The first morning after the honeymoon, the husband got up early, went down to the kitchen, and brought his wife her breakfast in bed. Naturally, she was delighted. Then he spoke: "Have you noticed just what I have done?" "Of course, dear. Every single detail!" "Good. That's how I want my breakfast served every morning."

blurted out, "That`s the ugliest baby I've ever seen!" Infuriated, the woman slammed her fare into the fare box and took an aisle seat near the rear of the bus. The man seated next to her sensed that she was agitated and asked her what was wrong. "The bus driver insulted me," she fumed. The man sympathized and said, "Why, he shouldn't say things to insult A woman got on a bus holding a baby. passengers. He could be fired for The bus driver looked at the child and that."

"You're right," she said. "I think I'll go back up there and give him a piece of my mind!" "That's a good idea," the man said. "Here, let me hold your monkey."

On reaching his plane seat a man is surprised to see a parrot strapped in next to him. He asks the stewardess for a coffee where upon the parrot squawks "And get me a whisky you cow!" The stewardess, flustered, brings back a whisky for the parrot and forgets the coffee. When this omission is pointed out to her the parrot drains its glass and bawls "And get me another whisky you idiot". Quite upset, the girl comes back shaking with another whisky but still no coffee. Unaccustomed to such slackness the man tries the parrot's approach "I've asked you twice for a coffee, go and get it now or I'll kick you". The next moment, both he and the parrot have been wrenched up and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly stewards. Plunging downwards the parrot turns to him and says "For someone who can't fly, you complain too much!"

It is only two weeks into the term that, in a calculus class, a student raises his hand and asks: "Will we ever need this stuff in real life?" The professor gently smiles at him and says: "Of course not - if your real life will consist of flipping hamburgers at MacDonald's!"

One night, a police officer was stalking out a particularly rowdy bar for possible violations of the driving under the influence laws. At closing time, he saw a fellow stumble out of the bar, trip on the curb, and try his keys on five different cars before he found his. Then, sat in the front seat fumbling around with his keys for several minutes. Everyone left the bar and drove off. Finally, he started his engine and began to pull away. The police officer was waiting for him. He stopped the driver, read him his rights and administered the Breathalyzer test. The results showed a reading of 0.0. The puzzled officer demanded to know how that could be. The driver replied, "Tonight, I'm the Designated Decoy."

This month saw our students visiting some of Thurles’ cultural attractions. They visited an exhibition by Tipperary based Artist, Thomas Barron, in The Source Arts Centre entitled “Coming Home”. The exhibition comprised of large scale, expressive, abstract paintings which generated a lot of discussion from the students. They also visited a display of sculptural works by Holycross based Artist Philip Quinn which are mounted on a wall beside Thurles Credit Union. Philip worked with community groups in Tipperary to make a series of pieces that reflected the various beliefs and cultures inherent in the communities. Thurles Education Centre were given the unique opportunity to work with Philip which resulted in him creating a metal disc inscribed with words from the Traveller language; Cant.

As part of their CSPE Junior Certificate programme Martin Taylor visited the students to discuss the Chernobyl project in Thurles. The project brings children from Chernobyl to stay with host families in Ireland each summer. The students were inspired by the project and the good work that was being done through it. Our students successfully completed their Junior Certificate mock exams which took place In The Source Arts Centre community space. The positive results have given our students a lot of confidence for their final exams. It is becoming a tradition for us to do something for charity for St Patricks day each year. This year we made shamrock badges which we sold to the local community. This year we raised E100.00 for Suir Havan, cancer support centre in Thurles.

Tipperary’s hurlers played an exciting draw against Cork in Round 5 of the Allianz Hurling League at Páirc Uí Chaoimh last Sunday. Both sides needed a win to enhance their chances of qualifying for the final. While it is still possible for one of Cork or Tipperary to qualify for the final, it will require results in other games to go their way. At a minimum either Galway or Kilkenny must lose both their remaining games and most pundits would deem than unlikely. For Tipperary, they must win their two remaining games and hope then that other results go their way. Either way, they travel to Galway next weekend knowing that a win keeps them in the hunt and with Galway no doubt intent on retaining their league title, it makes Sunday’s encounter at Salthill an attractive game. The game at Pearse Stadium will commence at 2.30pm with James Owens of Wexford in charge. It will be the 66th league meeting between the 2 counties. Tipperary lead the way with 42 wins, Galway have been successful on 18 occasions and there have been 5 draws. Tipperary have won the last 3 league encounters between the sides, the group games at Semple Stadium and Pearse Stadium in 2010 and 2009 respectively and the Allianz Hurling League final in Limerick in 2008. Their last competitive encounter was in the 2010 All Ireland quarter final at Croke Park where Tipperary won by 3-17 to 3-16, a last minute point from Lar Corbett securing Tipp’s passage. Incidentally, Sunday’s referee James Owens was also in charge of that game. MUNSTER UNDER 21 FOOTBALL – TIPP V CORK Commiserations to the Tipperary Under 21 footballers and management on their exit from the Cadbury’s Munster Under 21 football championship after losing to Cork in last week’s semi-final at Páirc Uí Rinn by 0-21 to 2-3.

