“Let's be naughty and save Santa the trip.” Gary Allen

After the Baptism of his baby brother in church, little Johnny sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That priest said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, but I want to stay with you guys."

A young man called his mother and announced excitedly that he had just

met the woman of his dreams. Now what should he do? His mother had an idea: "Why don't you send her flowers, and on the card invite her to your apartment for a home- cooked meal?" He thought this was a great strategy, and arranged a date for a week later. His mother called the day after the big date to see how things had gone. "The evening was a disaster," he moaned. "Why, didn't she come over?" asked his mother.

"Oh, she came over alright, but she refused to cook...."

In a hat shop a saleslady gushed: "That's the hat for you! It makes you look ten years younger." "Then I don't want it," retorted the customer. "I certainly can't afford to put on ten years every time I take off my hat!"

Little Johnny attended a horse auction with his father, watching as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs, rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Johnny asked, "Dad, why are you doing that?" His father replied, "Because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy." Looking worried, Johnny said, "Dad, I think the milkman wants to buy Mom!"

At school they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially interested when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and said, "Johnny what is the matter?" Little Johnny responded, "I have a pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife."

A little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination, looking at the old pages as he turned them. Then something fell out, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages. "Mammy, look what I found," the boy called out. "What have you got there, dear?" his mother asked. With astonishment in the his voice, he answered, "It's Adam's Suit!"

Superhands: A Book on Baby Sign Language Ireland’s very first illustrated dictionary of baby sign language Based on a concept that originated in the US in 1986 with Dr Joseph Garcia, baby sign language has become an international phenomenon allowing parents to communicate at a whole new level with their infants before they have learned to talk. Already extremely popular in the U.S. and across Europe, baby sign language is beginning to take off in Ireland. At the forefront of this is SuperHands, who have just published Ireland’s first illustrated baby sign dictionary. This bright and colourful board book introduces parents and their little ones to the first forty signs they will need to communicate with each other. From food and drink to fun toy and animal signs, this book will get the mums and dads of Ireland communicating with their infants before they can even talk! Using simple gestures, babies and their parents embark on an entirely new journey of interaction with each other and more importantly, have fun together. Thanks to SuperHands’ baby sign language dictionary, parents and babies can learn to sign with each other from the comfort of their own homes while using ISL, Irish Sign Language, the language of our local deaf community. Baby sign language can reduce baby's frustration, enhance confidence, increase parent-child bond, accelerate speech and reduce temper tantrums. Above all, however, it’s about spend-

Sliding Wardrobes ing enjoyable, quality time with your baby. Having begun in the West of Ireland in 2009, hundreds of parents and babies have taken part in SuperHands classes and learned this new method of communicating with their babies. Miriam Devitt, founder of SuperHands, says the new book is a welcome addition to her company. “This is a very exciting time for infant communication in Ireland. The feedback from my classes in Clare and Limerick has been so great that I was keen to expand as quickly as possible. Now parents all over the country can experience the joys of signing with their babies.” Gemma, mum to Hazel, 14 months, has really enjoyed learning sign with SuperHands: ”Hazel is now able to sign milk, drink, eat, apple, tired, tree, bath and nappy. Sign language has made communicating with her so much easier. She is able to tell me exactly what she needs which leads to less frustration for her and for me. Brilliant!” For more information see www.superhands.ie or call Miriam on 086 822 3165.

The Tipperary Friends of Animals want to remind everyone that puppies and kittens are a lifetime commitment. They are living creatures who feel joy and sorrow in exactly the same way that people do and when they are abandoned after a few months, it is a heartbreaking experience to the animals who don’t understand what has happened. Anyone considering getting a pet, should first look into the cost of keeping a pet, especially in today’s financial climate. A decent pet food can be expensive and vaccinations and vets bills would certainly put a dent in anyone’s pocket. Then there is the kennelling fees for when the holiday time is around. Having said all that, pets are wonderful to have around a home and you can be assured of no greater friend, but just like a friend, a commitment has to be made to keep them for life. Anyone wanting a dog or a cat can call us at 086-8163707 and after the Christmas frenzy had died down, the Tipperary Friends of Animals will be delighted to enrich your home with another family member!

A Taste Of Tipperary At BBC Good Food Show In Birmingham Food producers and tourism operators from across the island of Ireland flew the flag for Irish food recently, on the Tourism Ireland stand at the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham. On the stand were members of Good Food Ireland, hotels, B&B’s and guesthouses, food producers and restaurants, all representing some of the very best of Ireland and our culinary produce. Attracting approximately 80,000 food-loving visitors, the Good Food Show is the largest consumer food and drink exhibition in Great Britain. This is Tourism Ireland’s eleventh year attending the show, helping to raise awareness of the island of Ireland as a superb food tourism destination. ‘Great Value Eating’ has been a key focus of Tourism Ireland’s promotional campaigns in GB in recent years, with the island of Ireland becoming increasingly known for its high quality, natural produce and the fine ingredients that are used to create both traditional and innovative dishes.

