Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Begin Filming in CV ‘A Star is Born’ filming took place on Tuesday, April 18 -19

By KMIR News Staff Coachella Valley Region - Filming has begun in the Coachella Valley for a remake of ``A Star is Born,’’ starring Lady Gaga -- fresh off a Saturday night headlining performance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival -- and Bradley Cooper, who will also direct. A photograph of the pair released Monday depicts them performing on stage at what appears to be a country music concert. Messages sent to Coachella festivalgoers

through the official Coachella app invited them to show up at the Empire Polo Grounds Tuesday and Wednesday. They were instructed to dress in country music attire to be part of the ``audience’’ during the filmed concert. The latest iteration of ``A Star is Born’’ has Cooper portraying Jackson Maine, ``a country music star who is on the brink of decline when he discovers a talented unknown named Ally,’’ according to Warner Bros. ``As the two begin a passionate love affair, Jack

coaxes Ally into the spotlight, catapulting her to stardom. But as Ally’s career quickly eclipses his own, Jack finds it increasingly hard to handle his fading glory,’’ according to the studio’s synopsis of the plot. The movie, which also stars Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliott, marks Cooper’s directorial debut. Gaga, who is filming in between her weekend sets at the Coachella festival, also wrote original songs for the movie, which is currently slated for release on Sept. 28, 2018. Source: KMIR

N. Korea threatens to ‘reduce US to ashes’

By Desert Star Staff North Korean state media has warned Washington of a “super-mighty pre-emptive strike” which would “reduce the US to ashes.” It comes after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington is looking to pressure Pyongyang over its nuclear program.

sponsorship of terrorism as well as the other ways in which we can bring pressure on the regime in Pyongyang to re-engage with us, but re-engage with us on a different footing than past talks have been held,” he told reporters on Wednesday. Tillerson wasn’t the only Trump-appointed US official making remarks about North Korea on Wednesday. Speaking from the ‘USS Ronald Reagan’ in Japan, Vice President Mike Pence vowed an “overwhelming and effective” response to any potential attacks from Pyongyang, stressing that the “sword stands ready.” Defense Secretary “In the case of our superruling Workers’ Party, wrote on mighty preemptive strike being Thursday, as quoted by Reuters. South Korea’s Defense Ministry also confirmed on Thursday that the US and South Korean Air Forces are conducting an annual training exercise – codenamed Max Thunder – until April 28. “We are conducting a practical and more intensive exercise than ever,” South Korean pilot Colonel Lee Bumchul told reporters. “Through this exercise, I am sure we can deter war and remove our enemy’s intention to provoke us.” The Thursday threat by North Korean state media come after Pyongyang performed a music show to mark the birth of former leader Kim Ilsung, which included a video that appeared to show North Korea striking the US with a devastating missile launch. North Korea tried and failed to launch a ballistic missile last Saturday, with the weapon reportedly blowing up almost immediately after launch.

By Desert Star Staff Measles have staged a comeback in Europe, with Italy seeing an almost a twofold increase in cases of the potentially lethal virus in just one year. It has prompted the US to issues a warning to citizens traveling to some European states. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are warning travelers to Italy, Belgium and Germany of a measles outbreak there.“What can travelers do to protect themselves? Get a measles vaccine or make sure you have already been vaccinated. Wash your hands often. Avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes,” a notice for travelers to Belgium states. On Wednesday, the Italian Health Ministry said there were 1,473 reported cases of measles in the country between January 1 and April 9 this year, compared to 866 cases in 2016, according to Wired Italy. Eighty-eight percent of the treated patients were not previously vaccinated. Vaccination against measles is not mandatory in Italy currently covers about 85 percent of the population, while the World Health Organization (WHO) says 95 percent coverage is needed to keep epidemics at bay. “What is currently going on

in Italy can be technically defined as an epidemic, an event that occurs when the number of reported cases exceeds the number of expected cases at a certain point of time in a certain region,” Pier Luigi Lopalco, a professor of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine at the University of Pisa, said. In 1980, before widespread vaccination, measles caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year, according to WHO estimates. Another country that has suffered from a decline in measles vaccination is the UK, with 56 measles cases reported in England and Wales in 1998 but 547 cases in 2016. In 2015 there were about 367 deaths from measles every day around the world. California governor signs one of nation’s strictest vaccination laws A controversial California law that requires all children to receive vaccinations prior to attending public school in the state, and does away with waivers for religious or personal reasons, was signed by California Gov. Jerry Brown. The law will more than likely be challenged for state constitutional violations, but in signing the bill, titled SB277, Governor Brown said that he had reviewed

