$8 million Library and Learning Center By Jackie Devereaux
DESERT HOT SPRINGS – This often neglected windy city just north of Palm Springs is smiling again because resident will be getting a new $8 million library and learning center by 2014. That’s because the Desert Hot Springs (DHS) City Council has been pursuing two innovative projects designed to uplift the community’s resources while assisting people in starting new businesses. Early in 2012, the Economic Development Committee kicked off
one new program in collaboration with Dr. David George of the College of the Desert and the DHS Chamber to assist people in starting new businesses. Over the past year, Pastor Jerryl Pope and DHS City Manager Rick Daniels have been working with Dr. George to finalize that program for launch. “In time we will be looking to get a component of the high school curriculum to include entrepreneurship. STAR letters Dear Editor, On behalf of C.H.A.R.L.E.E Family Care, I would sincerely like to thank you for the charitable donation you have provided for our events, “So You Think You Can BBQ?” held on Mar. 2. It is getting harder and harder these days to find people that are as giving and kind as you. Thanks to your generous sponsorship, we were able to raise awareness of our clients who are “Aging Out” of foster care. As we try to provide a structured family home for the children entrusted in our care, it pleases us to know there are others who are committed to the same cause. You have given us the opportunity to make our youth in our care aware of the community around them and to prove that others really do care about them. We feel extremely fortunate to have forged a new relationship with such caring and generous neighbors. Again, we are very grateful for the contribution you provided. This event would not have been a success without you the generous support you have provided us throughout the year. We deeply appreciate the willingness with which you have in the past and continue to sponsor our efforts to make C.H.A.R.L.E.E. Family Care a true success for children in need. We sincerely hope that this association will be maintained and that you will continue to support us in our future endeavors. Thank you for believing in C.H.A.R.L.E.E. Family Care! Sincerely, Richard Rios, Executive Director Dear Jackie The Desert Star Weekly did a fabulous job for the Desert Horticultural Society. Thank for the wonderful write-up. One of your newspaper boxes is right in front the Palm Springs bike store. That is perfect. Someone can rent a bike and then ride the route of the garden tour. I am so happy to know about your newspaper. We have two main events each year, the other one is in the fall, but we also have guest speakers and such that people would like to know about. Thank you for being there. Our three meetings each year are at The Living Desert and that is where we have speakers. Again, thank you for bring the DSHCV event to the attention of our community. Immigration Reform: What’s Washington up to? By Jackie Devereaux
While drafters of a comprehensive immigration reform bill raced to complete the text unveiled on Tuesday in Washington, D.C., many of us living in the Coachella Valley are scratching our heads wondering what on Earth are our politicians up to now? Nearly everyone agrees that immigration reform is needed and long overdue, but it appears that the Senate’s Gang of Eight has yet another opportunity to delay the process of presenting any sweeping legislation because of the recent bombings at the Boston marathon.
EDITOR’S Opinion Jackie Devereaux
After a number of missed deadlines and failed attempts to reach a consensus it appears that the Senate Judiciary Committee has postponed the hearing (again) to Friday with more hearings scheduled for next week as well. How many more times will they postpone this major piece of legislation? If makes a thinking person wonder if they will ever get this darn thing done. Hopefully, our newly elected Congressman Raul Ruiz will garner some consensus to push this sorely-needed legislation through despite the fact that most Senate Republicans and Democrats have yet to be briefed on it. The “Outline of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013” can be found in it entirety at www.thedailybeast.com. I will attempt to outline the major parts of the legislation briefly here. Part one, the “Goal for Border Security” is to achieve and maintain effective control in “high risk” border sectors along our Southern borders with “persistent surveillance” producing a 90 percent effectiveness rate in any fiscal year. I read this as meaning increased patrols and longer waits at Mexicali, Tecate and Tijuana border crossings in California. Part two deals with a $3 billion “Border Security and Fencing Fund.” This means more surveillance and detection devices developed or used by the Department of Defense (DOD); additional Border Patrol and Customs Agents at Southern
ports of entry; more fixed, mobile and agent portable surveillance systems; and unmanned aerial fixed-wing aircraft, equipment and staff to utilize those systems.
Part three describes the “Border Security Triggers,” which says that no immigrant in undocumented status may be adjusted to “Registered Provision Immigrant” (RPI) legal status until number one and two above are implemented. That could take years! It does say that except for immigrants who are eligible for the DREAM Act and the Agricultural legalization, aliens in RPI status shall NOT be eligible to adjust to Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) status until the above strategies and measure have been achieved. Again, that could take years! So what does all this mumbo jumbo mean to the average Mexican immigrant in the Coachella Valley? That it could take years to gain permanent legal status. Why all the delays? Don’t these people deserve better? Is the average American teenager going to work in the fields picking fruits and vegetables? Is your brother or sister, aunt or uncle going to do it? I think not. Why are we denying these people permanent legal status when our own citizens won’t do that kind of work? These people are helping feed our country and we are making it hard to live without fear of deportation. have passports, birth certificates or any written documents proving The 19-page document their identities back then, and outlines more requirements for neither did most people who gaining permanent legal status. There is a “Process for Creating Border Security Accountability,” which will appropriate up to $2 billion for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to use to reach its 90 percent effectiveness rating along our Southern Borders. It provides for 3,500 additional Customs agents nationwide and authorizes the National Guard to be deployed to the Southwest to construct double- and triple-layer fencing; increase ground-based mobile surveillance systems; deploy additional unarmed, unmanned aerial systems (drones); provide entered through Ellis Island! Snowbirds Should Take Steps To Secure Their Winter Homes
By Investigator Lance Colmer Soon residents throughout the Coachella Valley will be securing their winter homes to migrate to cooler temperatures in other parts of the nation. This yearly transition has been a ritual for thousands of snowbirds who flock to the desert communities to escape harsh winters, but return to their second homes in spring to get relief from the coming summer heat. A 2012 Special Report on Snowbirds, conducted by the Coachella Valley Community Health Monitor found that nearly 85,000 Coachella Valley residents are snowbirds. The demographic profile of snowbirds in the Coachella Valley was determined to be, for the most part, older, retired individuals with high levels of income and education. Given the expense associated withseasonal living, it is not surprising that the snowbird population is relatively

about targeting your residence. Owners who leave valuable items in their winter homes, such as televisions, computers or appliances, should mark these items with their driver’s license number. Burglars don’t want marked merchandise because it is more difficult to fence or pawn and is evidence of
guilt if they are caught. What’s the best crime prevention tool ever? A good neighbor! Law enforcement officers cannot be everywhere at once. Your neighbors are the “eyes and ears” of the community and will be the first to report suspicious activity near your home. Develop
great relationships with your neighbors and look out for each other. Creating a neighborhood watch group and partnering with law enforcement is a great way to keep your winter home safe.
