Is Everything Broken? Earth has a ‘leaky core’ resulting in iron-rich lava eruptions, researchers find By Desert Star Staff Amid growing anxiety over the coronavirus pandemic, it would be nice if we could at least rely upon the solidity of the Earth. Think again, says a new study, which found the
inner layer of our planet is discharging metal material. The Earth’s molten core may be leaking iron, according to scientists at the University of California, Davis. The study concluded that
a huge drop in temperature from our planet’s liquid iron core to the outer rocky mantle pulls heavier iron isotopes out towards the Earth’s surface, while lighter iron isotopes remain within the core.
The discovery could serve as a breakthrough in how we understand the onion-like layers below the soil, and particularly core-mantle interaction. The researchers’ findings
could also potentially explain why there are more heavy iron isotopes in mantle rocks, as opposed to other materials that make up the Earth’s layers — revealing that the core has been oozing heavy metal for quite some time. Continues on Page 5
JFS Desert Delivers Passover Meals To Local Holocaust Survivors
By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA - Friday, April 10, 2020… Passover is the most ancient of all Jewish festivals. It is a national festival, an agricultural festival, and a family festival that is celebrated every spring for seven days in Israel (eight days elsewhere). Passover commemorated the Exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago. It marks the birth of the Jewish nation following the liberation from foreign domination and oppression. This liberation led to national and religious independence. JFS typically hosts a communal Café Europa gathering to celebrate
Passover with the Valley’s local Holocaust survivors. Café Europa is a social club inviting Survivors to meet regularly to build supportive relationships and participate in social and educational activities, including trips, holiday celebrations, and entertainment. This year, JFS had to think outside the box due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the Valley’s Survivors live alone, and the prospect of them having family and friends to enjoy the holiday with does not meet the social distancing/ shelter-at-home criteria. We thought, if we can at minimum

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month
By Madeline Zuckerman Although it has been almost 50 years since the first federal legislation aimed at curtailing Child Abuse was passed, it remains a devastating problem in America. Every ten seconds in the United States, a case of child abuse is reported. In 1983, President Reagan declared April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. During April and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to increase awareness and provide education and support to families through resources and strategies to prevent child abuse and neglect. A year before Congress passed the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, Dr. Donald, and Lois Verleur, who was living in Southern California, took in four young girls who needed a home, and in so doing, created Olive Crest, an organization committed to addressing the individual needs of at-risk youth and their families. Olive Crest today is the recognized leader in the prevention and treatment of child abuse, serving over 3,500 children and families daily throughout California, Nevada, and the Pacific Northwest. And while so many of the individual stories of child abuse and neglect can end in heartbreaking ways, Olive Crest has celebrated a wealth of successful endings, translated into new beginnings, as at-risk children have become hopefilled, productive young adults. Here Are Some of Their Stories . . . Helen grew up in a home where drug addiction reigned supreme, while she and her brother became afterthoughts in their parents’ lives. She found herself often shifted in and out of foster care, and sadly, often separated from her brother. For Helen, whose experience of uncertainty and separation from her brother and family left her undone by trauma, Olive Crest was the answer to her prayers. Once Olive Crest intervened, Helen and her brother were placed together with a loving family who provided

a structured life, for them to succeed and heal. Today, Helen holds an Associate Degree in Child Development and a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership for Christian Ministry. She is married and launching a business selling products that benefit foster children. Then there was Michael. When Michael was born, his mother was a single 18-yearold who struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. Immediately after he was born, she became pregnant again, only to lose her second son to sudden infant death syndrome at the age of 3 months. It was too much for her, and she abandoned her remaining son. As Michael relates, “the police came to our home and found me, at age two, all alone and sitting on the floor with a knife in my hand.” He would then go through a series of possible homes, only to find rejection and loneliness. Michael was on the road to becoming another member of the child welfare system, 60% of whom end up being incarcerated. Finally finding himself in the safety and care of an Olive Crest Residential Home for Teenagers, Michael began to thrive, graduating high school and landing his first two jobs. He then met a mentor, Chris, who believed in him. Chris arranged for Michael to get a job with his family’s business in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Michael wound up opening his Branding and Design business, before becoming a teaching pastor at a local church. When Ruby first entered the system, she was six years old, and the primary caretaker of her two baby sisters, Stephanie and Jessica. Their home had been a vacant house that her parents had broken into. As she describes it, “It was not the kind of place where anyone should live.” Her parents, addicted to drugs and alcohol, saw their children as minor concerns. Ruby slept without sheets or blankets on a mattress on the floor, and often drank sour milk, or her baby sisters’ formula. After finally being removed from their’
home,’ Ruby spent the next few years in and out of seven houses, heading for an adult life of homelessness. 25% of children that age out of the child welfare system end up homeless within the first year of their adult lives. For Ruby and her two sisters, homelessness was a constant threat, until Olive Crest connected with her. Then one day, she overheard her Olive Crest parents discussing the possibility of adopting her. Miraculously, her family later adopted her younger sister, Jessica, with sister Stephanie being taken by another Olive Crest family. These three sisters now see one another monthly as part of the extended Olive Crest family. Homelessness was already a part of Ashley’s life at the age of 14. Initially raised by parents who were addicted to methamphetamines, she had been removed from their care and had spent most of her childhood in and out of the child welfare system. When she was 13, her mother reentered her life, and Ashley’s initial joy turned to the worst kind of betrayal, as her mother turned her daughter into a meth addict. “My mother showed me how to smoke meth. She popped it right in my mouth and lit it, and I was hooked.” Within a year, Ashley was not only addicted to methamphetamine; she was involved with an abusive man
Suicide, overdose, drug-related violence, and human trafficking are the tragic final chapters in the lives of too many children as a result of child abuse and neglect. However, over the last 12 months, Olive Crest has provided over 100,000 Safe Days in Riverside County. Olive Crest works tirelessly to stop child abuse by both treating those suffering from the cycle of violence, and by preventing it via intervention and education strategies. “We have seen a remarkable 54% increase in our services just this past year, and it is critical for us to educate the community to help,” stated Tracy Fitzsimmons, Executive Director who became the father of her of Olive Crest, in the Inland two children. The Miracle Benefits of Life Insurance
By Janice Gough During the Easter season, we think religiously of miracles; however, I offer ideas of the ways life insurance becomes a gift of miracles. Sometimes we forget the many ways it can protect our lives and businesses. Life insurance is a fundamental part of a responsible and reliable financial strategy. While it only takes a little planning for one to protect themselves and their families from future instability, shockingly, almost 50% do not have any life insurance. Some believe a life insurance policy is either too

