Jokes After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counselling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate, painful tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured. Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the

The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs, at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?" "Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I play golf."

Tipperary Food Producers To Host Another Long Table Dinner Tipperary food producers now employ 220 people directly, and have a cumulative turnover of €24m. Special guest at this year’s Long Table Dinner is Michael Kelly, founder of G.I.Y (Grow It Yourself). Tipperary Food Producers are once again planning to tantalise the tastebuds of food lovers from all over Ireland with its annual, sumptuous, Long Table Dinner which takes place in the historic grounds of Rockwell College outside Cashel on Wednesday, August 24th.
This epicurean gala has evolved into a lavish, highly organised feast. It started in 2007 when a group of local food producers came together to dine at a long table under the abundant fruit trees in the orchards of the Apple Farm in Cahir one late summer’s evening.
The banquet promises to be a gourmets dream bringing 300 guests on a culinary tour of Tipperary with a special menu of seasonal products sourced exclusively from the 30 members of the Tipperary Food Producers network.
The Tipperary Food Producers Network includes producers of meat, beverages and bread, soup, sweets, pastry, catering, dairy, cheese, farm shops, preserves and condiments, jams, fruit and vegetables.
Excellence is the common denominator for the banquet. Members of the Tipperary Food Producers network include a host of well known brands such as Cashel Blue Cheese, Cooleeny Cheese in Thurles, The Scullery, Crowes Farm, Hickeys Bakery, The Cookie Jar, and James Whelan Butchers in Clonmel. (For a full list go to www.tipperaryfoodproducers.com)
Tickets for this year’s event cost €75 and are available at James Whelan Butchers, Oakville Shopping Centre, Clonmel on (052) 6182477 OR from any member of the Tipperary Food Producers network at www.tipperaryfoodproducers.com Ticket holders are asked to be at the Rockwell College by 7.00pm sharp as the meal will commence at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are required for entry to the long table dinner event.
According to organiser and founder of the Tipperary Food Producers, butcher Pat Whelan from Clonmel,

Some people prefer to blow dry their hair while others leave their hair to dry naturally. There are advantages and disadvantages to both choices and in the end it comes down to personal preference and lifestyle. When it comes to air drying hair, the advantage is that it is natural and cheap, and the hair, as it is not subject to excessive heat, is less susceptible to damage. The disadvantage is that hair is at its weakest when it is wet. Therefore it is important not to rub hair dry with a towel as this causes the hair to become brittle. Hair should be blotted with a towel to take out the moisture. Be careful to to tug or pull at hair while it is wet, and when the moisture is blotted out of the hair, fluff it out with your fingers.
Blow drying the hair is of course more convenient especially for people who live fast-paced lives and of course, blow drying adds volume to the hair. However, blow drying, especially if it is overdone, can be dangerous to the hair as it can make the hair very brittle. Before blow drying hair, make sure that the moisture has been blotted out first. Keep the dryer at about six inches away from the head and move around. Do not dry the hair completely. Always leave hair slightly damp.Whichever way you do dry your hair, remember that hair is very fragile, so be very careful when handling it.
More efficient than conventional heating

North Tipp Macra Meet President McAleese The members of North Tipperary Macra had the honour of attending one of the final garden parties held at Arás an Uachtarán by President and Senator McAleese on July 7th. The theme of the gathering was the importance of community and eight members of North Tipp Macra were invited to attend as representatives of rural youth. The invite also coincided with the annual ESB Electric Ireland Know Your Neighbour weekend - Macra's centre piece of community involvement. The guests were firstly formally introduced to President and Senator McAleese before refreshments were served. With glorious weather, there was a chance to view the grounds
also. The President then addressed the guests and spoke about the value of community and building strong links within local communities. She praised the many groups present, who ranged from youth groups to graveyard committees to carers in respite centres and the invaluable part they have to play. Entertainment was then provided by choirs, singers and musicians from around the country, with RTE's Mary Kenny as MC for the day. The visit concluded with a guided tour of the house. The eight members who attended represented Macra clubs from all over North Tipperary including Aglish, Clodagh, Devil's Bit, Moyne and Nenagh.

