Fareway isn’t really about winning awards, said Indianola manager Kevin Miller. It’s about its customers, employees and other partners. Those relationships just seems to lead to awards like being voted best grocery store. The first Fareway opened in Boone in 1938. By 1965, the store opened in Indianola at 216 N. Howard St., the current home of McCoy True Value. The store moved to 1309 W. Second Ave. on March 8, 2000. The company is continuing to grow. It now has more than 100 stores around the Midwest, but has not changed its commitment to family values. All Fareway stores are closed on Sundays and holidays to allow employees to spend time with their families. The corporate website states that Fareway demonstrates “integrity, fairness and honesty in our relationships with customers, employees, vendors and suppliers.” Miller and his team of 85 employees take that very much to heart. Miller said the best part of his business is the customers the store serves. “We enjoy both our customers and the company we work for,” he said.

When Mike and Sarah Rosenberger saw a need for a local garbage hauler in 2011, they started their own. Today, TRM Disposal provides residential, rural and commercial trash collection or garbage pick up for Indianola and most of Warren County, said Sarah Rosenberger. They also offer recycling service for commercial clients and have added service for rural residents this year. “Our dedication to our customers has been repaid with customer loyalty and even customers referring others to our service,” said Sarah. “We feel our locally owned company serving our local community is definitely a win-win.” The company currently has four employees in addition to the owners. Mike Rosenberger, who owns the business has been in the trash and recycling business since 2006. He says it’s important to leave a client’s location as clean or cleaner than before his crews arrive. “We make customer service our number one priority,” said Mike. “Our goal is to treat everybody as our neighbor.”

Peoples Bank is now bringing banking to people – whenever or wherever they need it – with their new mobile banking and mobile deposit services. The new products make it easy for people to access their accounts or even deposit a check from their smart phones, said Kevin Halterman, president of the bank. “New products and services are continually being added as the need and demand arises,” he said. “With these products, we can enhance the banking experience for our customers.” That comes on top of the traditional

Peoples’ services, such as warm, home-baked cookies and providig loans for community development, local business opportunities, home loans and agriculture. But Halterman sees more than loans in those projects – he sees growth. “We’re a prime contributor to the success of Warren County,” he said. Since opening in 1998, the bank has added locations in Carlisle, Milo and Lacona. “We pride ourselves on being community servants and community minded,” said Halterman. “We appreciate our customers and are proud to be Warren County’s bank of choice.”

Uncommon Grounds

For a business with its roots deep in the past, Indianola Preschool remains very focused on the future. Indianola Preschool is the longest running preschool in the state of Iowa. Launched as a nursery school in 1955 at the First United Methodist Church, the preschool made its home over the years at several churches before relocating in 1986 to their current space. But that long history isn’t the key to success, said Kim Neessen, preschool director. “We are passionate about early childhood education and it’s ALL we do,” said Neessen. The preschool offers a true preschool experience, she said, with developmentally appropriate practices, field trips, special guests, family events and much more. “We provide that positive first step toward your child’s educational future in an enviornment that encourages creativity, and kindergarten readiness,” she said. All of that adds up to a center that is not just the oldest, but has been voted the Best of Warren County for eight consecutive years and recently became the only preschool in the county with a 5-star rating in the state of Iowa’s quality rating system.

The folks at Busy Bee Garden Center know what they’re selling. They know, because they grew it. “We make sure that every plant is grown well and is healthy so it performs well in our customers’ landscape, says Chelsey Soder, the owner of Busy Bee. “Since we grow our own flowers, we know what we’re selling. Soder said that gives them control of their product that you won’t see at the big box garden centers. “We grow beautiful plants, she said. “We carry a selection that you won’t find at a box store. The garden center offers more than 8,000 square feet of greenhouses and sells everything from annuals to vegetables to herbs, trees and shrubs. The business has expanded every year since it opened and Soder says it will continue to grow to provide increased selection and more space to grow plants. They also provide landscape design and installation services. Most importantly, said Soder, they offer inspiration – and that’s one of her favorite things about the center. “I like that I grow plants that inspire people to garden or grow food for their families, she said. “It brings me great joy to know that so many people share my love of gardening.