[ArtICLe 8: SeptemBer 7, 1951]
This annual migration also means that a large number of homes will be left unattended during the summer months, making them prime targets for burglars. Residential burglaries can be lucrative and are relatively easy to commit. In a 2009 report, the FBI found that nearly 2.1 million burglaries occur each year, with 72 percent being home burglaries. With proper planning and preparation, snowbirds can lessen the likelihood of their winter residence becoming another statistic. It may sound obvious to say “Lock your doors,” but many burglars enter a home through an unlocked door or window. Prior to making your final exit from the home, conduct an inspection to ensure that all locks are secured. Never leave a house key in an area that you assume is hidden. Burglars commonly check for keys under doormats and flowerpots, as well as on door and window ledges. If you decide to leave a key with a trusted neighbor, do not label the key with your address, just in case your neighbors become burglary victims and your key is found. To make the job of a would-be burglar even harder, all exterior doors should be fitted with deadbolt locks. Sliding glass doors provide one of the easiest access points to the home and should be fitted with additional locking mechanisms, such as pin style or bolt locks made specifically for patio doors. Making your home appear “lived in” can also deter a burglar. Start by fitting exterior lights with motion sensors, which activate when someone walks near or under the light. Remember to discontinue newspaper service, and have your mail forwarded to your summer residence. Owners who consider installing alarm systems should leave detailed contact information with the alarm company, who will forward this information to the police during an alarm response. Owners can also list a trustworthy full-time neighbor as a secondary contact with the alarm company. Visible alarm signs and window stickers are also a good idea and make a burglar think twice
Freight came once a week and was stored until called for in a small building. The row of palm trees growing along the track on the south side near the small depot offered “delicious shade” after a seven mile walk across the desert in loose sand and much sunshine overhead. There was a water pipe of cool mountain water by one palm tree, and the memory of this is still better than any soda fountain drink. The R.R. water tank was fed by a pipe from Snow Creek and often overflowed, keeping some grass alive along the tiny stream which soon faded into hot desert sands. Burros relished this bite of green food. The R.R. station was originated under the name of Palm Springs, then changed to Noria, then to Gray in honor of Hilda Gray, then finally to Garnet, because garnets can be found in the hills near the track to the east. We homesteaders were all very poor and existed on unbelievably small sums of money. There was no work, and no money circulated. Four dollars per month per person was an average food allowance. And I have lived on less. What we went without was a longer list than what we had. No butter, no meat, no fruits, no vegetables, no bread or anything out of a store. The day-to-day menu was beans, pancakes (without butter), potatoes mostly, and wild rabbits. Of these, some were jacks and some cottontails. Every family had a different method of cooking them, but to me they were always just rabbits. And I do not like rabbits. But to preserve life we will do many things. All of us burned brush and roots for cooking, and in cold weather for heating. A few could afford kerosene cook stoves. Lamps and lanterns furnished light. Candles could be used in winter but melted in summer time. Walking to the post office, carrying water every day, hunting rabbits, gathering firewood, clearing land, building cabins, making bread, and doing things of lesser importance made very busy weeks. We all gradually became acquainted with the wildlife about us. The opportunity was good, because at that time the desert was alive with many things which have become very scarce or practically disappeared

by this time. As civilization comes in, wildlife moves out. I greatly miss the roving flocks of a hundred or more turtledoves which were in evidence, giving their plaintive calls at daybreak. Then too, there used to be many coveys of desert quail strutting happily about from one greasewood bush to another. Jack rabbits jumped up and dashed away wherever you might go for a walk. Coyotes were often seen, and their yapping at night was a lullaby in keeping with the mystery of the desert. So every day we learned more about desert animals, birds, snakes, lizards, and insects. Most were retiring and kept out of our way. Not so with the desert rat. This is the smartest little creature of them all, and it came forward at once to investigate us and our belongings. Rats went in and out of our boxes and bags. If no holes were present, then [holes] were made. Food was eaten on the spot or carried away to their storehouse in a business-like way. A 25-pound box of prunes has 2,000 prunes, and rats left alone will carry every one away in a few nights. They will eat labels off cans, eat corks out of bottles, and cut holes through one-inch boards easily, and two-inch boards with more time. Yet they look so clean and are so smart in eluding their enemies that one is tempted to forgive their depredations. All snakes are after them, coyotes work sly tricks, and hawks, owls and birds of prey watch for the busy rats day and night. Yet they prosper in a country where food is a problem and there is no water. Rats can climb a barrel cactus and gather seeds from its top in spite of all the thorns. . . .So until the cabin was built, with all our food and belongings scattered about the open desert, rats were quite a nuisance. Even after the cabin was finished, they dug underneath and cut holes up through the floors. The coyotes were large and fine, with thick fur in winter, so I trapped them and sold the hides in St. Louis. The money helped in many ways. I
