Jokes A grocer put up a sign that read "Eggplants, 25c each -- three for a Euro." All day long, customers came in exclaiming: "Don't be ridiculous! I should get four for a Euro!" Meekly the grocer capitulated and packaged four eggplants. The tailor next door had been watching these antics and finally asked the grocer, "Aren't you going to fix the mistake on your sign?" "What mistake?" the grocer asked. "Before I put up that sign no one ever bought more than one eggplant."
Perhaps it’s only coincidence, but man’s best friend can’t talk. US tourists, a man and his wife are traveling in the Middle East. A man approaches the husband, saying, "I'll give you 100 camels for your woman." After a long silence, the husband says, "She's not for sale." The indignant wife says, "What took you so long to answer?" The husband replied, "I was trying to figure out how to get 100 camels back home."
"Well, you have a short memory," says his wife. "Can't you remember about three months ago when we broke down, and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself! "God loves drunk people too you know." The man does as he is told, gets dressed, and goes out into the pounding rain. He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are you still there?" "Yes," comes back the answer. A man and his wife were awakened "Do you still need a push?" calls out at 3:00 am by a loud pounding on the the husband. door. A man left work Friday afternoon, but, instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend, hunting with the boys and spending his paycheck without telling his wife. When he appeared at home, Sunday night, he was confronted by his very angry spouse, who barraged him for two hours with a tirade of yelling. Finally, she stopped the nagging and simply said to him, "How would you like it if you didn't see me for two or three days?" To which he replied, "That would be fine with me." So, Monday went by and he didn't see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. On Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye.

A Course so Good it Sounds too good to be true! Would you make a point of coming to a course if I said to you that it would make you more confident, more focused, happier and more in control? If I said that the course would help you understand your behaviour, good and bad, in a manner that empowered you and helped you heal what needs to be healed; that the course explores humanity and our uniqueness in the animal kingdom, namely our mind and how it works, and that you would find the explanation clear, understandable, and full of common sense and that not only that….but the understanding would cause realisations that freed you, opened up your mind to your true potential and so much more? If I said the course would explore the Power of the human mind as demonstrated through the Placebo effect, through scientific fact and live video footage of actual experiences plus hypnosis demonstrations? If I said that all you had to do was come along once per week for 7 weeks and experience the presentation of lots of well researched, wonderful, enlightening information in a dynamic, entertaining and professional manner via powerpoint, video clips, class discussions & demonstrations? That you would get a text book chapter by chapter, week by week including all the information? That you would witness hyp-

