‘Jobs-Housing Crisis?’ Self-Sustaining Community Project to Deliver Jobs, Social Bonds, Hope By Desert Star Staff Huntington Beach, CA —A housing crisis is about to explode across the United States. Recent studies show millions face evictions as unemployment continues and government rental assistance runs dry. More than 4 million

people across the nation say they fear evictions or foreclosures in the coming months. The situation is difficult as the cost of housing has far outpaced wages in most areas. The crisis has overwhelmed state governments and social service agencies. By some

estimates, rent debt stands at $23 million, or about $3,800 per average household. “We recognize that the need for housing is at a crisis level, especially for veterans, working families, and the elderly,” says Nick Saifan, chairman of Vendaval

Corp. “Once the rental and mortgage assistance programs end, we’re going to see a lot of people across America in need of a new place to live, while many others may end up on the street.” According to Nick, this is a crucial moment when all

American communities must come together. The problem is too big for the government to solve alone. Private enterprise needs to help. The lack of affordable housing can be addressed in many ways. Needed is a combined effort between the government and Continues on Page 3

Covid-19 vaccines will be MANDATORY for the US military

By Desert Star Staff US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he would seek White House permission to mandate Covid-19 vaccinations for all military members by midSeptember or when the jabs get regulatory approval, whichever comes first. “I will seek the president’s approval to make the vaccines mandatory no later than midSeptember, or immediately upon” their licensing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “whichever comes first,” Austin said in a memo to

all members of the US military on Monday, previewed by AP. “I will not hesitate to act sooner or recommend a different course to the President if l feel the need to do so. But, to defend this Nation, we need a healthy and ready force,” he added. The three Covid-19 vaccines – made by Pfizer/ BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, respectively – recognized by the US government have been authorized for emergency

Pascual Sisto’s ‘John and the Hole’ Misses the Mark Psychopaths have been cinematically fascinating characters as portrayed in a sampling of films such as ‘Psycho,’ ‘A Clockwork Orange,’ ‘No Country for Old Men,’ ‘Taxi Driver,’ ‘The Silence of the Lambs,’ ‘American Psycho,’ ‘Full Metal Jacket,’ Cape Fear,’ ‘Misery,’ ‘Badlands’ ‘Primal Fear,’ ‘There Will Be Blood,’ and ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley.’ This brings me to my review of first-time director Spanish visual artist Pascual Sisto’s ‘John and the Hole.’ Written by Nicolás Giacobone, who along with Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Alexander Dinelaris, and Armando Bó, was one of the writers of ‘Birdman,’ which won three Academy Awards. Unfortunately, this debut film is far from award material. The story centers around sociopath-in-training 13-yearold John, nicely played by Charlie Shotwell. He lives in a palatial New England home with his dad Brad, played by the wonderful Michael C. Hall, his sweet mom Anna, characterized by Jennifer Ehle, and his older sibling Laurie, played by Taissa Farmiga. On the surface, we see a happy, if not restrained, family dynamic. John seems like a normal but very quiet kid, who loves skateboarding, is a voracious tennis player, and plays Chopin pieces on the piano. He and his best friend Peter (Ben O’Brien) spend lots of time on the phone tossing “F” bombs back and forth. As with many teenagers, his parents have to drag an answer out of him practically. When he finally responds, his replies are in monotone, answering with one or two words at most. At dinner, dad tells his son to look under his bed where he