had skinned a coyote. I got to wondering what he had eaten. So I opened its stomach, and among other things found in it was a large rat. This brought up the question, What had the rats eaten? Therefore I opened its stomach and found greasewood leaves, bark, seeds, and a small rolled paper. I unrolled the paper carefully and read, “Keep in a cool dry place.” This was from one of my milk can labels. In the homestead days there
had been some good rainy seasons and the desert was green. Talmage Brothers and others brought in 2 or 300 head of white-face cattle, a few bulls among them, and they wandered at will, eating here and there, and going to Two Bunch or Seven Palms or Willow Hole when thirsty. One very dark night, I was walking home from the railroad, no moon, thick clouds obscured the stars, spits of rain fell, and a rumble of thunder proclaimed an approaching storm. In a hurry to get to the cabin and shelter, I took a short cut through the heavy, tangled brush round Two Bunch Palms. In the complete darkness I came to what I thought was a fallen palm trunk and so made a big step to get on top of it. But it turned out to be the big bull of the cattle herd lying down and asleep. He lurched to his feet, gave a thunderous bellow, threw me sky winding, and stampeded the sleeping cows off into the night. www.cabotsmuseum.org for tour information and hours.

2014 Budget
Over the next few weeks I will try to break down some of the key features of the President’s recently released budget. The U.S. health-care system generates roughly $1.3 trillion in revenues annually. That’s
InvESTmEnT Know-How Kevin Powell about 16 percent of our GDP. The U.S. spends more per capita on health care than any other nation in the world and health care represents the highest percentage of GDP than any other nation in the world. So I thought that would be a good place to start our analysis. There are significant changes to nearly all facets of Medicare and Medicaid in the 2014 budget. Spending for Obamacare will more than double from the initial projections in 2010. Plus there is a requirement that the new health law is up and running by a Jan. 1, 2014. That’s going to be very difficult to achieve since so many states (37) have refused to set up the state health care exchanges for various reasons. All 50 states have an October 1, 2013 deadline to have their exchanges in place. That is not going to happen. With all the confusion on which states will have exchanges and what systems they will have in place, one fear is that lower income citizens will have difficulty using the system. The number of Americans projected to obtain insurance from the new health care laws has already been lowered by 5 million people to 27 million by 2017. It is estimated that there are currently more than 50 million Americans who do not have any health coverage. The CBO further estimates that some 8 million people will lose current coverage offered by their employers. That’s three times more than the original estimates from the administration. One of the key features of Obamacare has always been that we will pay less in premiums and receive more coverage. The new budget points out that some people will absolutely pay more in the future. People with catastrophic plans today are the most likely who will have to pay higher premiums in the future. They will be forced to purchase a more comprehensive plan.
Insurance companies have stated that cost for private insurance is going to rise precipitously in the future. A recent insurance study, estimated that health insurance premiums in some states could soar because insurance costs are going to jump. California could see a 62 percent increase while Wisconsin and Ohio could see 80 percent increases for private health insurance. Younger Americans are more likely to see their premiums increase because they have the lowest costs today. A new program as part of Obamacare, called the Basic Health Program, won’t start until 2015, angering some administration allies. The Basic Health Plan was intended to be an option for states that want to cover more low-income people with a government health program, instead of private coverage sold through state exchanges. The provision was added to the law by Senator Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat, whose state operates a similar program and sought federal money to expand it. Some proposed cuts include lower payments to drug companies of about $140 billion; reducing hospital
reimbursements by about $30 billion and another $25 billion from Medicaid cuts. One way to pay for the higher projected costs will be higher Medicare payroll taxes. The administration has already hinted at this. A big part of the administration’s cost savings is a projection that health care costs will not rise as much on an annual basis in the future as they have in the past few years. In fact, it cuts as much as $126 billion from 2020 Medicare spending due to this assumption. Health care costs have slowed in the past few years but so too has our overall inflation rate. Current health care cost increases are still much higher than the overall rate of inflation. The 2014 budget is a proposal. It is not the law of the land like Obamacare. I strongly recommend that all readers pay close attention to this area. There is a lot of work to do and since this area is such a large part of our economy, we cannot afford mistakes that jeopardize coverage or higher costs for any of us. Kevin Powell has been a financial advisor for the past 27 years and can be reached at kpplanner1@aol.com.