US warns travelers of measles outbreak in Italy, Germany & Belgium the materials and arguments and decided to sign it. “The science is clear that vaccines dramatically protect children against a number of infectious and dangerous diseases,” Brown said in a statement released Tuesday. “While it’s true that no medical intervention is without risk, the evidence shows that immunization powerfully benefits and protects the community.”The bill is a response to a recent measles outbreak, where 150 people across 14 different US states contracted measles. Most of the cases were linked to several dozen nonvaccinated people exposed to measles at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. There was opposition to the bill from hundreds of parents who said it violated their parental rights to protect children and their children’s right to a public education. “I’m heartbroken,” Rebecca Estepp of the advocacy group California Coalition for Health Choice, which opposed the bill, told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s so coercive. It’s so punitive.” Estepp has two sons, aged 17 and 15, the oldest of which was injured by a vaccine. She chose not to vaccinate her younger son in case there was a genetic reason for her

older son’s adverse reaction. Estepp said that the law will likely be challenged in court. “I still have no idea how this is going to be constitutional under the California Constitution,” said Estepp. The California constitution guarantees a right to public education. The LA Times reported that California currently has 13,592 kindergarten students with vaccination waivers on the basis of parents’ personal beliefs. Of those, 2,764 of those

were based on religious beliefs, according to state health data. According to the National Vaccine Information Center, an anti-vaccination organization which tracks vaccine legislation, California’s bill is just one of 57 other bills being pushed through 24 state legislatures over vaccination programs, including mandatory vaccines for children and teenagers. Nine of the bills concern mandatory vaccines for healthcare workers, teachers, daycare employees and students.

Theatre in Palm Springs. The multi-talented actor/writer/ singer and philanthropist Gloria Loring stars as Ann Landers in this one-woman show creatively written by television writer and producer David Rambo; and once again, is staged by Coyote StageWorks award-winning director Don Amendolia. “Ann Landers” was the pen name of Eppie Lederer, who wrote an advice column for one of Chicago’s leading newspapers. Ironically, her twin sister Pauline Lederer, wrote her advice column “Dear Abby” for the Chicago Herald American newspaper. The sisters were close but when it came to their columns, each were tigress’ defending their turf. Coyote’s co-founding artistic director and actor Chuck Yates, has the golden touch when it comes to selecting a season of plays. There have been so many memorable productions over the last eight years from this highly talented organization who perform, musicals, (“The Andrews Brothers”), comedies, (“Art” and “Boeing- Boeing”), solo tribute biographies (“Tru”), and dramas (“Agnes of God”), are among my personal favorites, all garnering Desert Theatre League Awards in the bargain. There is always the risk of not meeting the expectations of the audience or failing to engage the audience when the production is a solo effort. Plays that have repetitive dialogue hooks tend to fall into “and then I wrote, or then I played” category, allowing the audience to drift away from the playwright and the performer’s main thrust of telling a compelling story in a fresh and enjoyable way. Fortunately, this issue is

a non-issue at the Annenberg Theatre. “The Lady With All the Answers,” has plenty of interesting mini-stories to tell, thanks to Ann Landers’ forty some years of corresponding with her millions of readers dispensing witty and insightful gems of wisdom when answering those letters. The beauty and enjoyment of this production boils down to the clever crafting of how to make those reader’s letters come theatrically alive and connect with everyday situations that people all over the world recognize. Playwright Rambo is a seasoned television writer and producer who knows how to reach an audience. His “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” television series has been a staple on CBSTV for several seasons. I had the opportunity to chat briefly with him after the opening-night performance. When I asked him how long the research process took to curate and reduce her columns into a professional play format he replied, “it was just about a year,” adding, “how much he enjoyed the wonderful cooperation from Margo Howard, Eppie’s daughter who took over the column after her mother died in 2002. “The Lady with all the Answers,” has been produced by more than 200 theatrical companies to date. The success of the play is definitely a case of ‘inquiring minds want to know’. The Coyote StageWorks production is fortunate to have Gloria Loring, one America’s iconic actors in the title role. She is known to millions via her 600 episodes of “Days of Our Lives” daytime television show. Ms. Loring brings a fresh, snappy, and a delightful interpretation of Ann Landers in her heyday. By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. Geothermal-energy experts are meeting in Sacramento today to plot California’s energy future, with an eye on further developing what they say is a reliable, inexhaustible source of energy. The California Energy Commission is sponsoring the workshop to discuss a new three-year plan that calls for more research to make geothermal a larger part of the renewable-energy picture. Jim Shnell, president of the nonprofit Ocean Geothermal Energy Foundation, said new technologies allow engineers to drill through the earth’s crust where it is thinnest, on the sea floor. “We have this extremely hot, high-pressure resource that allows us to be much

