Wines are made with fine grapes and perfectly blended seasonings, aged to perfection, to offer bold flavor to your springtime cooking. Consider these uses for each variety: Sherry cooking wine works equally well in dessert recipes, main dishes, sides, soups and sauces. One example is these delicious Chicken Gyro Bowls, which you can leave cooking in the Crockpot™ throughout the day. The remaining preparation is fast for a weeknight meal that’s ready in next to no time. Best known for its use in chicken marsala, marsala cooking wine lends flavor to other preparations, too. Marinate sliced meat in marsala cooking wine before grilling, roasting or sauteing, or swirl it into gravies and soups to add delicious, savory flavor. Stir red cooking wine into gravies and red sauces, or try marinating less-tender cuts of beef, lamb or pork in the refrigerator (for up to 24 hours) to boost flavor and tenderness. White cooking wine pairs well with fish and lighter fare like chicken and turkey, as well as rice dishes. Job Hunting with a Clear focus on the Future?

By Janice Gough Very dire predictions regarding Jobs states that there is an 83% chance that workers who earn $20 an hour or less could have their jobs replaced by robots in the next five years. We already see this with those who are Checkers at markets. Employees in the $40 an hour pay range face a 31% chance of having their jobs taken over by the machines. Clearly, the robots are coming. tasks that currently require humans to complete. Learning to work with Robotics is the area of education needed for future job growth. Graduates today must incorporate robotics training into their plans for their futures. Robots are becoming more intelligent than people and make fewer mistakes, and they don’t get bored! Most companies are moving toward this to cut costs. Adapting to this change is going to require us to understand how man-machine partnerships are going to evolve. Our goals must be to use our high-level cognitive ability to anticipate what parts of our work will be fully automated and what parts of our work will be so hard for machines to do that manmachine partnership is the most practical approach. With that in mind, we can adapt our skills to become better than our peers at leveraging man-machine partnerships. Estimates of how many jobs all together that the robots will wipe out and when vary wildly. Economists say somewhere between 9% and 47% of the West’s workers could lose jobs to automation over the next two or so decades. Some of the first jobs to be replaced will be middle management unless the employee works along with the Robot. Some of the jobs replaced may surprise you. The list includes pharmacists,

Lawyers and Paralegals, Drivers, Astronauts, Store Clerks, Soldiers, Rescuers, Babysitters, Warehouse workers, Reporters, Sports Writers, Journalists, Authors and Announcers, and Commodity Salespeople. All of these jobs have required much training in the past but are easily programmable. Whenever the job requires danger, Robotics will be used to replace those of a rescuer or soldier, just as we witness today, how a robot is used to remove a bomb or a dangerous person. Writing is difficult even for the best of authors, but not report writing. Machines can be taught to read data, pattern-match images or video, analyze almost any kind of research materials and create very readable (or announce-able) writing. Text-to-speech systems are evolving so quickly and sound very realistic. Before long,

we will listen to play-by-play commentators- done 100% by robots. Financial writers will also find their days numbered. Robo-accounting is in its infancy, but it is incredible at dealing with accounts payable and receivable, inventory control, auditing and several other accounting functions that humans used to be needed to do. Becoming a doctor was once the highestpaid occupation. Robots make amazing doctors, diagnosticians and surgeons. IBM’s Watson is teaming up with a dozen US hospitals to offer advice on the best treatments for a range of cancers and helping to spot early-stage skin cancers. Ultra-precise robo-surgeons are used now for everything from knee replacement surgery to vision correction. This trend is continuing at an incredible pace. I am not sure how robo-

doc’s bedside manner will be, but you could program a “Be warm and kind” algorithm, and the robo-doc would treat you that way. If and when robots start eliminating whole classes of employment, things could become stressful. Most people like to work and be paid for it. Most of us derive self-worth, satisfaction and dignity through our paid labors, even if the actual job may be routine. We need our work to be happy and healthy, and we need jobs to pay for our dreams. As Socrates said, “the only thing constant is change, “… and we must embrace change. Are There Surprises In Your CC&Rs?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Among the association governing documents including articles of incorporation, recorded map or plan, bylaws, operating rules and covenants, conditions, and restrictions (“CC&Rs”), the CC&Rs document is arguably the most important. Here are eleven things about CC&Rs which might surprise you, before you read them. CC&Rs are: 1) Public documents. When filed with the County Registrar/Recorder (aka, “recorded”), CC&Rs become a public document and anyone can see a copy. 2) Binding all owners. CC&Rs bind all owners, regardless of whether they read it, understood it, or received a full copy of it. As a recorded document, CC&Rs are a “covenant running with the land,” meaning a legal commitment attaching to the land and therefore its owners. 3) Typically not reviewed until too late. HOROSCOPES ARIES

