Bernie Sanders suspends 2020 Democratic presidential campaign

By Desert Star Staff Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has suspended his 2020 presidential campaign, the Democratic candidate announced on Wednesday, after a lackluster primary showing and the Covid-19 pandemic ruled out any hope of victory. Sanders announced he was dropping out of the race in an email to supporters, vowing that while “the campaign ends, the struggle continues.” His departure leaves former vice president Joe Biden as the sole Democratic candidate going into a nominating convention that has already been

postponed until August due to the coronavirus pandemic. Wisconsin’s disastrous primary on Tuesday may have contributed to the senator’s decision to drop out, as voters braved the coronavirus and dozens of shuttered polling places to queue for hours in the hope of making their voices heard. Sanders had called for switching to mail-in ballots, a measure that was blocked at the last minute by the state supreme court. Lagging behind his centrist rival by 303 delegates as of Wednesday, Sanders faced near-insurmountable Continues on Page 3

3 Things to Know About Asthma By Desert Star Staff More than 25 million Americans suffer from asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health Interview Survey. This chronic condition is so common that even if you don’t have it yourself, you probably know someone – a friend, colleague or child – who does. Health care providers and patients have many tools for managing asthma, but keeping the disease under control can still be challenging. Asthma symptoms result from inflammation, or swelling, that narrows the airways and makes them more sensitive than usual. The most common symptoms are coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. These symptoms can be brought on by triggers such as tobacco smoke, dust, chemicals and pollen, which may worsen the inflammation of the airways. Consider these three things to know about the condition from the National

Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Learn More Breathe Better program, which provides information and resources on asthma, COPD and other lung diseases and conditions to people living with the diseases, their caregivers and the health care providers who help treat them. Asthma is a serious lung disease. While symptoms can range from mild to severe, a person can die during an asthma attack. It’s important for someone with the condition, as well as his or her family members, to know how to manage particular symptoms and when to get emergency medical help. Asthma doesn’t go away, and it can’t be cured. Once a person develops asthma, he or she is likely to have it for a lifetime. In other words, children rarely outgrow asthma. Even when symptoms aren’t present, the condition is still there and can flare up at any time. Asthma can be managed. Like diabetes and high

Photo courtesy of Getty Images blood pressure, asthma takes ongoing monitoring and management to keep it under control. Managing the disease effectively means working closely with a health care provider, taking medications as prescribed, avoiding asthma triggers – like exposure to allergens, poor air quality or tobacco

smoke – and watching for any changes in symptoms. These steps can help anyone with asthma gain – and keep – control of his or her health. Currently, it is unknown if people with asthma are at higher risk of getting infected with COVID-19, but if you do get infected you may be at higher risk of getting very

sick. COVID-19 can affect your respiratory tract (nose, throat, lungs), cause an asthma attack and possibly lead to pneumonia and acute respiratory disease. For more information and resources on asthma, visit nhlbi.nih.gov/BreatheBetter Family Features

NY to fly flags HALF MAST for Covid-19 victims By Desert Star Staff As the number of American victims of the novel coronavirus has jumped over 14,000 and the number of infected began creeping towards half a million, New York Governor has announced flags will be flown at half-mast in his state. The US now has nearly 420,000 cases of the coronavirus, along with 14,262 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University count. The hardest hit state remains New York, which

has recorded 6,268 deaths from the virus. The state has over 140,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, making it the epicenter of the outbreak, as its new deaths have put its toll ahead of Spain, which previously had recorded the most cases of the virus in the world. Governor Andrew Cuomo reported 779 new deaths in his state on Wednesday at the daily press briefing. He said the flags will be flown at halfmast “in honor of those we

have lost to this virus,” which he called a “predator” that preys on the “vulnerable.” Despite the continuing rise in deaths, Cuomo maintains that social distancing measures are flattening the curve in his state, as hospital admission numbers are steadily declining. “The number of deaths, as a matter of fact, will continue to rise as those hospitalized for a longer period of time pass away,” he said of the death toll, adding, “I understand the science of it.

I understand the facts and the logic of it. But it is still incredibly difficult to deal with.” Dr. Anthony Fauci, who sits on the White House Coronavirus task force led by Vice President Mike Pence, said the US could be nearing the “beginning of a turnaround,” but he warned that citizens must be prepared for “a bad week” of deaths first.