One LPGA Pro played with four amateurs. About 20 celebrities were in the Amateur field and played with a different Pro and Amateurs each day. This two day event is a fan favorite of Pros and Celebrities. Fans are able to bring cameras The Annenbergs were close personal friends of Lady Thatcher, even before she became Prime Minister. An example of this closeness, and of how little things that grow into world events, is a letter written from Sunnylands dated February 21, 1975 wherein Sir Walter wrote, “Former Governor of California, Ronald Regan, will be in London, April 6, 7 and 8 … it is indeed his hope that he may have an opportunity to visit with you …. While the former Governor holds no official position at this time, he is indeed a leader of conservative political philosophy in the United States, and is only natural he would very much enjoy a meeting with the leader of Britain’s Conservative party….” Thatcher replied in the affirmative, and the rest is history. Another Thatcher story concerns the effect (indirectly) she had on Sunnylands, itself. As the story goes, just before Margaret Thatcher’s visit to Sunnylands in
1996, a disease struck the oleanders throughout the Coachella Valley. Bushes were dying and there wasn’t much to be done to save them. Until then, the Annenberg estate concealed a chain link fence around the property in their oleander bushes. However, it would not do to have Mrs. Thatcher welcomed to Sunnylands with the sight of dead and dying bushes. So the Annenbergs decided to remove the oleanders, tear down the old fence, and build the distinctive Pepto-Bismol-pink concrete wall that continues to surround the estate to this day.
Melvyn’S reStaurant Flowing champagne, cocaine in abundance and sex – a lot of sex. Sounds like a pretty interesting read, and it is. Only it pertains to Grace Robbins and her husband, Harold, whose steamy,
potboiler novels have sold more than 750 million copies around the world. Grace and Harold Robbins helped create the sex-powerglamour genre, not only in Harold’s novels, but also in their daily lives during the 60s, 70s and 1980s. Harold has passed on, and Grace is passing along some of the more intimate details of their torrid lives in a newly released book, “Cinderella and the Carpetbagger: My life as the Wife of ‘World’s BestSelling Author’”. Since Palm Springs was one of the Robbins’ playgrounds, it is only fitting that Melvyn’s Restaurant at the Legendary Ingleside Inn in Palm Springs is hosting a three-course Gourmet Book Signing along with a question and answer period on Wednesday, May 8 at 6:00 p.m. The all-inclusive cost is $65 per person (inclusive). A similar Letter of Intent will be developed with Riverside County for the Community Library component of the larger project.” “Alternatively, I met with the same firm that provided about $6 million of New Market Tax Credit funding and they expressed strong interest in funding this larger project of the Learning Center and the Community Library. Their conclusion is that both facilities are eligible for use of tax credits, and they had a very positive experience with performance by the City on the Community Health and Wellness Center. I want to carry the same design theme from the Community Health and Wellness Center through this facility; not the modular look that current plans show. TWEETATHON
Whether you are a Tweeteraddicted traveler or just a fan of social media, an historic milestone was reached last week as Panasonic Avionics Corporation connected passengers flying over five continents via Twitter in the firstever global in-flight Tweetathon. The conversation took place as passengers on five aircraft flying over five continents chartered their journeys and interacted with earthbound Tweeter users 35,000 feet below. Passengers used Twitter to compare in-flight menus, plan itineraries and compete for the most Twitter mentions, using their mobile phones and tablets to access Panasonic’s highspeed broadband technology. Travelers on American Airlines, United Airlines, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus and Japan airlines took part in the global exchange,
Dogs are closer to the ground than their tweetering masters, but they also need a vacation or two a year. However, the choices are limited as not all destinations are pet-friendly. So Priceline.com – a leader in global online hotel reservations – surveyed the number (almost 300,000) of hotels and accommodations in its inventory and came up with the top-10 pet-friendly cities in the country, based on the number of pet-friendly hotels, off-leash dog parks and walkability. The results may surprise you. The top ten cities are, in order: Albuquerque; Portland; Tucson; Tampa; Indianapolis; Salt Lake City; Austin; Tulsa; Louisville and San Francisco. Not on the list, but probably should be, is San Luis Obispo, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Both the City and County of San Luis Obispo have recognized the tourism benefits of being pet-friendly and many local hotels not only allow visits by pooches, they offer canine-friendly amenities. Dogs are allowed on famous Pismo Beach, where they can catch the waves along with Pismo and Goatee, the beach’s

Coachella fest 2013 While nightfall typically brings cooler temps to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, there are plenty of good reasons to arrive early to the Empire Polo Club in Indio.
Because Biffy Clyro also performs relatively early Saturday on the Coachella Stage (2:25 p.m.), why not catch one of Scotland’s best rock bands in action up close for a 35-minute sonic ride. The trio’s 2009 album

a position closer to the myriad of stages. Indeed some of music’s most promising up-andcoming acts and under-the-radar groundbreaking veterans get to shine (just like the sun!) earlier in the day. Here is a roundup of some highly recommended artists who are playing and definitely worth checking out if you are arriving for round two of Coachella this weekend. Please remember to confirm set times at http://www.coachella.com/ prior to heading to the fest. Johnny Marr may have first garnered attention for his essential role as a member of The Smiths back in the early 1980s, but his recently-issued “The Messenger” album has music fans talking about the fortysomething singersongwriter-guitarist like he is the next big thing. The good news for those headed to Indio early on the first day of the event is that Marr is scheduled to perform a 45-minute set of original songs in the Mojave Tent at 4:15 on Friday. Be there. A full day before Sigur Rós takes the stage to close out Saturday’s schedule of live music, fellow Icelandic wonder Of Monsters and Men will perform a 50-minute set on the Outdoor Theatre stage beginning at 5:45 p.m. on Friday. The six-member, indie folk-pop band performs a beautiful and tender style that is as accessible as it is original. Vintage Trouble is one of the most exciting young acts playing at Coachella this year and there is simply no reason to miss the Hollywood, California-bred outfit’s 12:15 p.m. afternoon set on the Coachella Stage. This is one of the few epic artists playing on the big stage where it will be relatively easy to get close. So stock up on bottled water once you’re in the gates and immerse yourself in Vintage Trouble’s blend of soul, funk, hard rock, and rhythm & blues.

