Worried about Retirement?? Make these adjustments now
By Janice Gough Some baby boomers may worry about how long their assets will keep the roof over their head. They may be short on regular assets, short on retirement account assets, short on defined benefit pensions, short on Social Security benefits, and, unfortunately long on paying taxes. Boomers have but one option to maintain their living standards — earn more by working more at their jobs, delaying retirement, or returning to work if they have already retired. This is far easier said than done. Hour constraints at their current

jobs, age discrimination, increasing preference for leisure, and health limitations are four significant factors that limit older workers’ abilities and desire. Since the average inflation runs 3 percent per year, one must target earning a higher percentage than 3% to keep their standard of living going forward. It is crucial to have your working capital working for you; however, you may also be at that period in your life, that taking risks on investing your savings, could wipe that amount out leaving you in a worse position. Thus, you need to use the right tool for your investment portion of your savings. Invest in safe plans which are tax-efficient and may cover the “What If’s” in life, such as Long-Term Care, Accidents, or Critical Illness. These benefits can be included in an Equity Index Annuity or in Equity Indexed Life Insurance. Start by making your own profit and loss statement. Examine every expense and cut wherever you can. Those savings need to be working for you now. By determining the portion that you need for emergency funds, you can place that money in a higher interests account. Yes, you want your plan to be set up to pay off debt. Consider the credit cards offering “0” percent interest for as long a period that you can find, and then set up automatic payments from your checking account every month, so when the period is up, you have paid back every
dollar. You mustn’t miscalculate as even owing one dollar, can re-call the high-interest rate for that entire period. A friend said to me recently, that, with all of her possessions, she could start her own shoe, hat, clothing, and jewelry store. She then purchased more of those things! We have made shopping addiction, and many of us need financial therapy. If she started downsizing, she could make a few hundred dollars a month to add to retirement funds. Access where your health is currently and make a commitment to yourself to do what it takes to stay younger and capable of working. You cannot wait until it is difficult to walk or drive to start a good health regime. You may need that part-time job down the road to help you get by. If you own a home where taxes are high, such as they are in California, consider selling while the market is high and using your IRS 1038 Starker exchange to avoid
paying capital gains tax and moving to a state with more affordable housing and lower taxes. The equity you have in your home may help you to own a new home without a mortgage. And by saving on State Taxes, you may add that savings to your retirement account. Your insurance and property tax may be less, also. Healthcare costs will continue to rise. If you currently have a Medicare Supplement plan, consider switching on the Annual Enrollment Period to a Medicare Advantage Plan (in our area a “0” Premium plan). Advantage plans are HMO plans, and our area offers good networks of doctors. This could cut $300 a month or more from current expenses. Also, avoid going to the Emergency Room if you can and chose an Immediate Care Facility, in-network. E.R. can cost a lot unless they admit you. When you start taking Social Security, avoid mistakes. Recall questions, Part 1
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly, In our recent HOA election, one new member was elected but six weeks later. There is an all-out war between the four remaining directors. All business has stopped due to the inability of the four to agree on anything that needs a vote. Homeowners want the board to appoint the next in line from the last election, two board members will not agree to this. We have cumulative voting and I understand recalling anyone less than the entire board is very difficult, no? We are being told that our bylaws require 25% of the owners to demand a special election. Is this so? K.C., Mission Viejo Dear K.C.: Very sorry to hear of the discord within your board. Recalling the entire board is one possibility, which normally requires approval of a majority of a quorum of the members. Pursuant to Corporations Code 7222(b)(1),
associations with cumulative voting find it much harder to recall a single or a few directors, because under that statute “no” votes are multiplied by the number of authorized seats, so it takes many more “yes” votes to remove a director. However, a less hostile alternative would be simply to ask the board to set a special election to fill the open seat. Another option, undesirable due to its cost, would be to ask the Superior Court to appoint a provisional director to break the tie and get a special election set. As to the minimum members necessary to petition for a special membership meeting, Corporations Code 7510(e) says that 5% or more of the members can petition for such a meeting. If the bylaws state a higher number, that might not hold up in court, since it makes it harder for members to assert their petition rights, and since the statute only requires 5%. Hoping things improve, Kelly
has started a petition to recall our board but she is not a member. Is this allowed? I.N., Santa Fe Springs.

World-famous metal bucket crushing kangaroo dies aged 12 By Desert Star Staff A kickboxing kangaroo who gained millions of followers after footage of him crushing a metal bucket with his paws went viral in 2015 has passed away. Roger, 12, died of natural causes while sleeping under his “favorite witchetty bush” in the Australian animal sanctuary where he grew up. The buff Alpha kangaroo, who weighed 89 kilos and was six feet tall, stood out among fellow marsupials with his impressively muscular and manly physique. He baffled audiences around the world when pictures of him using his massive, human-like paws to crush a metal bucket went viral three years ago. Roger was just a joey when he was pulled out of his mother’s pouch by driver Chris Barns after she was hit by a car and killed. The kangaroo was the
reason why Barns went on to build the Kangaroo Sanctuary Alice Springs, a refuge for kangaroos in Australia’s Northern Territory, and where Roger spent the rest of his life. The Sanctuary announced the kangaroo’s death on social media over the weekend with a picture of the marsupial captioned: “The last photo of Roger we took was just a few days before he passed. He was relaxing before a big feed.” “Thank you, everyone, for your beautiful messages about Roger. He was so well-loved by you all.” Fans have flooded social media with tributes and condolences as they hailed the “world’s most famous kangaroo.” Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia was among those who expressed her condolences as she wrote: “He always brought a smile to my face. Such
a proud, strong boy.” One Instagrammer said her “heart hurt so bad” at the loss of Roger that she was crying. Meanwhile, a UK-based couple took to Facebook to say they were “truly saddened” to learn about the kangaroo’s death, before adding he was a “magnificent chap and much loved here, in the UK, as well as all over the world.” Barns described how, despite being hand-reared, the kangaroo had become aggressive by the age of 2, a typical trait of male kangaroos. “[Kangaroos] want someone to kickbox with and Roger used to practice his kickboxing with me,” Barns told ABC news. He added that the huge roo would chase him around to prove he was ‘number one.’

