New Amphitheater in Cat City By Patricia Price More growth in downtown Cathedral City, part of the city’s plan to provide more art to the community. The newest project is in the form of an amphitheater and it’s being paid for by state grants. The cost of the project $2.8 million dollars and that’s exactly
how much is being covered by that grant which means taxpayers in Cathedral City aren’t spending a penny. From dirt, weeds and rocks, the 2.5-acre piece of land will transform into a masterpiece of art. It’s a 2,000seat theater style amphitheater with multi-purpose use.
KMIR Amy Zimmer As boxing continues to grow in the Coachella Valley, it continues to grow in the Caballero family. Coachella boxer and former world champion Randy Caballero has been making headlines for some time and now it’s time to turn the spotlight to his younger brother, Rommel Caballero. Rommel took part in his first professional weigh-in today at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. The 130.8 lb junior lightweight will make his professional debut tomorrow on ESPN promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. Rommel is a highly touted amateur with only 7 losses out of 126 fights. He will make his professional debut against Eric Rodriguez (1-2) of Los Angeles in a 4-round bout.
Javier Padilla (5-0-1, 5 KOs) of Indio will face Ricardo Arias (1-2-1) of Mexico City in 4-round fight in the 122-pound division. Roy Jones Jr., a six -time world boxing champion, will be the special VIP guest. Jones will conduct a meet and greet with fans before the Francisco Vargas versus Rod Salka main event. Vargas trains in Indio and has been preparing to improve his record 24-1-2 record in a 10-round bout against Salka (24-4, 4 KOs). Doors open at 4 p.m. and the first fight begins at 4:45 p.m. Tickets start at $25 and are available at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Box Office, by calling 1-800-8272946, or online at http:// www.fantasyspringresort. com. “We’re needing more festival space,” said Chris Parmon with Cathedral City. From the Hot Air Balloon Festival to LGBT Days, Cathedral City is working to build those events even more. “To be able to give us that space for outdoor concerts, movies in the park,
art shows,” said Parmon. It’s part of a bigger plan to bring arts to the downtown area. Right now, steps from where the future amphitheater will sit, the old Desert Cinemas building is under construction. The building was bought out by CV Rep, soon putting on theater productions for
surrounding communities. And now the addition of the amphitheater will have the entire community in mind. “Walking trails, children’s play areas, permanent restrooms,” said Parmon. It’ll be open day in Continues on Page 3

Almost 400 Safety Violations in Offshore Oil Facilities Since 2015
Oil facilities on several man-made islands off of Long Beach and Seal Beach have racked up 293 state violations since 2015.(Donielle/Wikimedia Commons)
Steve Jones, media specialist for the Center for Biological Diversity, says the operators need to make repairs to avert a catastrophic blowout. “And we do think that there’s criminal neglect of public safety going on in the offshore-drilling system in state waters right now,” says Jones. A spokesman for the state Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources says the well-head corrosion issues have been resolved at Platform Eva off of Huntington Beach and Platform Esther off of Seal Beach, and notes that stepped-up enforcement led to the discovery of the violations. But the agency is still working to verify that mechanical-integrity tests have been completed and passed at the offshore islands in Long Beach. A spokeswoman for California Resources Corporation, which co-
owns those facilities, says the company believes it is in compliance. Jones says in 2015 a severely corroded pipe burst on the beach north of Santa Barbara, spilling 120,000 gallons of crude. And the state is getting ready to spend $100 million to clean up two platforms left to rot after their owners declared bankruptcy. “We’re going to see a lot more problems in the years to come if the state doesn’t take this seriously and start decommissioning some offshore infrastructure that is at the end of its useful life,” says Jones. The safety violations in this report are all in state waters and are not related to oil platforms in federal waters off the coast of California. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump lifted an Obama-era ban on drilling in almost all federal waters. Lease sales for new drilling will begin in California next year.