This data will illustrate to potential funders the tremendous need for LGBT-specific health services here in the Coachella Valley—a fact that will make funding requests more competitive and therefore, more likely to be awarded. Survey results will also be shared with other local organizations that serve the LGBT community, so that they may similarly improve
April 17, 2013 their services and increase the likelihood of obtaining funding. The intended long-term outcome of the survey is an increase in local LGBT-specific health and wellness programs and services, resulting in a healthier Coachella Valley. The survey is open to any adult that lives in the Coachella Valley for 30 days or more per year—including heterosexual adults who do not identify as part of the LGBT community. The survey covers many health and wellness related topics, such as mental health, social support, risky health behaviors, mobility, and the availability of culturallyappropriate health services for the LGBT community. All data
is completely anonymous— names, addresses, or phone numbers are not collected, so participants can feel free to share openly. The survey typically takes about 20 minutes to complete, and can be found online at www.SurveyMonkey.com/s/ LGBT_Health. The Center, the Desert Healthcare District, and HARC all strongly encourage everyone to take 20 minutes out of their day to share their experiences and contribute to this important knowledge base. Why Should We live longer? I would like to share with you in this “Living Longer” column some very short and thoughtful letters from prominent world leaders, athletes, artists and activists. These letters were written for a book titled “The Most Important Thing I Know.” In offering their insight into the thoughts that helped them succeed, these letters may help us clarify the purpose of our own lives and answer the question raised by the headline of this column, “Why Should We Live Longer?” From poet Maya Angelou: “My grandmother told me that every good thing I do helps some human being in the world. I believed her fifty years ago and I still do.” From radio talk show host Laura Schlesinger, “The most important thing I know (and do) is that I am my kid’s mom.” From basketball great Earvin “Magic” Johnson: “Excellence is not a destination
you arrive at. It is the benchmark for your journey.” From tennis champion Martina Navratilova: “Katherine Hepburn once told me, ‘It’s not what you do in life, it’s what you finish.’ But many people don’t even start because they are afraid of failure. To me the only failure is when you don’t even try. So set you path, be brave, do your best and smile, because you are doing all of the above.” From four-star General and former Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin L. Powell: “You have achieved excellence as a leader when people will follow you anywhere, if only out of curiousity.” From journalist Pierre Salinger and former press secretary to President John F. Kennedy: “In order to reach excellence around the world with so many fragile areas, we need world leaders to understand history. So many don’t. History is critical to learn how to solve difficult worldwide problems.”

From astronaut Buzz Aldrin, one of the first men to step on the moon: “No dream is too high for those with their eyes in the sky.” From cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts: “I have always been grateful for the tolerance my parents showed for the ambition I had for a strange profession. Not many young people have the obsession to draw a comic strip, and it was a difficult ambition to understand, but they never tried to discourage me, or point me in a different direction.” From former First Lady Rosalynn Carter: “Do what you can to show you care about other people and you will make our world a better place.” From Peter Vidmar, Olympic Gold Medalist: “Some of my fondest memories in sport were a result of failure, injuries, setbacks or mistakes. I learned far more about myself and gained more character in those difficult times that I ever did when success came easily.” From Stephen R. Covey, author and leadership authority, “Humility is the mother of all virtues, courage the father, integrity the child and wisdom the grandchild.” From journalist Barbara Walters: “To excel is to reach your own highest dream. But you must also help others, where and when you can, to reach theirs. Personal gain is empty if you do not feel you have positively touched another’s life.” From Nelson Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa: “The real heroes are men and women who are friends of the poorest of the poor.” From Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest: “Aim high! There is little virtue in easy victory. If you are completely confident of success on a big challenge – then why start? – maybe you should be trying something more difficult. But being sensible is important too. There are two aspects to achievement – reaching your goal and getting safely back home again. One is incomplete without the other!” From Helen Gurley Brown, founder of Cosmopolitan Magazine, “You don’t have to think too much about ‘excellence’ – that sounds kind of fancy. Just do the work in front of you –
grubby as it seems at the time – the very best you can and it will probably lead to excellence.” From Dolly Parton, singer and actor: “If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are an excellent leader.” From actor Michael J. Fox: “The only thing that separates anyone of us from excellence is fear, and the opposite of fear is faith. I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence I can reach for, perfection is God’s business.” From George Harrison, musician and Beatle,:“Man becomes that which he gazes upon.” Art Kunkin is the 85-year young journalist who founded the alternative weekly newspaper, The Los Angeles Free Press in 1964 and later became president of the Philosophical Research Society of Los Angeles. the DiSneylanD MeMorial orGy By paul Krassner When Walt Disney died in December 1966. There were rumors that hiss body had been frozen, although it was actually cremated. Somehow I had expected Mickey and Donald Duck and all the rest of the gang to attend the funeral, with Goofy delivering a eulogy and the Seven Dwarves serving as pallbearers. After his death, as a personal pilgrimage, I thought it would be appropriate to visit Disneyland. I went with three friends, one a lawyer whose dog jumped into the car as we were leaving his home. We ate marijuana brownies for the occasion. Dogs were not allowed in Disneyland. In fact, male humans with long hair or beards or other stereotypical hippie accouterments were not allowed in. The Beatles, who were more popular than Christ, would not have been permitted to enter Disneyland – unless they were performing there. Indeed, Jesus