Since it is an intangible product, people procrastinate in getting it and may leave their families unprotected in the event of an unfortunate tragedy. These are some additional ways life insurance is used and how it can play a miracle in one’s life plan. 1. Replacing Essential Income: As we move through life, we will likely accumulate a range of expenses, from large debts like mortgages and loans -or to medical bills or other emergencies. If one is struggling to pay for these expenses, you may consider withdrawals from your life insurance cash value as a source of additional income. Even if you are still working, life insurance can offer a source of much-needed wealth in unexpected situations. For instance, as people today are living and working longer than previous generations, it’s essential to think about how you will take care of healthcare expenses if there is a longterm illness. There could be a need for child care or money for the care of a relative. By using the tax-free access to your cash value in your life insurance, these expenses can be managed. Another means to access immediate cash can be through policies that offer an added provision called an “accelerated benefit rider,” which can trigger some of the death benefits to be paid out while the insured is still living, under certain circumstances, such as a critical illness. The funds are available to use for any reason. For anyone who has ever accelerated the benefit of life insurance to care for someone and help them survive, you experience

Stocking up On Tainted Tuna?
By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK -- As households try to stock up on shelf-stable foods, a Greenpeace investigation has found potential links between a major brand of tuna, modern slavery and illegal fishing practices. In January, Fong Chun Formosa, or FCF, one of the world’s top tuna traders, acquired Bumble Bee, the largest canned seafood company in North America. According to Andy Shen, senior oceans adviser and U.S. project lead with the Greenpeace global tuna campaign, FCF has failed to address systemic issues in its supply chain, including forced labor and illegal fishing. “This tuna trader has close links to many problematic fishing companies,” Shen said. “Therefore, there’s
an incredibly high risk of tainted tuna entering into our supermarkets and our homes through Bumble Bee tuna.” Bumble Bee Seafoods said third-party auditors monitor its suppliers’ facilities for labor violations, and it remains committed to expanding social accountability to fishing vessels. But Shen noted the Greenpeace investigation
of labor violations aboard tuna fishing vesselsrevealed conditions that meet international definitions of forced labor and human trafficking. “They were subjected to debt bondage, to inhumane working hours, really cruel living conditions,” he said. “Some of the worst cases I’ve ever seen.” He added illegal transfers of tuna between vessels at
sea also allow the co-mingling of legal and illegal catches, possibly allowing tainted fish to enter into the U.S. market. Shen said he hopes the report will encourage Bumble Bee to do more to ensure its products are caught sustainably and workers on the boats are treated humanely. “And consumers can do a lot,” he said. “They can call on Bumble Bee, and on retailers that are selling Bumble Bee canned tuna, to really adopt better policies and practices.”