By Desert Star Staff LONG BEACH, Calif. – Offshore oil operations in southern and central California have racked up almost 400 violations over the past three years – according
to an examination of public records done by the Center for Biological Diversity. The group’s research showed that regulators found major corrosion on multiple aging offshore drilling
By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – Pennsylvania is lagging behind some other states in creating the infrastructure to support electric vehicles, but a bill making its way through the Legislature could change that. Transportation is one of the main sources of carbon pollution. But without a reliable network of charging stations, consumers are reluctant to switch to clean electric vehicles. Noah Garcia, transportation policy analyst with the Natural Resources Defense Council, says passage of House Bill 1446 would be a major win for clean energy in the Commonwealth. It would establish a statewide goal for transportation electrification. “That goal would be to achieve levels of transportation electrification at least 50 percent above what would be
expected to be business as usual by 2030,” says Garcia. HB 1446 passed the House Transportation Committee with strong support and is expected to reach the floor of the House for a vote in the coming weeks. Garcia notes that the bill also would require the state’s electric utilities and electric-vehicle charging service providers to create and implement a plan to meet the electrification goals. “Those plans will include the deployment of charging infrastructure necessary to support a greater number of electric vehicles in the state,” says Garcia. There are currently fewer than 300 charging stations and about 12,000 electric vehicles in Pennsylvania. In contrast, New York now has 600 charging stations and 30,000 electric vehicles.
Garcia notes that H-B 1446 has broad support not only from environmentalists but from vehicle manufacturers and business. “We’re really seeing electric utilities playing a key
and complimentary role in breaking down barriers to EV adoption,” says Garcia, “that we think is necessary not only to fight climate change but to modernize our transportation systems, clean up our air and
boost economic growth.” He adds that as electric vehicles get more efficient and extend their range, expanding the charging infrastructure will become critical to support growing demand.
By Max Rodriguez Tens of thousands of visitors will flock the Coachella Valley this festival month, and a local mom and pop shop is ready to welcome the foot traffic. Beer, water and ice will be on extra demand at LG Desert Store in Indio during the weekends of April. Richard Thomas is the general manager and he said the store has been a family operation for over 30 years, and going strong, but once festival season arrives his sales go through the roof. “We’re double up on
beer, water, monsters, and cigarettes,” Thomas said. “We get thousands of people everyday, it is crazy.” He said the extra foottraffic not only comes from festival goers, but also the thousands of employees that the event hires. Thomas said, “Police come by, security guards come by, the truckers come by, it is amazing, we will even have an artist drop by every once and a while.” The Red Hot Chili Peppers are on his customer roster, but LG Desert Store is just
one of many local businesses that benefit from the tourism brought by the events. Joshua Bonner is the president of the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce, and he said the festivals can bring business in unexpected ways. Bonner said, “One of the artists that is coming needed help with alterations and so they hire local staff for that.” A report from the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership said last year’s festival season brought in $400 million to the Coachella
Valley, and $700 million to the surrounding region. Bonner said there is no denying that the festivals makeup for the slower summer months of business, he said, “Sitting at the end of the season helped to really expand the shoulder all the way to
April, that’s a massive impact our economy in every level.” And Thomas at LG Desert Store can relate, he said, “This helps us get through the summer, we will do double what we do in July and August.” Source KMIR

Governor Brown Agrees To Deploy Troops At Trump’s Request
KMIR News Staff California’s governor has agreed to deploy 400 National Guard troops at President Donald Trump’s request, but not for immigration enforcement. Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement Wednesday that the state will accept federal funding to “supplement the staffing of is ongoing program to combat transnational crime.” The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights responded to Brown’s announcement and said they agree that the National Guard “will not be used as an extension of President Trump’s deportation machine.” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at the press briefing Wednesday that the

(Sean Thompson) and has a son named Gustave (a very talented Jake Heston Miller who alternates with Casey Lyons.) All is not well as Raoul drinks and gambles. To refill the financial hopper, Christine agrees to accept an invitation to sing in New York at a famous opera house so the family leaves Paris and sets sail for the new destination. There is an enchanting sequence of she and her family disembarking from a ship to be met by a coterie of photographers and then are whisked away in a “horseless carriage,” huge enough to accommodate the “Jolly Green Giant.” Christine and her family are ensconced in a hotel room with a mirror looming in the background and as you might expect, the Phantom emerges through the mirror and with his Svengali hold over her, lures she and her family to the phantasmagoric world of Coney Island illuminated by Nick Schlieper spectacular lighting design comprised of thousands of sparkling, towering, cascading lights, with a gigantic ferris wheel ablaze with shimmering radiance. There is an assortment of clowns and “freaks,” three of which include a trio of Phantom’s henchmen playfully brought to life by Katrina Kemp as Fleck, a tiny person tossed around like a beach ball in the hands of Squelch (Richard Koons,) and Gangle (Stephen Petrovich). Like in opera and the original Phantom, the narrative is told through music with 30 musical numbers including the dramatic opening song ‘Til I Hear You Sing,’ an introduction to Gardar Thor Cortes’ mesmerizing, soaring voice. While there are no songs that you will leave the theatre humming, nevertheless the score has an overall beauty with an occasional bar of music reminiscent of the
