Jokes A noted psychiatrist was a guest at a blonde gathering, and his hostess naturally broached the subject in which the doctor was most at ease. "Would you mind telling me, Doctor," she asked, "how you detect a mental deficiency in somebody who appears completely normal?" "Nothing is easier," he replied. "You ask a simple question which anyone should answer with no trouble. If he hesitates, that puts you on the track."

“Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make it wag its tail” Richard Friedman "What sort of question?" "Well, you might ask him, 'Captain Cook made three trips around the world and died during one of them. Which one?' The blonde thought a moment, then said with a nervous laugh, "You wouldn't happen to have another example would you? I must confess I don't know much about history."

A white-haired old man walked into a jewelry store on a Friday, with a beautiful young lady at his side. "I'm looking for a special ring for my girlfriend," he said. The jeweler looked through the stock and took out an outstanding ring priced at €5,000. "I don't think you understand-I want something very unique," the man said. At that, our now very excited jeweler went and fetched our special stock from the safe. "Here's one stunning ring at €40,000." The girls eyes sparkled, and the man said that he would take it. "How are you paying?" asked our jeweler. "I'll pay by cheque; but of course the bank will want to make sure that everything is in order, so I'll write a cheque and you can phone the bank tomorrow, and then I'll fetch the ring on Monday." Monday morning, our very disappointed jeweler phoned the man. "You lied, there's no money in that account." "I know, sorry, but can you imagine what a FANTASTIC weekend I had?"

A teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honour thy father and thy mother," she asked, "is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little boy answered, "Thou shall not kill!"
The Pope dies and goes to heaven. When he gets there, Saint Peter shows him to his new quarters which turn out to be a tiny one bedroom apartment. The Pope is horrified and wants to know why he doesn't have the penthouse apartment, which is huge. Saint Peter informs him that the resident of the penthouse is a politician. "A politician," says the Pope. "But I'm the Pope, surely I'm more important." "With respect Sir," says Saint Peter, "We have lots of Pope's up here, but we only have ONE politician!"
An airplane flew into a violent thunderstorm and was soon swaying and bumping around the sky. One very nervous lady happened to be sitting next to a priest and turned to him. "Can't you do something?" she demanded angrily. "I'm sorry ma'am," the priest said gently, "I'm in sales, not management."

Glas Green Roofs Developing an alternative vegetation cover for green roofs. Since 2009 Landtech Soils has been working in conjunction with the University of Limerick with a view to developing suitable plant mixtures for a range of green roof environments that will prove to be a viable and attractive cover crop - a sedum blanket - often the only option on offer. In our ‘Built’ environment that does not have a culture of green roof developments - this project will develop a vegetative blanket, based around the selection of blends of combinations of sedum varieties, wildflowers and grasses, combined with an innovative and novel growing and management process to suit these mixtures and local growing conditions. In many instances, particularly where a green roof is to be overlooked, many people feel that the sedums are not the most attractive option and would like to have the option of having an alternative vegetative cover for their green roof. The predominance of sedums as the predominant plant for use on green roofs has it origins in the fact the the concept of the modern green roof developed primarily in Germany and the sedum plant was the most suitable for that environment.

In the UK & Ireland - located on the edge of Europe, with amore moderate climate and higher rainfall, it is feasible to consider alternative vegetative plants as a green roof cover crop. As well as considering alternative plant species, this collaborative project will also look at the option of the use of selected Mychorrizal Fungi mixes - to replace the use of chemical fertilisers - plus the addition of Biochar - which on-going work in the University of Limerick has demonstrated to ameliorate growing conditions of certain growing plants. The outcome of the project will be the development of a vegetative blanket in conjunction with a suitable light weight substrate, for use in the development of green roofs, which will be supplied ready to roll out as an instant vegetation layer.

Congratulations to the Tipperary minor hurling team and management on their comprehensive defeat of Cork in the Munster championship semi-final playoff at Semple Stadium on Sunday. It was the 62nd encounter at minor level between the 2 counties and Tipperary’s 36th win. Cork have won 22 times and there have been 4 draws. Tipp’s next game will be the Munster semi-final against Clare at Semple Stadium on Friday, June 24 next. Clare defeated Tipp in last year’s Munster championship so this is likely to be a keenly fought game with reports that the Banner county has a good team again. Tipp improved from their first round defeat to Waterford and no doubt the opportunity of qualifying for a Munster final will be a great motivator to improve further. Many of the Tipp players will now be focussing on exams and we wish them every success in both their preparations and the exams.
packages will be announced in the next week. These will include special discounts for groups of tickets purchased through clubs.
Munster Minor Football Championship Good luck to the Tipperary minor footballers and management for their Munster semi-final clash with Kerry at Semple Stadium on Wednesday evening, May 18 at 7pm. Extra time will apply in the event of a draw. Cork will play Clare in the other semi-final in Cusack Park Ennis also on May 18.