that only the New Stand will be open on Sunday. The game will be preceded by the Ladies Football League game between Tipperary and Sligo at 12.45pm. LIAM SHEEDY - TIPPERARY PERSON OF THE YEAR Congratulations to Liam Sheedy on being named Tipperary Person of the Year for 2010 by the Tipperary Association Dublin. The award is richly deserved and is a very fitting acknowledgement of Liam’s huge contribution to Tipperary’s All Ireland senior hurling championship success in 2010. The award will be presented at the Tipperary Association’s Annual Dinner at the Regency Hotel, Dublin on Friday, April 29th. Congratulations also to Bishop Willie Walsh, retired Bishop of Killaloe and native of Roscrea, who has been chosen to receive the Association’s Hall of Fame award. Well done to the Tipperary Association Dublin, led by their President, Jarlath Daly, for choosing two highly appropriate honourees. CLUB OFFICERS INFORMATION NIGHT Club Chairmen, Secretaries, Treasurers and PROs are reminded that there will be a Club Officers Information Night in the Horse and Jockey Hotel this Thursday, March 31st at 8pm. The agenda will include club finances, the role of the volunteer, club development, public relations and the role of the club in the GAA and community, fixtures planning and a question and answer session. TIPPERARY CLUBS DRAW The Tipperary Clubs Draw for 2011/12 will be launched and promoted during April. The clubs draw continues to be the primary source of income for most clubs and it is worth the considerable effort that goes into promoting it. The draw relies on the support of a superb network of promoters inside and outside the county who work tirelessly to maximise sales. This year once again there will be a great array of prizes on offer including cars, holidays and cash prizes. Clubs looking for promotional material should contact the Draw Coordinator, Ger Bradley at the GAA Office in Thurles on 0504 22702 or by email at tippdraw.tipperary@gaa.ie. Draw committee members and county board officers will visit clubs during April to promote the benefits of the draw. At a time when many clubs are struggling to raise the necessary finance to support their activities, the Clubs Draw is one of the best ways to raise money and has the added benefit of affording supporters the opportunity to win great prizes. Strong Tipperary presence in London's new hurling club There will be a strong Tipperary presence when London's latest hurling club makes its debut this Sunday in Mitcham. Five years since the establishment of their successful football club, Fulham Irish hurlers line out against Clann na nGael - one of the longest established clubs in south London and managed for many years by Dualla native Tommy Dargan. Fulham Irish who become the fourth south London-based club are managed by former Sean Treacy's stalwart Martin Carroll. The club is based in Earlsfield where almost twenty of the current panel had one of their final work-outs last Saturday before taking on the Saffrons this Sunday. The Roscrea native, who has played for London for many years and is an uncle of former Tipperary All-Star hurler, John Carroll, said he was very encouraged by the reaction he has received since the club decided to affiliate a hurling team this year after five successful years as a football club which included reaching an All-Ireland club semi-final two years ago. Although the new club's playing panel is drawn from a wide cross-section of counties there are a number from the Premier county including such as Ballingarry brothers, Declan and David O'Connell, Sean Purcell also from Ballingarry, Colm Kennedy (Cahir), Philip Dalton (Carrick-onSuir) and Tom O'Keefe. interested players arriving in London are invited to get involved by contacting Martin Carroll on 00 44 7885459080 or log on to website: www.fulhamirishgaa.org.

World Class Performance for Cloughjordan Anticipation of the world-class Engegård Quartet performance in St. Kieran’s Church in Cloughjordan is growing. The highlight of the performance will surely be Haydn’s C major quartet, which is probably Haydn’s most famous quartet because of the variations in the slow movement on the Emperor’s hymn Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, which Haydn had composed in early 1797. Each movement begins with the same five notes, G-E-F-D-C, which are the first letters of the five title words of the hymn. St Kieran’s Church, built in 1830, is a truly superb venue for classical music because of its excellent acoustics. Lovers of classical music and good food will want to experience a pre-concert meal at beautiful Cloughjordan House, a short stroll away from St Kieran’s Church. New car sales surpass 40,000 Figures just out from SIMI show that 40,978 new cars have been sold this year since the end of last week, an increase of 14% on last year. Speaking on the milestone, SIMI’s Director General Alan Nolan says, “Its good to be able to report that it’s not all bad news out there in the economy, there is still some positivity. With new car sales up by more than 5,000 on last year, the Scrappage Scheme is continuing to help attract motorists to showrooms and the lower asking prices, even for non-scrappage cars, are encouraging consumers to buy now.”

