Thurles Crokes Athletic Club Get fit for 2012 with a 6km challenge. Starting on 3rd May at 7pm in Crokes Field, walk, jog or run over seven Thursday nights. Trevor’s Kitchen Garden By Trevor Sargent We’re mentioning gardening and growing books a lot this year, but that’s simply because there’s such a good crop of Irish ones! The latest is Trevor’s Kitchen Garden: A Weekby-Week Guide to Growing Your Own Food, by former Minister for Food and Horticulture Trevor Sargent. Trevor Sargent has been growing food in a small back garden for over thirty years. This makes the book perfect for anyone who wants to get started with a few food plants – Sargent understands how to work in a small space. He starts his growing year in line with the start of the Celtic spring in the first week of February. And here the book becomes more than simply a how-to-grow manual. Each chapter, which covers a month, begins by discussing the agricultural associations of month names. The end of the chapter covers ‘the bigger picture’, putting food growing in context. For example, at the end of

Tipperary Clubs Draw The 2012- 2013 Tipperary GAA Clubs Draw is being promoted in divisions and clubs at present and it is great to report a widespread positive response to the new draw, which is celebrating its silver jubilee this year. The draw is an essential source of funds for clubs and the county board and without it much of the games and other development work that goes on in the county would not be possible. The Tipperary GAA archives website, www.tippgaaarchives.com, is a fund of interesting information on Tipperary teams and players from the past. A quick look at Tipperary’s inter-county performances in 1912 reveals that the county only played a total of 8 championship games in hurling and football for that year and one of the games was actually played in 1913. In senior hurling, they defeated Clare in the Munster semifinal by 3-3 to 2-3 before losing the Munster final to Cork in Dugarvan by 5-1 to 3-1. In senior football, the only outing was a Munster semi-final defeat to Clare by 2-2 to 1-0. The junior hurling followed the senior hurling pattern with a semi-final win over Clare by 10-2 to 0-0 and a final defeat to Cork by 5-4 to 3-1/ The junior football team was the jewel in the crown that year with a 3 match campaign that yielded the All Ireland title. In Munster, Tipp defeated Clare by 5-4 to 0-1 in the semi-final and Cork by 0-5 to 0-2 in the final. They then played Louth in the All Ireland final at Croke Park (played in February 1913) and won by 1-4 to Tipperary GAA Scene 1-3. Some of the attendees to the Nenagh Silent Film Festival Committee’s screening of The Artist were Tony Tormey (Paul Brennan) and Eimear Morrissey (Emily Mahon) from the popular soap opera Fair City, and also politicians: Minister of State Alan Kelly TD, Nenagh Mayor and County Councillor Virginia O’Dowd and Nenagh Councillor Lalor McGee. Speaking afterwards, Tony Tormey commented that: “It was a fantastic evening. I never knew the people of Nenagh were so glamorous. It’s great that the people of North Tipperary are giving the initiative such support. It augurs very well for a successful festival in Nenagh next February. All of this activity bodes well for the potential there is for the Nenagh Silent Film Festival, and it gives the NSFF Committee an opportunity to showcase what the community of Nenagh and environs can expect during the inaugural Nenagh Silent Film Festival next February. The NSFF Committee are elated with the success of the night and the support they achieved on the night and they want to thank Mr Gleeson of the Nenagh Ormond Cineplex, James Kelly of Úna Powell’s public house, and also all of the providers of spot-prizes on the night: Ted Knight, Cinnamon Alley, Nicolas Moss and Uná’s. The Old Dog An old Dobermann starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. We are excited to have this opportunity to convey Health Information regarding Physiotherapy to the readership. We decided, as our introductory piece, not to choose a specific diagnosis or condition to discuss, but a topic that affects all of us, young and old, every day-""Sitting Posture ". Patients present here to our clinic daily, with postural related pain, from sitting incorrectly at home, school, work, in the car and at the computer. Poor sitting posture places the ligaments and soft tissues of the spine under abnormal stretch, eventually leading to pain. A "Good" sitting position should maintain the normal spinal curves found when a person stands in the fully erect position. A very easy way to improve sitting posture is the "slouch-overcorrect” procedure. The person must sit slouched on a backless chair or stool, allow the lower back to rest in the fully flexed position and permit head and chin to protrude forwards. Then he/she must smoothly move into the overly erect sitting position, with the lower back curve or lordosis at its maximum with the head held directly over the rest of the spine and the chin pulled in. This sequence should be repeated in a flowing and gentle manner, so that the person is moving from the extreme good position to the extreme bad position. The ideal "good" position is to move to the extreme of the above good position