Coronavirus and Alzheimer’s: What Family Caregivers Need to Know
By Desert Star Staff The COVID-19 pandemic threatens the health of millions in this country and around the world, but the novel coronavirus presents unique challenges for more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and more than 16 million family members and friends serving as their caregivers. “Public health strategies aimed at limiting contact with others are nearly impossible for people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias who rely on family caregivers and others to live their daily lives,” says Beth Kallmyer, vice president, care and support, Alzheimer’s Association. “This reality affects these individuals across all settings, including home, adult day services, residential and assisted living facilities and nursing homes.” To help family caregivers navigate the complex COVID-19 environment, the Alzheimer’s Association is offering additional guidance to families, including: • Foster safe hygiene habits. People living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias may forget to
wash their hands or follow other precautions to ensure safe hygiene. Caregivers are encouraged to be extra vigilant in helping individuals practice safe hygiene. • Monitor sudden or sustained behavior changes. People living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias may not be able to communicate if they are feeling bad or showing early symptoms of illness. Caregivers should monitor family members closely and respond quickly to any signs of distress, discomfort or increased confusion. These signs do not necessarily indicate a serious condition like COVID-19, but it’s important to determine the underlying cause. • Prepare for potential changes in care and support. As public health containment strategies for COVID-19 escalate, families need to anticipate that less help may be available. It’s important for families to anticipate these changes and make plans for filling gaps in caregiving. • Be calm and create a nurturing environment. The current COVID-19 pandemic is creating added anxiety for everyone. Do your best to
remain calm, particularly in your interactions with family members living with dementia. These individuals often take their cues from the people around them. Creating a calm environment will help them feel safe and protected. • Play gatekeeper with outside caregivers and guests. Carefully monitor who is coming into the home to ensure all who enter are healthy. Be proactive in asking outside caregivers and guests about their current health
status and make sure they are not experiencing any early or recent symptoms of illness. • Ask residential care facilities about communication policies. To protect the health of residents, many facilities are restricting access to outside visitors. Ask the facility about alternative communication methods during the crisis, including phone calls, video chats or emails. If your family member is unable to engage in calls or video chats, ask the facility how you can connect
with staff to get health updates. For more information, visit alz.org, the website of the Alzheimer’s Association or call its free 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900. Many primary caregivers are not good about asking for help even as care responsibilities escalate. It’s important for family members and friends to be proactive during the current crisis in asking caregivers how they can help. StatePoint
Grocery Workers Seek Classification as Essential
In states such as Illinois and Maryland, reports have surfaced of grocery store workers dying after contracting COVID-19. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff Grocery workers in Wisconsin remain on the front lines, helping
people stock up during the coronavirus pandemic. But despite showing up to work every day, a trade
group says these workers are doing so without a key recognition from the state. A handful of states,
including neighboring Minnesota, have classified grocery store employees as essential -- a move that paves the way for assistance, such as free child care, during the crisis. Brandon Scholz, president of the Wisconsin Grocers Association, is calling on Wisconsin government to do the same. “The folks in the health care world, and first responders and law enforcement, they’re also very critical to what’s going on right now,” he states. “But this is the time that you do add people from grocery stores in with those folks as well.” Scholz says the classification also would allow stores more access to personal protective equipment. He says store owners are ordering these items from companies that might be charging them too much, for gear that
takes too long to arrive. Scholz says customers are being more mindful of their etiquette as the crisis unfolds. He says some of the hoarding that happened in March has tapered off, but there are some things shoppers still need to keep in mind to keep everyone safe. “Shop alone -- we’ll sanitize the cart for you,” he stresses. “You can sanitize if you want as well. Get your list, buy what you need and go home. And come back in a week. Buy what you need for a week -- don’t buy for a day.” While some stores might be running low on various items, Scholz says there’s still plenty of food to purchase. He says customers might have to adapt to being without a favorite item for a short time, but most of the shortages will not persist.
Nurses Raise Alarm on Lack of Personal Protective Equipment
By Desert Star Staff WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- North Carolina’s nurses are signaling they may soon run out of masks, gloves and other personal protective equipment, known as PPE. The North Carolina Nurses Association says an informal poll found that, of the 354 nurses who responded, around 60% said their facility already has a PPE shortage.

Only 20% said their facility has the supplies it needs, and 21% said they were unsure. Dennis Taylor, an acutecare nurse practitioner in the Winston-Salem area, said a sudden surge in COVID-19 patients could upend the healthcare system. “There is just really widespread concern among nurses that we don’t have all of the appropriate equipment that
we may need to be able to do the screening and the treatment of patients,” Taylor said. As of Sunday, Apr. 12, the state is reporting more than 4,500 people have tested positive for the new coronavirus, and more than 300 are currently hospitalized; 91 people have died. Taylor said the best way communities can help nurses is to obey and support the April 15, 2020
“stay-at-home” and social distancing orders. He added COVID-19 is affecting frontline workers’ mental health. One study published in March found healthcare workers in China experienced high levels of anxiety, depression and insomnia. “Those are all things I think that keep us up at night, is that we know that we want to be there to help, and we don’t
want to the resources to be overwhelmed,” Taylor said. The North Carolina Nurses Association has stated it supports bolstering the nurse workforce by implementing policies to encourage volunteering. The state Board of Nursing also has announced it will temporarily renew the licenses of retired nurses.

Fund Helps Breast Cancer Patients Impacted by COVID-19 Crisis
By Desert Star Staff Rising unemployment, mandatory stay-at-home orders, and an overburdened health care system are causing a perfect storm for breast cancer patients who have concerns or need care, according to the experts at Susan G. Komen. “People who have been impacted by breast cancer or who are concerned that they may have breast cancer need help getting the care they need now more than ever,” says Paula Schneider, CEO of Susan G. Komen. That’s why Komen has established a COVID-19
Action Fund to provide people and organizations an opportunity to support the unique needs of breast cancer patients during this health and economic crisis. New Risks: Breast cancer doesn’t break for a global pandemic. It is estimated that in 2020 there will be more than 279,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. Unfortunately, some of the common therapies used to treat breast cancer, like chemotherapy, can cause immune systems to be compromised both during and for a period after treatment

