“Holmes & Watson” L-R Si Osborne, Richard Baird, Jacob Sidney, Drew Parker, Chrisopher M. Williams (seated) -Photo by Aaron Rumley By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) The dynamic duo of master sleuth Sherlock Homes and his redoubtable assistant, Dr. John Watson, M.D. are at it again. This time, however, they spring from the talented brain and clever pen of American playwright Jeffery Hatcher.

Mr. Hatcher is a prolific playwright who brings a long list of credits to the North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT) stage that span from Broadway to Regional Theatres from coast to coast. He is also considered by many to be an expert on the plays of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Whether one is a loyal fan of Sherlockian lore or just discovering the genre, Sherlock Holmes, has been mystifying readers, movie and

Body parts belonging to murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi have been found, according to Sky News sources, who added that he had been “cut up” and his face “disfigured.” With no photographic evidence to support the Sky News sources’ claim, gruesome and unverified images of body parts – supposedly Khashoggi’s – have been making the rounds in Arabic media. The sources’ claim echoes a statement by Doğu Perinçek, leader of the leftwing Vatan party on Monday night. Perinçek told Turkish

television that Khashoggi’s “body parts” had been recovered from a well in the Saudi consul’s garden, and added that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would explain the findings later on Tuesday. The news comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded Saudi officials reveal the whereabouts of Khashoggi’s remains after the Saudi government admitted Khashoggi had been murdered, albeit in a “fist fight” with officials inside the consulate in Istanbul.

theatre audiences with his uncanny ability to solve the most difficult of crimes since the late nineteenth century. North Coast Rep artistic director David Ellenstein has a penchant for selecting interesting plays for his theatre audiences. With his selection of playwright Hatcher’s new drama/mystery “Holmes & Watson”, and as the director of this clever play, Ellenstein subliminally tosses out a gentle unstated challenge

to his patrons. Can the audience solve this clever mystery before his creative cast does it for them? It may sound easy but the audience has to pay strict attention to what’s taking place on stage in order to win the brass ring of the “aha moment”. Hatcher’s extremely well-plotted play is not easily boiled down to a bare bones explanation without spoiling some of aspects of the ending. However, the story

in short, revolves around three men, residing inside a Scottish insane asylum who claim to be Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle deliberately left his last published episode about England’s fictional greatest detective with an ambiguous conclusion, in case he decided to write a sequel. earing up for a big crowd at your holiday festivities can provide moments of excitement, stress, fun and plenty of other emotions as the big dinner draws near. This year, avoid any nagging feelings of doubt with this step-by-step guide to prepare for large gatherings. Plan in advance. Even if you’re typically the last-minute type, the hectic holiday season is no time to wait until a few days ahead of the celebration to throw meals and more together. Instead, be sure to put together a guest list and send invites at least a few weeks out. Take inventory of supplies like silverware, plates, serving dishes and any accessories you’d like to feature at the table. Make an outline of the food each guest is bringing, or, if you’ll supply all the food, ensure there will be plenty for everyone – don’t forget to take into account special diets or allergies. Make a list. Planning only takes you so far if you don’t write everything down. Once the menu is determined, list out what you’ll need to make the magic happen. Don’t forget to jot down easily overlooked items that can be picked up the day of, such as ice. Remember to thaw. One surefire way to make the big day a big disaster is to forget to thaw your main course. If you’re planning to roast a turkey – perhaps the most common centerpiece – remember it takes around a day to thaw for every two pounds of meat. So, for example, it could take close to a week for a 14-pound turkey to fully thaw prior to cooking. Prep the day before. There are many tasks (big and small) that can be taken care of the day before guests arrive, making the holiday less stressful for hosts. From whipping up simple appetizers like dips to giving the house a thorough cleaning, there’s plenty of pressure that can be taken off your shoulders 24 hours in advance. If you really want to make the big day a breeze, consider cooking your main dish, slicing the meat and placing it in reheating pans one day prior. Create a schedule. No matter how far in advance you plan or how much prep you complete prior to the festivities, there will always be dayof work to be done. With guests coming in and out, it can be helpful to lay out what’s known as a “fire list,” which details times chronologically for when things need done, such as starting the oven to warm the turkey or simply remembering to lay out dessert following the meal. Taxes and Divorce: How it Works

By Janice Gough Divorce is an emotional blow, but with sound financial advice, it doesn’t have to be a tax hit as well. 1. Tax filing status. Divorcing couples can file their taxes as married filing jointly, married filing singly or as single and head of household. If you’re married on Dec. 31, you’re married for that tax year. That’s a planning opportunity. At $450,000 a year, you’re in the highest tax bracket for a single person but not if you’re married. In this situation, being married is a tax benefit, so maybe we push

the divorce into the following year. On the other hand, if you each make $250,000 a year, as single people, you’re not in the highest bracket, but as married people you are. Probably better to get the divorce done this year. Married filing jointly is usually the right way to go, though married filing separately might make sense if one spouse has a lot of medical expenses, If there’s any question that the spouse is creating tax trouble, file individually. Clients who plan to reclaim the names that they had before marriage shouldn’t use that name on a tax return until they have filed the change with Social Security. 2. Dependency Exemption. The custodial parent, or the parent with whom the child spends more nights, is usually the person who gets a dependent credit. But parents can trade the dependency credit if one makes too much or too little to benefit from the loan. You can still qualify as head of household if you’ve been living apart for more than six months and you provided more than half the cost of a home for your child. Parents can also alternate who claims the child credit from year to year. 3. Sale of principal residence exclusion. For those filing singly, $250,000 of the gain on the primary residence is tax-free; the number is $500,000 for those married and filing jointly. Usually, it is better to have more substantial exclusion. Either spouse can meet the ownership test. You must use the home as