finds a drone, thus beginning a creepy, unconvincing narrative. John takes his new toy into the woods, where he comes upon a giant hole which his father later explains is an unfinished, abandoned bunker, two to three stories deep. Climbing a tree to retrieve his stuck drone, he has a nasty fall which he nurses by taking one of mom’s pain pills and soaking himself in the family pool. He and his sister have a typical sibling relationship, with John going out of his way to torment her. It’s about at this point the film turns dark as we see this quiet kid wheeling his drugged, unconscious father in a wheel barrel heading for the hole where we presume he dumps him in. Let’s not worry about where this skinny kid gets the strength to put his dad and later, yes, his mother and sister into the very same wheel barrel and dump them into the bunker as well. And yes. Let’s not worry that eventually, besides being hungry and somewhat disheveled, not a broken bone in sight. Because of the depth and isolation of the hole, screaming for help is just a waste of vocal energy. John is now independent of any parental restrictions and takes over as head of household, doing forbidden behavior such as drinking directly out of an orange juice container. With access to credit cards, he’s driving the family car to the ATM, where he withdraws several hundred dollars. His mom’s friend Paula (Tamara Hickey) swings by to pick her up for rehearsal. John very calmly tells her she left to be with her father, who has had a heart attack. Now being just borderline sociopath, with emphasis on borderline, John

brings his family food and water, which they quickly consume. Wanting some company, our anti-hero invites his friend Peter to stay with him for a few days. They gorge on food, play video games, and create a dangerous pool contest where one simulates drowning by holding the other’s head underwater until they see the Virgin Mary. At this point, it’s unclear if John will forcefully keep his friend’s head underwater. On his own, he stops strangers and asks weird questions: “What’s it like to be an adult?” or “Why are people allergic to nuts?” Meanwhile, back in the bunker, the starving mom tries eating a banana peel which doesn’t go down so quickly. Dear friend Paula returns to the house and decides to call her friend on the cell phone, which, yes, rings inside the house. John quickly explains that she forgot to take it with her. Suspicious that something is not right, she calls the police,

who walk around and does not see anything untoward, drive away. Knowing the family hasn’t eaten in several days, he sends down an assortment of food, including risotto and wine. With his feet dangling over the edge, he joins them in the meal, playing a recording of one of his Chopin pieces, serenading them as they savagely attack the food. Going back during the night and seeing his family huddled together to keep warm, he sheds a tear or two and, in the next scene, lowers down an escape ladder for his suffering family. In the next scene, dad fills up the hole with mounds of dirt, and as bizarre as it sounds, the family is now having dinner in their beautiful glass-enclosed dining room with inane, subdued chatter. Throughout the film, Paul Ozgur’s compelling camera work takes us on a visual adventure through the nooks and crannies of the opulent home, John at play, and the imprisoned family.

Survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and family members of victims recently disinvited Biden from memorial services marking the 20th anniversary of the tragic events. In a letter, the family members and victims called for the president to release previously classified documents related to September 11, claiming there could be information implicating Saudi Arabia in the attack. “We understand President Biden’s desire to mark the solemn occasion of the 20th anniversary at Ground Zero; however, we cannot in good faith – and with veneration to

L-R: Michael C. Hall as dad ‘Brad,’ Taissa Farmiga as ‘Laurie,’ and Jennifer Ehle as ‘Anna’ in Pascual Sisto’s psychological thriller ‘JOHN AND THE HOLE.’ One would be hard-pressed to find any similarity between Macaulay Culkin’s ‘Home Alone,’ which centered around a heroic young man saving the family home to ‘John and the Hole,’ a destructive, emotionless young man who perpetrates cruel punishment on his family in his quest to experiment living an adult-free life. A good question would be what allowed him to commit such a potentially deadly act in his DNA makeup, and why are there no consequences to his behavior? As an audience, we are asked to suspend our disbelief, but in this case, with all the plot holes (no pun intended), that’s asking way too much. The office of US Attorney Audrey Strauss in Manhattan announced on Monday that the FBI is reviewing the agency’s earlier claims that documents being sought by family members were privileged. As the papers are inspected, they will be released on a “rolling basis as expeditiously as possible.” Family members and survivors have claimed that documents related to investigations into the attacks could provide links to the Saudi government, a connection it has long denied.