It’s a very potent time for Aries, a time for reinvention, for new ways of expression and how you present yourself. You’re busy, full of life, enthusiasm (filled with God), confident of your upward mobility and success. You strive to reveal your authentic self, know impulses lead sometimes to difficulties and disharmony, yet you go ahead anyway. It’s a brave new world out there, Aries. You are the brave one.

TAURUS It’s important you become aware of others’ needs, important to listen deeply to their communication, seeking in their words the feelings being expressed. Not until we feel deeply listened to can we then sense understanding within ourselves. Within you there’s Soul searching, a seeking of inner comfort and peace. When we deeply hear others, that inner peace extends to ourselves as well.

GEMINI It’s a time to make contact (contact releases Love, Gemini’s Soul purpose), network (too-used a word these days), enter, create or extend yourself into a group, reach out to others. Only within the group of like-minded others, servers, will your awareness be heightened, goals revealed, and strengths be projected and nurtured. You then do the

same for others in the group.

CANCER Let’s ask ourselves what elements of our personality we project into the world. Let’s consider if we act professionally, with Right Relations and Goodwill in all areas of life. And if we are mastering any particular discipline at this time. Responsibilities in and for the world summon you. Hopefully you’re working in a group and can share tasks. If not gather a group and give it your leadership direction.

LEO You want to grow and expand beyond everyday life’s experiences. You want to explore, wander, journey toward new projects and activities. You want your spirit to feel adventure, your imagination to be unfettered and unobstructed. You are renewed philosophically by the hope all of this freedom and creativity incurs. You remove the blindfolds from your eyes and justice and beauty are revealed.

VIRGO Perhaps you’re observing others more keenly, seeking to know how others make decisions, live their lives, what priorities they choose. This observation is important. It’s the first step to understanding another’s emotional and psychological make-up. Observing

in this way allows you to see with accuracy, kindness, clarity and later compassion. Cultivate ahimsa (harmlessness) in thoughts, words and deeds.

LIBRA Each month around the new moon it’s good for all relationships to re-define their purpose along with partnership rules about sharing. Notice if among intimates there’s a need for extra attention and care. Meeting that need allows for all to be nurtured and strengthened. It’s good for Libra to ask themselves these questions. “Am I graceful, gracious, forgiving and supportive in relationships? If yes, how? If not, why?” It’s good to consider each day as feast days of mercy.

SCORPIO It’s time in your daily life that “all things new” be initiated. This includes daily regimes, choice of foods, diet, exercise, new agendas, plans, schedules, times of rest and the tending to everyday matters. The new and different is needed now. It’s time for efficiency, organization, detailed order, analysis and critical thinking. All these highlight your desires, aspirations and need for clarity of action and purpose... steps toward triumphant mastery.

SAGITTARIUS

You’re either romantically inclined or passionately creative or both at the same time. What you need is nothing serious right now, though Saturn may be making you feel deeply serious. However, what’s needed is fun-filled endeavors, playful encounters and a bit of celebration that’s filled with pleasure and other people’s approval of all that you do, are, and will be. You impact the world. A sort of radiance surrounds you. Golden hued.

CAPRICORN Observe all feelings, reflect upon them, write about them, concentrating on understanding them. There’s a need for safety and security somewhere in the family. In what ways would you offer safety and security? Do you need it now, too? This is an important question to answer at this time. When you explore the answer more information about yourself emerges, like where you come from, where you’re going, what supports you, what are your heart’s needs? This is journaling work.