Children’s Groups Promote Plan to Link Medi-Cal, WIC Food Assistance
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Legislature comes back from summer break today, and children’s advocacy groups want them to take up a bill to link eligibility for the Medi-Cal and WIC food-assistance programs to create a kind of one-stop shop enrollment process. About 87,000 low-income children who receive WIC benefits in the Golden State qualify for Medi-Cal but are
not signed up. Karen Farley, executive director of the California WIC Association, said the eligibility requirements for both programs are the same, so there’s no reason people should spend so many hours filling out extra forms. “It can be like a full-time job trying to apply to all the programs that you might be eligible for - and especially if you are a parent with a couple kids and you don’t have a car, which a lot of low-income
families don’t,” Farley said. Assembly Bill 526 would get the ball rolling on express-lane eligibility in the enrollment process. The federal government would fund most of the system interoperability changes at a 90/10 split. The state has already agreed to cover any extra children who enroll. Data show families who receive WIC assistance have fewer issues with low birthweight babies, preterm
births, anemia and childhood obesity. Kristen GoldenTesta, California health director for The Children’s Partnership, said kids who get health insurance from the start also can avoid a lifetime of chronic disease. “As soon as the child gets into health care, the better,” Golden-Testa said, “because then we can get them the care that they need and identify any problems - should they arise early, that could help them in
the lifelong pursuit of health.” Advocates for the bill say they’re optimistic it will become law because Gov. Gavin Newsom has long called for “smart” government programs that would improve outcomes for young children. Teach LGBTQ, Disability Rights History in Schools
By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Maryland Department of Education says it is looking to add curriculum that explores the history of the LGBTQ rights and disability rights movements. The move comes after a push by lawmakers earlier this month to expand the state’s history studies to include lessons focused on LGBTQ Americans and other groups that have been historically underrepresented in the classroom. State Delegate Eric Luedtke, a Democrat, organized a letter to the school system, which was signed by 34 other delegates and 13 state senators. Luedtke says the Education Department told him on Friday it was committed to making the change. “We’re talking about the struggle for civil rights in the 20th century,” he states. “And we do a very good job in
our classrooms of teaching that struggle in the context of civil rights for black and Latino Americans and for women. But we just happen to have left out these groups, as have many states.” Over the past eight years, California, New Jersey, Colorado and Oregon have expanded their education guidelines to include the history of the LGBTQ rights movement. Many other states are also considering including these lessons into their classrooms. Maryland’s Department of Education says it expects a draft framework for the expanded curriculum to be available in 2020. California was the first state to include gay history lessons in its schools in 2011. Many critics at the time said the state’s new guidelines were a way to indoctrinate students into gay culture. But Luedtke disagrees. “Telling the truth isn’t indoctrination,” he states. “It’s

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio continues to chip away at firearm restrictions, and one bill being considered by lawmakers would allow people 21 and older to carry concealed weapons without needing a permit. House Bill 178 is sponsored by Republicans Ron Hood and Tom Brinkman, along with more than 20 other legislators. Toby Hoover, founder of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence, is convinced that the bill would put communities at even greater risk. “And that is a progun piece of legislation,” she points out. “It’s been introduced to allow people to carry concealed weapons without a background check, without a permit, without any kind of training. statistics on gun deaths. “Whereas we look at homicides and we look at family annihilation, we look at accidental shooting, we look at all sorts of shootings that don’t necessarily make the FBI’s list,” Bryant said. According to the Gun Violence Archive, 155 people in Kentucky have been shot and killed so far this year. Bryant said looking at the numbers of people who lose their lives in gun incidents every year has
revealed some surprising findings when comparing Kentucky to other states. “Kentucky has a very loose set of gun laws, and New York City has a very tight set of gun laws,” he said. “If all things were equal, the rate of gun violence would be pretty much the same for both. But the reality is, Kentucky has over twice as many gun-violence incidents than New York City has.” State lawmakers continue to relax what little gun-control
legislation exists in Kentucky. In March, they passed Senate Bill 150, allowing people to carry concealed firearms without a permit or training. Backed by the National Rifle Association, the law went into effect in June. But Bryant said not all Kentuckians think guns make their communities safer. “Gun-rights advocates always like to say, ‘Well, you’re just a gun grabber, y’know, you just want to ban the Second Amendment,’
or whatever,” he said. “And I explain to them that I’m from Harlan, Kentucky, and I’ve probably been at shotguns longer than they have.” Facing mounting public pressure and protests outside his Louisville home, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has recently announced the Senate could possibly consider a federal ban on assault weapons.
by law in some other way to go ahead and carry a gun.” The Ohio House will likely vote on the bill before year’s end. According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Ohio has the 22ndhighest gun death rate among the states, and on the center’s annual scorecard of state gun safety laws, the organization gives the state a D grade. More than 1,400 Ohio residents lose their lives to gun violence each year. Compared to other states, Ohio has relatively few gun control laws. There are no waiting periods to purchase guns, dealers aren’t required to obtain state licenses and there is no limit on the number of guns that can be purchased at one time. There’s also no ban on assault weapons or large capacity magazines. Hoover says state
lawmakers have worked to erode any gun law that might be considered restrictive. “Over these years, we’ve just watched the gun lobby completely influence the Ohio Statehouse,” she states. “And
so, we had seen our gun laws that we had, which were very few, weaken and weaken.” Gov. Mike DeWine, who has previously been endorsed by the NRA, is now proposing to tighten access to guns
by requiring background checks on firearm purchases, among other reforms he recently announced after a gunman killed nine people and injured more than 20 others in Dayton last weekend.

