Palm Springs Museum is a living history museum dedicated to educating the public about the role of Air Power. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Air Museum continues to bring the most important airplanes from all the wars that America has fought to the Museum. These planes are such a big part of our history of aviation. They are celebrating 20 years of preserving our history. They educate our
youth, bring remembering to the adults and Honor our Heroes. There are many planes, plane parts, antique autos, wartime clothing and so much more to see at the Air Museum. Computer generated flight programs and other educational areas for everyone. They bring in planes from
years gone by that give rides to everyone. This March 28th they had a B-25 called the Pacific Princess doing flight exhibitions. This is so exciting to be able to fly in a piece of History. There are merely a few left that fly and just a couple that give rides. This is the same kind of plane that does the flower drop each memorial
day. The Museum honors our heroes in many ways like the gala’s that honor, the living and the flower drop to remember those we have lost. This plane is one of the larger ones they have brought into the museum for flights for people. I was lucky enough to be able to ride in the media flight.
The plane only holds a few people, and the aisle is small. There is no Air conditioner, so they keep one window open for fresh air but that is closed in the winter cold. You can put your arm outside if you want to. The passengers could go to the Continues on Page 2

Governor Brown on January 17, 2014, the culmination of several water conservation orders. Shortly after that Declaration, the California Legislature swiftly passed emergency legislation, adding certain protections to the Davis-Stirling Act regarding water conservation. Civil Code 4735(c) prohibited associations from fining or assessing an owner who let their yard “go brown” by not watering it during a declared state of drought emergency. Now that the statewide emergency declaration is rescinded, the statewide prohibition against enforcing landscape maintenance obligations against owners who refused to water their yards also has ended. This section still may apply if a local jurisdiction (city or county) has its own declaration of drought emergency still in place, so managers and boards would be well advised to check with their local jurisdiction for any such local declaration. Civil Code 4736 rendered
unenforceable any requirement that an owner pressure wash the exterior of their home, so long as a statewide or local declaration of drought emergency is in place. Associations which require their residents to wash their exterior walls may again enforce that requirement, unless the local jurisdiction has its own declaration of drought emergency still in place. While these droughtrelated laws are no longer in force, not everything reverts back to how it was before the drought. Associations still are not allowed to penalize the installation of drought-tolerant landscaping, under Civil 4735(a)(1). Under Civil 4735(a) (2) associations may not ban artificial turf, even after the drought emergency has ended. Many association boards and managers may be misled by the end of the drought emergency, believing incorrectly that associations can now direct homeowners to remove the modifications
made to landscaping in order to conserve water. However, per Civil Code 4735(e), owners who have installed water efficient landscaping measures cannot be required to remove them, even after the drought emergency. So, for example, associations may not force residents to remove artificial turf installed during the drought emergency. Furthermore, the right to install xeriscapes (low water-using plants) or artificial turf still is in place under Civil Code 4735(a). As Governor Brown urged in his Executive Order, California residents should continue “maintaining conservation as a way of life.” Much of California is not naturally rich in fresh water resources, and wise property owners and associations will continue to be conservative with the use of water. Common interest development associations (aka “HOAs”) should have architectural rules in place already to make sure that xeriscapes or artificial turf yards
are presentable and an asset to the community. Keeping the yards well-maintained and attractive is still a proper priority for boards and their managers – and that priority is not inconsistent with “water-wise” measures. The emergency-related provisions of Civil Code Sections 4735 and 4736 were not removed from the law. Instead, they are presently inactive. The next time a state drought emergency is declared, the laws will again apply to California homeowners associations. Kelly G. By Janice Gough It is important to be aware of the Fees you pay for guidance with your financial plan. There are two types of financial advisors; Risk advisors who either charge a fee or commissions or a Safe money advisor who is paid commission only. According to an evaluation done by Russell Investments, Advisors are worth more than four times the 1% fee they typically charge on assets under management. In order to deliver cutting edge advice to their client, they must study the markets every day, which includes staying on top of world events and their impact on investments, new laws impacting wealth management, and new products and their changes. Advisors must be prepared to undertake the complex job of coordinating the accumulation, distribution and transfer of their wealth. Being the voice of reason is invaluable – particularly in an environment that is likely to deliver lower returns and higher volatility, because many investors will ‘buy high’ and ‘sell low’. Russell calculates an advisor’s ability to keep their client to stick to their longterm financial plan and avoid irrational, emotional decisions, is worth 2%. This is based on the average stock fund’s evaluation of investor’s inclination to chase past performance. From 1984 to 2016, Russell reports it cost them about 2% annually. Estimating the value of an advisor, you must review the
different ways financial advisors deliver value – including annual rebalancing of investment portfolios, preventing behavioral mistakes, cost of basic investment-only management, planning costs and ancillary services, and tax-aware planning and investing, then calculate what percentage fee each of those services is worth. Tax-aware investing is one area where advisors add tremendous value, as much as 0.80%, according to the report. Taxaware advisors can add value for their clients by helping them build and implement a personalized, comprehensive tax-sensitive investment approach. This planning and tax preparation, which can add an additional 0.75% in value. Another area where advisors add value is by building and regularly updating a custom financial plan for each client and conducting regular portfolio reviews. Regular rebalancing has the potential to add value, a much as 0.2% in additional return and 1.6% in risk reduction, according to the Russell report. Many advisors also offer ancillary services, such as investment education, assistance with annual tax return preparation, Social Security and retirement income planning, as well as customized requests from clients. These services could cost thousands of dollars if purchased à la carte. Russell Investments’ analysis concludes that standard investment selection has arguably become one of the least valuable parts of an advisor’s value. The greatest value advisors bring is being a
“behavior coach” to their clients. What should an advisor who delivers investment-only management and no financial plan, no ongoing service, no guidance, nothing except for an annual statement, online access and a phone number to call in case of questions charge their clients? According to Robo-Advisors the cost is set at approximately 0.33%. If advisors are delivering all the services and value beyond the cost of investment-only advice, then the total value of
their services is 4.04%. For many advisors, this means that the value they deliver is worth more than the fee they charge their clients.