Well done also to the Football Board for organising it so well.

Welcome Barack Obama
A History of President Barack Obama’s Ancestors - The Kearneys By Martin Gosling Moneygall is a small village located on the Offaly/Tipperary border, with a population of 298 people according to the 2006 census. Moneygall has a Roman Catholic Church, five shops, a post office, a national school, a Garda station, and two pubs. But this small unassuming village in rural Ireland has quite a substantial claim to fame; US President Barack Obama’s ancestors originate from the village. President Barack Obama’s Irish links to Moneygall came to light in 2007, when Cannon Stephen O’Neill from Moneygall discovered the link. On St. Patrick’s day this year, Obama announced that he plans to visit Moneygall, home of his ancestors, the Kearney’s, on his state visit to Ireland in May.

The Irish Parliament was abolished with the Act of Union in 1801 creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, so that MPs elected in Ireland now sat in Westminster. The political establishment moved from Dublin to London, and as they did so, they kept town houses in London during the sitting of Parliament. The market for wigs at this time would have been predominantly among these elite, and because these elite would not be in Dublin then there would be no market for wigs whatsoever. Another cause for the decline in fortune of this line of Kearney’s was the very success of the The Kearney’s were a protestant fami- Dublin Kearney’s, Michael Kearney d. ly of Gaelic Irish origin, originating 1762 invested his profits in property in from Tipperary. Ten previous American Presidents had Irish roots - that is nearly onefourth of the American Presidents. The first was Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, whose parents were born in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. The great grandfather of the eleventh president, James K. Polk came from Co. Donegal. His name was William Pollock and is believed to have changed his name to Polk on reaching America. The fifteenth president was James Buchanan whose father was born in Co. Donegal, while the great grandmother of the 18th president, Ulysses S. Grant was born in Northern Ireland. William McKinley's great-great-great-grandfather was born in Ireland in 1705. McKinley was the 25th president, while the grandfather of the 28th president, Woodrow Wilson was born in Strabane, Co. Down. The most famous of course, was John F. Kennedy, the 35th president,
whose paternal great-great grandfather was born in Dunganstown, Co. Wexford and his paternal great-great grandmother was born in Owenduff, Co. Wexford. His maternal great-great grandfather was born in Bruff, Co. Limerick and his maternal great-great grandmother in Co. Cavan. The 37th president, Richard Nixon was descended from an Irishman born in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim in 1777 while another ancestor was born in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. Of course, we had to have a Co. Tipperary President and that was Ronald Reagan whose great-grandfather came from Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary and his great-grandmother also came from Ireland. President Clinton also claimed Irish roots as the parents of his great grandmother were born in Ireland. And finally, we get to Barack Obama, our Co. Offaly President.