Indianola Glass Creations is a place to create much more than glass. The shop on the Indianola Square added Studio Bella in 2013, which offers canvas and ceramic painting classes, beaded jewelry, stained and fused glass arts. It’s also a place to have fun, said owner Rachel Hall offering party space for those who want something a little different for their next event. And for those who just want to stop, well, Indianola Glass Creations is ready to oblige. “We have one of a kind, handmade jewelry, stained and glass home decor and Covered Bridge and Summerset Wines, said Hall. The variety of items draws people from all around, including from as far away as Australia. The shop is open on the nights of Bike Down to I-Town, a monthly event on The Square, which helps draw in new customers. And in the end, those customers are Hall’s favorite part of the job. “I enjoy the people, she said, “and teaching them classes and getting them interested in the glass arts.

Selling a house is more than sticking a sign in the yard and waiting for the right buyer to come along. Karey Bishop of Iowa Realty says it’s much more. For Bishop, selling a home starts with pricing it correctly and making sure it is show ready and staged for buyers. “I guide them through the process from the very beginning to the closing,” she said. “There are many steps along the way, but I work to make it an efficient and pleasant process for my clients.” Bishop has been selling homes in Warren County and beyond since September 2005. The bulk of her business, though, rests in Indianola. In 2013, she closed 86 transactions – 84 of which were in Indianola. “I believe in Indianola,” she said. “It’s a great place to raise a family and be part of a community. I have developed lasting friendships with many clients over the years and welcome their calls and questions indefinitely. It’s rewarding to know how many of my clients have become friends.”

Wesley The Village began as a dream of Gene and Eleanor Smith, who organized a group of local business and community leaders to help bring a continuing care retirement community to Indianola. Almost 25 years later, it’s 37 acres of reality, with 225 people who call it “home,” said Julia Fitzhugh, marketing director. It’s large enough that new residents can find people from all walks of life and from all parts of the country, she said. “It creates a bond that is often described as a Village family,” Fitzhugh said. It’s a health family, as well. Residents of The Village traditionally are extremely active. “We enjoy seeing people coming to The Village and get involved and discover new passions,” she said. The facility creates an environment of

education and opportunity, where health choices and behaviors are encouraged and supported by a well-trained, professional wellness team. That team can care for residents through a variety of stages. Residents may come to The Village in one of the 43 town homes or one of 74 independent living apartments. As time goes by, and people need more support, they may move to one of 14 assisted living apartments, or one of the 36 rooms in the health center. There also is an 18-room CCDI memory support wing to care specifically for people with dementia. “No matter where you live on campus, there are convenient opportunities to continue to be the active person you’ve always been,” said Fitzhugh.

Celebrating Our 8th Year as the

Warren County’s best dance studio is also its newest. Indianola Dance Academy began in 2009, offering six-week classes through the Indianola Parks and Rec department. This year, directors Jessica Eginoire and Kaylie Jones opened a full-fledged studio, offering competition and beginner classes for students ages 2 through teens. “Our main goal of starting the studio and moving into our own location has been to provide a dance class to all students who wish to dance, regardless of ability to pay,” said Eginoire. “Teaching dance is an opportunity for us to share our passion for dance and help students expand their abilities and learn to love

dancing as much as we have.” The studio offers classes in tap, jazz, baton, hip-hop, ballet and technique. They plan to offer summer classes on Mondays and Tuesdays. Eginoire said they also plan to renovate their studio over the summer to have two studio spaces. “This will help us accommodate more students and give space for private lessons,” she said. They also hope to purchase mirrors for the studio. “We currently teach with few outside supplies,” she said. “We have music and a hard floor. It will be great to add more character to our studio to give our students more of a dance experience.”

