TOP 150 WORKPLACES Employees weigh in on what can make a job great — and which Iowa employers do those things best

TOP WORKPLACES: HOW WE GOT THE RESULTS OUTREACH WorkplaceDynamics reaches out to employers with at least 35 employees in Iowa to participate. It uses a combination of print and online ads and direct outreach to employers using direct marketing lists.
EMPLOYEE SURVEY Employees are surveyed at participating employers using either a paper or online survey application. Responders rank each statement on a seven-point scale, ranging from “Strongly Disagree” to “Strongly Agree,” so the score shown is the percentage of responders who answered “Slightly Agree,” “Agree” or “Strongly Agree” to each statement. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to employee engagement.
RESPONSE REQUIREMENTS A response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in Iowa is required. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Iowa employees must have at least 30 respondents. At least 500 employees must be included in the random sample for employers of 2,500 or less. For those employers over 2,500 but fewer than 5,000 employees, 20 percent minimum distributed is required. For employers with 5,000 or more employees at least 1,000 surveys must be distributed.
TESTING FOR QUESTIONABLE RESULTS After the survey is complete, a series of statistical tests is run to look for questionable results. A small number of employers are disqualified based on those tests.
SELECTION OF TOP WORKPLACES Employers are categorized into size bands, because smaller employers tend to score higher than mid-size employers, and mid-size employers tend to score higher than large employers. The employers are then ranked within their size band, based solely on employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each size band are then selected as the Top Workplaces in Iowa for 2017 and listed on the Top Workplaces Summary page.

HOW TO GET GOOD WORKERS TO STAY PUT AND BE CONTENT MIKE TRAUTMANN n a state where unemployment is a measly 3 percent and employee loyalty seems to be a fading notion, retaining quality workers is more important than ever. But how do you do it? It seems that question gets tougher every year, as employers try new and different ways to keep workers from walking out the door for a better or newer opportunity. Well, let me introduce you to some Iowa businesses that have found the answer — or at least their employees think so. They are this year’s batch of Iowa Top Workplaces. And there’s more of them than ever before — 150, to be precise, in areas as diverse as investment, real estate, healthcare, education and food service. Our research partner, WorkplaceDynamics, asked employees to nominate the state’s top workplaces and tell us why they are the best. That’s what Top Workplaces is all about —
I
measuring the ingredients that employees say make good workplaces, and then objectively calculating which are the very best. Inside, you’ll find 150 small, medium and large businesses, ranked by those employee responses. You’ll see, in the employees’ own words, what sets those businesses apart and pick up tips that can help your workplace. What they say, by and large, is that while perks are nice, they won’t set a workplace apart from all its competitors. What makes a workplace great is the feeling that employees are doing work that they feel is important, that contributes to a clear vision of where the company is going and how it plans to get there. Disappointed your workplace didn’t make the list? You’ll have another chance next year. You can nominate your employer and encourage managers to participate. The survey takes no more than a few minutes, and there’s no charge. The recognition is worth the investment. Mike Trautmann is a content strategist for The Des Moines Register.

NO. 1 LARGE COMPANY VGM GROUP INC.
EVERYONE ‘PART OF THE FAMILY’ AT VGM GROUP IN WATERLOO KEVIN HARDY KMHARDY@DMREG.COM
he first thing to know about VGM Group Inc. is that it’s employees own the place, thanks to an employee stock ownership plan, also known as an ESOP. “We’re 100 percent employee-owned. This business is completely owned by the staff here,” said Amy Streeter, manager of talent acquisition and development for the business services company. “When you talk about companies that value employees, that is very true about VGM.” That ownership sets the tone for employees in the Waterloo headquarters and across the country, Streeter said. People take pride in the company, she said. And they’re empowered to make decisions and problem solve on their own. “I’ve never worked at an organization that puts so much confidence in individuals to make decisions,” she said. “It’s not micromanaged. Its extremely macro-managed.” When asked to describe the company in a survey, VGM workers routinely used the word “family,” Streeter said. When employees have children, they’re gifted VGM-branded onesies. Families are encouraged to bring their families to VGM’s on-site fitness center. And the company offers regular events that blend family into the workplace, whether it’s free family tickets to watch Waterloo Black Hawks hockey games or family movie nights at VGM’s farm, an events venue, complete with carnival games and picnic foods. “For employees to want to

