By KMIR Angela Monroe Indio, CA - We’re officially a day away from one of the biggest music festivals in the world held right here in the valley.

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is held in Indio, and this year will be bigger than ever.

“The day of, this street on Monroe is just totally packed you can’t even get out from this neighborhood,” said Indio resident, Austin Daut.

Daut lives about a quarter

mile from the massive event.

He hopes to see some traffic changes this year.

“Last year the people in charge of doing the traffic were doing terrible,” said Daut.

City of Indio officials say they are working with residents. Last year, the city council approved larger amounts of people. In 2016, the cap was 99,000; this year about 26,000 more people will be on the grounds.

they’re trying to make it a big experience for the guest that come this year,” said Curtis.

It sounds like everything this year, will be bigger.

“It brings a lot more money into the valley, but unless they can manage everything better, then it’s not going to be really good for all the residents,” said Daut.

City of La Quinta Proactively Addresses Festival Traffic Concerns has added additional resources to help ease the flow of traffic as well as reached out to greater collaborate with the City of Indio and Goldenvoice on traffic.

Goldenvoice is working on making every effort for fasttrack entry from street traffic to the venue. La Quinta Police Department has also been contacted and is assisting in the field to make every effort to free up the congestion. The City of La Quinta is currently seeking measures to reduce traffic on city streets for this weekend’s event as well as preparing for

next weekends second event.

The City of La Quinta is asking all travelers to remain in their vehicles and to not respond to drivers that may become impatient. By Desert Star Staff David Dao, the passenger who was brutally removed from a United Airlines flight, suffered a “significant” concussion, a “serious” broken nose and lost two front teeth in the ordeal, according to his lawyer.Dao was dragged from a Louisvillebound flight by three Chicago aviation police officers Sunday after the physician refused to give up his seat to airline crew.

United’s reputation has suffered immensely from the fallout of the incident, footage of which was shared widely online.

Dao’s lawyer, Tim Demetrio, spoke at a news conference in Chicago Thursday to comment on his client’s condition and update the media on their legal intentions.Demetrio, who described the police in the

incident as “storm troopers”, said Dao was discharged from hospital Wednesday after spending three days recovering from the incident. He said Dao will need reconstructive surgery to repair what he says is a badly broken nose.Dao’s lawyer said their case has nothing to do with race, but everything to with the continued mistreatment of passengers by airlines and “United in particular”.

“If you’re going to eject a passenger under no circumstance can it be done under unreasonable force or violence, that’s the law,” Demetrio added.

The family received no apology from any representative of United, said Demetrio, despite the airline’s CEO Robert Munoz claiming to have reached out on

multiple occasions. Demetrio went on to call Munoz’ public apology on Wednesday’s ‘Good Morning America’ “staged” and suggested it was an insincere attempt from the airline to save face.One of Dao’s five children, Crystal Dao Pepper, appeared at the news conference to thank well-wishers for their outpouring of support and said she and her family were “horrified, shocked and saddened to see what had happened to [Dao].”

Williams Syndrome: Honoring the Memory of Jonathan Martinez

By Angela Monroe, Anchor/Reporter Palm Desert, CA -The community is mourning after the death of an 8-year-old boy at that school shooting in San Bernardino.

Jonathan Martinez was in a class for children with disabilities, and his parents want to raise awareness about his condition.

His family wants to honor his memory by getting the word our about Williams Syndrome.

A local young woman knows it well because she has it, and wants to share her story.

“I am so sorry that you had to lose a child with the same thing as me because I know it’s very difficult.”

“Even though I didn’t know him, even though some of my other friends didn’t know him, we all feel like we did know him somehow or someway and we just have that connection.”

As far as Megan knows, she’s only person in the Coachella Valley with Williams Syndrome.

Dr. Hilal Abu-Zahra with University of California Riverside says, “Williams syndrome is a genetic syndrome characterized by unique facial features as well as a social and happy personality trait.

As well as, it does come with a heart condition problem as well as potential for electrolight abnormalities and a intellectual disability as well.

Megan said, “I have heart issues myself...the problem is that we’re not always that

happy.... Because sometimes its hard to be myself because I know I have a disability too.”

Those with Williams Syndrome tend to be gifted with striking verbal abilities, social personalities and an affinity for music.

“I play the guitar, I like to sing, I like to hang out with friends and stuff like that,” said Megan.