himself would not have been permitted to enter Disneyland – unless he was performing there. We bluffed our way into Disneyland by convincing a ticket-taker that the manager had given us permission earlier on the telephone inasmuch as the dog was needed to guide my friend with the impaired eyesight. Inside, we continued to fake it, explaining that the dog had already been cleared by the ticket-taker. After lunch, a large man with a small walkie-talkie approached us with the choice of putting the dog in the Disneyland kennel or leaving the place altogether. My friend explained how this exception to their rule had been arranged two weeks ago, and he asked to speak to “the chief of security.” “I am the chief of security.” “Ah, just the man I want to see.” Okay, then, if we had to leave, were we not entitled to a full refund? Yes, we were. So, while the others waited at the gate, I was escorted to a building called City Hall. There, a woman was requesting that her lost child be paged over the loudspeaker, but she was refused because it wasn’t considered an emergency. I didn’t wish anyone to think that I wanted them only for their money, so I asked if there had been any special ceremony when Walt Disney died “No, we kept the park open. We felt that Mr. Disney would have wanted it that way.” “Well, wasn’t there any official recognition of his passing?” “We did fly the flag at halfmast for the rest of the month.” Disney stock rose one point the day after his death and continued to ascend. The company earned $100 million the next year, and even though Disney was dead, Mickey Mouse would continue to bask in his own immortality. Disney’s death occurred a few years after Time magazine’s famous “God Is Dead” cover, and it struck me that Disney had indeed served as the Creatorof Mickey, Donald Duck, Goofy -- that whole stable of imaginary characters who were now mourning in a state of suspended animation. Disney had been their Intelligent Designer, and he had repressed all their baser instincts, but since he had departed they could finally shed their cumulative inhibitions and participate together in an unspeakable Roman binge, to signify the crumbling of an empire. I assigned Mad magazine artist Wally Wood to create -- as a black-and-white center-spread for my magazine The Realist which then became a popular poster – the infamous Disneyland Memorial Orgy. (A digitally colored edition of the original poster became available in 2005 at paulkrassner.com.) Anyway, still thoroughly stoned, we left Disneyland to fend for itself.

INDIO – The Coachella Valley Music & Art Festival 2013 arrived for its first weekend Apr. 12-14 with a lot of anticipation by fans, artists, vendors and residents throughout the Coachella Valley. Tickets sold out within hours of going on sale and every hotel room across the Valley was booked well in advance. Concerts like Coachella and Stagecoach have become a big camping and RV experience with many festival-goers returning year after year with their barbecues, icefilled coolers and umbrellas ready for some fun in the desert sun. This year’s weekend one proved to be no exception to past festivals where the crowd estimate reached up to 90,000, topping last year’s weekend one totals of 84,957. This included 80,726 tickets sold and 4,075 complimentary tickets with 156 Media Credentials in 2012, according to information provided to the Indio Planning Commission by the Development Management Group, Inc., in an Economic Impact Analysis (EIA) completed for Goldenvoice, LLC, promoters of the three weekend festivals. First time festival-goers were very excited by the immense space of concert venue on the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio. There are six stages erected for the bands to perform around an open standing audience area. Each
stage offers diverse music genres for every taste. Everywhere you go there is music coming from one stage or the next with up to 100 groups performing. Fans meandered around the festival munching of tasty food and chilled beverages from the vendors. They could bring in an empty water bottle and get them filled at convenient water stations. There is a handy charging station for cell phones and computers with artwork strategically placed throughout the grounds. There is a ferris wheel for those wanting an extra thrill. Fans enjoyed getting close to the stage while people in the back could see the bands well watching two large video screens erected. The stages were filled with performers all day long, so there wasn’t a minute of time wasted on silence. And what fans seemed to enjoy most was a designated place for getting autographs and meeting the artists up close. Friday’s performers started at noon with the last band going on stage at midnight. Bands included: the Blur, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tegan and Sara, Jurassic 5 and more. Get you sunscreen out because weekend number two is sure to be packed with the same energy and excitement.

Weekend One Behind Us Photo by Dusty Knapp
Story by Jackie Devereaux photos by pat Krause and Dusty Knapp INDIO –Weekend number one of Coachella Fest 2013 is over and we’re still collecting stories and images from several pre- and postCoachella Fest parties across the Valley. One of the biggest kickoff parties was the H & M Loves Music Pool Party held on Saturday, Apr. 13 at the lavish estate of Merv Griffin. This was an invitation-only party requiring special wristbands that were inspected at three check points before entering the party. Security was tight to protect the 240 VIPs and celebrities, and no gate crashers were tolerated. Some of the party-goers only attended the pre and post parties, never making it into the concert area itself. One couple, who asked to remain anonymous, said they had attended five parties within a 24-
hour period. Celebrities attending this event included: Diane Kruger of “The Host,” Sophia Bush of “One Tree Hill,” Justin Chatwin of “Shameless,” Joshua Jackson of “Fringe” and Darren Criss of “Glee.”
Entertainment was provided by Singer Santigold. Attendees enjoyed the day playing ping pong, touring the private pond in paddle boats or just lounging around the grass on huge pillows eating pizza, sandwiches, cotton candy and ice cream bars. It’s no wonder that people from all over the world flock to the Coachella Valley during the month of April. More private parties are scheduled for the rest of Coachella Fest with some at local hot spot hotels. For those who want to know: The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs is holding parties each day through Sunday, Apr. 21. No promises that you’ll get in, but it’s a good place to get the party going.

