Big Drop in Children’s Percentage of U.S. Population

decreased by over a million between 2010 and 2020,” said O’Hare. “And it’s dropped even more steeply over the last couple of years since 2020.”

The report predicts the implications for the future are huge - raising the specter of significant shortages in the labor market, which means fewer workers to generate funding for programs that help support retirees, like Medicare and Social Security.

O’Hare said other countries with an aging demographic try to encourage more prominent families by offering high-quality, free, or low-cost healthcare, childcare, and preschool.

how we can provide the supportive infrastructure for those families.”

The data also show that the number of nonHispanic white children has decreased since 2010 - while the populations of children of color have increased in 46 states, plus Washington D.C.

Mayra E. Alvarez, president of the Children’s Partnership - based in Los Angeles, said children of color make up roughly 75% of those under 18 in the Golden State.

Demographer and report co-author Bill O’Hare said American society is aging faster and faster, and younger people have fewer kids.

“The number of children

“The U.S. doesn’t do nearly as much as many other countries in supporting families with young children,” said O’Hare. “If our country is interested in having more children born, it would be good to think about

“These children today are going to be our future entrepreneurs, leaders,” said Alvarez, “our future electeds. So investing in these children is an investment in us and our future.”

Creativity Month in California Diversity, Opportunity push

April is the fifth annual Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month in California, and advocates for the arts are promoting diversity in the arts workforce and celebrating recent policy wins.

In Los Angeles, the County Board of Supervisors just voted to join Arts for LA’s Creative Jobs Collective Impact Initiative, which aims to create 10,000 living-wage jobs in the state’s creative sector by 2030.

Gustavo Herrera, CEO of Arts for LA, said the idea is to rebuild the arts economy after COVID.

“We are focusing on centering youth and adults from historically underrepresented communities,” Herrera explained. “Here in Los Angeles, approximately 59%, or nearly three-fifths of our arts workforce, currently self-identify as white.”

The collective’s steering

committee is putting together recommendations on legislation, budget investments, joint programming, data/ accountability, and cooperative communication efforts - and will report back to the Board in October. Find out more about arts advocacy at ‘Arts4LA.org.’

Meanwhile, artists, advocates, and policymakers are gathering in Sacramento for an Arts and Culture Summit on April 17, followed by a rally and meetings with lawmakers on April 18.

Herrera emphasized that April is the perfect time to get involved.

“It’s so important that we have a strong community of advocates, pushing for arts and culture in every community,” Herrera urged. “And then also, to just go out and experience

the arts and celebrate all of the creativity across the state.”

The summit will celebrate

recent policy wins for the arts sector, including the passage of Prop 28 last year, which

will direct millions more per year toward arts education.

Apprenticeship Programs Need to Better Support Black Students

According to a new report, paid apprenticeship programs are supposed to connect workers with well-paying jobs, but they fall short of diversity, especially for Black students.

Researchers from a Washington think tank called the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies found that Black Americans comprise more than 12% of the workforce but only 9% of registered apprenticeship programs.

Justin Nalley, the senior policy analyst at the center, said millions have benefited since the National Apprenticeship Act was passed in 1937.

“Students and workers

can get into an apprenticeship and not have to take on debt,” Nalley explained. “[They’re] able to provide for their families while learning a new skill.”

The most common programs train workers in electrical services, plumbing, health care occupations, and construction. However, the report found that while 40% of all Black apprentices are in the construction trades, Black workers face rampant job discrimination. For example, statistics show that just 5% of construction supervisors are Black, while 90% are White.

Racial disparities also persist in completion rates. For example, the data show that in

2021, 41% of Black registered apprentices completed the program, compared with 47% of Hispanic workers, 48% of white and Native American workers, and 49% of Asian and Pacific Islander apprentices.

Nalley argued that programs must provide wraparound services to make them more affordable.

“Can we make it to the apprenticeship program... transportation? Do we have somebody to watch [our] kids... child care? Are we able to provide lunch for that day... food services? Are we able to afford the equipment and materials that it takes?” Nalley outlined.

The authors want Congress

to fund more state- and locallevel apprenticeship programs targeting Black students. They also suggested more scheduling flexibility for parents

and commuters and helped to buy tools, equipment, books, supplies, and uniforms. Lumina Foundation provided support for this reporting.