“That being said, these figures have to be seen in context, they remain a long way off the levels achieved in the very buoyant era of 2007 and earlier. There is no doubt that consumers are still being fairly cautious, and we really do need to see consumer confidence beginning to lift. However, consumers are still interested in taking advantage of a good deal when one is available and this is reflected in the continuing strength of new car sales. All in all, the industry remains cautiously optimistic as the signs so far this year are encouraging.”

Book Review The Polytunnel Book By Joyce and Ben Russell Joyce and Ben Russell’s The Polytunnel Book has come out at the perfect time for the growing numbers interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables. The couple also live in West Cork, which means they are well accustomed to Irish growing conditions. The book is beautifully produced, full of Ben Russell’s beautiful photography, and contains all the practical advice you could need organised in easy-to-use sections. The most important section comes first: it contains guidance on choosing, locating, and putting up a tunnel, things enthusiastic beginners often neglect to consider. Subsequent sections are ‘A Few Essentials’, covering seeds and compost; a month-by-month guide; ‘Fruit and Vegetables at a Glance’; pests and diseases; ongoing care; and how to make your own compost and fertiliser teas. The Russell’s grow organically, so the sections on man-

County Tipperary Community Games The Munster Finals for all Winter Team Games were held on Saturday last, 26th March in the University of Limerick. Congratulations & well done to competitors from County Tipperary who won Gold medals in U/15 Boys Handball and Silver medals in the U/13 boys Handball and U/15 girls Indoor Soccer. The Boys U/15 winning Handball team came from Cashel & they had a clear cut win over Kilkishen/Oatfield, Co Clare in the semi final and an equally impressive victory over Drumcollogher/Broadford, Co. Limerick in the final. Team members were:- Jonathan Walsh, Kevin Ryan Adam White Dempsey Daniel Hayes Adam Kennedy Jamie O’Keeffe.

Moycarkey Borris U/12 Mixed Chess Team who took part in the Community Games Munster Finals in UL recently

In the Boys U/13 Handball competition, the Cashel boys again had a good win over Drumcollogher/Broadford, Co Limerick in the semi final and the final proved to be a spectacular contest between Cashel and Kilkisheen/Oatfield, Co. Clare who had defeated Mallow, Co. Cork in their semi final. It was a closely fought contest from start to finish which resulted in Cashel being defeated by only one ace. Silver medals were presented to:- Colin Ryan Conal Bonnar Patrick Fahey Ross Bonner Luke White and Michael O Meara. The Cashel Girls U/15 team consisted of:- Amy Maher Janeanne Fitzgerald Celine Walsh Lorna Hore Eimear Allison and Kelly Corbett. These girls were defeated by Derg, Co Clare in the semi final but they are a young team who played well and will have benefited from the experience. Thanks to John O’Donoghue who is so committed to the sport and to Community Games, to Mary Harding and to everybody who assisted with the teams. The Girls U/15 Indoor Soccer Silver medal winners were the gallant young ladies from Powerstown-Lisronagh who always treat their mentors and supporters to wonderful displays of speed and skill. Due to the luck of the draw the girls had to play 3 games in their section of the competition. They had a 2 – 1 victory over Rathkeale, Co Limerick in the quarter final. Rathkeale were the