“The results suggest iron from the core has been leaking into the mantle for billions of years,” said lead author Charles Lesher. For those not particularly
interested in what’s happening 1,800 miles (2,900 km) below the Earth’s surface, the study has another intriguing finding: The leaky core is likely responsible for the high levels of iron deposits found in volcanic eruptions off the
ends, putting patients at higher risk for getting the novel coronavirus disease. How People Can Help: Komen remains committed to doing whatever it takes to save lives by supporting those most vulnerable within the breast cancer community. The Komen COVID-19 Action Fund supports urgent needs among the breast cancer community during this health and economic crisis. Donors to the fund ensure important services continue for those in need, including: • Komen’s Breast Care and Clinical Trials Helpline, which is receiving
record-high call volume • Komen’s Treatment Assistance program, which provides financial assistance to patients going through treatment • Guiding patients through difficult decisions and providing psychosocial support from oncology social workers • Komen’s advocacy for breast cancer patients and their needs among policy makers • Funding lifesaving research and clinical trials to discover new treatments “Whether it’s providing information, finding alternative resources or helping people stay in treatment by providing financial assistance to help remove barriers to care, we are here to help. But we can only be here for patients if we have funds available to deploy in assisting them,” says Schneider. To learn more or donate, visit coronavirus.komen.org. What Patients Should Know: For people looking for support, Komen’s Breast Care Helpline can provide information, social support and help with coping strategies related to anxiety or concerns during these uncertain times. Calls to the helpline are answered by
trained, caring staff members in English or Spanish, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET. The helpline can be reached by phone at 1-877-GO-KOMEN (465-6636), or by email at helpline@komen.org The experts at Komen noted that while they support delaying routine screening during this health crisis for healthy women of average risk who are not displaying warning signs of cancer, they strongly encourage people to know what is normal for them, and to report to their health care provider any changes. The warning signs for breast cancer are not the same for all women. The most common signs are changes to the look or feel of the breast, and a full list of warning signs for breast cancer can be found at komen.org. Contact a doctor if you notice any change in your breast. The COVID-19 pandemic is new, unprecedented and confusing, but for those with breast cancer, there are additional challenges. During this time of uncertainty, no one should feel alone. New resources are helping breast cancer patients connect with the information, care and support they need. StatePoint

How and Why to Keep Kids on a Schedule During School Closures
By Desert Star Staff School closures have forced families nationwide to readjust to the current reality. However, a sense of structure is important for children’s developmental growth. To create a routine for your kids that sticks, consider the following tips: • Just because there is no formal school day doesn’t mean kids should sleep in or stay up late at night. Keep the same bedtimes, wakeup routines and mealtimes you always maintained during a regular school week. Doing so will bookend the mornings and evenings with a sense of normalcy. • Mimic a school day to the best of your ability. Use the distance-learning tools your child’s teachers offer as well as other educational apps and resources to have kids focus on different school subjects. This will help break up the day into little chunks just as would happen in the classroom. Be sure to build in
time for art projects, exercise and music. Most importantly, don’t forget “recess.” If possible, allow children to play in the backyard where they can socially distance from neighbors, or set up an area of your home for playtime. • Evenings are a good time to relax and unwind together. Play board games, watch your children’s favorite movies or even use the many resources available online to enjoy a virtual walking tour of a museum, botanical garden or zoo. This is also a good time to allow children to connect with their friends using video chat or with family members they are not currently able to see in-person. • For many children, screens are their greatest distraction. For this reason, one of the best ways to ensure your children stay focused on the schedule you create for them is by managing their screen time. One easy way to do so with less direct intervention
from you (since you are likely busy yourself!) is by using a screen time monitoring and scheduling tool like the OurPact app. Get started by signing up for a free account and pairing your children’s devices. From there, you will be able to manage devices remotely to create a schedule that keeps kids offline when
they need to be focused on other things. It can also be customized to allow children to visit and use only certain learning sites or apps during particular hours of the day. Because this schedule lives on the children’s devices as well, you’ll be giving them the comfort of a routine. To learn more or download,
How to Stay Healthy While Social Distancing
By Desert Star Staff COVID-19 has the public rethinking how they stay healthy -- both physically and mentally. Even those in good health can start to feel anxious and fearful when the words ‘pandemic’ and ‘social distancing’ are mentioned. But can you stay active and mentally healthy while social distancing? The answer is a resounding yes. While routines have changed, it’s critical that people
keep exercising and eating nutritious meals, since the body is often able to better fight off illnesses when it’s healthy and strong. Taking these steps helps fight off stress, which most people are experiencing right now in one way or another. Here is some advice from Cigna chief nursing officer, Mary Picerno to help stay healthy, both physically and mentally, during this time. • Get Outside: While it’s important to limit physical
interactions, getting outside for a run, walk or bicycle ride is a great way to boost endorphins and enjoy fresh air. Just make sure to maintain six feet between yourself and others. If weather or other reasons limit your ability to go outside, many companies and gyms are offering free online exercises right now. Endorphins have been found to reduce stress, increase feelings of happiness and help fight against depression.
• Get Proper Nutrition: Add fruits and vegetables to your plate for colorful, nutrientrich meals. Vegetables also are a good source of fiber. Eating well will help you feel better and give you energy to keep moving. Now is a great time to try that new recipe or food subscription box! • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help prevent dehydration. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dehydration can cause unclear thinking and mood swings. Not sure how much to drink? Many medical professionals suggest following the 8x8 rule, eight ounces of water eight times a day. • Stay Connected: Just because you can’t be with friends and family in person doesn’t mean you can’t stay in touch. Set up time to connect with video chats, phone calls and emails. Staying connected doesn’t have to be high-tech. Have kids or just a kid at heart? Write encouraging messages on your driveway or in your windows for your neighbors, and postal and delivery workers. • Know Your Options: One

