Market Unrest can Wreck Havoc on Retirement unless you are Prepared

By Janice Gough Periods of market unrest are common and can wreak havoc on any portfolio – but especially in the first few years of retirement, when withdrawals are being made, as opposed to before retirement. It is important to be aware of the value of retirement planning to head off the very real risk of market volatility early in retirement. Despite that risk, some people, particularly affluent consumers with greater market investments may have a misperception that they are immune to market shocks. Despite the inevitability of downturns, they believe their

portfolio will have time to recover, as it has in the past. Psychologists have a name for such a tendency: “optimism bias.” In short, people naturally believe that they’re unlikely to experience a negative event as compared with someone else. Unfortunately, “Optimism bias” can do significant damage, particularly in financial planning and retirement. However, there are some ways that an advisor can help their client’s plan for the risk of a market downturn, early in retirement and defend against it. In early retirement, one could experience a “Sequence of Return Risks.” Volatility poses a much greater risk in early rather than mid to late retirement. This is the risk of taking withdrawals from an investment with poor returns. Many advisors will discuss the power of Dollar Cost Averaging in building a portfolio. The psychology is that if you consistently invested into a fund that you may buy some shares at a lower price, while other times it may be higher, but your average costs would balance the scale. However, when you begin to take income in retirement, and a Sequence of down market occurs, this is referred to as “Reverse Dollar Cost averaging,” which can drastically reduce principal. When an extreme market event happens early in retirement, the long-term effects can be devastating. Simply put, Your portfolio

will have no time to recover when one must actively take withdrawals. What’s more, your portfolio might never improve, especially if you have other unexpected expenses (e.g., medical bills). Individuals tend to retire in strong-performing markets and are more likely to experience negative equity returns immediately afterward. Between 1926 and 2010, there were higher odds of a negative year for the S&P 500 after three years of reliable performance. We have experienced a strong market in the last few years, but do not fall asleep at the wheel! What an advisor can do to help shield the impact of Reverse Dollar Cost averaging is to make sure their clients own Life Insurance. The primary purpose of life insurance is the death benefit. It is an incredibly versatile product that can serve as a cushion to help prepare for the unexpected. For one, the policyholder can take a loan against the policy, up to its cash value, with typically no tax consequences – and suspend withdrawals from their portfolio while the market is down. This can help reduce the impact of market volatility on the overall investment portfolio. However, this will reduce or may eliminate some of the death benefit available to their client’s heirs. We, as an advisor, always recommend, to keep a few years’ expenses in liquid assets. This can help avoid selling off equities in the event of a downturn (i.e., selling

low). Liquid assets might miss out on the market upside, but they can serve as a cushion that allows you to delay equity withdrawals for at least a year or two, allowing the portfolio time to recover if necessary. A diversified portfolio can also help offset market shocks. Different types of assets with distinct return patterns can support a collection built to withstand economic swings, making it less likely that one will experience a devastating loss in any of your investments. Your advisors can look at where the money is going to help their clients actively decrease expenses in the event of an early retirement market decline. One may need to reduce retirement expenses, especially in the event of a severe market dip. Adding income is also

a solution. By working parttime, you would decrease reliance on withdrawals. The market is unpredictable. The cash value of permanent life insurance, however, can act as a stopgap during times of economic upheaval, providing supplemental funds for retirement expenses as needed.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. The previous HOA Homefront column discussed choices in association management. If the association decides to hire a management firm to provide service, the management contract should be an important point of focus for the board. Price is not everything: Hiring a management firm solely on price is a mistake. Associations may discover “you get what you pay for.” Factors affecting the fee are: 1) Level of service desired. 2) Workload, or number of accounts the manager handles. 3) Quality of personnel – more highly qualified managers command higher salaries. 4) What is included or excluded - Check for extra charges and fees before signing the contract. Look beyond the bare fee quoted, and make sure the management fee matches the level of service the association desires. Reviewing the contract: Before the contract is signed,

legal counsel should review it, but if not, consider the following key concerns. Space does not permit a complete list of all such items, but here are some to consider. Workload: How many other associations is the manager simultaneously handling, and how large are they? Fifteen accounts may be fine or two may be too many, depending upon the nature of the other accounts and the level of service desired. Vendor tie-ins: Does the company require, or simply offer, additional services at a fee? Does it have affiliated vendors to which it refers ordinary non-management work such as maintenance or repairs? While such services are convenient, the association should have a choice, because such services might be obtained elsewhere at less cost. Management firms must under Civil Code 5375 make certain disclosures up front - did they? Contract Length: The contract often will specify a specific term. Starting to manage an association involves much start-up work, and it could be months before the

company begins to realize any profit. A minimum term up to 12 months is fair, accompanied by a cancellation right or a reasonable buyout fee. Without a specified buyout or termination right, automatically annually renewing contracts help the company and not the association. However, General Managers need some job security, so those contracts will often have a guaranteed term. Check the extra fees: Too many management companies compete solely on price, (as opposed to service, qualifications and reputation), and too often the focus is only on the base fee. One way companies can offset a lower base management fee is to have many extra charges. Check those charges, including document or transfer fees and homeowner charges for services. Funds handling: Management companies often propose association funds be deposited in the company bank trust account and the manager signs association checks. This is more convenient, but the better choice is to require that the account be the association’s and not permit

management to sign checks. Fidelity insurance: The association is required by Civil Code 5806 to carry fidelity (dishonesty) insurance and so should the management company. Make sure the association’s coverage includes the management, and is at least in the minimum amount specified by Civil 5806. Check with the association’s insurance broker to make sure the fidelity insurance meets the statute and is sufficient to protect the association. Find a good manager, carefully review the contract, and request reasonable changes. Start a strong managerassociation relationship - and keep it for a while!