Loyal customers keep Beauty by Design number one in Warren County, and a successful business, said Sarah Breeden. The salon now has four stylists working there, said Breeden and she hopes to add more this year. “We all have open minds and ideas that keeps us on top of the list when it comes to the place people want their hair done, she said. That includes everything from hair cuts and colors to specialty colors, perms and wedding and prom updos. They also offer facial waxing. But the services aren’t what keeps people coming back. “Loyalty to the customer and the consistency and quality behind 20 years of experience, bring people back repeatedly, Breeden said. “We have a friendly, carefree environment where our clients can relax and enjoy being pampered. That repays the stylists, as well. Breeden’s favorite part of the job? “The interaction with the people sitting in my chair.

Crouse Cafe has always been all in the family. Founded in 1946 by Bob and Cleo Crouse it has changed hands three times, always to a Crouse. Current owners John and Rhonda Crouse took over in 1991 and say they are looking forward to the day when Josh and Kristin Crouse take over from them. But while the owners may change, the food won’t, said Rhonda Crouse. “We add very few new products because we have found that most people want the foods we are known for,” she said. That includes a menu of pies, hand-breaded onion rings, tenderloins, chicken fried steaks and more. “We try to make as much as we can from scratch,” said Rhonda Crouse. The restaurant is known for its cherry pie and hot beef, both listed among the 100 things to eat in Iowa before you die. It’s important to John and Rhonda to be at the restaurant as much as possible, and they say they love to see children coming in, growing into adults, and eventually bringing their own kids in. Having family members in the restaurant to help take care of customers is a key to their success, she said, but they’re not the only ones. “We have several family members that care about our customers,” said Rhonda, “and other employees who are like family.”

Ron and Linda Mark’s main goal was only to make a really good bottle of wine. Today, Summerset Winery produces about 150,000 bottles of wine a year. The Marks opened Summerset Winery in 1997 and became one of the first estate wineries in Iowa. Since 2001, the winery has resided in a large, upscale barn that was designed to house a cellar, wine tasting room, gift shop, meeting room and grand banquet hall. The winery is a unique site for weddings, corporate meetings and other special events. Every Sunday is a special event with Sunday Tunes, with a number of area bands providing afternoon entertainment from 3 to 6 p.m. every Sunday. Spectators can enjoy the tunes, snacks, and of course, a glass of one of the almost two dozen wines Summerset produces from Iowa grapes, including Caba Moch, Harvest White and Blush, along with seasonal favorites like Ruby LaBelle, Mead and Festiva. Caba Moch is the most popular with 40-percent of the total wine sales from this wine alone.

Chumbley’s Auto Care 110 S. Jefferson Way, Indianola, 515-961-2594, chumbleysautocare.com Second place: Downey Tire Pros

Once upon a time, Indianola was home to 20 service stations. Today, there is one. Chumbley’s Auto Care has been working since 1957 to earn customers’ business. Founded by Wilbur Chumbley and his twin brother, Winton, the business passed through a few hands before Tim Davison bought half of it in 1999, and then added the other half in 2004. Davison says he’s proud to be following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, both of whom operated service stations along Hwy.

65/69. He says that he is never satisfied with the status quo. “Our business changes very fast,” he said. After working in the shop, he and his team spend evenings at industry events and classes, keeping up on the changes. The business has been named AAA standards for approved auto repair and the AAA “top shop” three years running. In 2013 the company was named the Automotive Service Association of the Midwest’s Facility of the Year. Best Fast Food A&W MICHAEL ROLANDS/RECORD-HERALD

Pete’s Pizza

118 N. Howard St., Indianola, 515-961-7797 Second place: Winn’s

After 40 years in business, don’t look for any big changes at Pete’s Pizza, says owner Billie Bingaman. “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” she said. She and her husband, Tim, bought the restaurant on the Indianola Square from Pete and Willie Seiler in 2000. They continue to serve the same recipes that the Seilers used, said Billie, although they have added a few items. They serve a long list of items, including, of course, pizza, but also sandwiches and appetizers. “Everything that can be homemade

Westview Care Center is prepared by Tim,” Billie said. “He’s a wonderful cook.” The goal of the business is to be family oriented, she said. And that includes making customers feel at home. “We want people to enjoy themselves and be comfortable,” she said. “We love meeting people and watching them have a good time and enjoying their great food. “We are very grateful to each and every customer,” she added. “Our customers are great.”

