Greek Prime Minister Visits Animal Shelter on World Stray Day By Pam Price Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis paid a different visit to the shelter for homeless and abandoned animals in Ilioupoli, near Athens, on April 4 on World Stray Animals Day. Mitsotakis had the opportunity to meet the dogs hosted in the shelter, many of which are trained to be adopted. The Prime Minister was also informed about the challenges faced by the officials and volunteers at the shelter, which the Zoophilic Association of Ilioupoli manages, and congratulated them for the animals’ love and care. “In view of the World Stray Day, I wanted to be with you, to thank you for the great work you are doing and to discuss, of course, the new bill for pets, which we will put
to public consultation within the next ten days. We will wait with great interest for your comments, and I believe that it may be voted by the end of May,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking to the shelter’s former volunteer, Emy Papagiannopoulou, and the Mayor of Ilioupolis, George Hatzidakis. Mitsotakis stated that he has personally dealt with pets and that the bill is a product of extensive preparation, in consultation with all stakeholders, but looks forward to fruitful participation in public consultation, especially of “front line” people on animal welfare issues. The Prime Minister happily joined his voice with the staff members of the shelter regarding animal adoptions, urging the citizens to lovingly

How to Combat Social Isolation
E
FAMILY FEATURES
ven before COVID-19 limited social contact with friends, family and colleagues, many adults experienced loneliness and depression due to limited contact with others. Now, a year after the pandemic forced many people into even greater levels of isolation, the issue of social isolation is especially prevalent in Americans over the age of 50. Despite the physical implications of a global pandemic, research shows the mental health stakes are high, too. A nationwide survey, commissioned by Barclays, found that half of Americans over the age of 50 said the isolation from their friends and family has been more challenging than concerns over health risks they may face. Social isolation has provided plenty of time for Americans to reflect on their priorities. The majority of Americans surveyed (90%) have re-evaluated their post age-50 goals and put spending more time with family at the top of their lists. In fact, the most common first thing 50-plus Americans will do once COVID-19 is over is to see and spend time with their families (41%). “While restrictions are beginning to ease, many older adults are still isolated from friends and family, and that takes a toll on their mental well-being” said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, president of the AARP Foundation. “We must do all we can to help older adults, who have suffered greatly during COVID-19, strengthen the social connections that are so essential to their ability to lead longer, healthier lives.” For example, AARP Foundation’s Connect2Affect platform equips older adults with the tools they need to stay physically and mentally healthy and connected to their communities. The AARP Essential Rewards Mastercard from Barclays is helping fund the foundation’s work to increase social connection with donations based on new accounts and eligible purchases, up to $1 million annually. A little creativity and a commitment to filling time productively can help reduce the strain of being alone until it’s safer to resume social activities.

Use technology to connect with loved ones. Video chats and traditional phone calls can help you feel connected even when you can’t be together in person. While a drop-in call can be fun, consider arranging regular visits with kids and grandkids. If you schedule calls throughout the week, you’ll have something regular to look forward to and can benefit from a check-in that affirms everyone is healthy and safe. Make time for physical activity. Staying closer to home may mean you’re not getting the exercise you once did, but it’s important for your health to stay active. Regularly using your muscles helps keep your body strong, and even light physical activity a few times each week can help keep your cardiovascular system fit for better heart health. Regular exercise can also provide a range of positive mental health outcomes, including reduced stress, anxiety and depression, and improved memory.