more effective, much more efficient both at producing electricity and at converting electricity, by electrolysis, into hydrogen,” he said. This power can serve as a backup at times when intermittent sources such as solar and wind are waning, he said, and the hydrogen can be used to power vehicles. California’s geology makes it one of the best places in the world for geothermal energy, with hot spots at the Salton Sea and in geysers near San Francisco. In addition, off the Northern California coast, the ocean rift where geothermal energy is released lies only a few hundred miles offshore, making it relatively accessible. Geothermal energy is constantly produced by the earth’s molten core, worldwide - and thus, the experts say, it

‘Gloria Loring’ at home helming “Lady” despite it’s being a solo comedy turn. This is the director, remember, who brilliantly guided the powerful drama “Agnes of God” to a Desert Theatre League Desert Star Award in 2016. No first-rate theatre production can survive without the specialized talents of the creative people who add magic touches to the necessary technical components that transfer a production into a total winning theatrical experience. The set designed by Josh Clarbaugh, and the lights and sound designed by Moira Wilke, lend comfort and warmth to the Lake Shore Drive apartment in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood where Eppie works at night.

The costume designs of Bonnie Nipar light up the stage, especially the RubyRed peignoir in Act II. Ms. Loring seemingly glides, as if on air, when she crosses the stage. Quite an effect. The Wig designed by James Gier, from certain angles in the audience, gives Ms. Loring a young, raven-haired, California Senator Dianne Finestein-look. And keeping this excellent production on its toes from a backstage perspective is stage manager Blanche K. Mickelson. “The Lady with all the Answers” is a splendid production that performs at the Annenberg Theatre, Palm Springs, and runs through to Sunday, April 23, 2017. Don’t Miss It !

Geothermal Energy Could Help Solve Global Warming

will never run out. According to Shnell, the possibilities are endless - but geothermal needs more funding from industry and the government. “Ultimately, we’re looking for it to be a solution for global warming,” he said. “Because we can reach 100 percent renewable energy, and get away from coal and oil and all of that stuff completely, for good.

That would take decades.” Although the federal government is moving to cut budgets for scientific research, he said the state of California has a dedicated grant-making fund known as the Geothermal Resource Development Account. Information on the workshop is online at energy.ca.gov.

Dramatic Art Sweeps The Desert

By Pamela Price April was an “X”tra special month for art collectors in the desert from being the last chance month discovering Desert X site specific installations, to captures a posse of artists at Colin Fisher Studios in Cathedral City with this collector’s Collective Possibilities open through April 22. This last exhibit of the season features Christopher Shoemaker (aka “Crystofer”) and Tina Bluefield. Crystofer’s enigmatic painting, “Transition” was a “ classic example of his

abstract figurative art,” said Timmy Woods, international handbag designer. The artist’s family visiting from Las Vegas shared a few stories about their talented son who has an impressive following in the desert’s art community. Speaking of following artists around the Desert, art fans of all ages have been scouring the Valley from Whitewater to Coachella on an art-inspired treasure hunt. The key is to abide by the guidelines, which brought us to the juncture where the

