“Crawling Back to Broadway”
Jerome Elliott
Cabaret Star Jerome Elliott Shines at The Purple Room By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Michael Holmes’ Purple Room cabaret/nightclub located at Club Trinidad in Palm Springs is the place to catch rising stars and to enjoy terrific local performers doing their ‘thing’. Holmes is a performer/producer is his own right. Every Sunday Michael Holmes experiences a theatrical
metamorphosis becoming the legendary star persona of Judy Garland in his own production “The Judy Show”. But last Friday, he presented local cabaret star Jerome Elliott to the audiences of the Purple Room for an evening of songs, memories and anecdotes about the vicissitudes of a life in show business, complete with all the highs and lows which everyone
By Kitty Alvarado Palm Springs, CA -The CV Link’s website lays out the benefits of the 50 mile, $75 million path. It boasts, when completed, cyclists, pedestrians and electric vehicles will have safe and green alternative travel to cities through valley cities and it’s an economic boost for those cities. But Mayor of Palm Springs Robert Moon says there’s a lot the website and the Coachella Valley Association of Governments are leaving out, “How are they going to divvy up the costs of maintaining this? Yes,
I know it doesn’t cost the cities anything to have it built but we have to maintain it.” Moon says he’s not trying to squash the project, “I’m not against the CV Link, I’ve said from the very beginning I support the CV Link it’s just there’s a very large proportion in palm springs that’s inappropriate.” And because the city has the largest portion of the path he says he wants to make sure it makes sense before they commit, “Fine, let’s see how this goes but I don’t think we should be
can relate to on that bumpy road of life that we all travel. “Crawling Back to Broadway”, is a nicely written, well-crafted revue, of songs and patter, by Elliott, and a musical set list that includes inter-action with the audience, thanks to the cool and easy style of musical director Charlie Creasy. The synergy between Elliott and Creasy is the result of eight years of
performing together. And, it shows when the musical numbers seamlessly flow from one emotion to another as each number by Elliott hits the soft and poignant spots of the audience. One of joys of seeing this live cabaret and a musical revue, is how quickly Elliott engages and establishes a rapport with his audience, many of whom have been
following his career in the Coachella Valley for several years. As a side bar note: Elliott is also an actor who has appeared in drama and comedy productions throughout the Valley. I have reviewed him in the past in drama and in comedy roles, but I feel his cabaret and musical skills are still very solid

2017 Dining Out For Life to Support CV LGBTQ Community
KMIR Patrick Price PALM SPRINGS, CA, 70 restaurants across the Coachella Valley will ‘Make One Meal Matter’ on April 27 when they participate in Dining Out for Life 2017 supporting Desert AIDS Project. Locally, an estimated 10,000 diners will eat breakfast, lunch or dinner during the annual event that also happens in cities across the United State and Canada. In 2016, Dining Out for Life boasted 52 participating. Greater Palm Springs proudly had more restaurants participate at the 100% contribution level than any other city in the nation and ranked number three out of 52 last year in overall fundraising. Because of the generosity of local restaurants participating at every level, Greater Palm Springs raised more funds than larger cities such as San Francisco, Washington DC, Phoenix and Los Angles. Only two cities raised more funds – Denver and Minneapolis, both with more than twice as many participating restaurants. In addition to participating restaurants, over 130 local volunteers will serve as Dining Out for Life Ambassadors welcoming diners at restaurants while they raise awareness on social media. Ambassadors will offer diners an opportunity to enter this year’s raffle. Prizes include: Two VIP tickets to the 2018 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards including the VIP Pre-Party ($2,000 value), Two nights in a Junior Suite at the V Palm Springs and breakfast for two ($900 value) $500 gift certificate to Revivals. Dining Out for Life is a national campaign held each year on the last Thursday in April throughout the United States and Canada to raise funds for AIDS Service Organizations.
Generous participating restaurants in the Coachella Valley will contribute 33% or more of their food, beverage, and liquor gross sales to support Desert AIDS Project on April 27. “This is a unique opportunity for people to join the fight against HIV/AIDS. Just choose one of the participating restaurants and enjoy a great meal with friends or family. We are grateful to the restaurants that continue to support our mission and pleased to welcome many new ones this year.” said David Brinkman, CEO of Desert AIDS Project (D.A.P.). Dining Out for Life has benefitted Desert AIDS Project for twelve years, raising $200,000 last year alone. It’s always been a popular event in the West Valley, but with the list of new participants this year, it has become a truly valley-wide event. “The event generates community awareness of HIV / AIDS and supports Desert AIDS Projects mission to enhance health and well-being of our community.” Added Brinkman Founded in 1984 in Palm Springs, California, as a volunteer response to the emerging AIDS crisis, Desert AIDS Project today is the largest nonprofit federally qualified health center in Palm Springs specializing in HIV care and prevention. The agency’s “Get Tested Coachella Valley” public health initiative is dedicated to ensuring that every teen and adult knows their HIV status and that those who test positive are connected to care. D.A.P. serves over 3,600 clients who reside in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties of Southern California. “For more than 30 years, Desert AIDS Project has provided primary health care, dental, social services and nutrition to people living with
HIV and AIDS. Fundraisers like Dining Out for Life help us serve the fifty new clients who walk through our doors every month” said Darrell Tucci, Chief Development Officer at Desert AIDS Project. “Dining Out for Life is a fun event that brings our community together. Our volunteer ambassadors look forward to welcoming diners every year. People don’t have to do anything special. We’re not asking anyone to do something out of the ordinary. We’re just asking people to ‘Make One Meal Matter’ by going out to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner with friends and family at participating restaurants.” Said George Nasci-Sinatra, Resource Development Event Manager at Desert AIDS Project. Davis Gaines: From Phantom to Don Quixote
On May 5-7, Davis Gaines will reprise his Ovation Award winning role as Don Quixote in “Man of La Mancha” at the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge. The show will then be performed at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts in La Mirada from June 2 to 25. Davis is perhaps best known as the phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera,” a role he has performed over 2,000 times, but Cervantes Don Quixote is also a character that is very dear to his heart. “Don Quixote is a little crazy,” he says, ” but he