Controversial science experiment relived on film at Nenagh Arts Centre Nenagh Arts Centre screens James Marsh’s lauded documentary ‘Project Nim’ on Thursday 19th January as part of its ongoing film club season. Nim is a chimp and the unfortunate star of a compelling though ethically questionable 1970s scientific study in which, at 2 weeks old, he was sent to live with a scientist, who would raise Nim as though he were a human child. The primary goal was to observe whether sign language could be irrefutably taught to a chimp, such that he could adequately communicate with humans, while also investigating the prevalent nature vs. nurture theories beloved of behavioural scientists of the time. Director James Marsh – whose fantastic ‘Man on Wire’ scooped up the Academy Award for Best Documentary – crafts a visually dynamic documentary on the experiment and its outcome, combining frank interviews with the family members involved along with outstanding, little-seen home video footage, and some brand-new reconstructions of the various locations relevant to the experiment. ‘Project Nim’ reaches grand emotional highs through its examination of the nature vs. nurture principle, and the tastelessly unscrupulous scientific ethics of the people involved. The film is unflinching in it’s portrayal of how the Nim was treated and how he treated his host family. His ultimate fate reveals as much about human nature as that of the animal world. The film screens at 8 p.m. on Thursday 19th January in the Arts Centre, Town Hall, Banba Square. Tickets are €7 from the Arts
Centre or online at www.nenagharts.com
Exciting mix of folk and classical music at Nenagh Arts Centre. Arriving at Nenagh Arts Centre on Saturday 21st January is the fusion of classical and traditional folk music ‘Trio Elatha’. The musical backgrounds experienced by the three musicians in the group naturally bring together the old and the new - both folk and classical music. Zoë Conway is one of Ireland’s most outstanding traditional fiddlers but also received classical tuition and flirts easily between the two styles. Indeed guitar player Brendan Walsh had folk music in his ears from an early age growing up in Co Clare but went on to study classical music to the highest level. Ailbhe McDonagh’s versatility is in performing the most complex contemporary music in addition to the classical masterpieces and, while she went on to become a cellist of the highest order, she also studied piano to a high standard. Ailbhe has local connections and is a niece to Nenagh-born priest Fr. Sean McDonagh who is well known for his work on the environment. The trio's diverse influences combine to inspire their music programme of classical music and their own folk arrangements and compositions. Tickets are available online at www.nenagharts.com or from the Arts Centre in the Town Hall in Banba Square. Tickets are priced at €15 with a concession rate of €10 for OAPS, unwaged, disability or students. The concert starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday 21st January.
My Brilliant Divorce At The Source Jasango Theatre presents My Brilliant Divorce by Geraldine Aron Directed by George B. Miller Featuring Angela Ryan Jasango Theatre are back with a bang with Geraldine Aron’s achingly funny My Brilliant Divorce. Following a twoyear Irish tour and award-winning performances in the USA with Bombshells, Jasango brings you this wittily observant comedy. If you liked Bombshells you’ll love this one!
The comedy explores what life is like for Angela Kennedy-Lipsky, recently dumped by her accountant husband for a younger model. Rebuilding her life, she finds herself adrift in a sea of weird sexual encounters, sneaky solicitors, phone-in counsellors, a bad case of hypochondria and impending poverty. Should she fight to keep her husband? Or should she sign the final papers and move on? Fast-paced modern comedy-not to be missed!

‘The Wesht’ Comes to Cloughjordan as Drama Group present their 46th Production "A Wake in the West", a three-act comedy by Michael Joseph Ginnelly, will be staged by Cloughjordan Drama Group on Friday January 20th, Saturday 21st, Sunday 22nd, Wednesday 25th, Friday 27th and Saturday 28th January at 8.30 pm. The gags come thick and fast in this play and a great night’s entertainment is assured. The plot centres on the wake of Tom Healy, a man who was known to be ‘fond of a drop’. Tom’s controversial last request threatens to humiliate his family and make them the laughing stock of the small fishing village in which they live. "Not exactly an avid church-goer", Tom's dying wish flies in the face of traditional religious ceremony in 1970's Ireland. The priest and doctor need to be consulted, as does Tom’s son Martin who is returning from New York for the funeral (a return eagerly awaited by neighbour Joan who has held a candle for Martin since his departure to the States). When conniving old neighbour Rose (played by Maureen Shelly in one of her funniest roles to date) calls to pay her respects, the mayhem really develops and her antics set in motion a sequence of hilarious events.

Family friends and neighbours consist of an array of colourful characters who add to the general chaos. Barney is Tom’s life-long friend and ‘drinking buddy’ who volunteers to help carry out Tom’s last wishes..but as the audience will learn, the village drunk isn’t the ideal candidate for the job. Margaret is Barney’s long-suffering wife who now also has to cope with the trauma of witnessing Rose’s shocking ‘carry-an’. With his foresight and understanding of the comical, Seamus Costello again has achieved fine work as director this year and audiences will not be disappointed. The play will run for six nights only at Cloughjordan Parochial Hall. Curtains up at 8.30 pm each night, people are advised to come early to avoid disappointment. Don’t miss this hilarious comedy – it’s the ideal way to beat the post-Christmas blues! The opening night will be our charity night – proceeds from Friday night January 20th will be donated to North Tipperary Hospice so please come out to support this worthy cause.