They will also get a sneak peek, with Peter Jackson, of “The Hobbit:The Desolation of Smaug” which is the second installment in the “Hobbit” trilogy. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is the story of Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, who--along with Wizard

fab fiGS: Sweet DreaMS Do coMe true By Ani minasian It started with a craving, a deep longing to once again taste that Spanish traditional treat of luscious dried figs filled with smooth chocolate ganache. Those mild, subtle flavors and the contrasting textures all in one mouthful… The memory was haunting her andwouldn’t go away. She had been a loyal fan of a Seattle chocolatier’s seasonal offering of chocolatefilled figs, but after resettling here in the Coachella Valley, there was a nagging hole where those figs used to be. It was that yearning that launched foodie and passionate home cook Heidi Eplinginto a year-long exploration to develop what would eventually become her Fab Figs: juicy Calimyrna and Black Mission figs from Central California filled with a dark or white chocolate ganache (a soft but rich mix of chocolate, cream and port). As she experimented in her Palm Springskitchenwith variations of her recipe, she filled the stockings (and stomachs)of friends and family with her creations. Finally, with the encouragement of a grateful friend and fan of her figs, Heidi began considering the feasibility of marketing and selling the confections as a business. One year and two months after taking the initial leap, Fab Figs is a hit, and Heidi’s day job is a thing of the past. While business is booming, Epling is still hand-making each Fab Fig herself (in a commercial kitchen now), from piping her ganache into each pitted fig, to foil-wrapping and packaging them in retail-ready boxes and bags. (How does she do
palate pleasers it? She’s extremely efficient--her record is up to 300 figs a day!) She personally handles all sales at local fairs in Palm Springs and online sales on her website. Shehas also run multiple holiday sales events with sell-out success on Fab.com, a designer-to-consumer e-commerce site. And she’s not resting on any laurels either, as she continues experimenting with new flavors and products (her ganache recipe is taking on two new flavors: dark chocolate espresso and white chocolate amaretto). Already she has encountered the challenge of working with seasonal ingredients. The availability
April 17, 2013
of the figs varies with the farmers’ annual harvest, and without advance contracts with the suppliers, Epling faces the risk of running out of her jumbo Calimyrna dried figs. She has managed to dodgethat bullet by introducing new products using Sierra and Black Mission figs, and will be prepared next year for the increasing demand for her products. Nevertheless, Epling could not be happier. She has left behind a successful career in event and tour management yet she has never felt more in her element. She loves the creativity of developing products as well as their packaging (she designed the logo herself) and hints at new
products to be unveiled soon. All the while, she is beaming—and why not? She’s living the sweetest version of the American dream. Fab Figs are now available at the Palm Springs Visitor Center, and at discounted rates on Thursday nights at VillageFest(Downtown Palm Springs) and Saturdays at the Open Air Market (adjacent to the Spa Resort Casino). Online purchases can be made at fabfigs.com. ~Ani Minasian is a freelance writer based in Palm Springs who also publishes a blog dedicated to chocoholics and the object of their obsession: chocoholicscentral. blogspot.com.~

Itchy Painful Smelly Ears – possible fix for the pain of it all (part two)
The microscopic presence of bacteria and yeast can easily be determined by taking a swab of the ear canal. Topical ear drops or ointments routinely prescribed are basically combo cocktails of antibiotics (to kill bacteria), antifungals (to kill yeast), and antiinflammatory drugs like cortisone (necessary to dampen inflammation, stop the itch and reduce pain). I rely on several Zymox Otic ® products made by PKB Animal Health. This unique drug-free formulation contains highly effective enzymes that are both antibacterial

and antifungal. Zymox products work best in a “dirty” environment – NO pre-cleaning is required. For ongoing control and prevention of flare-ups, use daily for 7–14 days, then apply to affected ear(s) 3 times per week for maintenance.
Systemic antibiotics (given by mouth or injection) are surely indicated if the eardrum is ruptured – most of the time they are not needed, but remain mysteriously prescribed. Systemic anti-inflammatories such as corticosteroids are often employed in the first week or two of a flare-up, and then tapered off. Okay, now think itchy dogs. Environmental allergies (referred to as atopy – the human equivalent of hay fever) carry a presumptive diagnosis when symptoms look like this itchy trio: 1) excessive paw licking; 2) red bellies and armpits; 3) hot inflamed ears. When patients
with red ears show up with additional skin zones (paws, belly, and armpits) affected by inflammation and hair loss, a broader treatment plan beyond topical ear meds is called for. Low dose oral corticosteroids may need to be part of the treatment plan during high allergy seasons. Also helpful in these patients is frequent bathing with antibacterial and antifungal shampoos followed with a leave-on lotion that contains cortisone – I like ResiCORT ® by Virbac. Less common itchy ear culprits are food sensitivities. Possible food allergies fall under suspicion when your dog shows year around itchiness – as opposed to an intermittent seasonal pattern like hay fever. When food allergy pops up on my list of possibilities, a selective food trial begins for the next 6–8 weeks. Typically, a new protein source (not commonly found in pet foods) is chosen, like duck, rabbit, venison, or kangaroo. This diet must also be grain-free, so potatoes are often added. And no treats! Home cooked veggies or baby carrots will have to do for all you treat addicts. Vet alert: blood allergy tests have proven to be unreliable for the detection of food allergies – don’t waste your money. Blood testing can, however, confirm the diagnosis of an environmental allergic response (atopy) to plants, pollen, dust mites, fleas and other external factors. In general practice, a thorough examination alone will often confirm the diagnosis of atopy and treatment can begin. Based on my experience, costly allergy testing is needed for the sole purpose of desensitization and should fall into the trained hands of dermatologists, not your vet. Failure to properly treat smoldering ear inflammation will result in progressive trauma that could rupture the eardrum and or narrowing