Q&A WITH AMY STREETER VGM’S MANAGER OF TALENT ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT
Q. What’s one benefit or perk you offer that makes your workplace stand out? A. I can only say one? I would have to say the ESOP. Having that employee stock ownership program is really huge. It’s a significant match to our employees’ salaries. It is extremely significant what they get in stock ownership. Q. What’s your biggest challenge in attracting qualified candidates? A. We’re in Northeast Iowa and not in a big metro so we don’t have a large population to pull from. We have over 900 employees, 80 percent of them here in Waterloo. We’ve grown drastically over the last six years.

“He asked a question about my wife’s job that we had talked about 6 or 7 months back,” Lister said. “...We obviously all have a job here to do here, but everyone cares about what’s going on in the lives of everyone else.” Mindy Casterton-Humpal,
who works in client sales, said her personal connections with other team members has kept her at VGM for nearly 14 years. “I know that’s why I have stayed here,” she said, “but I think that’s the case for a lot of our associates.” The company has always had a unique culture, she
Q. How do you show employees they are part of something meaningful? A. Being employee-owners, it doesn’t matter if you are a part-time, hourly person, you’re contributing to the bottom line of VGM’s success. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’re paid, or what position you are, you have a huge value to the organization and you provide contributions to this company.
said. But the employee stock ownership plan has created an even more palpable sense of ownership among the staff. “I really honestly believe that the vast majority, if not
100 percent of our associates, do not look at what they do here as a job,” Casterton-Hampal said. “I believe that everyone has a level of personal investment here.”

Todd Nash, an Edward Jones regional leader for southeast Iowa, who works as a financial adviser out of a Coralville office, said there are probably many reasons why the company has been recognized as one of Iowa’s Top Workplaces

this year, for the sixth year in a row. But one of the best parts of the job, in his opinion, is the close relationships financial advisers can build with their clients and the individual communities where they work. “It’s the satisfaction that we have ... in building relationships with our clients. They become really special,” Nash said. Edward Jones provides financial services — from college savings to retirement — for individual investors in the United States and, through its affiliate, in Canada. As an example, Nash

fresh-cut flowers from her garden to his office, he said. He said it’s “gratifying” to help clients reach their financial goals. “Our clients rely on us,” he said. Edward Jones also gives back to the community, which helps employees feel meaningful, Nash said. For example, his team in southeast Iowa has participated in Alzheimer’s walks, as the memory loss disease has affected some of their clients who seek help with retirement. “We want to make a meaningful difference,” he said.