“Cow Power” Coming to Connecticut?
Animal waste from farms is a source of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. (Cgoodwin/Wikimedia Commons)
Kennedy, Jr., D-Dist. 12, says the project would accomplish several things. “The goal is to deal with the problem of animal waste running into our rivers and streams, and ultimately, Long Island Sound,” he said. “And secondly, it provides an important new source of revenue for farmers.” Farmers could sell the gas or electricity produced by burning the gas to utility companies. The Cow Power bill has the unanimous approval of the Joint Committee on the Environment. Kennedy points out that processing cow manure on the farm would have an additional environmental benefit. “The methane that naturally comes from animal waste is one of the lead destroyers of our atmosphere, and so, it also reduces the

By Madeline Zuckerman Idyllwild Arts Academy, Southern California’s prestigious boarding arts high school, hosted its highlyanticipated, not-to-be-missed Visual Arts Academy Student Exhibition at the internationally known Melissa Morgan Fine Art on El Paseo in Palm Desert. An overflow crowd of 200 guests were in attendance, including members of the school’s Board of Governors, Board of Trustees, Associates, Visual Arts Academy faculty, students, and their families. All enjoyed an elegant cocktail reception, live jazz performance, and could view some of the outstanding works by the school’s cutting-edge young artists. “On behalf of the entire school community, I would like to thank Melissa Morgan
and Melissa Morgan Fine Art for exhibiting our students’ work for a fourth consecutive year, and for embracing our students in this way,” stated Pamela Jordan, President of Idyllwild Arts Foundation and Head of School. “ Melissa loves these kids, and she has visited our campus and spent quality time with them. This exhibit is something the students, as well as the community looks forward to with great enthusiasm every year. This program teaches our students about both the technical and professional side of selling art in a retail space. The artwork displayed here gets more and more substantial,” Jordan continued. On display that evening were paintings, ceramics, drawings, printmaking, computer graphics, sculptures,
and photography created by the school’s amazing young artists. During the evening, each student presented their artwork and talked about what inspired and influenced them to create it. All artwork remained on display and available for purchase at Melissa Morgan Fine Art for six days following the Student Exhibition. “I love my job, and there are three important reasons for this,” stated David Reid-Marr, Chair, Visual Arts Department of Idyllwild Arts Academy. “The first is the work, and the depth and variety of it; the second is the students, who come to us from all over the world and bring with them their own cultural traditions and enormous creativity and curiosity; and the third is the faculty, whose skill, creativity, and dedication guides these
students. In these times of uncertainty, the work you see here represents an alternative reality, one of truthfulness and integrity. The creative process is never easy. Someone once said it is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration, and this is true because I witness this every day in the studio as the students bring their vision into the world. The students are very excited and honored to show in such a prestigious contemporary gallery. The range of mediums and formal skills, and the conceptual and imaginative language of the work, reflect on the program and the instructors who teach in it. As these students develop their creative and formal skills, we also think it is important to cultivate social awareness, so that when they go into the world they are truly

Governor Holds Rally for Controversial Transportation Bill By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Gov. Jerry Brown and his supporters held a rally Wednesday to rev up support for his transportation bill. But environmental groups are protesting a section they maintain will lead to more pollution by big trucks. Senate Bill 1 increases the gas tax and the fee to register a vehicle – and would raise $53 billion over 10 years to repair the state’s crumbling roads and bridges. Kathryn Phillips, director of the Sierra Club California, says it also contains an amendment that handcuffs regulatory agencies so they can no longer require trucks going into certain high traffic areas such as ports, warehouse districts and airports to meet lower emissions standards.
“They produce one of the things that creates the smog that we breathe in, and that has serious health impacts for lung and heart disease,” she points out. The bill is supposed to go up for a vote Thursday. But opponents hope it will be delayed so they can continue to press for the removal of that provision on truck pollution. Phillips says aside from that section, which is technically called the indirect source rules, the bill is remarkably progressive. “With the exception of the polluting-truck language, this is a fair bill,” she states. “It provides new funding for transit, the majority is for fixing stuff not expanding roadways.” California faces a backlog of about $59 billion to repair and maintain the state’s