What to Expect When You Return to the Office By Desert Star Staff As life returns to regular, many companies and organizations are heading back to the office using a hybrid model or are beginning to talk about doing so. Under these plans, employees split their time between working in-person and working from anywhere. If your employer has announced this will be happening soon, you may be feeling apprehensive about the transition. Here are a few things to expect: • Flexible workspaces: With fewer employees coming to work in person at any given time, your company may reduce the size of the physical office as a cost-

Whereas you may have previously been assigned a personal workstation, you may now find your company “hot-desking,” in which workstations are shared and used by different employees at different times. • New tech tools: According to experts, employees can expect to see new tech tools enter the picture. “Tools that provide business leaders with insights, not an oversight, and build out on the tools your company already uses, are going to smooth out communication, collaboration and workflow issues during the transition,” says Michele Havner, director of marketing at Eturi, the maker of Motiv, an app for smalland mid-sized businesses. In Motiv, a mobile dashboard that delivers important productivity metrics to CEOs, managers and leaders, the tech integrates with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Available through the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, you can learn more by visiting motivapp.com. • Watercooler talk: Some people will return to the office ready to pick up right where they left off, scheduling lunches, coffees and happy hours with their colleagues, whom they consider friends. For others, the in-person socialization that was once a staple of office life may take longer to adjust to.

Know that everyone will have their feelings about returning to the office and try to be empathetic to others, wherever they stand on the issue. • Additional change: As your employer learns what is and isn’t working with the new hybrid model, they may make additional adjustments in the weeks and months ahead. Whether it’s introducing a new rule that all staff members be in the office every Monday, or the addition of a weekly team

meeting every Wednesday morning, being prepared for such potential changes can help you avoid being thrown off guard down the line. After over a year of working from home, the prospect of returning to the office can be exciting, nerve-wracking or both. HOROSCOPES ARIES

Many things are being revealed to you concerning your gifts, talents and goodness. Revelations about your true self will occur as you go about your daily work. You will notice compassionate intentions, aspirations to serve others with care and dedication. You realize that care of self is important and must come before tending to others. Then you can uplift those in need and your spiritual self is uplifted too. You’re climbing Jacob’s Ladder.

TAURUS Your mind, which always seeks illumination (its spiritual task) has opened to new thoughts, ideas, terminology, spiritual sciences and the arts. You are becoming a mediator within groups as well as an artist. You continually question the root cause of everything and you’re very aware when people break the rules. You know the study of astrology and the wisdom teachings are our present-day guides. Contact everyone through the stars in the night sky.

GEMINI Sometimes through your humor you become the star of the show. The presence you project to the world now needs to be that of the teacher. Call upon your opposite sign of Sagittarius (the professor) for assistance. Whereas you could be hidden and silent (well, sometimes),

your intelligence and creativity are being called out. You realize it’s good to pursue pleasure, to be gifted, and to be ahead of everyone else. It takes several planets and stars to get us to this place.

CANCER You have the stamina and strength, courage and fortitude to be with people who offer you kindness and care. When these are offered to you in adequate measure, you then offer the same to others. It’s time to recognize your deepest hopes and wishes and to be consciously aware that new values and priorities are forming within you. Later you will be called to demonstrate these new values. The powerful people you meet reflect the power within.

LEO Usually you’re attempting to understand yourself in terms of talents, gifts and creativity. Silently you want and need to be recognized and praised. The more praise you receive, the quicker you evolve and grow. In coming times you’ll seek beyond yourself into the heavens, the cosmic mysteries, and even the Diamond Sutras. Realizing much of what we’re attached to is transitory, you will establish yourself in ways quite different than before. You’re developing courage, the heart of the Lion. Look for Regulus.

VIRGO

Does it feel as if your finances and resources are at a standstill? Is some resource important and valuable to you seemingly too far away? What I suggest is an accounting and filing of all your monies in a folder or book. Set it next to your Gratitude Journal. Perhaps you’re already organized in this way. Virgos are so good at organization. The important question is one of values. In what way do you value yourself and others? Value of self brings forth personal, spiritual and financial freedom.

LIBRA The routines and schedules you thought important, both at work and in relationships, are sometimes the ones you want to walk away from. You know that freedom to choose your own way is most important but for a long time you tried to compromise and accommodate. Now you are able to exhibit the uniqueness of self which was hidden away for so long. Tradition for you has its place only if beauty accompanies it. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, beauty follows you.

