Jokes My wife says I never listen.......or something like that.

Did you hear about the banker who was recently arrested for embezzling â‚Ź100,000 to pay for his daughter's college education? As the policeman, who also had a daughter in college, was leading him away in handcuffs, he said to the banker, "I have just one question for you. Where were you going to get the rest of the money?"

Little Tony was so happy to see his grandmother that he ran up and gave her a big hug. "I'm so happy to see you, granny. Now daddy will have to do that trick he's been promising to do!" His grandmother was curious. "What trick is that, sweetie?" The little guy grinned at her. "I heard daddy tell mammy that he would climb the walls if you came to visit us again!"

Marriage is like a deck of cards, you start off with 2 hearts and a diamond and after a few years all you want is a club and a spade

Why did the potato cross the road? He saw a fork up ahead.

"It's no good, sir," said the hopeless pupil to his English teacher. "I try to learn, but everything you say goes in both ears and out the other." "Goes in both ears and out the other?" asked the puzzled teacher. "But you only have two ears." "You see, sir? I'm no good at math, either."

A brunette, a redhead and a blonde get captured and are placed before a firing squad. They are about to be executed and the brunette says "Look...Hurricane" and points to her left while she gets away. The redhead girl says "Look...Tornado", points and gets away. Finally the blonde tries to do the same thing she says "FIRE"

Adam was walking around the Garden of Eden feeling very lonely, so God asked Adam, "What is wrong with you?" Adam said, "Lord, I don't have anyone to talk to." God said, "Then I will give you a companion, and she will be called a 'woman'. This person will cook for you and wash your clothes, she will always agree with every decision you make. She will bear your children and never ask you to get up in the middle of the night to take care of

them. She will not nag you, and will always be the first to admit she was wrong when you've had a disagreement. She will never have a headache, and will freely give 'love' and compassion whenever needed. She will never question your behaviour or the company you keep. She will support you and understand that you have important decisions to make throughout your life and don't have time for nonsense..." Adam asked God, "What will this woman cost?" God said, "An arm and a leg..." Adam said, "What can I get for just a rib?"

Facebook is like jail, you sit around and waste time, you write on walls and you get poked by people you don't know.

Two confirmed bachelors sat talking. Their conversation drifted from politics to cooking. "I got a cookbook once," said the first, "but I could never do anything with it." "Too much fancy cooking in it, eh?" asked the second. "You said it. Every one of the recipes began the same way - Take a clean dish and...."

For their anniversary, a couple went out for a romantic dinner. Their teenage daughters said they would fix a dessert and leave it waiting. When they got home, they saw that the dining room table was beautifully set with china, crystal and candles, and there was a note that read: "Your dessert is in the refrigerator. We are staying with friends, so go ahead and do something we wouldn't do!" " I suppose," the husband responded dryly, "we could clean the house."

System 10 is a scientific based Weight Loss programme designed to correct your metabolism faults. System 10 is rapidly becoming Ireland’s most popular weight loss plan and has a proven track record nationwide of people losing 1 stone and up to 2 sizes in one month. A good metabolism is critical to proper weight loss. With a good metabolism you burn more fat every hour, 24 hours a day. Nothing can beat that for amazing results. Because System 10 is a metabolism correction programme, once you reach your target weight you will keep the weight off. Based on extensive research by Limerick Dietician, Lecturer and Creator of System 10 David Mcdonagh, this is the only plan in the world to include the 3 essential keys to fixing your metabolism for the best and fastest loss ever. The 3 essential keys are caloric specific balanced food plans of normal, natural food, realistic exercise and correction of metabolism problems. The combination of these keys ensures that every pound you lose is pure fat (not water or muscle like on most plans). Any plan that does not have all 3 keys is not a genuine weight loss plan. It is a fad

plan that will bring you very limited weight loss results. Metabolism faults like sluggish thyroid [35% of adults], constipation [40% of adults], high blood sugar [50% of adults] and toxic liver [due to medication, smoking etc], can limit or stop your weight loss no matter how much dieting or exercise you do. We address all of the above metabolism faults. Exercise, especially toning is invaluable to weight loss because it speeds up the process of fat burning, (for every pound of muscle you have you burn 60 calories a day) makes you feel better and most important of all gets rid of inches that you cannot achieve through dieting alone. Lose weight without exercise and you end up a saggy mess! System 10 Weight Loss is suitable for men and women and is available in 3, 6 and 10 (lose up to 40 Ibs) Private weigh ins, constant tracking and motivation included on all plans. Clinic in Auburn Lodge, Ennis. Contact Liam on 087 142670 to get started or for more information.