original Andrew Lloyd Webber score, which somehow ties the two productions together. Dale Rieling’s excellent music direction of the orchestra was augmented by Mike Potter’s sound design resulting in pitch perfect musical numbers some of which include, ‘Once Upon Another Time’ (Christine and The Phantom;) the tender ‘Look With Your Heart,’ (Christine and Gustave;) the fun ‘Bathing Beauty Rehearsal’ (Meg with the male ensemble dressed in black and white bathing attire of the turn of the century;) ‘Dear Old Friend,’ (Meg, Christine, Madame Giry, and Raoul;) ‘Why Does She Love Me? (Raoul and Meg;) and ‘Conclusion,’ a heartbreaking duet between Christine and The Phantom, concluding with the revelation of a deep secret about Gustave. Whatever one might think is missing from the storyline, with Simon Phillips’ masterful direction of his Broadwaycaliber musical cast, coupled with eye-popping production values, “Love Never Dies” is an entertaining and most satisfying theatrical experience. “Love Never Dies” Hollywood Pantages Theatre 6233 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90028 Run: Tues – Fri: 8:00 pm Saturday: 2:00 pm & 8:00 pm Sunday: 1:00 pm & 6:30 pm Individual Tickets start at: $49 Closing: Sunday, April 22, 2018 Tickets: In Person: Hollywood Pantages Box Office HollywoodPantages.com Ticketmaster.com - 1-800-982-2787 or (Ticketmaster Outlets) Parental Advisory: Ages 12 and up (Children under five will not be admitted to the theatre.) www.desertstarweekly.com

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 9th Annual Desert Arc Golf Classic and Dinner was held at Fantasy Casino Resort Spa. The golf was played at the stunningly beautiful Eagle Falls Golf Course at Fantasy in the best ball format. There were about 130 golfers that vied for the first and second place, longest drive and closest to the pin contests. The sizeable silent auction was busy with bidders. The golf course was in magnificent condition with many challenging water holes.
Board member Nancy Singer served as Event Chair along with former board member, Jay Chesterton who served as Honorary Event Chair. Chesterton is also the Vice President of Hotel and Food & Beverages for Fantasy Spring Resort Casino. The emcee was Booke Beare, local anchor of CBS Local 2. Guests brought their playing partners and guests to the buffet dinner at the Special Events Center at Fantasy. This event has grown each year into one of the most enjoyable
and fund days that help raise funds for a local charity. Golfers wandered into the Special Events Center to the smell of delicious foods at the buffet tables. The chefs were busy preparing as you like it foods along with the cooked dishes and salads. There was a huge dessert table at one end for guests with a sweet tooth. The live auction included an electric bicycle that had Nate Otto riding it around all the tables to show how quickly it was to ride. Other live auction
items went soon for a lot of money to help with Desert Arc Programs. Josh Rushlow was excited that his bid for VIP tickets to Coachella Fest won. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Desert Symphony celebrated its 29th anniversary at the McCallum Theatre on Saturday, April 7th. Gary Berkson was the music Director and did his usual great job with the Orchestra. The event starred the famous Boz Scaggs. Skaggs has had a remarkable career with numerous hits to his credit. He is not only a great singer but a prolific songwriter as well. He probably is best
known for some of my favorite songs, Look What You’ve Done To Me, Heart of Mine and We’re All Alone. Skaggs and his band continue to tour nationally and worldwide. He and his wife are also vintners as they grow their grapes and make their wine. One of the unique parts of this evening was the announcement of the honoree for the Prestigious Amadeus Award. That award went to Raju Mehta for his
philanthropy in supporting The Arts and musical education for Children thru the McCallum Theatre. Mehta is the owner of El Paseo Jewelers and general manager and an essential part of the Valley Community. Mehta has been instrumental along with President of the Desert Symphony, Nancy Tapick, in growing the Symphony and its programs over the years by working together. Mehta and his wife Jaishri support
many other charities in the Valley like Desert Aids Project and Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, as well as the McCallum Theatre and all its programs and so much more. President Nancy Tapick said this Gala is the major fundraiser of the year. The Desert Symphony brought 2,200 area school children to learn about and hear this kind of music. It created a lifetime memory for those children and hoped that they
found a love for classical music. A collaboration with the McCallum Theatre’s Education Programs where children hear live music and can get an appreciation for Music in all forms. Tapick thanked all supporters of Desert Symphony which included individuals, businesses, and cities saying that by working together it makes all this possible.