‘The Death of Stalin’ for Satirical Laughs

This week my husband Richard and I were good. We obeyed the stay at home edict and checked out “The Death of Stalin” via Netflix. Like all of you, we are hunkering down to avoid any possible virus germs. The dark Stalin comedydrama, based on actual fact, was co-written and directed by Armando Iannucci, the creator of HBO’s “Veep.” He also wrote the Oscar-nominated script for “In the Loop.” Iannucci and fellow screenwriters David Schneider and Ian Martin based their dark film comedy on a French graphic novel by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin. The movie begins with a radio concert featuring Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.23, which turns out to be a favorite composition of the dictator. As the concert ends, the station receives a call from Stalin requesting a recording of the program is sent to him right

away. Terrified, the conductor brings the entire audience back, and the music is replayed, recorded, and rushed to Stalin’s private residence. Meanwhile, the jovial psychopathic tyrant Stalin (Adrian McLoughlin) is entertaining Lavrentiy Beria head of the state terror regime NKVD (Shakespearean actor Simon Russell Beale), Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), Georgy Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor) and Vyacheslav Molotov (Michael Palin). Before they start to watch an American Western movie, Stalin gives Beria a list of people he wants to be executed. Once that is taken care of, its showtime. After film fun time and refreshments, Stalin’s guests depart. Shortly after that, Stalin suffers a stroke. The next morning Beria finds the dictator on the floor. He is still alive, but barely,

so doctors must be called in. At this point, everyone is worried about what should be done. The doctors are especially terrified. After the dictator dies, a funeral must be planned, and a successor must be named.

Beria is determined to take over, and Khrushchev is stuck with planning the funeral. What follows is a factbased farce set in the Soviet era that is so disturbing to some that it is banned from exhibition in the Russian Federation.

“The Death of Stalin,” available on Netflix and other streaming services, is rated R for language throughout, violence and some sexual references. Running time: 1 hour, 47 minutes.

Recognition Awards Luncheon Raises Over $100,000 For Desert Arc’s Programs & Services

By Madeline Zuckerman Recognized as one of the top nonprofits in our community, Desert Arc hosted its third annual Champions of Change Recognition Awards Luncheon with a record crowd of over 270 guests. This highlyregarded event, honoring local companies and individuals who support Desert Arc’s mission of enhancing the quality of life and creating opportunities for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities, took place at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa in Rancho Mirage. “Desert Arc’s annual fundraising events are vital on two primary fronts,” notes new Board Chair Damian Jenkins. “They accomplish the need to broaden awareness of our cause and long-time commitment to serving people with disabilities. And, tantamount in importance, is the fact that both the awards luncheon and golf tournament raise monies to support our non-funded offerings, critical program and service components such as the on-site nursing staff,” Jenkins continued. Mistress of Ceremonies, Brooke Beare, who is also the Immediate Past Chair of the Desert Arc Board, once again served as Emcee, along with Co-emcee Brittany Rieger, an American Sign Language Interpreter. productive members of society. Their enthusiasm is inspirational. This Award forces me to think through carefully just what comes to mind when I think of Desert Arc. Three words keep coming back to me. They are Hope, Opportunity, and Fulfillment. I believe this organization gives men and women with disabilities a shining light of Hope. Some Taking Chloroquine Have Serious Side Effects By Desert Star Staff Some experts warn chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, recently authorized by the Food and Drug Administration to treat COVID-19, can trigger serious psychiatric effects. Dr. Remington Nevin, a physician, epidemiologist and faculty associate in the Department of Mental Health at Johns Hopkins University, says studies have shown that in some people the drugs can trigger a range of neurological side effects, including psychosis, depression, paranoia and anxiety. Nevin says mental health disorders potentially could skyrocket if large segments of the population begin taking the drugs. “If we are going to proceed down this road, at the very least, we should ensure the public is aware of the drug’s

dangers,” he stresses. “Use of this drug on a wide scale will result in an increase in mental illness in the population.” Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine emerged during World War II as a way to prevent soldiers from contracting malaria spread by mosquitoes. President Donald Trump consistently has made statements supporting use of the drugs for treating people infected with the new coronavirus. Nevin adds the negative psychiatric effects experienced by individuals taking chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have been documented in small case studies. “So again, these drugs are what we call idiosyncratic neurotoxins,” he explains. “Which means that some people tolerate them perfectly well, without any side effects,

whereas others are particularly sensitive to these effects.” It’s also unclear if the antimalarials are effective against COVID-19. One study by French

researchers found hydroxychloroquine had no apparent effect on the immune system’s ability to get rid of the virus. The findings conflict with

other studies from Wuhan, China showing that in some patients with mild infections, hydroxychloroquine appeared to reduce their symptoms.

