Remembering Barbara Bush A political dynasty matriarch, wife of the 41st US President and mother of the 43rd President of the United States of America. By Desert Star Staff Barbara Pierce Bush, the wife of one US president and the mother of another, has passed away at the age of 92, according to a statement from her family. Barbara and her future husband George Herbert Walker Bush met in 1941 and married in 1945. They were married for 72 years, the longest marriage of any first couple in US history.

She was Second Lady of the US from 1981 to 1989, and then First Lady between 1989 and 1993. During her time in the White House, she famously established the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Eight years after her husband lost his re-election bid, Barbara Bush was helping their son George Walker Bush settle into the White House,

the first son to follow his father into the presidency since John Quincy Adams did so in 1825. “Our souls are settled because we know hers was,” George W. Bush said on Tuesday evening, describing his mother as someone who “brought levity, love, and literacy to millions.” Barbara Bush was described by many who knew her as a woman of

strong character. On Sunday, she announced she would not seek additional medical care after several stints in hospital, leading to premature reports of her passing. In 1988, Barbara Bush was the first wife of a candidate to address a Republican party convention that nominated her husband. The Bushes had six children, including George W, who

served as governor of Texas and was a two-term president, and John Ellis ‘Jeb’ Bush, who was governor of Florida and ran for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016. Barbara Bush will be “long remembered for her strong devotion to country and family, both of which she served unfailingly well,” President Donald Trump said in a statement.

TN Observes First-Ever Black Maternal Health Week

examines the rising mortality rate of black mothers. Perritt says some of the institutional racism problems are hard to pinpoint and address within the medical profession. “When we talk about quality of care, we know that health-care professionals are more likely to make inaccurate assumptions about the ability of black women to utilize health information” says Perritt. “And this reduces the quality of care black women receive, and puts our lives and health at risk.” Tennis star Serena Williams is speaking publicly about her experience with having her daughter and the medical complications that resulted. In published reports, she had to advocate for a CT scan to determine she had blood clots as a result of delivery.

By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Black women are three to four times more likely to die during childbirth than white

women. It’s just one startling statistic that has prompted the creation of the nation’s first “Black Maternal Health Week,” which started on Wednesday.

A group known as the Black Mamas Matter Alliance has launched a nationwide campaign to help address disparities in

health care, resources and socioeconomic factors. Obstetrician and fellow with Physicians for Reproductive Health, Dr. Jamila Perritt cites examples such as lack of access to prenatal care in predominantly black communities, and a lack of job and childcare flexibility to attend doctor’s appointments. “Black women often bear the brunt of these disparities,” says Perritt. “What we know is that it’s not race, in and of itself, that makes a difference. It’s structural and institutional and historical racism that has the impact.” According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, black infants die at a rate more than twice as high as white infants. On Monday, Healthy and Free Tennessee hosts a documentary screening in Nashville. “Death by Delivery”

By Max Rodriguez The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was not the only party in town over the weekend, popup private parties went on day and night around the desert, and some residents said they got no sleep because of the loud music. A resident of Mountain Vista Country Club in La Quinta said the part was nowhere near sight, but she felt as if the music was right next door, she does not want her name published. “So loud at 2 AM my windows were rattling and my windows were rattling so loud my dog was barking,” the La Quinta resident said. “I called the police again, the Indio police at 3:30 and I was told they couldn’t respond to the party because they had an accident.” The Indio Police

Department’s Sergeant Dan Marshall confirmed that police officers were busy responding to a bus versus light pole crash near the Indio Fairgrounds early Sunday morning. Still, the resident said the loud music continued to creep inside her home until 5 AM. The City of La Quinta Planning Manager, Gabriel Perez said they approved a party to go until four in the morning, but the site was inspected before they permitted the private event. Perez said, “It is in a large estate of the city, so it is not surrounded by a lot of single family residential and so the impacts are relatively low.” He said people who live 500 feet from a private party are notified by city staff, but they still depend on the feedback of the community to learn about issues.

He said, “We usually don’t know loud the event if going to be until the event happens, so we either get a complaint.” But for a La Quita resident, she sees no point in calling 9-1-1 for a non-emergency, instead

she wants an open-line of communication to voice concerns come festival season. She said, “There should be a resident hot-line that we can call and make a complaint about a party and

it could be handled, period.” Sergeant Dan Marshall said they prioritized calls that involved people in possible danger, but they are still looking into the noise complaints they received all weekend-long. Source KMIR

Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol. Four people, all suffering major injuries, were hospitalized as a result of the crash, said Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department. The cause of the crash, which shut down the eastbound lanes for nearly three hours, was under investigation, but alcohol and drugs did not appear to be contributing factors, according to CHP Officer Mike Radford. He said a 2002 Acura CL driven by 19-year-old Desert Hot Springs resident Raymond Vasquez and a 2004 Suzuki

motorcycle driven by Aaron Coates, 34, of Yucca Valley, collided, and the rider was thrown from the two-wheeler. The impact of the crash sent the Acura into the center divider guardrail, and the sedan was then struck by a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2013 Freightliner big rig, Radford said. Vasquez, Coates and unnamed passengers in the Acura and the Silverado were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The Chevrolet driver suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized, Radford said. Source KMIR