your principal residence for two of the last five years. 4. Mortgage interest deductions. Taxpayers are limited to deducting $1.1 million for acquisition and home equity indebtedness. Recently, a court allowed unmarried taxpayers who own a home together to each apply the $1.1 million limitations. 5. Deductions related to divorce. Legal fees for divorce aren’t deductible, nor are legal costs related to collecting child support. But clients can deduct expenses associated with collecting alimony, tax advice, and the management, conservation or maintenance of property that is held for producing income. 6. Allocation of tax carryovers. In general, the tax code treats marital and individual property differently. Charitable contribution carryovers are figured by the ratio of amounts that would have carried forward if the couple had filed separate returns in the year of contribution. Capital loss carryovers are based on the individual net losses that created the remainder. 7. Payments after divorce: child support, alimony, and life insurance. Child support payments are neither tax deductible nor taxable. Alimony payments are both tax deductible and taxable, and a recipient may need to pay estimated taxes on alimony. For alimony to be tax deductible, it must be required under the divorce or written separation agreement, paid in cash, end at the recipient’s death and

not designated as anything other than alimony. Former spouses must live in different households. Excessively high or front-loaded payments in the first three years after the separation can be taxed. Life insurance policies are one way to ensure that alimony and child support will continue to be paid even if the payer dies. Premium payments may be deductible as alimony but not if the insured spouse retains policy ownership or the policy is inside an irrevocable life insurance trust. Support trusts instead of alimony are another way to ensure continuing payments. They offer less interaction between former spouses, can protect ownership of closely held family businesses and continue support even after the grantor dies. They are subject to the rules for trusts, not alimony, so there is no issue around front-loading. 8. Qualified retirement plans in divorce. A qualified domestic relations order can let divorcing spouses roll part of one spouse’s pension plan into an individual retirement account for the other with no tax on the rollover and the early distribution penalty waived. That doesn’t necessarily mean that a rollover is a right choice. A rollover offers distance from a former spouse, greater control over investments, more beneficiary designation options, the potential to deduct fees and no mandatory withholding. Staying in the former spouse’s pension plan, on the other hand, can mean fund access for those younger than

59 1/2, possible protection from creditors, loans and hardship distributions, and an option to retain life insurance. You can leave some money in the ex’s plan and roll over some of it. There is no time limit on the rollover. IRA transfers are also not taxable, and they let the recipient name his or her beneficiaries. It is crucial to make sure that one change beneficiary designations for retirement plans, insurance policies, and trusts. They should also name new health care agents to make decisions in case they aren’t able to do so. I have yet to meet a client who says, ‘Yes, I still really love that person and want my ex to get everything. A former spouse can and will get the money if you don’t update beneficiaries. This is the diligence we need to provide as advisers to clients in divorce situations. Those younger than 59 1/2, possible protection from creditors, loans and hardship distributions, and an option to retain life insurance. You can leave some money in the ex’s plan and roll over some of it. There is no time limit on the rollover. By Desert Star Staff GRESHAM, Ore. -- A proposed rule from the Federal Communications Commission could cripple funding for local community media outlets. The outlets, also known as public, educational and governmentaccess television, make up thousands of channels across the country and broadcast a variety of content, such as distance education courses and candidate forums. Cable companies currently fund them in exchange for use of public lands to hook up consumers to their services. Under the proposal, local municipalities would have to pick up the tab. Martin Jones, president and chief executive at MetroEast Community Media, said this could seriously hamper people’s access to information. “It could destroy the ability to deliver transparency in government to everyday citizens by our government channels, when we broadcast council meetings that most

people can’t leave work to go to,” Jones said; “the school board meetings, the water commission meetings, the planning commissions meetings.” These channels have historically been considered “in-kind” resources. Under the FCC proposal, a monetary value would be assigned to them and included in what’s known as a franchise fee paid by cable companies and capped at 5 percent of their gross revenue. The agency has argued this fee and in-kind contributions impede innovation and are a barrier to the market for cable companies. The FCC did not respond to a request for comment. Mike Wassenaar, president and CEO of the Alliance for Community Media, called this proposal a backdoor attempt to drain the coffers of local government on behalf of the cable industry. “It forces local governments into a position to say either they can take the

money to be able to pave roads or pay for fire department or other services, or they could have to give up the channels that they use to communicate with their citizens,” Wassenaar said. “And we think that’s not a fair bargain.” Wassenaar said local governments in some places still are struggling out of the recession from a decade ago, and that means community media there is hurting too. But, he said, community media stations in other places

actually are thriving in a time of increased interest in localism ... “... at a time when major media outlets are turning their back on local communities,” he said. “And we’re actually seeing a renewed interest in people thinking about their place and thinking about information about their place and the information needs of people in their neighborhoods.” The public can comment on this proposal through November 15 on the FCC’s website.

NC Council of Churches Opposes 6 Ballot Issues

Yard signs asking people to vote against the amendments are found across the state. (Schell Simpson/Protect the NC Constitution) By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – “Nix All Six” is the message on yard signs across North Carolina in reference to the six constitutional amendments

on the November ballot. While the amendments have their supporters, opponents have emerged, including civil rights groups and former state governors.

Joining their ranks are now several major church denominations in the state that are concerned about the impact on North Carolinians. “This is a true erosion

of the democratic principles of North Carolina,” states Jennifer Copeland, executive director of the N.C. Council of Churches. “It’s been said before that the North Carolina constitution in many ways is stronger than the U.S. Constitution, so the need to tamper with it should be taken quite seriously. “ The proposed constitutional changes include a voter ID requirement, cap on the state income tax and two measures to shift more political power to the General Assembly and away from the governor. Supporters say the amendments are needed for a variety of reasons, including to protect against voter fraud and ensure state growth. Copeland says people of faith should take particular issue with the amendments, including the way they are worded on the ballot.

“All six of them are bad because of the undemocratic way that they’re put before the people and the misleading way that they are described,” he states. “People of honor should not lie when they are given positions of power and privilege, so that’s a reason to throw all six of them out. “ Copeland and others want to make sure people understand that to oppose the amendments, voters must select “against” on all six choices on the ballot. The North Carolina Council of Churches is also part of the statewide effort against the amendments. The drive is called By the People and includes veterans, teachers, government leaders and other concerned citizens groups such as NC Justice Center, Democracy North Carolina and the NAACP.