NSA exploits in what they say is a form of protest against President Donald Trump for going back on his campaign promises, and warning the president, “Don’t forget your base.” The shadowy group first emerged last August and released hacking exploits used by the NSA’s Equation Group, which included vulnerabilities in firewall products, and a list of IP addresses the NSA had exploited, which the group released at a later date. Back in August, The Intercept used unreleased documents from Snowden to confirm the Shadow Brokers’ exploits were authentic. The files appeared to be from up to late 2013,
after Snowden had revealed the NSA’s spying reach. They included code to exploit unknown security flaws in CISCO hardware. The password provided by Shadow Brokers unlocks the hacking tools, which include servers belonging to companies and universities which are allegedly used to deploy malware, according to researchers who have examined some of the documents. WikiLeaks tweeted the dump includes “hacking attacks on EU states, Russia, China, Japan and South East Asia.” Shadow Brokers listed some of the reasons they were unhappy with Trump in a Medium blog post: April 12, 2017
“Goldman Sachs (TheGlobalists) and Military Industrial Intelligence Complex (MIIC), cabinet, #2 — Backtracked on Obamacare, #3 — Attacked the Freedom Caucus (TheMovement), #4 — Removed Bannon from the NSC, #5 — Increased U.S. involvement in a foreign war (Syria Strike).” The group also criticized Trump for launching the cruise missile strike against Syria, saying: “Whose war are you fighting? Israeli Nationalists’ (Zionist) and Goldman Sachs’ war? Chinese Globalists’ and Goldman Sachs war? Is not looking like you fighting the domestic wars, the movement elected you to be fighting.” The group earlier
attempted to auction the “best files” for more 1 million Bitcoin, but abandoned the plan in January. US Navy strike group heads towards N. Korea
By Desert Star Staff The US Navy has sent a carrier-led strike group toward the western Pacific Ocean to provide a physical presence near the Korean Peninsula in a show of force against North Korea’s “destabilizing” nuclear weapons program and looming missile tests. “US Pacific Command ordered the Carl Vinson Strike Group north as a prudent measure to maintain readiness and presence in the Western Pacific,” Commander Dave Benham, spokesman at US Pacific Command, told AFP. “The number one threat in the region continues to be North Korea, due to its reckless, irresponsible and destabilizing
program of missile tests and pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability,” he added. Deployed from San Diego to the western Pacific since early January, the strike group has been involved in numerous drills with Japan and South Korea and routine patrol operations in the disputed South China Sea. It is now headed from Singapore to the Western Pacific Ocean, scrapping planned port visits to Australia. Retired four-star US General Jack Keane said earlier this week that in the wake of recent nuclear missile tests conducted by North Korea, bombing the country’s nuclear facilities “may be the only option left.”
Keane told Fox News that if the US was facing an imminent attack from a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), US President Donald Trump would have to act preemptively. “We’re rapidly and dangerously heading towards the reality that the military option is the only one left when it comes to getting North Korea to denuclearize,” Keane told Fox News. Last month, Trump accused North Korea of “behaving very badly” and “playing” the US for years. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also told reporters during his visit to South Korea that Washington’s “policy of strategic patience
has ended,” noting that “all options are on the table.” Viktor Ozerov, head of the defense affairs committee in the upper house of the Russian parliament, warned on Sunday that there’s a high risk of a US missile strike on North Korea’s military facilities. The US president could make the move due to the absence of unanimous condemnation from the UN Security Council of the US missile attack on Syria, Ozerov said. On Friday, the US carried out a missile strike on the Shayrat airfield near Homs in response to an alleged chemical attack on a rebel-held town in Idlib province, the blame for which Washington pinned on Syrian President Bashar Assad. A total of 59 Tomahawk missiles were deployed in the pre-dawn attack. The Russian Defense Ministry noted on Saturday that Washington has presented no evidence yet that the Shayrat airfield had any chemical weapons. Syrian officials have so far confirmed that six people were killed and several others wounded in the operation. “The US attack on the airfield of the Syrian Armed Forces, which was not unanimously condemned by the UN Security Council, was explained by the threat
of US national security. North Korea can be perceived by Washington as an even greater threat,” Ozerov told RIA Novosti. On Saturday, North Korea lambasted the US strike, saying it was “an unforgivable act of aggression” that also proved that Pyongyang’s decision to develop nuclear weapons was “the right choice a million times over.” “The US missile attack against Syria is a clear and unforgivable act of aggression against a sovereign state and we strongly condemn this,” KCNA quoted an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry as saying. “The reality of today proves our decision to strengthen our military power to stand against force with force was the right choice a million times over,” KCNA said. On Wednesday, Pyongyang fired a medium-range ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, drawing strong condemnation from Tokyo and Seoul. Last month, North Korea, believed to be working toward developing a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead, successfully fired four ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, three of which reached Japan’s territorial waters.
Dr. Said Sadiq, professor of political sociology, told RT that the timing of the attacks couldn’t be more suspicious. “I talked to some people [after the attacks], and they were all criticizing the terrorists and were wondering why this happened at this time: when tourism in Egypt is improving, when the country is stabilizing, there is international support of Sisi’s regime. So, whoever is doing this [the bombings] is standing behind terrorism. It’s simple to say that they are terrorists, but who is There has been heightened security in Egypt, freelance reporter Jacob Wirtschafter told RT, but “the problem is we’ve got 10 million Christians and hundreds of churches, there’s no way to secure them all from a wouldbe suicide bomber.”

