The hospital pulled out all the stops to celebrate that anyone 16 and older can get Riverside County’s COVID vaccine. “It’s a historic moment. It’s no longer grandpa and grandma or just mom and dad now it’s everybody, it’s the whole family,” says Jackson.
“What a relief; we’re welcoming and encouraging everyone to get vaccinated,” says Davalyn Tidwell, RUHS director of pharmacy. This makes a million more people eligible, including me. This day means I’m a step closer to being with my family. The wait is finally over for Rosa Velasquez and her niece Jasmin Jimenez. This was an emotional day for them too. “It’s really bittersweet,” says Velasquez. The virus has taken so much from their family. “Someone in the family passed away … my grandma,” says Jimenez as

Sunnylands extends its condolences to the royal family By Desert Star Staff RANCHO MIRAGE, CA – The trustees, president, and staff of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands extend their deepest condolences to the royal family and the United Kingdom citizens on the death of Prince Philip. Ambassador and Mrs. Annenberg created a lasting friendship with Prince Philip and the British royal family throughout a lifetime. Their first meeting was in London when Walter Annenberg was appointed the U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s under President Nixon. The arrangement proved to be a success in political and personal relations. In 1983, the Annenbergs invited Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Philip to visit Sunnylands
while the royal couple was on their 10-day tour of California. It was one of the rare occasions that the royal couple visited a private home. The event displayed the strong friendship between the two couples. During the visit to Sunnylands, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip attended a luncheon held in their honor. Ambassador and Mrs. Annenberg greeted them with a guest list that included former President Gerald Ford and top-level diplomats. They gathered in the Room of Memories surrounded by the legacy of the Annenbergs, including many of the photos and memorabilia from London. Prince Philip signed the guest book simply, “Philip,” showcasing a casual side of the Duke of Edinburgh

Launch Your Boat into a New Season W FAMILY FEATURES
hether you’re racing against the waves or quietly floating with a pole in hand, a day on the water is hard to beat. However, before you can enjoy the excitement of a new season, there are several steps you need to take to make sure your boat is ready for the ride.
System Check
Your boat’s fuel and electric systems need an experienced eye to determine potential problems. Cracked or damaged hoses and connections need to be replaced, and all fittings and clamps should be checked to ensure they’re tight and secure. Test exhaust and ventilation systems, and replace worn or lose belts and cables, giving special attention to the steering and throttle cables. If you didn’t change the oil and filter before putting your boat in storage, do so before the season begins. Also be sure to check oil, power steering fluid and coolant levels as well as running lights and emergency features such as horns.
Battery Function
A reliable power source is essential for powering your trolling motor and operating accessories like fish finders when your engine isn’t running. You’ll need to test your battery before heading out on the water. If it’s time for a replacement, look for a powerful and cost-efficient option like Interstate Batteries’ Enhanced Flooded Deep-Cycle Marine Battery. The battery features a durable design with extended battery life and includes a two-year, free replacement warranty.
Visual Inspection
After several months in storage, it’s a good idea to give your boat a thorough inspection so you can identify any holes, cracks or dings that may impact its performance or safety. Scan the hull closely to for any abnormalities and check the propeller, as even minor dings and scratches can affect its operation.

Careful Cleaning
Depending on the security of your storage space and how you covered your boat, you may not have much heavy cleaning to do. However, it’s a good idea to start the season fresh by giving everything a thorough wipe down. This can help illuminate any problems you may have overlooked during your visual inspection. In addition, using UV protectant on exposed surfaces can help prevent damage such as cracks and fading caused by harsh sunlight.
Finding the Best Battery for Your Boat No matter how you spend your time on the water, a durable and reliable battery is a must. Learn what kind of battery is best for your boating needs from the experts at Interstate Batteries: Starting: Whether you’re sailing the ocean or ripping it up in a motorboat, starting batteries are built to withstand most marine conditions.
Safety Supplies
Deep-Cycle: These batteries are the most popular line of marine batteries and offer strong, reliable power. This type of battery is used to start your trolling motor and power other accessories like fish finders whether your engine is running or not.
Before you hitch the trailer, take inventory of your onboard safety supplies. Be sure your life jackets are in good condition and that you have options to appropriately fit all passengers. Check fire extinguishers to ensure they’re in good working order and test the carbon monoxide detector (or add one if there’s not already a detector installed). Also scan your safety kit; update any expired items and replenish your supply of bandages or other items that may be running low.
Dual-Purpose: Originally developed for military tanks and submarines, this type of battery has the staying power of a deep-cycle battery coupled with high-cranking performance. Powersport: When you’re trying to catch every wave, the last thing you want is a weak battery. These top-quality batteries are built to withstand the most rugged conditions on the water.