SCORPIO The next stage of your development is emerging. No longer can you be the quiet one. What must you begin to do? Looking at your chart, Uranus (in Taurus, your opposite sign) says the study of the Ageless wisdom teachings explains all the

world’s secrets and mysteries. They will deepen your already religious inclinations. In your group of people you become a leader. And so it’s important to communicate real information to those listening. The real information is in the mysteries.

SAGITTARIUS New archetypes stream through your mind, creating a new sense of identity. All old patterns are being shaken up, torn down, set aside. Thought forms, beliefs, what you previously depended upon, are dropping away from you, not looking back. Perhaps a bit of tears are shed, sometimes a heavy heart. Then sadness emerges and grief. Then after a time, a sense of happiness and joy appear. A sense of freedom is felt, a new direction is sensed. It’s a journey toward self-awareness. We are all in Noah’s Ark.

CAPRICORN The time to come will allow you the recognition you seek. You experience life differently than others. Sometimes your presence and leadership, your creativity and service to the world create controversy and agitation in others. Know that Capricorn is a leadership sign, a sign of structure and rule of law. In our times now these virtues are being rebelled against. When disharmony occurs, the chaos that ensues will summon and brings forth a new harmony. Continue to lead.

AQUARIUS Your mind is experiencing original insights, thoughts flashing at the speed of light, and ideas that only Aquarians understand. Your sense of humor has expanded too. With these gifts, you may introduce new ethics, concepts, educational ideas, and information to the world beginning in your personal day to day life. Be aware that it’s risky to do this. Aquarians come from the future, a golden age. Your entire life is a service.

PISCES You realize you’re different than most. Although you attempt to walk the straight line of tradition, it simply doesn’t work. Those lines disappear. You’re greatly talented though others may not recognize this. You are unpredictable and curious, having the ability for leadership. (Pluto as Soul ruler). So much change has occurred the past five years, you feel disorganized and deconstructed. Yes, it’s a preparation for the breakdown then the new order to come. Branding Your Business By Janice Gough Many of us are re-starting our businesses, and along with that, we have had plenty of time to make changes. Many people are changing their careers entirely. You may have concerns about the new marketplace and how to approach it, and understanding potential clients’ needs. Your attention to specifics is what will differentiate your business. If you can clearly and succinctly communicate how you are different from others in your field, It will make it easier for your ideal client to find you and you to find them. Your unique perspective is your personal brand. Your brand is what makes you. It is why clients choose to work with you. When you first meet a prospective client, you must be prepared to grab their interest with a short dialog telling who you are and what services or products you offer. In sales, this is referred to as your “elevator” speech. (This term was created by a famous insurance agent who worked in New York Life

and met most of his prospective clients on the elevators.) You must be prepared to tell your story in a New York minute! You are providing a brief summary of what you do or can offer. By keeping your approach simple, straightforward, and easy to understand, you will gain their interests and, most likely, a new connection. Always close by asking for a time to meet. It will enable you to obtain their contact information and make you a more serious contender for their business. The following are ways to help you define your unique perspective and then package and communicate it to your potential clients and your existing client base. First, you must identify and explain what makes you different than your competition. Start by identifying your ideal client. What stage of life are they in. What is their average net worth? Where do they work? What industry do they represent? Where are they located? What is their position? By defining who your target market is, will provide clarity in developing your message. The more precise and

pinpointed you are, the easier you will get their attention. Consumers have gotten away from starting a business relationship, sometimes by seeing you in an expensive ad. However, there is nothing that can replace meeting someone personally. Inperson networking in social or professional events provides a greater possibility to connect for a business’s appointment. Using Social media to

connect can help to keep you fresh in their mind. Being a member of your business associate’s group and supporting your Chamber of Commerce can put you in front of many possible clients and referrals. It is time to re-boot your business, and when you are in front of a prospective client, being prepared will provide you with the most significant advantage. Therefore, the definition of