Trump threatens to shut down US-Mexico border ‘next week’

By Desert Star Staff In a Friday tweet, President Donald Trump threatened to shut down all, or most of the southern border next week if Mexico doesn’t act immediately to stop illegal migration into the US in its entirety. With migrant detention numbers surging past the crisis point in the borderadjacent city of El Paso in Texas this week, Trump is now promising to resort to the swift and drastic measure of shutting down border crossings altogether if Mexico doesn’t take action. “The DEMOCRATS have given us the weakest immigration laws anywhere in the World. Mexico has the strongest, & they make more than $100 Billion a year on the US,” Trump said, demanding congressional action to beef up security at the border. The president then demanded that Mexico must also take drastic action to “stop illegals from

entering the US” through the southern border, issuing the country an extremely time sensitive ultimatum. If Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States through our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week. Shortly after issuing the inflammatory tweets, Trump confirmed to reporters that the border shutdown could affect “all trade,” and that he would “keep it closed for a long time.” “I’m not playing games, Mexico has to stop it,” he added. Asked about the president’s comments, US Customs and Border Protection Deputy Commissioner Robert Perez toldCNN that “the entirety of the immigration system is absolutely overwhelmed,” adding that it was essential to “work with our Mexican counterparts”

to handle the issue. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have been scrambling to point the finger after footage emerged of hundreds of migrants being housed under a bridge in El Paso due to extreme overcrowding in detention facilities. Border Patrol Commissioner Kevin McAleenan announced

earlier in the week that the agency had even begun to risk “direct releases” of migrants the government is unable to provide for. Mexico did not take Trump’s remarks lightly, with the country’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard taking to Trump’s social media of choice – Twitter – to reject the threats and praise his own country.

“Mexico does not act on the basis of threats. We are a great neighbor. [Ask] the million and a half Americans who chose our country as their home, the largest community of [Americans] outside the US For them we are also the best neighbor they could have,” Ebrard wrote.

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has said that there is “a very good likelihood” he will shut down the border with Mexico next week, upping the ante over border security and arguing that the US would benefit from cutting off trade. Trump has threatened to cut trade with Mexico to zero if that’s what it takes to stop the influx of illegal migrants and drugs into the US. Speaking to reporters at Mar-a-Lago on Friday afternoon, he mounted a verbal onslaught on the Mexican authorities, accusing them of doing nothing to stop the “horrible situation” at their border with the US. “So there’s a very good likelihood that I’ll be closing the border next week, and that’ll be just fine with me,” Trump said. Trump claimed it would be “very easy” for Mexico to stem the flow of people sneaking into the US if they “choose to do that.” He invoked the trade deficit the US has with Mexico to justify the reasoning behind his ultimatum, arguing that Mexico profits significantly from trade with the US and must, therefore, do its part by enforcing strict immigration laws. “We are not going to give them hundreds of billions of dollars and tell them they are not going to use their

strong immigration laws that help the United States.” Trade deficits have long been Trump’s sore spot in relations with other countries. Mexico, Canada, China, and the EU rolled out retaliatory tariffs last year after Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum from most countries. Referring to the trade deficit with Mexico, Trump said cutting off trade would benefit the US economy. “And with a deficit like we have with Mexico and have had for many years, closing the border would be a profitmaking operation,” he said. Earlier in the day, Trump tweeted that he was mulling shutting down large parts or the entirety of the border with Mexico if it does not “immediately” stop the flow of migrants. He further said the decision might impact “all trade.” The new flurry of threats by Trump comes shortly after Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador rejected responsibility for the illegal migrant problem, urging Trump to stop blaming Mexico. “This is a problem of the United States, or it’s a problem of the Central American countries,” Obrador said, adding, however, that he would work with Trump to alleviate the crisis.

Southwest’s Boeing 737 MAX emergency lands in Florida By Desert Star Staff A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft made an emergency landing at Orlando International Airport after an engine malfunction, the FAA has said. The jet was on its way to be grounded in wake of the deadly MAX 8 crashes. The jet, which was on its way to Victorville, California to be placed in temporary storage, suffered an engine problem shortly after takeoff and returned to Orlando International Airport to land. The plane had only two on board; the pilot and co-pilot. The pilots followed protocol and there were no injuries, according to Southwest spokesman Dan Landson, who said the plane would be taken to the airline’s Orlando maintenance facility for further examination. “The crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 8701, a Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, declared an emergency after the aircraft experienced a reported engine

problem while departing from Orlando International Airport in Florida about 2:50 p.m. today,” the FAA confirmed in a statement to the Orlando Sentinel. “The aircraft returned and landed safely in Orlando. No passengers were aboard the aircraft, which was being ferried to Victorville, Calif., for storage. The FAA is investigating.” President Donald Trump ordered every 737 MAX 8 and 9 aircraft grounded earlier this month, after two fatal accidents. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 nosedived into a field shortly after takeoff two weeks ago, killing all 157 people on board. Indonesian Lion Air Flight 610 plunged into the sea last October, killing all 189 passengers and crew. Investigators are now checking if the plane’s software, namely the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), could be responsible for the accidents. The system adjusts

the tail to keep the nose level in flight, but it is suspected that it can overcompensate, forcing the craft into a dive. In the aftermath of the two tragedies, the spotlight has fallen on the FAA, which reportedly allowed Boeing to conduct its own “flawed” safety analysis of the jet. The FAA

trusted Boeing’s conclusions, which a team of insider’s claim were carried out without proper care, in an attempt to bring the plane to market before rival Airbus launched their own similar jetliner. An unrelated Southwest Airlines flight suffered engine failure after departing New York

LaGuardia Airport last April. Debris from the 737-700’s failed engine damaged a cabin window, partially sucking a passenger out of the plane and substantially damaging the aircraft. The passenger was killed in the accident, the first fatality aboard a Southwest Airlines flight.

represented in Congress. Donovan Lee-Sin, public policy, and community engagement officer for The Children’s Trust, says at least 200,000 children could go uncounted, just because their families are hard to reach. “So, areas where you have high influence of minority households, immigrant households, multi-family housing, and so it is – it’s a particular challenge for our state,” Lee-Sin says. Florida has the fourth highest number of young children living in areas considered hard to count. Lee-Sin says it’s essential to meet that challenge to ensure everyone is counted. Florida gained two additional representatives after the 2010 census and received more than $44 billion in federal dollars to support government programs.

Lee-Sin says the highest rate of under-count rests with the youngest Floridians – from birth to age four. To avoid it requires significant outreach to families and letting them know why it’s essential to fill the forms out accurately. “Having an undercount and not taking stock of such a significant percentage of our population means that federal budgeting or appropriations – for things that support public education or highway or housing or road construction – may mean that we get a lesser amount than we should get,” Lee-Sin explains. Lee-Sin is encouraging everyone to be on the lookout for the census forms and to start having conversations with friends and family about participating. He adds there will be multiple opportunities to fill out forms including online, by standard mail, via phone, and in some cases with an in-person visit by a census representative.

People are encouraged to paint their thumbnails blue and post pictures to social media to start a conversation about prevention.