Will your Retirement Plan be enough after inflation?
By Janice Gough Even though you may have worked to age 65 and are now accessing your Social Security and a pension plan, you may be finding it necessary to make additional changes in your life to sustain lifetime income. The part of the equation that changes the game plan is inflation. With the cost of inflation at more than 3 percent annually, we must look at all resources to help us stay in the black. Strategies may be to reduce expenses, delay retirement, create income from other assets, work part-time, etc.

When we are building assets, inflation is not a big concern. Your income may increase alongside inflation at the same pace. Once you begin the distribution phase of investments, inflation becomes a huge concern and may require you to take a more significant portion of your income. This will drain your bucket of money faster, which could cause you to outlive your money. Many clients are using one objective to roll over their IRA or qualified account now to a Roth IRA. Pay taxes on your savings now while taxes are lower. Take it back after five years, tax-Free. If you have investments in the risk market, you may experience reverse dollarcost averaging for which you are taking income. When the market drops, you must liquidate more shares to receive the same income. This is the reason most retirees prefer fixed guaranteed income options. Before making mistakes by ignoring the inflation problem, you must discuss this with your advisor so they can help you re-focus on your plan. By not making timely decisions, the remedies just become harder. The first decision would be to make sure your retirement account withdrawals will keep the income bucket sustainable for your lifetime. Next, eliminate
as many expenses as possible, and now you are ready to look at other changes if needed. Many people today have not had to live on a weekly budget. However, this is just what is needed. Once you have covered all fixed expenses, you know precisely what spendable income is left. Planning how you will spend it ahead of time will help you feel good about your purchases and keep you within the budget. Changing patterns of behavior may be necessary. You may have to face your demon of compulsive spending or unplanned purchases. You may even have saved money in ways you did not previously,
but whatever changes must be made, you are better off than risking running out of income. Staying out of future debt will bring more happiness. If your purchases help produce more income, you have a reason for this type of spending. Many academics and financial experts claim that equities traditionally beat inflation. This is mostly untrue. The adverse sequence of returns and negative inflation sequence is cumulative. Thus your savings may be depleted quickly, not leaving you with enough assets to recover. “Aft casting” is using the actual performance of historical data to project how investments would have

State Supreme Court, which ruled that, so long as the board conducted reasonable investigation, courts would give boards “judicial deference” and support the board’s discretion on ordinary maintenance decisions. That landmark HOA law ruling can be found at 21 California Reports 249 (1999). HOROSCOPES ARIES
It’s a very potent time for Aries, a time for reinvention, for new ways of expression and how you present yourself. You’re busy, full of life, enthusiasm (filled with God), confident of your upward mobility and success. You strive to reveal your authentic self, know impulses lead sometimes to difficulties and disharmony, yet you go ahead anyway. It’s a brave new world out there, Aries. You are the brave one.
TAURUS It’s important you become aware of others’ needs, important to listen deeply to their communication, seeking in their words the feelings being expressed. Not until we feel deeply listened to can we then sense understanding within ourselves. Within you there’s Soul searching, a seeking of inner comfort and peace. When we deeply hear others, that inner peace extends to ourselves as well.
GEMINI It’s a time to make contact (contact releases Love, Gemini’s Soul purpose), network (too-used a word these days), enter, create or extend yourself into a group, reach out to others. Only within the group of like-minded others, servers, will your awareness be heightened, goals revealed, and strengths be projected and nurtured. You then do the