of the best ways to prepare is knowing what to do if you start to show symptoms. Cigna and many other health insurers are now waiving the costs of doctor visits related to a COVID-19 diagnosis as well as the cost of COVID-19 FDA-approved testing. To minimize your exposure, call or email your doctor or a local health system about a telehealth visit to be screened for COVID-19. The provider will then identify what steps you should take next. • Get Support: Talking through concerns and fears can help put them in perspective and make you feel calmer. You may want to reach out for professional support if you’re struggling. Cigna offers many resources and tools, including a 24-hour toll-free help line (1-855-287-8400) to speak with qualified behavior health clinicians, a webinar focused on managing anxiety, fears and concerns, and mindfulness podcasts (available in English and Spanish) focused on improving resiliency and stress management. Lawmakers Block Switch to Mail-In Ballots for AZ Elections
By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX -- Votingrights advocates say partisan politics are blocking Arizona elections officials from allowing all voters in the state to use mail-in ballots in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Some 80% of Arizona voters already cast their ballots by mail, but Republicans in the state Legislature -- who would have to approve a statewide plan -- remain staunchly opposed. Emily Kirkland, executive director with Progress Now Arizona, said these lawmakers seem to be taking their cue from President Donald Trump, who claims mail-in voting is an invitation for voter fraud. “It’s nonsense. Many of the people who are now saying that vote-by-mail is somehow insecure themselves vote by mail,” Kirkland said. “Arizonans have been voting by mail for years. All the Arizona election officials of both parties support this move.” Arizona county recorders,
who are in charge of local elections, say they need a go-ahead from lawmakers in the next couple of weeks in order to prepare for the Aug. 4 primary and Nov. 3 general elections. Many voting rights advocates want to add universal mail-in balloting. But Kirkland said this Vote-By-Mail Plus proposal is designed to preserve in-person options for those who still want them. “Sending every registered voter a mail-in ballot, while also expanding in-person options -- including early voting -- to make sure that we’re able to protect public health and preserve our democracy, even in the midst of this unprecedented crisis,” she said. Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, said she foresees no problems or delays with using mail-in ballots to allow voters to avoid crowds at polling stations. “We have a track record in Arizona with early voting,
Arizonans already have the option to vote by mail. The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted officials to propose extending mail-in ballots to all voters, for both the 2020 primary and general elections. (Darylann/AdobeStock) particularly vote-by-mail -- but also in jurisdictional elections, counties already run those all vote-by-mail,” Hobbs said. Both Kirkland and Hobbs say they plan to continue talking with lawmakers
about the move. The Legislature is scheduled to reconvene this week, but some reports say House and Senate leaders don’t plan to reconsider the matter. Support for this reporting

New Ways to Keep Kids Engaged While Distance-Learning
By Desert Star Staff As learning goes remote, many teachers and families are doing their best to adjust. Luckily, new resources and tools are emerging to help ease this process. For example, the “Learn Through This” campaign, an initiative of VTech Electronics North America, is expanding learning opportunities for kids at home. Here’s what to
know about the campaign and how your family can access these resources: Online Resources: Through the LeapFrog Learning Path, an online portal featuring free resources to keep children learning at home, parents can find valuable advice from learning experts on a variety of topics, such as preparing kids with 21st century skills
and learning to read. In addition, the portal provides a suggested daily schedule, a curated list of educational websites and free printable activity books to help parents maximize their children’s time outside the classroom and keep them engaged. Families can also access an extended free trial of the LeapFrog Academy educational app, as well
as reduced costs on the six-month and 12-month plans. An interactive learning program filled with over 2,000 engaging games and activities for 3-6 year olds, the app can be used on any device with no Wi-Fi required. Learning Toys: It’s not always easy to ensure toys chosen for children enrich their development and encourage learning. To help parents find the right toys to meet their children’s needs, VTech and LeapFrog will be sharing video walkthroughs on their YouTube channels. Whether a parent is looking for a role-play toy for their child that loves pretending to be a chef, a desk to practice writing skills or an interactive learning system to get kids excited about reading, personalized toy recommendations will make it easier for parents to keep children engaged and learning. Support for Schools: As schools remain closed, many parents are getting a fuller picture of the important role teachers play and the scope
of their responsibilities. To support educators faced with the challenge of recreating the classroom from home, VTech Electronics North America made a $50,000 donation to AdoptAClassroom. org’s COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund. The fund will be disbursed to high-needs teachers and schools impacted by COVID-19. A national, award-winning nonprofit, AdoptAClassroom. org is working directly with educators, schools and vendor partners to identify their needs and get tools in the hands of students to make sure the learning doesn’t stop. He had been receiving medical checks twice daily in keeping with the protocol for coronavirus cases from the ship and was found unresponsive
on Thursday. After fellow sailors revived him with CPR, he was transferred to the naval hospital, where he died days later. The USS Theodore Roosevelt has been docked in Guam for two weeks. The carrier became the site of controversy after its captain, Brett Crozier, was fired by Acting Naval Secretary April 15, 2020
Thomas Modly for sending an email that quickly leaked to the public begging for his ship to be evacuated. Of the 5,000 soldiers on board, 100 had tested positive for the virus when Crozier sent his email, and eight with severe symptoms had already been evacuated to the hospital in Guam.
Modly himself resigned last week after Democratic lawmakers called for his removal, charging he had prematurely relieved Crozier of his command when the captain had just been doing what he thought was right for his crew. He was replaced by Army Undersecretary James McPherson.