At least 36 killed in Egypt church bombings, ISIS claims responsibility
By Desert Star Staff Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has claimed responsibility for two Egyptian
church bombings, Reuters reports, citing Amaq news agency, which is affiliated with the terrorist group.
The terrorist organization said that an IS-affiliated group was responsible for the attacks in Tanta
and Alexandria. First, there was a huge blast in the Coptic church in Tanta, with at least 25 killed and another 78 wounded in the explosion, according to the country’s health ministry. The bomb was reportedly planted beforehand in the prayer hall. The second attack came just hours later, rocking the Coptic Christian Cathedral in Alexandria, leaving 11 people dead and 40 injured. Both attacks come on Palm Sunday, which celebrates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. A few days ago, the town of Tanta was in fact targeted in an attack, when 16 people were wounded in a police training center bombing. The assaults come ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to Egypt scheduled for late April.

As Suicide Rates Rise, Arkansas to Open Prevention Hotline
By Desert Star Staff LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – After a jump in the number of suicides in recent years, state lawmakers have approved a bill (HB 1775) to create and fund an Arkansas Suicide Prevention Hotline. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 577 suicides in Arkansas in 2015, moving it from 16th to 10th place in suicides per capita by state. Wendy Thompson, Arkansas and Oklahoma area director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, says it’s critical for callers to reach a hotline that has staff and resources in Arkansas. “This is vital to Arkansans, to have a 24-hour hotline that they can call and be connected with somebody in the state who can provide the resources,” she stresses. “If their call is routed to www.desertstarweekly.com
New York or Boston, they may not know exactly what we have.” Thompson says the national hotline has been the only option for Arkansans looking for assistance. She says callers often found that national operators were effective in providing counseling, but couldn’t always refer them to local resources. State officials say the Arkansas hotline will be in operation by this fall. The Arkansas Department of Health Suicide Prevention Program will operate the new hotline. In passing House Bill 1775, the legislature approved funding for the first two years. After that, the hotline becomes eligible for federal grants. Thompson says future calls from Arkansas to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will be routed back to
the Arkansas call center. “We know that calling that number when somebody is in crisis can help,” she states. “It’s very complicated and there are a lot of different reasons for that jump, but we feel that having a hotline is really important to turning those numbers around.”
Arkansas and Montana have been the only two states without their own hotlines for suicide prevention. The CDC found that in 2015, Arkansas had a suicide rate of just over 19 people per 100,000 – well above the national rate of almost 14.

HOROSCOPES ARIES
You’re here, there and everywhere. In and out, up and down. The energies are dynamic yet contemplative, fiery yet watery, leading to excessive activities and times of melancholy. Attempt to focus within the heart. This allows all new ideas, not yet to be acted upon, to filter through the question “Is this for the Goodwill of everyone?” The answer allows you to know the best course of action through tumultuous times.
TAURUS You’re often in serious contemplation or study, attempting to sort out details, feelings, instincts, and intuitions. The main key is truth. You may not know immediately what you feel. However, you must still express to others when the timing isn’t right, when the path isn’t clear, when the past hasn’t caught up to the present/future. You know moving forward without right timing is foolish. So many retrogrades these days!
GEMINI Do not be discouraged. Love’s hiding so you can assess your wants, needs, and aspirations first. Pleasure might also be hidden, delayed until just the right time to come out and play. Be very aware of the Easter festival. Since love pours down on all of humanity

Attempt to reconnect with grace and equanimity remembering “Love underlies all events and happenings.” Life creates tests, losses, sadnesses and meaningful encounters, so that we are strengthened. Contemplate on all ideas and dreams being impressed upon your mind. They are messages.

Then contemplate both elements fire and water. When they join, a new reality, new direction and a new awareness of life occur. You need these. as creative with money and finances, day-to-day events, plans, connections and agendas. Even if you feel like an inner explosion might occur, focus on how to bring balance and harmony, caution and care into all situations. The week is paradoxical with polarized realities everywhere. Stand in the middle where the light is. That will be your adventure.
LIBRA You continue to assess what you’re able to provide to others, especially those close to you. You also review exactly what you need. Sometimes realizations can be difficult especially for Librans who want to have harmony above conflict, ease above constant change. You want more depth, meaning, closeness and yet also freedom. Sometimes a dilemma. Maintain silence this week, listening only to the heart of nature. You will forgive and then love more.