While your limited social calendar may afford you some extra time, inquire with local nonprofits about how you can contribute to their causes. Especially as funding for charitable organizations has dropped, volunteers are still essential to most nonprofit organizations, whether the help comes in person or virtually. Even from a distance, you may be able to help with tasks like making calls to donors, assisting with mailings or planning fundraising campaigns. Learn a new hobby or skill. perform tasks that currently require humans to perform. Learning to work with Robotics is the area of education needed for future job growth. Graduates today must incorporate robotics training into their plans for their futures. Robots are becoming more intelligent than people and make fewer mistakes, and they don’t get bored! Most companies are moving toward this to cut costs. Adapting to this change is going to require us to understand how man-machine partnerships are going to evolve. Our goals must be to use our high-level cognitive ability to anticipate what parts of our work will be fully automated and what parts of our work will be so hard for machines to do that man-machine partnership is the most practical approach. With that in mind, we can adapt our skills to become better than our peers at leveraging man-machine partnerships. Estimates of how many jobs all together that the robots will wipe out and when vary wildly. Economists say somewhere between 9% and 47% of the West’s workers could lose jobs to automation over the next two or so decades. Some of the first jobs to be replaced will be middle management unless the employee works along with the Robot. Some of the jobs that will be placed may surprise you. The list includes pharmacists, Lawyers and Paralegals, Drivers, Astronauts, Store Clerks, Soldiers, Rescuers, BabySitters, Warehouse workers, Reporters, Sports
Writers, Journalists, Authors and Announcers, and Commodity Salespeople. All of these jobs have required a lot of training in the past but are easily programmable. Whenever the job requires danger, Robotics will be used to replace those of a rescuer or soldier, just as we witness today, how a robot is used to remove a bomb or a dangerous person. Writing is difficult even for the best of authors, but not report writing. Machines can be taught to read data, pattern-match images or video, analyze almost any kind of research materials and create very readable (or announce-able) writing. Text-to-speech systems are evolving so quickly and sound very realistic. Before long, we will listen to play-by-play commentators- done 100% by robots. Financial writers will also find their days numbered.
Robo-accounting is in its infancy, but it is incredible at dealing with accounts payable and receivable, inventory control, auditing, and several other accounting functions that humans used to be needed to do. Becoming a doctor was once the highestpaid occupation. Robots make amazing doctors, diagnosticians, and surgeons. IBM’s Watson is teaming up with a dozen US hospitals to offer advice on the best treatments for a range of cancers and helping to spot early-stage skin cancers. Ultraprecise robo-surgeons are used now for everything from knee replacement surgery to vision correction. This trend is continuing at an incredible pace. I am not sure how robodoc’s bedside manner will be, but you could program a “Be warm and kind” algorithm, and
Who Handles Those Termites? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL
Dear Kelly: I live in a townhouse. My neighbor had termites and my other neighbor on the other side suspects them as do I. We were told by the association that it is our responsibility to take care of them. It just seems to me that termites come from the outside in and should be the responsibility of the association. Could you shed some light on this for me. M.N., San Clemente Dear Mr. Richardson: Does the association have any responsibility to handle a termite problem originating from trestles (wood patio overhangs) that were originally installed by the builder and are part of the architectural design of the townhouses? Termites are entering the home due to infestation of dry rot and termites in these structures. R.M., Coto De Caza
Dear M.N. and R.M.: Termite infestations in attached housing affect not only those living in affected buildings but potentially affect all assessment-paying members if the damage requires expensive repairs to common area framing. Allocation of responsibility is provided by Civil Code Section 4780(a) which states that in condominium, stock cooperative, or community apartment associations, the association is responsible for repair and maintenance of common area termite issues, unless the CC&Rs say otherwise. You each describe your homes as “townhouses,” but that describes the homes’ architectural configuration, not the type of property ownership you have. A townhouse could be a planned development, condominium, stock cooperative or community apartment property. If the CC&Rs are silent and your association is a condominium (you own a “unit”), stock cooperative (you own a share of stock) or community apartment April 7, 2021
(you own an undivided equal fractional interest of the entire project) then under this statute common area termite treatment and repair is HOA responsibility. Many associations are built in the townhouse style which are planned developments and owners’ deeds recite that they own a “lot.” In such associations under Civil Code Section 4780(b) the owners are responsible to handle their own termite prevention and repair issues, (again, unless the CC&Rs state otherwise). Attached planned developments such as townhouse buildings present a problem for the individual owners, because they cannot tent their entire building without permission of each of the owners in that building. This can make it difficult for anything other than spot treatment to occur. Per Civil Code Section 4780(b), a majority of all the members can vote to allocate this responsibility to the association, or the association members may well vote to amend their CC&Rs to accomplish the same thing. Best regards, Kelly
the robo-doc would treat you that way. If and when robots start eliminating whole classes of employment, things could become stressful. Most people like to work and be paid for it. Most of us derive self-worth, satisfaction, and dignity through our paid labors, even if the actual job may be routine. We need our work to be happy and healthy, and we need jobs to pay for our dreams. As Socrates said, “the only thing constant is change, “… and we must embrace change. Dear Kelly: My HOA is not very diligent about termite prevention. I had subterranean termites come in through a crack in the slab foundation and ruin my wood floor. The HOA declines any responsibility for my floor because it is on the other side of the slab. They drilled holes in the slab and filled the cracks with epoxy. Do I have any recourse for the amount spent to repair my floor? Thanks, T.M., Rancho Bernardo Dear T.M.: Your association may not recognize the fact that the termites entered through a crack in the slab, which crack the HOA has apparently agreed is HOA responsibility. Remind them that the problem originated from a common area issue and hopefully you all can work things out. Best, Kelly Kelly G. Chauvin Trial Requires Deeper Reflection for Social Change