Megan goes to school and works two jobs.

Megan already works to raise awareness about Williams Syndrome, and that’s what Jonathan’s family said they wanted as a small light in the darkness of the murder of a child.

“I don’t understand why someone would do something like that to an innocent young child who could have grown up and lived a normal life, and he would have had a chance,” said Megan. Source KMIR

KMIR News Staff Mecca, CA -A 30-acre brush fire in Mecca prompted authorities to cut power to local residents today but was contained without anyone

By Desert Star Staff BOSTON -- Consumer and public health advocates are applauding the latest pledge by a fast food chain to phase out its use of chickens raised on antibiotics. Kentucky Fried Chicken has announced that by the end of 2018, all chicken purchased by the company will be raised without having received any of the antibiotics that are important to human medicine.

Mathew Wellington, program director at the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group, or MASSPIRG, said the move makes sense given the global concern about the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

“Bay Staters and consumers across the country

should certainly be happy that KFC, a major actor in the marketplace, is moving away from the use of antibiotics,” Wellington said. “It’s a big step forward for public health.”

Farmers use antibiotics to grow chickens faster and to prevent diseases in crowded conditions. Reuters has reported that some poultry producers have turned to sanitizing wipes and bacteria-reducing fog to keep birds healthy.

Wellington said the KFC decision has particular significance in Massachusetts, because the state is a leader in medical care and research.

“We’ve got universities and medical systems in the Boston area that are world class, and those doctors rely on antibiotics

to treat sick people,” he said.

“And so, KFC’s announcement is going to help preserve these medicines for the future.”

Wellington said MASSPIRG has been active with other consumer groups in asking national restaurant chains to end their use of poultry raised with antibiotics. But, he said KFC’s move is in an entirely different league.

“Their size - they’re one of the biggest chicken buyers in

the fire threat, cutting power to several hundred residents at the Saint Anthony Mobile Home Park, officials said.

The American Red Cross and Riverside County’s Emergency Management Department were called in to help the mobile home park residents, as well as several transients who lived in the palm grove, Newman said.

More than 50 firefighters on scene faced gusts of up to 15 mph while they attempted to contain the flames.

At 8 a.m., the blaze was contained at 30 acres in heavy brush and palm trees.

Nancy Tapick President of The Desert Symphony spoke to the audience about the sad passing of Al Jarreau who was to be the entertainer for

this event. The beautiful singer LeAnn Rimes stepped in to take his place so this concert could go on. This gala is the major fundraiser for The Desert Symphony. Tapick thanked all for coming and being such big supporters of the Symphony.

Tapick also asked all veterans to stand and be

acknowledged with a standing ovation. The Honoree for the night was the incomparable Ruta Lee. Ruta Lee was honored with the Amadeus award and is the first woman to receive this Award. Lee is such a presence wherever she goes. She had the audience in laughter with her jokes.

Ruta Lee continues to perform and is actively involved with, The Thalians, a charitable organization that works with mental illness in all ages.

The event started at 7 PM and lasted until late in the evening. People started coming early, and many still came later all night long. There was a DJ that played music for dancing, and white tablecloth tables were set up for seating

and eating. There was a buffet of foods and a special treat of Caviar. Prince Mario-Max and his family brought four kinds of Russian Caviar, the best I have ever sampled not fishy or salty, just amazing flavor.

Guests could try all four kinds.

Guests were treated to refreshments in glasses that lit up. Many came in costume as it was a masquerade party.

The event was put on to help

veterans and their families.

Prince Mario-Max brought his family to this event, all the way from Europe. His father is H.H. Prince Waldemar, and his mother is H.H. Dr. Princess Antonia zu SchaumbergLippe. They are descendents from the royal Danish Nachod Line of the Princely House of Schaumburg-Lippe, Founding Family of Hamburg, Lubeck and Kiel in Germany.

It was thrilling to have royalty in our Valley. Several hundred guests came to be a part of this fun evening.

The Royal family made a grand entrance at 7:30 and were so gracious as to take selfies with guests and talk to everyone. Prince MarioMax is also a TV star, author, public speaker, actor, cover model and entertainer.

Gary Berkson. The symphony orchestra started playing to a very silent audience that enjoys their magnificent music. The Orchestra has been playing for a long time for most of the concerts at the McCallum.