Promoters of the programs claim they provide better educational opportunities to low-income and underserved students. But the report found that much of the money goes to elite schools catering to the rich. The report examined 23 of the top private schools in the state, with an average annual tuition of $32,000. Report: Vouchers Fund PA Religious, Private Schools with Taxpayer Dollars
By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Penn. -- A new report says millions of state dollars are being funneled to religious and private schools through two voucher programs. The Pennsylvania House has approved a bill to increase funding by $55 million over the current $125 million level for the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit and Educational Improvement Tax Credit. But Stephen
one of the two programs, and most got money from both. “These programs end up subsidizing some of the most exclusive and expensive private schools in the state; essentially subsidizing, also, affluent families,” he said. On average, the report said, the elite schools received $500,000 in taxpayer dollars each. And Herzenberg pointed out that the 44 percent increase for the programs in the House-approved budget is more than half of
the total increase proposed in Gov. Wolf’s Budget for Basic Education Funding for all public schools. “We should be putting more of the state’s money into public schools, including the public schools in rural areas, which aren’t served at all by these voucher programs,” he said. According to Herzenberg, research on voucher programs in other states has shown they don’t improve educational outcomes.

or too short as it shows us that nothing ends totally “happily ever after.” Going into the woods of life always comes with consequences. The scenic design by Derek McLane is very minimalistic--a ladder, a wire rack for the costumes and a few other odds and ends that might be found in your garage. You really have to use your imagination, which is fine, but in stark contrast elaborate wall plaques representing the stringed innards of countless pianos were mounted on each side of the stage and crystal chandeliers dangled from the ceiling. I found the overall effect a bit distracting. The costumes, by Whitney Locher, like the basic stage set, were extremely simple. The most ornate items were Red Riding Hood’s cloak and Cinderella’s sparkling ball gown. The opening night audience laughed a lot throughout and at the end they gave the show a rousing standing ovation. The cast’s boundless energy and schtick gave this production many more laughs than earlier versions, and the cow Milky White was a hoot. However a few added bits, like the princes riding around on stick ponies, seemed much too cutesy. “Into the Woods,” at the Ahmanson theatre,135 North Grand Ave, L.A.; ends May 14. Niki de Saint Phalle’s Queen Califia’s Magical Circle Shines
Photo by Sue Townsley By Pamela Price There’s a marvelous opportunity to view a rare public art installation, Queen Califia’s Magic Circle, a sculpture garden in Escondido, CA that is the final international project and mosaic fantasy of Niki de Saint Phalle, a French artist who spent her last years in La Jolla. The 12-acre natural habitat is located within the Iris Sankey Arborertum in Kit Carson Park on land donated by the City of Escondido and opened in October 2003. The installation is surrounded by an undulating mosaic circular wall of variously connected

This “snake wall” opens to a maze of white and black mirrored tiles. You are now surrounded by nine free standing sculptures, which bedazzle in mosaic splendor of every size, color and theme, with an impact that is “overwhelming,” said visitor Sue Townsley. The gorgeous patterns emerge a surreal feeling which suddenly recedes when you look up
and set sight on Queen Califia standing on the back of a five-legged eagle seemingly holding court in the middle of the garden. The symbols and forms are inspired by Native American, Mexican and PreColumbian art mingled with the artists’s sumptuous imagery and boundless creativity. This enchanting, entertaining and dramatic installation is already a cultural landmark recognized for celebrating stories and symbols from California’s historic past. It is hard to believe this mosaic miracle is a mere 120 feet in diameter. Every inch is

The Flower Fields By Shirley Brenon Southern California is again celebrating spring with a fabulous display of blooming “Tecolote Giant Ranunculus” that covers 50 acres of hillside in Carlsbad. I visited The Flower Fields about 15 years ago and just returned to this beautiful site last week. It was exciting to see masses of colorful flowers, something we in California have missed with our three years of drought. Not only were there ranunculus but also mounds of larkspur, foxglove, delphinium and many more gorgeous flower beds. For many families, a trip to The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch is an annual pilgrimage and something they can’t get
enough of. Hopefully, it will be a day you and your family will never forget, as beyond the beautiful flowers beds there is plenty of entertainment to suit everyone’s taste. Some of the other attractions include a greenhouse with cymbidium orchids, a poinsettia exhibit with a variety of flowers one doesn’t normally see and a Sweet Pea Maze I wanted to get lost in because it smelled so good. There is a large rose garden, a succulent garden and an artist’s garden that offers beautifully designed, climbing vines loaded with colorful flowers. The 300-by-170-foot American flag created with red, white, and blue petunias on the side of the hill is a