Epstein’s death: A mystery that may end up rivaling JFK assassination?
By Desert Star Staff While the abrupt death of Jeffrey Epstein has triggered an avalanche of conspiracy theories, many reasonably wonder: What exactly did he know and how could such a high-profile inmate, supposed to be on suicide watch, end up dead? Epstein was found unconscious at around 6:30 am Saturday inside his New
York prison cell and was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He had been on suicide watch after an alleged attempt to take his life on July 23 but was transferred back to his cell about a week later. Thus, the Metropolitan Correctional Center’s management and the lapses of the American prison system, in general, must share the
blame for Epstein’s death, believes Julio Rivera, editorial director for Reactionary Times. He was taken off the suicide watch. This is wholly unacceptable based on the unusual nature, and the charges, and the amount of the alleged victims,” Rivera told the press. This is a systematic failure by the American bureau of prisons.
“In the US, at least in federal custody, where this person was, and you’re on suicide watch – you are constantly video, audio monitored, and also, you have one or more people standing outside your cell,” said political analyst Charles Ortel. The death by the apparent suicide of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein shocked few pundits. Given his previous attempt on his own life and influential connections, how could Epstein have been left alone to kill himself? The 66-year-old millionaire had been held in custody since his arrest last month on charges of child sex trafficking and conspiracy. Puzzlingly, Epstein had supposedly been placed on suicide watch since he was found “injured and in a fetal position” in the cell two weeks ago, after a suspected hanging attempt. “Logistically speaking how does a person hang himself in solitary confinement under suicide watch?” asked conservative commentator Matt Walsh.
What took so long? FBI raids Epstein’s Caribbean island By Desert Star Staff FBI agents have raided the island of Little St. James, the property of the financier Jeffrey Epstein, two days after his death inside a New York jail. A group of tourists on a chartered boat off the coast of the island spotted the law enforcement on Monday and took photos and video of the raid. “We were enjoying lunch when we saw over a dozen people getting off their speedboats and landing on the island,” the anonymous witness told the Daily Mail, which got the footage. “When we looked harder, we could see the FBI logo on the backs of their shirts.” Epstein bought the 71.5acre island in 1998 for $7.95 million and allegedly used it for sex parties involving underage
girls and rich and powerful guests for years. His private plane, nicknamed the “Lolita Express,” would land on the nearby island of St. Thomas, from which everyone would take the boat named after his ex-girlfriend and alleged accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell. The FBI has not officially commented on the raid, but its timing – two days after Epstein was found dead in the Manhattan jail after apparent suicide – has prompted questions. The 66-year-old was arrested and jailed on July 6, on charges of sex trafficking. On Friday, some 2,000 pages of documents from a lawsuit against Maxwell, detailing the sordid accusations of sexual abuse of multiple underage girls, were unsealed to the public. Epstein was found dead
in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan the following day. Medical examiners who performed the autopsy on Epstein have declined to publish the cause of death “pending further information.”
There were reports that he had not been on suicide watch, that he was alone in his cell, and that the surveillance camera outside had malfunctioned. Attorney General William Barr condemned the “serious irregularities” at
6
the MCC and demanded a “thorough investigation.” “Let me assure you that this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein. Any coconspirators should not rest easy,” Barr said, speaking at an event in New Orleans on Monday. “The victims deserve justice, and they will get it.”

Adding to the conspiracy, one of Epstein’s alleged victims claimed to have been trafficked by the financier to a ‘who’s who’ of the world’s rich and powerful, including British Prince Andrew, billionaire investor Glenn Dublin, “another prince,” a “foreign president,” a “well-known prime minister,” and the owner of a French “large hotel chain.” The alleged victim’s testimony was unsealed on Friday, hours before Epstein’s suicide. Even mainstream media talking heads and their followers saw a conspiracy. Within an hour of the news breaking, “Clintons” and “#ClintonBodyCount” – referencing a decades-old conspiracy theory that Bill and Hillary Clinton are responsible for a string of suspicious suicides – were also trending on Twitter behind “Epstein.” For now, the case against Epstein goes with him to the grave. Epstein was the only defendant indicted and would have faced 45 years in prison if found guilty.