has powerful beliefs of the world, and he tries to right the world’s wrongs with kindness and goodness, something that is very much needed in our world today.” According to Gaines. “Phantom was a great part, and it changed my life, but “Man of la Mancha” is perhaps my favorite role to play because it is a perfect show for our time, a show that never fails to inspire us to be always hopeful about the future. And both shows have powerful songs, “The Impossible Dream” in La Mancha and “Music of the Night” in Phantom.” As a kid, Davis lived near Orlando, before Disney World came to Florida. He told me he was “painfully shy, so I don’t know why I wanted to be an actor. No family member had been in the business, but I was a kid with imagination so my parents let me join a children’s theatre group. They also took my sister and me to New York where we saw ‘Oliver’, which was my first Broadway show.” He continued, “In junior high school, I had an amazing drama teacher who did musicals, so I got to sing. When I went to Florida State, I majored in theatre and after graduation I moved to New York. It took hard work and perseverance, but I never gave up. My first big show on Broadway was ‘Camelot’ with Richard Burton. I had a small role as a squire, but the show was a master class for me, just to watch him on stage every night.”
He then worked with Alexis Smith in “The Greatest Little Whorhouse” and Carol Channing in “Hello Dolly” where he played Cornelius Hackl. During his career, he has starred in countless musicals and has sung for five presidents. “Actually, I can almost say six,” he said laughing. “I sang for the Fords, the Reagans, both Bushes and the Clintons and I once sang a concert for Donald Trump when he was married to Marla Maples. It was at Mar-a-lago, in the same room where he recently met with the president of China.” We also spoke about the pitfalls of live theatre. “Things happen in every performance,” according to Gaines. “That’s what’s so exciting about live theatre. People forget lines and we cover, from time to time wrong props are used and eventually the sets fall down, which happened to me once in an outdoor production when a big wind blew down the set, just as I was entering to deliver a package. In ‘Phantom’, the floor was slippy due to the dry ice, so we often tripped a bit, but the worst thing that happened to me was early on in ‘Phantom’ when I was playing the young Vicomte Raoul, not the phantom. I had to leap from the bridge and fall 30 or 40 feet through an opening to the stage floor to a mattress below. I didn’t land right and broke my ankle.” As noted earlier, Gaines played the phantom 2,000 times because every time
Hidden Harvest
By Shirley Brenon The Friends of Hidden Harvest pulled out all the stops for their end of the season fundraiser. It began with a delicious luncheon at Le Vallauris followed by a play at The Annenberg Theater in Palm Springs. The guests enjoyed their choice of four fabulous entrees and four decadent deserts and then walked across the street to see Gloria Loring do a bang up job of playing Ann Landers in “The Lady with all the Answers.” This very entertaining event was chaired by president Dee Brown, Barbara Stenzler and Amy Ashmann. The 120 guests were seated in the patio of Le Vallauris under the 50 year old ficus trees. The tables were decorated with a variety of beautiful succulents donated by Bob Williams Nursery in Indio. This restaurant is actually a Palm Springs historical monument. It is called the George B. Roberson House
and was lived in by George, manager of the Desert Inn, and his mother Nellie Coffman, one of the early settlers. The Mediterranean style threebedroom home was built in 1927 and George lived there for 50 years. The guests were very taken with the beauty of the outdoor patio and the history of the monument. The restaurant serves lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and dinner every night. Once all had arrived, Brown introduced CEO and Founder of Hidden Harvest Christy Porter who provided information about the charity. She began by thanking everyone for their continuing efforts and emphasized how important they were. “Today we have less access to farm and field to glean crops and in addition the number of people we need to feed increases. Hidden Harvest continues to move a million pounds of produce each year April 28, 2017