and then release the last ten per cent of the movement. Another thing to think about is thiswould you hold your arm directly out in front of you for longer than twenty minutes? Your arm muscles would fatigue and you would suffer some element of discomfort. We should understand that this also happens with the muscles and ligaments of our spine when we sit for prolonged periods. To reduce the chances of straining these soft tissues and to avoid increasing pressure in the discs, we should all use sitting postures as described above and where possible take short breaks every twenty to thirty minutes- get up, walk around, shake out your limbs and then return to the good sitting position again. It is important to remember that each person is an individual, so when reading a self help article, it should be noted that what works for one person may not help another. If you are concerned about your posture or postural related problems please see your doctor or" chartered physiotherapist." If you decide to consult a physiotherapist always ensure that he/she is chartered. Counselling Depression

The Sexual Dysfunction Information Bureau, based in Dublin, also makes the point that loss of self-esteem, poor self-image, anxiety and tension during the andropause, leading to depression, may contribute to erectile dysfunction. Indeed, any negative life events leading to depression may lead to erectile dysfunction. In such cases it may be a combination of these events and depression that are responsible for the dysfunction. The relationship between depression and sexual problems extend beyond erectile dysfunction to, for example, low sexual interest. Research has shown that depressed people have a low rate of sexual interest, and those with a low sexual interest have a higher propensity for depression. I want to make some simple suggestions for coping with depression and with ageing during the menopause and the andropause. If you are in the habit of reading these articles, I suggest you look back on the articles on abuse, and have another look at the section on self-care, and the points made under physical, psychological, mental and spiritual self-care. I keep on repeating that exercise is vital in the context of good health and depression. Walking and swimming are very good forms of exercise. Many towns now have gymnasiums and swimming pools. Cardiovascular and muscle conditioning help to delay the aging process. On the other hand it is also important to relax and have periods of rest. I always try to have a nap (several in fact!) during the day. Some people get frustrated and worried if they cannot sleep. Try not to worry about that. If I cannot sleep I sometimes get up and have a cup of milk and a slice of toast. I find that this brings more calm to me and enables me to get some sleep. Having your tea after six in the evening is not a good habit, especially if it is a substantial meal. It takes a long time for food to digest, and a heavy stomach is not conducive to sleep. You know as well as I that drinking too much and smoking are bad for the health. As I have written earlier, there is a link between depression and alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant. A good diet is also important during these years, and indeed at any time in life. Having three meals a day of good food is important. Take account of the physiological changes occurring during the menopause and andropause and adjust your food accordingly. Good self-care should be your motto. Aging is a reality, and at this time, at any rate, is unavoidable. Perhaps with increased knowledge of genetic engineering the aging process may be slowed. But, not right now. So try and reconcile your-

self to it. Try and accept it. It’s going to happen. I have already explained developmental psychology, which posits that in order to be able to accept old age, we must have negotiated other stages of our life, from childhood onwards. I believe this, and if you find yourself over-disgruntled at getting old, it might be wise to have a few sessions of counselling whereby you can review your life. I believe that it is possible to enjoy oneself in old age. I have no intention of retiring from writing or counselling until I have to. I will continue to set dance for as long as I am able. I know people well into their seventies set dancing. Why not! Remember that getting older does not make you wiser, but it gives you experience. Use your life experience to enrich the lives of other people, and particularly your family. It is good to give and to receive, to bring joy to others. Continue to educate yourself. Education helps us to grow and become more self-aware. You will bring your life experience to the place of education. Fill your life as much as possible. Broaden your horizons. Travel and experience other cultures. It is worth noting that depression can be helpful. As you come out of it you may see situations and relationships more clearly, and you will get the strength and wisdom to make important changes that you may have avoided. In my final article I will give you an unusual way of looking at depression and coping with it.