My Peeping Doorbell Camera, and Where is MY Parking Space?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Kelly: Because of the type of work I do at home, I was required to install a security system in my condominium including a front door camera. My neighbor across the walkway is captured daily in recordings which show numerous occasions of various at-home liaisons with persons who are not his wife, and on other occasions coming home intoxicated. Should I share these videos with the HOA? Is my camera an invasion of his privacy? Unfortunately, because of proximity and motion detection I cannot reduce the range of the video. Am I liable if I ignore what the camera records? Would the HOA be liable if he gets into an auto accident while drunk? JP, San Diego

Dear J.P.: The advent of low-cost “doorbell” or other internet-connected security cameras has created a new set of privacy concerns. These cameras record not only high-quality video, but also conversations of persons having no idea that their conversations are being overheard and recorded. Some of my clients have adopted rules regarding such cameras, restricting cameras from monitoring neighboring back yards or windows in their view. I think most would agree that there is no expectation of privacy in common area walkways or hallways, but if you shared videos of your neighbor’s activities it might be considered an invasion of his privacy (as to his comings and goings). I do not think you have a duty to share the videos with anyone unless they record a crime, in which case you should report

the incident to law enforcement. I cannot conceive of a way in which the HOA could be liable for not stopping a resident from drinking and driving, since the HOA probably does not have the power to do so. Best regards, Kelly

Dear Mr. Richardson: Can the Board ignore the CC&Rs? The CC&Rs say that each lot comes with a parking space, and the association has permanently assigned one parking space for each owner, but due to poor structural design, my designated parking space is unusable due to impossible access for a mediumsized vehicle. I asked the board to designate me another space and was rejected. What to do? In fairness to the Board, I think remedying the problem would cost the association

several thousand dollars. Best Regards, P.F., Marin County

Dear P.F.: CC&Rs are the top governing document, and all the other governing documents must give way to the CC&Rs, per Civil Code Section 4205. CC&Rs must not conflict with state law and are essentially an agreement binding all homeowners together. Associations are expected to obey the governing documents and to consistently apply them, or could be in breach of those documents. So, hopefully the board will consult the HOA’s lawyer to determine if the HOA is required to make sure you have a functional space. However, you may not be informed of the advice, since legal advice given to the board is typically considered

By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles, CA, — Personal trauma can take many forms, including what Dr. Randall Bell calls the “difficult Ds”: death, divorce, disease, disaster, and destruction. But any circumstances that you’re having difficulty processing and moving beyond can be considered trauma, he explains. “Trauma affects us all at some point in time,” Dr. Bell said. “But the good news is, we can get through it and actually heal from it.” In his latest book, PostTraumatic Thriving: The Art, Science, & Stories of Resilience, Dr. Bell draws upon his decades of experience and scientific research to deliver a three-stage framework — Dive, Survive and Thrive — that can help readers process their trauma, make the conscientious decision to accept help and move forward, and eventually, tap into the energy generated by that trauma to achieve more than they ever thought possible. In Post-Traumatic Thriving, he shares stories of real people (many of them, like Leo Fender, are familiar) who were able to move beyond trauma and thrive in the aftermath, including: • A deaf man with a glass eye invented the electric guitar and became a household name, remarkably wealthy and most importantly, happy. • A convicted murderer took

She has rebuilt it all back and more. • A man set to go to the Olympics had his hopes dashed by Jimmy Carter and went on to build a worldwide business empire. Los Angeles Artists On Tap

In this column the focus is on four Los Angeles area artists. All have newly-available or soon-to-be released titles definitely worth a listen. Artist: Los Lobos Title: Native Sons (New West Records) You might like if you enjoy: Los Lobos, the Mavericks, the Blasters Tell me more: East Los Angeles-spawned legends Los Lobos revisit the music of a diverse field of their influential musical heroes on the newlyreleased “Native Sons.” The quintet (singer-guitarist David Hidalgo, singer-guitarist Louie Pérez, Jr.,singer-guitaristkeyboardist Cesar Rosas, singer-bassist Conrad Lozano and saxophonist-keyboardist Steve Berlin) honors 13 classics by infusing their own signature style into each of the wellcrafted remakes. Thinks kick off with an infectious run through of Thee Midniters’ “Love Special Delivery” (bolstered by the blend of horns, freewheeling drums and lead guitar). Classic rock favorites from Buffalo Springfield get the dual treatment via Los Lobos’ intoxicating take on “Bluebird” and Americanaflavored “For What It’s Worth.” Other highlights include a beautiful and nuanced version of Jackson Browne’s “Jamaica Say You Well,” a rousing jump blues reading of Percy Mayfield’s “Never No More” and soulful take on The Beach Boys classic “Sail On, Sailor.” Long a champion of Chicano rock,