Enjoy your stay by walking along the road or just sit and enjoy the flowers. Photo by Murray Ross tribute to those lost in the September11th attacks. The best place to take a picture of it is by standing at the Costco driveway exit across the street. Additionally, there is sluice mining, many darling exotic birds exhibited in cages and Santa’s Playground that offers sand, grass, slides and lots of benches and shaded picnic areas. All of these items are included in the ticket price except for the wagon rides. Many families enjoy the exercise of walking up the hill to get a closer look at the flowers and to view the ocean and wind mill from the top. If hills aren’t for you then I recommend that you take the wagon up to the top station, and then get off to walk around and take pictures. There are now five or six wagons that make the journey so you can get on the next one when you are ready to go back. After
I returned to the beginning station I walked along the road and continued to take more pictures just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I was there on a Monday but added attractions on the weekends are food vendors as well as musical events and craft shows. During the week, they only offer vending machines, however, there are many restaurants and fast food outlets nearby if you are really hungry. The Flower Fields also encourages people to bring their own food for a picnic on site, which I did and enjoyed it at a table under the trees. Ranunculus Ranunculus are native to Asia Minor and a member of the buttercup family, but the blossoms resemble small peony blooms. This Tecolote Giant strain is available in 13 single colors in addition to mixed colors, which are
called picotees. They are planted from September through January and bloom from February through May. That means that some of the fields may be on their way out when you arrive, while others are just beginning, with a third group just bursting with color. This is really the prime time to go, but there is still plenty to see because of their staggered planting schedule. The ranunculus plants products include bulbs, fresh flower bouquets and finally seeds as soon as the flowers die back. On my way, out I explored Armstrong Garden Center next door and bought a little bouquet of ranunculus blossoms to take home. History of The Flower Fields
The wagons are pulled by antique tractors from the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum. Photo by Murray Ross By Shirley Brenon Today, the fields are a direct result of over 85 years of floral cultivation that began when Luther Gage, an early settler and grower, settled in the area in the early 1920’s. Gage began growing Ranunculus in his fields and started a business called “Luther Gage Giant Tecolote Ranunculus bulbs”. The

name “Tecolote” came from the owls that nested on his property, which was next to Frank Frazee’s small vegetable farm in South Oceanside. ranunculus are now full flowers in thirteen beautiful colors including picotee. Eventually son Edwin moved his ranunculus along with gladiolus to the current site of The Flower Fields, which was land owned by the Ecke Family of Encinitas. Paul Ecke Jr., who had been growing poinsettias there, had just moved their plants into greenhouses. Edwin April 12, 2017
retired in 1993 but stayed on as a consultant to the new grower, Mellano and Company and they still run the business today. Paul Ecke Jr.’s goal to bring people closer to agriculture and Edwin’s wish to have ranunculus live on beyond his death were achieved. Their presence is felt each spring when the ranunculus bloom into blazing fields of color.
Today, The Flower Fields represents the perfect combination of a robust working ranch and regional tourist attraction. Due to the continued benevolence and foresight of the Ecke family, the Flower Fields will continue to be a national jewel, an attraction enjoyed for future generations.

Theatre 29 postpones “Into The Woods” opening one week By Desert Star Staff Theatre 29 has postponed the opening of their upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway fairy tale musical, “INTO THE WOODS”. Because of a medical emergency affecting the family of a key cast member, the darker retelling of the Grimm fairy tales, helmed by the multi-award winning director Charles Harvey, will be postponed one week at the Theater at 73637 Sullivan Road in Twentynine Palms. Patrons who have reserved seats can easily be rescheduled to another date. Please call the box Office at 760-361-4151 with which date you would like to have your tickets exchanged for. The show run has also been extended and will now run from April 28 to May 21st. If none of the dates now work for you Theatre 29 will be more than happy to refund your money.
INTO THE WOODS takes us to the fairy tale world, but not as you remember! The story weaves the lives of the Baker and his wife (who wish to have a child), Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighborhood witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. In the woods, we meet Little Red, a hungry little girl who is off to see her grandmother, the Wolf who loves tasty little girls, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and the Princes chasing their loves. But soon, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. A more mature retelling of our favorite
stories and what happens after “happily ever after”! Under the deft artistic direction of Charles Harvey and musical direction of Kathryn Ferguson, “INTO THE WOODS” will be a show not to be missed. The show is a more mature theme, so parental guidance is suggested for smaller children, but is fine for older children. “INTO THE WOODS” will play Friday and Saturday evenings beginning April 28th at 7:00PM as well as Sunday
matinees at 2:30PM through May 21st. Tickets for all performances (except opening night gala) are available for purchase now at www. theatre29.org, by calling the Box Office at 760-361-4151, tickets can also be purchased via the Walletini app available through Google Play and I-Tunes App Store, through the “Buy Ticket” button on Theatre 29’s Facebook page or by scanning the QR code embedded on show posters at businesses across the