Everything is off for Taylor Swift and her Joe

Superstar

(33) has separated from her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn (33), after six years. The outcomes are surprising. Swift published a love song, “All Of The Girls You Loved Before,” at the beginning of March. This seemed to be addressed to the British actor. Swift, one of the world’s most successful stars with 252.5 million records sold, sings, “All the girls you loved

before made you whom I fell in love with. Now you’re all I need, all I’m thankful for.” And, “I want to teach you what ‘forever’ feels like.”

But there is no “forever.” Early indications of this came as Alwyn did not join her on her current tour. It is not yet known what broke their love. Both still need to comment on it.

For Taylor Swift, it was the longest and most stable relationship so far. Before Alwyn, she had numerous

affairs with other stars such as Jake Gyllenhaal (42), Harry Styles (29), Joe Jonas (33), Tom Hiddleston (42), Taylor Lautner (31), Calvin Harris (39), and John Mayer (45). Now she seemed to have found her happiness. Several times it was even speculated about a wedding with Alwyn. After all: According to “Entertainment Tonight,” the out ran amicably and without drama.

Robert Kennedy wants to be the next U.S. president

The Democrat wants to succeed Joe Biden.

Could there soon be another U.S. president with the Kennedy name?

At least one family member of the U.S. political dynasty is throwing his hat into the ring.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is applying for the U.S. presidency!

The nephew of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, has officially submitted his application for the presidential candidacy in the United States.

The avowed antivaccinationist wants to enter the race for the Democratic Party of incumbent Joe Biden, according

to a document filed Wednesday (local time) by Kennedy with the National Election Commission.

“If it looks like I can raise the money and mobilize enough people to win, I will run,” he tweeted last month.

Kennedy has come under fire for spreading false claims surrounding the Corona vaccination.

Among other things, the former environmental lawyer spread conspiracy theories about the dangers covid vaccination would pose to children. He also accused Anthony Fauci, the leading U.S. infectious disease physician, of “fascism” during the pandemic.

The 69-year-old is the

second Democratic contender for the presidential nomination. In early March, 70-yearold author Marianne Williamson had already officially announced her entry into the race.

Biden has not officially announced his intention to run again in the 2024 presidential election. However, a run by the incumbent is widely expected. If he were to seek the highest office of state again, his challengers would first have to prevail against him in internal party primaries.

Both candidates, however, are considered to have abysmal chances of doing so.

ESOTERIC ASTROLOGY AS NEWS FOR WEEK APRIL 12 – 18, 2023

A SIGN CHANGE, A NEW MOON, AN ECLIPSE, A RETROGRADE & A FESTIVAL

Passover ends this Thursday at the fourth quarter moon of Aquarius. We are in our last week of Aries, the Light of Life itself, seeking those who can be used for Divine Expression. Aries initiates all things new (new ideas from the Mind of God). But Aries needs Taurus to stabilize those “new ideas” and anchor them into the world. Taurus Sun begins next Thursday, April 20. On Wednesday around midnight, we have a new moon solar eclipse.

The new moon is in the very last degrees & moments of Aries (29.50 degrees/minutes). Seventeen minutes after the Aries new moon, the Sun enters Taurus. Everything is fast in this new Age of Aquarius. Solar Eclipses tell us something essential in our lives has come to an end, its usefulness complete. We ponder upon what that would be for each of us.

We begin a second Mercury retrograde of the year Friday, April 21. Mercury retrogrades at 15 degrees Taurus back to 6 degrees Taurus on May 14, Mother’s Day. We will need to summon extra care when preparing for Mother’s Day. In retrogrades we find ourselves more inward than outward.

The New Group of World Servers is preparing for the next full moon festival, the Taurus Wesak Buddha Full moon, Friday, May 5. It’s also a lunar eclipse. During the Wesak festival, the Buddha brings a blessing to humanity from the Lord of the World. Many disciples will be traveling to the Wesak Valley in the Himalayas to participate in this festival.

This Sunday, April 16, is Divine Mercy and Forgiveness Sunday. The

RISA’S STARS

hour each day for forgiveness and forgetting is 3:00 pm. The World Teacher tells us He has forgiven everyone their transgressions. This we too must do for peace in our world. Let us offer mercy and forgiveness to the world. Forgiveness is under the Law of Love and is related to the Will to Good.

Sunday, May 28 is Pentecost, fifty days after Easter. At this time the Spirit of Truth descends upon humanity. Pentecost is when the Spirit of Truth shines out over all of humanity. So humanity can begin to understand and to love one another. These are esoteric teachings.