Oxfam calling on the people of Tipperary to dust of their walking shoes Oxfam Ireland has launched TRAILTREKKER 2011, one of the world’s most ambitious team challenges involving a non-stop 100km or 50km trek through the MourneMountains to Carlingford. This walk is tough but whether you choose the 100km or the 50km trek the experience will be exhilarating. A unique feature of this year’s TRAILTREKKER is the introduction of the 50km trek. Choose your challenge and help change lives in developing countries.

Dr. Mark Hamilton, presenter of RTE’s Health of the Nation, has participated in TRAILTREKKER: “My team, How Long Will You Walk, completed the 100km trek. I would highly encourage anyone who enjoys personal and team challenges to take part in TRAILTREKKER – it is a truly unique and epic trek.”

Taking place on September 10th11th, the Oxfam TRAILTREKKER trail is a specially designed route that starts in Newcastle, Co. Down before traversing the MourneMountains, the Ring of Gullion and the CooleyPeninsula and finishing in the medieval village of Carlingford. This crossborder route encompasses some of Ireland’s most stunning landscapes and is steeped in Irish mythology.

Oxfam Ireland’s TRAILTREKKER is also part of a growing global phenomenon. There are now fifteen events in twelve different countries. Since TRAILTREKKER began in 1981 in Hong Kong, over 32,000 teams (128,000 individuals) have collectively walked over 11.5 million kilometres (the same distance as walking around the world 287 times!), becoming great ambassadors for Oxfam’s work and raising over €70 million.

TRAILTREKKER is now in its third year in Ireland and over the past two years it raised over

€700,000 towards Oxfam Ireland’s work, helping to make real and practical differences to the lives of people in the developing world. €700,000 is the equivalent of Oxfam Ireland’s entire livelihoods programme spend in Malawi and Uganda in 2010. These programmes include everything from supporting projects that increase agricultural production in sustainable ways, addressing the consequences of climate change, strengthening access to markets for small scale producers, espe-

cially women and working with people affected by HIV and Aids.

Oxfam Ireland’s Events Manager, Grace O’Neill says: “TRAILTREKKER will test your determination, stamina, dedication and camaraderie and anyone with a moderate level of fitness can train to take part. You’ll experience a massive sense of achievement, not only on a personal level but also as a team. Your trekking achievements will bring real change to some of the poorest communities in the world, as all the funds raised by TRAILTREKKER will enable Oxfam Ireland to carry out its work in east, central and southern Africa. Go on, choose your challenge and sign up today”.

For more details about signing up for TRAILTREKKER 2011, text “TREK” to 51500, call 01 6350 406 or visit www.oxfamirelan d.org/TRAILTRE KKER.

Tipperary Friends of Animals A few months ago, the Tipperary Friends of Animals opened up their first shop in Abbey Lane, Nenagh, at the back of the Hibernian Inn. People were extremely generous in supplying the shop with clothes, furniture, books, music, pictures, shoes, linen and nik-naks. The quality is very high and the prices are exceptionally reasonable, which is a blessing during this recession. After the care free days of the Celtic Tiger, every cent has come to be very precious and has to go very far. So if you are watching the pennies and looking for good quality and good value, pay a visit to the Tipperary Friends of Animals Shop in Abbey Lane and not only will you be scooping up great bargains, you will be helping a very worthy cause. They are open from Wednesdays to Saturday. With the recession hitting hard, people are very hard pressed to keep and feed their own animals and the Tipperary Friends of Animals are being asked to take on family pets as well as still trying

to save all the abandoned animals that are being found. To achieve this, money has to be raised and volunteers are constantly sought to help with fundraising. All that is asked is a couple of hours a year, small sacrifice to help alleviate the dreadful suffering of animals. To this end, there is a sponsored dog walk being held in Nenagh on 29th May, starting in Banba Square and around the Dark Road, a distance of about three miles. It is always a fun afternoon during which you meet like minded people and a wonderful array of dogs. Anyone interested in doing the Dog Walk, is asked to contact Linda on 086-8163707 for their Sponsored Dog Walk Card or can also collect one in the Sportsman’s Dream in Kenyon Street, Nenagh. It was Mahatma Gandhi that said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”.