5 KEYS TO A BETTER WORKPLACE DOUG CLAFFEY CEO OF WORKPLACE DYNAMICS What distinguishes a Top Workplace from an average one? The truth is, there’s no single practice, no one-size-fits-all solution for achieving great results. But there are common qualities of success you should be able to identify in every company. We know from our decade of research it’s not perks or “coolness” that makes the difference. The best employers carefully craft a positive workplace culture. We also know these organizations on The Des Moines Register list of Top Workplaces for 2017 share a common foundation that supports a healthy culture — and employee engagement. Here are five key lessons:
1. PEOPLE REALLY ARE THE GREATEST ASSET: It goes beyond lip service. It’s a core principle that’s brought to life every day, with leadership putting employees at the center of their thinking. Done right, the feeling is returned: Employees consistently tell us that a sense of appreciation and confidence in leadership are among the most important factors for their workplace satisfaction. 2. LEADERS LISTEN: The best leaders listen to the feedback provided by employees both formally and informally. While some leaders might dwell on the inherent risks of giving employees a voice, leaders at Top Workplaces are clued in to their team’s challenges and use this knowledge in decision-making. This builds a sense of commitment and accountability. 3. EVERYONE IS IN THE LOOP: It’s difficult to be fully committed if you’re kept in the dark. Employees want to be well-informed. Leaders in Top Workplaces recognize this. They’re committed to sharing information as much — and as often — as they can. And they don’t just share the happy news. Organizations that fail to communicate with staff on a regular basis, substantively, will leave an information void. That gap will be filled quickly with rumors and speculation. 4. LIVE WITH A PURPOSE: Employees want to feel their work contributes to something meaningful. Effective leaders deliver an inspiring vision, which the entire team connects with day to day. In 2016, among
the top 10 percent of companies we surveyed nationwide, 96 percent of employees reported feeling motivated. Compare that to the bottom 10 percent of organizations (which most closely represent a “typical” workforce), where just 62 percent of employees felt motivated. This 34 percentage-point gap represents a massive drop in productivity. Motivation matters. 5. BUILD COMMUNITY: Neuroscience teaches us the importance people place on feeling accepted and safe in their “tribe.” It helps them stay focused and contributes to success. In forging productive employee experiences, Top Workplaces care about building community. They hold regular, purposeful events that foster a sense of belonging. That sense of appreciation also keeps employees connected. We see it in the WorkplaceDynamics survey comments, like this one from an employee at Storm Lake-based Central Bank: "Open communication and brainstorming is welcome here. It is a true teamwork atmosphere where everyone benefits by working together.” The best workplaces always look to improve. After all, it’s a journey, not a destination. Even topranked companies will find things to work on in a process of continuous improvement. If done right, employees will know their workplace is special. Employers shouldn’t be shy asking for extra effort in return. Ensure staff remains active in the ongoing success of the organization — with all the necessary accountability. And remember to celebrate along the way.
We have a lot of talented people to thank for this award: Our associates. When there are lots of individuals behind an accomplishment, who do you thank first? At U.S. Cellular®, it’s our associates. These talented team members empower our success with their commitment to creating world-class customer experiences. Their unrelenting passion, innovation, and drive for excellence have helped us to earn a place among the Des Moines Register’s Top Workplaces 2017. This recognition is important to us, because we are a technology company about people. And our people display exceptional talent and ambition in moving our Dynamic Organization forward with unique insights, ideas, and ambitions. If you want to be part of something truly special, we offer excellent opportunities to join our team in a number of exciting professional areas. To learn more, please visit: uscellular.jobs

We offer them the opportunity to build their business how they want so they are able to excel.” Q: WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN ATTRACTING QUALIFIED CANDIDATES? A: “One of our challenges is the old stereotype that it is easy to do real estate, that it is easy to do sale and get business. MEDIREVV CEO CREDITS SUCCESS TO ITS WORKPLACE CULTURE KELLY MCGOWAN KMCGOWAN@DMREG.COM
ediRevv is celebrating 10 years in business this year and the company’s leader predicts faster growth and expanded offerings in the next decade. The company, which works in coding and revenue cycle management for hospitals, physician groups and other healthcare providers, now has 50 contracts in around 30 states, CEO Chris Klitgaard said. “We’ve just bootstrapped it,” he said. “We’ve grown by doing great things for our clients. We’ve experienced
M
steady, consistent growth these last 10 years and it doesn’t show any sign of slowing down.” Klitgaard credits the company’s success in part to a culture that balances hard work with flexible scheduling and opportunities to give back. An “ethos committee” organizes health and financial wellness programs for employees and plans philanthropic events like building homes, serving meals and donating to homeless shelters. Employees get two days each year of paid time to volunteer at a community nonprofit of their choice. As

part of a pay-it-forward campaign for the 10-year celebration, every month 30-40 employees are each given $10 to put toward a good deed in the community. Groups from the company have also visited schools in the Iowa City area to pay
students’ outstanding lunch account balances. The company strives for an inclusive environment where every worker can succeed personally and professionally, Klitgaard said. “Diversity is always a challenge by nature of where we live, but we are a very welcoming organization,” he said. “It doesn’t matter your race, creed, lifestyle or color — basically what we tell them is work hard and be yourself. Be authentic. And maybe even a little weird. “That’s what makes life interesting, and we try to bring that into the workplace.”