Trump says record oil production cuts will soon double By Desert Star Staff Global oil producers have already agreed on the world’s largest ever production cut, but US President Donald Trump has said that cut may soon be doubled, to bring the world “back to business” from the coronavirus pandemic. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting States (OPEC) and producers outside the bloc agreed on Sunday to cut their output for May and June by 9.7 million barrels per day (bpd), an amount equal to ten percent of the world’s oil supply and the largest such cut in history. “Having been involved in the negotiation,” Trump tweeted on Monday, “the number that OPEC+ is looking to cut is 20 Million Barrels a day, not the 10 Million that is generally being reported.” Having been involved in the negotiations, to put it mildly, the number that OPEC+ is looking to cut is 20 Million Barrels a day, not the 10 Million that is

generally being reported. If anything near this happens, and the World gets back to business from the Covid 19..... — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 13, 2020 “If anything near this happens, and the World gets back to business from the Covid 19 disaster, the Energy Industry will be strong again, far faster than is currently anticipated,” he continued. Trump is not the first person to float a figure of 20 million bpd, or a fifth of global supply. As OPEC+ debated the specifics of Sunday’s cut, sources within the oil cartel told Reuters last week that such a cut was discussed, and the figure appeared in a draft statement seen by the news agency. While such a steep cut would be doubly unprecedented, it would still not make up for the drop in global demand. The coronavirus pandemic has
seen this demand fall by a third, and oil prices reach twodecade lows of less than $20 per barrel at the beginning of April. This drop presented an existential threat to American shale oil producers, who need a price of around $40 per barrel to turn a profit. Trump, therefore, has pressured the OPEC states April 15, 2020
into signing off on the cuts. He has also negotiated directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Arabian King Salman, who, against the backdrop of falling demand, have remained locked into a price war for over a month. By flooding the already saturated global markets with cheap oil, Saudi Arabia sought to
force competing shale oil producers — like the US and Russia — out of business, Putin said earlier this month. Trump thanked Moscow and Riyadh on Monday for calling a truce and “getting this very big business back on track.”

Restaurants Look to Insurance Companies for Aid to Survive Crisis
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Consumer groups want insurance companies to help prop up the restaurant industry, which has taken a massive hit in the COVID-19 crisis. Tens of thousands of restaurants have been forced to close their dining rooms, and many have closed entirely, resulting in massive layoffs. Doug Heller, an insurance expert with the Consumer Federation of America, urged insurance companies to lower premiums during the shutdown.
“They don’t present the same kind of risk to the insurance company that they used to. Insurance companies either have to re-rate us, or they’re going to be sitting on a growing mountain of a coronavirus windfall. And that’s not acceptable,” Heller said. “As all of us are struggling through these times, insurance companies shouldn’t be the benefactor.” Farmers Insurance has said it will reduce premiums on many business customers by 20% for at
least two months, and other companies may follow suit. However, some restaurant groups are suing their insurers to force them to honor “business interruption” policies, which normally include natural disasters. The companies have said the virus doesn’t cause property damage, so it doesn’t qualify. Heller pointed out that state insurance commissioners are elected to protect consumers, and he’s urging them to take the lead on this issue. “We’re calling on insurance
commissioners to step in the breach here and make sure that businesses like restaurants don’t overpay for insurance while they have no exposure, or much limited exposure, as a result of the
coronavirus epidemic,” he said. A group of restaurants also has formed a business interruption task force to lobby the Trump administration to intervene with the insurance companies.

“One of Us” – A Searing Look into Brooklyn’s Hasidic Community
As we all painfully know, going to the movies is a memory from the not so distant past, although it feels like forever ago. In my desire to keep readers informed of films to watch, I have turned to Netflix and Amazon as my sources. Some of them have current release dates, while others have older ones. The first film, which is streaming on Netflix, falls into the latter category and is titled “One of Us,” a no holds barred documentary feature illuminating the intricate, almost police state of the Hasidic Jews living in Brooklyn. Originally released in 2017, the film was produced and directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, former members of that biotic community, and illuminates the severe consequences to anyone wishing to leave the safety of that non-secular “state.” The story of “One of Us” revolves around three people who endured the relentless psychological abuse that this community inflicts upon a member wishing to leave that “sanctuary” – Ari Hershkositz, Luzder Twersy, and Etty Ausch, whose story is particularly heartbreaking. As parents arrange marriages, with guidance from the rabbis and elders of the community, she married a man she had only seen a few times. It turned out that her husband was violent to her and abusive to their five children. Despite enormous pressure from her extended family, and the wise men of the Community, Etty had enough and removing her wig to reveal her hair, as well as changing

5 Great Ways to Celebrate Earth Month By Desert Star Staff Want to go green while practicing social distancing? Here are a few ideas to consider: • Maximize your time at home by planting a garden. Not only will the plants you grow help to reduce carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere, but you’ll also be creating a healthy habitat for birds, insects and other small critters. Plus, if you plant vegetables, you can reduce your carbon footprint by reducing the amount of food you need to purchase that was shipped long distances. • Your home theater is likely more important to you these days then ever before, making it a good place to start when making eco-friendly home upgrades. Consider a www.desertstarweekly.com
mercury-free projector with a hybrid laser and LED light source, which removes the need for hazardous bulbs. With a long bulb life of 20,000 hours, selecting a Casio’s LampFree projector is one upgrade with a lasting impact. • You don’t need to spend a lot of time or money to substantially improve your home’s energy efficiency. Take an afternoon to swap out the incandescent bulbs in all your light fixtures and replace them with LEDs or another energy-efficient alternative. • Get outdoors and enjoy nature using wearable tech like the PRT-B50 Pro Trek Watch, which can help steer you through a solitary hike. With Quad Sensor technology, you
will know the direction, weather, temperature and altitude at the touch of a button. In addition, an accelerometer keeps track of your steps and calories burned. The Bluetooth-enabled watch connects to an app that will also record your location into memory so you can find your way back. • Learn more about environmental causes and get involved remotely. Many organizations host online petitions, which are shared directly with policymakers. This is a great way to have your voice heard on issues that are important to you. With a bit of creativity, you can show the planet some love in a sociallyresponsible way. StatePoint April 15, 2020