Any One Can Be a Star, Paddy Casey at The Source The Source is delighted to announce that Paddy Casey will be making his first appearance at the Thurles venue on Friday 6th May. Famous for his great sing-along anthems like the smash hit Saints and Sinners, Paddy occupies a unique place on the Irish music scene. Sitting very happily in the singer/songwriter tradition that has blossomed in recent Ireland, Paddy has also enjoyed a popularity which seems to evade his contemporaries.

Things have gone from good to great recently for the former busker who supported U2 on their Vertigo tour and has had week long sold-out residencies at the Olympia in Dublin. America has started to open its doors following a sensational performance on The Late Show with David Letterman.

He is currently working on the follow up to his last Meteor Award winning album Addicted to Company (Part One). Paddy has a fantastic set planned mixing some of

his best known songs with exclusive sneak previews of some of his latest material. So this promises to be brilliant night of music.

Paddy Casey is at The Source Arts Centre on Friday 6th May at 8pm. Tickets €18 / €16 concession. For Bookings please call the Box Office on 0504 90204 or log on to www.thesourceartscentre.ie

Hard-hitting play ‘Five Kinds of Silence’ at Nenagh Arts Centre this weekend Orchard Theatre Company are working in conjunction with ADAPT Services to help raise funds and improve the public’s awareness of the abuse that is around us every day. Through the play ‘Five Kinds of Silence’ which was written by Shelagh Stephenson; the Company bring a voice to an issue that is not openly spoken about in Ireland. The piece tours to Nenagh this Saturday the 30th of April.

‘Five Kinds of Silence’ asks the audience why would a man or woman torture their own children? The main character Billy controls his wife and two adult daughters to the extent that they can’t leave the room without asking permission. He runs his family as a personal fiefdom, and the women are there to service him and his madness. He is violent, disturbed but also tragic, sad, a lost soul. One day his family shoots him dead. The play shows us a distorted world of madness, control and despair through the eyes of dead Billy and those of his family struggling to understand reality outside their stifling tomb. Winner of the 1996 Writers’ Guild Award for the Best Original Radio Play and the 1997 Sony Award for Best Original Drama, ‘Five Kinds

of Silence’ is the story of a family where control has become the driving force, where everything has its place and there are only rules, duties and punishments. ADAPT has a range of services for women survivors of domestic abuse and their children. By attending the performance of ‘Five Kinds of Silence’ you will be helping ADAPT to provide some of the following services: safe emergency refuge accommodation, free phone helpline, court preparation & accompaniment, advocacy & accompaniment to services, training & development opportunities and childcare support. ’Five Kinds of Silence’ plays at 8 p.m. on Saturday April 30th in Nenagh Arts Centre Ticket from 067 34900 or online at www.nenagharts.com

Beard of Zeus Win Buddy’s Got Talent A packed house witnessed a very exciting final of Buddy’s Got Talent last Friday night in Buddy’s Bar, Capparoe, which saw Borrisokane/Ballinderry band the Beard of Zeus crowned deserved overall winners. It was a thrilling final which saw 8 top class acts compete for the top prizes. First on stage was Michelle O Dwyer from Nenagh who got the event off to a high quality start with a great performance, accompanying herself on guitar. She was followed by Michael Lambe from Lorrha, who sang one of his own compositions and then finished with a great performance of Piano Man, accompanying himself on piano and harmonica. Next up was Greg Starr who gave his usual classy performance, starting with a beautiful rendition of Mr Bojangles and finishing with a rousing Nessun Dorma. Bringing the first half to a close was Bridget Maher from Roscrea. Bridget gave a lovely performance of Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue and a rousing rendition of the jazz standard Too Darn Hot. The second half commenced with Cian Morris who started with a song of his own, Supernatural Cover Girl, followed by a cover. He was in excellent form and also well accompanied by Brian Richardson on guitar. Next up was Harmony, 4 young girls from the Nenagh area, who gave us something unique with an acapella rendition of 2 current chart songs. Their unique arrangements and super harmonies were impressive. Next was the Beard Of Zeus who gave us White Winter Hymnal by the Fleet Foxes, and their own very unique take on the Beach Boys’ Barbara Ann. Closing the competition was Mikey Finn who once again gave an intimate and heartfelt performance of his two songs, accompanying himself on guitar.