Tipperary All Ireland Champions In the U16A Championship, Tipperary scored 2-08 against Kilkenny’s 0-13 After narrowly losing the previous two finals Tipperary finally clinched the u16A All Ireland Camogie title with a victory over rivals Kilkenny in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick on Saturday 7th May. Tipperary played against a strong wind in the first half and were first to create a score when Cliodhna Ryan’s shot on goal missed by a whisker in the first couple of minutes. Kilkenny came back and scored three points without reply before Tara Kennedy replied with two points in two minutes followed by a point by Leah Mckeogh. The scores were level at three points each after 14 minutes with Tipperary battling very hard against a strong and unpredictable wind. Miriam Walsh from Kilkenny had a tremendous game in mid-field and she scored a further three points from play. However, Tipperary responded with style with frees from Caoimhe Maher and Tara Kennedy to keep Tipperary very much in the game. Although Kilkenny scored four more points before half-time, it doesn’t do justice to the Tipperary backline who repelled numerous attacks from the Kilkenny team and without their strength, speed and experience the score at half-time could well have been much higher. The half time score was Tipperary 0.05 to Kilkenny 0.10. Tipperary came out in the second half to do business and by the end of the first minute the margin of five points had already been closed by a great point from Leah Mckeogh. Tipperary were on a roll and Kilkenny were at the pin of their collar to hold them back. Kilkenny were put under constant pressure by the Tipperary mid-field and forwards and it paid off in the 34th minute. Tremendous play by Cliodhna Ryan pulled three Kilkenny defenders to her – when all the focus was on Cliodhna, she slipped one of the finest hand passes to Jenny Grace who blasted the sliothar into the back of the net in an unstoppable goal – all before ten minutes of second half play. At this stage, Tipperary started to introduce more of their panel and began to move their players around in a tactical and strategic move to keep Kilkenny under pressure. This worked very well within three minutes a dominant Tipper-
ary scored two more points - a great free by Caoimhe Maher, followed closely with another point by Tara Kennedy. Kilkenny were struggling to contain Tipperary at this stage and the pressure was all on them to keep the forwards out. The pressure paid off and Mairead Teehan made a fantastic run from the centre of the field to give Tipperary its second goal with a great shot in to the back of the net in the 40th minute. Tipperary didn’t get all its own way and the backs had to work extremely hard to keep Kilkenny at bay. They were very ably led by captain Jenny Logue, Julie-Anne Burke, Cianna Walsh and player of the match Anne Eviston who fought for every ball and brought every bit of experience and strength they had to making sure Tipperary stayed ahead from then on. Midway through the second half an outstanding save, for what was almost certainly a goal, by goalie Sarah Coonan kept Kilkenny out. Kilkenny scored in the last minute of normal time to bring the gap to only one point but Tipperary held the line and made sure the ball was in the Kilkenny goal area for the last two minutes of the match in what was a tense but thrilling end to a fantastic game between two great teams. This was a team effort with every player contributing and playing to their very best – a team that we will no doubt hear more about in the future. In the end, Tipperary deservedly lifted the trophy to great applause, cheers and even some tears. Tim Maher Tipperary’s manager said after the game “we knew going in to the second half we had a good chance to win if we used the wind to our advantage and with a very strong bench to bring on we did just that” Tipperary panel: Sarah Coonan, JulieAnn Burke, Jenny Logue (captain),Alana Morris, Cianna Walsh, Anne Eviston, Laura Loughnane, Caoimhe Maher, Mairead Teehan, Megan Ryan, Leah McKeogh, Tara Kennedy, Gillian McKenna, Jenny Grace, Cliodhna Ryan, Louise Delaney, Rosemary Hanafin, EdelO’ Dwyer, Elaine Murphy, Claire Ryan, Amanda Egan, Aideen Hogan, Shauna Tooher, Roisin Ryan, Claire Kearns, Mairead Eviston, Cara Cottam, Aileen Duggan, Amy Crosse, Shauna Curtin ,Niamh Gallagher, Emer Cahill, Kora Kerrane Niamh Tracey.