Letters Our state obsession with Deferring to others is killing this country Ireland as a country has had an obsession with deferring power to others so that we can blame everyone else for our own problems. Before this state was formed we liked to defer to the British(some still dream of the return of British rule) we then deferred to the Catholic church and now thanks to the FF/Green/Lowryite Governments abdication to the Troika we now have someone else to blame for our actions. Fine Gael and Labour have willingly followed in the footsteps of the previous Government by deferring all power to outside forces but the willingness of our new Government to strip every last piece of flesh off the backs of the Irish taxpayer to pay back failed speculative gambles and debts caused by idiot senior banking officials while still protecting the elite of society from any pain or austerity is breathtaking from a Government that has no back bone. The budget cuts are fast beginning to bite where every section of Irish Society are relieved of the hard earned cash, except of course the Top people in society who remain untouched. Former Taoiseach and Fine Gael guru John Bruton recently told us that we must abandon our culture of entitlement but last week he signalled that he would not relinquish his 138,000 euro pension. A case of do as I say not what I do! All the people that lecture us on what we should do are happy coasting
along with their fat wages and bursting pension pots paid for by you and i(Including Alan Kelly and Noel Coonan). They have no problem breaking their own salary caps to hire friends with special skills. While they feather their own nest they are coming up with more and more ways of dipping their hands into your pocket so that they can persuade the Troika that we are Good Europeans. But of course our Government will tell us that it is the Troikas fault They made us do it! Austerity is causing businesses to fail and tax payers to become unemployed as a result tax revenue falls and the deficit grows bigger. It is the big lie of right wind pseudo economics (swallowed hook line and sinker by Labour) that we can tax our way out of a recession. Meanwhile another couple of bondholder vultures will get a 1.5 billion windfall before the end of January. It is up to the Irish people to take back control by putting their foot down in a display of economic warfare that will need us to refuse to pay any extra taxes while foreign bondholders are sucking us dry. I will use a quote from Enda Kenny in 1994 to show us the way “It is morally wrong unjust and unfair to tax a persons house “. Of course that was before Enda deferred all power to the Troika. Yours sincerely Cllr. Séamie Morris 08/01/2012

Spring Evening Courses No matter how one may think himself accomplished, when he sets out to learn a new language, science, or the bicycle, he has entered a new realm as truly as if he were a child newly born into the world. ~Frances Willard, How I Learned to Ride the Bicycle As we (hopefully) begin to leave winter behind us and face into a whole new year, now is a good time to look into learning something new or improve on existing skills or knowledge. A large range of evening courses are available taking place over the next few months. Reasons for enrolling in evening classes include; • Improving your employment prospects. Extra skills, increased knowledge and being able to show prospective employers that you are interested in improving your skillset will give you an edge when it comes to seeking employment or changing jobs. • From a personal point of view it is good for everyone to have some creative outlet in their lives, to escape the bonds of society and get back in touch with our more natural sides, at least for a few hours a week. There is a great sense of satisfaction to be had from creating something yourself. Not buying something and putting it together; not watching or reading about what someone else has created; not copying what someone else has already done millions of times, but actually coming up with an original idea and working hard to see the project through to fruition. The end result might not be perfect, and there are
bound to be setbacks along the way, but sticking with it and creating something yourself is generally well worth the effort. Creating something new does wonders for people's confidence and self - esteem. • It makes communities more productive and innovative, as workers create and discover new abilities and ideas. In our knowledge-based economy and society, change is constant in the workplace. But people who embrace lifelong learning—who constantly learn new skills and train for new challenges—can better cope with the demands of workplace changes. • It strengthens the economy. The more skills, knowledge and ability that individuals develop, the greater the level of capacity in the economy. A stronger economy means citizens benefit from the chance to earn more, live better and contribute to the economic system. • Letting skills stagnate is the worst thing anyone on a solid career path can do to themselves. It is not enough to rely on lessons learned years ago in college. Life is about change, and nothing, not even a job, is immune to that fact. Someone who takes the plunge into continuing education keeps their mind facile, and their skills polished. Have a look through the classes on offer from Colaiste Mhuire Co-ed, Thurles, St Sheelans College, Templemore and LIT Limerick and Tipperary in this issue and you are sure to find something that will benefit you now and in the future.