Stomachs churned and hearts wrenched as the home support prayed and willed Nicole Walsh’s 59th minute free over the bar-agony gradually replaced by ecstasy as the ball drifted ever nearer the black spot. The Premier County staged a sensational fightback to overturn a nine point deficit, outscoring the Cats by 3-4 to 0-3. Tipperary started superbly with Sarah Fryday’s long range effort sneaking past a luckless Aine Kinsella. However, the home side failed to register another score for the remainder of the half, as Brendan Williams and Vincent Sheil’s combined charges asserted control in virtually all areas of the field. The Kilkenny half-forward line soon found their running game, aided by impeccable delivery from the outstanding Grace Walsh and Kelly Hamilton. Points from Claire Phelan, Orla Hanrick, and Aisling Curtis drew Kilkenny level, but crucially they were finding and exploiting gaps. Claire Phelan dispatched a low drive to the corner of the net to seize the initiative. Points from Miriam Walsh and Curtis had Tipperary further adrift, before Orla Hanrick pounced to raise another green flag on the stroke of half-time. Tipperary trailed by 2-6 to 1-0 at the interval.

Tipperary were in complete disarray. They looked a mere shadow of the side that took the game so valiantly to Clare (in the semi-final) when serious questions were asked. Heads dropped with every concession, their first touch was simply not good enough. You’d be forgiven for thinking this game had gone beyond their reach, nothing more than a lost cause, damage limitation some might say. But ultimately you’d be proven wrong on all fronts-and in some style. Tim Maher and Andy Ryan rang the changes at half-time. Anne Eviston, Teresa Ryan, Tara Kennedy, Alice Fogarty, and Mairead Teehan all entered the fray at various stages. Tipperary needed a leader, someone to stand up and be counted-and they found it in Sarah Fryday. Fryday burst forward with intent, and despite taking several blows, she had the awareness and confidence to drill the ball home from the edge of the 21. The crowd responded with chants and urgency, and when Brid Quinn (captain) pointed from close range, they knew the lead was manageable. A Nicole Walsh free was cleared into the path of Michaela Graham. Her effort whisked beyond the desperate reach of Kinsella, the lead was now down to two. Substitute Tara Kennedy cut it to a solitary point minutes later. It looked as if Tipperary would kick on from here. However, Kilkenny refused to wilt and points from Lydia Fitzpatrick (2) and substitute Emma Kavanagh saw them re-establish a healthy four point advantage with 10 minutes remaining. Nicole Walsh netted for the home side after a surging dart forward. The nar-
rowest of margins again separated the sides. Caoimhe Maher popped a handpass to Alice Fogarty, and when she levelled the tie, the crowd rallied the troops for one final assault. Nicole Walsh stood over a 45m free with one minute remaining. The crowd hushed as all the weight fell on Walsh’s shoulders. As the saying goes: “score and you will always be remembered, miss and you will never be forgotten”. It’s a savage burden that no sportswoman should have to deal with. Would it enter her mind, is she nervous? Calmness personified-she nailed it. Tipperary had a number of key performers on the day. The full-back line (Julie Ann Bourke, Sheila Ryan, and Louise McLoughlin) repealed and broke up numerous Kilkenny attacks in the second half, despite a shaky opening. Sarah Fryday impressed with her composure and speed, her second half goal being a major turning point. Substitutes Anne Eviston, Teresa Ryan, Tara Kennedy, Alice Fogarty, and Mairead Teehan worked a treat when introduced. Teresa Ryan worked tirelessly to keep the Kilkenny forward line at bay. Alice Fogarty changed the game in Tipp’s favour with her pace and strength causing countless problems for the Kilkenny defence. Congratulations to Tim Maher (Manager), Andy Ryan (Coach), Maureen Connolly, and Clodagh Loughnane (Selectors). Huge plaudits must also go to the home support that travelled in such vast numbers. It was immensely appreciated by players and management