first to score but goals from Evrena Everard and Aoife Power put PowerstownLisronagh into the semi-final where they were opposed by Inch, Co. Clare. Megan Shanahan commenced the scoring with a penalty. Free flowing movement from Evrena Everard lead to a further goal and great clearance from the back set up Aoife Power for a goal which resulted in a 3 – 0 lead at half time. Clare scored during the second half but another penalty by Megan Shanahan and a goal by Michelle McMeel brought the final score to 5 – 1. In the final the girls faced an exceptionally strong team from Listowel, Co Kerry who beat Cork in their semi final. While our young ladies again played exceptionally well, despite the loss of Hazel Shanahan and Leanne Ryan who had to leave after the semi final, to play an important football match with their school, the Loretto Convent, Clonmel, they could put the ball everywhere except in the net and luck favoured Kerry who scored just one goal. Megan Shanahan who managed to play all over the place also suffered an injury to her ankle. All the girls played an excellent game but time just ran out on them. However they were somewhat compensated for their disappointment as they had a chat with Rugby Star, Paul O’Connell, who was fresh from his victory with the Munster Rugby Team on Friday night. Paul called into U.L. along with some of his team mates on Saturday morning to the delight of competitors and non competitors alike. Well done to Manager Olivia Shanahan and all the following staunch supporters who attend all the games, The O’Connors, Powers, McMeel’s, McDermott’s, Everard’s etc.. Silver medals were won by Evrena Everard, Sarah McDermott, Cliona Collins, Aoife Power, Leanne Ryan, Megan Shanahan, Hazel Shanahan, Michelle McMeel. 7 other teams from Tipperary also made the trip to U.L & competed very well for their parishes & County. Results are as follows:Chess U12 Mixed Moycarkey Borris were defeated by Castleconnell, Limerick in the Semi Final. Draughts U10 Mixed Lattin-Cullen defeated by Tulla, Clare in the Semi Final. Draughts U12 Mixed Lattin-Cullen defeated by Tulla, Clare in the Semi Final Table Tennis U13 Boys MoycarkeyBorris defeated by Caherslee, Kerry in Semi Final. Indoor Soccer U/13 Boys Templemore defeated by Caherdavin Limerick in Quarter Final. Indoor Soccer U/13 Girls Nenagh defeated by Enniskeen, Cork in Quarter Final. Indoor Soccer U/15 Boys Toomevara defeated by Dingle, Kerry in Quarter Final who went on to win the final. Congratulations & well done to all our teams. For many of them, this was their first experience at Munster Finals & they all did us proud on the day. We hope they all had an enjoyable experi-

ence & that we will see them all back again next year. The County Finals for Community Games Cross Country will be held this Thursday, 31st March in Thurles Crokes A.C. grounds at 7pm. Entries are on the night & all athletes should be checked in by 6.45pm. The following races will be run on the night:1) U-13 1200m mixed, the first 5 boys & 5 girls over the line will form the County Panel; 2) U-12 Boys & U-12 Girls 600m, the first 6 in each race will form the County Relay Panel with a team of 4 to run; 3) U-14 Boys & U-14 Girls 600m, the first 6 in each race will form the County Relay Panel with a team of 4 to run. All competitors must be under the age specified on 31st July 2011. All finalists go forward to the National Finals Weekend 1 which will be held in AIT, Athlone, Co. Westmeath on the 27th to 29th May. Please note that like last year, the Community Games Cross Country National Finals will be on Sunday 29th May & will clash with the Quarter Final of the Munster Championships when Tipperary play Cork in Semple Stadium. To avoid the same situation as last year, all areas are asked to explain this to their athletes & confirm their availability on the May weekend before they run in the County selection race. The County Projects Finals will be held in Dunkerrin Parish Hall, Dunkerrin (near Moneygall) on Saturday 2nd April. There is a 6pm start for setting up projects followed by judging at 7.15pm. The County Handwriting Finals for Boys & Girls U/10 will also be held on the same night (Saturday 2nd April) in Dunkerrin Parish Hall commencing at 5.30pm & finishing at 6.30pm with judging immediately afterwards. Lorrha Hat-Trick They said it couldn't be done but a group of people from the Friar's Tavern in Lorrha proved them wrong! 'My Big Fat Royal Wedding', their entry in the St.Patrick's Day parades, took the overall winners prize in the Portumna parade on Thursday. The entry centred around the forthcoming wedding of Prince William (JP Houlihan) and Kate Middleton (Megan O'Meara). The Queen (Diane Dagg) made an appearance in the Royal car driven by her chauffuer (Dan Kennedy) and she was protected by her bodyguard (Eugene Kennedy). Prince Harry (Anthony Ryan) was seen wandering about the place looking a bit worse for wear! Other guests included Posh (Natalie Duane) and 'Golden Balls' Becks (Cormac Houlihan/Michael Kennedy)Elton John (Andrew Dagg) along with his partner David Furnish (Tommy Houlihan) brought along

their new baby Zachary (Cat Power) but struggled to find a babysitter. Prince Charles (Mark Houlihan) and Camilla (Carmel Slevin) looked lovely in their matching tartan attire. Like any celebrity wedding the paparazzi (John Kelly, Tony Needham, Jayne Walters) weren't far away, fighting to get the best photos. There were a few scuffles but no injuries reported. The Queen was meeting the public and shaking hands when Col. Gaddafi (James Heenan) turned up, obviously annoyed that he didn't get an invite. He was trying to sell his Libyan oil to anyone and everyone in between taking shots at the Queen. The Queen's bodyguard was later seen