Election Day: More Polling Places on Nevada Tribal Lands

By Desert Star Staff RENO, Nev. – During the 2016 election, two Nevada Native American tribes – the Pyramid Lake Paiute and the Walker River Paiute – won a federal lawsuit to get voter registration sites and polling places on tribal lands. In the upcoming election, even more polling places will be available throughout Nevada’s Native American communities. Stacey Montooth, who is enrolled with the Walker River Paiute nation and works for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, says opening up more voting sites for Native Americans is a critical change. She says her grandmother, who is over 90 and doesn’t drive, in previous elections would have to have a family member drive her more than 70 miles round trip to cast a ballot. Montooth says that’s

a common story in Native American families. “Part of the federal government’s plan when they created reservations was to put our ancestors in isolated areas,” she points out. “So our relatives, who are in Moapa, our relatives that are in Fort McDermitt, they really, really have a challenge to get to the polling place. “ A survey by the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Calif. showed that in the 2016 election, Native American communities in Nevada, which had polling places on tribal lands, saw voter turnout up to 24 percent higher than those that didn’t. The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony for the first time this year will offer multiple options for early voting and will have its own Election Day polling place in the Hungry Valley Gym.

Montooth calls this “history in the making.” “The time when we have true, true equality with all other citizens of this country

is when we get to go cast our ballot,” she states. Native Americans were not granted full citizenship in the United States until

1924. Nevada is home to more than 30,000 Native Americans and more than 20 federally recognized tribes.

By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The federal government is proceeding with plans for a December auction of oil and gas drilling leases on thousands of acres of land in the Greater Chaco region. A comment period on the proposal opened today and will continue through October 31, despite a pending Senate bill that would protect the area, and without a cultural review and consultation promised by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Miya King-Flaherty, organizer with the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter, said the government is

violating its own procedures by not having a resource management plan in place. “They’re not following their own rules,” KingFlaherty said; “they’re really just rubber-stamping these drilling permits while not giving the thorough analysis that they are mandated to do.” New Mexico Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich have introduced legislation to protect the greater Chaco region. The bill, called the Chaco Cultural Heritage Area Protection Act, is backed by the All Pueblo Council of Governors and the Navajo Nation, which said the

area has great significance to the state’s indigenous people and any disturbance would be “culturally and morally unacceptable.” Under the Trump administration, the oil and gas industry is once again booming in New Mexico. But King-Flaherty said it comes at a price - including diminished air quality, groundwater loss, a reduction in wildlife habitat and community health impacts. King-Flaherty added that any new drilling should take into account the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report that said without concerted

efforts to end reliance on fossil fuels, extreme climate disruption will increase significantly within 12 years. “I think more people are starting to be more aware of how oil and gas drilling is really exacerbating climate change and how this current administration is really rolling

back regulations that have been put in place,” she said. The BLM is not accepting online comments, but rather protests must be submitted by mail or hand-delivered to the BLM state office in Santa Fe, and will only be considered valid if each parcel being protested is specially listed.

A Native American group calls the introduction of a polling place to the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony “history in the making.” (Bill Beckham/Twenty20)

US Treasury Secretary meets with Saudi Crown Prince By Desert Star Staff As pressure mounts on US President Donald Trump to punish Riyadh over the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Turkey, his Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday. A photo of Mnuchin and bin Salman together was posted by the Saudi Foreign Ministry on Twitter. During their meeting in Riyadh, the Crown Prince stressed “the importance of Saudi-US strategic partnership, where it holds an important role in the future in line with the Kingdom’s #Vision2030,” the ministry stated. As pressure mounts on US President Donald Trump to punish Riyadh over the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Turkey, his Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday.

Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. The Turkish authorities, who promised to reveal “the naked truth” behind the slain columnist’s death on Tuesday, allege that the journalist was a victim of a “Saudi hit squad.” It is alleged that Khashoggi was tortured and dismembered inside the consulate in an apparent premeditated assassination. US’ European allies have urged a transparent investigation into the circumstances of the journalist’s death, with German

Chancellor Angela Merkel saying that as long as his death is shrouded in secrecy, Germany will not export any arms to Saudi Arabia. So far, Trump has been reluctant to follow her lead, arguing that halting Saudi arms exports will hurt the US economy. Mnuchin, who earlier confirmed his visit to Riyadh as part of the Middle East

tour, has neither issued any comment on his talks with bin Salman, nor released a photo of the meeting. The Washington Post’s correspondent Damian Paletta reported, citing Mnuchin’s spokesman, that the two also touched upon the Khashoggi murder, of which there is no mention in the Saudi statement.

The news of Mnuchin meeting the Crown Prince in Riyadh has sparked a fresh wave of outrage among lawmakers and observers. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) called the meeting “a sad day for America” and a “seeming sell out.” “Are we now a pawn of Saudi propaganda?” he tweeted.

Khashoggi murder a ‘monstrosity’, no arms exports to Riyadh

By Desert Star Staff The killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate is a “monstrosity,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stated, adding that Berlin will not sell arms to Riyadh while the issue remains unclear. “It must be cleared up. As long as it’s not cleared up, there will be no arms exports to Saudi Arabia. I assure you of that very decidedly,” Merkel said during a campaign rally in Ortenberg on Monday. Her comment reiterates a statement made on Sunday, in which she said there is an “urgent need for clarification of exacty what happened”to Khashoggi and condemned his killing “in the strongest terms.” Her comment about Germany refusing to sell arms to Riyadh while the issue remains unclear is significant, as the country approved

www.desertstarweekly.com

weapons exports to Saudi Arabia worth €416.4 million this year, reportedly making Riyadh Germany’s second-best arms customer after Algeria. Earlier on Monday, Germany urged other EU states to follow its example of ending arms exports to Saudi Arabia so long as uncertainty remains over what exactly happened to Khashoggi. On Saturday, Germany - along with France and the European Union - demanded an in-depth investigation into what happened to the journalist.”The information available about events in the Istanbul consulate is inadequate,” Merkel said in a joint statement with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas. That remark came after Riyadh finally admitted on Saturday, after weeks of denials, that Khashoggi died during a “fistfight”inside the

Saudi consulate in Istanbul. However, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Fox News on Sunday that Riyadh doesn’t know how the journalist was killed or where his body is. As Merkel halts arms exports to Riyadh amid the uncertainty, the US seems unlikely to do the same. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he hopes Washington can keep its $450 billion arms deal with Riyadh, citing the money and jobs it is bringing into the country and stating that there are other ways to “punish” the kingdom if it is guilty of the journalist’s death.