Ireland's Independence Day On the 21st of January this year, a little publicised event will take place in the Mansion House, Dublin. The turning of the Sovereign Seal at 12 noon is an annual event which marks Ireland's Independence Day.

Nenagh Silent Film Festival The Nenagh Silent Film Festival (NSFF) initiative has begun to gain momentum with several interested parties coming on board to show support since the initial public meeting during early December. Some of the familiar faces who have quickly shown their support for this venture include Alan Kelly TD, Tony Tormey (Paul Brennan: Fair City), Councillors Lalor McGee, Tom Moylan and Seamus Morris, plus Nenagh Mayor Virginia O’Dowd. (Visit www.tipptatler.ie for quotes from the above plus others supporting the festival) Also offering support as a patron of the Nenagh Silent Film Festival is the Fair City actor Tony Tormey. He has been quoted as saying that: “The Nenagh Silent Film Festival is a terrific idea. Like a lot of actors, I grew up watching Laurel and Hardy and Harold Llyod. Now I share that laughter with my own children. To see it on a big screen would be wonderful.” Co-founding member of the NSFF initiative Michael ‘Charlie’ McGee notes that when launching the inaugural Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival in the County Kerry village of Waterville during August 2011, journalist Charlie Bird highlighted his admiration for people who get off their behinds and start doing things for their community. This was also supplemented by Jimmy Dennihan TD, who stated that some people get new ideas, they grab them and run with them – people like Dr Ellie O’Sullivan and Josephine Chaplin who proposed and decided to go with their idea of a Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival just the previous autumn. It is planned that the Nenagh Silent Film Festival will be held in the latter half of 2012 over several days and will include a wide programme of events from the essential silent film screenings, a number of short film competitions for students and professionals, film-making workshops, and much, much more. Film Festivals have become popular ventures across the country in a bid to draw tourism and several of these like the Cork, Kerry and Waterford Film Festivals or the Galway Film Fleadh and the Jameson International Film Festival draw huge attendances which are beneficial to the hosting region.
The NSFF committee also notes that initial financial reports from the inaugural Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival show that it was a roaring success with over 5,000 in attendance; while the local economy was boosted with a six-figure sum. It should also be noted of Charlie Chaplin’s connection to Waterville village and in the same manner it is planned by the Nenagh Silent Film Festival committee to highlight the connection of Rex Ingram, the famous silent film director, to Nenagh town. In the same light the Rex Ingram connection to Nenagh town should not be forgotten. This Irishman could be viewed as Ireland’s forgotten movie pioneer and it is a goal of the Nenagh Silent Film Festival to remember a great of the movie-world who at one time called Nenagh his home. Tony Tormey also commented on this Irishborn movie legend: "Rex Ingram was one of the first Irishmen to make an impact on world cinema. He paved the way for John Ford and the many Irish talents who came after. To honour him like this in Nenagh is a great tribute to one of our own." Reginald Ingram Montgomery Hitchcock, who would later change his name to Rex Ingram, lived for a time as an eight-year-old at number one Pound Road in Nenagh West Urban according to the 1901 census. He would eventually become one of the most influential directors of the silent era with famous productions to his name like The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, His Robe of Honour and The Prisoner of Zenda. With a strong committee drawn from the immediate Nenagh area, a tremendous amount of work has been ongoing behind the scenes and all eyes are focussed on the next public meeting, which will be held on Friday January 20th. The venue and time will be The Hibernian Inn at 8pm and all are welcome. Counselling Depression
(Continued from last issue)
Research shows that social support is very important in combating depression. Those who meet stressful circumstances, and have low social support, are more likely to suffer depression. I am reminded of how stressful it can be for gay or lesbian people in some countries. Being gay or lesbian is simply a different sexual orientation to being heterosexual. Would we love our sons or daughters any less if they had a different sexual orientation! I don’t think so. I certainly hope not. Gone are the days, thankfully, when homosexuality was considered as being sick and unnatural. Yet psychiatrists considered it to be a mental disease until 1973. Not long ago, really. Prejudice and racism is an awful thing, and certainly contributes to depression. Sometimes this prejudice can lead to violence. There is no doubt that it once led to social isolation and fostered depression. I hope that this is not the case today in Ireland. Racism is the very opposite of social support, and hence a strong reason for depression. We need to remind ourselves that Ireland is now a multicultural society. It is easy for people like me, living in a rural area, to forget this. I recently did a course in the Rape Crisis Centre in Dublin stretching over several months, and walking down Grafton Street was like walking down any street in Europe. It was very interesting, and a real reminder for me of how this country has changed when I heard all those foreign languages being spoken. We may be part of Europe and travel a good deal, but we are an insular nation, and we have a long history of the philosophy of ourselves alone (sinn féin). Yet we absorbed many foreigners throughout the ages; think of the Danes and the Normans. But to be loving and human we must not hear the language or see the skin. We must see the human in all people. We must realise that depression afflicts all people, and it is important to offer support to those who come to live in this country. I find it depressing to read how some foreigners were exploited during the years of the Celtic Tiger. Exploitation leads to a sense of shame and worthlessness, some of the basic foundations of depression.

