Aerial Tramway To Reopen NBC PS News Staff Following a nearly twomonth closure and almost $4 million in repair costs and lost revenue, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is poised to reopen Monday. The tramway has been closed since a Feb. 14 storm saturated the area and washed out some streets, including

Tramway Road, the main route to the aerial attraction. The first car is scheduled to leave at 10 a.m., with the box office opening at 9:30 a.m. Online ticket sales will resume April 8, tramway officials said. “While the tramway was on track for record attendance in the fiscal year 2018-19, it is estimated that nearly

100,000 visitors were displaced due to the 46-day closure,” spokeswoman Cara Youngman said. “The tram also estimates that the incident resulted in almost $4 million in repair costs and lost ticket revenues.” In addition to the washedout roadway, the rain caused damage to the attraction’s main power line, along with

the Valley Station water tank and Mountain Station roof, Youngman said. Last month, the Mount San Jacinto Winter Park Authority approved $351,071 to fund identified repairs, while also setting aside up to $500,000 for other potential repairs, engineering, and inspections, at the discretion of the general

manager. The authority also approved $300,000 to continue paying the tramway’s roughly 70 employees through April 1. “We truly look forward to welcoming back tram visitors beginning April 1st,” Tramway General Manager Nancy Nichols said. “Also, I wish to Continues on Page 3

A brand new, modern painted mural by artist and actor, Joe Dietl By Desert Star Staff Artist Joe Dietl recently moved to Palm Springs from Los Angeles where he was a successful working actor for decades in Hollywood, having done almost 100 commercials, television guest roles and indie features with top stars like Mike Myers, Jennifer Aniston, Will Ferrell and more. But his move to the desert has allowed him to focus on his painting full time and his gift to the city of Palm Springs is a brand new 8 foot by 16-foot desert landscape mural on the patio of the iconic “Bit of Country” cafe in Palm Springs. Dietl’s

mural will be a unique addition to the main street’s charm due to his use of saturated and hyper-real colors not typically seen in landscape paintings. The mural came about when Dietl and his husband had lunch one day at the cafe where he noticed the large wall on the patio, which used to have a mural, was now painted over in white. He was told that the cafe was under new ownership (which is an incredible story on its own) and they wanted a “new look.” Dietl, having just had a successful show at the Continues on Page 3

Move More Month: “Dying is Easy; Living Takes Hard Work”

The American Heart Association recommends 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity, per week. (Mabel Amber/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff April is “Move More Month,” challenging folks to make the kinds of small lifestyle changes that can have a big impact on their health.

The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous physical activity, but also reports that nearly half of adults aren’t active

enough to stay healthy. Cardiologist Dr. Simone Fearon, medical director and physician leader, ThedaCare Cardiovascular Care, said working small changes

By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – A new report shows that a record increase in referrals for child abuse and neglect has led to more foster-care placements in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children’s 10th Annual State of Child Welfare report says between 2015 and 2017, referrals to general protective services increased 24% – the highest ever recorded – placing a strain on the state’s foster-care system. Kari King, president and CEO of the organization, said despite increased efforts to place children in the family-based settings most

beneficial to them, almost half of placements still are in non-relative foster homes. “We really need to be hyper-aware of the supports that we can provide to the child-welfare system to make sure they’re capable of handling this increased caseload,” said King. She stressed that children thrive best when they’re placed with people they know and trust, and with whom they have an established relationship. Last year, Pennsylvania created a Kinship Navigator Program to assist relatives in safely and competently caring for children without the need for intervention by

the child-welfare system. King called it an important step in the right direction. “Research shows that outcomes are better for children who are placed in family-like settings and with a relative, as opposed to going into the formal foster-care system where, for example, they could be placed in a group home,” she said. The Kinship Navigator Program can help grandparents or other relatives with questions about school registration, health insurance or other issues important to children in their care. Transition-age youth, those older than 13, make up one-third of children entering

into your daily routine can bring long-term benefits. “Incorporate exercise into the day,” she said. “Maybe park a little bit farther when you’re shopping, so you’re walking a little bit more there. Things like taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator.” On the upside, the American Heart Association said moving more can make anyone feel better - physically and emotionally. It has dubbed today “Move More Day,” as the official kickoff for Move More Month. Fearon said cardiovascular disease is behind one-third of all deaths in the United States, more than any other cause and more than all types of cancer combined. However, she said, it often can be avoided, with effort - and one eye on the future. “Look at your lifestyle,” she said. “Where you are right

now is going to produce where you are in 10 years. Dying is easy. Living takes hard work.” She cautioned not to aim too high right away, because you could set yourself up for failure. Fearon said the trick is to build the changes gradually into your lifestyle; otherwise, you could be like a plane temporarily taken off auto-pilot. “You say, ‘OK, you know what? I’m going to lose 10 pounds.’ And you clean out the refrigerator, you clean out the pantry,” she said. “If the mindset doesn’t change, what happens is that, once all that turbulence settles, then you go right back into that ‘auto-pilot’ mode.” More tips for making healthy changes are on the American Heart Association’s website, heart. org, and information on Move More Month is here.

