ART EXHIBITION COLORS OF THE WEST: The Paintings of Birger Sandzén April 17 thru September 12, 2010 Palm Springs Art Museum - McCallum Wing

Birger Sandzen, “The Timberline”, c. 1918, Oil on canvas, 36” x 48”

S

ven Birger Sandzén (1871-1954), a Swedish-born artist, trained in Paris and immigrated to the United States in 1894. Considered a post-impressionist for his use of color and expressionist in technique. Sandzén found the beauty of the Southwest and mountains “....a paradise for the painter”. Impressed by the scale and physicality of mountain structure and the intense brilliance of light and colors of the West, Sandzén applied the same coloristic sensibility to low lying lands of the prairies as he did to his monumental mountain scenes. During his 54-year career, his style evolved from pointillism to his personal style of bold color with thickly applied masses of paint earning him the title, “The American Van Gogh” Sandzén’s contribution to 20th century American

painting has yet to be fully recognized and appreciated. This exhibition showcases more then 60 paintings, watercolors and prints from the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery and family trust supplemented by a selection of important Sandzén artworks on loan from private collections including Edenhurst Gallery. This exhibition will be the FIRST major American museum exhibition of Sandzén’s artworks outside Kansas. Organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum in conjunction with the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, Lindsborg, Kansas. This exhibition is sponsored by the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation and funded in part by the Museum’s Western Art Council and the AmericanScandinavian Foundation.

May 29 – HEART The names Ann and Nancy Wilson are synonymous with the name, “Heart.” The ladies have a lot of it, and they should as the founding members of this hard rock band. Heart fans young and old can see Ann and Nancy and the whole band rock out at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino! Heart appears in the Special Events Center Saturday May 29th.

Frank Paganelli from Joshua Tree, CA came to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Sunday morning, March 21st to watch his friends bowl at Fantasy Lanes. After spending a few minutes at the lanes at Fantasy Springs with his friends, Frank wandered into the casino. Whether his positive attitude transcended the slot machine reels or whether Frank was just extremely lucky, he says he will be living a bit more comfortably now. After playing the machine that beckoned him for only a few minutes with $5.00 inserted, the Wheel of Fortune symbols lined up across the center of the screen and signaled that Frank won $272,121.95. I have never won anything remotely close to this amount of money before, says Frank. Fantasy Springs Resort Casino has paid out nearly $33 million in jackpots since March of 2009. You could be the next big winner from Fantasy Springs! Come and visit us now!

The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies celebrates happy days with its newest edition entitled Let The Good Times Roll! Now playing through May 16, 2010.

All season long, the Follies brings back the greatest good-time music of the 40s, 50s and 60s. From Big Bands and Swing to Doo-Wop, Motown and Pop, we played these songs on the jukebox, listened to them on our Hi-Fi’s, and watched them performed on TV, always in glorious black-and-white. Joining the Follies Man and his Legendary Line of Long-Legged Lovelies and Dapper Dans this season are world-renowned guest stars and remarkable variety acts making their Follies debut: Mary Wilson (March 30 – May 16, 2010) She made history as an original Supreme and will perform the hits of the world’s most famous Motown trio. Do you recall “Stop in the Name of Love”? Brad Cummings & “Rex” (All Season) You won’t want to miss Brad Cummings and his prehistoric sidekick, “Rex” the dinosaur. Cummings may well be the best ventriloquist in show business today! The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies has been seen by nearly three million patrons, and celebrates the music and dance of the 40s, 50s and 60s with a cast ranging in age from 56 to 86 years “young.” The show features lavish, Broadway-caliber production numbers and plays five days a week, through mid-May. The Follies is housed in downtown Palm Springs’ historic Plaza Theatre – a charming, neon-encrusted old movie house and an attraction unto itself! Box Office: (760) 327-0225 or www.psfollies.com.