Westview Care Center may be tucked away in a corner of Indianola, just off Hwy. 92 west of Indianola, but for people who need a safe and caring place when they’re no longer comfortable living at home, or need rehabilitation from an injury, Westview Care Center is one of Warren County’s best kept secrets. “Westview has received a five-star rating and been named deficiency free by the state for the past four years,”

said Emily Roush, marketing director for the center. “Our staff has been with the company for many years, so residents feel comfortable and well cared for. Word of mouth is one of the ways that people hear about Westview, and they usually hear first about the quality of care. “We’re one of the first places hospital social workers call when they need a place for a patient needing rehabilitation,” said Roush.

Part of the reasons that customers keep coming back to the Danlee group of gas stations and convenience stores is because the employees keep coming back. The store managers have an average of 17 years experience with the company, and employees have low turn over as well, said Denise Johnson with Danlee. Launched in 1992, the company now includes 15 stores around the state, including the three in Indianola. They sell the usual candy, pop, chips and gas, but also add products such as gift items, e-cigs, deli food, yogurt and beer and alcohol. Johnson said they are one of the only independently owned

convenience store chains in Warren County, with large corporations their main competition. “We strive to provide great customer service and desired products to keep our customers coming back, said Johnson. They also work to support their local community through things like school loyalty cards, which offer discounts on gas purchases. All of these programs help build customer loyalty. “Our customers are in our locations three to five times a week, said Johnson. “We have created many lasting friendships through this contact.

In a world that thrives on speeding up, there’s not much that can slow us down. Susannah Paeper, owner of Portraits by Susannah, likes to think that she can. “I love that photography slows life down and allows us to see a moment or an expression that we might have missed,” she said. “I get to capture those moments.” Paepper opened her studio on the Indianola Square in 2012. She specializes in artistic portraiture for high school seniors, families, weddings, maternity and newborns and pets. “The thing that I think separates me from competitors is that I am

very open with my style of work,” she said. “I love to take risks and use my creativity to the fullest.” Paeper also likes to support the community as much as possible. The business donates to a variety of causes, but one of her favorites is Capturing Hopes. “This is a new opportunity to share our love with others in their time of need,” said Paeper. Capturing Hopes provides photos at no charge of families with children battling cancer or other life threatening illnesses. For more information on Capturing Hopes, go to capturinghopes.org.

With more than 6,000 members, the Indianola YMCA is by far the county’s largest fitness facility. But their charge goes far beyond just exercise, said Scott Kruthoff, director. The 115 employees of the Y work every day to help strength the community by focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, he explained. “We are much more than a fitness center or a pool,” said Kruthoff. “The strength of the Y has always been the people who join the center and move it forward.” The Y is constantly looking at and adapting programming to fit its membership, he said. The Indianola Y recently added medical

programming to help specific populations, such as diabetics. “We look forward to growth in who we are able to serve,” he said. Kruthoff emphasized that the Y is open to all, offering income-based membership fees and financial assistance for those who can’t afford the costs. Kruthoff said he is proud of the fact that the facility, which opened in August 2013, is home to three swim teams – the Indianola High School, Simpson College and Y swim teams, all use the pool at the facility. But he most enjoys the relationships with his members and volunteers at the center, he said. “I love seeing people change and reach their goals.”

Hunting may be a hobby for most folks, but preserving the results of that hunt for a lifetime is a profession for Tiffany and Rocky Scovel at Scovel Taxidermy. “Many taxidermists are just hobbyists, said Tiffany Scovel. “We run our shop as a business and we put our heart and soul into our work. That work includes preserving game animals such as whitetail deer, fish, bear and hogs. They offer beetled cleaned European service for all skulls and beetled cleaned turkey mounts.

The couple loves meeting people and hearing their hunting and fishing tales, but their favorite part is seeing all the amazing Iowa deer that come into their shop to be preserved. Scovel does more than preserve the results of the hunt. They also help fund projects to get the hunt started, supporting the Warren County Whitetails Unlimited Banquet, raising money for mentored deer hunts, Annette Nature center, Izaak Walton expansion, FFA and trap teams and 4-H shooting sports.