October 24, 2018

Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi royal family, was last seen when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain documents for his forthcoming marriage. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Ankara would reveal the full truth surrounding his death on Tuesday, after his country previously stated that the journalist was killed by a Saudi assassination squad. Riyadh’s initial claim of Khashoggi dying in a fistfight has been met with criticism, including from US senators who believe Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad

bin Salman ordered the journalist to be killed. Meanwhile, an unnamed Turkish official backed up the assassination squad claim earlier on Monday, telling CNN that one of the members of the 15-man squad was a man who looked like Khashoggi and left the consulate wearing his clothes moments after the killing. Although the journalist’s death has prompted a wave of global backlash against Riyadh, the Gulf kingdom has said that its relationship with the US can weather the incident, and insists the killing won’t trigger a repeat of the 1973 oil embargo.

What to know about a cancer you may not have heard of

A

FAMILY FEATURES

woman celebrating her 40th birthday, a young boy starting second grade or a college grad about to begin his career. All three could develop a rare form of cancer known as epithelioid sarcoma (ES), a form of soft-tissue sarcoma. There is little information available about ES. Patients, advocates, doctors and researchers across the United States are aiming to educate people about this ultra-rare cancer and the unmet need for an effective, tumor-specific treatment. Consider these facts about ES:

What are Soft-Tissue Sarcomas and What is Epithelioid Sarcoma?

Soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) are a type of cancer that occur in tissue like muscle, fat, skin, nerves and blood vessels. There are more than 50 types of STS, including ES, which is a rare form that can occur under the skin in the limbs (such as the arms, hands, legs or feet) or soft tissue in other places like the abdomen. Adults in their 20s and 30s and men, in particular, are more likely to get ES, although it can affect people of all ages and genders, according to research published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.

How Rare is Rare?

According to the American Cancer Society, a rare cancer is defined as fewer than six new diagnoses per 100,000 people per year. ES is an ultra-rare cancer. According to available epidemiology and case reports, it is estimated about 600 people are properly diagnosed in the U.S. and Europe each year.

What are the Most Common Types of ES and How Do They Impact Diagnosis?

ES can take two forms: Distal-type: Classic form, typically affects teenagers and young adults. n Typically forms under the skin in areas like hands, legs and feet. n Can be mistaken for another skin condition like an infected wart or a wound that won’t heal, which may delay diagnosis. Proximal-type: Rarer form, mainly affects adults and is more aggressive. n Typically forms in central areas of the body like the abdomen.

n

Can be mistaken for menstrual cramps or an upset stomach, making identification and diagnosis more difficult.

Dealing with a Diagnosis?

Due to its rarity, harmless appearance in its initial stages and occurrence in young people, ES is often misdiagnosed, according to the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative. For this reason, the Sarcoma Foundation of America recommends checking often for lumps and bumps in places they shouldn’t be. For people faced with a sarcoma diagnosis, it’s important to get a second opinion from a sarcoma specialist. These specialists have extensive knowledge of STS and can determine what form of sarcoma one may have, what stage it is and the best course of treatment. The specialist may confirm the diagnosis with a physical examination, a scan or a tissue sample (biopsy) of the area. It’s common to feel a range of emotions after a diagnosis of ES, according to Clear View Health Partners, including: n Fear n Denial n Frustration n Anxiety n Hope that treatment will be successful n Determination to beat ES

What Treatment Options are Available?

Treatment options depend on a variety of factors, including the location of the tumor, tumor staging and whether the disease has metastasized or spread to other parts of the body. For patients with early stage ES, many elect to have surgery to remove the tumor, which may precede or be followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy treatment, according to the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. If the cancer returns or spreads, a patient may undergo radiation therapy and chemotherapy. New treatment options are being studied through clinical research, which is why seeking a specialist in the field is important if one is faced with a diagnosis. As with many cancers, early detection is important and can increase survival or successful treatment. Typically, the distal form of ES is associated with more favorable survival rates than the proximal form.

AN ES DIAGNOSIS JOURNEY In the spring of 2008, Maria Voermans’ 4-yearold daughter requested an “airplane ride,” and as Voermans lifted the young girl up with her legs, she had to make an “emergency landing” because of some sudden and significant pain in her upper right thigh. After a few months, the pain persisted. Voermans continued to jog and play sand volleyball, thinking nothing of it. At the recommendation of her primary care physician, she took some antiinflammatories and tried to rest, which wasn’t easy to do as a single mother of two young children. Two more months went by and her leg caused increasing problems. She could feel something in her leg, but never considered it a “lump” because it was not visible on the outside. Voermans took matters into her own hands and visited a sports medicine orthopedic specialist for further testing. An MRI found a mass in her right leg and she was referred to one of the few musculoskeletal oncologists in Wisconsin, her home state. He ordered a biopsy, which on Voermans’ youngest daughter’s third birthday confirmed her worst fear: it was a rare form of cancer called proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma, and it was stage three. There is a wide range of entertainment available if you just look around you. For example, the third annual Joshua Tree International Improv-Comedy Festival, returns to the HiDesert Cultural Center (HDCC) in Joshua Tree.CA. According to festival executive director, Jeanette Knight, the festival which runs from November 9 through November 11, 2018, will feature entertainment and education panels with celebrity guests as well as performance competitions by Inprov groups and stand-up comics. All events are open to the public, with audience votes determining the winners. This year’s festival is a comedy feast not only for the eyes and the ears of the audience but also includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and a full cash bar. The doors open at 7:30 PM. The entertainment portion begins with popular co-hosts Nick Luciano and Zach Fairless who will present a thirty minute, sketch comedy routine that gets

‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Shines at Ahmanson

L-R: Ben Levi Ross as Evan Hansen, Aaron Lazar as Larry Murphy, Christiane Noll as Cynthia Murphy, and Maggie McKenna as their daughter Zoe. Photo by: Matthew Murphy. The Broadway smash hit “Dear Evan Hansen” received six Tony Awards. Now it has traveled to Los Angeles where it shines at the Ahmanson Theatre. On opening night the outstanding touring production, skillfully directed by Michael Greif, received a rousing standing ovation. On Broadway, Ben Platt won a Tony for his performance as Evan. Now Ben Levi Ross

takes over the title role and does an excellent job As the musical begins, we meet Evan (Ben Levi Ross), a troubled teen who lives with his single mother Heidi (Jessica Phillips). HIs father walked away long ago when Evan was a child. As a result of this abandonment, Evan suffers from severe self-esteem problems that require therapy. Part of his

treatment involves writing letters of praise to himself that begin “Dear Evan Hansen.” Another even more lost loner is Evan’s next door neighbor, Connor Murphy (Marrick Smith). One day at school Connor takes a black magic marker from Evan and signs the cast on his broken arm in large letters-CONNOR. As he walks away, Connor inadvertently takes

the letter Evan has written for his therapist. Later that day Connor commits suicide and in his possession is a letter written to “Dear Evan Hansen.” The complimentary missive, filled with praise for Evan, leads Connor’s bereft parents (Aaon Lazar and Christian Noll) to believe that Evan was their late son’s best and only friend. As a result, they invite him over to talk about his relationship with Connor. Zoe Murphy (Maggie McKenna) finds it hard to believe that there was a tender side to her brother since he always treated her with hostility. But as Evan describes his personal feelings for Zoe, attributing them to Connor, she reluctantly starts to care more for her late brother. She also begins to care for Evan as well. Evan has had a crush on Zoe for a long time but was always hesitant to even speak to her in his selfconscious, stammering way. Now he seems to find his voice as he tries to ease the pain of Connor’s family. To create a friendship that never existed, Evan

writes letters to himself on his computer, allegedly from Connor. In the process, he elicits help from his snarky next door neighbor, Jared (Jared Goldsmith). As the duo describe Connor’s alienation from classmates in fake emails, Evan reveals his pain as a fellow outsider. “Dear Evan Hansen,” written by Steven Levinson with a musical score by Benj Pasek, is an emotional exploration of teenage life, warts and all. It is bittersweet and thoroughly engrossing and is a show worth seeing more than once. “Dear Evan Hansen” at the Ahmanson Theatre, 135 N. Grand Ave. L.A. ends Nov. 25. Running time: 2 hours, 40 minutes (including intermission.) Tickets range from $99-$285 (subject to change.) For information call (213) 972-4400 or www. centertheatregroup.org. Other shows on the Ahmanson agenda include “Come From Away” Nov. 28 - Jan. 6, 2019, followed by “Cinderella” Feb. 5- March 10, 2019, and “Falsettos” April 16 to May 19.

Make Power Tool Safety Part of Your Remodeling Plan

By Desert Star Staff When it’s time to take on a new project, both DIY-inclined homeowners and contractors alike must consider many components to successfully complete the task, from design plans and materials to the proper tools needed. For simple projects like installing new light fixtures as well as more complicated projects such as refurbishing an outdated bathroom, power tools can be helpful throughout the process. Once all the items on the checklist are accounted for and there’s a plan in place, the next step to consider is an important one: safety. While obvious concepts like electrical safety are typically followed without hesitation, some crucial details don’t receive the same caution, such as safe handling of batteries. Many cordless power tools use lithium-ion batteries for improved efficiency, energy storage capacity, durability, versatility and portability, but they need to be handled properly. Prior to operating a battery-powered tool, consider these tips from the experts at the Power Tool Institute, a leading voice on power tool safety issues and standards for the industry. Selection and Use: • Lithium-ion batteries www.desertstarweekly.com

pack more energy than prior technologies, which means they can do more work, but there’s also greater potential for damage when misused. • Batteries are not interchangeable, so it’s important to only use batteries and chargers from the original power tool manufacturer. • Original manufacturer batteries are engineered to communicate and work with specific tools and chargers. These components, as a system, also go through a rigorous certification and testing process – a requirement that doesn’t typically apply to third-party batteries. • Substandard aftermarket and counterfeit batteries may come with additional hazards that result in fire, property damage or personal injury. • If a battery is damaged, do not use it. • Never immerse your tool, battery pack or charger in fluid or allow a fluid to enter it, including corrosive or conductive fluids, such as seawater, certain industrial chemicals and bleach or products containing bleach. Fluid entry can increase the chances of short-circuiting, which comes with risks of overheating, fire or explosion that can lead to personal

injury and property damage. Transportation and Disposal: • Always transport and store lithium-ion batteries as instructed in the owner’s manual. • Avoid contact with metal objects, such as keys, coins, screws, nails and liquids. • When disposing a lithium-ion battery, take it to a local recycling center or place it in a receptacle designed for batteries. Throwing it away in the trash or municipal recycling can cause a fire hazard. For more safe battery

Dog owners dish on how food factors into pet bonding

A

FAMILY FEATURES

sk most dog owners and they’ll tell you that they count the bonds they share with their pets among their most treasured relationships. However, that boundless affection and loyalty isn’t a one-sided effort; dog owners are demonstrating their puppy love in numerous ways, especially when it comes to chow time. There’s much to be said for the unique relationship people share with their dogs, according to the 2018 Pets and People Survey by Just Right by Purina. Nearly unanimously (95 percent), respondents said they view their dogs as part of their families, and more than half reported that their pet pals help them de-stress after a long workday and have comforted them after receiving bad news. Just like any relationship, the bond with a dog requires nurturing. As it turns out, most dog owners are working to keep the love alive with a familiar approach: the notion that the fastest path to the heart is through the stomach. After all, when you view pets as family, you may as well feed them like it.

Encouraging dinner dialogue

A helpful aspect of pet bonding is developing communication patterns that your dog can recognize and understand. In part, this involves commands to help manage behavior, but it often includes other forms of engagement, as well. Mealtime is an ideal opportunity to enjoy some extra interaction, from asking if your dog is hungry to talking your way through filling his or her bowl with a personalized dog food blend. In fact, 64 percent of dog owners surveyed reported asking their dog if it likes its food after serving it. There may not be a verbal response, but dogs give off plenty of signals to let you know whether or not they’re enjoying the meal.

Personalizing the experience

Humans agree that eating or drinking out of a favorite vessel just makes mealtime more special. That may be the motivation for the 65 percent of dog owners who reported taking time to personalize their dogs’ bowls.