alike. Hopefully you can share in this terrific victory. It was a day where Tipperary entered the game as girls, but left as women. Tipperary: O. McEniry, J-A. Bourke, S. Ryan, L. McLoughlin, C. Quirke, A. Cremin, M. Barry, B. Quinn (Cpt. (01)), C. Maher, A. Loughnane, E. Fryday, N. Walsh (1-1, 1 free), S. Fryday (2-0), M. Graham (1-0), C. McGrath. Subs used: T. Kennedy (0-1), M. Teehan, T. Ryan, A. Eviston, A. Fogarty (0-1). Tipperary Star Player of the Match: Louise McLoughlin (Silvermines) Referee: Mike O’ Kelly (Cork) Andy Ryan (Coach) on the turning point: “The subs were a vital part; they were always going to be. Sarah’s goal set down the marker in the second half and we rallied well. I felt we were settled in the dressing room, but it was a different ball game in the first half.” Home support: “The support we had was inspirational. The crowd roaring after Sarah’s goal got us motoring again; it was worth two goals in its own right. The Tipp support has been excellent all along, be it U16 or minor. I can’t praise them enough.” (see back cover for photos from the match by Mike Ryan)

NEW DOUBLE DRAW BONANZA A new double draw bonanza with fantastic prizes has been launched in aid of the training fund for the county hurling and football teams. So far this has been a good year again for Tipperary teams with two Munster titles secured by the senior hurlers and minor footballers and both teams now looking forward to All Ireland semi-finals. The prizes include a trip for 2 to Australia for 2 weeks for the compromise rules games in October, a holiday for 2 to San Francisco with the All Stars in late November, tickets for the All Ireland senior hurling and football finals and tickets for all Tipperary’s senior football and hurling championship games next year. Tickets cost only €10 each and are available from clubs, county board officers, the GAA shops in Thurles and Clonmel, online at www.tipperary.gaa.ie and by phone during business hours Monday to Saturday at 0504 22702. We would greatly appreciate support for this draw as it will provide much needed funding to continue training and preparing our teams to the high standards necessary to achieve success. ALL IRELAND POC FADA COMPETITION
Congratulations to Brendan Cummins who secured the 2011 Poc Fada All Ireland title on Annaverna mountains in Cooley, County Louth last weekend. The All Star goalkeeper went around the 5km mountain course in 50 pucks. He won by a four-puck margin over 2010 Poc Fada champion Graham Clarke of Down. This was Brendan’s 5th title and in the 50th year of the competition it was special to win. He also won the Comorate Beirte (Pairs) title with Down’s Karol Keating on a combined score of 108 pucks. Well done also to Tipperary minor goalkeeper Shane Hassett of Drom and Inch who also participated and acquitted himself very well. His pairs partner was Davy Fitzgerald, the current Waterford SH manager and former Clare goalkeeper. COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP There were 7 games played in round 2 of the county senior hurling championship at the weekend with wins for Borris-Ileigh, Burgess, Éire Óg Annacarty, Nenagh Éire Óg, Templederry Kenyons, Thurles Sarsfields and Upperchurch Drombane. The senior hurling championship season is now over for the respective losers Kilruane MacDonaghs, Killenaule, Roscrea, Holycross Ballycahill, Lorrha and Dorrha, Golden Kilfeacle and Portroe. The eighth team to go into the round 3 draw will be JK Brackens or AN Other with the outcome to be determined following the hearing Carrick Swans have requested into their exclusion from the south and county senior hurling championships. SEAMUS Ó RIAIN CUP DRAW Two Ó Riain Cup quarter finals were played at the weekend with wins for Moycarkey – Borris over Ballingarry and Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams over Borrisokane. Cashel King Cormacs v Boherlahan Dualla will be played at Holycross next Saturday August 6 at 6.30pm. The fourth quarter-final between Moneygall and Ballybacon Grange will be fixed after the All Ireland semi-final between Tipperary and Dublin. GAA STARS URGED TO BREAK 10YEAR KICK FADA RECORDS