The judges (Noel Ryan, Veronica Crowley, Andrew Walsh) retired to mark their sheets, and the audience filled in their voting cards, and we all waited with anticipation. Then came the moment, and the result was announced; in 3rd place and receiving €200 cash was Harmony. Second place went to Cian Morris, who received €300, and the winners who received €1000 cash and recording time in Earth Recording Studios, Nenagh, was The Beard Of Zeus. It would have been difficult for anyone to argue with the results, as any of the other acts could also have featured in the top 3, such was the standard. All 8 acts deserve great credit; they gave very professional and entertaining performances and can be proud of their achievement. Certainly Harmony could have a bright future, particularly if they stay together and vary their programme as they progress with their music. Cian Morris is already well known in North Tipp and is easily as good as anything we have seen on the All Ireland Talent Show; let’s hope he gets a break in the near future. The Beard of Zeus has to be one of the freshest and most entertaining bands around this area, with their unique take on every song they do. The simple mix of acoustic guitar, bass, and banjo works really well, but all 3 of them can sing and their harmonies are impressive. They also have the knack of choosing music that works for them and adding their own touch to it. We all look forward to the launch night of their CD which hopefully they will make as part of their prize. On behalf of the judges, Noel Ryan paid tribute to all the contestants, and thanked Joe Mulqueen for having the initiative to stage the competition and give up and coming talent this opportunity. It was a great success and best of luck to the winners, and all who took part.

White Gypsy Ruby Irish Red Ale Brewed in Templemore Irish red ale, red ale, or Irish ale gains its slightly reddish colour from the use of a small amount of roasted barley. The term red ale or red beer is used by brewers in countries other than Ireland; however the name Irish Red is typically used when roasted material is used. In the United States, the name can describe a darker amber ale, and some breweries may produce a “red” beer that is a lager with caramel colouring. Cuilan Loughnane is a native of Templemore who took up an interest in brewing while working in Vancouver in Canada during the 90’s. Cuilan came back to Ireland in 1997 and started a job as a brewing assistant in Dwan’s brewery in Thurles under English brew master David Jones. When Jones moved onto a brewery in Sweden, Cuilan took up the running of Dwan’s brewery. In 2001 Cuilan and his wife Sally set up the Shelta Beer Co. Ltd and obtained a lease from Bill Dwan for the brewery in Thurles.

task of moving a brewery and re-commissioning it was undertaken. Finally after 6 months the brewery was ready to go and duly open in August 2009. Initially contract work was undertaken to get the brewery up and running. However, Cuilan’s ambition has always been to brew a beer which would be widely available in the local area. Since the demise of Perry’s in Rathdowney in 1966 there has been no local ale available throughout North Tipperary. With this in mind the White Gypsy Brewery are now launching “Ruby” Irish red ale with the focus very much on brewing a good flavoursome beer.

Ruby Irish Red Ale started life in Dwan’s brewery in 1997 under the name Rich Ruby. It was a recipe created by the then Brew Master David Jones. In 1998 it won a gold medal at the Stockholm Beer and Whiskey festival. In 2000, the beer was entered into the International Industry Awards held in London, and won a Bronze Medal. The recipe was Over the next 3 years they ran a slightly tweaked to put a better very successful export business balance on the final flavour and and won many awards for their the beer went on to win 3 gold beers. Nenagh Mayor urges Economic War against banks and Government At the 1916 Commemoration on Easter Sunday in Nenagh, Mayor Seamie Morris, Sinn Fein Councillor, urged citizens to wage an economic war. Today we need to build handed over sovereignty won by the same alliances in the cause of a the people we commemorate here united Ireland. There has never to the IMF/EU/ECB without a shot been such a need for Republican fired and our new Government politics. The big questions of sovhave meekly and happily taken ereignty of people’s rights of citiover where FF and the Lowryites zenship are more relevant today left off by taking their orders from than they have been for many Frankfurt as opposed to the people years. that elected them. It is time to fight back against those that have betrayed the men and women who sacrificed themselves for this nation in 1916

