen and Edward Watkins, have called ‘a constellation of experiences including not only mood, but also physical, mental, and behavioural experiences that define more prolonged, impairing, and severe conditions’. There are several areas that I will not cover in my articles. These include the use of antidepressants. As a counsellor I place my faith in psychotherapy and counselling as a way to deal with depression. I certainly work with people who

are taking anti-depressants, but I do not have sufficient knowledge of these medicines to include them in my writings. Neither will I include much on the genetic causes of depression, however interesting they are. My belief is that depression is natural, and generally is a response to life’s difficulties. For those interested in the genetic aspect area I recommend the book Flagging the Therapy. Pathways out of Depression and Anxiety by Dr Harry Barry. As I mentioned already, depression is very complicated, and there are many technical and scholarly articles published on it. But, I will do my best to make it as simple as I can in my articles. I’m not sure if this will help those who suffer from depression, but sometimes understanding the nature of a complaint can be helpful. A very good way of understanding depression is to be aware of its symptoms. This in particular can be very useful for people who suffer from depression or those live with a depressed person. So before I look at the types of depression (which can be a bit academic) I will have a general look at these symptoms. Depression falls into the category of what psychiatrists call affective disorders (associated with feelings), which are defined by manifestations of abnormal affect or mood. These present as sadness, being down in the dumps, being under a black cloud, feeling empty, and, especially in the case of children, being irritable. Not all people exhibit sadness or a depressed mood, but may experience a loss of interest or pleasure in life, and so not get any pleasure from normally pleasurable activities. This is called anhedonia. Pleasure and satisfaction is no longer enjoyed from work or pastimes; and the depressed person finds it difficult to shake off the symptoms. It is like seeing the world without colour - a black, white, and grey experience.