Vanessa Markey, Tourism Ireland’s head of Great Britain, said:”Food is a very important element of the tourism experience and the island of Ireland is increasingly becoming known for its high quality cuisine. Promotions such as the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham help us to raise awareness of Ireland as a premier holiday destination with an outstanding food product, by ensuring that potential holidaymakers who visit our stand get to experience at firsthand the passion of local producers for sourcing, using and promoting Irish produce. “The positive performance from Great Britain, our largest and most important tourism market, which has shown growth of over +5% for the first ten months of the year, is an encouraging basis on which Tourism Ireland, together with our industry partners, will build in 2012, working to win business and keep the island of Ireland ‘top of mind’ with the British consumer.”

Tipperary GAA Yearbook The Tipperary GAA Yearbook is now on sale and retails at 10 Euro. This year’s book which is in full colour contains 224 pages and one of the highlights of the book is the extensive use of photographs. It gives a comprehensive review of all the happenings on the various fronts during 2011. Tipperary’s All Ireland minor football success figures prominently and the exploits of our senior hurlers and footballers are also recalled. There are the usual reviews of the divisional championships at adult and Bord na nÓg level. Cumann na mBunscoil, Post Primary schools and Third Level Colleges activities receive appropriate coverage. The Camogie section includes an article on Tipperary’s historic All Ireland Under 16 and Under 18 double. The activities for the year in Handball, Ladies Football and Scór are all included. In the Awards Section Paul Curran, Michael Cahill, Padraic Maher and Lar Corbett, our All-Star hurlers, and Jill Horan, Camogie All Star are given prominence, as well as other people honoured throughout the county during the year. The yearbook includes appreciations to John Doyle and Gerry Slevin who passed to their eternal reward during the last twelve months. Scoreboard 2011 gives the results of both club and inter-county championships. The Yearbook is an excellent publication and will give many hours of enjoyment from reading it to our Gaels at home and abroad over the Christmas period. Well done to the Tipperary Publications Committee led by Chairman, Seamus King and Secretary, John Smith on producing another great Yearbook.

Death Comes to Pemberley By P.D. James

And

The Lonely Beast By Chris Judge Publishers release so many books just before Christmas that it’s difficult for a bookseller to single out one or two. However, after some thought we’ve decided this is what we’d like to see under the tree. In fiction, we return to Pemberley, where Elizabeth Bennet is living in wedded bliss with D’Arcy. But, thanks to PD James, the least favoured sister, Lydia Wickham, arrives hysterical and uninvited claiming her husband has been murdered. Will D’Arcy once again save the Bennet family from infamy? While James does not always adhere to Jane Austen’s style, Death Comes to Pemberley has received uniformly enthusiastic reviews and will entertain mystery lovers and Austen fans alike. In non-fiction, we have to select The GAA County by County. This book explores how the unique GAA traditions of each county developed. Thoroughly illustrated with photos, The GAA County by County makes an important contribution to Irish so-

cial history – and will be a great source of information for pub quiz questions!

1. Keep receipts / proof of purchase Always ask for and keep your receipts. If an item is faulty it is much easier to get redress if you can produce proof of purchase. 2. The 3 Rs of your consumer rights Under the Sale of Goods Act you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund if an item is faulty, not fit for its purpose or not as described. If this happens, it is the responsibility of the seller to put things right. Remember you will need proof of purchase so keep your receipts. If you remain unsatisfied with how a shop is handling your problem, you may wish to resort to the Small Claims Court for resolution of disputes covering items up to a value of €2,000. You are not entitled to a refund if you simply change your mind. However, many shops operate a goodwill policy of accepting unused returns, with receipts, within a stated time period. 3. Gift receipts If the item is a gift then ask for a Gift Receipt. Some shops provide these. They do not state the price of the item but allow the consumer to pass on proof of purchase with the gift. 4. Gift voucher expiry dates Gift vouchers / cards are a popular gift particularly around Christmas time. Check if there is an expiry date and ensure the person receiving it will be able to use it in the required time. Remember shops do not have to replace lost vouchers. 5. Online shopping - know your rights Remember that in addition to enjoying the same rights as shopping on the high street when you buy online, you are also entitled, in most cases, to return an unwanted item within seven days of receipt for a no-quibble refund. Just beware that postage and packing charges are not usually refundable on such unwanted items and always check that delivery policies meet your needs.