By Desert Star Staff “Will you marry me?” Be sure to pair these four little words with the perfect engagement ring. While there’s a bit of a learning curve when it comes to selecting the right diamond, the most important thing you can do is find a piece both you and your significant other will love. That said, don’t let the business of choosing an engagement ring be a source of stress at this exciting time in your life. With a bit of knowledge, you can make the right selection with confidence. Consider the following. • Consult with the leading authority: Be sure your diamond is Gemological Institute of America (GIA)certified. Established in 1931, GIA is the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones and pearls. A public benefit, nonprofit institute, GIA is the leading source of knowledge, standards and education in gems and jewelry. • Four Cs: Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so make your decision based on what looks most beautiful to you, however, knowing more about the four Cs – that is the cut, color, clarity and carat – of a diamond, can help you make a selection wisely. Created by the GIA, the four Cs are the global standard for assessing the quality of diamonds, allowing you to compare one diamond to another, which is extremely helpful in determining whether you are getting a fair price. The cut is what gives a diamond its brilliance and sparkle, so this is an important factor. As far as color is concerned, the less color the

better -- tinting is indicative of a lower quality diamond. Clarity refers to a diamond’s relative flawlessness -- blemishes are a mark against a diamond. Lastly, carat measures the weight of the diamond. Be sure to view the GIA grading report specifying the exact quality of an individual diamond when making a decision. • Design your own engagement ring with the help of an expert: An engagement ring is one of the most meaningful items you will ever purchase. So, why opt for the style everyone else is wearing? Consider working with a jeweler that specializes in bespoke engagement rings and quality diamonds, such as Enchanted Diamonds. With experience spanning generations, the family-owned and operated jeweler will work with you to custom create a ring for your unique specifications. “You’re not just buying another mass-

produced commodity, you’re commissioning a work of art,” says Joshua Niamehr, founder and CEO of Enchanted Diamonds. • Shop online: Gaining access to a large selection of diamonds can be difficult when shopping at a brick-and-mortar store close to home. Consider shopping online for access to a larger and better selection of diamonds, including those

found in New York City’s worldrenowned diamond district. Doing so will give you a greater opportunity to find the perfect fit for your unique needs, style and budget without ever having to leave your home. Before getting down on one knee, do your research. There’s a perfect engagement ring for every couple. Finding it just requires a little bit of legwork. StatePoint

By Pamela Price The evening of April 12th was a sweeping success for the first-ever Spring edition of the Meet the Galen event held at the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert. The setting was the picture perfect four-acre Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden where well over 300 guests enjoyed the early evening reception now in its sixth year. Event sponsors were Faye Sarkowsky, Helene V. Galen, Jamie Kabler and Donna MacMillan. The Desert Chic theme was inspired

by event chairs Susan Stein and Paula Larsen. According to Arline Amick Palm Springs Art Museum’s Director of Audience Engagement and Communications “between the music festivals and other major events, April is one of the busiest months of the political season. The Museum is the cultural hub of the valley, so we’re looking forward to tapping into that energy and attracting new members.” She was on target with a bevy of art enthusiasts decked out in

designer spirited fashions. Among guests mingling in the in the sculpture garden in their “most fashion-forward ensembles,” was Mitch Blumberg in a cool sports coat worthy of framing. Waiting patiently in line for her photo to be snapped inside a shiny silver Airstream trailer was Rene Glickman. Nearby, guests dined on well-dressed sliders, Mediterranean lavosh and shrimp eclairs with lemon dill. Local artist Bernard Hoyes mentioned his latest exhibit at the Gallery at River at

Rancho Mirage. Never one to miss an art-inspired party was Barbara Paget with husband Bob, of Chicago and Rancho Mirage. DJ Austin Del Rio ( aka 80R) music greeted guests as they arrived at Saks Fifth Avenue lured ladies to their tented cosmetic studio with gift bags and individual 20-minute make up demonstrations. The latest good news from the Palm Springs Art Museum is their ‘turn-key’ private viewing reception program in progress during the run of their blockbuster exhibition

“Andy Warhol: Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation” ideal for ‘ your company or preferred clients.’ Jennifer Snowden at the Museum has the details on how to create this once in a lifetime experience before the exhibit closes on May 28th. ( J. Snowdon@psmuseum.org). The Palm Springs Art Museum is the most significant cultural institution in the Coachella Valley and includes three locations in Palm Springs and Palm Desert.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 7th Annual AmDocs, American Documentary Film Festival, was held on April 6th thru the 14th. The Palm Springs Cultural Center Program was the sponsor. There were over 170 films shown. This festival has grown so much over the course of the seven years that they had to add another feature. They told AmDocs Latino where they showed Spanish language films. The Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City hosted this event where they showed nearly 30 Latino documentary films on April 13th and 4th.