Queen Elizabeth’s Visit to Ireland The Queen of England and her husband Prince Philip will visit Ireland for three days on May 17. The programme of events will include a formal welcome for the couple at the Áras from President Mary McAleese, a courtesy call to Government Buildings to meet the Taoiseach, and a State dinner at Dublin Castle. Both the Queen and President McAleese will deliver speeches at the castle. The Royal visit will also take in events at Trinity College, Croke Park, the National War Memorial Gardens at Islandbridge, and a trip to the Guinness Storehouse. A keen follower of horse racing, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will also visit the Irish National Stud in Kildare before moving on to Cashel in Tipperary. The Queen and her husband Prince Philip are expected to visit the Rock of Cashel. The Queen is also rumoured to pay a visit to the world famous Coolmore Stud near Fethard. Deputy Tom Hayes has
by Martin Gosling
stated that “The Queen’s visit will be a huge boost for the county”. The Queen and her husband will then move on to visit Cork. Cork City Council has planned to spend €250,000 on a facelift for the city’s English Market for the Queen’s visit. Lord Mayor of Cork An event will also take place at the British Embassy in Dublin, hosted by ambassador Julian King. Westlife and X-Factor contestant Mary Byrne are among the acts to perform for Queen Elizabeth during an evening celebrating fashion, music and theatre in an unknown venue in Dublin’s docklands on the last evening of the Queen’s State visit. The event is being held by the British ambassador to Ireland on behalf of the Queen as a “return event” which the visiting country hosts during State visits. The Taoiseach has said that the vast majority of Irish people will welcome very warmly the Queen to Ireland.
Tipp Rally raises 20% more in 2011 There is little doubt that this year’s Tipperary Vintage & Custom Rally along with the Trip Thru Tipp bike run both held at Tipperary Racecourse was a tremendous success raising €24,449 for charity which is an amazing 20% increase on the previous year. Naturally the fine weather was a big factor but without the hard work and dedication of the committee and volunteers the event simply would not have happened at all. The organisers are naturally delighted with the result and the chairman of the committee, Jack Leonard, would like to express the groups warmest gratitude and appreciation to all those who sponsored and supported the weekends event. These include Bill Daly and Denis Kilnane as well as the Tipperary Town Facebook group of traders who kindly donated many prizes for various raffles. Without doubt the biggest prize of all was the MGB GT donated by Ger
Finnan car sales of Tipperary and won by Paddy Leedy of Cavan. The generosity of many other businesses in the town cannot go unremarked either with both Burns Pet Nutrition and Arra Veterinary clinic encouraging the dog show which is growing into a very popular attraction indeed. Other organisations that came along to make the day such a winner were the Army and their show of weaponry, Gerry Humphreys with his aerobatic display, the model flying club spooking the crowd with their highly entertaining flying witch and the off road club and their jeeps. This year also saw the first showing of modified and custom vehicles with some impressive work on display as was the case with all the vintage and classic vehicles present. All in all it was a tremendous weekend and the organisers look forward to a busy year preparing the next rally.
TippNorth.com, A New Website Dedicated to Increasing Political Transparency in North Tipp A new political website has been launched in Co. Tipperary called TippNorth.com. The creator of the website, Paddy Ryan, stated the disconnect between elected representative and the electorate, as one of his main motivations for creating the website. Ryan states “the goal of this website is to be the first of its kind in the country, offering an easy, assessable way for members of the electorate to find out what the people who represent them, have achieved in recent months”. Ryan has also stated that his love for politics and current affairs were also a major driving force in his desire to create this website. Paddy Ryan has also sent each elected representative in Tipperary North an email, request-
ing their participation in submitting material for the website. Ryan expressed his desire cooperation to be forthcoming, “I am aware that our elected representatives are working tirelessly for us on a day to day basis. Each Councillor and TD will have their own profile, so at the next election, the electorate shall be easily be able to see what you have achieved. It will bring accountability to the offices which they hold, and will be an extremely positive step forward” The website was launched at 9am this morning, and already boasts over 100 unique visits. Paddy Ryan welcomes submissions for TippNorth.com. Interested parties should email info@tippnorth.com
Song The Pride of Tipperary There are scores of pretty Irish girls from Cork to Donegal But the prettiest and the neatest and the sweetest of them all Is a charming little colleen, who is neither short nor tall She’s the pride of all the boys in Tipperary. Her eyes are bits of heaven that were dropped in Erin’s Isle She has a captivating, aggravating sort of style And she looks at you with such a sweet intoxicating smile Faith you can’t be sober long in Tipperary. Chorus Oh sure there’s not another girl could put your heart in such a whirl You couldn’t keep from loving her if you look at her at all It’s the blue bewitching eyes of her and the neat convenient size of her That makes the sweetest prize of her, from Cork to Donegal. Her father keeps a little farm a mile beyond the town And once a week, on market day, you’ll see her driving down As dainty as a duchess in her little hat and gown Troth there’s not a finer sight in Tipperary. The boys get wild about her and there’s one or two in gaol For everywhere she wanders there is fighting in her trail And when she goes a-milking there are two to hold the tail Of every little cow in Tipperary. It’s a treat to see her walking, round the farm on any day For the beasts they all adore her and whenever she’s away Sure the little pigs get love-sick and the hens refuse to lay For she’s loved by one and all in Tipperary. And if you don’t believe me, then I’ll tell you what to do Just stop a Tipperary man and say it isn’t true And as soon as you’re fit to travel, if the doctor pulls you through You can take the shortest road from Tipperary.