to emigrate. Emigrants underestimate the stresses caused by upheaval, loss and settlement. This is later compounded by social selection i.e. becoming part of the lower social class, culture, identity and racism. Material deprivation and alcohol misuse are also part of the mix. Depression is most closely associated to those who work in construction, which is an unsettled and, from my own experience of working on building sites in London, a tough experience. Irish women on the other hand, make more careful plans for emigration, tend to find settled accommodation in service occupations, and are more likely to be involved in social networks. Of course, as education became more widespread in Ireland and more people went to third level colleges, many well-educated Irish people emigrate nowadays, get good jobs, earn good salaries, and do not encounter such negative experiences. Refugees are equally, if not more, vulnerable to depression. It is not always easy to identify depression in refugees to facilitate treatment. Many refugees come to Ireland because of traumatic events in their own country, and may be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Then they may become further victimised and depression prone because they have to justify coming here by recalling the abuse they suffered. Sometimes this is traumatic and they may not be able to do so.

Jim O’Shea’s new book called Abuse, about domestic violence, We Irish have experienced this as mi- workplace grants, and it is worth noting that Irish and school migrants to Britain have higher rates of bullying is depression than other minority ethnic groups. Louise Ryan, a sociologist in Middlesex University and her colleagues found that Irish male migrants, in particular, were more susceptible to depression than Irish female emigrants. They put it down in part to poorly planned migration in which men ventured forth in a spirit of excitement, unlike women who were more reluctant

Healthy Hair Healthy Body Health is something many people don’t tend to think about until something happens. Health is also not something that comes to mind when getting the hair done in a hair salon. However, it can be a very serious health issue for some people. In the average hair salon, you can be exposed to many different chemicals without even realising. Some people have had very serious allergic reactions after spending many years getting their regular hair colour done. As time goes by, more and more chemicals are being created by the chemical companies. We are on average exposed to many more hundreds of chemicals than our parents were and their parents before them. What does this all mean to the average person? It means that they have up to and around 300 synthetic chemicals acquired from food, drugs and personal care products in their system. The combined effect of all these chemicals is entirely unknown.
Plants and herbs are the answer. Henna, for example, has been used quite effectively to colour hair. It’s messy if you try to use it at home, but it’s a very healthy option. It has no chemicals and it’s a treatment for hair and scalp too. Henna has come a long way and can be used just as effectively as a chemical colour with great results and can in fact, look a lot better and more natural than the chemical option. That’s why I use it in my salon Eco Hair. I refuse to submit to chemicals out of convenience. Henna takes a little longer but it has so many benefits to me, the hairdresser, by not having to breath in any nasty chemicals, and to you, the customer, by not having to worry about what impact it might have on your health.
Our health is our wealth and we really should take care. Prevention is by far a better option than cure.
It’s not all bad news though. For many thousands of years, we as humans have been using nature and we still can. It’s a choice.