By Desert Star Staff Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper has gathered enough votes to trigger a referendum on splitting California into three separate states. Draper’s CAL 3 campaign has gathered 600,000 signatures supporting the split since he proposed the initiative last August. He told the Telegraph that 600,000 signatures was a “milestone” and sent a message that people across California would “create a brighter future for everyone.” With only 364,000 signatures needed to force a referendum, a vote will be held on the proposal this November, alongside the midterm elections. Draper’s proposal envisions splitting California into three separate states. Northern California, which would include San Francisco and Sacramento; Southern California, including San Diego, San Bernardino, and the Mojave Desert; and California, a sliver of
coastline taking in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. The three proposed states are split fairly evenly by population but differ in terms of median income and leading industry. The massive wealth generated by Silicon Valley has driven median household income in Northern California to $63,000. Southern California depends more on manufacturing and wholesale and has a median household income of $45,000. Draper argues that the three diverse regions would be better served by their own, smaller governments. It’s not the first time Draper has tried to split the Sunshine State. In 2013, the billionaire pumped over $5 million dollars into a ballot initiative to divide California into six smaller states. The campaign failed to gather enough signatures however and died in 2014. “Nobody took it seriously,” Steve Maviglio, a political consultant working against the initiative, told the Sacramento Bee. This time, Draper is
serious. As well as scaling back his ambitions from six states to three, Draper enlisted the help of former UKIP leader Nigel Farage in 2016, to learn from the Brexit campaign’s success. Having coached Donald Trump before his final debates with Hillary Clinton and lending his support to anti-EU voices in the Netherlands, Farage is no stranger to pitching in to help anti-establishment figures outside Britain.
If a November referendum were to be successful, Congress would still have to authorize the split due to its national significance. Draper is not the only figure calling for radical change in California. Last year, the #Calexit secessionist movement proposed breaking the state’s ties with the US altogether. A proposal was launched on Valentine’s day 2017 with the tagline: “Valentine’s Day in America
sees the most divorces. Perfect time for us.” The campaign will start collecting signatures on April 20. Home to almost 40 million residents and with a GDP of $2.75 trillion, California is a cultural and economic powerhouse. If the state were considered separate from the US, it would be the world’s fifth-largest economy, ranking between Germany and the UK.

Wyoming Education Cuts Unlikely to Produce Strikes By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Public education supporters in Wyoming are keeping a close eye on the latest teachers’ action, this time a “walk-in” yesterday in Arizona where educators, along with parents and community members, marched into schools calling for a 20 percent raise and a boost in education spending. Nate Martin, director of the group Better Wyoming, said even though Wyoming’s legislature has cut $100 million from public schools in the past three sessions, he doesn’t expect to see teachers chanting on the steps of the Capitol building in Cheyenne any time soon. “The Legislature is steering Wyoming in the direction of these other states in terms of defunding its public schools, freezing teacher salaries, shutting down schools,” Martin said. “Although the blowback is going to be different, the trajectory is the same.” Wyoming’s constitution guarantees every student the right to an adequate education, so, Martin said, school districts