That number is the same as the Trump administration’s and far below the goal of 62,500 Biden introduced earlier this year. Bob Fishman, executive director of the Connecticut Immigrant and Refugee Coalition, said he’s disappointed in the low cap. His group is among those

calling for an increase, primarily since it affects refugees making their homes in Connecticut. “We have several folks who have been waiting for their families, who are in the pipeline but have been held up,” Fishman observed. “And held, in some cases, for upwards of a dozen years, but now held up even further.”

PISCES Wherever you feel security and safety, appreciation and attunement, order and organization, value and worthiness is where you should live, work and focus and direct your life energies. Perhaps you will undertake a circuitous journey before you’re able to understand where this location is. Choose what is most beautiful, most comfortable, what will not betray, what offers you the most freedom and an open door. It’s a golden door. Demands for Higher Refugee Cap in the U.S.

to you. A new job perhaps? Perhaps also, it’s time to look for a new home, complete forms, begin a new course of study or service. Do call home once a week. The family loves you.

The return to the low cap is attributed to a need to reorganize the Refugee Resettlement Office since the last administration. It’s expected a final, and presumably higher, refugee cap will be announced mid-May. Fishman also wants to see help from the state for local refugees and immigrants. This includes Dreamers, young adults brought to the U.S. as children, now in the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), who also are waiting for federal action but are not eligible for health care in Connecticut. “There are DACA, who

are serving as health aides, janitors at hospitals, nursing homes, all kinds of places where COVID impacts them,” Fishman explained. “The fact that they’re not eligible to get health insurance because the state hasn’t offered it to them is unconscionable.” Fishman hopes the General Assembly will take action soon on Senate Bill 956 to open HUSKY to people regardless of immigration status. He noted since there’s no money in the state budget for the bill, it must first go through the Senate appropriations process and may be considered as early as Wednesday. Symphony’s May Concert Digitally Highlights Classics

By Desert Star Staff The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra is preparing for the third concert in their hybrid 92nd season. “Mozart and Beethoven” will premiere digitally Saturday, May 1, 2021, at 7:30 p.m. on the Symphony’s new SBSOtv platform accessible from their website, www. sanbernardinosymphony.org. A second matinee airing will follow on Sunday, May 16, at 3 p.m. Celebrating the iconic music of Mozart and Beethoven, the first half of the program includes the famous Overture from Mozart’s wildly successful opera from 1791, The Magic Flute. While this dramatic music is written for a full opera orchestra, in this concert, Symphony Music Director and Conductor Maestro Anthony Parnther has condensed the responsibility to only eight instruments; a pair of oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and horns. This, explained Parnther, will direct the artistic focus toward the rich and warm sound of the

Symphony’s principal winds. The Symphony will perform the expressive Larghetto movement from Mozart’s evocative Piano Quintet in E-flat with piano soloist David Kaplan. Then closing this program will be Beethoven’s exuberant Second Piano Concerto, also featuring Kaplan. In 1787, Beethoven came to Vienna to meet Mozart and hopefully study with him. Beethoven’s mother became ill, and it forced the teenage prodigy to return home to Bonn. By the time Beethoven made it back to Vienna (shortly after the premiere of The Magic Flute), Mozart had suddenly died. During this period in-between visits to Vienna, Beethoven wrote this captivating Second Piano Concerto in 1789, in the style of Mozart, but with his own dramatic fire. As repairs are still underway to the Symphony’s local performance venue, San Bernardino’s historic California Theatre, the concert will be recorded at two venues:

David Kaplan. Photo courtesy of ©SamantrhaWest Hollywood Scoring in Glendale. In return to the Symphony’s home city, portions of the show will be recorded at the theater at San Bernardino Valley College. Tickets for the digital concerts are $65 per household, and single

assigned-seating tickets for the live shows range from $30$100. Tickets online at www. sanbernardinosymphony.org or by calling the box office at (909) 381-5388. Box Office hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Spotlight on Black Women’s Contributions to End Sexual Violence By Desert Star Staff CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, groups are raising awareness about Black women’s contributions in the quest to end sexual violence. About one in three Black women has experienced some form of sexual violence in her lifetime, according to the National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community. And for every Black woman who reports a rape, at least 15 do not.