“Mystery Science Theater 3000: Vol. XXXVIII,” a box set featuring four episodes hosted by Mike Nelson and originally aired in the late 1990s. While the overall theme of the show involves poking fun at some of the worst movies of all time, the wide range of references will delight everyone including music fans. Take “Track of the Moon Beast,” one of the four compelling clunkers featured on the new set. There are no fewer than two dozen musical references ranging from the Eagles and Jim Morrison to Nine Inch Nails, Elvis Costello and the Beatles; there is even a great bit of David Bowie’s “Fame” sung to enhance the film (which features special effects by legendary Rick Baker). Other titles include “Invasion USA,” “Colossus and the Headhunters” and “High School Big Shot.” How kind of MST3K to save (and
By Desert Star Staff POCATELLO, Idaho – Idahoans are standing up for children in April, which is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Organizations across the state are displaying blue pinwheels – symbolizing not only the need for awareness of child abuse, but how people can help prevent it. Shannon Gray, program manager for Stewards of Children Initiative at Bannock Youth Foundation in Pocatello, trains adults on child sexual abuse prevention. She says people should never consider abuse of a child something that is “none of their business.” “You might be that only person in a kid’s life or around a kid who could step out, if you receive the
education to do so,” she stresses. “So, it’s a community issue – and we need to start understanding it as a community issue, so we can start preventing it together.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 1 in 10 children will experience sexual abuse by age 18. Events are planned throughout the month, including in Sandpoint and Salmon, to promote adults’ roles in ending child abuse, and people are wearing blue to highlight this important mission. Gray says education is the key to prevention. Signs of child abuse often include a sudden change in a child’s behavior or an aversion to certain people in his or her life.

Matthew Sweet, the Bangles, Robby Rist Tell me more: As a member of the Andersons from 1995-2004, and more recently serving as bassist with the Bangles since 2008, Derrick Anderson has a long history of performing melodic rock and power pop. On his outstanding new solo debut album “A World Of My Own,” the talented singer-songwriter proves his talent vastly outdistances that of a mere supporting player. His 13-track album is bona fide triumph, and the fact that so many famed musical greats join him is icing on the sonic cake. Matthew Sweet provides some sharp Beatles-inspired guitar work on the buoyant “Happiness,” while Kim Shattuck (of the Muffs) and Bangles members Susanna Hoffs, Vicki Peterson and Debbi Peterson provide stellar firepower elsewhere. This writer’s favorite offering is “Waiting For You,” which teams Anderson with the four members of New Jersey’s Smithereens; the results are glorious with the moody rocker fully capturing the melancholyadorned melodic style of the Smithereens. Elsewhere, Anderson’s own stamp carries the day, as evidenced by the driving melodic rocker “Phyllis & Sharon” and rollicking “Checking Out” (featuring some great drumming from Robbie Rist). Yesterday, Cedric Anderson killed Karen Smith because she wanted to divorce him. By Desert Star Staff The “deeply religious man” who entered a California school to kill his estranged wife was in a seemingly happy relationship. In reality, Cedric Anderson was “paranoid and possessive” and in a deteriorating marriage, family members said. On Monday, Anderson, 53, received clearance from the front office of North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, California, to access to a classroom to give something to his wife Karen Elaine Smith, 53, who taught special-education children. Once inside, Anderson quickly opened fire, police said, killing Smith and Jonathan Martinez, an 8-year-old boy standing near her. A 9-year-old boy was also shot but is in stable condition, according
to reports. Anderson then reloaded and turned his .357 revolver on himself. Anderson and Smith were married in late January after four years of friendship, Smith’s mother, Irma Sykes, told the Los Angeles Times. Anderson often posted on social media about their marriage and his faith, referring to Smith as his “angel.” His Facebook page, which is no longer available, featured several posts and videos about is love for Smith all the way up to March 15, the date of his last public post, according to reports. After moving in with Smith, Anderson’s demeanor changed for the worse, Sykes said, and Smith was considering divorce. “She thought she had a wonderful husband, but she found out he was not
wonderful at all,” Sykes said. “He had other motives. She left him and that’s where the trouble began.” Smith, a devoted Christian who had four children from a previous marriage, had been a teacher for about ten years and was motivated to help children with autism and learning disabilities, the Times reported. One of Smith’s adult children, Joshua, said his mother was a “genuinely loving and caring person.” Anderson, however, was “different” at first and later became “paranoid and possessive,” Joshua Smith told the Washington Post. This situation led his mother to leave Anderson shortly after their wedding, he said. According to San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan, Anderson had a criminal history. The maintenance technician had faced weapons charges and was accused of domestic violence in a previous marriage. He was charged in 2013 with assault
and battery, brandishing a gun and disturbing the peace, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records reported by the Times. Those charges were dismissed in 2014. In 1993, Anderson was charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery in Kern County, California, but he was eventually exonerated after the charges were dismissed. Anderson, who frequently posted on Facebook about guns, spent at least eight years in the military and lived in California, Georgia and Nevada. Around 2000, he was featured in a local news segment about housing fees at Nellis Air Force Base. Local law enforcement, including a SWAT team, secured a Riverside home associated with Anderson on Monday afternoon, the PressEnterprise reported. One car in the driveway had a “United States Navy” bumper sticker. The veteran was also a pastor who sometimes
preached on the radio and attended community meetings, according to Najee Ali, executive director of Project Islamic Hope. “He was a deeply religious man,” Ali said. “There was never any signs of this kind of violence … on his Facebook he even criticized a man for attacking a woman.”His marriage to Smith seemed happy, neighbors and others said, which likely allowed Anderson safe passage into the school. “He killed her, and he killed himself,” said Sykes, Smith’s mother. “And I want to see what he’s going to say to God about that.” The school’s staff followed all the proper entry procedures, including asking for identification, according to San Bernardino City Unified School District Superintendent Dale Marsden. Experience The Natural Wonder And Scenic Splendor Of The Rocky Coastline And Giant Redwoods Along Highway One MONTEREY, Calif.-- As you cruise down Highway One from the Monterey Peninsula, you can’t help but feel the excitement building up inside you. Those photos you have seen of the magnificent beauty of Big Sur are suddenly coming to life, appearing even better in person. The dramatic Santa Lucia Mountains to the left are sprinkled with yellow, white and magenta wildflowers. To the right, powerful waves crash onto the rocky coastline as cows graze with their calves in the lush green pasture. It truly is what poet Robinson Jeffers has described as the “greatest meeting of land and water in the world.” “From hiking along the breathtaking coast and wildflowers at Garrapata State Park to driving across the iconic Bixby Bridge to staying in a cabin amongst the giant redwood trees, Big Sur is such a special place where visitors can unplug, relax and enjoy nature’s magnificent handiwork,” says Tammy Blount, President and CEO of the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau (MCCVB). Despite a challenging winter that has temporarily taken a Highway One bridge out of service, the Big Sur experience is still available and as incredible as ever. Visitors are able to access Big Sur and the coastline all the way down Highway One to Big Sur Ranger Station. Iconic attractions, hotels, restaurants and shops north of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge closure including Big Sur Village are open. “The community is delighted to welcome people back and share the place we love and call home,” says Rick Aldinger, General Manager of the Big Sur River Inn & Restaurant. “Our doors are open, and we invite visitors to travel down the 26 miles of beautiful coastline from the Monterey Peninsula and experience Big Sur.” Visitors are invited to come and walk amongst the giant calla lilies at Garrapata, dip their toes in the Big Sur River while enjoying a cold beverage and sleep under the stars in an adventure tent. To help travelers plan their Big Sur escape, the MCCVB offers ideas on places to visit and stay in beautiful Big Sur: • Bixby Bridge: Bixby Bridge is one of the most iconic spots on Highway One. The bridge has made appearances on television shows such as the most recent HBO series “Big Little Lies” as well as on the big screen. Visitors can park in the pullout area and snap photos of the world-famous Bixby Bridge and awe-inspiring landscape. • Garrapata