CANCER Let’s ask ourselves what elements of our personality we project into the world. Let’s consider if we act professionally, with Right Relations and Goodwill in all areas of life. And if we are mastering any particular discipline at this time. Responsibilities in and for the world summon you. Hopefully you’re working in a group and can share tasks. If not gather a group and give it your leadership direction.
LEO You want to grow and expand beyond everyday life’s experiences. You want to explore, wander, journey toward new projects and activities. You want your spirit to feel adventure, your imagination to be unfettered and unobstructed. You are renewed philosophically by the hope all of this freedom and creativity incurs. You remove the blindfolds from your eyes and justice and beauty are revealed.
VIRGO Perhaps you’re observing others more keenly, seeking to know how others make decisions, live their lives, what priorities they choose. This observation is important. It’s the first step to understanding another’s emotional and psychological make-up. Observing
in this way allows you to see with accuracy, kindness, clarity and later compassion. Cultivate ahimsa (harmlessness) in thoughts, words and deeds.
LIBRA Each month around the new moon it’s good for all relationships to re-define their purpose along with partnership rules about sharing. Notice if among intimates there’s a need for extra attention and care. Meeting that need allows for all to be nurtured and strengthened. It’s good for Libra to ask themselves these questions. “Am I graceful, gracious, forgiving and supportive in relationships? If yes, how? If not, why?” It’s good to consider each day as feast days of mercy.
SCORPIO It’s time in your daily life that “all things new” be initiated. This includes daily regimes, choice of foods, diet, exercise, new agendas, plans, schedules, times of rest and the tending to everyday matters. The new and different is needed now. It’s time for efficiency, organization, detailed order, analysis and critical thinking. All these highlight your desires, aspirations and need for clarity of action and purpose... steps toward triumphant mastery.

You’re either romantically inclined or passionately creative or both at the same time. What you need is nothing serious right now, though Saturn may be making you feel deeply serious. However, what’s needed is fun-filled endeavors, playful encounters and a bit of celebration that’s filled with pleasure and other people’s approval of all that you do, are, and will be. You impact the world. A sort of radiance surrounds you. Golden hued.
CAPRICORN Observe all feelings, reflect upon them, write about them, concentrating on understanding them. There’s a need for safety and security somewhere in the family. In what ways would you offer safety and security? Do you need it now, too? This is an important question to answer at this time. Perhaps you will undertake a circuitous journey before you’re able to understand where this location is. Unemployment Claims in California Are 84.18% Lower Than Last Year
By Desert Star Staff California is struggling to recover from new unemployment claims, with last week’s claims higher than at the start of 2020, according to WalletHub’s updated rankings for the States Whose Unemployment Claims Are Recovering the Quickest.
4
Key Stats:
DesertSTAR
• Weekly unemployment claims in California increased by 301.27% compared to the same week in 2019. This was the 20th biggest increase in the U.S. • Weekly unemployment claims in California increased by 295.88% compared to the start of 2020. This
was the 13th biggest increase in the U.S. • Weekly unemployment claims in California decreased by 84.18% compared to the same week last year. This was the 15th smallest decrease in the U.S. Q&A: Do you expect companies April 14, 2021
to require getting the COVID-19 vaccine as a condition for employment? “It is likely that some companies will require getting the COVID-19 vaccine as a condition for employment, with obvious exemptions for people who are medically unable to receive it,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst. “Companies should be able to have a COVID-19 vaccine requirement because they need to do everything in their power to keep their workers and customers safe. In addition, the more companies that require employees to get a vaccine, the faster we will be able to achieve a full reopening.” How might a state’s efficiency at administering the COVID-19 vaccine affect unemployment? “States that are able to more efficiently vaccinate their residents will likely see better job growth than states
that are less efficient. The more a state vaccinates, the safer conditions in that state will become and the sooner businesses will be able to fully reopen and have the resources to expand hiring,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst. “Currently, some places are far more efficient than others. For example, New Hampshire has used 90% of its vaccine supply, while Alabama has only used 61%.”
How has unemployment in California recovered? “California’s unemployment claims have experienced the 18th slowest recovery in the U.S. For the week of March 29, California had 145,367 new unemployment claims, an 86% decrease from the peak during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst. Healing Veterans and Helping the Environment Go Hand-in-Hand
By Desert Star Staff What does Earth Day have to do with veterans suffering from psychological trauma brought about by their combat experience? A lot, actually. That is because one organization, Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets), is busy delivering thousands of arts-and-crafts therapy kits to veterans each month, and most kits are made largely from recycled materials. The kits provide an important therapeutic benefit for veterans and active-duty military recovering from wounds, injuries and the long-term psychological effects of warfare, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Heal Vets kits include leatherwork, models, woodwork, jewelry, painting, needlecrafts, poster art, scrapbooks and more, and are created from materials that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Heal Vets has been doing this work for 50 years, and commitment to environmental sustainability has become an important and growing part of its mission. “Over the last five years,
we have recycled almost one million pounds of materials,” says Joe McClain, retired Navy captain and CEO of Heal Vets. “By upcycling, we responsibly utilize numerous materials, mostly textiles, one of the biggest contributors to landfill waste in the US.” Indeed, since 2017, Heal Vets has worked with partner organizations to repurpose the extraordinary amounts of potential landfill waste, including: • 300,000 pounds of leather from airplane seats. Southwest Airlines and Arise Foundation have donated leather from airplane seats since 2018. These materials are used to make wallets, footballs, and components for moccasins, such as liners and insoles. • 55,216 pounds of tanned deer skins. The Elks, a partner since 2002, donates tanned deer skins from Elks Lodge members around the country that are used to make moccasins, wheelchair gloves, dreamcatchers, pouches and more. • 454,500 pounds of upholstery. Since 2017, La Z Boy has donated upholstery
Courtesy of Paris Kissel, Help Heal Veterans fabric that Heal Vets uses in kits to make messenger bags, oven mitts, bowl cozies and more. • 112,416 pounds of cabinets. Since 2019, American Woodmark has donated cabinets, which have been repurposed for wood kits to make items like boxes and birdhouses. • 40,000 pounds of automobile seats. Since 2019, Magna has donated auto seats
used to make purse kits. Heal Vets is seeking new partners for its dual mission of helping veterans heal and contributing to a sustainable economy. Businesses can donate materials that reduce their environmental impact and support the recovery of veterans who have served their country and need to recover fully from the visible and invisible wounds of war. To learn more about
the power of craft therapy and the sustainability efforts of Heal Vets, visit healvets.org. “Earth Day has taken on a new meaning for us because it relates directly to our mission,” says McClain. “To us, sustainability means ensuring both the long-term existence of our natural resources and the well-being of the veterans we serve.” StatePoint