By Mike Moen MINNEAPOLIS -Testimony resumes this morning in Derek Chauvin’s trial, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing George Floyd. Some early testimony has renewed conversation about the historical mistreatment of Black people in the U.S. TaLisa Carter, assistant professor in the Department of Justice, Law, and Criminology at American University, said while watching the court proceedings might be traumatic for some, it can help propel uncomfortable but essential conversations about the issues. She sees the case as confirming what scholars have long talked about. “There are bodies of literature that support the realities that these people are talking about,” Carter explained. “There’s bodies of literature that discuss the April 7, 2021
intersection of being a Black man, interacting with police, having addiction issues.” She hopes anyone watching the trial will reflect on these more complex topics rather than simply taking sides. Racial and legal scholars predict the case’s outcome will serve as a defining moment in U.S. history. Carter suggested more profound reflections surrounding the trial could help lead to social change that’s more sustainable, not just a knee-jerk reaction. “When we appreciate the nuance, right, these ripples, then we can recognize that change isn’t gonna be either/or, A or B, right?” Carter argued. “It has to be pervasive; it has to be saturation.” She pointed to the domino effect Floyd’s murder has had in the past year, including global
protests calling for an end to systemic racism. Social justice advocates say the geographical backdrop also is essential, as Minnesota has some of the worst racial disparities in the U.S. Carter added the trial serves as a reminder that an open mind is vital to understanding all the deep layers embedded in the evidence and Testimony. “It’s really important, just as human beings, to say, ‘Just because I haven’t experienced it doesn’t make it untrue for others,’” Carter contended. Similar sentiments were noted after one of the witnesses, a Black teenager, testified when she saw Chauvin with his knee on Floyd’s neck; it made her think it could have been members of her own family.

“Moffie” - The Danger of Being Gay in 1981 South Africa MOFFIE is a powerful film about a young gay man who is conscripted into the South African Defence Forces (SADF) during the scourge of Apartheid, which is a secondary subject. To give you a frame of reference, during this period, the punishment for being a homosexual, considered by the army to be subversive, was medical torture. The “cure” was administered by Dr. Aubrey Levin’s* Aversion Project. Despite being warned by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that what they were doing was a violation of human rights, the “treatment” for homosexual soldiers was administered at Ward 22 on a military base. When the aversion “treatment” didn’t work, surgical procedures were performed to alter their genitals, many of which were botched and sometimes resulted in death. MOFFIE, a derogatory Afrikaans term for gay, is masterfully helmed by South African director Oliver Hermanus from the screenplay he wrote with Jack Sidey, adapted from an autobiographical book by André Carl van der. The protagonist is 18-year-old white South African Nicholas van der Swart, compellingly brought to life by Kai Luke Brummer, who gives a quiet, spellbinding performance. Along with other boys his age, he has been conscripted to serve in the army for two years to train to fight the border war between South West Africa and Angola. He is a beautiful, soft-spoken young man with delicately etched
features, and he knows he must be constantly vigilant to guard against being found out. As a farewell gift, his father, Peet, sympathetically played by Remano De Beer, gives his son a girlie magazine as a goodbye gift. Although he has never discussed his son’s sexual preference, perhaps he thinks it will camouflage his son’s real sexual identity and serve to have him pass as one of the boys. Riding on a train with many young recruits, Nicholas witnesses them shouting at a black man sitting on a bench. They throw garbage at him and call him the “N” word. To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the WILL or estate, or both of CATHERINE B. TYBOR. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by TYNA MARIE TYBOR in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that TYNA MARIE TYBOR be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: May 25, 2021 at 8:45AM in Dept. PS3 located at 3255 E. TAHQUITZ CANYON WAY, PALM SPRINGS, CA 92262. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court.