Making dog nutrition matter

The majority of dog owners surveyed agreed the type of food their dog eats has an impact on its health and mood. For 43 percent of Millennial dog owners surveyed, they reported spending more money on their dog’s food than their own groceries. Fortunately, not all nutritionally sound options will break the bank, but it is a good idea to do some research to understand the nutritional value and quality of the food you provide.

Serving up security

Dogs thrive on rituals and dinnertime is an opportunity to create some consistent patterns that help your pup feel safe and secure. A routine with meals in the same place at approximately the same time every day helps strengthen the pet bond because your dog knows he can rely on you to satisfy one of his most basic needs. If you extend some human courtesies as part of your feeding ritual, you certainly aren’t alone. For example, 73 percent of dog owners in the Just Right by Purina survey feed their dogs before they serve themselves. Not only is it a smart strategy

to prevent begging at the table, it keeps your pooch from wondering when his own hunger cravings will be sated.

Celebrating special occasions

If your dog is part of the family, it only makes sense to celebrate special events like birthdays. It’s a good excuse for a little extra attention and maybe a new toy or two. Forty percent of dog owners, including 56 percent of Millennials, have upped their pet parenting game by buying their dog its own birthday cake. Make your own using a pet-friendly recipe or visit a pet bakery for a special birthday treat. Learn more about feeding the bond with your pet at justrightpetfood.com. All statistics and findings included in this release were pulled from a survey conducted online by Research Now SSI on behalf of Just Right by Purina among adults ages 18+ who are dog owners and have some responsibility over the well-being of their pet. A total of 1,010 responses were collected between March 26 and March 29, 2018. These online surveys are not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

DOG FOOD INGREDIENTS FOR UNIQUE NUTRITIONAL NEEDS

Your dog is unique, not only in his relationship with you, but his preferences, tastes, quirks and habits. It’s no wonder that his nutritional needs are unique to match. When you’re evaluating food options, give careful attention to the ingredients to find the right blend of nutrients for your dog:

nutrient metabolism, cell function and more.

Vitamins are responsible for a vast range of functions, including aiding in DNA synthesis, energy release from nutrients, bone development, eye function, maintenance of cell structure, blood clotting, nerve signal transmission and everything in-between.

Protein is essential for building organs and tissues like tendons, muscles, skin, hair and blood; it also functions as enzymes, hormones and antibodies.

Photos courtesy of Fotolia By Desert Star Staff When winter approaches, it brings a number of distractions and factors that tend to keep people from getting outside and staying active. From holiday parties and vacations to bad weather, it’s important to keep health and exercise top of mind throughout the busy season. This is especially important for your furry friends since they depend on their owners to keep them healthy and active Help keep your dog happy www.desertstarweekly.com

and healthy throughout the holiday season with these tips, and for more information on healthy habits for your dog, visit IAMS.com. 1. Keep Table Food on the Table – With colder weather comes heavier, heartier food. While you may be tempted to share some of your delicious dinner or toss your pup some party snacks, these rich foods can lead to digestive issues for your dog. If you want to treat your dog, try mixing a bit of wet food into his dry

kibble for a savory surprise. 2. Feed the Right Food – An important step in keeping a pet healthy is to establish and maintain proper nutrition habits, starting with selecting the right type of food. You’ll want to look for a pet food that includes high-quality ingredients, such as IAMS™ dog food, which also offers quality protein and essential vitamins and minerals to help dogs stay healthy and active during the colder months. The brand also offers breed specific dry dog food October 24, 2018

recipes, customized to meet the unique needs of six of the most popular dog breeds. 3. Bundle Up – It may be too cold to enjoy an entire afternoon outside, but don’t forget, your dog has a fur coat and needs to stay active and expel energy all year round. Make sure you have the proper winter gear for you and your pup. Depending on your dog’s needs, consider protective gear for winter, such as a coat to keep him warm or booties for his feet to prevent salt on the

ground from irritating his paws. 4. Stock Up on Toys – Some days, heading outside into winter weather just doesn’t happen. Whether it’s snowing, sleeting or just too cold, safety should come first. However, your dog will still have energy to release, so keep a variety of toys on-hand to keep him busy and active. Toss around a ball for a short-range game of fetch or play some tug-ofwar with one of his favorite toys. Family Features

Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association The beauty of theatre, as opposed to film, lies in its ability to present to its audiences a fresh approach to each and every performance night and after night. No two performances are ever the same. As the enjoyment of the stage genre grows and matures the more the actors and artists ramp up their performance magic. Film is a different medium. It’s a cousin of the theatre in that it’s also a creative, artistic, and a powerful art form. But it doesn’t have the ability to ‘breathe’, or to be continually in the moment. Unlike the stage, film is frozen warts and all, in a celluloid time capsule. If the movie misses the mark for its audiences there is no changing a flaw or incorporating the director’s new input for tomorrow screenings. The Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) is presenting a four performance only production of Edward Albee’s iconic, Tony Award-winning play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”, directed by Michael Pacas, that stars Yo Younger as Martha, Richard Marlow as George, Phylicia Mason as Honey and Sean Timothy Brown as Nick. Albee is a three time Pulitzer winning playwright, considered to be one of the five most influential American playwrights of the twentieth century along with Eugene O’Neill, Arthur Miller, August Wilson, and Tennessee Williams. Pretty heady company. All of whom are installed the Pantheon of American literature.