the foster-care system, and are the most difficult to place in family settings. King pointed out that permanent placement helps older children get the support they need as they become adults. “Making sure they graduate from high school; what might be their postsecondary plans?” she explained. “Down to things like, do they need help

getting their driver’s license so they have that level of sufficiency, and they can become employed and make some money?” According to data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, in 2017, 84% of Pennsylvania foster children were placed in family settings, an 11-percentage-point improvement over ten years.

Report: More Work Needed to Ensure Kinship Care in PA

New research confirms that placing foster children with people they already know and trust improves outcomes. (WenPhotos/Pixabay)

5 Ways to Protect Jewelry and Valuables

By Desert Star Staff From engagement rings to family heirlooms, your jewelry and other valuables are timeless and important. Luckily, there are steps you can take to help keep these items safe. Insurance experts from Travelers have put together the following tips to help you protect your most treasured possessions: 1. Insure Your Engagement Ring Immediately: Engagement rings hold great sentimental and monetary value, but many individuals don’t think to cover them under an insurance policy. Valuable items policies, such as a personal articles floater (PAF), insure individual

pieces that have a value that may exceed the limits of your homeowners policy. Travelers also offers the option to insure the ring at the same time you insure your wedding. You can learn more by visiting protectmywedding.com. 2. Store Your Jewelry in Unlikely Places: Burglars often know exactly where to look for jewelry and other valuables. Storing your most prized pieces in uncommon spaces, such as a bookshelf or your bathroom, can add an extra layer of protection. 3. Use Safe Cleaning Methods: Many people are surprised to hear that warm water and dish soap are among the best methods for keeping jewelry clean. Harsher methods, such as ultrasonic cleaners, can damage certain stones. 4. Monitor Extreme Temperature and Light Exposure: Light and heat can affect the color of

gemstones and metals. Extreme temperatures can also damage clasps, making it easier for stones to fall out of beloved pieces. 5. Know Your Homeowners Insurance Policy: While homeowners insurance covers your home and its contents, typical policies only cover up to $1,500 of jewelry. If

your jewelry has a higher value than that, it’s worth considering an additional policy, such as a PAF or the Valuable Items Plus program from Travelers, both of which provide coverage for items of higher value. You can ask your insurance agent or carrier about other policy options, including what their limits are and how to add them to your

overall insurance program. It may be hard to imagine the theft or loss of your most valuable possessions, but these things happen, and that’s why it’s important to take steps to protect your jewelry. With customizable insurance options and care, you can help make sure your jewelry survives each day. StatePoint

This colorful and fun fashion show, benefitting Presenting Sponsor Animal Samaritans, saw beautifully paw-dicured pets walk the runway, side by side with couture-clad models, as well as local “superheroes,” from our Valley strutting their stuff with their pets. Canines of all shapes and sizes joined their elegantlyattired owners and friends for a pre-show cocktail party and silent auction, before making their way into the big tent to enjoy custom wearable art from San Franciscobased fashion designer and animal lover Victor Tung. Tom Snyder, CEO of Animal Samaritans, welcomed

the overflow crowd and asked how many of the 800 plus guests were pet owners. Almost every hand quickly shot up in response! Snyder then went on to talk about his organization’s impeccable 40-year history within the Coachella Valley and showed a short video of Cleo, a tri-pawed dog that Animal Samaritans rescued from neglect and nursed back to health. The runway show got going when Snyder introduced the first set of “superhero supermodels.” These were local notables and veterans of the organization’s “Men of the Desert” Fall Fashion Show. ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” a Sweet Treat at The Pantages

Roald Dahl wrote 40 books that included “Matilda,” “James and the Giant Peach” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” first published in 1946. In 1971 Gene Wilder starred as Willy Wonka, the chocolate factory founder, in the first film version. Then in 2005, Johnny Depp took on the role. In 2013 this tasty little treat arrived on London’s West End, moving on to Broadway in 2017. Now Charlie, Willie Wonka, and the endearing Oompa Loompa factory workers are on a national tour, and they have arrived at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre for a threeweek run, ending April 14. On opening night the audience was sprinkled throughout with youngsters. For the little girl behind us, sitting on a booster cushion to enable her to see better, this was her first play in a big theatre like the Pantages. She was excited. And the lady sitting next to me was equally enthusiastic because she loved reading the book when she was a kid. The story centers on young Charlie Bucket who