Their goals continue today: to help spread the word about Hidden Harvest’s services and needs, as well as assist in fund raising efforts. They currently have about 100 members that pay $250 a year. Current president Dee Brown said, “We hold about four entertaining events each year to raise money. This year we had a game day, fashion show, social luncheons and a visit to an art museum. We are also planning a farm visit for next season. We’re like ‘The Little Engine That Could,’ a small group but we try hard to help. We volunteer at the Senior markets and other activities. The people get so excited when our trucks pull up. They know they’ll get fresh vegetables and we get hugs and thank yous. The experience is very rewarding.” Please call Dee Brown at 760 469-3513 if you wish to join the Friends or become a volunteer. For more information go to HiddenHarvest.org.

Cathedral City Roads Could Receive Long Overdue Repairs KMIR Vince Marino Cathedral City, CA -There could be good news down the road for drivers in Cathedral City. Council members will hear from the City’s Administrative Services Director today. Tammy Scott will present an overview of the city’s budget for the next two years and how some of that money could be spent. The condition of this road was the focus of a story KMIR News covered in February. “Based on the issue that KMIR brought to us a few months ago, the city went out and looked at that construction. It is a heavily used road,” said Cathedral City Communications Manager Chris Parman. City officials say the road is being used by drivers who want to get to James Workman Middle School, The Dennis Keith Soccer Park,
Rancho Mirage High School and of course residents of nearby neighborhoods. People who live just south of 30th Avenue have long complained about the vibrations they feel throughout their entire home when a car drives by. “You can feel the vibration. You can feel the shaking in the house. And it’s very loud because of the bumps that the big heavy truck and cars are hitting. There a lot of vibrations and everybody on this street can feel it,” said neighborhood resident Michael McGee. The show is comprised of original music and lyrics by some of the finest artists of pop music, including Broadway: “Birthday”, by Lennon and McCartney; the Helen Lawson song “You’re Gonna Hear From Me” by Dory and Andre Previn; ”Pour Me a Man” by Fred Barton; to the bittersweet “I’d Rather Leave While I’m in Love” by Peter Allen and Carole Bayer Sager, that finds Elliott going into the audience to playfully interact with Hollywood TV actress Judith Chapman of “The “Young and the Restless”. “Crawling Back to Broadway”, is a musical revue that Elliott grabs and www.desertstarweekly.com

The party was held in an empty space next door to a new restaurant that will be opening in the next month or so. songs that were sung were songs from Jerry Herman’s plays, and a few were not so well known unless you saw the play or remembered them from a while back. A few of the singers would explain how the song was created and for which play. The concert went so smoothly that there was little time in between solos. The timing was perfect. This is where you can hear these fabulous singers in one place without having to go to a broadway play to hear them
and then only one play at a time. This is always a sold out appearance as people realize the opportunity to hear these amazing artists perform. The Palm Springs High School Band came out from the wings to the front of the stage for a song just before the finale. Some of the more famous song’s sung were Mame; I Won’t Send Roses, Time Heals Everything, The Best of Times and of course, Hello Dolly. Carol Channing’s name was mentioned several times as she was the star in many plays, and her signature song is, Hello Dolly. Ruta Lee came on stage to explain the mission of Jewish Family services that is for everyone, regardless or religion, age, race or lifestyle. They provide an array of services to those in need with direct help to more than 3,000 people of all ages and incomes each year. Jewish Family Services, JFS, is a non-profit charity and relies on generous donations. They provide a much-needed service to all in need in the Coachella Valley.