Bray Emmets launched their MBNA sponsored Kick Fada competition in Croke Park last week. Along with record holder Mark Herbert from Kildare, Bray Emmets and MBNA issued a challenge to GAA players from both club and county to take part in the 2011 competition and break the Kick Fada distance records which now stand for a decade. The Kick Fada records which stand at 73m for men and 52m for women were set in 2001 by four-time MBNA Kick Fada Champion Mark Herbert from the Ballyteague GAA Club and Suzanne Hughes from Ballyboden St Endas GAA Club in Dublin. Over 20 inter-county stars are expected to take part in the 2011 competition, which takes place in Bray Emmets GAA Club on Saturday, September 10. The MBNA Kick Fada determines who is the longest and most accurate kicker of a Gaelic football in Ireland. Competitors must kick the ball over the bar

The Revive Music Festival, Thurles The Revive Music Festival will be held on Saturday, 6th August, 2011, at the Thurles Racecourse. Visit their website www.revivemusicfestival.com
The Revive Music Festival is set to be one of the live music highlights of 2011. Not since the mid 90's has Thurles witnessed a live event of this scale that boasts the very best in the Irish Music Industry including Mundy & Band, Ryan Sheridan & Whipping Boy. Revive will get under way at 12pm on Sat Aug 6th in Thurles Racecourse with Thurles band Jester opening the festival & will continue until 11pm when the excellent Mundy will close proceedings. While you enjoy the cream of Irish talent at Revive you can enjoy food & drink from Eddie Rockets, Supermacs, Bavaria & more. For those wishing to live the full festival experience Camping is available on Thurles Racecourse on Saturday night with a range
of food stalls to choose from on the campsite. Day pass €30.65 including booking fee. / Day Pass & Camping €42.25 including booking fee from www.ticketmaster.ie & all ticketmaster outlets nationwide.
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS Mundy & Band At the tender age of 18 Mundy started performing on busking haven Grafton St. Less than 2 years later Mundy signed with Epic Records & released his debut single “To you I bestow” which was included in the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmanns adaptation of Romeo & Juliet selling 11 million copies worldwide. Without a doubt one of the Irish music heavyweights Mundy has had major success with tracks such as crowd favourites “July”, “Mexico” & “Galway Girl”. Don't miss Mundys excellent, energetic live show as he headlines Revive.
Whipping Boy For those of you who were too small to go to The Feile or stay up for No Disco, Dublin foursome Whipping Boy are the one time purveyors of “Grot Pop” who garnered massive success with they're 1995 album “Hearworm”. Having reformed for a number of limited shows including Revive, Ferghal McKee & co will take to the stage blasting they're way through cult numbers like “We dont need nobody else”, “Twinkle” & the effortlessly ballsy “When we were young”. Ryan Sheridan Monaghan native Ryan Sheridan is one of 2011's brightest new Irish talents. Recently completing his first national headline tour & and an impressive Late Late show appearance to boot, he also performed with distinction for President Obama in College Green, supported The Script & Bryan Adams in Dublin's 02 with his acclaimed debut album “The day you live forever” at top five hit since its release in May – redying Ryan for the big time!
Royseven Alt pop six piece Royseven came to prominence in 2005 when they became the first unsigned act to headline The Olympia theatre, they were soon snapped up by Universal Germany & release their album “The Art of Insincerity”. An explosive live band led by Tipperary man Paul Walsh, Royseven their follow up You Say, We Say in 2011 attracting huge radio play for dynamic signle “We should be lovers” The lineup for the festival includes Mundy, Whipping Boy, Ryan Sheridan, Royseven, Fred, O' Emperor, Ham Sandwich, Bipolar Empire, The Flaws, Jester

Tipperary/Kilkenny Final For said before the Munster Final, if Kilkenny stop good ball going to John Me!
Dublin City Marathon 2011!!!!!!