Our political elite have time and time again acted against the interests of the Irish People. They have refused to take the democratic wishes of the people when we said no to the Nice and Lisbon treaties when at the insistence of their political masters in Europe we were threatened with Armageddon and forced to vote again. The electorate of Ireland have always had a healthy distrust of the whole European project and that is justified. European regulations are now having disastrous effects on people here in North Tipperary whether it is those that face financial ruin because of European Central Bank

We have had three reports into our banking Armageddon and not one person languishes is jail despite the incredible suffering that they inflicted on the innocent people of Ireland who are suffering because of their greedy actions. The same people run our banks the same bonuses are being paid and the same banking policies will take place as long as banks remain in private hands. They need to be fully nationalised and run on behalf of the people and the guilty bankers need to be prosecuted with their ill gotten gains stripped from them. Believe me if we allow FG/Labour to administer the pain that has been

set out for us in the IMF/ECB deal this country will collapse financially. We as a people need to start an Economic war against those that are misusing our taxes. We need to consider withholding our mortgage payments in solidarity of those that are being squeezed by financial institutions we need to encourage tax avoidance ( something I would never have considered encouraging before ) We need these things because people are suffering unjustly at the hands of Bank bullies and State bullies that are hounding people over debts with late night phone calls and threatening letters while the people that caused the economic collapse of this country get away scot free and the taxpayers are hounded into picking up the tab. The only thing that with concentrate the minds of the Government is the people coming together and refusing to pay taxes while the money is being handed over to the IMF/ECB to pay back the moneylenders of Europe. I would also encourage people to help out the protesters in Corrib Mayo who are trying to hold of the robbery of our Gas and Oil reserves which have the potential to help the people of this country build Hospitals and Schools and much revenue for our local councils. This is the frontline for the fight against economic treason inflicted on us by corrupt politicians.

Next month we have the visit of The Queen of England to Cashel invited by a council who used the unfortunate sickness of their Sinn

Fein Mayor to sneak through an invitation to the representative of a country who have inflicted terrible pain on their near neighbour. It would probably have been above the intelligence of the councillors to actually research the reason to the last visit of a British monarch to their town. Henry 11 came to Cashel in 1172 to effectively lay claim to Ireland which actually caused so much hardship on the Irish people over the following centuries trying to rid ourselves of their interference. So downtrodden have our political leaders become that we are willing to hand away our dignity in pursuit of a few extra euro in supposed extra tourist revenue. I feel that we would get far more respect and dignity if we grew as a nation a pair and actually took on the people that have inflicted so much pain on this proud country whether that be the IMF/ECB the Political elite, Shell or protesting against a monarch who represents both the political elite and interfering neighbours. The time for the Irish people to rise up has come around again lets honour the men and women of 1916 by taking on the political elite. Thank you

We the Citizens Independent initiative to help renew trust in public life We the Citizens, an independent national initiative aimed at showing how Ireland could benefit from citizens coming together in new forms of public decision-making, has been launched in Dublin. The objective is to help to renew democracy and to contribute towards the restoration of trust in public life, at this time of social and economic crisis in Ireland. The Chairman of We the Citizens, Fiach Mc Conghail, who is Director of the Abbey Theatre, told the launch that a national citizens’ assembly would be held in June to consider proposals on making the political institutions of the State better suited to serving citizens. The agenda of the assembly will be decided by seven citizen-led events around the country and by a nationwide poll, conducted by an independent polling company. 150 people, representing a cross-section of Irish society and who took part in the poll, would be invited to participate at the assembly. “All the political parties in the Oireachtas have made significant promises to lead and implement political reform and what ‘We the Citizens’ will promise to do is twofold,” said Mr Mac Conghail.