“Hemingway”
The Man. The Myth. The Legend. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ACTA) Member Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) Ernest Hemingway, the American novelist and author, became a giant of American 20thcentury literature. His style was new in the early1920ss. It was fresh, and it was being embraced by readers. He loved in his later years being called “Papa” by his friends and admirers which were legion. But his admirers never knew of the ghosts and demons of his past that plagued him all his life. “Hemingway”, the film, epitomized the romantic idea and notions for a generation of young American writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, John Dos Passos, T. S. Eliot, and Edith Wharton, among others that were key in leaving the legacy of “the great war of 1914 to 18” to the dust bin of history. There is no glory or service in war. Only death and destruction was Hemingway’s cynical observation. Yet he served honorably and bravely in both World Wars, receiving medals for his bravery and wounds received under fire,
thus endearing him to men young and old worldwide. His three most successful novels came from war settings based mainly on his own life experiences: “The Sun Also Rises,” “A Farewell to Arms,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Hemingway was an enigma wrapped in a mystery that could always get away with things that ordinary people could or word never do. He relished his celebrity status to the hilt, and he was a partygoing charmer when he needed to be. , He was envied by men and was desired by women from afar. In his twenties, he had matinee idol looks and worked them to his advantage. These ‘young turks’ of writing in the early twenties discovered “the lost generation “and made decisions in their writing to revitalizing the style and subject matter of their current society into the new and exciting ‘roaring twenties’ Hemingway influenced a generation of writers who were eager to leave the literature of the early 20th century behind. They much preferred to tell their stories that appealed to mid- 20th century America, placing them in the vanguard of America’s emerging writer population. (Many who read this essay/review, perhaps,

Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Boston. are too young to remember this early to mid 20thcentury golden period of literature and films in America. Fortunately, however, I am not one of them). The brilliant American documentarists Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, America’s foremost literary and film historians, have written and produced a monumental sixhour film chronical on the life and time of Ernest Hemingway that highlights and celebrates his tragic life warts and all. They have created this insightful, riveting film epic into three episodes of two hours each; that is to be viewed on three successive night on PBS. I watched all three
episodes April 5 thru 7. Genius in any form is always revealing, always engaging, and can, at times, be, dare I say it … be boring or even cruel. Hemingway was a complicated, flawed, four times married man who had a penchant for younger women (the youngest of his four wives was just 18), and he could be difficult to be around when he dipped into his ‘dark-nightof-the-soul periods. He was an inveterate alcoholic with medical issues that went along with his disciplined writing genius. He possessed a lust for life that endeared him to his many “he-man” image-driven acolytes everywhere. And his fans adored him, however, Celebrity
Scammers Target Seniors by Posing as Clergy
By Eric Galatas AARP’s Fraud Watch Network is warning Wyoming residents about a new take on an age-old scam targeting older Americans across the country. Seth Boffeli, an advisor for the AARP Fraud Watch Network, said criminals are taking advantage of people’s sense of charity during the pandemic’s economic fallout. Posing as pastors, priests,
rabbis and imams, scammers send texts or emails to congregants with a sob story - a cancer patient strapped for cash, or someone whose pipes burst and can’t afford repairs - and ask victims to help out by purchasing gift cards. “It’s a standard imposter scam,” Boffeli explained. “They’re impersonating someone who is a religious or a faith leader, somebody that
you already know and trust.” Boffeli said there’s always an excuse as to why the religious leader can’t help at that moment: They are out of town or otherwise unable to pick up the actual gift card. Once a victim hands over the gift card number and PIN, their money is virtually impossible to recover. Boffeli emphasized it’s important to report incidents by calling the Fraud Network’s helpline toll-free at 877-908-3360.
Preying on the prayerful has become a growing nuisance during the pandemic. Clergy scams used to be reported to the network once or twice a month, but Boffeli said that there had been five or six reports a week across multiple states since the global health crisis. “And what we see when we look across the country is most of these scams start in one or two states and slowly but surely make their way across the country,” Boffeli

can become a two-edged sword at times, as Geoffrey C. Ward’s inspired script attests. Ward is an award-winning writer who, with Burns and Novick, appears to do his best work when Ken and Lynn are together in this very created triumvirate. “Hemingway,” along with “The Civil War” and “Baseball,” are three of Ward’s best efforts in a string of wonderful and insightfully written scripts. noted. “So this is something really that everybody should be on the lookout for.” Boffeli noted gift cards had become the currency of choice for scammers, in part because churches routinely collect gift cards at Thanksgiving and other holidays for struggling families. Boffeli stressed the best way to protect yourself is not to engage if you receive a text or email. You also can call your place of worship and let them know someone is posing as clergy, so the rest of the congregation can be warned. AARP Fraud: https://www. aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/