ARIES: Be careful that you don’t become exhausted with ceaseless work. It’s best if you have your own schedule, your own business, can be independent, working at your own pace and not be frustrated or upset by those who work in a much different rhythm than you. You must remember everyone is not an Aries Sun. There are eleven other signs and rhythms. Everything you do has your own signature and enthusiasm. Gain the respect of others working with you by being generous, kind and compassionate. Soul virtues.

TAURUS: Usually you’re placid and quiet, love good food and seek comfort, ease and pleasure in all that you do. However you also can participate in risk-taking and speculation, which seems like play to others but, to you, is very serious. Often (silently) you’re competitive and you respect those who are independent, sports enthusiasts and good talkers. Somehow you always get what you want and everyone admires you. People wonder often about you. You never tell (your opposite sign being Scorpio!).

GEMINI: Sometimes you feel a sense of upsetness with family and your early years. Sometimes you’re protective of them. Sometimes you sense childhood realities you can’t quite remember. You know present behaviors you don’t understand have roots in childhood. Your instincts tell you something must be done to have a new balance. Yes, it must, but how? First all of your life experiences must be embraced and accepted. Wounds heal when we have compassion for ourselves. We must realize we made family choices before we were born.

CANCER: You’re learning how to speak carefully yet truthfully. Sometimes unknowingly what we say hurts others. You’re also learning discrimination and how to communicate with both understanding and kindness. This takes many lives for everyone. You want to be direct and clear. But sometimes your communication is tinged with judgment and/or provocation. You can be informative and you can be disruptive. Again, understanding is needed. We are all learning these virtues together.

LEO: Always you ask questionswhat is useful, how is something made, what are the steps and methods of creating things yourself? You love things to be practical. But they must also be beautiful, have value, make money, be challenging and allow you to remain independent. This sounds like the types of relationships you seek. This year you’ve been slow and steady in all endeavors. Soon the pace will pick up. Careful to spend money only on things of value. Something essential falls away. What is it?

VIRGO: You can at times react

immediately and with force to new situations and events, like a firecracker sizzling and ready to explode. It’s good to take Aconite (homeopath) if your nerves seem stressed, anxious and uncontrollable. This is the activity of Mars, a fiery force like lightning. This can occur with others, with groups and even friends. You may begin things and then be unable to complete them. This will pass soon. You also may feel a bit of discontent. This too will pass. Then you will shift into a sense of comfort and ease.

LIBRA: Often since January, you have felt stifled, a bit defeated, convinced that efforts won’t be seen, heard or understood. You may have fallen ill. Perhaps you wanted to cease certain ways of living, acting or being knowing this would take time.

You have not felt your usual sense of self-confidence. Often these days you’re overtired. You work well on your own. Your values and principles are strong, yet one aspect of your life feels incomplete, not quite right. What is it? You need more rest, too.

SCORPIO: Certain people in your life actually assist you in achieving your many hopes, wishes and dreams. Most of these people are acquaintances, few are close friends. This is how you like it. You choose only a few trustworthy people to be friends and to support your ambitions and aims in life. You have a warrior sensibility. Whatever your goals, you achieve them. Often undercover and in the dark of the night...for protection. We can learn the art of strategy and war from you.

SAGITTARIUS: You’re one of the signs that seeks freedom above all. This allows you to do independent, original work. You have been given

courage from the stars in order to pursue your own choices and decisions that lead to that independence. Your ambition carries you to the heights and to the depths and sometimes to the “razor’s edge.” When you add charm, care of others, a bit of music and good food to the mix, you are without limit. You become a magician.

CAPRICORN: You love different ideas, a bit of debate, constant learning and a challenge. You don’t like self-righteousness in others, especially about you because you know they don’t understand your character. You’re playful yet serious, energetic within limits. You like to laugh, have a quirky sense of humor, you like your partner (for life) and are seeking new endeavors and a new path in life. It’s on a hill, in a garden with mulberry trees. Chickens underneath. Remember your greenhouse.

AQUARIUS: When you know what you want and need, you pursue them with steadfast focus and over time, everything finally appears (suddenly and unexpectedly). Sometimes you feel no one loves you, or there’s no relationship ahead. You are uncomfortable with anything or anyone that projects glamors or illusion. You uncover things untrue and unkind. You find things. You live in the future, in a place not yet realized by most of humanity. You can be lonely. There are others, magical, like you. Call to them.