San Jacinto mountain range meets the Coachella Valley. If you arrive between 3:30pm and 7 pm as we did, you can see artist Doug Aitken’s Mirage, a literally reflective ranch house elevated from it’ rugged mountainous setting, nestled in view of whirling windmills. This architectural ranchstyle installation is a spin on a suburban American home; however, it is anything but traditional. With no docent on duty, it falls upon visitors to interpret this mirror image blending the surrounding

geography with the artist’s intent, “to form a life-size Kaleidoscope that absorbs and reflects the landscape.” Oppositional forces allow viewers to “shift and transform in the ever-changing desert landscape.” View at 1111 West Racquet Club Rd., details at desertx.org/visit. Meanwhile back in Cathedral City, where their seven appointed Art Commissioners agree on one thing, this is the city “Where Art Lives.” Making good on that, Cathedral City celebrated the

installation of their donated works of art at a reception held on April 18, at their Civic Center. Works included impressive sculpture by Scott Donadio donated by Colin Fisher Studios, a rededication of the sculpture Friends of the Heart donated by Dr. Hermann Heiman, and photographs now exhibited permanently in City Hall, donated by Simeon Den and Peter Palladino.

Pasadena Playhouse’s “The Originalist”

of interest. Shame, because I think he would have been pleased with Gero’s respectful homage to him. However, I think he would be indignant at Strand’s suggestion that he lusted after the Chief Justice position (eventually filled by John Roberts); his guilt and remorse over his role in that drama was Shakespearean according to the play, but we’ll never know the truth of that. “The Originalist” does however show us that he was a brilliant man who was a true original to the end of his life. “The Originalist” runs through May 7 at the Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S. El Molino Drive in Old Town Pasadena. More information and tickets can be obtained through the Box Office or online at www. pasadenaplayhouse.org.

Brings the larger-than-life supreme court justice to life By Lisa Lyons Whether you loved him or hated him, no one could deny the powerful influence that Justice Antonin Scalia held over the Supreme Court since his appointment by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. Always a polarizing figure with an incisive mind, savage wit and superlative writing skills, Scalia delivered many dissents that will be remembered for generations to come. Before Scalia’s unexpected death in February 2016, playwright John Strand had written “The Originalist,” a one act that paid tribute to the legendary jurist and his dedication to interpreting the Constitution of the United States as the Founding Fathers wrote it, not open to modern re-interpretation. The “dead” versus “living” document status of the Constitution has been debated for decades, but never so passionately proclaimed as in those scathing dissents by Scalia. Set against the backdrop of the 2012-13 Supreme Court session, the play focuses on the esteemed jurist (magnificently portrayed by Edward Gero) and his brash and brainy social-leaning law clerk Cat (Jade Wheeler), who relishes playing devil’s advocate to the Justice – and Brad (Bret Mack), another clerk with decidedly Federalist Society leanings who seeks to impress the Justice with his own originalist ideas. The show opens with an operatic aria playing as Scalia addresses a law school graduate class and answers questions from the audience. His scripted remarks are interrupted not once but several times by a young woman who will not be silenced: it is Cat, who informs him that she has just applied to be his summer law clerk. Egads! Their subsequent interview for the clerkship doesn’t go well, with the combative tone being set from the start but, despite his irritation, one can see something in this young black woman’s grasp of facts and assertive tone has resonated with him. He hires her as his new “sparring partner” and sounding board, while Cat is seeking both insight into the

man she calls a “monster” as well as a potential mentor. The crux of the play’s plot – whether Cat will be able to insert her own personal beliefs into the opinions that Scalia permits her to draft for a controversial case – comes to a head when jealous Brad “outs” Cat as a lesbian and raises the possibility that her sexual orientation will prove an embarrassment to the Justice in the aforementioned action. That is because the dissent is a landmark case, United States v. Windsor which aimed to overturn the federal ban on same sex marriage. As a devout Catholic and constitutional purist, Scalia’s antipathy toward gay marriage and refusal to acknowledge homosexuality as a legitimate identity, was well documented. The personal pasts of both Scalia and Cat are introduced in separate vignettes, designed to show perhaps the areas in which they are very much alike; but since the play is based on a real person who was notorious for protecting his privacy, it takes a huge leap of faith to believe that these conversations would have occurred. However, if you can suspend your disbelief and just let yourself get lost in the glorious world of words, you will be treated to an evening of superlative theater. Director Molly Smith orchestrates this 95-minute chamber piece, ably balancing the operatic crescendos of Scalia’s personality with the counterpoint of the two clerks, one strident, the other thoughtful. She is helped by her talented cast, particularly Edward Gero who not only resembles Scalia, but has captured his overlooked charm that was obscured by his often acerbic personality. Gero had the good fortune to observe Scalia in the court as well as at dinner and was able to slip into many of his mannerisms and expressions. He never makes a mockery of the man who described himself as a “monster” in the eyes of the liberal left and a hero to the conservative right. The character of Cat is tricky to pull off as she is an obvious device to raise the important questions that drive the play forward. It takes a