mariachi and música norteña, Los Lobos performs a rollicking version of Lalo Guerrero’s “Los Chucos Suaves” and the tender ballad “Dichoso.” Los Lobos’ stunning version of War’s “The World is a Ghetto” features several guests, including Little Willie G. (who sang on the title track back in 1972) along with Jacob G. (Willie’s son), R&B artist Barrence Whitfield and world class percussionist Camilo Quinones. Los Lobos also ties the thematic journey together via the inclusion of the original “Native Son.” Information: LosLobos.org.

Tony Marsico, guitarists Loren Molinare and Mark Tremalgia, singer Ron Young and drummer Rob Klonel bring a rootsy power and fun spirit to the songs, with a slew of great guests adding additional wizardry to the tracks. The classic rock-mining “On The Tilt A Whirl,” hard-hitting “Nine Million Tears,” heavy Texas blues stomp “Son of the Blues,” gentle “Sad Sadie” (featuring guest vocals from John Doe), Southern blues rocker “Let Me Down” (featuring guitarist Dave Alvin and accordion player David Hidalgo) and rowdy “54 Knockouts” (with sax great Steve Berlin of Los Lobos) are among the winning originals on the Cruzados return. The album draws to a killer close with the hypnotic blues rocker “Rock That Boat,” featuring some killer blues harp from Jimmy Z and the collective power of all five members of Cruzados. Information: CruzadosBand.com.

Julie Christensen introduced their groundbreaking project via “Time Stands Still” (released in 1984 via Enigma Records). The end of the duo’s marriage around the time of their “A Handful of Sand” release might have ended the story of Divine Horsemen for good, but the two remained in touch and on good terms. A series of fortuitous events led the two artists to reform Divine Horsemen to record the forthcoming album. Parsons, John Doe Tell me more: While the world has changed in monumental and challenging ways since I See Hawks in L.A. released their previous album “Hawks with Good Intentions” in September 2019, the Los Angeles troupe’s forthcoming album “On Our Way” (coming Aug. 27, 2021) offers the perfect chance to reconnect with the beauty around us. On the alt country quartet’s “On Our Way” the efforts of singerguitarist Rob Waller, multiinstrumentalist/backing vocalist Paul Lacques, bassist-vocalist Paul Marshall and percussionistvocalist Victoria Jacobs to stay connected by songwriting via FaceTime and completing recording remotely during the pandemic astound. This is a beautiful and soul-stirring set of songs that defies the angry shouting heard on 24-hour cable news in favor of songs about “Geronimo, Muhammad Ali, the Faulknerian dilemma, in language sometimes more abstract and mirroring than narration” (according to press notes) as well as “...classic Hawks train beats and country rockers about Marin Wiccans, London mod dub hippie markets and the [un]certainties of love and broken hearts.” Indeed, the range of topics is equaled by the musical depth displayed on the collection. From the lovely mandolin- and pedal steel guitar-adorned Americana opening gem “Might’ve Been Me” and authentic countrified “On Our Way” to the spoken word neotrance blues of “Mississippi Gas Station Blues” and psychedelialaced “Kensington Market” and poignant “Geronimo” I See Hawks in L.A. creates songs that tap into authentic country, roots, bluegrass and folk stylings with amazing warmth and might. A number of guest performers help further bring the rich tapestry of songs to life. Information: iseehawks.com.