Raising Big Dreamers Ways to have career conversations with kids
By Desert Star Staff Pre-pandemic, Take Your Child to Work Day was an opportunity for children to peek behind the mysterious veil of “work” – to see what their parents do all day and begin to dream about the careers they might like to pursue when they grow up. For some parents, every day might feel like Take Your Child to Work Day. For others, health and safety concerns might make it impossible to bring children to their workplaces. That doesn’t mean it’s any less important to take some time to help your children imagine turning their passions into careers. “Children need exposure to the possibilities that exist so they can envision themselves doing what inspires them in the future,” said Content Architect Rashelle Chase from KinderCare Learning Centers’ education team. “Learning about different career options also helps children learn about how the world works and the different types of roles and systems that are in place to help society function.” Consider these tips from
the experts at KinderCare to help parents infuse some of the Take Your Child to Work Day spirit into everyday life. Expose your children to a variety of career options. Young children tend to think of careers in terms of the kinds of jobs they see adults doing, like doctors, firefighters and teachers. Help your children discover careers that are new to them. Talk about essential workers and why they are depended on so heavily. Share details about the work your immediate and extended family members do – perhaps you could arrange a virtual call so your children can see a family member at work. Point out other kinds of workers as your child encounters them, whether that’s during a walk around the neighborhood or while reading a book. Help your children imagine turning their passions into careers. Not every block builder turns into an architect. Some go into construction, some into engineering and some pursue other careers entirely. When children express an interest in a specific career or type of work, help them think about the
kinds of skills they could work on now to help turn that dream into a reality. Help your children make connections between the things they like to do now and the kinds of careers that could lead to. Maybe there’s an activity or volunteer experience your children could do, or a club they could join, that would help nurture that passion and expand their skillset. Break career stereotypes. Point out diverse people doing jobs as you see them in the community or in books or media – like female firefighters,
Tips to Pay for College This Fall
By Desert Star Staff What does paying for college during life’s “new normal” and current economic climate look like? A new survey highlights parent plans and concerns regarding the upcoming 2021-2022 school year. The College Ave Student Loans survey of parents of undergraduate students conducted by Barnes & Noble College Insights found that of those planning to help their child pay for college, 52% said the pandemic will make it more difficult to pay this fall and 45% said it’s changed how they plan to pay, with 51% using more savings, 45% borrowing more in student loans, and www.desertstarweekly.com
27% taking out a parent loan. Despite new challenges, the commitment to higher education remains steadfast: 93% of families agree obtaining a college degree is more important than ever. “The pandemic has presented new obstacles, yet as this survey highlights, families are incredibly resilient and determined to help their child obtain a higher education,” says Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer of College Ave Student Loans. If higher education costs are on the horizon for you, the survey results suggest keeping these tips in mind: • Anticipate spending
more. Parents across the board reported college expenses being more than they expected, including college tuition and fees (81%), room and board/rent and food (77%), school activities and fees (61%) and books and supplies (57%). Plan and budget accordingly. • Plan to use multiple sources. While 78% of parents put money aside for their child’s education, only 17% said savings could cover the full cost. Be prepared to look at a variety of funding sources. • Maximize financial aid. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) every year your child attends college. This April 14, 2021
male teachers or biracial female vice presidents – and talk about the diverse viewpoints and experiences each person can bring to his or her career. Be active about squashing gender stereotypes whenever you see or hear them. Encourage your children to pursue their ambitions and let them know you believe in them and their ability to succeed in whatever career they want. Help your child to see “work” and “jobs” as positive things, especially after rough days. Be honest about the
struggles and successes you have in your own career. Celebrate your successes and talk with your children about how you problem-solve or persevere through tough times. Model coping skills your children can apply to their own “job” – school. It’s important for children to understand one can still find fulfillment and passion in a career even if there are tough moments. important form is the gateway to scholarships, grants, workstudy and federal student loans. If your financial situation has substantially changed since last year, reach out to your school’s financial aid office for help and resources. • Search for scholarships. Grants and scholarships were the top method used to pay for college, ahead of parent savings and income. One easy one to consider is the $1,000 monthly scholarship sweepstakes from College Ave. • Tune up your credit. Of those surveyed, 53% plan to use student loans and 26% plan to use parent loans. Get a copy of your credit report and review your credit score, particularly if you think you may need private student loans in addition to federal. Reach out to the credit reporting agency to address any errors. Credit history and credit score will impact whether you’re approved for a private student loan, as well as the interest rate. • Encourage your child to contribute. Sixty-nine percent of parents expect
their child to help chip in and 52% expect their child to find a job while in college. • Balance other financial commitments. When it comes to balancing other commitments, you can take comfort that you’re not alone. Fifty-eight percent of parents are stressed about balancing their retirement and paying for college. Look at your balance of retirement savings, obligations, and goals to give you a clearer picture on where you stand and what you can afford to contribute towards college. A majority of families surveyed wish more planning resources existed. If that describes you, check out the savings strategies and insights from college and personal finance experts available at collegeave.com. While funding the 20212022 school year may be more difficult than you previously anticipated, having a solid plan and knowing all your options can help ensure a college education remains within reach. Youth Advocates Push MD Bill to Divert Kids from Jail By Diane Bernard ANNAPOLIS, Md. - As many states consider policing reforms, juvenile-justice groups in Maryland are pushing lawmakers to pass a bill to give police officers an alternate approach to arresting young people. House Bill 1187 would divert kids under age 13 from entering the criminal justice system, allowing officers not to charge them with misdemeanor or nonviolent felony crimes. Betsy Tolentino - assistant secretary of community operations at the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services - said instead, young people and their families would be redirected to communitybased programs to treat any behavioral problems. She said diversion helps lower the chance of kids being arrested again. “For the young people that we can just sort of addressing them the minute they come