Security of your personal financial information is a prime issue when shopping online, so always look for the padlock symbol on the bottom of the website and check the seller is reputable. 6. Consumer rights lie with the buyer of the goods Consumer rights in relation to a product or service lie with the person who actually made the purchase. So if you buy a gift for someone and it turns out to be faulty, you may have to seek redress on that person's behalf.

7. Make sure the goods work as soon as you get home If the goods are faulty it is important to act quickly, so always check that products are working as soon as you get them home. This may also spare you any trauma facing the Customer Service desk with a faulty item during the mania of post-Christmas sales! Also don't leave it until Christmas morning to discover you need batteries or additional accessories. 8. Safety first Look out for the CE marking when buying toys and electrical items. The mark shows that the item conforms to essential EU health and safety requirements. Always follow safety instructions and select age-appropriate children's toys. 9. Watch out for scams If you're offered toys or other gifts at a 'knock-down price', check if the items are authentic. You have no comeback if they are counterfeit, they may not conform to important safety standards and you are promoting an illegal practice. If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is. 10. Credit cards Don't get snowed under by debt this Christmas. Remember the cost of credit if shopping on plastic and try to spend within the limits of what you can afford to repay. Check payment deadlines for "Interest Free, Buy now, Pay Later" offers and make sure you plan to pay within the allotted time, or else interest penalties may start to pile up! 11. Watch out for added extras Always check what is and is not included in the basic price of an item. If expensive accessories are required, factor this into your purchase decision. Think carefully about your genuine requirements before agreeing to purchase extras such as extended warranties and don't feel pressurised by hard-sell tactics. Remember that your consumer rights cannot be denied once you have a genuine consumer complaint no matter what type of warranty you have. 12. Read the small print Know what you are signing up to, particularly in the case of contracts for membership or subscription-based services. Be aware that you are entering into a legal contract that may commit you to remaining a member for a minimum amount of time, for example one year, or may require you to observe minimum notice periods when you wish to terminate that contract. Stay safe when using your cards this Christmas Christmas can be a stressful time and you’ll probably be spending more time in the shops than you usually would. With the crowds, lists and pressure to get everything organised in time, you need to be extra careful using your credit and debit cards at the till. If you use your card and the transaction does not go through successfully the first time, make sure the shop assistant voids the transaction and gives you a void receipt. Do not put in your PIN again if the first transaction has not been cancelled as you could be charged twice for the same transaction. If you find out later that the transaction has gone through twice, you should return to the retailer and ask them to reverse it. If the issue is not resolved to your satisfaction, you should ask your bank to carry out a chargeback on the transaction. If you are using an ATM machine during Christmas, be alert and put

your personal safety first. If you spot anything unusual about the cash machine, or if there are signs of tampering, do not use it. You should report your suspicions to the bank concerned immediately. Stand close to the ATM or card terminal and always shield the keypad with your free hand and your body to avoid anyone seeing you enter your PIN. If the cash machine does not return your card or does not give you the correct amount of money, report it immediately to your own card company or bank rather than the bank operating the ATM machine. You have a relationship with your own bank so ask them to sort it out for you.

Ormond AV Ltd Facts About Christmas In many households, part of the fun of eating Christmas pudding is finding a trinket that predicts your fortune for the coming year. For instance, finding a coin means you will become wealthy. A ring means you will get married; while a button predicts bachelorhood. The idea of hiding something in the pudding comes from the tradition in the Middle Ages of hiding a bean in a cake that was served on Twelfth Night. Whoever found the bean became "king" for the rest of the night. The "Twelve Days of Christmas"gifts: a partridge in a pear tree, two turtledoves, three french hens, four calling birds, five gold rings, six geese laying, seven swans swimming, eigh maids milking, nine ladies dancing, ten lords leaping, eleven pipers piping, and twelve drummers drumming. There are 364 gifts altogether, one for everyday of the year.

St. Francis of Assisi introduced Christmas carols to formal church services. In 1647,Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas as he believed that feasting and revelry on what was supposed to be a holy day to be immoral. Anyone caught celebrating was arrested. The ban was lifted in 1660 when the Puritans power and Charles 11 became King of England. December 25th was not celebrated as the birthday of Christ until the year AD440.

