PUBLISHER REMEMBERED
MILTON W. JONES A Desert Visionary adly, the Desert is saying goodbye to Milton W. Jones, the brilliant visionary who built a publishing empire, led by Palm Springs Life Magazine, and branded the Coachella Valley as one of the world’s premiere resort destinations. He died in May at the age of 84. Milt, as he was known, was a natural sales man and marketing genius who loved the desert’s beauty. During 57 years of shaping the desert’s image his publications showcased the desert lifestyle at its most glamorous. In 1957 young pharmacist Milton W. Jones arrived to open Cathedral City’s Center Drugstore. The town was a dusty rural outpost and only 32,000 souls lived in the Valley, now populated by 600,000. Milt enjoyed placing his drugstore ads and began selling KDES radio spots. He soon founded the Jones Agency, acquired Palm Springs Life and developed the Visitor’s Guide. Later, he added regional magazines. A workaholic, Milt could be found in his office even on Saturdays. His open door and dry humor were legion. Anyone who wanted to invest in the Valley sought his honest, but often tough advice. Meeting planners devoured his Annual September Issue, and retailers who suffered through summer slowdowns often were carried on the books until fall. The publisher pioneered merchandising and sports marketing. He was the sponsor and product matchmaker for the Bob Hope Classic and Dinah

Shore. This visionary had an instinct for timing. His regional magazine dovetailed the growth of that niche industry. He gained control over costs by embracing the digital age. He was one of the first to establish an Internet web site, bringing the Valley message worldwide. Milt also anonymously helped many individuals and causes. He believed you kept generosity quiet or it didn’t count. When desert history is written, Milt W. Jones will be the genius who made the desert one of the great tourism and year-around lifestyle destinations of the 21st Century.