Teachers and Students Find Purpose Through Leadership Programs By Desert Star Staff Many teachers are drawn to education for the opportunity to make a difference in their students’ lives. However, when faced with guiding students through trying times in order to meet their big goals, teachers need resources that strengthen social and emotional skills. At Port Chester Middle School in Port Chester, NY, teacher Allison Silverman faced this very challenge and used the lessons in the Lead4Change program to be successful. Lead4Change is a free student leadership curriculum offering the chance to submit a student-led service learning project for a grant of up to $10,000. Its series of leadership lessons provides opportunities for strong student engagement through collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving and reflection. Such programs offer students numerous benefits. An independent research study found that participating in Lead4Change caused significant growth in areas such as leadership skills (60 percent of students improved), respect for others (54 percent) and ambition and innovation (53 percent). However, teachers can have equally transformative experiences. When Silverman and her students formed the “PC
Hunger Fighters” team, her students studied the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and together, came to consensus on creating a vertical garden using upcycled materials, aiming to help the 200,000 food insecure individuals in their county. Then, Silverman heard from a student participating in the program. “I received a very desperate call from one of our students,” she recalls. “There had been a shooting the night before and a 26-yearold Port Chester resident was killed. The student knew this man. I remember sitting on the bench next to my school garden and crying. I cried so hard. I had no idea what to do, or what to tell the kids.” “I thought about how insignificant our ‘little gardens’ would be alongside challenges like poverty and violence,” Silverman says. The students coped with the tragedy by using the Lead4Change’s lessons in communication, overcoming barriers and working as a team. They knew more could be done because of what they’d practiced. “I cancelled our celebration scheduled for the following day and instead met in the boardroom with the kids. For three hours, we talked about injustices and inequalities,
pledging to continue to work together to fight these things and make a real difference. We realized our project was important,” says Silverman. Their efforts were awarded as one of the grand prizewinning teams, earning a $10,000 grant, though their participation was a reward in and of itself because of the leadership skills they mastered. This is just one of the hundreds of stories unfolding nationwide. “The Lead4Change experience was as valuable to
me as it was for the students,” shares Thomas Loner, a teacher from South Carolinalocated Bates Middle school, whose “Bates’ Bodacious Bantams” student team helped a local homeless shelter by collecting supplies. “This program forced me to give up ‘control’ of my classroom and let students become leaders.” Teacher Holly Hartman in Lebanon, PA continues to experience the program’s benefits after years of participation. “This journey
not only helps my students grow, but somehow also manages to help me become a bit wiser with each experience,” she says. For more information about the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, visit lead4change.org. Leadership curriculum will not only prepare students for a future of increasingly complex social issues, but also serve as a catalyst for helping teachers and students alike find purpose and meaning. PepsiCo Pledges $1 Million to No Kid Hungry
By Desert Star Staff Athletes including New York Giants Running Back Saquon Barkley, New York Yankees Outfielder Aaron Judge and WNBA All-Star A’ja Wilson join to rally donations and support meal distribution to children in need With the global health crisis driving school closures across the country, kids who rely on school for food have missed nearly 608 million meals to date. Because students urgently need support to meet their nutrition needs during this time of crisis, PepsiCo and the company’s philanthropic arm The PepsiCo Foundation announced the launch of Give Meals, Give Hope. It’s an initiative to help connect kids in need with critical food through a fundraising campaign with No Kid Hungry, a national campaign working to ensure every kid gets three meals a day during the pandemic and after, especially those in the hardest-hit communities. Despite nationwide efforts to help feed children during this emergency, significant hurdles remain including increased demand for rapid supply of nutritious food and beverages, low awareness of meal availability, and distribution barriers to bring meals “the last