“We’re all in this together, and we all need to know what to look out for, we all need to know how we can help in this prevention effort,” says Brenda Stanley, a board member with the Idaho Children’s Trust Fund. “And so we’re hoping that by having people paint that one thumbnail blue – especially with a lot of people that don’t normally wear nail polish – that people will ask, ‘What’s that?’” Stanley says people with painted thumbnails can point folks to organizations’ websites that offer resources on this subject, such as the Idaho

Stanley points to training programs such as Darkness to Light that is available to help adults protect children from abuse. “We want to help,” she states. “We want to keep families strong, and this is how we do it – by giving them resources. Comedian Vladimir Zelensky leads in exit polls.

By Desert Star Staff Comedian Vladimir Zelensky is leading in exit polls in the presidential election in Ukraine with over 30% of the vote, according to exit polls. The runner-up is incumbent president President Petro Poroshenko with 17.8 %. Zelensky, a newcomer in politics, campaigned on an anti-corruption platform and the image of a character (the Ukrainian president) he played in a popular satirical TV show, ‘Servant of the People’. Critics say he is just a figurehead for tycoon Igor Kolomoisky, an allegation that both vehemently deny. The leader of the presidential race, Zelensky, has expressed his gratitude to those Ukrainians who voted “not just for the crack,” as he put it. Poroshenko’s campaign

is focused on the promise that one day Ukraine will join the EU and NATO, an aspiration that was enshrined in the Ukrainian constitution during his first term. He also presents himself as a staunch nationalist, as he has proposed restricting the use of the Russian language in Ukraine to promote Ukrainian, and has expressed his support for the newly-formed Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which the Russian Orthodox Church sees as a revolutionary force. Yulia Tymoshenko, a veteran of Ukrainian politics, is in third place with slightly over 14 percent. While the official data suggests otherwise, Tymoshenko has claimed that she scored second and will be in the second round of the elections, accusing the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) of interfering in the polls.

She served as prime minister twice and spent three years in prison under Poroshenko’s predecessor – which she insists was political persecution. Her main message is the promise of better living standards

and a lower cost of living. If neither of the candidates gets 50 percent plus one vote, a second round will be held on April 19 between the top two candidates. The Interior Ministry received some 1,900

complaints about alleged violations and launched 31 criminal cases have been launched in response. The election commission, however, said no significant abuses have happened.

hold companies such as Facebook accountable by imposing sanctions when we make mistakes.” Speaking about the way to minimize the spread of harmful content on the platform, Zuckerberg said that regulators should “set baselines” for companies over what content is prohibited and force them to report about how they enforce these rules. “I believe every major Internet service should do this quarterly because it’s just as important as financial reporting.”

Facebook has taken hits for its handling of the New Zealand mosque shooting video, which was streamed live by the attacker. New Zealand authorities say the company was too slow in deleting the video, allowing it to spread all over the internet. Zuckerberg’s new selfpunishment initiative comes as Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren suggests breaking up monopolies like Facebook, Amazon, and Google due to the vast power they have accumulated.

vision. On Saturday, he took the damage control one step further, telling the government he’s been a bad boy and needs to be regulated. Governments taking up a more active role in policing the internet is a good thing, Zuckerberg wrote in an op-ed published by the Washington Post. Government control would somehow create more freedom, he argues, by setting up an internetsized safe space. “I believe we need a more active role for governments and regulators. By updating the rules for the Internet, we can preserve what’s best about it — the freedom for people to express themselves and for entrepreneurs to build new things — while also protecting society from broader harms,” Zuckerberg wrote. He proposes that regulators focus on four key areas that he believes require government oversight,

which is “harmful content, election integrity, privacy, and data portability.” Zuckerberg lamented that his company has been allowed to get away with too much control over freedom of speech, and suggested it should be somebody else’s problem – somebody selected by politicians. “Lawmakers often tell me we have too much power over speech, and frankly I agree,” he wrote, adding that he believes that it should be done on their behalf by an independent body that would set the rules Facebook and others would have to follow. Facebook and Twitter were accused of bias and censorship after they purged hundreds of alternative media pages ahead of the November 2018 midterm election. Recently, Facebook imposed a ban on any praise of “white nationalism” and “white separatism,” prompting more free speech concerns. In February, it blocked several RT-linked pages operated by a German-based company for not revealing their “ties” to Russia, a move that again drew accusations of “blatant censorship.” The CEO of the tech giant, which has reportedly been under investigation by federal prosecutors for allegedly striking 150+ illicit data-sharing partnerships, said that there should be “clear rules” set “about who’s responsible for protecting information when it moves between services.” The mechanism “shouldn’t require data to be stored locally, which would make it more vulnerable to unwarranted access,” Zuckerberg said. “And it should establish a way to

Zuckerberg asks governments for more internet regulation

Senate Dems to Introduce Amendment to Abolish Electoral College

NBC PS News Staff Leading Democratic senators are expected to introduce a constitutional amendment Tuesday to abolish the Electoral College, adding momentum to a long-shot idea that has been gaining steam among 2020 presidential candidates. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, plans to introduce the measure, along with Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the No. 2-ranking Democrat in the Senate, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Also signed on to the legislation is Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., one of a growing number of presidential candidates who have called for electing presidents by popular vote, even though changing the Constitution is seen as virtually impossible today. A constitutional amendment may be proposed

by a two-thirds supermajority in both the House (about 290 votes) and Senate (67 votes) and requires ratification by 38 states. Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, Pete Buttigieg, the Democratic mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and former Housing Secretary Julian Castro are among the presidential candidates who have expressed openness to abolishing the Electoral College. “We should abolish the Electoral College,” Castro said at a 2020 Democratic candidate forum in Washington, D.C., on Monday. “It doesn’t reflect the will of the people of the country.” Two of the last three presidents have lost the popular vote but won the Electoral College, leading

critics to charge that the system is undemocratic and threatens the legitimacy of the American political system. Those calls have been led primarily by Democrats since they lost out in both 2000 when George W. Bush beat popular vote winner Al Gore and 2016 when Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton

even though she won almost 3 million more votes. The current system assigns electoral votes on a state-bystate basis according to the size of their congressional delegations, which gives an advantage to smaller states and a disadvantage to bigger states since all states have the same number of senators.