Jaya Kolisetty, associate director of the Women’s Resource Center at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, said from early court cases about workplace sexual harassment to the more recent ‘MeToo’ movement, Black women have been at the forefront of creating new support systems for survivors. “I think sometimes; we tend to view social issues in isolation, instead of talking about how they might be connected,

how they might reinforce each other,” Kolisetty observed. “If we’re going to address sexual violence, we have to be willing to tackle other forms of harm, other forms of oppression as well.” The Women’s Resource Center holds a series of virtual events this week, open to the public, including showing a documentary, “The Rape of Recy Taylor,” about a young Black woman speaking out against a group of white male attackers in 1944 Alabama.

The film features Rosa Parks, who was an advocate for survivors for the NAACP before she was involved in the Alabama bus boycotts. The pandemic has isolated more families at home, and the stress, fear and sense of hopelessness have also elevated the risk of sexual violence, particularly intimate partner violence. Kolisetty said prevention is vital, in addition to supporting survivors.

“So thinking about, how do we create safer environments? How do we create culture change so that incidents of sexual violence will decrease?” Kolisetty urged. Survivors of sexual violence in need of support can call 1-800-656-HOPE to reach the 24/7 National Sexual Assault Hotline. It will connect callers to local service providers who can help.

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Tom Skerritt Has Leading Role in Gloomy EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS If you ask movie buffs who Tom Skerritt is, they may or may not recognize the name but would probably recognize his face. In actuality, this seasoned actor has appeared in over 40 films and more than 200 episodic television programs starting as far back as 1962, earning an Emmy Award in 1992 for Outstanding Lead in a Drama Series for his performance in “Picket Fences.” Some of his cinematic roles include “M*A*S*H,” “The Dead Zone,” “Top Gun,” and “A River Runs Through It.” Despite being cast in countless films, he has mostly played supporting roles, making perfect sense for him to find a vehicle in which he could play the main character, which he does in EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS. He is also one of five executive producers. As I watched the film, adapted from the book by David Guterson, who co-wrote the screenplay with Thane Swigart, it began to feel familiar. Directed by SJ Chiro, the film opens with sad violin music, as Sebastien Scandiuzzi’s excellent camera work pans trees dripping with fog. We meet Skerritt’s character of Dr. Ben Givens, a retired cardiac surgeon from Seattle who practiced medicine for 50 years, sitting alone in his kitchen with his dog Rex. Mourning the death of his wife,

he is depressed and is dealing with terminal cancer. Ben assembles a rifle and places the barrel against his head but aborts the action. His daughter Renee, nicely played by Oscar and Golden Globe winner Mira Sorvino, has her challenges as she’s in the middle of a divorce and is depressed herself. However, she wants dad to live with her to take care of him, but he tells her he wants to take a final trip to Washington State’s Columbia Basin, which is where he grew up. She is worried about him driving alone, but he assures her that he will be fine. As he drives along with his dog, Les Hall’s moody music continues to underscore his frame of mind. Unexpectedly, the car overheats and a young man pulls over and offers him a ride. There is a brief respite from the morbid music as the young couple has a rock station blasting in their car. It’s about at this point that I remember where I’ve seen this film before. It was “LAND,” directed by and starring Robin Wright, as the storyline is closely paralleled. She suffered a significant loss and decided to drop out from society and stashes herself in a remote cabin in the Wyoming Mountains. A stranger named Miguel, played by Demián Bichir,

With his dog Rex as his companion, Tom Skerritt as ailing Dr. Ben Givens, visits the desolate Washington State’s Columbia Basin, the area in which he grew up. intercedes, and her suicidal thoughts slowly diminish as he teaches her how to hunt and fish. In this case, Ben, who appears to be in a great deal of physical pain, and shows it throughout most of the film, goes bird hunting for dinner, which he shares with his trusty dog. While asleep around a campfire, Rex is attacked and severely injured by another dog. Unfortunately, the good doctor has to shoot the assailant about which the

owner, a scary mountain man named Bill Harden, played by John Paulsen, becomes furious and threatening. He takes Ben’s rifle and tells him he’s lucky he doesn’t kill him. Just as in “LAND,” where a stranger intercedes, a man named Roberto, nicely by Robert Fuentes, appears out of nowhere and takes our protagonist and his wounded companion to a veterinarian named Anita, delightfully played by Annie Gonzalez, who lightens

up the dreary action with her cheerful demeanor. Ben, who somehow had medical supplies with him, had stitched the wound, and Anita admires his suturing. She drives him to a nearby motel, and the next day, he visits Rex at the clinic, and eventually, Anita invites him for dinner. She is an ex-Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and as it turns out, he was in the Army and served in Korea, Continues on Page 11

