Democracy is being allowed to vote for the candidate you dislike least. Robert Byrne
Two women were shopping. When they started to discuss their home lives, one said, "Seems like all Alfred and I do anymore is fight. I've been so upset I've lost 20 pounds." "Why don't you just leave him then?" asked her friend. "Oh! Not yet." the first replied, "I'd like to lose at least another fifteen pounds first."

A priest dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans. Saint Peter addresses this cool guy, 'Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven ? ' The guy replies, 'I'm Jack, retired airline pilot from Houston.' Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the pilot, 'Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom.' The pilot goes into Heaven with his robe and staff.

Next, it's the priest's turn. He stands erect and booms out, 'I am Father Bob, pastor of Saint Mary's for the last 43 years.' Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the priest, 'Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom. 'Just a minute,' says the good father. 'That man was a pilot and he gets a silken robe and golden staff and I get only cotton and wood. How can this be? 'Up here - we go by results,' says Saint Peter. 'When you preached people slept. When he flew, people prayed.'
"I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat the procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you'll have lost at least five pounds." When the blonde returns, she's lost nearly 20 pounds. "Why, that's amazing!" the doctor says. "Did you follow my instructions?" The blonde nods. "I'll tell you, though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day." "From hunger, you mean?" said the doctor. "No, from skipping," replied the blonde.
An elderly man is stopped by the police at around 2am and is asked where he is going at this time of night. The man replies, "I am on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late." The officer asks, "Really? Who is giving that lecture at this time of night?" The man replies, "That would be my wife." A blonde is overweight, so her doctor puts her on a diet.
A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before. "You'll get your chance in court," said the Desk Sergeant. "No, no, no!" said the man. "I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I've been trying to do that for years!"

The book also pays tribute to John Ryan, originally from Newport, who launched the literary magazine, Envoy, which fought against censorship and first published many of the struggling writers of the period. An accomplished artist, John exhibited at the annual RHA shows and designed theatre sets for the Abbey, Gate and Olympia Theatres. He played a major role in establishing the Sandycove Martello tower as a Joyce Museum. A contemporary insisted at John’s 1992 funeral: “Few people did as much for Irish literature as John did in the lean fifties, when he provided hospitality and encouragement to many an aspiring artist and writer. He was a Renaissance man.” J. P. Donleavy concluded: "Brendan Lynch’s book evokes vibrant memories of an ancient Dublin. And could there be any other city in the world more worth speaking about? Old friends come back to life whose minds still speak from the soul. Ancient sorrows remembered to haunt, but in which a bit of bright light still glows." Euro English The European Union commissioners have announced that agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, it was conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as Euro-English (Euro for short). In the first year, ‘s’ will be used instead of the soft ‘c’. Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard ‘c’ will be replaced with ‘k.’ Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome ‘ph’ will be replaced by ‘f’. This will make words like ‘fotograf’ 20 per sent shorter.
In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent ’e’s in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go. By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing ‘th’ by ‘z’ and ‘W’ by ‘V’. The Rules of Chocolate :) - If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too slowly. - Chocolate covered raisins, cherries, orange slices & strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want. Diet tip: Eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It'll take the edge off your appetite, and you'll eat less.
- If calories are an issue, store your chocolate on top of the fridge. Calories are afraid of heights, and they will jump out of the chocolate to protect themselves. - Eat equal amounts of dark chocolate and white chocolate; It's a balanced diet as they actually counteract each other.

County Senior Football Final Congratulations to Thomas MacDonaghs on winning the county senior football title on Sunday last at Leahy Park by defeating Moyle Rovers by 9 points to 7 in a closely fought encounter. It is the first time the title has gone to the North Division since 1975 when Kilruane MacDonaghs won. The O’Dwyer Cup was presented to joint captains Liam England (Roscrea) and Dan Hackett (Kildangan) by Football Board Chairman, Noel Morris (Borrisokane). The man of the match award, sponsored generously as usual by John Quirke Jewellers in Cahir, deservedly went to Philip Austin (Borrisokane) whose general play and 5 points from frees were instrumental in the Thomas MacDonaghs victory. Moyle Rovers will go on to represent Tipperary in the Munster club championship as divisional sides are not permitted to enter. They will play Cork champions, UCC, at a Tipperary venue on Sunday November 20. Well done to all who made arrangements for Sunday’s final and in particular to the officials and stewards from the Cashel club who put so much work into the event. Thanks also to Seamus King and the team from Cashel King Cormacs responsible for producing the programme. Finally, well done to referee David Grogan from Aherlow and his officials. Fethard Honoured
The Fethard teams which won the County Finals in 1978 and 1984 were honoured at Sunday’s county football finals. They were introduced to the attendance between the two games. Well done to the organising committee who makes these occasions such enjoyable reunions for the players of days gone by.
Mullinahone Win 2 County Titles Congratulations to CJ Kickhams Mullinahone on winning two county titles at the weekend. They won the Minor A hurling final at Templetuohy on Saturday by defeating Nenagh Éire Óg by 1-18 to 0-18 and on Sunday they won the Intermediate Football final at Cahir with a 1-11 to 0-6 victory over Emly. They also won 2 county tiles in 2006 on the same weekend, the Intermediate Football title and the Minor Football B title. It was a great achievement to win two titles on the same weekend for the second time. The minor title was the club’s first ever at the A grade and the Intermediate title was their third with the previ-
ous wins being in 2000 and 2006. Mullinahone will play Mountcollins of Limerick in the Munster Club Intermediate quarter-final at Clonmel Sportsfield on Sudnay next at 2pm. We wish them luck for the game. Last weekend was special for all associated with the Mullinahone club but two families in particular, the Currans and the Lonergans, deserve special mention. All Star full back, Paul Curran, married Tracy Lonergan on Friday and we congratulate them and wish them well for the future. Then on Sunday, Paul and his three brothers, Niall, Alan and Sean, and his new brother-in-law, Michael, all played in the Intermediate football final. It will certainly be a weekend to remember for them. Niall Curran also announced his retirement from Inter-County football last week. Niall made his championship debut at left corner-back vs. Limerick in May 2004 and has been one of a select few to represent Tipperary at all grades of both hurling and football. He was a member of the panel which won the Tommy Murphy Cup in 2005, the Allianz Football League Division 3 title in 2009 and promotion from Division 4 in 2008. He has always shown great dedication at both county and club level and we thank him for his contribution to Tipperary teams and wish him well for his future at club level.
County Minor B Football Final Ballyporeen won the county minor B football final on Sunday at Leahy Park, Cashel with a decisive 2-16 to 1-7 win over Kildangan. It was Ballyporeen’s first title on their own at this grade. They were part of a combination team called Brian Borus, which also included Clogheen, that won the title in 1986. The victory saw Ballyporeen become the first recipients of the impressive Hugh Kennedy Memorial Cup which was presented on Sunday by Liam Kennedy, brother of the late Hugh of Arravale Rovers, a former Chairman of the Tipperary Football Board and a leading light of football in Tipperary for many decades.
Munster Intermediate Club Hurling Hard luck to Aherlow following a brave but ultimately unsuccessful bid to qualify for the Munster Intermediate club hurling final on Sunday last. They were beaten by a single point 2-15 to 1-17 by Effin of Limerick, who now go on to play Ballyduff of Kerry in the final.

Two Tipperary artists At Free Events In Cloughjordan Two Tipperary artists visit Cloughjordan the weekend of 12-13 November for free events at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Singer-songwriter Fintan Brady, a native of Cappaghwhite, released his well-received album Under the Great Shady Tree earlier this year. Fran Curry of Tipp FM said ‘The album is creative, atmospheric and sounds great on radio.’ David Teevan of the Clonmel Junction Festival remarked ‘Fintan Brady's song writing is crispy and pertinent, his performances full of charm and a quirky humour which is most engaging.’ Saturday, 12 November at 8pm, Fintan brings ‘This Is It’ to Sheelagh na Gig in Cloughjordan. ‘This Is It’ is an evening of reflective, meditative, chill-out sounds and songs in a relaxed atmosphere. To help everyone attend who wants to attend, the performance is free of charge, although donations are welcome. Nenagh resident Nuala Woulfe has just published her third novel, The
Goddess Village. A new ecovillage is being built in the Irish midlands: no, not Cloughjordan! It’s the fictional village of Little Cloonsheeda, and the project is atracting people from all over the world in search of paradise. But when the Goddess Sex Therapy Clinic opens its doors trouble brews in paradise for everyone, women and men! As with her previous novels, The Goddess Village is sure to provide Nuala’s readers with a few laughs as her characters get themselves into some comic situations. On Sunday, 13 November at 4pm, Nuala will read and discuss The Goddess Village at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop in Cloughjordan. All are welcome to this free event, but do leave the children at home – there is a sex therapy clinic in the novel! For more information, contact Sheelagh na Gig on 0505 42123 or visit their page on Facebook.

Summary of 2011 for Nenagh Eire Og Camogie Club. By SĂŠamie Morris P.R.O 2011 was another successful year in the relatively short history of the club. The club has now 160 members with the vast majority of them being playing members. Our growing numbers of u 8s and u 10s have enjoyed a great year of learning the skills of Camogie and gaining friendships from different nationalities in the community that is Nenagh Eire Og Camogie club. They continue to improve and enjoy themselves under expert tuition in a controlled and safe environment. Our u 12s had two very competitive teams and they had a very good year with the A team winning the A county final against Newport. It is a very well balanced team with stars on every line. There was a lot of work done during the year and it paid off with the county final win. The u 14s had the heartbreak of losing two county finals in the A division this year. This takes it to four county finals in two years, coming out of last years B competition it was quite an achievement to qualify for both county finals again this year this time at A level .As a club we need to kick on and turn around these narrow defeats into victories. The U 15s got to the County A semi final and lost out after an epic battle against a very experienced Toomevara team. This team has plenty of ability and will be the cornerstone of the clubs drive forward to contest A competitions at Minor level in years to come. U16s lost out at County B semi final stage to a wonderful Cahir team after giving their all throughout the year. Like the u 15s they will provide forward thrust into contesting Minor A competitions in years to come Our Minors had a tough year at B grade but it was a learning experience for this very young team Our Junior B team won the Munster plate final and lost out to a very ex-

perienced Borrisoleigh team in the county Quarter Final. It was a historic year for this team who won the clubs first ever adult competition against Kilishen of Clare. After a wonderful game Nenagh won out 205 to 3-0 .Team Captain Mary Dillo lifted the clubs first adult Trophy to scenes of absolute joy in the home ground of Mac Donagh park. This team has been the driving force for the club because they had to suffer terrible defeats over the years because of their inexperience. They never dropped their heads and continued on the slow and sometimes painful path of gaining experience from Maria Sheedy Centra Sponsors of Nenagh Eire Og U12 Team every defeat and using it to their advantage. They are a perfect example of patience and dedication to their cause, which was to get their day in the sun which they grasped firmly with both hands. Counselling Depression
(Continued from last issue)
Having looked at depression among the young and the elderly, I would now like to consider it in a social context, including the basic social unit of the family. We have seen that the functioning of a family has a significant relationship with depression on children, and poor parenting and poor bonding with the primary carer may leave a child vulnerable to depression in later life. The truth is that a depressed parent has difficulty in proper parenting. Undoubtedly, a depressed member, young or adult, is a negative and sometimes devastating experience for others in the family. It is particularly painful if the depression is recurrent or chronic (ongoing), in which case it may complicate recovery from other illnesses. The depressed member may not be able to go to work, remain in bed for long periods, isolate himself from other family members, and perhaps be unable to manage minimal tasks. This negativism and hopelessness can bring conflict, frustration, and confusion into the family. It is a depressing experience for the other members. Kameron Hardin and Marny Hall have some points that might help you recognise if your partner has depression that are worth mentioning. You might, for example, notice a change in their personality. They may have become more serious and be smiling less, withdraw from social activities, become less chatty, grow silent, become careless, less interested in sex, frequently cry, and speak in a monotone. Your partner might begin to complain of physical ailments such as headaches and stomach-aches, and might be drinking more than usual, or watching more television than usual. Perhaps their style in clothes may change, they may become less interested in what they wear, or begin to wear dark clothes. Their sleeping pattern may also have changed, and they may become more anxious and worried especially over money, bills and health, and suffer a downward spiral of self-blame and self-criticism. Overall, the relationship may feel awkward. Seeing these behaviours may prevent serious discord in the family, otherwise family members, who may be sympathetic at the beginning, may eventually lose patience and see the depressed person as burdensome, unreasonable and perhaps obstinate and headstrong, and making no effort to help themselves. As the non-depressed members of the family become intolerant they may as use such phrases as ‘your problem is really getting on my nerves’, just pull yourself together’,’ you really need a shrink’, ‘if you don’t do something about this, I’m leaving’, ‘look on the bright side, you still have your health (job, money, looks’), ‘cheer up, things can’t really be that bad’ and so on. It is hard for family
By Jim O’Shea
members to put themselves in the depressed member’s shoes, but it is the only way to help, otherwise the withdrawing of support may only increase the sufferer’s depression. Emerging studies appear to have found a pattern of depression history in some families, and this may help members may be more understanding of what is happening. Some writers are confident that chronic or severe depression may be part of a family’s genetics, but I suspect that depression can be learned, and passed from generation to generation. There is also the question of how members of a family interact with each other. If some of these have poor attachment styles (cannot properly relate) so that they avoid intimacy, this can alienate helpful members and therefore increase depression. There are many other considerations that may influence patterns of family depression such as abuse, substance abuse, alcoholism, and other harmful and negative circumstances. Constance Hammen and Edward Watkins agree with this, but advocate that hereditary factors may make some people more likely to get depressed when faced with such negative factors. My feeling, however, is that people learn to be depressed. This may stretch over several generations and result in family members becoming vulnerable to depression. New research involving women in Australia show a significant association between abuse or combined abuse (physical, sexual and emotional) by a partner and depression. Abuse and depression have a devastating effect on a family.