‘We the Citizens’ Executive Director, Caroline Erskine, said that the initiative was timely. “The depth of this crisis has brought with it a great opportunity to start afresh. To restructure. There is a mood for public mobilisation. People are ready to get involved in constructive, citizen-led action. To speak up for what’s important to them, to speak up for Ireland,” she said. “ We the Citizens plan to show some practical and productive ways of doing that.” The Professor of Politics in UCD, David Farrell, will lead a comprehensive academic study of the process and the outcomes. His research colleagues are Dr Jane Suiter of UCC, Dr Eoin O’Malley of DCU and Dr Elaine Byrne of TCD. There will also be a high-level international advisory board of academics with experience of best practice in relation to citizens’ assemblies in other countries. Professor Farrell told the launch that citizens’ assemblies have been used successfully in other countries. “They are a new and innovative way of allowing citizens to be actively involved in taking important decisions that affect our daily lives. Citizens are given the opportunity to be informed, to consider and debate all side of an argument: they are able then to take decisions on what are often quite complex issues,” he said. “Citizens’ assemblies are a tried and tested method of giving citizens the opportunity to engage directly in important decisions about their own political system.” “I have some personal experience of this, having participated as an expert witness to a number of them (in British Columbia, Ontario and the Netherlands), and I’m delighted that we have the opportunity to demonstrate how this method can also work here”, added Professor Farrell.

“We will maintain the pressure on our politicians to change the way we are governed in this Republic. We will also show that a bottom-up approach can support a better and more productive citizen engagement in creating public policy,” said Mr Mac Conghail. “Before the Dáil breaks for the summer we will demonstrate to the government and all the political parties that this is a proven way to reconnect Irish citizens to politics to the benefit of the country as a whole.” The Chairperson announced that the citizens’ events leading up to the national assembly would take place during May and June in Kilkenny, Cork, Galway, Athlone, Letterkenny and Dublin. We the Citizens would be organising the events but not setting the agenda for them. The discussion would be highly-participatory and led by the citizens themselves.

We the Citizens is being steered by a Board of people who have distinguished themselves as Irish citizens across the private, public and NGO sectors and who are giving their time and expertise, entirely pro bono. We the Citizens is being organised in association with the Irish Universities Association the representative body for the seven Irish universities. IUA Chief Executive, Ned Costello, said that the Association was glad to give its endorsement and support for the initiative. “This is an important contribution to national debate on the future of our political system and processes. The joint involvement of academia and society in that dialogue underlines the value which the universities place on community engagement”, he said. We the Citizens is funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies.

Enrico Caruso (1873 - 1921) was an italian opera singer and one of the best known public figures at the beginning of the 20th Century. He was the best selling artist of his time. In April 1906 he launched a new season at the San Francisco Opera that brought the house down with his performance as Don Jose in Carmen. The next morning, the whole city collapsed..... Caruso & the Quake chronicles the italian Tenor's escape from the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, combining beautiful story telling with live opera from Puccini and Rossini and features favourites like 'O sole mio'. Admission: €16 & €12

As part of the Bealtaine 2011 celebrations and sponsored by the South Tipperary Arts Office, Fruitcake, written by Alice Barry, starts off as a cookery demonstration but is in fact an account of one woman’s life and how each ingredient reminds her of past memories and decisions made which ultimately changed the course of her life. Even though some lessons came late she now lives a fruitful, productive life because of this. Funny and poignant, this play has something for everyone. Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and haste, And remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even the dull & ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud & aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain & bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing future of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Score For Tourism! Tourism Ireland To Capitalise On UEFA Europa League Final Fans of two of Europe’s top soccer teams are set to descend on Dublin on 18 May, when the city’s Aviva Stadium plays host to the 2011 UEFA Europa League final. With huge exposure through the media in Europe and elsewhere around the world – an estimated 40 million football fans tuned in to last year’s final in Hamburg – this high profile game provides Tourism Ireland with a fantastic opportunity to highlight the island of Ireland as a wonderful holiday destination, as well as a top location for sporting events. Tourism Ireland has put in place a busy promotional programme, in advance of 18 May, to capitalise on the tourism potential the game offers, targeting football fans in tourism markets around Europe – including Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. Activity includes a major social media campaign through Facebook, targeting Tourism Ireland’s 150,000 fans across Europe; it features a fantastic competition to win a trip to Dublin, including tickets to the UEFA Europa League final, as well as regular posts and mini-blogs about Dublin and the game. An eNewsletter, highlighting the game and the competition, will be distributed to the Tourism Ireland database of more than 400,000 subscribers across Europe. With up to 30,000 football fans expected to travel here for the game, a specially created web page on discoverireland.com will encourage them to extend their visit, with plenty of suggestions and ideas for