Defenders of the Electoral College say it protects the interests of smaller and more rural states and warn that presidential candidates would only campaign in major population centers like New York City and Los Angeles if the popular vote alone mattered. Source: NBC Palm Springs

By Christopher Johnston For one Ohio trafficking victim, the opening of the accredited rape crisis center at the YWCA Dayton last year proved crucial to quelling her inner demons, which lingered long after the physical pain subsided. For years, her abuser raped and beat her daily. She must never tell anyone, he threatened, because it would “open Pandora’s box.” Discussing her ordeal in counseling made her feel like it would open that box of monsters and shadows. Her counselor, however, reminded her that the bottom of Pandora’s box held the light of hope. In her private sessions, he taught her to visualize walking down a hallway and opening doors to seek that light and the letters to spell the word “hope” in each room she

imagined. As she transitioned out of her care at the YWCA, she revealed that, for the first time when she did the exercise, she was finally able to identify all of the letters. Dayton’s facility represents one of 14 new rape crisis centers that have opened in Ohio during the past five years, increasing the statewide total to 31, according to Rosa Beltre, Executive Director of the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence, the umbrella organization for all rape crisis centers in the state that oversees accreditation. “Sexual violence is not occurring more often here,” she says. “But people are more willing to come forward and request our services and help.” The recent #MeToo movement, Beltre added, also instilled a greater sense that victims can regain their

voice and share their stories to help heal themselves and other survivors of rape or sexual assault. Part of OAESV’s mission is to identify communities that would benefit from increased sexual assault advocacy services. Each RCC office must meet five core standards: advocates trained in sexual violence and advocacy; a trained crisis hotline staff available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; legal and court advocates, the ability to send an advocate to a hospital within 30 minutes before a sexual assault kit examination. And the ability to work with a culturally diverse and marginalized population to serve all communities. Beltre and OAESV work with cities the organization identifies or who have come to them to develop centers

in communities without adequate rape crisis services. Their task is a big job. Ohio’s Office of Criminal Justice Services most recent statistics indicated 5,589 rapes reported statewide in 2016. Nationally, 2 out of 3 rapes go unreported, according to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN.) Ohio leads in some areas of addressing sexual violence, trails in others, and several new initiatives are slated for the near future. “Ohio was ahead of the curve when it passed the original bill for law enforcement to forward all sexual assault kits for testing (SB 316, 2015), but until December, it had been a while since Ohio had done anything legislatively to fill in those holes,” said Ilse Knecht, director of policy & advocacy at the Joyful Heart

Foundation in New York. “There has been some good work done on the ground level, especially in Cleveland.” Eye on Ohio looked around the whole state to identify areas where preventing sexual assault and helping rape victims heal has significantly improved. • Cuyahoga County Leads in Sexual Assault Prosecutions • Toledo Continues to Build Victim Focus • Columbus Launches Prevention Initiatives for Campuses • Key Legislation Will Continue to Strengthen Efforts Christopher Johnston is a freelance journalist and author based in Cleveland, Ohio. Health-Care Advocates: Overturning ACA Would Hurt Thousands in CT By Desert Star Staff HARTFORD, Conn. – Hundreds of thousands in Connecticut could lose healthcare coverage completely if the Affordable Care Act is overturned, according to health-care advocates. This week the Trump administration sided with a federal court judge in Texas who ruled the entire law that gave millions of Americans access to health care is unconstitutional. Now Connecticut Attorney General William Tong has joined with 21 other state attorneys general in a brief filed with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals

www.desertstarweekly.com

challenging that ruling. Frances Padilla, president of the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut, says last year more than 111,000 state residents enrolled in plans under the ACA, and almost 80,000 get subsidies to help pay for it. “Their insurance would go from zero in some cases to $350 a month for a 27-year-old on a silver plan,” says Padilla. The 2017 federal tax law repealed the ACA’s “individual mandate.” The Texas judge ruled that provision was so fundamental to the law that without it, the entire law was invalid.

Padilla notes that like some other states, Connecticut has acted defensively against attacks on the ACA by incorporating some of its provisions into state law, like prohibiting discrimination based on pre-existing conditions. “The problem is without the ACA we wouldn’t have the subsidies and we wouldn’t have some of the other programs that exist under the Affordable Care Act even beyond the marketplace,” says Padilla. Last year, Connecticut also passed a law requiring most insurance plans to include the ten essential benefits required by the ACA. April 3, 2019

Even supporters of the ACA believe it needs to be improved, but they point out that millions of Americans who were uninsured ten years ago now have health insurance. And Padilla warns that the Act’s opponents have yet to suggest a replacement. “I don’t see how it is

possible for the federal government to eliminate the Affordable Care Act and not account to 20 million people,” says Padilla. The attorneys general argue that even without the individual mandate, there is no legal basis for overturning other provisions of the ACA.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

It’s most important to think about tact and positive Right Relations instead of the usual competitiveness, lack of tact, frustrations, headstrongness and any sort of aggressiveness. Have the intentions to bring forth diplomacy. Allow your endeavors and activities to create spiritual resources that serve others. As you make all things new, make them harmonious, too.

TAURUS Your subconscious comes to life and all your assertive abilities go into hiding. In the deepest parts of yourself you gather courage and become brave. You may remember things from the past which create worry or anxiety. Tend to your heart, body and nervous system with care, choosing extra rest and foods that lessen inflammation. A spiritual presence enters your life. Revelations continue to occur. You may attend or join a church or spiritual group.

GEMINI Friends might visit to chat and discuss new ideas. You might meet new ones or join a group or organization that attract you socially. Some relationships that are not close may fall away, to later reform themselves into better and closer friendships. Whatever your goals, it will be friends who help you move from here to a greater “there.” Friends

APRIL 3 – 9. 2019 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

offer to help with all your hopes, wishes and dreams. And they help you to truly value yourself, as well.

CANCER You wonder about worldly attainment, how you present yourself in public. You want to be remembered. If you’re usually shy, this will disappear. The world is your stage for a while and there’s opportunity to establish yourself. You work hard becoming the best you can be. And you are the very best due to your determination and drive. Be impulsive, trust yourself, and shed your shell just for a moment or two.

LEO You find yourself setting goals, planning and considering far distant travels. Interest in philosophy, religion, education and expanding your horizons appear in dreams. This is a good time for you. Gathering your talents and gifts, you’re optimistic and vitalized. In the days ahead, you’ll be blazing a trail into the wide and adventurous unknown. Aspiration, a sense of adventure & visualizations are your guides.

VIRGO It would be good to read Jung’s “Red Book” along with “Memories, Dreams and Reflections”. And it’s good to look at, study and draw symbols so that you can begin to anchor greater ideas and archetypes which

would energize your life. They will release the most positive dimensions of your personality and Soul. There will be a seeking for redemption and the way toward this will be revealed in dreams.

LIBRA Although not quite aware of this, you’re quite brave. Others see this and are attracted to your courage. You recognize bravery in others because it already rests within you, at first, like a shadow. You have a great sense of justice and seek, most of the time, peace and harmony. However, there are times when anger takes hold and you lose your way. Think of this as a rainstorm cleansing and clearing the air around you. Love more, no matter what.