Explore the western coastal trail that can be accessed at gates 18 or 19 off Highway One to Doud Creek where you will find yourself immersed in a canyon of calla lilies. • Point Sur Lightstation: The Point Sur Lightstation is a California State Historic Park on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse sits on a volcanic rock 361 feet above the Pacific Ocean, and the light has stayed in continuous operation since it opened 1889. Walking tours are available on Wednesdays and weekends. • Glen Oaks Big Sur: Rustic and elegant, Glen Oaks Big Sur offers guests a cozy and comfortable retreat in the redwoods and along the Big Sur River. Visitors can stay in a Fireside Lodge, the Oak Tree Cottage or a cabin in the Redwood Grove. The dreamy Big Sur Cabin has two fire pits plus a pair of outdoor clawfoot soaking tubs. • Big Sur River Inn & Restaurant: The historic Big Sur River Inn & Restaurant has been a staple in the heart of Big Sur Village since 1932. Surrounded by the towering redwoods and along the Big Sur River, the inn provides the perfect escape and opportunity to unwind along the river while listening to the peaceful sounds of nature. • Big Sur Lodge: Nestled deep in the redwood forest of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Big Sur Lodge has long been a haven for writers, artists, seekers of beauty and travelers in search of the peace and majesty that the ancient redwoods bestow on the body and soul. Guests can enjoy a cozy stay here in one of the 62 cottage-style rooms. • Fernwood Resort: From the forest and meadow view cabins to camping near the Big Sur River, Fernwood Resort is a privately-owned facility and
campground located in Big Sur Village. For those who want to be close to nature while still sleeping in a warm bed, the property also offers glamping in the Adventure Tents. • Ripplewood Resort: One of Big Sur’s oldest resorts and a favorite among families, Ripplewood Resort features 17 rustic cabins, a general store and café. Some of the cabins have private decks that are perched over the Big Sur River, so you can be lulled to sleep by the tranquil sounds of the flowing water. • The Village Shops: For many artists, Big Sur is not only a haven, but also a source of inspiration. Next door to the Big Sur River Inn is The Village Shops where visitors can purchase locally made art and gifts at Local Color, visit Dale Diesel’s Darn Glad to be Here Gallery and grab a drink and bite at the
Maiden Publick House. There is also Studio One, which serves as a painting studio, gallery and workshop center. There are additional tent and RV camping sites as well as cottage and cabin options along the river at Big Sur Campground & Cabins and Riverside Campground & Cabins. The winter rains have also affected a temporary closing of some state parks in Big Sur, but they are currently being repaired and are expected to open in the coming weeks. This spring, the MCCVB invites travelers to experience firsthand what Jeffers and other literary figures and artists have captured the magic and beauty of Big Sur.