exchanging money with Gaddafi before the wedding party knocked him to the ground. With no time to spare the group raced to Lorrha to re-enact the drama in the Lorrha parade where they took 1st prize again. On Sunday it was off to the Borrisokane Parade where they completed the hat-trick. Redwood National School also won twice with their entry the Redwood Bandits (Courtney Houlihan, Leon Houlihan, Celine Cleary, Donna Milne, David Sullivan, Stephen Sullivan & Alan O'Meara). They won the Junior prize in Lorrha and Borrisokane. Mick Quirke won Best Vintage vehicle in Borrisokane too. A great winning streak for the Parish. Well done to all involved.

Lorrha St.Patrick's Day Committee, Tommy HoulihanChairman, Catherine Power, Secretary and James Heenan, Treasurer, would like to thank everyone who took part in any way, especially to Ronan King for the trailer, to the Stewards Paul Houlihan, Brian Houlihan, Mark Mannion and Eugene Ryan, and to everyone who turned up on the day. Special thanks to The Friar's Tavern and Lorrha Active Retirement who sponsored prizes for the draw. Photos from all three parades can be seen on www.lorrhadorrha.com

Counselling Depression By Jim O’Shea Depression can also be seen as a disorder of thinking, as much as of mood. Depressed people have negative thoughts about themselves, and almost everything to do with themselves. They live in a negative world, consider themselves as worthless and incompetent, and are extremely critical of themselves. They have a strong and prominent critical inner voice. They never feel good enough, and are guilt-filled because of supposed shortcomings. They are often people of low self-esteem, although low self-esteem does not necessarily point to depression. Depressive thoughts create a bleak future whereby happiness and success are not attainable. This type of thinking reflects hopelessness and despair, which may give rise to suicidal thoughts. Such people are plagued by and their lives ruled by negative and irrational thinking. Ironically such crooked thinking also makes the unfortunate sufferer sink deeper into depression, and prolongs the episodes of depression. Depression sometimes interferes with mental functioning in the areas of concentration, memory and decision making. Seriously depressed people find it difficult to make simple decisions and are unable to make serious ones. Memory defect can create panic especially in older people, who feel that they may be suffering from dementia. This memory deficit may be due to distraction by crooked depressive thoughts. Several cognitive (to do with how we think) models of depression based on these symptoms have been constructed. Many theorists have come to the conclusion that negative thinking is not only a symptom of depression, but may also reveal a vulnerability to develop depression. In other words negative thinking is not only a symptom of depression, but may also be a cause of it. Almost 40 years ago, Aaron Beck, a psychiatrist and medical doctor, was the first to construct a cognitive model of depression based on negative thinking. He proposed that an underlying tendency to depression was due to tendencies to perceive the self, the world and the future in a negative way. So it might be assumed that people who have a naturally optimistic way of thinking have a good safeguard against depression. Beck reflected upon characteristic thinking that is based on negative expectations and interpretations about the self, the world and the future. Beck believed that such thinking was distorted and ignored very evident positive factors in a person’s life. This faulty information processing was subconscious and habitual. It is really important to become aware of how we think, and to identify negative thinking, bring it out, challenge it and substitute it with positive thinking. Everybody has encountered positive experiences. It is al-

ways good to look at one’s resources, identify them and write them down to make them more concrete. Other theorists expanded Beck’s model of depression, and for example, rightly proposed that erroneous expectations paralysed the person from taking action, and brought on depressive symptoms. Such models were called helplessness and hopelessness models of depression. These psychologists linked depression to a way of thinking that saw negative qualities of oneself as unchangeable and pervasive. The shackles of helplessness and hopelessness are powerful and demoralising. They paralyse our ability to solve problems, and may lead us to ruminate in our helplessness. People see and understand themselves through filters based upon past experiences. This helps them to deal with what is happening now. Clearly, if these filters are negatively based, they facilitate a negative view of current realities. Such people only look on the bad side of things, and adversity and bad experiences only reinforce their negative way of thinking. In later years, Beck also focused on personality types, especially those who based their self-esteem on things outside themselves as being vulnerable to depression. For example, if a person sees his self-worth in his job, and he loses his job, where does that leave him in terms of self-esteem? A person may value himself through achievement, but if he falls ill and cannot achieve, what happens to how he views himself? All his value has vanished, he feels worthless, and worthlessness can lead to depression. It is really important to build up one’s selfesteem, to feel it grow from within rather than have it based on external sources. It is about feeling good enough as a person and not because of wealth or achievement.