Boat Safe Ensure your boat is ready for the water with this checklist By Desert Star Staff No matter how much experience you have on the water, prepping your boat – and your passengers – before leaving the dock can make for a more enjoyable experience. To prepare for a safe and comfortable trip, review this pre-departure checklist to ensure your vessel is in good working order and wellstocked for the adventure: • Documentation – Have all required documentation for planned activities, including boat registration, fishing permits and boater education cards readily accessible. • Float Plan – File a float plan with a responsible party who will remain on land. Provide contact info, explain where you’re going, when you intend to return and what to do in case he or she doesn’t hear from you. • Weather Forecast – Always check the forecast before you head out on the water. To regularly monitor any changes, keep a
handheld radio onboard. • Fuel – Before leaving, check that your fuel level is adequate for the trip and that other fluids, like oil and coolant, are at the proper levels. • Batteries – Check to make sure the boat’s battery, as well as battery-operated items like flashlights and handheld radios, are fully charged and operational. • Lights – Check to make sure you have properly functioning navigation and instrument lights and pack a flashlight, as well. • Life Jackets – Ensure you have at least one U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device per passenger with a minimum of two onboard. If your boat is longer than 16 feet, you’ll also need a throwable device. • Anchor – Keep at least one anchor, attached to an anchor line, and at least two fenders for docking onboard. • Bilge – Before launching your boat, ensure the bilge is dry, clear of
waste and has a properly functioning pump. • Fire Extinguisher – Keep a U.S. Coast Guardapproved fire extinguisher securely mounted in an accessible place. • Distress Signals – Store flares and day signals in a dry, accessible location and ensure all passengers onboard
know how to use them. Also have a noise-making device, such as an air horn, bell or whistle, capable of producing a 4-second blast audible for at least 1/2 mile readily available. • Tools – Keep a basic toolbox onboard with commonly used tools and spare parts like wrenches, screwdrivers, batteries, fuel
filters, hull plugs and light bulbs. • First-Aid Kit – Keep a well-stocked first-aid kit – and extra sunscreen – in an accessible location in case of accidents. Find more tips for safely enjoying time on the water at eLivingtoday. com. eLivingtoday.com

HOROSCOPES ARIES
Are you considering a journey far away, or perhaps something legal or educational, religious or psychological. You seek the truth of all that matters and need it quickly and comprehensively. Life feels larger, greater, bigger than ever before. There’s freedom and honesty to be found, curiosity and open mindedness to remember. Your inner compass is realigning, your faith is growing. The Spirit of Peace guiding you.
TAURUS There are mysteries you’re researching, filled with hidden dreams and values. You want to share them with others, but are careful to not be made fun of, ignored or vilified. You must trust others before revealing yourself. There’s a sense that next year you may move, as changes unfolds financially. But you want to make sure you have all the facts before making a life changing decision. You know life is a drama, filled with actors. Everyone playing their part.
GEMINI Gemini’s other half is Sagittarius. Gemini and Sag are the “brothers/sisters” of the zodiac. When Jupiter moves forward in Sagittarius, as it is doing now, you have the opportunity to expand your world with new spiritual influences. Information that you have been seeking comes forth, causing a re-evaluation of all belief systems. Honesty

and will are required. There is love all around you. You re-think what love is.
CANCER Daily life, routines, order, organization and health are the important spiritual avenues to be tended to. You are often giving to others. People see you as living a life of service. But I want to ask you if you are happy? Does giving offer you joy? You may be living a hidden life with secret fears and ambitions no one knows about. Cancer covers themselves up with a shell of protection. Jupiter asks you, what brings you joy?
LEO Leo is always about selfdiscovery, one’s creativity and the ability to see the self in one’s artform. Now with Jupiter in Sag (another fire sign) a deeper sense of self-discovery comes forth. It’s a journey right to the heart of freedom. It’s important to create a Journal of Self & My Creativity – in it list all talents, gifts, abilities, along with desires yet to be fulfilled. Are there children in your life? Children teach Leos how to be playful. The greatest creative act is having faith in your life. Each day an adventure.
VIRGO What is the situation at home these days? How is your garden, what attention does your home need? Does home offer you a state of security and foundation? How was your childhood and what
good things did you learn then? Who were your parents and what did you learn from the? Are there patterns, sadnesses, burdens you want release from? Deep within is a new reality you have been gestating. Soon it will be birthed. And you will be free.
LIBRA Jupiter and Uranus bring us new revelatory information so that we may begin to question all that we believe and assess those beliefs to see if they bring goodness and Goodwill to our lives. A deep truth about your childhood and upbringing, begins to unfold for you. And honesty and the true nature of things become known. In all communication offer kindness, compassion, and truth. Listen more. Deep listening is a mindful spiritual practice.
SCORPIO Your new journey is one of deep re-discovery of what you truly value. Out and about in the world of others, we can lose our sense of value, even that we are of value and how much. During the next year, your true sense of worth, what makes for security and selfesteem will subtly emerge. You must look for it to see it. And I must ask how are you handling your money and resources and what is most precious to you in your life?
SAGITTARIUS The past seven years have been years of growth in selfawareness and wisdom.
Now a new phase begins for you. At first you may feel divided on a major choice recently made. However, your life is protected, there are no mistakes, and your next step is the synthesizing of all your gifts and abilities. This will occur through your work and by the new people you meet. Know that all that you need are at your feet.
CAPRICORN Do you have a dream journal? It would be good to have one, to jot down dreams, visions, intuitions, hopes, wishes and more dreams in the coming months. Dreams are ways the subconscious synthesizes experiences in daily life. Dreams are sometimes visionary – offering answers to questions. At times family members who have died appear in our dreams to tell us they are doing well. Dreams tell us what we’re capable of and sometimes it says,” Let’s do this again... more wisely this time.” Dreams take us underwater where healing happens.