subtle and intense performer to make it work and while Jade Wheeler’s projection and intent was fine, she didn’t seem truly comfortable in Cat’s skin. Some line deliveries and body positions seemed awkward and unsure, which I don’t think was Smith or Wheeler’s intent. Bret Mack has a thankless role of the smarmy Brad, but he does his best to make him more than a comic book baddie. Kudos to the simple, classic stage design by Misha Kachman; it evokes the operatic motif of red velvet curtains and crystal chandeliers, creating

both the solemnity of the judicial chambers and the aweinspiring expanse of a Catholic cathedral. Lighting design by Colin K. Bills, costume design by Joseph P. Salasovich, and sound design of Eric Shimelonis completes the technicallyexcellent creative team. According to sources, Justice Scalia never did see the original 2015 Arena Stage production in Washington DC, due to his concern that an appearance at the event might be construed as an endorsement of the portrayed incidents or a potential conflict

If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the foreclosure commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The Commissioner may, at the discretion of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the trustor(s) or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. To obtain information regarding reinstating the loan by paying the sums that are delinquent you should contact the Foreclosure Commissioner, Quality Loan Service Corp., at the address or phone number listed below. Any and all payments that are required as set forth above and any Application for Cancellation of the Foreclosure Sale must be submitted to Quality Loan Service Corp. at the address set forth below. By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. – Oil giant ExxonMobil is in a sharp decline that some are calling irreversible – in part due to deep changes in world energy markets. Once among the largest companies in the world, Exxon’s revenue peaked at nearly $500 billion, but last year, it was less than half that. Tom Sanzillo, director of finance for the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), says the reasons are complex, but one issue is that the company made a huge bet buying up Canadian oil sands. Sanzillo explains these are expensive reserves to produce, and the company has had to admit they are not worth keeping on the books at current low prices. “And they just wrote off 3.5

But Sanzillo points out that the energy market shifts are bigger than a temporary downturn. He points out ExxonMobil ExxonMobil is just one major oil and gas producer with a troubled financial picture, according to once funded climate change some analysts. Ball Goes Pro, Gala Story and Photos by Pat Krause On April 12th, the Heckmann Estate in Rancho Mirage was the host to the Jo Rosen and Parkinson’s Resource Organizations; Ball Goes Pro, gala. The grassy lawn was again the place to be for an evening of fun and a chance to help and be part of the Parkinson’s Organizations party. The beautiful lawn was filled with white table clothed tables with vendors lining the outer part of the lawn. This was a buffet with a lot of local restaurants participating. Cocktail and dinner hour music was provided by DJ Shasta and Esjay. Food was provided by Lulu’s Bristro and Beyond Balisage with delicious

sandwiches and more. Dessert had Nothing Bundt Cakes serving several varieties of small cakes and Brandini gave out samples of their product. There was a drink station that had 4 vendors providing many other drinks, Crater Lake, BussBox, The Wine Emporium Old Town LaQuinta and Country Smooth Whiskey. Spa Girl Vodka had a booth of their own for drinks. Jo Rosen founded this charity 27 years ago. Rosen spoke about how the charity started so many years earlier and how it has flourished into such an important part of the world, not just local and the U.S.A. She introduced Dan Ball as the new Director of Development

at the Parkinson’s Resource Organization. Ball said that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. So far, there is no cure for Parkinson’s Disease. Rosen said the volunteers do an amazing job supporting and mentoring clients with Parkinson. They have helped thousands over the year. There are only three staff members as a result the work they do is hence important, and they have a huge staff of volunteers to make this a great charity and one that is important to our Valley. Rosen expressed thanks all for coming, and a special express gratitude you to Dick and Wendy Heckman

On April 6th, they showed the Best of the Fest and there was a mini-marathon at the Palm Springs Library on April 7th. There was a Film Pitch competition for people looking forward to finding funding for a film. The closing night film was, Kaya From Jeopardy, that was about the

TV game show Jeopardy. There were eight industry guests and film panels. Local Joel Douglas, son of actor Kirk Douglas, was one of the Guests who spoke to the documentary film makers and hopefuls.