SCORPIO Here are questions you might ask yourself. Where is my service, what is my service and whom do I serve? How is my health, and am I tending to my duties with responsibility and care? Do I practice Right Relations with all my relationships, and with all kingdoms? Am I determined, do I have hope? Do I hold my intensity in high regard and am I non-judgmental? Thoughts to ponder during these times.

SAGITTARIUS Most important at this time is your self-expression, your level of creativity, the supreme effort of distinguishing yourself from

all others. Are you seeking something romantic, or attempting to have children or simply pursuing entertainment, fun, pleasure, well-being and happiness? You can be fun to be around these days as long as you don’t get impatient. You are quick to frustration. Don’t wear red or drive fast. And don’t gamble.

CAPRICORN There is a shift or perhaps an acceleration of your foundation and base of operation. Psychological roots, family lineage, your childhood, how you were nurtured, how you learned to nurture come into focus. You are fiercely protective of your family and you actively pursue changes in your home. Be very careful of anyone’s anger, impatience, demands made upon family and loved ones. Make serious plans to play more and be in the garden. What are you growing there?

aspiration and impressions. Your creativity is there.

PISCES You will be wondering what is of value to you as there is a simultaneous give away, sell, and generally release much of what you considered materially valuable in the past. You will find yourself with perhaps a suitcase or two and laptop, nothing more. And you’ll be on your way. This is a significant time for you. Guard your money. Think before spending. Go where you are needed. Have patience with someone. Love more. Time, like love, heals everything. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.

AQUARIUS Notice if thinking accelerates and ideas race through your mind. Writing, the news, communication, speech, connections, making contacts, all become supremely important. They have to be quick though or you lose patience and interest. You become more alert, capable of making snap decision, independence of thought is a primary need. Remember, every other sign thinks and acts much slower than you. Follow up on ideas,

Offshore Drilling Plan on Atlantic Coast Expected Soon

The North Carolina Coastal Federation has joined several other groups in filing a motion for a preliminary injunction to block seismic surveys from beginning in the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf. (daveynin/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff WANCHESE, N.C. – A proposed federal plan from President Donald Trump to allow offshore drilling off the Atlantic coast is expected to be released soon, now that Interior secretary nominee David Bernhardt has had his Senate hearing.

North Carolina and eight other Atlantic Coast states, including South Carolina, are part of a lawsuit against Trump’s offshore drilling plan, which was first drafted last year. They want to stop seismic testing and potential drilling off the East Coast. Michael Flynn is a coastal

advocate for the North Carolina Coastal Federation’s Northeast office. He explains that after the proposed plan is released, there will be a 90-day comment period. Flynn says travel plans from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management may indicate when they expect April 3, 2019

to hold public hearings in North Carolina. “We have been informed that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management reserved a hotel through Ramada Plaza in Kill Devil Hills for May 14 to conduct an open house,” says Flynn. “Then we were also notified that BOEM reserved another hotel in Morehead City for the following day, for May 15.” In 2018, when there was a comment period on the first draft of the plan, BOEM similarly booked hotels to have open houses and hear from the public. The proposed federal plan not only aims to open up the Atlantic coast to offshore drilling, but also the Pacific, Gulf, and Arctic waters. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, is reportedly undecided on the Bernhardt nomination. Supporters of offshore drilling argue it’s needed for the country’s energy independence

and will create jobs. Meanwhile, Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has voiced opposition to offshore drilling. Flynn says some states have passed legislation that curbs offshore drilling. “Some of the states have been taking action, by their introducing legislation that would prohibit the construction of infrastructure to support the oil and gas industry within their state waters,” says Flynn. “We have examples from New Jersey, Maryland, Florida, and Oregon.” California and Delaware also have bans on offshore drilling, and at least eight other states are considering like-minded legislation. No similar bill has been introduced yet in North Carolina. At a federal level, the House Natural Resources Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing Tuesday on several pieces of legislation that would ban offshore drilling. www.desertstarweekly.com

‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” a Sweet Treat at The Pantages

Roald Dahl wrote 40 books that included “Matilda,” “James and the Giant Peach” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” first published in 1946. In 1971 Gene Wilder starred as Willy Wonka, the chocolate factory founder, in the first film version. Then in 2005, Johnny Depp took on the role. In 2013 this tasty little treat arrived on London’s West End, moving on to Broadway in 2017. Now Charlie, Willie Wonka, and the endearing Oompa Loompa factory workers are on a national tour, and they have arrived at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre for a threeweek run, ending April 14. On opening night the audience was sprinkled throughout with youngsters. For the little girl behind us, sitting on a booster cushion to enable her to see better, this was her first play in a big theatre like the Pantages. She was excited. And the lady sitting next to me was equally enthusiastic because she loved reading the book when she was a kid. The story centers on young Charlie Bucket who comes from a poor, but very loving family. On opening night Charlie was performed by Rueby Wood. (Collin Jeffery and Henry Boshart alternate in the role). Charlie dreams of designing delicious chocolate concoctions someday. When he learns that five children throughout the world will get a chance to tour “The Wonka Chocolate Factory” if they find a golden ticket in a Wonka Chocolate Bar he is sure he will be one of the lucky ones. But his heart sinks when four winners are announced on TV. Time is running out, and he has to find the fifth golden ticket, but will he? Of course, he will-or there wouldn’t be a story. Noah Weisberg stars as

Willy Wonka. In Act I he runs the local Willy Wonka chocolate store in London that Charlie visits often. In Act 2 he is transformed into Wonka who opens the doors of his magical factory to the five lucky winners. Charlie is accompanied by his grandpa Joe (James Young) who will be his guardian on this beautiful adventure. The other four winners come from America, Germany and Russia and each one is a spoiled brat who doesn’t follow Wonka’s instructions. As a result, one falls into a vat of chocolate, and the others all come to an unpleasant but humorous end as well. That will teach youngsters to obey--or else. Adults play the four older winners. Charlie is the only winner played by a kid. The show has plenty of music throughout, but the most memorable songs, “The Candy Man” and “Pure Imagination,” were written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1971 film. While each life-sized performer is excellent, it is the lovable little Oompa Loompas who steal the show. Black-clad puppeteers play them on their knees. So the Oompa Loompa heads are real, but their bodies, arms, and legs are little puppets. The effect is great. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” at the Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, ends April 14. Running time: 2 hours, 35 minutes. Tickets: $49-$175. Palm Springs Aerial Tramway To Reopen