After attending the All-Ireland Quarter Finals in Thurles two weekends ago, I doubt very much that Brian Cody or Declan Ryan were quaking in their boots! To say the games and standard of hurling by the four teams was average would be an understatement. Dublin took their goals well but really Limerick’s defence was all over the place for the first twenty minutes, when they did finally settle down it was too late. Donal O Grady refused to move the spare man in the full back line up the field and Dublin were happy to have a 3 on 2 in their full back line especially with Kevin Downes being a handful. I think Daly will probably keep an extra man in the backs and hope that forwards can generate space and win frees which Paul Ryan will convert. I think it really is the only way they have any chance, but I think while this tactic will prevent Tipp from scoring goals it just won’t be enough and it’s a Tipperary win by six points for me. Galway were so bad against Waterford that you can’t take really much from this game. Okay after they got hammered by Tipperary they showed spirit to re-group and put in a good display. But Galway were terrible. After five minutes of second half it was quiet clear that their heads had dropped and there wasn’t an ounce of fight in them. You really would have to wonder what John McIntrye has been doing up there for last three years. As for Waterford well I think Kilkenny will hammer them and get great pleasure in doing so. Like I
Kenny Franks, Thank you for entering the National Lottery Dublin Marathon, your marathon race number is 14429. Oh Oh! What have I done?! I don’t know if it’s the hangover from last night’s antics but something clicked with me this morning and now I’m entered for the Marathon on the 31st of October! It has always been an ambition of mine to run a marathon so why not! I like to keep myself somewhat fit and over the last two years I have started to run more regularly. I hope over the next three months to keep you updated on my progress and my training schedule. Yesterday I completed a duathlon in Donadea Forest Park; this consisted of a 5.2km run, 21km cycle and 5.2km run. Total time 1hour 53mins. Legs sore today but that could be from the bad dancing last night! Plan this week is to take part in another duathlon in Dublin on Wednesday. 2.7km run, 8km cycle, 2.7km run, 8km cycle, 2.7km run and maybe if legs are okay a 10km road race next weekend. 01/08/2011 – Weight 12st 6lbs
Book Review Well known for his journalism about the environment and his book Six Degrees, which details what will happen as global temperature creeps up and what we need to do to stop the rise, Mark Lynas changes his opinion on the best way to stop the temperature increase in The God Species. What grabs headlines is that, like other prominent environmental campaigners, Lynas is now pro-nuclear and also pro-GM. Lynas maintains that these technologies, along with synthetic biology, are key to ‘consciously managing the planet, by far the most important effort ever undertaken by humankind’.
Mullane then Waterford will really struggle. I fancy Kilkenny by at least eight points and setup the final we’ve all predicted!!!
Padraig Harrington – Are thing’s really that bad!! So my prediction for Padraig Harrington in The Open never materialised and last weekend he failed to make the cut at the Irish Open! On Saturday Harrington announced that his coach Bob Torrance and he have parted company. Okay, fair enough he isn’t producing exceptional golf at the moment and has lost his consistency but I still think there is a massive over-reaction to his form. He is still ranked 67th best golfer in the world on the latest rankings. He has gone this far with changes to his swing etc so he has to see it out now. In The Open he showed patches of great form so he still has the game, he just needs more consistency. This will come I have no doubt. Current World Rankings Rory McIlroy – 5 Graeme McDowell – 12 Darren Clarke – 31 Padraig Harrington – 66 Peter Lawrie – 133 Gareth Maybin – 166 Damien McGrane – 170 Shane Lowry – 186
Martin Perry – Sports Psychologist Darren Clarke – Unconscious Putting
the critical details of golf performance. More specifically, Rotella was helping Clarke on his putting. Or Unconscious Putting as the golf psychologist described it. As Darren putted beautifully under pressure on Day Four, the strategy was very successful. But what is Unconscious Putting? And more importantly, how do you do it? Well the key to Unconscious Putting is having a clear picture of the image or outcome that you want. Then 'letting go' and trusting your natural skills to deliver that outcome. Sounds simple doesn't it! It means having no fear of failure; no concerns about missing; no thoughts about technique; a clear uncluttered mind. Simply seeing the putt. Then hitting it. That’s it! It requires practice. Especially in the white heat of competition. To lead the Open Championship and play this way, takes a great deal of trust in your putting touch. But in reality anyone can do it. It doesn’t take strength, power or force. Merely the ability to let go of pre-conceived outcomes and simply 'see it and hit it'. And of course, deal with the consequences of missing.