The “Multiplier Effect” The Importance of Supporting Local Business (Repeated from last issue to help drive the message home)

According to RGData the “multiplier effect” means that €1 spent locally is worth €4 while €1 spend in a global chain is worth a fraction of that. How the Multiplier Effect works A really basic example of how the multiplier effect works and helps the local economy is as follows; I go to my local electrical shop one morning and spend €100 on some electrical appliance. Later that morning the owner of the electrical shop goes to the local garage and pays for €100 worth of long overdue maintenance to his car. The mechanic has a Christmas party coming up and needs some new clothes so he goes to the local clothes shop and spends €100. The owner of the clothes shop goes to the local hair salon and spends €100 on a beautiful new upstyle for Christmas. The hairdresser visits the local butcher and buys €100 worth of meat…… This story could keep going on and on respending/recycling the same money throughout the community. In this very basic example €500 has been spent in the local economy (of course the figures are rounded off for convenience, but hopefully you get the basic

idea) Now just suppose I bought my electrical appliance online from overseas or instead of supporting the local trader I went to a large foreign owned multinational? You may say that you get better value for money buying online or in the multinationals. That’s fair enough. Everybody is looking for the best value they can. But large numbers of people making a conscious effort to spend an extra bit locally can and does make a difference. For instance, instead of one person spending €100 we could break it down into 10 people spending an extra €10 or 20 people spending an extra €5 locally. Imagine the over 40,000 readers of the Tipp Tatler spending just an extra €10 or €20 with small independent retailers. That’s not an extra €10 on what you would already be spending, that’s just spending it locally instead of giving it to some global corporation to divide up amongst their shareholders.

10 Reasons To Shop Locally

Borrisoleigh Craft Fair

& Support Independent Retailers

A local Arts and Crafts Expo was held in the Community Centre in Borrisoleigh recently with plenty of local entrepreneurs displaying their wares. Visit borrisoleigh.ie (30th Nov news) for more photos

1. Local Economic Stimulus.

When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned Mary Maher Card Creations businesses often purchase from other (086) 2412927 local businesses and service providers . Purchasing local helps grow other businesses. 2. Non Profits Receive Greater Support. Local business owners donate more to local charities than non-local owners.

Ann O Sullivan Nappy Cakes (086) 3848333

3. Unique Businesses Create Character & Prosperity The unique character of your local community is defined in large part by the business that reside there, and that plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of your home and property. 4. Environmental Impact Is Reduced. Small local business usually set up shop in the town/village centre, providing a centralized variety that is much friendlier to a community's walk score than out of town shopping malls. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

Jennifer Hill of Tiarabelle (087) 1506768

5. Most New Jobs Are Provided By Local Businesses. Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally. Plus the more jobs you have in your local community the less people are going to have

Word Search

to commute which means more time and less traffic and pollution. 6. Customer Service Is Better. Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service. You are also going to see these people around town and they are less likely to be rude because they have to face you day after day. 7. Local Business Owners Invest In Community. Local businesses are owned by people who live in the community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community's welfare and future. 8. Public Benefits Far Outweigh Public Costs. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure and more efficiently utilize public services relative to chain stores. 9. Competition And Diversity Leads To More Consumer Choices. A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 10. You Matter More We talk a lot about exerting influence with your purchasing choices, or "voting with your wallet." It's a fact that business respond to their customers but your values and desires are much more influential to your local community business than the large chain stores.

The Local Multiplier Effect Buying local products at locally owned businesses keeps money circulating closer to where you spend it. This creates a ripple effect as those businesses and their employees in turn spend their money locally. Unfortunately, most corporate chains send most of your money out of town.

If everyone in a community spends a greater percentage locally, the multiplier effect turns that into big bucks for the local economy. For example, increasing local spending from 50% to 80% more than doubles the money - therefore €200 spent locally could have close to €500 in impact on the community!