Of the five playwrights Albee is the most controversial and the most theatrically provocative. His stories are designed to force the audience to reexamine their previously held tenets. “All my plays are about people missing the boat, closing down too young, coming to the end of their lives with regret at things not done, as opposed to things done” adding, “I find most people spend too much time living as if they’re never going to die.” he opined in a 1991 New York Times interview. In another interview with “The Guardian” newspaper in 2004 Albee stated “the job of the writer is to hold up a mirror to people” echoing with a twist, the philosophy of fellow playwright and author Bertolt Brecht, who forcefully penned the quote, “Art is not just a mirror to hold up to society, but a hammer with which to shape it.” Albee has certainly hammered his offbeat subject matter material over the years, with such plays as: “Zoo Story”, the enigmatic “Tiny Alice, whom many said was too confusing to understand, and “The Goat, or who is Sylvia?” his most provocative and controversial play about love, marriage and sexual mores. And of course, his masterpiece and crown jewel in his canon “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”, which I saw last week at The Palm Canyon Theatre; who are best known for their highly successful musical theatre productions. Albee’s scabrous play centers around a middle aged married couple, George and Martha whose vitriolic verbal battles are defined by hyperbolic bitter exchanges, which underlies what seems like an emotional dependence upon each other. Their verbal

Photo by Paul Hayashi abuse toward one another is fueled by an excessive consumption of nature’s truth serum – alcohol. The story in short, revolves around George (Richard Marlow in a finely judged nuanced star turn) and Martha (played by Yo Younger in a tour de force performance, who recently nabbed two acting trophies at the Desert Theatre League Desert Stars Awards) both of whom should be in therapy but aren’t. George an associate History professor in New Carthage University where Martha’s father is the President adds spice and irony, and an extra dimension to their “no holds barred” vituperative relationship, where in truth, each needs the other. Late one Saturday evening after a faculty mixer Martha invites Nick an ambitious young Biology professor and hunk (played by Sean Timothy Brown) who is new to the university and his timid wife Honey (Phylicia Mason) over for a nightcap. As the evening

progresses, Nick and Honey, George and Martha all of whom have consumed more alcohol than the law legally allows to drive a car, get caught up in George and Martha’s ‘games’ of needing to hurt each other and everyone around them. The ultimate abuse comes in the form of dialogue regarding George and Martha’s unseen sixteen year-old son, whose birthday is the following day. The story and plot is well known to the world, thanks to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s tempestuous “private lifestyle” that went public; mimicking the play’s characters in the eponymous movie of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”, starring Burton and Taylor. But no additional spoiler alerts here. Besides, the audience is seeing the play through the staging lenses of director Michael Pacas, who pretty much hews to Albee’s original dialogue along with some twists of his own. For example, Pacas has divided Albee’s original three act play

into two acts without altering Albee’s dramatic intention. The PCT production is a visceral snapshot of one couples’ version of domesticity. In the technical department PCT’s solid creative team led by director Pacas includes: Scenic Designer Kirsten Cunningham, Lighting Designer J.W. Layne, and Costume Designer Derik Shopinski. The best way to sum up this high energy play of American domesticity is to borrow a line from the 1950 Academy Award winning 20th Century Fox movie “All About Eve”, where Bette Davis utters the now classic line to her party guests, “Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.” What a delicious understatement! “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”, is an impressive production that performs at the Palm Canyon Theatre in Palms Springs, and runs through October 21st. Switch Up Your Game Day Menu

By Desert Star Staff Burgers and dogs may be typical game day grub, but a lineup that never changes can get tiresome a few weeks into the season. Infuse new energy and homemade favorites into your game

day menu so you can enjoy great games and good eats for a winning combination. Explore new flavors. Add variety by building your meal around a different main dish, like ribs or pulled pork instead of burgers. Or invite guests to

get in on the action and offer a DIY pizza or taco bar with a wide range of toppings for the ultimate custom plate. Then adapt your side dishes to fit the theme, like adding a barbecue spice seasoning to your party mix, for example, or offering a chipotle-style dip for veggies and chips. Add an unexpected twist. If you prefer a more traditional menu, there’s no reason to abandon all your favorite game day fare. Instead, reimagine a popular dish with a special or unexpected ingredient. For example, this recipe features a homemade pizza topped with creamy ranch dressing. An option like Litehouse Homestyle Ranch has no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, no high fructose corn syrup and is gluten free. The dressing is a versatile addition to your game day spread since you can use it to top off everything from pizza and fries to tacos, burgers and more. For easy serving, look for the 20-ounce squeeze bottle, or opt for a glass jar or dip tub, whichever your recipe requires. Don’t forget dessert. A good game requires lots of savory, hearty foods, but by

By Desert Star Staff Thoughts of hosting and entertaining during one of the busiest seasons of the year can be stressful. With so much party preparation for the holidays, from decor to drinks and appetizers to activities, it’s easy to see how even the most experienced hosts can get a little flustered. One way to make sure you get to enjoy this year’s festivities is to streamline preparation without sacrificing flavor, quality or appearance. By limiting the number of drinks and dishes you serve, you can wow your guests with both your culinary expertise and your smile. • Stick to one or two signature cocktails so you www.desertstarweekly.com

won’t have to stock the bar (which can be expensive) or take drink orders and play bartender all night. Save even more time by serving make-ahead cocktails that simply require adding soda when ready to drink. Add white and red wine options, and offer seltzer and cranberry or pomegranate juice for mocktails. • Make a festive centerpiece that’s also edible, such as this Wreath Centerpiece from Kaukauna Cheese. Assemble it the day before or the morning of the party, eliminating last-minute stress. It’s simple to make and appropriate for nearly any holiday gathering. Plus, the “No-Artificial-Anything”

Cheese Ball, with no additives or artificial ingredients, can appeal to the taste buds of hungry guests. • Let your hors d’oeuvres serve double duty as both appetizer and party decor. To make it nearly effortless, head to your local grocery store’s deli section. Pick up cured meats, cheeses, pickled vegetables, assorted olives, breads, crackers, nuts and fruits. Arrange on a large platter, board or tray then garnish with rosemary sprigs and scatter with pomegranate seeds for a festive finish in a flash. Waking up to go to the bathroom multiple times per night?