PISCES: Cooperation, kindness and forethought are the qualities needed by you in relating to those close to you. Often, it’s best to work one-on-one. Compromise isn’t easy unless you’re studying with and respect one another. You are learning always how to lead and be a leader. A fine and difficult task. Let others feel they are your heroes and heroines. This is the way diplomats work at their best. Diplomacy, compromise, negotiations are art forms. You are an artist cultivating these skills.

– Solar for Our Whole HOA? Can Mine Be On Common Area Roof?

Dear Kelly:

We are a small HOA. We are debating going community solar contract vs individual solar installation contracts and looking for information to help us with the pros and cons of each. Do you have any information, or knowledge of a HOA that approved communitywide solar installation? Can you give us some insight as to the pros and cons of community contracted solar installation?

Thank you, D.A., Poway

Hi Kelly, I live in a recently constructed (small) condominium building, one of (several) in our complex. While I have individual rights to solar, it seems to make more sense to address the buildings shared energy costs; rather than my individual bill. There seems to be nothing in our bylaws to address this situation. What is required to proceed? I assume we need individuals to sign off on their rights and accept a overall assessment. My thought is to do one building first and share the savings with the overall HOA evenly. Other buildings would be added on a one by one basis to spread out the costs. Thanks, R.E., San Diego

Dear D.A. and R.E.: Your HOAs may need to check with legal counsel because some CC&Rs limit capital expenditures without a membership vote

and the cost may require membership approval as a special assessment. It is also possible that a CC&R amendment could be necessary. Sharing of utilities sometimes reduces the economic incentive of conservation, since residents do not directly pay more if they use too much electricity. I have seen this occur many times in associations which do not have individual water meters. You might investigate whether submetering would be possible to measure individual unit usage. I applaud your HOAs for considering such an upgrade to your complex, but take care to consider and resolve any legal impediments from the CC&Rs before you proceed.

Sincerely, Kelly

Hi Kelly: If the HOA owns the roof, do I still have a right to build solar on it? The HOA manager said that solar panels are not allowed on association roofs and our CC&Rs say that the roofs among other things belong to the association. Civil Code 714 and 4746 seem to imply, regardless of ownership, that a resident has the right to build solar on the roof over their head. I would like to verify this is true before notifying my HOA of this in case I am reading it wrong. I would be interested in pursuing legal action in order to build solar if they continue to be obstinate after notification. K.C., Lake Forest.

Dear K.C.: Your manager is wrong. You do have the

right under Civil Code Section 714(b)(1) to install a solar energy system on a common area roof over your personal residence, garage, or carport.

If for some reason your roof is shared (such as in a multi-story building) Civil Code Section 4746(b)b)(1) allows you to pay for and submit a “solar site survey” showing a proposed fair

allocation of the usable portion of the shared roof. Although I have not yet seen shared roofs with enough space to make individual solar installations feasible, it is possible and the statute provides for it.

I hope you don’t need legal action. Best regards, Kelly

Hemet native supports versatile missions while serving at U.S. Navy

Richardson joined the Navy five years ago. Today, Richardson serves as a naval aircrewman helicopter.

“It was a pride thing for me to join the Navy,” said Richardson. “I didn’t want to join the family business. I wanted to do something different.”

Richardson attended Tahquitz High School and graduated in 2016.

Skills and values similar to those found in Hemet are identical to those required to succeed in the military.

“Hemet taught me that if you are going to do something, you should be the best at it,” said Richardson. “I always want to be going forward in my life and Navy career.”

These lessons have helped Richardson while serving with the Navy.

Members of HM 14 fly and maintain helicopters for the U.S. Navy. Navy helicopters can perform many different missions. The most common operations include search and rescue, air assaults, medical evacuations, supply transport,

and hunting submarines.

This year commemorates 50 years of women flying in the U.S. Navy. In 1973, the first eight women began flight school in Pensacola; one year later, six of them, known as “The First Six,” earned their “Wings of Gold.” Over the past 50 years, the Navy has expanded its roles for women to lead and serve globally, and today our women aviators project power from the sea in every type of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aircraft. Our Nation and our Navy are stronger because of their service.

As a member of the Navy, Richardson is part of a worldclass organization focused on maintaining maritime dominance, strengthening partnerships, increasing competitive warfighting capabilities, and sustaining combat-ready forces supporting the National Defense Strategy.

“The Navy is critical to national defense because we maintain a presence across the sea and ensure shipping lanes remain open and free,” said Richardson.