AJ Lee and Blue Summit Unveil “When You Change Your Mind”

By Desert Star Staff Today, award-winning Bay Area-based roots powerhouse AJ Lee and Blue Summit (“AJLBS”) released “When You Change Your Mind,” the new single from their forthcoming LP I’ll Come Back, due out August 20th. The band Bluegrass Today said that “it is hard to argue with their success. Lee is part of the same class of [Youth In Bluegrass] artists that produced Molly Tuttle. AJ was a member of Molly’s family band for many years, performing as The Tuttles with AJ Lee when they were www.desertstarweekly.com

teens. Now heading up her group, Lee is out front on lead vocals and mandolin, supported by Molly’s younger brother, Sullivan Tuttle, Jesse Fichman on guitar, Jan Purat on fiddle, and Chad Bowen on bass,” they added. “Like many young performers, when Lee started her group in 2015, they began to experiment and push against the boundaries of what they had grown up playing, but in the end, the grass calls them home.” Lee said the song is about drinking and thinking about “how you’ll never be deserving of someone who loves you

because you’ll only hurt them in the end. You’ve also got your issues, and it’s too much trouble to explain yourself to someone else.” While AJLBS enjoys stretching their creative muscles, Lee reveals that they always come back to their favorite genre—bluegrass. “When You Change Your Mind” follows the release of “Lemons and Tangerines,” and “Magdalene,” of which Country Queer noted, “This band is good in the bluegrass way…they use their skill not to show off, but to build songs that are sturdy as houses, with plenty of room for guests, August 11, 2021

and ready for any weather. Unlike their first record, which featured experimentation with session musicians and electric instruments, I’ll Come Back is a pure reflection of the group’s live sound, hearkening back to their acoustic roots. Each band member performs at their peak, and the variety of songs on the record caters to their broad fanbase. Certain tracks (“Put Your Head Down” and “Faithful”) fall more in the classic bluegrass realm of songwriting. In contrast, others (“Lemons and Tangerines” and “I’ll Come Back”) fall into that hard-to-define realm

of acoustic Americana that blends mesmerizing lyricism and acoustic mastery. Although falling loosely under the bluegrass label, AJLBS generally plays sans banjo, using their configuration effectively to create unique space and texture in the arrangements not as commonly found in the music of their peers. Drawing from influences such as country, soul, swing, rock, and jam music, the band uses the lens of bluegrass as a vessel through which to express and explore the thread that binds and unifies all great music.

A simple flour-based coating keeps the recipe easy to make and baking in the oven means you can skip the messy fryer or firing up the grill. Cook until crispy then corral your party’s favorite dipping sauces from ranch and blue cheese to barbecue and more. Once your spread is served, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the game. You can sweeten up your tailgate or homegate with a shareable option like Marbled Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownies made with Domino Golden Sugar, which is made from pure cane sugar and dissolves and measures cup for cup just like white granulated sugar without compromising performance or taste. Building your menu with crowdpleasing classics – including one triedand true favorite that offers a fresh, veggieforward taste: chilled salsa – makes your guests cheer for more than just the home team. Healthy game day snacks are important to almost half (48%) of tailgaters and 18% said they’d consider leaving a party if salsa wasn’t served, according to the “Game Day Eats Report” survey from refrigerated salsa brand Fresh Cravings. With its low calorie count packed with high flavor, salsa supports healthconscious goals. Made with ingredients like fresh tomatoes, crisp vegetables, zesty peppers and more, the authentic taste of chilled salsa is a universal favorite among fans. With a belief that plantbased foods should contain wholesome ingredients and bold flavors worth celebrating, Fresh Cravings refrigerated salsas are available in the produce section, next to dressings and dips, in restaurantstyle or chunky mild, medium and hot varieties. Chilled salsa is an affordable and vibranttasting alternative to jarred salsa, making it a key ingredient in this Mexican Pizza Dip from celebrity chef George Duran. It’s a simple crowdpleaser you can make in less than an hour, leaving more time for pregame festivities. For more information and game day recipe ideas, visit freshcravings.com.