comes from a poor, but very loving family. On opening night Charlie was performed by Rueby Wood. (Collin Jeffery and Henry Boshart alternate in the role). Charlie dreams of designing delicious chocolate concoctions someday. When he learns that five children throughout the world will get a chance to tour “The Wonka Chocolate Factory” if they find a golden ticket in a Wonka Chocolate Bar he is sure he will be one of the lucky ones. But his heart sinks when four winners are announced on TV. Time is running out, and he has to find the fifth golden ticket, but will he? Of course, he will--or there wouldn’t be a story. Noah Weisberg stars as Willy Wonka. In Act I he runs the local Willy Wonka chocolate store in London that Charlie visits often. In Act 2 he is transformed into Wonka who opens the doors of his magical factory to the five lucky winners. Charlie is accompanied by his grandpa Joe (James Young) who will be his guardian on this beautiful adventure. The other four winners come from America, Germany and Russia and

Noah Weisberg as Willy Wonka and company. Roald Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Photo by Joan Marcus. each one is a spoiled brat who doesn’t follow Wonka’s instructions. As a result, one falls into a vat of chocolate, and the others all come to an unpleasant but humorous end as well. That will teach youngsters to obey--or else. Adults play the four older winners. Charlie is the only winner played by a kid. The show has plenty of music throughout, but the most memorable songs, “The Candy Man” and “Pure Imagination,” were written by

Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1971 film. While each life-sized performer is excellent, it is the lovable little Oompa Loompas who steal the show. Black-clad puppeteers play them on their knees. So the Oompa Loompa heads are real, but their bodies, arms, and legs are little puppets. The effect is great. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” at the Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood

Blvd., Hollywood, ends April 14. Running time: 2 hours, 35 minutes. Tickets: $49-$175. For information call (800) 982-2787. Online HollywoodPantages.com.

North Carolina’s Red Wolf a Unique Species By Desert Star Staff ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Red wolves roam the Albemarle Peninsula of eastern North Carolina, and a new study confirms that the wild population is a unique, genetically distinct species. The findings could halt a years-long debate on whether these endangered wolves should be protected. Ben Prater is director of the southeast program at the conservation organization Defenders of Wildlife. “That question of whether or not red wolves were a true species and therefore should be protected under the Endangered Species Act has been a target, has been, again, something that has been used politically to motivate antipathy towards this animal and towards the program to recover it,” Prater said. As part of recent appropriations bills, Congress directed the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to investigate the animals’ genetic origins. The study, published by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, found evidence that the red wolf is a unique species genetically separate from gray wolves and coyotes. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently has taken

steps to strip protections for red wolves in the wild. Prater said the new study cements the red wolf’s status as a species worthy of protection. “So now, we believe that not only do conservationists and advocates for the recovery of the world’s most endangered wolf, but also the agency itself

- the Fish and Wildlife Service - trusted with its protection, now has solid scientific footing to stand on, to say yes, this is a valid species and we must do what we need to do now to ensure that it is conserved and recovered in the wild,” he said. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has identified nearly 200 certifications and designations for financial advisors alone. For any of these certifications and designations, you should know what each letter stands for, but you also need to understand the education and experience behind the letters. Some designations have extensive requirements that involve months or years of work, while others can be earned in a day. Here are eight questions you should ask to fully evaluate a financial advisor’s credentials: 1. What educational requirements, both

qualifying and ongoing, has the professional met? 2. How many years of experience does the advisor have within the profession? 3. What is the advisor’s professional standing, conduct and character? 4. Has the professional’s competence been assessed through an exam or other type of measurement? 5. What are the professional’s obligations to you, with regard to disclosing conflicts of interest, compensation and terms of engagement? 6. Has the professional committed to putting your financial interests ahead of his or her own? 7. How is the professional regulated or supervised? 8. What consequences does the professional face if he or she is found guilty of malpractice? If you need financial planning assistance, you can help make sure you’re getting a well-qualified individual subject to high ethical standards when you

look for the CFP certification, which stands for Certified Financial Planner professional. If you ask these eight questions about CFP professionals, you’d learn that they have to complete a comprehensive financial planning program and hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, in addition to meeting continuing education requirements. They must also pass a six-hour exam

that tests their ability to apply financial planning knowledge to real-life situations and must have at least two to three years of professional financial planning experience. Developed by the non-profit CFP Board and certified by the International Organization for Standardization, the CFP professional code of ethics and practice standards require those with this certification to provide financial planning in a

client’s best interests. Those found to have violated these standards can permanently lose their certification. When evaluating a financial advisor’s qualifications, understanding the acronyms and certifications in the industry, and asking the right questions, can help you determine the extent of a financial advisor’s expertise and help ensure you are working with a qualified professional.