to our attention,” said Tolentino, “with maybe some behavioral health services, drug treatment - and keep them from having to go through that formal process. Then we may stop the cycle of offending right away and provide the supports they need to be successful in their communities.” The Governor’s Juvenile Justice Reform Council recommended House Bill 1187 in its final report. The bill passed the Maryland House in a 95-to-41 vote and is now in the state Senate. Tolentino said the Reform Council included public defenders, folks from Juvenile Services, and national experts in the criminal justice system. After researching juvenile behavior, she noted they concluded that the harm of restrictive detention outweighs any benefits for low-level offenses. “So, for those young
people who may be engaged in misdemeanor-type offenses, there are lots of other things we can do in the community,” said Tolentino. “We can use electronic monitoring; we can do pretrial supervision or other interventions that April 14, 2021
keep the young person and the community safe.” Research shows that processing a young person through the formal court system before age 18 can have devastating long-term consequences, including
less education and fewer employment opportunities. Citation: Maryland House Bill 1187 would give police the option of diverting young juvenile offenders away from the criminal justice system. www.desertstarweekly.com

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your

Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www.STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 84443 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid; by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code; so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Another video shows a liquor store being looted, with bottles smashed all over the floor. In one video posted by photojournalist Rebecca Brannon, a female looter could be heard shouting, “I need this! I need this!” as she roamed around an auto store. In contrast, in a separate clip, a woman in a car could be
heard telling another person in a looted Family Dollar, “When I beep this horn, that means to come out.” While cars could be seen queuing up as usual at a Taco Bell in one video, the McDonald’s across the street didn’t fare quite so well, having also been smashed up and looted. The looting started after 20-year-old black Minnesotan Daunte Wright was shot and killed by police during a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon. The halt was reportedly made

‘Are we at war?’ By Desert Star Staff Tensions have been running high in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, after police shot a black man during a traffic stop, reportedly over an air freshener. The incident has sparked protests that descended into violence. Several hundred people flocked to the Brooklyn Center PD, protesting the death of Daunte Wright, 20, who was shot by police during what appeared to be a routine traffic stop on Sunday afternoon. Wright’s mother told the media at the scene that her son called her as he was being pulled over and said that it was because of an air freshener dangling from his rearview mirror. All he did was have air fresheners in the car, and they told him to get out of the vehicle,” Katied Wright said. It’s illegal for drivers to hang items from the rearview mirror that may obstruct the view of the road. According to police, the officers who stopped Wright’s car “determined that the vehicle’s driver had an outstanding warrant” and sought to take him into
custody. It’s unclear what transpired next, with police saying that Wright “re-entered the vehicle,” which prompted one of the officers to open fire. Wright then drove “several blocks before striking another vehicle” and was pronounced dead at the scene. Simultaneously, a woman in the passenger seat was injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Daunte’s mother said her son was heading to a car wash when he was pulled over. She also accused police of leaving her son’s body lying at the scene for hours. Protests against the police’s handling of the incident were initially peaceful but quickly spiraled into violence. Protesters reportedly hurled rocks at officers and were filmed jumping on police cars and smashing the windows. Masked looters broke into and robbed dozens of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota stores, including GameStop, Foot Locker and Family Dollar; after protests over the police shooting, a black man spiraled into violence.
due to air fresheners hanging from Wright’s rearview mirror – which is regarded by law as an illegal obstruction. Police claimed Wright then tried to drive away after realizing there was a warrant out for his arrest during the stop. Brooklyn Center descended into chaos following the shooting, with protesters attacking and jumping on police cruisers as law enforcement used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse riots.