things to do and see in and around Dublin. And for the visiting international journalists, a Tourism Ireland factsheet on Dublin will help them find their way around the city. Also, film footage of Dublin and Ireland will be provided to accredited media for their stories before or during the game. Commenting on the importance of large sporting events like the UEFA Europa League final, Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “Sports-related tourism has emerged as a very significant element of the global travel business in recent years – a multimillion euro market with a huge potential for countries who position themselves correctly. Previous high profile soccer events, such as the visit to Dublin of Real Madrid in 2009 and Villarreal in 2010, have provided Tourism Ireland with a wonderful opportunity to highlight Ireland. The UEFA Europa League Final is another ‘hook’ for us to leverage, helping us to reach a wide audience of potential holidaymakers in key markets across Europe and putting Dublin and Ireland in the spotlight. “As well as the millions of people everywhere who will watch the match on TV, up to 30,000 football fans are expected to travel to Dublin, to see their football heroes in the flesh, delivering significant economic benefits to Dublin and Ireland. A large media contingent will also travel here to cover the game, which will help to showcase Dublin and Ireland in a very positive way to a TV audience of an estimated 40 million people.”

Songs Danny Boy Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying 'tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come you back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'tis I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. And if you come, when all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me I simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

Cashel of the Hills My native place of matches grace, what charms can equal thine? Let greater men words sweeter pen to sing your praise than mine; Thy pastures fair and gardens rare which florid fragrance fills, Thy shady nooks and laughing brooks-sweet Cashel of the hills. Slopes steep and green can here be seen, the work of nature’s hands; And fields as fair, I do declare, as e’er the breezes fanned; And placid floods and waving woods and silver sparkling rills, And pleasing dells and holy wells in Cashel of the hills. And fair Newtown today looks down like a mother on its young; Defusing light and virtue bright her faithful ones among, Who in the past stood firm and fast and bore their share of ills. And true are still to Erin and will, in Cashel of the hills. Here men were known to hold their own, those rural homesteads grand; And likewise fight to win their right to this long-plundered land; In Land League days they fanned the blaze described by abler quills, They did not fail but faced the jail in Cashel of the hills. Here maids are fair beyond compare, and Irish, heart and hand; They can be seen to wear the green-they’re lovers of their land; In Cornadough some years ago, their valour gave us thrills, When in that fight they conquered White in Cashel of the hills.

Her new autobiography, How the Light Gets In, has rightly received a lot of publicity because she talks frankly about living with depression. In her introduction, McEvoy explains why she has written this book and how she manages every day. The focus is very much on depression, what it is, and how to cope, and seen through the life of Mary McEvoy and her personal experience. For this reason, the book is not a traditional autobiography, although it can be read as such. Instead of telling a straightforward narrative of her life, McEvoy looks at her depression through the prisms that she has identified such as family, loss, happiness, and ageing. Easy to read, How the Light Gets In will give McEvoy fans an insight into the life of the television star they admire, the general public an insight into what it is like to live with depression, and people with depression some ideas about how to cope day-to-day, in the moment.

Mary McEvoy’s new biography, How the Light Gets In, provides great insight into what it is like to live with and survive depression. AEOS 2 Scheme Must be Improved on to Maintain Interest-IFA IFA Rural Development Chairman Tom Turley said the AgriEnvironment Programme is in danger of disintegrating as a result of the watered down AEOS 2 scheme which the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has introduced. “The Minister must restore the maximum payment of €5,000 for 10,000 farmers as this is the only way to ensure that the AEOS 2 scheme has a meaningful impact.”