Mr Tatler Investigates

Irish Government Special Advisers We generally try to avoid politics here, preferring positivity to the negative doom and gloom that pervades at the moment. However I recently came across a recent entry on the political website itsapoliticalworld.wordpress.com which is the group blog of www.politicalworld.org a political forum for political debates and discussions. Now I would always have assumed that a political advisor to a government minister would be advising on policy etc. However as you read through the article you will see how many of these advisers are in fact nothing more than PR professionals whose job is to advise their employers on public relations matters ie. maintain a favourable public image. They also have strong links to the national media organisations (which helps explain why journalists rarely seriously criticise politicians in case they jeopardise a future lucrative role as an advisor/spin Doctor). So, as you sit down over Christmas, wondering is your job safe, will you get a job, how to pay your bills, how your children who have emigrated are getting on etc. Remember that while unsecured bondholders and bankers are receiving vast amounts of OUR money due to a situation that WE did not create, that OUR government, paid by US to represent US, appears to be more concerned with appearing good on TV and in the national media. “The primary function of special advisers will be to secure the achievement of Government objectives and to ensure effective co-ordination in the implementation of the programme for government. The role and duties of special advisers are described in section 11 of the Public Service Management Act 1997. In summary, these are (i) providing advice; (ii) monitoring, facilitating and securing the achievement of Government objectives that relate to the Department, as requested; and (iii) performing such other functions as may be directed.” kildarestreet.com “Public Relations, plural noun, [also treated as singular] the professional maintenance of a favourable public image by a company or other organization or a famous person:” OED Online “Special Advisers’ Statements of Interests A special adviser is required under the Ethics Acts to prepare and furnish to the office holder who appointed him or her a statement of any registrable interests held by him or her which could materially influence him or her in the performance of his or her official functions by reason of the fact that such performance could so affect those interests as to confer on or withhold from him or her or his or her spouse or civil partner or child or child of a spouse a substantial benefit. The office holder is required under the Ethics Acts to lay any such statement before each House of the Oireachtas within 60 days of its receipt by him or her (a separate statement of any registrable interests of spouse or civil partner or child or child of a spouse is also required to be furnished, but is not laid before the Oireachtas). Unlike statements of registrable interests furnished by members of the Oireachtas, which are published by the Clerk of Dáil Éireann or of Seanad Éireann as appropriate in a register of members’ interests, special advisers’ statements are not published. However, under the Standing Orders for each House, all documents laid before each House shall be considered public. Accordingly, statements which have been furnished to the Standards Commission by special advisers may be viewed and copied by request to the Commission’s Secretariat.” (SIPO Annual report 2010) The Government had imposed a “salary cap” of €92,000.00 for these posts, which are not advertised. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has appointed four to his “kitchen cabinet”. They will cost the taxpayer €440,000 a year. (Not including the Government press secretary Eoghan Ó Neachtain, who was paid a salary of €138,655 last year.) Mark Kennelly a Veteran FGer (€168,000) first worked with Fine Gael during the Rainbow Coalition as a researcher at the European Parliament. He was then elevated to the position of special adviser to Michael Lowry in 1995. He played an “important role” in Pro-

gramme for Government negotiations and operated as Mr Kenny’s election tour manager. Andrew McDowell also breaking the salary cap at €168,000. An “economist in the Fine Gael tradition”. First cousin once removed, Michael McDowell and another ex-Forfas. Joined FG in 06 where he worked for Finance spokesman Bruton and later Noonan. Angela Flanagan and Paul O’Brien are both former party policy officers, each earn €80,051 . Tom Fabozzi is Fine Gael’s “Director of Media & Research”. He came from TV3 where he was producer of Tonight with Vincent Browne and Ursula Halligan’s old show The Political Party. He holds a masters in Political Communication and will be “responsible for developing and implementing the Party’s communication strategy”. Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore’s chief handler is Mark Garrett who the Phoenix describes as one of the “Blairite modernisers” in the party and is another one over the cap on €168,000 . Colm O’Reardon again over on €155,000 is policy director for the party and has worked for the ERSI so we have big hopes. Jean O’Mahony a policy analyst is in the €80,051–€98,424 range. Finbarr O’Malley is legal advisor on €83,337 and also linked to Rabbitte’s department . Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney had drafted in former chief executive of Greencore USA Fergal Leamy. He had quite an impressive CV which again warranted a breach of the cap at €130,000. He has since vacated the position, perhaps having looked into the abyss we don’t know. Áine Kilroy is a former researcher for Fergus O’Dowd and netting €80,051 . Seán Mac Cárthaigh (€83,337), was Dublin correspondent of The Irish News before moving to Paris for The Times (London). More recently he was Assistant Editor of The Sunday Business Post. Sean is now advisor to Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan having previously been director of public affairs with the Arts Council. Also there is Jim Kenny - his salary is “in line with the guidelines set down by Government on staffing ministerial offices”. Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald has hired Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and Marion Mannion both in the €80,051–€92,672 range. Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte has hired former chief executive of the Irish Travel Agents’ Association Simon Nugent for again over at €97,200 Helping Ruairí Quinn are John Walshe and Deirdre Grant. Walsh (€92,672) was Education correspondent and Editor at the Irish Independent for over 18 years while Deirdre Grant (€86,604) is a former TV3 programmer and wife of Karl Brophy, Independent News & Media’s Director of Corporate Affairs.