So Darren Clarke, supported by two It's the essence of putting. And the sports psychologists, Bob Rotella key to success all over the course. and Mike Finnigan, is 2011 Open Champion. Mike Finnigan was working with the Ulsterman on his attitude and motivation. Rotella on
The God Species Mark Lynas Review by Elizabeth O’Shea What is much harder to grab in a headline is the planetary boundaries concept that has moved Lynas toward this position. The concept of planetary boundaries has been pioneered by a group of internationally respected scientists brought together by the director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre, Professor Johan Rockström, to determine what Earth systems are ‘being most affected by humans, and what the implied limits to human activities might be in these areas’. Identifying these boundaries now enables the identification of areas of planetary action, which can be ‘the organising basis for a new kind of environmental movement’, one that
recognises that ‘Nature no longer runs the Earth. We do. It is our choice what happens from here.’ As always, Lynas’ writing is clear and easy to follow, although many will take issue with his message. However, as the nine planetary boundaries are likely to influence environmental debate and action in the future, The God Species is an impor-
tant book to read for anyone interested in the long-term future of our species and in preventing planet-wide climate catastrophe. The God Species is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, which is open Wed-Thu 10.30am-5pm, Fri 10.30am-6pm, Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Counselling Depression
(Continued from last issue)
But back to endogenous depression. There are core symptoms of endogenous depression and neurotic depression. The unfortunate person who suffers from this painful condition does not feel pleasure in normally pleasurable experiences, and is either non-responsive or feels flat and has a low mood. These sufferers feel excessive guilt, and may be constantly either agitated or lethargic. They become dull and lifeless. 17 non-specific symptoms can be added to these core symptoms. The sufferer may suffer irregular body rhythms (e.g. variations in blood pressure), may wake up early and be unable to go back to sleep, or have difficulty staying asleep, or find it hard to fall asleep. They may lose weight, have suicidal thoughts, suffer anxiety, have difficulty concentrating, and endure worry and intrusive thoughts. They may worry excessively about their health and imagine they have various diseases. There is also the possibility that they will have self-pity, become irritable, be tearful, have low mood, or unstable mood, suffer fatigue and lose interest in sexual activity. This is an indication of how hard life is for such people and for their partners and spouses. The second type of depression in this category is biological depression and has been looked at under physical functioning. Most readers will have heard of PMS or premenstrual syndrome, which is a state of tension that some women endure prior to their monthly menstruation. This can make life a misery for the sufferer and for their partners. But a more severe type is PMDD or premenstrual dysphoric disorder which falls into the category ‘depression not otherwise specified’. Unlike PMS, this is truly depressive, and is defined as containing (during most menstrual cycles in the last year) five or more of the symptoms of depression. The symptoms appear during the last week of premenstruation (the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle which is a week before menstruation begins). It appears from research that PMDD has a biological basis distinct from major depression. There is not agreement that PMDD should be classified as a mood disorder, anxiety disorder, or a distinct form. But, NIMH, the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, (one of the best internet sites for you to learn about depression), with a $1.4 billion annual budget, describes the symptoms of this depression as anxiety, irritability and mood swings the week before menstruation, in such a way that it interferes with normal functioning. Then there is minor depressive disorder. This includes at least 2 weeks of symptoms but with less than the five required for major depressive disorder. And, finally, to recurrent brief depression.
By Jim O’Shea
This type of depression refers to episodes lasting 2 days to 2 weeks, but which happen at least once a month for 12 months. One of the unfortunate things about any type of depression is that it is generally a chronic and recurrent complaint. The risk for recurrence progressively increases with each episode and decreases when the period of recovery is longer. Recurrence varies with each individual, with some people having isolated recurrence separated by many years, while others experience clusters of major depression bouts happening closely together. Some people find that the depression occurs more frequently as they grow older. Double Depression (major depression superimposed on dysthymia) increases the risk of getting another episode of major depression. But, I have a feeling that if the main roots of depression are discovered and explored in therapy the chance of recurrence is decreased. There are various mediators that may predict recurrent episodes of depression. One is gender difference, but there are also psychosocial factors such as stressful life events, personality and cognitive (related to thinking) vulnerabilities, and poor social support. There is a close link between depression and stress irrespective of gender, although what is stressful to one person, may not be so to another. Ongoing stress is likely to lead to depression, and stress and depression can be a vicious circle insofar as stressful events may lead to depression which may in turn increase stress. This can happen in family relationships.