of the ear canal, making any treatment more difficult and less successful. The Cocker Spaniel and similar floppy eared breeds have the highest incidence of these problems requiring surgical intervention in cases where patients suffer from advanced disease beyond the reach of medications. Don’t wait – get help now to put out this inflammatory inferno! Paula Terifaj DVM is owner of the DogSpa Resort & Wellness Center in Desert Hot Springs. Kitty Boy by Kitty Pallesen Kitty Boy was a wild cat who lived and survived on his own for 8 years. His territory included several ranches with open desert in between. He miraculously traversed back and forth. After working around lions and tigers, I appreciated his hunting and survival skills, considering he was not King of the Jungle here, but just a skinny little kitty cat surviving in the land of coyotes and a harsh environment. The neighbors had their own names for him, but he did not belong to any of us. He belonged to himself. After many years, he succumbed to my offer of food and milk. He would wait and meow for his breakfast in the morning, but I was never able to touch him. During the cold, rainy winter, I propped the shed door open and placed his food, water, and a bed inside where it was dry. I considered it an honor that he trusted me. Many times he would disappear for several days. I was always worrying if he was OK. He had been gone for over a week when a neighbor called saying that “Sylvester” was running underneath the oleanders dragging a trap caught on his foot. Could I come help catch him? We tried over an hour. All the while, he was dragging a trap on his little paw that was bigger than him and weighed more than him. We called more neighbors for help and were finally able to catch him and rush him to the vet. The news was not good. All of the bones were broken with only tendons holding his foot on. Gangrene had set in, spreading up his leg. He needed his whole leg amputated with much care afterwards. After a heartfelt neighborhood talk, the only thing we could do for him was mercifully put him down. At one point, I had been lying on my belly under a bush with my face only two feet from his face. I started meowing like when I first saw him in the morning, and he was meowing
back like he always did. With tears streaming down my cheeks, I begged him to let me help him.
He just stared at me, not knowing how to traverse those two feet – that path just did not exist in his wild cat mind. He did the only thing he knew how to do, which was run to save his life, dragging that heavy iron trap the whole way. The only time I got to hold him in my arms was right before I laid him in his grave as we all gathered around to grieve our loss and celebrate his magnificent cat spirit. “Saving one dog’s life won’t change the world, but it does change the world for that one dog!” Excerpted from www. You’re somewhat shy and although it’s important to project a strong image you prefer to work quietly behind the scenes – doing your best work. You’re a leader, one who illuminates for humanity new realities to be grasped. Like the new economy of the new Sharing Society. You spend days acquiring new knowledge creating a new type of leadership.
Sun enters Taurus this Friday. Taurus, anchoring into the world the fiery ideas of Aries, is a beam of light emerging from the point of Light in Aries, creating a pathway of Light for humanity. Taurus, foremost Earth sign, inspires stability and the fine Art of Living. Appropriately this Monday is International Earth Day. VIRGO: There’s a great amount of knowledge within you. It’s important not to feel you have more
than others. Everyone has a specific amount of knowledge. That knowledge belongs to them. You have knowledge that belongs to you, too. It’s good to share your knowledge with those who are seeking and asking for information and direction. When you use your knowledge with tolerance and love, the heavenly stars all line up and everyone’s spiritual essence emerges.
LIBRA: You have a great magnetic power. Sometimes you’re not aware of this. It has to do with the depth of your feelings - powerful, deep and intense. You’re interested in what lies hidden, what is unexplored and off-limits. You’re curious about all levels of relationship. Because, always, Librans are learning how to be in relationship. Sometimes you’re presented with great tests. You pass them, adjusting life to a higher level, make a deeper commitment, relinquish the past and know that love is all there is. Lots of work. SCORPIO: You’ll be asked to negotiate several things in your life while appreciating on a deeper level those close to you. Although very sensitive to being left out, you never show it. For your own sense of harmony It’s important to work a bit more with others and not be so solitary. You’ll feel more successful it you work more in partnership. Your natural charm and kind nature, not often seen, will emerge. By the way, whatever it is, you’ll win. SAGITTARIUS: It’s important for you to be noticed for the unique and special abilities and many levels of creativity you possess. Sometimes you hide under a shell, not recognizing the quality and goodness of your gifts. So many times you graciously share with others with no thought of return. You have a hidden flair for drama and ability to for fun and to play. This too is often hidden. Show more your nourisher self. CAPRICORN: I had a dream about Capricorns last night. Your were pulled between two realities – the voice of the self and that of others. The dream said to follow your own direction, your own set of values, hopes, wishes and dreams. To not seek what others say think to and of you. To direct your inner restlessness into creative expression, leadership and multiple forms of art. This is what creates the path of happiness. Children, family, heritage and traditions are important for those you love. AQUARIUS: You need a change of environments, people, work and scenery. To keep up with your agile mind. You’re able to adapt to many environments. However, a requirement for you is the to communicate what you know and have learned. You’re a teacher. You’re also curious and think others are, too. But not everyone is curious. It takes intelligence to be curious. You’re excellent at all endeavors. For now though, tend to your money very carefully. PISCES: In recent years you’ve realized a need for safety and security. You’re developed constancy and consistency. You never make promises, as you never want to disappoint. Usually Pisces is only able to think about survival. But now a conscious value system has been developing. You’re thinking about and building toward the future. You’re sensible and competent. Most people don’t know this about you. But we do. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