Mr Tatler Investigates Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan has hired Claire Langton at €80,051 and Sean McKeown at €92,672 who was Chief Executive Officer of the Kilkenny County Enterprise Board. Mary Kenny has worked with Minister for Finance Michael Noonan since forever and gets €83,337 for her troubles. Noonan had a new press advisor appointed 14/11/11 replacing Eoin Dorgan who is gone into the DOF. No details as yet. Ronan O’Brien is in the cuts wing of Finance with Brendan Howlin. He was director of communications and marketing at Chartered Accountants Ireland and was advisor to Ruairí Quinn when he was leader of the Labour Party which we assume means he too can break the cap at €114,000.. Anne Byrne was Member of the Medical Council 1984-1993 and Programme Manager in Health and Environment under previous administrations. She was also and adviser to Leas Cheann Comhairle 2007-2011 and picks up €83,337.

cured another break in the cap for Brian Murphy who is set to receive €105,837. Defending Enda on the Ciarán Conlon issue Minister Varadkar said that higher salaries had to be given in order to attract a high calibre of people, which was the very thinking behind Jobsbridge no doubt.. Mr. Murphy was Director of Commercial Affairs with the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association. So may be staying with Leo if he ever makes it to health. Nick Miller here too and paid ahem, “in accordance with rates approved by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform”. Chief Whip Paul Kehoe for some reason needs an advisor and hired Mark O’Doherty. Salary not available

Róisín Shortall who being a junior minister had not been expected to appoint advisers managed to secure one of those exemptions that almost everyone else who asked got and hired Irish Times journalist Maev-Ann Wren. However the Super in Super Junior entitled Willie Penrose to two advisers. Back on the dole queue (unless he can get In health Mark Costigan who was a Deputy Government Press Sec- his Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown county council seat back) is unsuccessretary and a former spokesman for Mary Harney has been retained by ful Labour general election candidate Aidan Culhane, who was TD Alex White’s running mate. Dr James Reilly. Previously he was a journalist, including Political Editor for Today FM. €92,672 . Sean Faughnan former Fine Gael FG kindly provided a list of the FF/GP advisers last year and it is still official is there in the €80,051–€92,672 range. available here On Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton’s team is Ciarán Conlon. He hit the headlines on budget day as the government took over a billion in cuts to welfare and services it emerged Enda Kenny had overruled his two finance ministers to again break the cap and pay the former Fine Gael communications director €127,000. Conor Quinn is also here on €80,051 . Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has taken on Thomas Cooney and Jane Lehane both in the €80,051–€98,424 range. Cooney is an academic and well known for his views being closer to Shatter then Richard Boyd Barrett. Liam Cahill is former head of hunting lobby group, RISE and former head of PR for AIB and Intel. He was programme manager to Fianna Fáil minister David Andrews in the Reynolds government. Worked for Pat Rabbitte while Labour were in opposition. Now PR adviser to Fine Gael Minister Shane McEntee.

The Government, on the recommendation of the Taoiseach, has appointed Mr. Martin Fraser, Assistant Secretary, Department of the Taoiseach, to be Secretary General to the Government and Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach, with effect from 1st August 2011. Mr Fraser has been an Assistant Secretary in the Department since 2007, having previously been Director of the Northern Ireland Division. He replaces Dermot McCarthy, who retired in September. Dermot was appointed Secretary General to the Government in January 2000 and Secretary General of the Department in July 2001. He features here because he sat at the cabinet table and surely wasn’t short of advice. I had flagged his departure during the summer on the forum and the original figures released (drumroll) €114,000 a year and an immediate lump sum of €342,000. Much to my surprise when the hullabaloo kicked off in September the numbers had taken quite a jump. Compensation for the prospect of a post in Rome disappearing we’ll never know?

A full house! Kathleen Barrington is one of Ireland’s best journalists, full stop. Her work in the SBP over the last few years has earned her hero status among some of us. The articles (which can be found linked on Politicalworld.org) were vital in piecing together the murky events that brought us here. This Summer she was appointed special advisor to Joan Burton. While everyone wishes her well it was somewhat disappointing news to say the least. There is a poignant moment in the clip of Enda launching of all things the “new” IFSC strategy. As the Taoiseach waffles about the bankers lofty plan and a “responsible on-shore tax jurisdiction”. Kathleen is spotted coming out the door of government buildings behind. However, Joan’s alignment with Barrington lends some credence to the theory that she was overlooked for a finance post because of certain official’s discomfort with Joan asking the “wrong” questions while in opposition. Let’s hope Joan and Kathleen are playing the long game. Naivety could be getting the better of me there but with so little to hang on to we take what we can get.

By; FIVE (Oireachtas Retort) 6.12.2011 Authors notes: Next time a Minister compares Social Welfare in the North to ours you can gently remind them that in Britain, the highest paid adviser earned €164,000 last year. As I wrote this it was hard not to notice there isn’t a single woman over the cap and most appear to be in the “basic” 80k range including those who have been with TDs for some time unlike these talented blow ins from the private sector. While I am of the firm belief that almost everyone featured is paid too much (especially as spin is order of the day ) it seems even the gravy train has catching up to do .