NBC PS News Staff Following a nearly twomonth closure and almost $4 million in repair costs and lost revenue, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is poised to reopen Monday. The tramway has been closed since a Feb. 14 storm saturated the area and washed out some streets, including Tramway Road, the main route to the aerial attraction. The first car is scheduled to leave at 10 a.m., with the box office opening at 9:30 a.m. Online ticket sales will resume April 8, tramway officials said. “While the tramway was on track for record attendance in the fiscal year 2018-19, it is estimated that nearly 100,000 visitors were displaced due to the 46-day closure,” spokeswoman Cara Youngman said. “The tram also estimates that the incident resulted in almost $4 million in repair costs

and lost ticket revenues.” In addition to the washedout roadway, the rain caused damage to the attraction’s main power line, along with the Valley Station water tank and Mountain Station roof, Youngman said. Last month, the Mount San Jacinto Winter Park Authority approved $351,071 to fund identified repairs, while also setting aside up to $500,000 for other potential repairs, engineering, and inspections, at the discretion of the general manager. The authority also approved $300,000 to continue paying the tramway’s roughly 70 employees through April 1. “We truly look forward to welcoming back tram visitors beginning April 1st,” Tramway General Manager Nancy Nichols said. “Also, I wish to extend a sincere thank you to the entire Tramway staff for their efforts during our closure.

According to Ruth Meir, Their CEO and Founder, this popular event touches the lives of nearly 30,000 students in junior and senior high schools throughout Riverside County with musical education. The need for reviving music in public schools was the result of cutting back on the arts budget in 1980. Riverside County met the challenge when Ruth Moir, CEO, and Founder of the Steinway Society

educated herself to “to filling the artistic gap” as the funding for music education was fading away. This unfortunate situation was remedied in 2002 when The Steinway Society came to the rescue. The gift of music education has since flourished throughout Riverside County. Nearly 300 guests attended this year’s 17th annual Steinway Society event. The focus was on music from start to finale. Denise Ondishko, pianist and National Board-Certified Teacher, greeted guests as they arrived playing a range of popular and classic favorites. The program began

Messi scores ‘Panenka’ free-kick as Barca beat Espanyol

By Desert Star Staff You’d imagine Lionel Messi is running out of new ground to break with his footballing genius, but the Barcelona star took things up another notch by scoring a ‘Panenka-style’ free-kick against Espanyol in La Liga on Saturday. Messi struck twice inside the last 20 minutes at the Nou Camp to seal the win for Barca in the Catalan derby and put them 13 points clear at the top of La Liga. Messi’s second was a well-taken finish on 89 minutes when he turned home a powerful Malcolm cross from 15 yards out, but it was the Argentine’s first goal that had the internet buzzing. Having struggled to break down a resilient Espanyol backline, Barca won a freekick in Messi territory right on the edge of the box. The proximity of the ball to the goal, however, meant that it would take something special to get the ball up and over the wall and trouble Diego Lopez in the Espanyol goal. But ever the magician, Messi had something special up his sleeve as his dinked the ball softly over the wall in a ‘Panenka’ style generally associated with cheeky penalty kicks. The ploy took Espanyol unawares, as Lopez scrambled across his line and Victor Sanchez dashed back in vain, only the help the ball into the net with his head. Messi was credited with the goal, and his audacious strike had the more than 90,000 fans at the Nou Camp gushing, as well as the internet fawning yet again over a man who has seemingly taken Panenka penalties into a whole new genre. Messi reached yet more key milestones in the game on Saturday, moving up into second outright on the list of all-time Barcelona appearances, ahead of midfield legend Andres Iniesta and behind only Xavi. Messi’s double also meant he had registered at

least 40 goals in each season for the past decade, the testament to the 31-yearolds incredible longevity at the very top of the game. With the victory, Messi

also tied legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas for the most wins in La Liga on 334. Saturday’s match had been billed as a meeting of

Messi against Espanyol’s Chinese star Wu Lei, who joined the club in January and whose appearances are watched by tens of millions in his homeland.

In the end, Wu was named on the bench and was only introduced as a secondhalf substitute, failing to make a significant impact as Messi yet again stole the show.

country-flavored “Your So Fine,” Beatlesque “Know One Knows,” ambitious “Dennis” and poetic “King of the Load.” Those songs and others evoke powerful emotions 45 years after they were recorded by producer Chris Thomas at Caribou Ranch in Colorado. Both albums have been remastered and each includes a number of bonus tracks (such as alternate and work-in-progress mixes). Sadly, Pete Ham — only 27 — would commit suicide shortly after the release of “Wish You Were Here.” Information: RealGoneMusic.com. Artist: Permanent Green Light Title: Hallucinations (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Three O’Clock, Game Theory, dada Tell me more: When I caught the reunited The Three O’Clock at Coachella in April 2013 it brought back a slew of great memories of watching the Paisley Underground band tear it up in area clubs back in Los Angeles in the 1980s. Michael Quercio, lead singer and bassist of The Three O’Clock, also made his mark on the Southern California

musical underground in the ‘90s courtesy of Permanent Green Light; that band is celebrated across the stunning “Hallucinations” available now via Omnivore Recordings. Quercio, singer-guitarist Matt Devine and drummer Chris Bruckner shine across the compilation featuring a mix of choice cuts and terrific sounding four-track cassette demos. The trio’s driving, melodic and harmoniesbolstered songs not only stand the test of time but tear away the years with otherworldly force. Every track on this set is recommended with the driving “(You & I Are The) Summertime” (heard in both its demo form and finished studio recording), infectious “We Could Just Die,” wistful “The Goddess Bunny,” blistering previouslyunheard 4-track demo “Lovely To Love Me” and baroque nugget “Marianne Gave Up Her Hand” among my faves. The 16-page booklet that comes with the audio CD provides a wealth of period photographs, ephemera, and reflections from the three band members along with friends and fans. IOA Championship First Round Notes

By Desert Star Staff Course Setup: 3636—72; 6,527 yards (R1 scoring average: 74.013) Quick Links: • Leaderboard • Online Media Center (groupings, statistics, hole locations, photos, etc.) FIRST ROUND SUSPENDED DUE TO DARKNESS The second round will begin as scheduled tomorrow at 7:20 a.m. PDT. However, one group did not finish the first round and they will restart at 7:45 a.m. on No. 17.