Schoolboy Football - North Tipp U12s into All Ireland Final NTSFL’s u12 team produced one of the biggest shocks in schoolboy football by beating a well fancied Donegal team in the semi final of the SFAI Cashin Cup in Brickfields on Sunday May 1st. In front of a large crowd and with the weight of expectation on their shoulders the Tipp boys started slowly and Donegal enjoyed much of the possession early on. David Kelly marshaled the home defence impeccably and when his line was
breached Tommy Holland was in fine form in the Tipp goal producing one breathtaking save when a goal looked certain. From the resulting corner however the opening goal came as Tipp failed to deal with a wicked cross and the Donegal poacher was left with the easiest of tap-ins. Tipp aided with a strong breeze were in need of some inspiration and up stepped Templemore’s wonderkid Stevie Nolan to produce a moment of brilliance just before the break. After a lovely build up down the left the ball was centered to Nolan who stroked a sweet 30 yard shot into the top corner. Into the second half and all the inhibitions were gone as Tipp stroked the ball around beautifully against a stiff breeze. Dylan Kennedy stepped up with a superb performance. David Kelly was simply impassable at the back aided by Josh McCarthy and the tireless Jason McKenna. Nolan however was imperious in midfield and with 12 minutes remaining pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the visitors box to calmly dispatch in the bottom corner.
Jason McKenna takes a throw for NorthTipp in their 2-1 win over Donegal Schoolboys at Brickfields Nenagh on Sunday week last.
The Nenagh crowd erupted and the home side sensed it could be their day. Tipp had their noses

The final whistle was greeted with great scenes as the Tipp boys celebrated a famous victory & Donegal much to their credit were very gracious in defeat. Next up is a repeat of the Munster final v Waterford as Tip look to avenge their penalty shoot-out defeat. Tom Hayes has welcomed a number of improvements to the access to and promotion of Cahir Abbey as a result of Brian Hayes T.D.’s visit to the Abbey. “As Minister of State in the Department of Finance, Brian Hayes T.D. is also Minister with Responsibility for the O.P.W. and I was very pleased to be able to arrange for him to visit Cahir Abbey and to meet with concerned parties about the preservation and promotion of the Abbey,” Tom Hayes T.D. said. “There have been ongoing concerns about the opening hours of the site, but the Minister was able to confirm that the site is to be opened by O.P.W. staff every weekday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.,” Tom Hayes T.D. said. “In terms of promotion of the Abbey, a number of measures have been agreed by the Minister of State. To ensure that local visitors and tourists alike will be aware of the opening hours, notices are to be placed on the OPW website, on-site in the Abbey, in Cahir Castle and in Swiss Cottage. The guides working in Cahir Castle and Swiss Cottage will inform visitors to these sites of the Abbey’s existence and opening hours from now on. A display board providing information on the history of the Abbey is to be made available by the OPW inside the building. The OPW will
Arriving from Cologne, the German Orchestral group Chamber Philharmonic Europe performs with awardwinning soloist Pawel Zuzanski (Violin) and Kirill Gusarov (Trumpet) in a special concert this week in Nenagh. erect an extra signpost from the Tipperary Road pointing towards the Abbey. “The OPW are strongly supportive of improved NRA signage to designate Cahir as a Heritage Town from Junction 10 or 11 on the motorway. The NRA have already given Kilkenny Castle similar road signage from the Motorway at the Urlingford Junction, and this will be very important in informing people of the town’s historical amenities.” “It is also planned that the tower house over the Abbey’s church will be accessible for visitors.” “I was very pleased to have been able to bring Minister Brian Hayes to Cahir Abbey to resolve these issues. The Abbey is beautiful building and its importance historically needs to be recognised. The changes in access, promotion and signage will all help to make the Abbey the attraction it deserves to be and add to its status as a Heritage Town,” Tom Hayes T.D. said.
Colin Murphy for The Source It’s time to get your laughing gear in order as The Source is about to open its stage to one of Ireland’s funniest men. Colin Murphy is in town for one of his sideways looks at life and all things current. Notorious for his rantings on “life, the universe and everything”, Colin has made a great impression on the public at large through his many television appearances, including the brilliant Blizzerd of Odd, which he shaped and pioneered, through his six year stint on The Panel and more recently on The Blame Game. The man mixes northern charm with a rapier sharp wit enabling him to see the absurdity in everyday life and giving a surreal view of current affairs. Colin has been described as one of the real powerhouses of the recent generation of Irish comedians. His stand-up show has an energy all of its

own and his rubber faced expressions are matched only by his manic contortions. If you have only experienced him as a television personality, this show is a must for you as it gives vent to the real creative side of his personality. His last sell-out show at The Source was legendary as he recalled growing up in the ‘80’s, the sexual arousal of car ferries and the surprises that can lurk under big jumpers. This show promises to be even more hilarious as Colin Murphy returns to what he does best, Stand-up. Colin Murphy is at The Source Arts Centre on Saturday 14th May at 8.00pm. Tickets €20 / €18 concession. For Bookings please call the Box Office on 0504 90204 or log on to www.thesourceartscentre.ie