Protecting Your Financial Health in These Uncertain Times
By Desert Star Staff With expected delays in bill payments, unprecedented layoffs, hiring freezes and related hardships, many Americans are facing new financial challenges. “COVID-19 has impacted all industries and individuals from all walks of life,” says Rod Griffin, senior director of Consumer Education and Advocacy for Experian. “With all of these rapid changes, you might not be thinking about how your credit report may be impacted yet, but you likely will soon.” As you adapt to life in this unprecedented time, the experts at Experian are sharing strategies and resources for protecting your financial health and credit history. • Check your credit report. While checking your credit report regularly is always a good idea, this is especially true now. You can get a free copy of your report from Experian every 30 days with a free account. In addition, you can get a free credit report from each of the three national credit reporting agencies annually by visiting annualcreditreport.com.
• Maintain your score. Making credit payments on time and in-full and keeping your utilization rate (balanceto-limit ratio) as low as possible are the best ways to maintain your credit score. At a maximum, you should try to keep your credit card balances below 30 percent in total and for each individual card. For many reasons, maintaining these habits might not be possible right now. However, paying your minimum monthly payments and anything additional you can afford will go a long way. • Talk to your lenders. Keep in mind, lenders don’t want you to fall behind on your payments any more than you do. If you’re facing trouble making monthly payments, contact your lender or creditor. They may have options for helping you cope with COVID19-related financial hardships. For example, lenders can place your accounts in forbearance or deferment for a period of time. • Use credit as a financial tool. While debt is a problem, credit can be a financial tool that can help improve your overall financial health
in the long run. As always, avoid making rash decisions when it comes to credit and your financial health. • Check out resources. Use new educational resources that can help you protect your financial health in these uncertain times. For example, Experian is hosting a series of #CreditChat conversations surrounding COVID-19 on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. ET on Twitter. The program covers important personal finance topics. The next
several #CreditChats will be dedicated to items like methods and strategies for bill repayment, paying down debt, emergency financial assistance and preparing for retirement during COVID-19. You can also visit Experian’s blog post, “COVID-19 and Your Credit Report,” for updated information pertaining to how COVID-19 may impact your creditworthiness. Additionally, the “Ask Experian” blog shares immediate and evolving
resources on its COVID-19 Updates page. To obtain a free Experian credit report and other free services, enroll at Experian.com. While staying safe and healthy should be everyone’s number one priority, it is also important to protect your financial health at the same time. Be sure to leverage all the resources available to you that can help you emerge from this crisis in good financial standing. StatePoint

Apple and Google Partner on Opt-In COVID-19 Contact Tracing Technology
By Desert Star Staff Apple says that user privacy and security will be central to the design of the project. Participation will be opt-in, and privacy, transparency, and consent are “of the utmost importance of this effort.” Since COVID-19 can be transmitted through close proximity to affected individuals, public health officials have identified contact tracing as a valuable tool to help contain its spread. Several leading public health authorities, universities, and NGOs around the world have been doing vital work to develop opt-in contact tracing technology. To further this cause, Apple and Google will be launching a comprehensive solution that includes application programming interfaces (APIs) and operating system-level technology to assist in enabling contact tracing. Civil Liberties Group Sues County Over Restrictions On Religious Gatherings
NBC PS Taylor Martinez RIVERSIDE (CNS) – A San Francisco-based civil liberties group has filed a federal lawsuit against Riverside County and other entities statewide over barring religious gatherings in the name of coronavirus mitigation. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Riverside on Monday, seeks an injunction against measures that reflect a “gross abuse of power” that have been invoked in the name of public protection amid the coronavirus emergency, according to the complaint. “It is the court’s duty to defend these constitutional principles (of freedom of religion, speech and assembly) by safeguarding
the many rights and liberties of Californians, that the defendants so brazenly violate,” the lawsuit states. The lawsuit brought by the Center for American Liberty directly challenges Gov. Gavin Newsom’s March 19 executive order on stay-athome requirements, as well as Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser’s April 6 amendment to his previous directives, which specified fines for gatherings of any size beyond the home, while continuing carve-out exemptions for designated operations, such as childcare facilities. The order expires on April 30. Parties to the action include Church Unlimited
Pastor James Dean Moffatt of Indio and World Life Ministries International Pastor Brenda Wood of Riverside. “Wood believes that her parishioners need to connect with other people so as to give them hope and encouragement,” according to the complaint. “Wood believes she can implement proper social distancing measures similar to those practiced by restaurants, auto mechanics and abortion clinics. Wood also would like to offer drivein services for parishioners.” The suit cites the First Amendment prohibition against governmental interference in the “free exercise” of worship and the due process clause of the 14th Amendment, which
protects against arbitrary governmental infringement on “life, liberty or property.” By making some activities exempt from the public health restrictions, the plaintiffs argue, the county and state are behaving unfairly, lacking standards that recognize religious liberty. “Laws and government actions that burden religious practice and are either not neutral or not generally applicable must satisfy a compelling governmental interest and be narrowly tailored to achieve that end,” the complaint states. According to the document, there is “no historical precedence” for the prohibitions against religious practices. The plaintiffs pointed to incidents going back to 1948 showing California courts generally reluctant to tolerate quarantine orders except in instances where public health authorities could verify that the targets of a quarantine had “an infectious disease.” Newsom and Kaiser are among the defendants in the suit. Others include every Riverside County supervisor, Chief Executive Officer George Johnson, Sheriff Chad Bianco, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors and Attorney General Xavier Becerra. Riverside County
public information officer Brooke Federico did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A hearing date on the lawsuit has not been set. On Friday, county officials were continuing to preach the need for adherence to stay-at-home orders and the preference for viewing religious services via the internet. However, when Harmeet Dhillon, the attorney who founded the center, signaled a legal action challenging the county’s position on Easter Sunday observances was imminent, Johnson modified the public health officer’s earlier prohibition against any type of gathering and instead issued an exemption to allow “drive-up church services,” while emphasizing the benefits of social distancing. “Criminalizing individual participation at a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other house of worship clearly violates the First Amendment,” Dhillon said. “If a Californian is able to go to Costco or the local marijuana shop or liquor store and buy goods in a responsible, socially distanced manner, then he or she must be allowed to practice their faith using the same precautions.” Source: NBC Palm Springs