Beaumont and hopes to keep the momentum going in the second round, just like her fellow Boilermakers when they face the University of Virginia tomorrow in Louisville, Ky. with a trip to the Final Four on the line. “They are known for grinding it out to the very end, so I’m proud to represent that,” Kim said. “My putting was very solid, which is great because that is what I have been working on. I’ve also got a lot longer off the tee and that helps no matter the course.”

BOILER UP: PURDUE BASKETBALL’S NCAA TOURNAMENT RUN PROVIDING INSPIRATION FOR KIM The Purdue University men’s basketball team stormed into the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament with an overtime victory over the University of Tennessee last night and in the process, provided Boilermakers alumna August Kim (St. Augustine, Florida) inspiration for her play on the golf course. “My friends and I were watching the game together over the phone and we just said you have to believe until the end,” said Kim, who fired a 6-under par 66 in round one of the IOA Championship presented by Morongo Casino Resort & Spa. “Anything that brings Purdue athletics to the forefront is fantastic. I’ve been working hard and trying to stay focused on the good things. I’m glad it showed up today.” Kim holds the outright advantage after day one in

ROHANNA BALANCING RESPONSIBILITES ON COURSE, AS MOTHER Life has been different for Rachel Rohanna (Marianna, Pennsylvania) and her husband Ethan ever since the birth of their first child Gemelia Grace Virgili last June. Being on the road for extended periods of time makes the special life moments sometimes difficult to enjoy. “It will be nine days apart come Monday when I get back home to see her, it’s tough,” Rohanna said after a bogey-free, 3-under par 69 this afternoon. “The other night I thought I hit my max and was really struggling, but I know she’s in good hands. If I’m being honest, she probably would rather spend more time with him than me, she loves her dad. Of course, I miss her so much, but our family helps, and I FaceTime her every day.” Not only has the separation been hard but finding a balance with a full-time professional golf schedule can be challenging.

By Desert Star Staff NILAND, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents conducting their duties near Niland arrested a woman suspected of smuggling two undocumented aliens on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 6: Border Patrol Agents encountered noon when a 29-year-old woman was driving a Black Ford Expedition from the Indio Border Patrol Station. Agents conducted a vehicle stop

on the Ford and questioned the driver, later identified as Diana Radkova Dragneva. Record checks would later reveal that Dragneva is a Bulgarian National with an expired visa. Furthermore, two men were discovered attempting to conceal themselves in the rear seat of the Ford. It was determined that the men were Mexican Nationals, which were illegally present in the United States. Dragneva and the two men were taken into custody

Even so, Rohanna finds herself tied for eighth after 18 holes at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon, just three shots back of the lead. If the Ohio State University alumna were to pull through this weekend, she would become the first mother to win on the official qualifying tour of the LPGA Tour since Symetra took over as the entitlement sponsor in 2012. “Practicing this past winter was tough because I couldn’t get away too much and it is a totally different mindset now, which I think is extremely important too,” said Rohanna. “You could be the best ball striker or putter, but if you’re not there mentally you will struggle. Regardless, anytime you shoot bogey-free, it’s awesome and I can’t tell you the last time I did. I think there’s a lot more birdies to be had, but I hit the ball so well I really couldn’t ask for better ball striking.” SHERPA HANGS TOUGH IN FIRST START AT PROFESSIONAL EVENT After starting on the back nine Pratima Sherpa (Kathmandu, Nepal) walked off No. 9 green with a 7-over par 79 on the scorecard, her navy blue LPGA Tour “Drive On” hat slightly crooked and lively chatter among her playing partners accompanied by a huge smile beaming from her face. She personifies the new mantra recently instituted by the highest level of women’s professional golf and whether

or not she yet knows it, the 19-year-old made history today. Sherpa became the first Nepali woman to compete in a professional event part of the LPGA Tour family. “It was awesome and the first couple holes I was feeling a little nervous, but I was okay,” said Sherpa, who recorded four birdies, nine bogeys and a double bogey to sit tied for 126th. “Playing with the professional golfers was amazing. I had a good experience and learned many things. I realized that I still have to learn about course management, which is super important, and putting. I was good reading lines, but I had some bad speeds.” NOTABLE QUOTES Harang Lee (-5, T2) on if she found herself competing with playing partner August Kim during the round: “It has been awhile since I had a score like this, so I just tried to make things simple and have fun. At the very end I noticed, but it is also great to see someone making putts and doing things right. I was very relaxed compared to other rounds because I’ve been struggling with my mental game a lot.” Luna Sobron (-5, T2) on staying in a competitive mindset between Monday qualifiers for the LPGA Tour: “It is better to continue competing because now I am only playing Monday qualifiers on the LPGA Tour and waiting for the reshuffle. I will play

this week and next [on the Symetra Tour], do my best. I enjoy the opportunity to play my game and give it my all.” Giulia Molinaro (-3, T8) on recording a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th with a 9-iron from 135 yards: “It was cool, even though we didn’t really see it go in. We saw it disappear and I didn’t want to celebrate until I got up there. It was a good way to finish and good energy for the next day.” PLAYER NOTES August Kim • Kim, 23, is from St. Augustine, Florida and graduated from Purdue University • Won the 2016 Big Ten Championship individual title and set the tournament 54-hole scoring record • First four-time Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar in Boilermakers history • Two-time All-Big Ten First Team performer, also named a WGCA First Team All-American and recipient of Purdue’s Big Ten Medal of Honor as a senior in 2017 • Made the cut in 19-of-32 starts since her rookie year on the Symetra Tour in 2017 with five top-10 finishes and a career-best solo second result at the 2017 Donald Ross Classic • Concluded each of her two seasons in the top-30 on the Volvik Race for the Card money list

Not a Blame Game: Women Demand Equal Pay and Equity

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio — Monday was April Fool’s Day, but an observance today is no joke to working women in Ohio and across the U.S. April 2 marks Equal Pay Day, the date on the calendar representing how far into 2019 a woman has to work to earn the equivalent of a man’s wages in 2018. According to the Economic Policy Institute, women were paid almost 23 percent less than men in 2018, when accounting for race and ethnicity, education, age and location. Kelley Griesmer, president and CEO of the Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, argued it will take squashing decades of implicit bias in society to close the gap. “This isn’t a blame game. It’s not about men setting out to really cause women some sort of pain, but it is all of this bias that has existed for years and years and years,” Griesmer said. “And there has to be an equity lens. The only way you get to true equality is through equity.” Griesmer explained that even if women started earning equal pay today, it would not cancel out the significant wealth gap that’s resulted from pay inequity over time. She believes a discussion is needed on

how women can build wealth in the Public Interest and throughout their lives and become economically secure. Carolyn Casper, president of the Ohio Chapter of the National Organization for Women, noted racial disparities within the gender pay gap also need to be addressed. While women on average earn about 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, for black and Hispanic women it’s about 66 cents. And, Casper added, there are widespread implications. “This is not a women’s issue; this is a human rights issue,” Casper said. “This penalizes our families, it penalizes our community and it’s not an equitable way to treat workers. Our contributions over history have been very significant and they’ve yet to be recognized. “ Casper is hopeful that policies such as the Paycheck Fairness Act will make a difference. The legislation, passed last week by the U.S. House, would ban employers from asking job applicants how much they previously made, forbid businesses from retaliating against workers who share wage information, and increase penalties for equal-pay violations. A brand new, modern painted mural by artist and actor, Joe Dietl