With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained

sailors and a strong Navy.

“Our mission remains timeless - to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every level,” said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. “This is our calling. And I cannot imagine a calling more worthy.”

Richardson and the sailors they serve with have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service.

“My proudest Navy accomplishment is successfully saving an aircraft engine that caught on fire while in flight,” said Richardson. “It proved that the training works and it is effective.”

As Richardson and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.

“Serving in the Navy means a lot to me, and it means I am living up to a legacy,” said Richardson. “My greatgrandmother served in WWII, and every generation in my family from her down has served since. I am the only one in the Navy, so all the others were in the Marines and Army.”

Richardson is grateful to others for helping make

a Navy career possible.

“I would like to thank Chief Dicks because he is the first person to put me

on a straight path and has modeled how to be successful,” added Richardson.

Palm Springs 85th car parade with Nancy Sinatra

Palm Springs celebrated its 85th year with a classic car parade. This is the first of its kind where 85 cars are presented from 1938 until present-day vehicles. Each year, there was one car for a record, possibly a Guinness World Record. Each vehicle carried a local celebrity, former and current mayors, council persons, radio and television personalities, and local leaders and merchants in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley.

The cars were impressive, immaculate, and very shiny.

The iconic Nancy Sinatra was the Grand Marshall of this parade of cars. She rode in a 2001 white Rolls Royce convertible with J. R. Roberts, car owner Henry Janssens and her daughter Amanda. Nancy Sinatra is the daughter of Frank Sintra and has been very supportive of events in Palm Springs. She spent many of her early years here in the Desert.

Hundreds of people

converged on the parking lot area by the Palm Springs Convention Center. People took photos of these illustrious automobiles, many from yesteryear and some very rare but in perfect condition. Celebrities riding in the cars included Fred “The Hammer” Williamson, supermodel Beverly Johnson, Tennis star Rosie Casals, and BNP Paribas founder Charlie Pasarell. Local leaders like Harold Matzner and former mayors. Grant Fuhr

and Gino Lamont from the new Firebirds hockey team. It is hard to name all the 85 people riding in the cars.

This all-day affair kicked off at 1:00 with the parade to the downtown park. Next, cars were displayed by the Forever Marilyn Monroe sculpture. People from all over Coachella Valley came to this free event. The celebration continued with a car show, D. J. Joe Kay, and an Elton John tribute concert at the Palm Springs downtown park. Continued from Page 1

Gorillaz’ outstanding 2023 album Cracker Island features far-flung collaborations with Stevie Nicks, Tame Impala, Bad Bunny, Beck and many more; the album is one of the most exciting albums of early 2023. RK

Blondie – Led by Deborah Harry, the eclectic and influential pop/rock band emerged from NYC in the ‘70s. Best known for Billboard chart toppers “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me,” “The Tide is High” and “Rapture,” plus “One Way or Another,” “Hanging on the Telephone” and “Dreaming,” Blondie’s music is frequently covered and heard in commercials, movies, and TV shows. Since a late ‘90s reunion, the sextet has released four studio albums.

2017’s Pollinator featured Joan Jett, Johnny Marr and Sia collaborations. The excellent Grammy-nominated box set

Against the Odds: 19741982 arrived last year. GP

Chemical Brothers - Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons performed on Day 1 of the first Coachella in 1999. This writer recalls it being a mind-blowing performance. A leading light in the electronica movement, the British duo formed while Manchester University students, first gained attention as DJs and then put out full-length debut Exit Planet Dust in 1995. Through the years, the Chemical Brothers became soughtafter remixers and tapped an impressive array of guest vocalists – Noel Gallagher, Bernard Sumner, Beck, Tim Burgess, Bobbie Gillespie, Wayne Coyne, Richard Ashcroft, and St. Vincent among them – to appear on their albums. 2019’s No Geography won a Grammy. GP

Wet Leg — Rising British indie rock duo Wet Leg feature Rhian Teasdale and Hester

Chambers. Although their appearances at Coachella may be their introduction to many area concertgoers, their 2022 self-titled debut album landed at number one on the UK Album Charts, Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart and the Irish Albums Chart. Thanks to instantly-infectious tracks such as “Wet Dream,” “Angelica” and New Wave-styled “Chaise Lounge,” it’s likely they will have large crowds moving with the music at their two performances in Indio. RK