Worried About Your Immune System?

By Desert Star Staff Body aches, fever, chills, and nasal congestion, common symptoms of the flu, can stop you in your tracks, leaving you bedridden for days. “Complications arising from these illnesses can become serious,” says Dr. Suhyun An (www.drsuhyunan.com), an expert on regenerative medicine and co-author of Demystifying Stem Cells: A Real-Life Approach To Regenerative Medicine. Dr. An says there are ways to prevent the symptoms from reaching that serious point. To feel better and get back on your feet, she recommends numerous natural cold and flu remedies to alleviate your symptoms:

Vitamin C. Some studies indicate that Vitamin C can shorten the lifespan of a cold and boost your immune system. “The best way to get it is through your diet; the fresher the food, the better,” Dr. An says. “Oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruits, leafy greens, and bell peppers are all good sources of vitamin C. Be careful with supplements because they can lead to upset stomach and kidney stones.” Honey. Honey has natural antiviral and antimicrobial properties. “Drinking honey in tea with lemon can ease sore throat pain,” Dr. An says. “Research suggests that honey is an effective cough suppressant, too. Honey often contains Clostridium bacteria, so never give honey

to a child younger than 1-year-old because infants’ immune systems aren’t able to fight them off.” Chicken soup. This popular cold and flu remedy helps because hot liquids reduce mucus buildup and keep you hydrated. “Chicken soup, in particular, has anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce a cold’s unpleasant side effects,” Dr. An says. “Keep some in the freezer or even canned for flu season. It’s quick to prepare that way and soothing to eat. Aromas. “When you have congestion from the flu, applying camphor or menthol salve around your nose can help break up mucus,” Dr. An says. “Aromatherapy oils, such as peppermint and eucalyptus, can have a similar effect. April 10, 2020

Also, vapor rub can reduce cold symptoms, especially in children older than 2 years. It helps open air passages to combat congestion, reduce coughing, and improve sleep. It’s a good alternative to overthe-counter cold medicines in young children because of unwanted side effects.” Probiotics. These are friendly bacteria and yeast found in the body, some foods, and supplements. “They can help keep your gut and immune system healthy, and they may reduce your chance of getting sick with an upper respiratory infection,” Dr. An says. “For a delicious and nutritious source of helpful bacteria, include probiotic yogurt in your diet.” “Colds and the flu are threats to us every year, but

they don’t have to get us down for long,” Dr. An says. “Natural home remedies can reduce symptoms so you can be more comfortable and get the rest you need to get better faster.” About Dr. Suhyun An, DC, MSN, NP-C Dr. Suhyun An (www. drsuhyunan.com) is the clinic director at Campbell Medical Group in Houston and an expert on regenerative medicine. By Desert Star Staff The Bronx Zoo has announced that one of its big cats tested positive for Covid-19, apparently infected by a caretaker. Three other tigers and three lions developed a dry cough, but are expected to recover. “Our cats were infected by a person caring for them who was asymptomatically infected with the virus or before that person developed symptoms,” the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement. We tested the cat out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about Covid-19 will contribute to the world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus. The USDA’s National

Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed one positive Covid-19 test for Nadia, a four-yearold female Malayan tiger, but it was unclear whether additional test results were pending for other animals. Nadia, her sister Azul, two Amur tigers, and three African lions had developed a “dry cough” and experienced “some decrease in appetite,” but were otherwise “doing well” under constant veterinary care. While zoo officials expect the animals to fully recover, they admit that it is “not known how this disease will develop in big cats” since different species react differently to infections and the incident apparently marks the world’s first officially confirmed Covid-19 case for a tiger.