In ‘Breakthrough’ Miracles Can Happen Truth is stranger than fiction, faith can move mountains and miracles can and do happen. Such is the case in the film “Breakthrough” based on an actual incident in the lives of Joyce Smith, her husband Brian and their adopted son John. In “Breakthrough” Chrissy Metz (TV’s “This Is Us” star) gives a genuinely moving and heartfelt performance as Joyce Smith. She and her husband Brian (Josh Lucas) adopted their son John (Marcel Ruiz) while on a spiritual mission in Central America. As the story begins, John is now a teenager, and his current relationship with his mom is less than perfect. Right now, what matters most to him is basketball and playing with his friends and teammates. Joyce is truly hurt by her son’s aloof behavior. Her husband tries to console her, saying this is normal for a teen--eventually, he will outgrow it. It’s obvious that she is hurt, even though she hides it from her son. However, she has faith that he
will come around someday. For Joyce, faith is the cornerstone of her life, but she doesn’t care for the new pastor, Jason (Topher Grace). In her mind, he is too hip right down to his stylish haircut. She keeps her distance, even when Jason goes out of his way to be friendly. His preaching and behavior are meant to reach out to young people, not alienate the older generation. It works, but not for Joyce. Everything changes in her world when her son falls into an icy lake while playing with his friends. They can get out, but John remains trapped under the ice for 15 minutes until a firefighter (Mike Colter) can rescue him. In the ER, John has no pulse, but Joyce is confident he will survive as she prays desperately over his unresponsive body. She refuses to allow anyone to give up on her son. What is beautiful about the story is the love of the town, the support of the pastor, and the constant care of the
doctors even when all hope is lost. It is also touching because the story is true. “Breakthrough” was directed by Roxann Dawson from a screenplay by Grant Nieporte. “Breakthrough,” from 20th Century Fox,” has a running time of 1 hour, 56 minutes and is rated PG for thematic content including peril.
••••••••••••••
“Breakthrough” is now available on DVD. This is a great way to see and appreciate the film thanks to the additional DVD featurettes that include “A Tapestry of Miracles” about the making of “Breakthrough.” You also get to see the real Smith family and other individuals like Dr. Sutter, who played an important part in young
John’s miraculous story. According to Dr. Sutter, “After 45 minutes without a pulse, I was ready to pronounce John dead.” He also noted that being without respiration could cause brain damage. This was not the case with John. He made a complete recovery, and a month later, he was able to return to school. Miracles can and do happen!
5 Basic Steps for Sizzling Steak
By Desert Star Staff A sizzling steak is a surefire sound of summer, and the flavors achieved from one that’s perfectly grilled are hard to match. Before you fire up your grill, consider these five basics for cooking a chef-worthy steak: Prepare Your Cut: Taste preferences (and prices) may differ among sirloins, ribeyes, T-bones and more, but the way you prepare steaks likely won’t change much from cut to cut. You’ll want to trim the thickness down to 1/2-1 inch for proper cooking, and setting the meat out ahead of time allows it to warm to room temperature before hitting the grill. Placing a refrigerator-cool slab on hot grates works against you in two ways: first, the cold meat instantly chills your previously warm grill, and second, the inner portion of the steak will take longer to grill. Add Some Salt: Feel free to add any spices that you prefer, but remember a good steak typically doesn’t require fancy seasoning - a pinch of salt works just fine. Add your salt anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours before grilling time to help retain moisture and improve flavor. Aim for High Heat: Grilling a steak correctly actually isn’t just about maintaining a sweltering flame. A two-zone www.desertstarweekly.com
fire is usually the way to go one side of the grill should be hot (using direct heat) with the other side not quite as warm (indirect heat). This allows you to create a sear over direct heat before finishing cooking through - without burning - over indirect heat. Sear and Slide: Speaking of searing: Cooking your steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes on each side is normally about right for creating a proper sear. At this point, depending on the thickness of your steak, you’ll want to check for doneness. If it’s not quite to the temperature you’re looking to achieve, simply slide it over to the indirect heat for a finishing touch. Keep in mind these general guidelines for doneness: 120-125 F is rare, 130-135 F is medium-rare, 140-145 F is medium, 150155 F is medium-well and 160-175 F is well done. Let Rest: Finally, as hungry as you may be at this point, resting steaks is an important last step before diving in. Giving your steaks 5-10 minutes (foil or no foil) allows flavors to redistribute and moisture to be retained in the meat. Find more cooking tips and recipes at Culinary. net. Culinary.net

She has won an Academy Award and an Emmy and was the first American woman to be feted with acting awards at film festivals including, Cannes, Berlin and Venice. Due to her father’s military career, Julianne lived in dozens of countries around the world. Eventually, she enrolled in Boston University where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She cut her teeth on episodic television series such as, “The Edge of Night,” “Another World,” “B.L. Directed by her husband Bart Freundlich, Michelle Williams costars as the mysterious Isabel, who runs an orphanage in a poor section of Calcutta. Billy