Saturdays, April 15 and 22

The Breeders – Originally a side project for Pixies bassist Kim Deal (Throwing Muses’ Tonya Donelly was a member on first album Pod in 1990), altrockers the Breeders became a full-time endeavor for Deal once her main band broke up. Sophomore effort Last Splash went platinum in ’93 on the back of top 5 modern rock radio hit “Cannonball,” as well as “Divine Hammer” and “Saints.” The following year, they appeared at Lollapalooza. Various members came and went during the 2000s, but the classic lineup with Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim MacPherson has been together since 2012. Courtney Barnett guested

on 2018’s All Nerve. GP

The Linda Lindas — Los Angeles-based powerpunk band Linda Lindas is comprised of two sisters, a cousin and their close friend. The energetic quartet successfully mines some of the best punk, New Wave and alt rock instincts of the late 1970s and early ‘80s. The explosive “Growing Up” (the title track off their 2022 Epitaph Records debut) captures the youthful spirit of teenagers moving into young adulthood while holding fast to their friendships, the propulsive sound recalling early tracks from the Go-Go’s and the Muffs. Just as infectious is the punk rocker “Oh!,” a track that recalls the sonic spirit of early Devo or the B-52’s. Equally intoxicating is the shimmering indie rocker “Magic.”

All four members of the Linda Lindas (Bela Salazar, Eloise Wong, Lucia de la Garza and Mila de la Garza) provide lead and backing vocals. RK

Sundays, April 16 and 23

Björk – The unique singer put Icelandic music on the map with The Sugarcubes’ 1988 debut Life’s Too Good. When that group dissolved in 1992, Björk went onto much bigger success as a solo artist. Her run

of gold and platinum albums during that decade spawned such alt-rock and dance hits here as “Human Behavior,” “Big Time Sensuality,” “Army of Me” and “All is Full of Love.” Björk’s concerts are always a fascinating visual spectacle – like when she appeared on the Coachella main stage in 2007. The presentation for last year’s intriguing avantpop effort Fossora should be no different. GP

Weyes Blood — Weyes Blood — the moniker for American singer-songwriter Natalie Laura Mering — is appearing at Coachella in the wake of her outstanding 2022 album And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow. The songstress’ style draws comparisons with the celebrated likes of Aimee Mann, Karen Carpenter, Joni Mitchell and Harry Nilsson; indeed her singularly beautiful mix of soft rock and chamber pop completely immerses the listener with layers of vocal and instrumental magic. It’s clear original gems such as “It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody,” “Children of the Empire,” “God Turn Me Into a Flower,” “Hearts Aglow” and “A Given Thing” will create a marvelous moodscape at Coachella. 5 Steps to Sleep Better and Improve Heart Health

There’s more to maintaining a healthy heart than just eating right and exercising regularly. While these practices are essential to cardiovascular and overall health and well-being, getting a good night’s sleep is also vital.

However, more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States are not getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to increasing the risk for cardiovascular conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack, and stroke, lack of sleep may also put people at risk of depression, cognitive decline, diabetes, and obesity.

“We know that people who get adequate sleep manage other health factors better as well, such as weight, blood sugar, and blood pressure,” said Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, M.D., Sc.M., FAHA, past volunteer president of the American Heart Association and chair of the department of preventive medicine, the Eileen M. Foell Professor of Heart Research and professor of preventive medicine, medicine, and pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “The American Heart Association added sleep to the factors supporting optimal cardiovascular health. We call these Life’s Essential 8, which include: eating a healthy diet, not smoking or vaping, being physically active, and getting adequate sleep along with controlling your blood pressure and maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol and lipids, healthy blood sugar levels, and a healthy weight.”

Elevance Health Foundation

nationally supports education about healthy heart habits from the American Heart Association. Some practices to improve sleep health and impact heart health include:

Avoid Food and Beverage

Close to Bedtime: To help reduce sleep disruptions caused by food, avoid late dinners and minimize fatty and spicy foods. Similarly, keep an eye on caffeine intake and avoid it later in the day.

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity can have a noticeable impact on overall health and wellness but can also make it easier to sleep at night. However, exercising too close to bedtime may hinder your body’s ability to settle; aim to complete your workout at least four hours before bed.

Establish a Bedtime Routine: Getting a good night’s rest often requires getting into a routine. Start by setting the alarm to indicate it’s time to start winding down. Rather than heading straight to bed, create a to-do list for the following day and knock out a few small chores. Then consider implementing calming activities like meditating, journaling, or reading (not on a tablet or smartphone) before drifting off to sleep. Also, set the alarm to wake up each morning, even on weekends, and avoid hitting the snooze button.