Films shown ran the gamut of every theme from Environmental issues to political and social concerns. AmDocs pushes the boundaries where they determine how films are defined. Teddy Grouya, AmDocs Film Festival Director, said because of the ever-changing landscape, we need to embrace the arts and our sense of humanity. Films change the way we look thru awareness and contribution to society. Grouya said he hoped that people come away with a new understanding. He hoped that people would gain a new insight thru the

audience and filmmakers sharing of ideas and vision during the panel discussions. The Festival held about a dozen filmmaker panels The filmmakers share a lifelong interest in making films, and These people have diverse careers in the industry as consultants, editors of publications. Business leaders, actress, Tech specialists, producers and more. These panels were held to teach and to learn from one another. They gave a new perspective on the Documentary world of film. Several Celebrities made an appearance and held

Q&As for the public. Awards were given to some of these celebrities. The Rozene Supple Humanitarian Award went to George Takei, who is best known for his character Sulu in the Star Trek Series. The, Seeing The Bigger Picture Award, was given to actor Shea LeBeouf, and filmmakers Nastja Ronkko and Luke Turner for their film, Stakemeanywhere. Actress Sunny Thompson arrived for her movie, Becoming Marilyn Monroe. The closing night screening, Poisoning Paradise, was a film by Keely Brosnan and was accompanied by her husband

actor Pierce Brosnan. This film was about the test sites in Hawaii that are poisoning the area where residents live nearby, and school children exposed to these dangerous chemicals. Big Companies and the Hawaiian government are turning a blind eye in the race for riches by these companies. It is a wake-up call for all the Earth as it is happening all over our planet with very little control over the use of pesticides and other chemicals. People need to make these companies accountable for their actions by getting involved.

Disney-Pixar’s ‘COCO’ Is Now Out on DVD

Disney-Pixar’s animated “Coco” is the story of a 12-year- old boy named Miguel Rivera (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) who loves music and playing his guitar, but music has been entirely removed from the family due to an unfortunate event that happened long before young Miguel was born. Miguel loves his family, who are shoemakers, and he is especially close to his great-grandmother Coco, but he also loves playing music, which is forbidden. The story begins on Dia de los Muertos, the day of the

dead, a time when Mexican families make an altar where they place photos of dead relatives and loved ones along with food for them to enjoy. It is also the day when the town is holding a talent show and Miguel is determined to enter and perform. His plans are dashed when his overly domineering grandmother runs after him and brings him home. She then smashes his guitar to bits in an attempt to stop him from playing music ever again. Undaunted, he manages to sneak away and go back into town. But now he has

no instrument to play, so the young boy tries to borrow a guitar from someone in the crowd with no luck. At this point he goes to the tomb of his idol, singing movie star Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). He stealthily enters, then climbs up and takes Ernesto’s guitar off the wall. Unfortunately when he strums a few notes to test it out, an officer arrives on the scene and the boy runs off frantically in the opposite direction. As souls are crossing over into the land of the living he finds himself headed for the underworld accompanied

by his friend, a street mutt named Dante. Together they enter the land of the dead. Once there the young boy meets his long gone ancestors who will help him find his way back home only if he promises to give up music for the rest of his life. As he tries to return without that curse he meets a streetwise skeleton named Hector (Gael Garcia) who is also determined to re-enter the land of the living to restore his legacy so that he will not be forgotten forever. The two join forces and in the process they meet movie idol

The film is rated PG13 for thematic elements, but most kids will find the ghoulish touches interesting and fun. Lead Poisoning Continues to Plague Parts of California By Desert Star Staff OAKLAND, Calif. — The issue of childhood lead poisoning is getting fresh attention after the recent release of an investigative series by KALW Radio in San Francisco. Reuters data shows about 2 percent of California’s children have high rates of lead in their blood - consistent with the national average. But parts of Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles are hotspots. And

in one ZIP code in Fresno, more than 13 percent of blood tests on kids younger than six showed high levels of lead. The problem in California has been traced mostly to contact with lead paint in houses built before 1978, when it was banned. Marissa Ortega-Welch, who reported the story with colleague Angela Johnston, said the housing crunch is making the problem worse. “When you find out that

your house is making your kids sick, you then have to decide between affordable housing or safe housing, right?” Ortega-Welch said. “And so in places where we’re having this housing crisis, it can be really hard for families to find another place to live.” Data from the California Department of Public Health shows that as of 2014, the state had almost 9,000 youths under age 21 with high lead levels in their blood, and

another 1,300 had severe lead poisoning - the lion’s share younger than six. Longterm lead poisoning can lead to learning disabilities and behavioral issues. Ortega-Welch said if your house has lead paint, you can contain it with regular home maintenance. “Every couple of years, you want to make sure that you’re painting over any places where the paint is peeling,” she said. “Because even if fresh,

new, non-lead paint peels, it reveals the older layers of lead paint underneath, and that’s what children are ingesting.” All children on public assistance are tested for lead in California. Last year lawmakers in Sacramento decided against a proposal to require lead testing for all children. A few California cities do send inspectors to visually check for hazards before new tenants come in. But they do not routinely test the paint for lead.