was only $12 per person, which was a super deal. The night I went, it was the Great White Band and Vince Neil. Several thousand people filled the area to watch Great White, a famous band from the ‘80s and ‘90s. They held a great show and tour around the world. The lead singer Mike August 14, 2019
Malloy is tall with long blonde hair that he tosses around a lot while singing and prancing across the stage. He is a wellknown singer, songwriter, artist, and engineer. The band is also an Emmy award band. The audience knew most of the words to songs they sang as you could hear them sing along with the group. Their most famous song was Once Bitten, Twice Shy. There was a short intermission between bands so fans could feast on the award-winning BBQ ribs and foods and grab refreshments for the next concert. Another few thousand fans showed up for the Vince Neil concert as they remember him as the lead singer for Motley Crue, a very famous rock band. Vince Neil looked a bit different than the Vince of old, but he rocked the stage like the younger Vince. He had the audience in the palm of his hand with his songs and stage presence. The guitarist and bassist took over a
story a new life. They said that we should try to reinvent it with the lead characters as two women instead of men. Because I knew the plot so well, I was confident that it would not be a major stumbling block. I struggle talking about this because I don’t want to give away too much away, so I rely on all of you to figure Continues on Page 14 couple of the songs, and you knew they were the best in what they did. The audience seemed to love it when the band members and drummer did their solo performances. The band’s genre is hair metal, hard rock, heavy metal, and pop/rock, so they cover almost every type of song. The Ribfest is held in the Vetter Stone Amphitheater which is perfect for outdoor concerts. There is the upper part for vendors and standing room. There are platform levels where fans can bring chairs to sit and watch. I liked the vast area near the stage where fans can stand and get up close to the artists. It was filled for both concert artists. Friday nights show was Dwight Yoakam. Thursdays highlight band was 38 Special and Sunday night was Christian music. Other bands played during the day. Mankato holds this kind of concert events frequently. The following weekend was Kid Rock, so people in Mankato and surrounding areas have a fun summer listening to great music. reat classrooms don’t happen by accident. Teachers across the country work hard to build vibrant, energizing learning environments for their students, which often means everything from microscopes to pipe cleaners, graphic novels to oboes, class pets to field trips and much more. As a result, teachers spend more than $1 billion from their own pockets each year on supplies. However, parents and community members can lend a hand. Helping to offset teachers’ expenses can take many forms, from working directly with your child’s teacher to identify needs to participating in school-based fundraisers. Another option is sharing your assistance with a program like DonorsChoose. org, which makes it easy for any individual to address the inequity in schools, one classroom at a time. Over the past 19 years, more than 3.8 million people have donated to classrooms through the program. Last year alone, nearly 145,000 teachers had
projects funded on the site and over 255,000 classroom requests were brought to life. These requests reveal some of the key things teachers across America need for success:
Books, Books and More Books
While books may seem “old school,” teachers know that a single book can change a student’s life. Year after year, teachers request books more than any other resource. Many elementary school teachers ask for leveled reading books to meet their students’ individual needs. Others want to diversify their libraries with books that reflect their students’ identities. “The Hate U Give” and “Wonder” are among the most popular books requested this year, and e-readers have become a popular way to expand libraries beyond what the classroom bookshelf can hold.
Flexible Seating and Classroom Furniture
Many teachers credit flexible seating with transforming
the classroom learning experience. Rather than rigid desks, students choose from comfy chairs, bouncy balls, bean bags or wobble stools, all designed to let students get those wiggles out so they can better focus on their work.
Technology Because of rapidly evolving technology, 65% of children now entering primary school will hold jobs that don’t currently exist. Resources like laptops and tablets help students learn at their own pace and practice 21st century skills like coding. For example, coding robots and 3D printers are becoming some of the most popular items requested in high schools.
Back to the Basics Many teachers simply need basic supplies: paper, pencils and tissues top the list. Last year, teachers requested enough pens and pencils to write the complete works of William Shakespeare more than 2,000 times.
n n n n
Books Technology Basic classroom supplies Flexible seating Life Essentials
Another popular request is “hygiene closets,” which allow teachers to provide students facing poverty with free toiletries to take home such as deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as laundry supplies and clean undergarments.
An Appreciation for the Arts
There are plenty of extracurricular activities at nearly every school that require care and compassion from the community. Drama teams, for example, require supplies to create music, perform plays and more. Donations often allow students to explore their artistic abilities while learning how to create sets, write their own scenes, use instruments and more while simultaneously building their management and teamwork skills.