Create a Comfortable Sleep Space: The ideal space for sleeping is dark, quiet, and comfortable, typically around 65 F, depending on the individual. Use room-darkening curtains or a sleep mask to block light and ear plugs, a fan, or a white noise machine to help drown out distracting noises. Remember, using your bed only for sleep and sex

can help establish a strong mental association between your mattress and sleep. Avoid Tech Before Bed: The bright light of televisions, computers, and smartphones can mess with your Circadian

rhythm and keep you alert when you should be winding down. Try logging off electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime and use the “do not disturb” function to avoid waking up to your phone throughout

the night. Better yet, entirely charge devices away from your bed or in another room. Find more tips to create healthy sleep habits at Heart. org. Family Features

Story and Photos by Par Krause

Act for MS held its 2023 Gala at the Renaissance Esmeralda Hotel Resort Spa on April 5th. They are celebrating 24 years of service to those suffering from Muscular Dystrophy, MS. The night’s entertainment was provided by Contemporary Jazz artist Diane Shurr. This is a fundraiser where all monies raised stay in the Coachella Valley. Guests enjoyed the Music Stylings of Rose Mallett during the Cocktail Hour held in the lobby of the Emerald Ballroom. The event

was also held to honor Suz Hunt, who has been a big part of Act for MS for 15 years and served as their president for four years. Unfortunately, Suz Hunt had been in the hospital and could not attend. Suz sent heartfelt thanks to the guests for this great honor. Suz is a local philanthropist who has served on many boards of local charities.

A video was shown that had photos of Suz Hunt over the years. Another Video showed Bill Marx and his father, Harpo Marx, as Bill

played the Piano and his father played the Harp and whistled. Harpo passed away several years ago and was among the famous Marx brothers. Videos of clients discussing how Act for MS has changed their lives were also shown. These inspiring messages told their stories. One described how Suz started going to the gym and exited her wheelchair. Others spoke about how they would have been housebound if not for the help of Act for MS. Others said the benefit they get have enriched their lives

through social interactions, massages, therapy, Yoga, and more. For example, the late Gloria Greer started acting for MS when her daughter Norma was diagnosed.

After a delicious gourmet dinner, they held a raise your paddle to raise money for Act for MS. They said this was a win-win event where guests got to choose the amount of their donation and got to see how their money was used by client costs shown on the screen. They now serve a hundred clients. They

provide mobility equipment and help with summer electric bills and financial needs.

Diane Shurr brought her Eclectic style of Jazz to the audience. She is a two-time Emmy winner and is now a local living in Cathedral City. Diane on the Piano and her drummer and bassist gave a lot of solo performances. Her style is seldom seen here in the Desert. Guests enjoyed it by their clapping after each song. Then, guests stayed to enjoy some dancing to the music of the Doc Poster Band.

Morongo Earns AAA Four-Diamond Rating For the 17th Year

& SPA

– For the 17th year, American Automobile Association (AAA) has once again awarded the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa with AAA FourDiamond honors for 2023 as an adored destination in the Inland Empire.

“Morongo is thrilled to be recognized once again by AAA with a Four-Diamond rating for an amazing 17th year as we continue to

provide our guests with an exceptional experience that exceeds their expectations,” said Morongo’s Chief Operating Officer Richard St. Jean. “Earning another AAA Four-Diamond honor is a wonderful validation of our ongoing efforts to be the best, year after year.”

When a hotel receives AAA’s Four Diamond rating, the property is upscale in all areas. Accommodations are more refined and stylish, and there is an enhanced

level of quality throughout. The hallmarks of AAA Four Diamond hotels include an extensive array of amenities, a high degree of hospitality and service, attention to detail, and high standards for cleanliness and safety.

Out of the tens of thousands of hotels that AAA evaluates annually, only a tiny percentage receive the Four Diamond Award, making it one of the most prestigious awards in the hospitality industry.

Morongo is also home to the Cielo Steakhouse, a critically-acclaimed dining venue set atop Morongo’s 27-story tower – the tallest building in Riverside County. Having received a AAA Four-Diamond rating for 12

consecutive years, Cielo offers its guests spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and gourmet meals from a menu that features classic steakhouse fare and delectable seafood specialties.