They gave tribute to Billie Holiday with arrangement by Lee Norris and Ladies Only by David Matthews and Lee Norris.

LeAnn Rimes started her concert performance after Intermission. She sang some of her award-winning songs.

She is a country, blues and pop singer and has sold millions of records. Rimes is known as an acclaimed singer and has won awards as a songwriter.

She continues to be a top artist in the music world and has won so many awards its hard to count. She sang with 2 guitarists and a drummer. She sang many songs with the help of the symphony Orchestra that sounded amazing. They filled the sold out theatre with fantastic music. The Desert Symphony will host another concert with Lucie Arnaz soon.

The Party had mega prizes along with great food.

There was a prize for Mr.and Mrs. Popular, chosen by the audience. There was a search for a Prince to be awarded and a Mr. and Mrs. Royal Elegance. Finalists were chosen by a hidden jury. It was a fun night to rub elbows with royalty. The Prince has made many friends in our Desert.

I found the overall effect a bit distracting. The costumes, by Whitney Locher, like the basic stage set, were extremely simple. The most ornate items were Red Riding Hood’s cloak and Cinderella’s sparkling ball gown.

The opening night audience laughed a lot throughout and at the end they gave the show a rousing standing ovation. The cast’s boundless energy and schtick gave this production many more laughs than earlier versions, and the cow Milky White was a hoot. However a few added bits, like the princes riding around on stick ponies, seemed much too cutesy.

’Fast & Furious’ cartel hitman who killed Border Patrol agent arrested in Mexico

By Desert Star Staff The drug cartel hitman suspected of killing US Border Patrol agent Brian Terry has been arrested in Mexico. Terry’s death in 2010 exposed the US government’s gunwalking operation involving Mexican drug cartels, dubbed ‘Fast and Furious.’

Heraclio Osorio-Arellanes, identified as the man who fired the shots that killed Terry in December 2010, was arrested Wednesday at a ranch on the border of Sinaloa and Chihuahua, Fox News reported, citing US and Mexican government sources.

The US Marshals, Border Patrol, and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reportedly took part in the operation alongside Mexican law enforcement. Osorio is currently being held in Mexico, and the US government will seek his extradition.

Dubbed ‘Operation Fast and Furious’ after the hit movie franchise, the operation sought to catch senior cartel figures by letting straw buyers of US weapons walk and be tracked. However, the government lost track of 1,400 out of 2,000 guns sold under the program.

A 471-page congressional report, published in 2012, concluded that the program posed a “significant danger to public safety” and was

plagued by a “pattern of serious failures” and “a series of misguided strategies, tactics, errors in judgment and management failures.”The probe was a major scandal for the Obama administration.

Barack Obama invoked executive privilege for the first time in his presidency, while his attorney general, Eric Holder, was found in contempt of Congress – the first time for a sitting Cabinet official in history – when he refused to hand over internal DOJ documents about the program under subpoena.

Several high-ranking ATF and DOJ officials resigned following the report.

Weapons related to the program were implicated in at least 150 deaths of Mexican civilians, according to Humberto Benítez Treviño, member of the Chamber of Deputies and former Mexican attorney general.

Four other members of the cartel ‘rip crew’ have already been convicted.

Manuel Osorio-Arellanes pleaded guilty to Terry’s murder in 2014 and was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. Ivan SotoBarraza and Jesus Sanchez-

Meza were convicted after a jury trial in October 2015, and sentenced to life in prison.

Rosario Rafael BurboaAlvarez was sentenced to 27 years as part of a plea deal.

The last remaining member of the group, Jesus Rosario FavelaAstorga, remains at large.

- As members of Congress return home for their spring recess, they’re starting to hear from seniors in their districts who oppose any attempt to revive the Republican plan to repeal Obamacare.

The American Health Care Act was withdrawn at the end of March when it couldn’t get enough votes, but negotiations are under way to attract the support of the conservative Freedom Caucus. Blanca Castro, advocacy manager with AARP California, said that could mean gutting protections for people with pre-existing conditions. She said volunteers are fanning out in each of California’s 53 congressional districts to make their point.

“They’re either scheduling meetings or attending local events that local members of Congress may be hosting,”

she said, “and urging not bringing up a repeal of the Affordable Care Act unless there is a replacement that will keep people with preexisting conditions covered.”