Part of Higher Numbers of COVID-19 Cases in Black Communities

In Milwaukee County, black residents make up more than 40 of the area’s nearly 60 COVID-19 deaths reported so far. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff of tracking of COVID-19 cases. MILWAUKEE -- In a handful The information shows of states, including Wisconsin, the pandemic is ravaging racial data is being used as part black communities in places

such as Milwaukee. Health officials say black residents make up almost half of the nearly 1,500 cases

so far in Milwaukee County, and more than 70% of all deaths related to the virus. Patricia McManus, president of the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin, says it reflects years of neglect by local and state health officials when it comes to outreach and resources. She says with the pandemic, the information African-Americans do receive isn’t always helpful. “For example, call your private physician,” McManus states. “Now, I can guarantee you that well over 50%, 60% of the people in my community do not have a private physician.” McManus says the lack of proper outreach is harmful since many people living in black communities struggle with chronic health issues. Local health officials say they’re trying to be more transparent and responsive to these concerns, pointing to the inclusion of racial data in the pandemic reporting.

Last year, both the city and county passed resolutions declaring racism as a public health crisis and the need to address racial bias in decision making. But McManus says efforts to educate communities about virus prevention need to have a more direct and thoughtful approach because residents have felt left behind for far too long. “It’s important for them to have people who they really trust, and right now there’s very little trust in this community around, especially, elected officials,” she stresses. On a national scale, advocates are calling on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to include racial information when reporting cases. They say that will provide a clearer picture of where inequities exist in combating the spread of the virus.

Some Insurers Offer Rebates as People Drive Less During Pandemic By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Two car-insurance giants, Allstate and American Family Insurance, have just announced they’ll refund $800 million to the drivers they insure. The companies say the rebates are possible because people are driving so much less during the COVID-19 crisis and, thus, collision claims have fallen off dramatically. Other companies say they may follow suit. Charles Bell, programs director for advocacy with Consumer Reports, said some drivers could get back as much as 15% of their premium per month. “When you buy an auto insurance premium, you’re rated for the number of miles that you tell the auto insurance company you’ll be driving that

year,” he said. “And if you’re only driving one-sixth or onefifth of the driving miles that you estimated, you could be due for a very substantial reduction.” He estimated that if the pandemic drags on for many months, some drivers could get refunds of as much as $600 this year. Drivers will need to contact their insurance company and ask to be re-rated based on the new, lower number of miles they’re driving each month. Bell said he wants all car-insurance companies to get on board with the rebates, but added that some will need to be prodded. “This is only going to happen if state insurance Consumer groups are urging people who drive less during the COVID-19 pandemic to ask their incommissioners around surance company for a rebate. Upset Stomach First Sign of Illness for Some COVID-19 Patients By Desert Star Staff Some patients with the coronavirus experience upset stomachs, and diarrhea, as the first signs of illness, according to a new study conducted in China. This group of patients had mild cases of the virus overall with respiratory problems showing up later, according to Dr. Brennan Spiegel, coeditor in chief of the American Journal of Gastroenterology, which published the study. Spiegel says symptoms such as nausea and vomiting are common, often related to stress and anxiety, and it’s best to do a reality check before jumping to conclusions that you have the virus.

“Just because I have diarrhea does not mean at all that I have COVID,” he states. “In fact, I almost certainly don’t have it if that’s all you have is diarrhea. It’s really a matter of trying to understand that this is one more piece of the puzzle and we’re slowly trying to fill that puzzle in as we gain this new information.” The study will help doctors make better diagnoses as COVID-19 cases in states such as Michigan continue to surge. Detroit, especially, is the center of one of the worst outbreaks in the nation, with more than 5,500 patients and more than 200 deaths. This is the second study from China with the same

findings. They’re significant because folks without classic symptoms of COVID-19, such as cough, fever and shortness of breath, may go undiagnosed and could potentially spread the illness to others, Spiegel says. But he points out that there is concern that if testing is suddenly expanded to include gastrointestinal symptoms, the demand will outstrip the supply. “In contrast, if somebody has new-onset diarrhea and fever and they are concerned they’ve had a contact with somebody who’s COVID-19 positive, that for me would be enough to consider testing even if they have not yet developed respiratory April 10, 2020

symptoms. But that is not yet a CDC guideline.” The study included 117 coronavirus patients. Almost 60% percent had diarrhea

and 20% experienced it as a first symptom. About a third of patients with digestive symptoms never experienced a fever.