While this Government is spending less then the last shower. Wasting less money the Fianna Fáil is hardly much of an achievement. Based on these incomplete figures breaking the cap cost the government savings of €527633. More if you include advisers to junior ministers Joining her in social protection is solicitor Ed Brophy. He worked in and the chief whip. I know a bondholder wouldn’t wipe their nose Endesa Ireland as the Legal and Procurement Director. Previously he with it but that money would go a long way towards SNAs, bags of was a Senior Associate in Arthur Cox Solicitors. Again over the cap turf and medication that makes life just manageable. Instead the coaat €127,796 lition offers a bailout to the world of PR for people who apparently Despite originally telling us his pay would be “in accordance with refused to work for ninety two thousand euro per year. rates approved by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform” Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar se-

How to keep your stress levels under control at Christmas Presents If you have a large circle of extended family or friends to buy gifts for, it can be very costly. You might be able to reduce the stress and cost of Christmas for everyone if you suggest a change in the way your family and friends give presents. For example, you could suggest that your group: • Buy presents only for the children. • Have a Kris Kringle, where everyone draws a name out of a hat and buys a present only for that person. • Set a limit on the cost of presents. Christmas shopping Stress reduction strategies for successful Christmas shopping include: • Make a list of all the gifts you wish to buy before you go shopping. If you wait for inspiration to strike, you could be wandering aimlessly around the shops for hours. There are numerous businesses in this issue of the Tipp Tatler offering excellent gift ideas. • Buy a few extras, such as chocolates, just in case you forget somebody or you have unexpected guests bearing gifts. • If possible, do your Christmas shopping early

booked before Christmas, so don't wait till the last minute. Relationships Stress, anxiety and depression are common during the festive season. If nothing else, reassure yourself that these feelings are normal. Stress reduction strategies include: • Don't expect miracles. If you and certain family members bicker all year long, you can be sure there'll be tension at Christmas lunch. • Avoid known triggers. For example, if politics is a touchy subject in your family, don't talk about it. If someone brings up the topic, use distraction and quickly move onto something else to talk about. • Use relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or focusing on your breath, to cope with anxiety or tension. • Family members involved in after-lunch activities (such as playing board games) are less likely to get into arguments. Plan for something to do as a group after lunch if necessary. • People under stress tend to 'self-medicate' with alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs. Try to remember that drugs can't solve problems or alleviate stress in the long term.

Last weeks Budget paved the way to destroy economies in Rural Ireland while raking in millions for Banksters and Bondholders By Séamie Morris The budget last week was a savage attack on the people of rural Ireland which will further erode our local economies while slavishly keeping on the road to paying back the gambling debts of Foreign Banksters and Bondholders who had long since given up on getting their money back. Joan Burton’s savage attack on single parents would make Margaret Thatcher proud. The cuts to the elderly were equally savage as were the cuts to the disabled. Much was spoken about the reversal to the reduction of age of entitlement for disability allowance from 18 to 16 but the fact of the matter is that all Government ministers signed off that cut and thought it would slip through unnoticed. There were also savage cuts in education which will hit those with less ability to pay hardest. It is of course a budget full of U turns which is being presented as a budget that has equality at the very core of it. Nothing could be further from the truth but the truth is a victim of the lavish amount of money paid for by you and I for the 16 extra spin doctors hired by Labour and Fine Gael to tell you that they have you in their mind while they slavishly follow the doctrine handed down to them by the Eurocrats that insist that illegal Bondholders should be looked after first while our economy teeters on the brink of destruction. This Government has had no problem in finding an EXTRA €13 million for payoffs and pensions for their former colleagues and extra 3.8 million for Special

ADVISORS some of whom have broken their own self-imposed payment cap The Gravy train rolls on for Government cronies while the rest of us face austerity to pay the bill. Democracy is being made a mockery of by these charlatans. The increase in price in Petrol and increase in motor tax is an attack on those lucky enough to have a job in North Tipperary as 70% of people in North Tipperary need their cars to get to work. In fact our budget had to be presented to the German Parliament before it was presented to the Irish People. Labours way or Frankfurt’s way it is not Mr Gilmore! Two new taxes were brought in by Mr Noonan in the shape of the Household charge of €100 and the €50 euro septic tank inspection charge. These are further attacks on Rural Ireland particularly the septic tank charge and both of them will be opposed by ordinary people who have enough at this stage. I will personally defend any person that can’t afford to pay these illegal taxes from state bullying. I will let the words of Mr Noonan after the 2010 budget sum up my views on the budget “This was a puppet budget from a puppet Government who are doing what they are being told to do by the I.M.F/E.C.B. You cannot cut and tax your way out of a recession. You can only grow out of a recession” Indeed Mr Noonan it’s a pity you didn’t listen to your own words before donning the jack boots of your masters before using them to kick the people of Ireland.