AHCA supporters say it would free people from the government mandate to get insurance, lift burdensome regulations and encourage more competition among insurers.

However, a recent study showed 2.6 million Californians between ages 50 and 64 have pre-existing medical conditions and would be at risk of being dropped from their insurance or priced out of the market if the AHCA or an equivalent passes.

Castro said the first Republican proposal also contained a provision allowing insurance companies to charge seniors a lot more in premiums than younger customers.

By Desert Star Staff PORT ORFORD, Ore. -- Oregonians will join protesters across the nation on Saturday in a Tax March, calling on President Trump to release his tax returns.

The marches and rallies

will also highlight Trump’s proposed budget; an outline of how Americans’ tax dollars could be spent in 2018.

Among the cities taking part in the protest is Port Orford, a small outpost on Oregon’s southern coast.

The unassuming town with a population of a little more than 1,000 has been embroiled in national politics since the 2016 election. But Paulianne Balch-Rancourt, a citizen organizer with Action Port Orford, said people in

town have been active in local politics for a long time, and she thinks she knows why.

“Standing for our principles,” Balch-Rancourt said. “It’s not enough to just complain to our friends and like-minded people.

It’s important to represent our principles in action.”

Trump is the first president in 40 years to refuse to release his tax returns to the public. He has said he won’t release his returns while they’re being audited.

While the biggest march is expected to be in Washington, D.C., local marches are scheduled to take place across Oregon, including in Bend, Eugene, Grants Pass and Coos Bay. In January, the Women’s March in Port Orford drew around 300 people from the town and surrounding area.

Since the election, protesters on the southern coast have been working with Indivisible, the dispersed activist network

organizing against the Trump administration in cities across the country, which also has been involved in organizing tax marches.

Balch-Rancourt said the message of the march is simple: Trump should be held accountable for his taxes.

“We believe that you should show your taxes to the American people because you work for us now, you’re not just a private businessman,” she said. “And then, secondarily, Congress, why aren’t you doing something about this?”

The Tax March website says the president should “commit to a fair tax system for the American people” and that it’s important for Americans to know if Trump is hiding any conflicts of interest in his taxes.

The march will take place on April 15, typically the day taxes are due. This year the deadline for taxes is Tuesday, April 18.

Niki de Saint Phalle’s Queen Califia’s Magical Circle Shines

By Pamela Price There’s a marvelous opportunity to view a rare public art installation, Queen Califia’s Magic Circle, a sculpture garden in Escondido, CA that is the final international project and mosaic fantasy of Niki de Saint Phalle, a French artist who spent her last years in La Jolla. The 12-acre natural habitat is located within the Iris Sankey Arborertum in Kit Carson Park on land donated by the City of Escondido and opened in October 2003. The installation is surrounded by an undulating mosaic circular wall of variously connected

Photo by Sue Townsley serpents measuring 400 feet in length. The serpents vary in height from 4 to 9 feet, each studded with variously themed and colored mosaics carefully placed by hand.

This “snake wall” opens to a maze of white and black mirrored tiles. You are now surrounded by nine free standing sculptures, which bedazzle in mosaic splendor of every size, color and theme, with an impact that is “overwhelming,” said visitor Sue Townsley. The gorgeous patterns emerge a surreal feeling which suddenly recedes when you look up

and set sight on Queen Califia standing on the back of a five-legged eagle seemingly holding court in the middle of the garden. The symbols and forms are inspired by Native American, Mexican and PreColumbian art mingled with the artists’s sumptuous imagery and boundless creativity.

This enchanting, entertaining and dramatic installation is already a cultural landmark recognized for celebrating stories and symbols from California’s historic past.

It is hard to believe this mosaic miracle is a mere 120 feet in diameter. Every inch is

studded with individually, hand cut glass, ceramic and stone revealing more than meets the eye such as signatures and handprints of the artist’s team and family members. The eight totem figures look out to native trees and plantings from White Sage to Brush Poppy.

The Park entrance is five minutes from, I-15 via the Rancho Parkway exit at the corner of Bear Valley Parkway and Mary Lane. The exhibit is open for the public, free of charge, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9 AM to noon weather permitting.

On the “Second Saturday”

of each month there are docents on site providing curious visitors with answers about the artist and how Nikki de Saint Phalle made ‘art history’ with this mythical masterpiece of mosaic art.