Community Service Not all learning must take place in a classroom. In fact, teachers across the country often take aim at new ways to engage students, such as integrating practical life into the daily curriculum through an outdoor learning environment like a community vegetable garden. By requesting composters, rain barrels, seeds, gardening tools and more, educators can take their classrooms outside to help make the planet healthier while students learn how to be healthier themselves. It also gives students an opportunity to give back to their community by donating food to local families in need. American Music Takes Front And Center On Releases
This coming weekend marks the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate that legendary event with a listen of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s aptlytitled “Live at Woodstock.” Three other essential albums from American artists are also featured this week. Artist: Creedence Clearwater Revival Title: Live at Woodstock (Craft Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: John Fogerty, Creedence Clearwater Revival Tell me more: One of the biggest names to appear at Woodstock in Bethel, New York in August 1969 was North California-based Creedence Clearwater Revival. The quartet — better known as Creedence or CCR —delivered an inspired set that has finally been released in its entirety. “Live at Woodstock” includes many of the band’s most
beloved tracks, and the Aug. 17, 20190 performance fully stands the test of time with singer-songwriter/guitar great John Fogerty leading the rock outfit through 11 classics. The Delta-friend “Born on the Bayou” opens the set with CCR kicking up the energy for “Green River,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “I Put a Spell on You,” the blistering blues-flavored “Keep on Chooglin’,” and an extended take on the setending “Suzie Q.” Information: CraftRecordings.com. Artist: The HawtThorns Title: Morning Sun (Forty Below Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Civil Wars, the Jayhawks, Kasey Chambers Tell me more: Shimmering songwriting and top-tier vocals take center stage on “Morning Sun,” the brilliant debut from the HawtThorns. Featuring the talented husband and wife duo of singer-acoustic guitarist KP Hawthorn and
singer-guitarist Johnny Hawthorn, the HawtThorns somehow blend the best of the Laurel Canyon California sound, modern Americana and melodic rock without missing a beat across 11 winning tracks. The luxurious melodic gems “Shaking” and “Morning Sun,” tender countrified ballad “The 405,” ambitious dream-pop of “Come Back From The Stars,” and amped up folk-rockers “All I Know” and “Steady Fire” are among the terrific songs on the disc. Information: TheHawtThorns.com. Artist: Blue Highway Title: Somewhere Far Away (Rounder Records) You might like if you enjoy: bluegrass, Infamous Stringdusters Tell me more: Bluegrass music lovers will find plenty to love and discover courtesy of the outstanding new Blue Highway album “Somewhere Far Away.” The group’s gifted lineup features Tim Stafford
(guitar, vocals), Wayne Taylor (bass, vocals), Shawn Lane (mandolin, fiddle, guitar, vocals), Jason Burleson (mandolin, banjo, guitar, vocals) and Gary Hultman (resophonic guitar, vocals). From the beautiful harmoniesadorned “Dear Kentucky” and wonderful instrumental “Orville’s Webb” to the driving “Cochise County” and haunting “A Place I’ve Never Seen,” the original songcraft and stunning virtuoso musicianship makes listening to “Somewhere Far Away” pure joy. Information: BlueHighwayBand.com. LOST CLASSIC Artist: Psychic Rain Title: World Ironic (Greico Records) You might like if you enjoy: Gin Blossoms, Goo Goo Dolls, Toad the Wet Sprocket Tell me more: In the 1990s Orange County, CA had an explosive music scene that
generated countless artists ranging from punk and ska to power pop and Americana. While No Doubt, Sugar Ray and Lit scored platinum album sales, the region’s most talented acts included artrockers Altered State, singersongwriter Michael Ubaldini, countrified power-pop greats Walter Clevenger & the Dairy Kings, genre-defying duo Bright Blue Gorilla and melodic rock quartet Psychic Rain. Led by singer-songwriter/rhythm guitarist Greg Stoddard and master guitarist Brian Stewart, Psychic Rain was championed by local radio station KLOSFM and was briefly signed to Warner Bros. Records. The band’s masterwork is the 1996 LP “World Ironic,” a nine-song effort featuring a group able to rival contemporaries including the Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Like those better-known troupes, Psychic Rain’s sound is built around songs that are literate, feature incredible arrangements and are bolstered by glorious choruses, top-tier lead vocals, and musicianship. There are nothing but should-be hits on this collection including the unforgettable “Without a Sound,” irresistible “Spun Out,” yearning rock ballad “Whisper” and driving “Wrong.” It is difficult to track down this rare title, but it’s well worth it. Mia Khalifa says she only earned $12K from porn
By Desert Star Staff Ex-porn actress Mia Khalifa only made $12,000 in the industry despite the worldwide notoriety that earned her death threats and bans from countries, she has revealed in a tell-all interview – to utter disbelief from social media. Complaining that “people think I’m racking in millions from porn,” Khalifa insisted she left the “industry” five years ago, adding that her troubles finding a “normal job” afterward were “scary.”
In a lengthy interview with her friend Megan Abbott, she details how she got into porn, became (in)famous for doing a scene while wearing a hijab and attempted to move on despite having become so recognizable overnight she claims she couldn’t walk down the street without being recognized. Despite the death threats from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) – who she claims hacked her Instagram account at one point – and the notoriety that sees her
continuing to be “ranked” as a top performer, Khalifa says she does not regret her brief sojourn in the industry, though it took her years to deal with the psychological hangover of being so abruptly shoved into the limelight. Once the high of fame wore off, the shame set in, and never really left, she laments. Her followers didn’t buy the tale of hardship, and
many outright accused her of lying – or pointed out that any subsequent “career” she had was built on her fame as a porn star. Some slammed her as “hypocritical” for dishing on how much porn “ruined” her life while continuing to go by her stage name, pointing out that she was still profiting off her porn career even while “talking badly” about it. Others were more direct,
offering crude propositions in various dollar amounts. “You must be trying to throw the IRS off your trail,” another suggested. Khalifa reportedly continued to receive death threats for the scene that made her famous as recently as last year, though she has moved across the country and become a sportscaster.

Celebrating Native Two-Spirit People Gathering By Desert Star Staff Indigenous people from around the world this weekend at Flathead Lake are reclaiming the roles of what some refer to as “two-spirit” people. The Montana Two-Spirit Society, a Native American organization, formed by LGBT groups, is holding its 24th annual gathering. The term “two-spirit” was coined in the 1990s for tribes that recognize people with both male and female characteristics who are gender non-conforming. Steven Barrios, the founder of the Montana Two Spirit Society, says two-spirit people traditionally had many roles, but their duties were removed when Europeans arrived in North America. “We’re just reclaiming a lot of that responsibility –
like as name givers, spiritual leaders, mediators,” he states. “We had so many different roles in our tribes that twospirit people could do.” The gathering is a drug and alcohol-free event and runs through Sunday. This year’s conference also features the first annual youth gathering, which takes place Monday.