By Desert Star Staff Artist Joe Dietl recently moved to Palm Springs from Los Angeles where he was a successful working actor for decades in Hollywood, having done almost 100 commercials, television guest roles and indie features with top stars like Mike Myers, Jennifer Aniston, Will Ferrell and more. But his move to the desert has allowed him to focus on his painting full time and his gift to the city of Palm Springs is a brand new 8 foot by 16-foot desert

landscape mural on the patio of the iconic “Bit of Country” cafe in Palm Springs. Dietl’s mural will be a unique addition to the main street’s charm due to his use of saturated and hyper-real colors not typically seen in landscape paintings. The mural came about when Dietl and his husband had lunch one day at the cafe where he noticed the large wall on the patio, which used to have a mural, was now painted over in white. He was told that the cafe was under new ownership (which is an

incredible story on its own) and they wanted a “new look.” Dietl, having just had a successful show at the Brain Marki Gallery, presented his artwork to the owner and was asked to paint the new mural right there on the spot! The new owner of the cafe began working at the restaurant when he was 15 years old. Roughly 40 years later, the previous owner decided to retire and gave the business to his devoted employee in a huge gesture of loyalty and generosity. The

mural will serve as both a symbol of a “new beginning” as well as a beautiful new landmark on this major Palm Springs thoroughfare. The unveiling ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 6th at 2:00 pm at the “Bit of Country” cafe and attendees will include the owner, staff and friends and family of

the cafe as well as a “who’s who” of Palm Springs artists, art-lovers and performers. Saturday, April 6th at 2:00 pm “Bit of Country” Cafe 418 S. Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs https://dietlart.com http://brianmarkifineart.com

“Life After”

Sophie Hearn as Alice Carter and Dan’yelle Williamson as Ms. Hopkins. Photo by Jeremy Daniel. By Lisa Lyons It’s not often that the small musical form can be transformed into something that’s truly a game-changer. It happened in the 1950s with “The Fantastics,” in the 1970s with “Godspell” and more recently with “Come from Away” which went on to win its share of Tony Awards. So I don’t think it is going out on a limb to say that “Life After,” the new musical production was written by the outrageously talented Britta Johnson and masterfully directed by the Globe’s own Barry Edelstein, has a similarly excellent chance at duplicating that success. The show was developed in Canada, where it won several Dora Mavor Moore Awards including Outstanding New Musical and Outstanding Production of the 2017-2018 season. “Life After” has an achingly beautiful score that borrows heavily from the intricate lyricism and plaintive tone of the best of Stephen Sondheim. It really is a beautiful piece of theatre that will surprise you with its gut-punch of emotion. You should go see it at any cost before it wends its way to Broadway. The story revolves around 16-year-old Alice (a wonderfully-layered Sophie Hearn) who loses Frank, her pop psychologist author father, in a tragic car accident on the night of her birthday. She’d made plans to be with her friends instead of her Dad that night (hello, she’s a teenager!) and the two have an atypical fight only hours before the accident. And with the usual self-absorption of a teen, Alice thinks that everything that happened that night is her fault. The show moves in and out of Alice’s head, which is buzzing with memories and projections both real and imagined. She’s too immersed in her sorrow to realize that also dealing with their own grief is her mother, Beth (a poignant turn by Mamie Parris www.desertstarweekly.com

) who had put her own career aside to support her husband and raise two kids, and elder daughter Kate (the wonderfully wry Charlotte Maltby) who always felt second best in Daddy’s eyes. They want to just move on, but Alice can’t - her guilt is anchoring her to the past. She can’t move on until she figures out why it had to happen. This all sounds relatively heavy, but the musical is alternately funny, touching and genuinely dazzling. The excellent, multipurpose scenic design by Neil Patel is minimalist with spoton projection design by Sven Ortel that perfectly suits the tone of the show. The lighting design of Tony-winner Japhy Weideman and sound design of Ken Travis really function as almost separate characters, expressing the inner life of the players. Costumes by Linda Cho and choreography by Ann Yee, in particular for The Furies (a three-woman Greek chorus who represent reality), are a perfect complement to the dreamy, sliding set pieces made from transparent fabric that allows the audience to peer into the dream world of the teenage psyche. Kudos go to all performers - especially the oh-soendearing Livvy Marcus as Alice’s nerdy BFF Hannah and Dan’Yelle Williamson as her favorite teacher Ms. Hopkins, who has a deeper connection to Alice than anyone realizes. Her solo “Moving” is a highlight. As the self-absorbed author Frank, Bradley Dean’s soaring tenor voice brings tension and pathos to his duet “Snow” with Alice, the eleven o’clock number that hits you in the heart. The Furies, who play a multitude of roles, are done to perfection by Ximone Rose, Mackenzie Warren, and Charlotte Mary Wen. The show runs 90 minutes with no intermission, but it moves along in a steady rhythm, never dragging. The orchestrations by Lynne Shankel and the excellent orchestra conducted by

Sophie Hearn as Alice Carter (center) with the cast of Life After. Photo by Jeremy Daniel.

Chris Kong, are subtle yet powerful. Author Britta Johnson wrote both the libretto and the score and her equally talented sister Anika Johnson serves as dramaturg on this story that has some basis in their own lives. Some of the images will stay with you long after such as the final, spectacular picture

with Alice surrounded by pulsating, falling snowflakes, is an apt metaphor for the entire production. In the midst of great pain and emotional growth, there are moments of perfect beauty that make the whole damn thing worth it. As the lights dim, one feels joy and hope, not something you would expect from a musical

that’s about love and loss. “Life After” runs until April 28 at the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center at the Old Globe in San Diego’s beautiful Balboa Park. For tickets and information on parking, contact www.TheOldGlobe. org or call 619-23-GLOBE.