Mr. Turley said great progress has been made over the past 15 years through farmers participating in environmental works on their farms which has had huge benefit to the environment and the rural economy. The watered down AEOS 2 scheme is a severe blow to farmers who have been committed to the Agri-Environment Programme and the likelihood now is that uptake will reduce.

The IFA Rural Development Chairman said 10,000 farmers who are finishing REPS 3 face a very uncertain future and many will not see the new scheme as a viable option. On the AEOS 1 scheme Mr. Turley called for all payments due for 2010 to be made immediately. It is estimated that €8m is due to about 8,600 farmers who got into last year’s scheme.

In relation to the 400 farmers whose plans were rejected, IFA is advising farmers to appeal. Already, 150 farmers who have appealed to the Department of Agriculture have succeeded in getting into the scheme as they had Natura land on rented ground for less than 5 years and did not require a sustainable management plan. IFA is advising farmers in similar situations to appeal as this will ease the pressure for places on the AEOS 2 scheme.

Counselling Depression By Jim O’Shea I would now like to have a closer look at the question of comorbidity i.e. where depression is accompanied by one or more other complaints. Of course, comorbidity makes a complicated complaint even more complex and difficult to understand. In other words there is a wide variation in the severity of depression that people present with. The first thing that research shows is that comorbidity increases the severity and length of depressive episodes. Up to as many as 75% of people presenting with depression, also suffer from at least one other complaint. Paul Gilbert in his wonderful book, Depression. The Evolution of Powerlessness explains that depression, which is preceded by or accompanies other disorders, is called secondary depression. Primary depression is not preceded by any other psychiatric or physical complaints. Comorbidity should be distinguished from the masking or disguising of depression by physical problems such as joint aches, headaches, indigestion, or perhaps workaholism or other excessive behaviours such as non-stop shopping or thrill-seeking. Research shows that in the U.S. 84% of people presenting with depression had at least one other complaint. The most common comorbid complaints are anxiety, panic, social phobia and posttraumatic stress conditions. There is a very close relationship between anxiety and depression. While they are distinct complaints they are very much interwoven, and are difficult to separate. Depression can also be comorbid with substance addiction. Depressed people who are misusing substances become worn out, have high relapse, and often become homeless. People who abuse substances are also far more likely than the general public to get depression. Some psychological complaints are also comorbid with depression. The American psychiatrists Jon Grant and Marc Potenza, both experts in gambling addiction, point to a study that shows a connection between gambling addiction and depression. As might be expected, there is also a close link between Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression. This is very clear to me when I look back at how I and my family were after the death of my child. Our entire family suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and depression was all pervasive. The story of this trauma and depression can be seen in our book, When a Child Dies. Footsteps of a Grieving Family. Of course, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is not confined to bereavement, but to all types of trauma. For example, rape evokes a high level of PTSD and comorbid depression. PTSD is an anxiety disorder following a traumatic event.

As mentioned above, physical diseases are also important in the context of depression. Their symptoms sometimes mask depression. The psychologist, Christopher Dickens, warns that it is easy to underestimate how powerful depression is in the context of physical diseases in contributing to the death of a sufferer. This is a very sobering thought, and alerts us to the deadly danger of severe depression. In recent years much research is being directed at this area, which has shown that there are medical diseases that increase the risk of depression, and it is advisable that both the disease and the depression be treated during the rehabilitation period. Such diseases include diabetes, heart disease, and HIV/AIDS. Other diseases which may cause symptoms of depression are epilepsy, thyroid problems, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain trauma Lyme disease (an inflammatory disease caused by bacteria from the bite of a deer tick (common in the U.S.), syphilis and Parkinson’s disease, to name but a few. The Los Angeles based psychologist, Prentiss Price, has written some interesting stuff on this dimension of depression, and, for example, looks at research showing that diabetes doubles the risk of depression, and that the chance of becoming depressed increases as diabetes complications worsen. Interestingly, there is also some proof that depression can also lead to diabetes. There is evidence, too, for the same conclusion in relation to heart disease, and it has been argued that depression can lead to low bone density. Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles. Ph.087-8211009 www.jimoshea.net. Jim O’Shea’s book ‘When a child dies. Footsteps of a Grieving Family’ is published by Veritas. The royalties from this book will go the the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin
