"The problem with political jokes is they get elected." Anonymous

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and pierced nose. Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. "Dear," said the mother diplomatically, "he doesn't seem very nice." "Oh please, Mom," replied the daughter, "if he wasn't nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?"

A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them. His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says, "I'm sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, 'Guess who?'" "But why?" asks the man.

A retiring farmer in preparation for selling his land, needed to rid his farm of animals. So he went to every house in his town. To the houses where the man is the boss, he gave a horse. 10 Reasons To Shop Locally & Support Independent Retailers 1. Local Economic Stimulus. When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses and service providers . Purchasing local helps grow other businesses. 2. Non Profits Receive Greater Support. Local business owners donate more to local charities than non-local owners. 3. Unique Businesses Create Character & Prosperity The unique character of your local community is defined in large part by the business that reside there, and that plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of your home and property. 4. Environmental Impact Is Reduced. Small local business usually set up shop in the town/village centre, providing a centralized variety that is much friendlier to a community's walk score than out of town shopping malls. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. 5. Most New Jobs Are Provided By Local Businesses. Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally. Plus the more jobs you have in your local community the less people are going to have

to commute which means more time and less traffic and pollution. 6. Customer Service Is Better. Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service. You are also going to see these people around town and they are less likely to be rude because they have to face you day after day.

7. Local Business Owners Invest In Community. Local businesses are owned by people who live in the community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community's welfare and future. 8. Public Benefits Far Outweigh Public Costs. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure and more efficiently utilize public services relative to chain stores. 9. Competition And Diversity Leads To More Consumer Choices. A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 10. You Matter More We talk a lot about exerting influence with your purchasing choices, or "voting with your wallet." It's a fact that business respond to their customers but your values and desires are much more influential to your local community business than the large chain stores.

I could have changed the World When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family.

Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world.

The John Harrington scripted biography of John Doyle, “The Geatest Hurling Story Ever Told” was launched last Thursday night at the Anner Hotel in the presence of a large crowd. Described by publisher Liam Hayes, the former Meath footballer, as the best GAA book ever written, it’s bound to attract a lot of interest in the period coming up to Christmas. It’s for sale in bookshops and newsagents in Tipperary and throughout the country. Last week was also special for the Ardfinnan Club as GAA President Christy Cooney launched the club’s history of the period 1910 to 2010 which was written by Michael O’Meara, former Secretary of the South Board. It’s an entertaining read enlivened by a great collection of pho-

This Forum will be workshop based where delegates will work in groups discussing various topics and providing feedback. The topics for the workshops include Games, GAA and the Community, Urbanisation, Communication and Information Technology, Rural Clubs, Match Days – Tickets/Presentation. Both Paudie Butler, former GAA National Director of Hurling and David Power, Tipperary Minor Football Manager will give short presentations on the day. There has been a very positive response from the Post Primary schools in the county to the forum and each school that has registered will be represented by four delegates. Ireland Reaching Out And The GAA Team Up Ireland Reaching Out (Ireland XO) and the GAA will launch an innovative pilot programme aimed at attracting members of the Irish Diaspora to the GAA club network worldwide in San Francisco on Sunday next, December 4. The simple idea is that as parish

communities around Ireland identify people connected with their parish through their genealogical research, they introduce them through the Ireland XO organisation to the nearest international GAA club so that they can learn about, and possibly participate in Irish sporting culture, well away from Ireland. Over 450 GAA clubs are now in existence outside of Ireland around the world. The pilot project will be launched by GAA President Christy Cooney, and Ireland XO Chairman, Mike Feerick, at a special brunch event at the Treasure Island GAA facilities. The event is being held in conjunction with the visit of the 2011 Hurling All-Stars to San Francisco. Leading members of the Irish technology community in Silicon Valley will also attend the event. It is hoped that should the project prove successful in San Francisco, it will be rolled out to all GAA clubs worldwide. It’s not such a long way to Tipperary after all! The Tipperary GAA website has been accessed from 115 different countries so far this year. It’s a sign of the times with emigration very much the only option for work for many of our young people. It’s also a sign of the power of the Internet and its importance in promoting and reporting on our games and activities. The home, fixtures, results and news pages are the most popular with site visitors. Tipperary GAA Scene Information concerning all areas in the GAA will appear in this section in the future. If you wish to include any item of interest in future articles, please contact the County Public Relations Officer Ger Ryan at 0868149146 or via e-mail at pro.tipperary@gaa.ie on or before 3: 0pm on Monday. Book Review An independent group of home owners has decided to band together and unite in a concerted effort to protect all homes against repossession.

attempted eviction to document, record, offer advice and act upon any issues that are considered dubious or illegal.

The group, calling itself the Anti-Eviction Taskforce is growing in numbers at a tremendous pace. Starting with a handful of people under threat of eviction, its numbers swelled to over 200 people overnight, even before its website was complete.

The Anti-Eviction Taskforce is sure to become one of the most popular movements on the net in Ireland as this week we see over 100,000 family homes threatened.

“The continued apathy and procrastination of the government in dealing with the crisis has ignited our movement” said Patrick Grant, a member of the group, he cited “The tremendous work being done by New Beginnings, The People’s Association Watchdog, Defend Our Homes League and Irish Homeowners Unite is being ignored and given nothing more than a glancing nod of recognition by the government, while Ireland is sinking deeper into a quagmire of misery and socioeconomic disaster.

The Anti Eviction Taskforce supports the initiatives and hard work of all other groups involved with protecting family homes that are under threat, including The People’s Association Watchdog, Irish Homeowners Unite, DOHL and New Beginnings. The Anti-Eviction Taskforce encourages anyone and everyone willing to defend the homes of others as they would like their own homes protected.

Father John Kenyon By Tim Boland Father John Kenyon by Tim Boland Have you ever wondered where Kenyon Street in Nenagh got its name? It is, in fact, named after the Young Irelander, Father John Kenyon, parish priest of Templederry from 1847 to 1869. Tim Boland’s impressive new biography of the priest will help bring John Kenyon back into the minds of historians and others interested in the Young Ireland period, especially as it is very clearly written and easy to read, unlike many academic books. Students and academics studying the period will find Father John Kenyon a very useful book because it gives thorough research references and a comprehensive bibliography. Tim Boland’s is a must-have book for people interested in north Tipperary history and the famine and Young Ireland period.

Father John Kenyon is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, which is open WedThu 10.30am-5.30pm, Fri-Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Tel: 0505 42123; email, info@sheelaghnagig.com; follow us on Twitter @sheelaghnagig; or see us on Facebook.

Counselling Depression

(Continued from last issue)

In any event, it is clear that this mix of negativity and emotional turmoil, sometimes accompanied by poor family dynamics cause relationships between family members to suffer, and to foster further depression. Marriage relationships can deteriorate if severe depression persists over a long period. There is a strong association between depression and marital distress. The non-depressed partner is saddled with coping alone as well as enduring the behaviour of the distressed partner. The non-depressed partner may see him or her as a burden, causing worry and failing to respond positively to support. Part of this worry is about the hopelessness that is inherent in depression, and hopelessness can be a pointer to suicidal thoughts. Suicidal thinking is also a symptom of depression rooted in a sense of futility, of being worthless, and the thought that death is preferable to living. This reality is a nightmare for a family, and for the nondepressed partner. Of course, depression in the context of a marriage relationship can be a two way process. Marital dysfunction can in itself cause depression; for example the ending of close intimacy is highly stressful and may bring on depression. Research has shown that dissatisfied spouses are three times as likely to develop depression as satisfied ones. Some studies relating to men and depression show that marriage troubles is the single most common problem associated with male depression. They show that men can’t cope with disagreements as well as women, and try to avoid arguments. The female partner is most likely to wish to talk about the problem and the male partner wishes to avoid talking about it. She feels ignored and he feels nagged, and withdraws further. The negative impact of depression on marriage relationships may be increased if the depressed partner has a long-term medical condition. Such a condition may make the depression worse as well as increasing the health costs in any household, a reality that can further increase tension in the marriage relationship. If the tension becomes too strong it can lead to divorce, and it seems that men are more vulnerable to depression than women during the divorce process. Sometimes it can be devastating for them, and is likely to cause severe depression, as well as antisocial behaviour, anger, alcohol use, and anxiety. This may be because the man loses not only a partner, but also loses contact with children, their familiar place of living, and mutual friends, place of worship, neighbours and community associations. This depression also leads to suicidal intent and often suicide. Depression may be further fostered if the man remarries. He may feel inadequate, angry, powerless in relation to step-children; and the difficulty of supporting a second family may impose a severe burden on him. Depression, too, is a greater

risk for men who are already vulnerable to it. Every situation, of course, is unique, and I am acutely aware that marriage breakdown is also very depressive for female partners. One of the saddest results of depression is how it damages good parenting. A depressed parent may lack energy, patience and interest, and result in negative parenting or even disengagement to some extent from the children. Research has shown that there is a strong correlation between childrearing styles and the presence or absence of depression in the child’s later life as an adult. Parents, who are controlling, and either lacking affection, or, on the other hand, overprotective, are sowing the seeds of depression in their children. This depression is likely to sprout in the face of stressful events in later life. Most of the research has been done on women, but recent studies have also underlined the significance of paternal depression on parenting. Professor Thomas J. McMahon of the Yale University Medical School and a colleague A. Z Spector show that depressed fathers show more negative parenting behaviours, and are less inclined to play with their children, read to them, hug them or help with the daily routines. Depression in fathers tends to be associated with more hostile behaviour towards the children, and is more critical, bringing about a conflictual relationship with the children. They also contribute to marital disharmony and this becomes a negative experience for children. There is a two way process here, too. McMahon and Spector state that depressed men may experience guilt and negative feelings, just as mothers do, when they contemplate their failure to function properly as parents.

The Local Multiplier Effect Buying local products at locally owned businesses keeps money circulating closer to where you spend it. This creates a ripple effect as those businesses and their employees in turn spend their money locally. Unfortunately, most corporate chains send most of your money out of town.

If everyone in a community spends a greater percentage locally, the multiplier effect turns that into big bucks for the local economy. For example, increasing local spending from 50% to 80% more than doubles the money - therefore €200 spent locally could have close to €500 in impact on the community!