Counselling Depression

(Continued from last issue)

Hopefully it is now clear that living with a depressed partner or family member is very difficult. Kameron Hardin and Marny Hall in their excellent book Queer Blues offer some helpful suggestions to the nondepressed members to prevent burnout, a state which is surely detrimental to family and individual wellbeing. They offer 10 suggestions: 1. Get support from friends, family, support groups or therapy to reduce a sense of isolation and stress. 2. Make time for yourself and continue with your usual hobbies, social activities and friendships 3. Exercise (especially aerobic exercise), and get plenty of sleep. 4. Manage your time by making out priorities, but realise that you cannot get everything done. 5. Take a break, and allow others to help you 6. Stay out of the medication monitor role, i.e. do not take responsibility for having the depressed person take his anti-depressants. That is his responsibility 7. Keep a journal, talk to friends and spend time alone. 8. Say no when you need to. This means taking care of yourself. 9. Practise active relaxation using deep (abdominal) breathing, relaxation tapes and listening to soft music. Meditate, pray and make up gentle rituals. 10. Take a sabbatical, go away for a day, a week or longer. Get a massage, read, go dancing, do whatever you enjoy. Those points are all about self-care. I would also like to offer some other suggestions about living with a depressed partner. It might be helpful to think about depression in the same way as you would if your partner had a physical complaint. This will help you to be considerate and empathic, and this may help make life more bearable for you and your depressed partner. In this context try and show small acts of kindness, even if the depressed person does not acknowledge it. When you feel frustrated it is easy to be provocative, so it is well to know what your partner’s buttons are that provoke him or her. Avoid pushing these buttons when he or she is in a depressed state. In other words be sensitive to how he or she is, even though you may feel angry at the time. It is not easy, but worthwhile for both your sakes. There are various small ways to ease your partner’s burden. Perhaps you might offer to do the shopping, empty the rubbish bins, do the laundry, take the children out to give him or her a break. Such small ways shows the depressed person that you understand. This sense of understanding can be enhanced if you discuss with your partner, when he or she, is not depressed how they would like you to behave when depression strikes again. I think that it is important to educate yourself and learn all about depression. That is the purpose of these articles. You could also ask a doctor about it. Read about it. This shows the depressed person that you care about him or her.

By Jim O’Shea

Some of what has been written in relation to the family is also relevant in the context of society. A family is, after all, a unit of society, and one which functions on relationships. It has been seen that depression affects how a person relates to others, and interferes with normal relationships. By changing behaviours it damages how a person functions in society, and how one functions in society is extremely important in the context of depression. Unfortunately many people react negatively to a depressed person. This negative reaction may be in how another person feels and thinks about a depressed individual. Or indeed they may verbally react in a negative way. Their behaviour may be turning away from the depressed person, and, perhaps understandably, they often do not wish to continue contact with him or her, because they dislike negative mood. As well as this, depressed individuals find it very difficult to engage others or respond with interest to them, and this further discourages contact. Depressed people, too, are sometimes needy and dependent, and others can view this as burdensome and irritating. Dependency of course, may not only be a sign of depression, it may also be a personality trait. Another personality trait which can inhibit social interaction is being shy, distant or introverted. I don’t see anything wrong with having an introverted (looking inward) personality unless such introversive tendencies cause serious discomfort, making one feel inadequate or not good enough in social situations. Nonetheless, Constance Hammen and Edward Watkins argue that there is a strong association between introversion and depression. This means that if social interaction is stressful it can arouse a person’s underlying vulnerabilities and trigger depression.

Healthy Hair Healthy Body Health is something many people don’t tend to think about until something happens. Health is also not something that comes to mind when getting the hair done in a hair salon. However, it can be a very serious health issue for some people. In the average hair salon, you can be exposed to many different chemicals without even realising. Some people have had very serious allergic reactions after spending many years getting their regular hair colour done.

Plants and herbs are the answer. Henna, for example, has been used quite effectively to colour hair. It’s messy if you try to use it at home, but it’s a very healthy option. It has no chemicals and it’s a treatment for hair and scalp too. Henna has come a long way and can be used just as effectively as a chemical colour with great results and can in fact, look a lot better and more natural than the chemical option.

That’s why I use it in my salon Eco Hair. I refuse to As time goes by, more and more chemicals are being cre- submit to chemicals out of convenience. Henna takes a ated by the chemical companies.