‘Mank,’ Starring Gary Oldman, Is An Oscar Contender The 93rd Oscar presentation is just around the corner and will air on Sunday, April 25th, on ABC. This year’s top contender in the Oscar race is the Netflix film “Mank,” starring Gary Oldman in the title role. The film has been nominated for ten Oscars, including Best Actor (Oldman) and Best Supporting Actress Amanda Seyfried for her performance as Marion Davies. Other films in contention include “The Father,” “Promising Young Woman,” and “Trial of the Chicago 7.” In the beginning of the biopic “Mank,” John Houseman (Sam Troughton) tells screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) that his latest work is “a hodgepodge of talky episodes, a collection of fragments that leap around in time like

Mexican jumping beans. The story is so scattered, I’m afraid one will need a road map.” He was dismissing the script for now-classic “Citizen Kane” that would star Orson Wells in the title role. In the entertaining biopic “Mank,” movie buffs get the chance to go back in time to Hollywood’s Golden Era. They also had the opportunity to learn more about Hollywood moguls like Irving Thalberg, Jack Warner and Louis B. Mayer. “Mank,” written by the late Jack Fincher who died in 2003, was directed by Fincher’s son David. Their film collaboration has received ten Oscar nominations. That’s quite an accomplishment. It’s interesting to note that the only Oscar that actor/director Orson Welles

and screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz ever won was cowriting the script for “Citizen Kane” released in 1941.

However, “Mank,” the film about “Mank” Is rated R for some their collaboration on “Citizen language and has a running Kane,” could be honored with time of 2 hours, 12 minutes. countless golden trophies.

How Trucking Industry Protocols Help Keep Roads Safe

By Desert Star Staff As both commuters and tourists return to the roads this year, they’ll likely find even more commercial trucks, which are currently moving freight at unprecedented levels amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many people often wonder how safe those 80,000-pound tractor-trailers next to them on the interstates really are. To gauge the feelings of U.S. adults traveling those roadways, one of the nation’s largest trucking companies, U.S. Xpress, developed a Safe Trucking Report to spotlight a few ways it’s helping make roads safer for all drivers. Event recorders. These small video cameras are installed fleet-wide and triggered to record certain events, such as when a driver is following too closely, has a hard brake, makes a nonsignaled lane departure or is speeding. Since accidents involving trucks often aren’t the truck driver’s fault, it also captures risky behavior of other drivers, helping better assign liability in the event a collision does occur. Most adults surveyed (79%) agree trucking companies should be required to install event recorders. Hair testing for drugs. Around 2-3% of truck drivers will test positive

for prohibited substances including marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines in a urine test. Hair testing analyzes prohibited substances metabolized in the body over a longer period and across a wider range of banned substances. A few of the major carriers, including U.S. Xpress, require a negative hair test result for all truck drivers. Among survey respondents, 71% think trucking companies should require hair testing. Speed limiters. Also installed across the entire fleet, this technology manages the speed of trucks, helping reduce accidents and improve fuel efficiency. Wi-Fienabled sensors remotely set maximum tractor speeds for use of the pedal and cruise control. Slower speeds also lead to fewer accidents. Nearly three-quarters (74%) of those surveyed agree trucking companies should require speed limiters. Insurance minimums. The Department of Transportation requires all trucking companies to maintain a minimum of $750,000 in liability insurance; an amount that hasn’t changed in nearly 40 years. To ensure its drivers and those sharing the road are protected, U.S. Xpress maintains insurance well above this required minimum.

However, in such a large and fragmented industry, there are thousands of small carriers who are insuring at bare minimum levels. More than three quarters (76%) of U.S. adults who responded to the survey agree the government should increase the minimum

from $750,000 to $2 million. “Safety is our top priority, which is why we emphasize programs like these when hiring new drivers and when talking with our customers,” said Nathan Harwell, chief legal officer at U.S. Xpress. “While some of these initiatives

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