rian Wentz describes Keller Williams Realty as a bottom-up company. “We believe our company works for our people,” said Wentz, general manager of the real estate firm’s Iowa operations. “Most companies say their brand is their greatest asset. Well, we spend zero dollars on marketing the brand because we think our people are our greatest asset.” That outlook is evidenced by Keller Williams’ profit-sharing program — it has returned roughly $1.6 million to Des Moines area real estate agents in the past five years — and its commitment to training programs, Wentz said. “We provide an environment that allows (agents) to grow as a business and also personally,” he said. Based on employee surveys, Keller Williams was named one the state’s top workplaces for the third year

An influx of young agents are bringing energy and a new outlook to the company, Wentz said. “There is an electricity around the new agents,” he said. “The millennial generation has no limiting beliefs. They don’t come in with any preconceived notions about what they can do. They have are no limits or caps.”

The break — and the sense of unity it creates — is one of the things that CEO Buck Olsen said makes the company unique. “The culture here is a culture of engagement and we love it,” he said. “This is an organization that’s built on team.” Kate Juelfs, director of service at Foster Group, said the environment makes people feel comfortable and cared for at work. For as much care is placed on clients, she said care of employees is also a focus. That includes having fun together and giving back to the community in a group she

Q&A WITH FOSTER GROUP Q: WHAT’S ONE BENEFIT OR PERK YOU OFFER THAT MAKES YOUR WORKPLACE STAND OUT? A: We think about (PTO) in terms of free days. If you work here for six months, you have six weeks of free days. … When people are here, we want them focused, energized and ready to work. We are also extremely committed to the families our employees represent, so when we offer six weeks of free days, it's mandatory. We want people to rest, rejuvenate and play with their families Q: WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN ATTRACTING QUALIFIED CANDIDATES? A: In the industry, I think Des Moines would say attracting top talent is really challenging. We don’t have that challenge. … We’re looking for really high-character people. The most effective way for us to attract talent is by the people that already work here. The challenge that we have is — once we get a set of resumes — deciding who we actually want to bring in. Q: HOW DO YOU SHOW EMPLOYEES THEY ARE PART OF SOMETHING MEANINGFUL? A: From the first or second interview, it’s all about values. So from day one, they understand our heart — the heart of the organization around helping clients live meaningful lives and pursue generosity, whatever that means to them as clients. For the people that come on board, when they actually get to see the values, mission and vision of the organization, they get plugged in pretty fast.

said has “lived (its) commitment to generosity.” “We are a group of like-minded individuals that share the belief that we are called to serve,” she said. “We take extraordinary care of our clients and each other in ways that are unexpected.” Part of the company’s impact is evidenced in helping clients “grow in how they interact with money and use it to help the world,” she said. For Olsen, the impact is in freeing clients by reducing the complexity of their finances with the idea that money is a means, not an end. The organization is dedicated to helping people live
meaningful lives and be giving, he said. A generosity dashboard keeps track of clients’ contributions. “It’s not all about the dollar amount,” Olsen said. “It’s about the heart and the spirit of generosity. As we grow, helping people to be really effective at giving is going to continue to set them free.” That commitment to generosity continues in the company’s work in the community, he said. In addition to employee volunteer efforts, Foster Group invites a different local nonprofit to the office about once a month to serve them lunch and allow employees to interact and learn about the organization’s work.

YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE THIS RURAL BANK AN EMPLOYER OF CHOICE KEVIN HARDY KMHARDY@DMREG.COM
ob openings are a rarity at Home State Bank. When a position does open up, it’s usually because of the company’s growth, employee retirements, or employees leaving because a spouse landed a job away that necessitated a move. Home State Bank President and CEO Sid Jones.” It is the culture that attracts and it attracts like-minded people.” That culture has made Home State Bank an employer of choice for young people: about 40 percent of the bank’s payroll is under age 40 — all the more impressive given the bank’s location in Jefferson, Iowa, a community of about 4,300 people. “In a rural community, we take a lot of pride in that,” Jones said. “A lot of our most recent hires have sought us out as an employer.”

The days also include community service projects. “I think the one thing that we stress is to enjoy the journey in your profession,” Jones said. “And we try to make that possible here at the bank, not only through their professional development as an employee, but also the relationship they have with their fellow team members and allow them to interact with the community at the level they choose.”