It’s not because you’re ‘getting old’ It’s a common misconception: the older you get, the more frequently you need to use the bathroom at night. Did you know waking up more than once per night to urinate is a medical condition known as nocturia? Shockingly, 64 percent of American adults do not know. A recent Harris Poll of more than 2,000 U.S. adults, endorsed by The Simon Foundation for Continence, National Association for Continence (NAFC) and the Prostate Conditions Education Council (PCEC), found that approximately one-third of them suffer from nocturia. Nocturia, which forces individuals to get up more than once per night to urinate, is a leading cause of sleep loss and can put one’s health at risk. “Before receiving treatment for nocturia, I typically wound up making five trips to the bathroom each night, which I knew wasn’t normal,” said Jack

Fagan, a 67-year-old resident of Sewell, NJ. “Treatment has made a noticeable impact on my quality of sleep. I find myself more refreshed and have the energy to enjoy time with family and friends.” Most people living with nocturia (72 percent) reported they are negatively impacted by the condition at night; 43 percent of whom have trouble falling back to sleep, 12 percent indicated they wake up their partners and 10 percent expressed nervousness about tripping or falling while walking to the bathroom. The impact of nocturia-induced sleep loss can be wide-ranging, affecting physical and mental health. Sixty-one percent of nocturia sufferers experience daytime issues as a result of nighttime urination, including: drowsiness, irritability and reduced productivity and concentration. Sixty-six percent of nocturia sufferers surveyed have never discussed their symptoms

Photo courtesy of Getty Images with a healthcare professional; half of respondents reported they thought it was a normal part of aging, and 27 percent believed nothing could be done to remedy the problem. “We see patients who have suffered with nocturia for many years, as it slowly progresses from getting up twice to over four times per night to urinate,” said Roger

Dmochowski, M.D., a nocturia sufferer and professor within the department of urologic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. “In my personal and professional experience, nocturia can have serious implications for an individual’s emotional state and daily life, due to sleep disruption, if not diagnosed and treated. Up until recently, we didn’t

have effective treatments.” For more information on nocturia, visit www. whatisnocturia.com, or www. simonfoundation.org/nocturia. The Harris Poll survey was funded by Avadel Pharmaceuticals and Serenity Pharmaceuticals. Family Featues

5 Things to Consider on Your Next Road Trip

By Desert Star Staff If you’re looking for a memorable vacation experience, getting behind the wheel and taking to the open road can provide the perfect opportunity to create your own journey and explore at your own pace. When planning a road trip, the first step is choosing where your travels will take you. A destination like New Mexico, known as the Land of Enchantment, is a haven for the unexpected and offers a variety of budget-friendly activities that can inspire creativity and rejuvenate your body and mind. Before you jump in the car and set off to make memories, there are a few things to consider when building your trip’s itinerary, such as climate, lodging, restaurants, activities and your budget.

Relaxation Road trips are all about hitting the reset button and finding a happy place. Take a step back and soothe

healing powers of these hot springs, the only location in the world with four different types of sulfur-free pools. The full-service spa also offers soothing and restorative treatments including massages, reflexology and hydrating skin and body treatments. Shopping No trip is complete without souvenirs to remember the adventure and gifts for loved ones back home. Consider stopping at the historic Santa Fe Plaza, where you can find a wide array of boutique shops and the Palace of the Governors market, where top artisans from local tribes offer one-of-a-kind handcrafted treasures such as art, furniture, Native American pottery, clothing and collectibles.

Weather Due to its mild climate and abundant sunshine, New Mexico beckons travelers year-round. With low humidity, minimal rainfall and temperatures ranging from the high 50s to low 80s during the fall months plus highs in the 50s during winter, visitors are almost always able to enjoy outdoor events and activities during their trips. Lodging When looking for a place to stay, New Mexico is home to many one-of-a-kind inns and hotels. For example, Hotel Santa Fe is wholly nativeowned by the Picuris Pueblo Indian tribe and features private butlers along with amenities and furnishings with the authentic flavor of the region. Other unique lodging options include Hotel Luna Mystica in Taos, a chic vintage inn made up of trailers from the ’50s and ’60s with dramatic views of the Rocky Mountains. Food and Drinks Exploring new places can be a perfect opportunity (or excuse) to indulge in exquisite foods you may not be able to find anywhere else. For example, Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm is set among 25 acres

“Holmes & Watson”

L-R Richard Baird, Alice Sherman, Si Osborne. Photo by Aaron Rumley Continued from Page 1 character brings up the question of Did Holmes actually die at the hands of his arch enemy Professor Moriarty or is he still alive? What happened to Moriarty? Did he die with Holmes, as both men appeared to have tumbled while struggling at edge of a mountain waterfall, finally meeting their fates. This is what the audience has to wrestle with and resolve. Everyone likes to play detective and Hatcher’s play and director Ellenstein’s deft staging supply them with plenty of ammunition. What is all the more fantastic about Hatcher’s play is that some readers and audiences to this day, believe that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were real life people who lived at 221B Baker Street in London. Visiting tourists from around the world for years wanted to visit Holmes and Watson’s digs. Ultimately, the London County Counsel turned a building located at 221-B Baker Street into the fictional

address and apartment, which looks today as if Holmes and Watson have just left to solve a case; into a money-making goldmine. Such is the power of the pen. But I digress. The play is more of an investigation in its presentation in search of the truth as seen from the viewpoint of Dr. Watson (wonderfully played in a finely nuanced performance by Richard Barid), As the play begins Dr. Watson is talking with Dr. Evans ( played by Si Osborne) about three men who are his patients in the Scottish asylum. Dr. Watson has been called upon to identify which of the three men is the real Sherlock Holmes. Through a series of interviews with Holmes Number 1, played by Jacob Sidney, Holmes number 2, played by Drew Parker, and Holmes number 3 played by Christopher M. Wiiliams along with Dr. Evans’ orderly played by J. Todd Adams, and The Woman portrayed by Alice Sherman, respectively round out the cast. The beauty of this production lies in the performances of this ‘All Equity

L-R J. Todd Adams, Jacob Sidney, Richard Baird, Si Osborne. Photo by Aaron Rumley actor” cast. The technical components of creative team led by director Ellenstein are first rate. The set designs by Marty Burnett,, never fail to disappoint, .and Lights designed by Matt Novotny make these two creative artists a formidable pair. The costume designs of Kim Deshazo are spot-on for the period, along with a sound design by Chad

Lee Thymes, and hair and wig designs by Peter Herman, complete the creative team. I’m not sure who designed the projections/special effects but they stand out and are an important element in the overall enjoyment and better understanding of Mr. Hatcher’s play, along with the creative and inventive fingerprints of director Ellenstein, who

once again has a winning production on his hands. “Holmes & Watson” is an impressive production that is performed without an intermission (approximately 90 minutes) that performs at the North Coast Repertory Theatre, Solana Beach, CA. The mystery/drama runs through November 18, 2018. Don’t Miss It.