How to Stay Young 1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay them. 2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. 3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. 4. Enjoy the simple things. 5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. 6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive. 7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keep-
sakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. 8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help. 9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the shop, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is. 10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

Prayers The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. This time I ask You this very special one (mention favour). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. E.R. The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. Novena to St. Martha St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith. As proof of my affection and faith, I offer thee this light, which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties and throught the great favours thou didst enjoy when the Saviour was lodged in thy house, intercede for my family that we be provided for in our necessities. I ask of thee St. Martha, to overcome all difficulties as thou didst overcome the dragon which thou hadst at thy feet. One Our Father, three Hail Marys and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentiobns of spreading devotion to Martha. This miraculous saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended, no matter how difficult. Grateful thanks for favours to be received. L.C. Counselling Depression By Jim O’Shea Parkinson’s Disease is an extremely unpleasant condition, and it has been estimated that as many as half the people in the U.S., who have Parkinson’s, also have depression. There is no reason to believe that Ireland is any different. Up to 27% of people who get a stroke also develop depression, with episodes as long as one year. When you think about it, the after effects of a bad stroke can leave a person semi-paralysed and bring on feelings of worthlessness and powerlessness. It is also known that 1 in 3 survivors of a heart attack get depression. This is understandable in the context of biological symptoms of depression mentioned above. The prevalence of heart problems, especially among men, is alarming, and the probability that it brings on depression is shocking in relation to the extent of depression that must exist when one considers the great number of people suffering from depression. psychologists make the case that a heart attack is a good predictor of depression, and that depression itself increases the risk of getting a heart attack by 1.6 times even after controlling for other cardiovascular risks. Depression also doubles the risk of death in people with known heart disease, such as following a heart attack, and it may be an independent risk factor for artery disease in men. Rani Desai argues that in general elderly men are a more medically ill group than elderly women, and have a correspondingly higher risk of experiencing co-occurring chronic illness and depression. Yet breast cancer is a great killer, and it could be assumed that some women who suffer breast cancer will be afflicted with depression as a result. A 5 year study was carried out on women who had suffered breast cancer, and who were treated for breast cancer at Guys Hospital Breast Unit in London. This study found that almost 50% of these women had depression in the year after the diagnosis, but, the good news is that, thereafter, those in remission showed similar levels of depression to the general population. Other factors, such as previous psychological problems, lack of social support, and other vulnerabilities, rather than the cancer accounted for the depression. To add to the complexity of depression, temperamental issues also enter the equation; and psychiatrists term this as depressive personality disorder. In other words, there are some personality types that are predisposed and vulnerable to getting depression. The psychiatrist Sarah Guzofski describes such a personality as characterised by a depressive disposition, introversion, a tendency toward self-criticism and pessimistic thinking processes. She, too, sees depression as being comorbid with depressive personality disorder. Sadly it seems that personality disorders are more the rule than the exception with depressed patients.
This may be further complicated by substance abuse, alcoholism, and eating disorders Eating disorders may be linked to body image dissatisfaction, and researchers state that people with eating disorders show a high lifetime prevalence of depression. As regards substance abuse, it is known that there is a high level of depressive symptoms among opiate addicts receiving methadone treatment in Dublin. So far I have looked at depression in the context of feelings (mood), of thinking, of behaviour, and of comorbidity (depression co-existing with other psychological or physical complaints). As part of the reason for these articles is to educate people, I would now like to explore the various categories of depression. Overall, depression can be categorised as either unipolar or bipolar. Unipolar depression contains only symptoms of depression, and has no symptoms of mania and hypomania which are symptoms of bipolar depression, which I will look at later on. Psychiatrists have categorised unipolar depression into three separate, but obviously related conditions. These are major depression, dysthymia (depressive neurosis), and depression not otherwise specified. Let us first look at major depression which is also known as clinical depression, or simply depression. Clinical depression means depression that needs clinical or professional attention. Sadly, major depression can develop very quickly, sometimes over a few days, and many people feel mildly depressed for a while before a full depressive bout happens.