horrible person who hires you. It’s nice to see a woman in a powerful position who is not represented as an evil boss lady.
Barrios says the event for younger folks was put together at their request. He adds it’s important to work because there has been a rise in suicides among two-spirit youth. He explains the youth event will mirror the more massive gathering and prepare the young people to host future events. “We’re going to have them put a gathering committee together, show them how it’s
Two-spirit people are reclaiming some of their traditional roles in native tribes at a gathering in Montana this week. (Montana Two-Spirit Society) done – the logistics, how to go about it – and put them in leadership roles, which I think is great for our youth,” he states. “Once they’re put
in a leadership role, it seems like it instills a lot of pride in them and what they do.” Barrios says Native Americans from tribes
across the country, as well as indigenous people from Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, and Samoan islands, will be in attendance.
Conversation with Julianne Moore & Bart Freundlich – Director “After the Wedding it out. (Laughter) But obviously the challenge was going to be if you’re a woman and have a baby, you’re going to know. One of the male characters in the original screenplay was ignorant about the existence of the baby. The thing that became the ultimate stumbling block became the thing that helped me reinvent the story. How did you approach the new concept? Bart: I researched people who had been given up as babies and were adopted by a different family asking them how they felt about that. It gave me a whole new world to explore and it felt really exciting to have two women at the heart of the movie - both of them very strong characters with totally different life philosophies and both of them convinced that their philosophy of the world is the right one. I loved that contrast and having Julie and Michelle play those roles. Julie: We all had to make a considered decision. Every adult in this film knows about the decision and kept it a secret. That deliberateness really heightened the drama tremendously. It’s like people make the best decision they can at the time and later oftentimes have regrets. Your character is very strong and successful. Did you base her on someone you know? Julie: I’ve seen examples of women who have big lives - who have successful careers and also have families they are dedicated to, and what it takes to achieve that. I’m always impressed by how much they are able to accomplish. Many roles for women are paper-thin where you are that

Did you guide the actors in the development of their characters and did you take input from them? Bart: I thought a lot about the story line and the characters, but the actors did their own work in becoming those people. You try to listen to them because they’re usually right. What did you use in your acting toolbox in that emotional scene between you and your husband? Julie: A lot of water. (Laughter) My character doesn’t reveal that she’s sick to anybody so when you get to that moment, that’s truly a very private moment and the only person who will see her that way is her husband. Despite all her pent-up tension, you’ve never seen her crack, and then you see her implode. Bart: I feel why her character was so important was that she was doing all the things she had to do so set up everyone’s life as a way to keep moving forward. And, after all was said and the secrets were finally out, there was no more to do. And, I loved it because she’s not just sad – she’s furious because she’s someone who’s so capable and yet there’s nothing she can do to change the impending outcome. *Due to space limitations, Abby’s portion of the interview is not included.

Patrolman, Gunman Killed in Gunfight Near Riverside Freeway NBC PS News Staff An investigation was continuing Tuesday into what police called a “long and horrific gun battle” in south Riverside that left a California Highway Patrol officer dead, two others wounded, and the suspect mortally wounded. The shooting occurred about 5:35 p.m. Monday in the area of Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue, just west of Interstate 215. Officer Andre Moye, 34, had pulled over a GMC pickup truck for an unknown violation and was preparing to have the truck towed when the suspect pulled a weapon from the vehicle and opened fire on the officer, according to CHP Assistant Chief Scott Parker. Moye was able to make a distress call while under fire, and at least three other CHP officers responded to the scene, as well as Riverside Police Department officers and Riverside County sheriff’s deputies. The first CHP officers to arrive engaged in a gun battle with the suspect — identified by family members as 49-year-old Aaron Luther of Beaumont.
Luther was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire. The two CHP officers involved in the gunfight were injured — one critically, the other superficially, Parker said. Two bystanders also suffered superficial injuries, Parker said. “It was a long and horrific gun battle,” Diaz said. The suspect’s weapon, described as a rifle, was recovered at the scene, Riverside Police Department Chief Sergio Diaz said at a Monday night news conference. Riverside police are leading a multiple-agency investigation involving the CHP and the sheriff’s department. “We don’t know where the suspect was going, where he was headed to, what his affiliations are,” Diaz said. “We don’t know his motive for this crime, and we won’t speculate on that.” Moye was flown by a Riverside police helicopter crew to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. One of his fellow officers was driven
to the hospital in a police vehicle, the other was taken by ambulance, authorities said. “It is with profound sadness that I regretfully offer our condolences to the family of California Highway Patrol Officer Andre Moye and to the California law enforcement community,” Moreno Valley Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez said. “Officer Moye died in the line of duty. He was fulfilling the mission of the CHP, which is to provide the highest level of safety, service and security. We may never know how many people are safe today because of Officer Moye’s service and that of the other injured officers.” Video from outside the hospital showed officers standing watch and a line of motorcycles outside the emergency room, as well as a hearse that arrived just after 10 p.m. Moye’s body was placed in the hearse about 10:45 p.m. and the procession to the Riverside County coroner’s office in Perris began just after 11 p.m. Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement, saying he and his wife “extend our heartfelt condolences to the family,
friends and fellow officers grieving the tragic loss of Officer Moye, who will be remembered for his commitment to serving the Riverside County community and the people of California.” In response to the shooting, the CHP canceled the agency’s 90th anniversary ceremony, which was scheduled for Wednesday in Sacramento. A bell toll tribute is planned instead, according to the agency. Moye was assigned to the Riverside CHP office after graduating from the CHP Academy in March 2017. He is survived by his wife, father, mother, stepfather, brothers and sisters. The names of the hospitalized officers were not released by authorities. The suspect’s father, Dennis Luther, told reporters his son served 10 years in prison for attempted murder, but he was released more than a decade ago. Dennis Luther said, however, that his son was recently suffering from depression, saying he was having marital troubles and
was unable to work because of pain in his knees. He suggested his son may have been trying to commit suicide by attacking the officer. “I think he just, whatever else was going on with his domestic situations and his pain, I think he just thought he didn’t have much to live for and I think this might have been suicide by the police,” Dennis Luther told KTLA5. “It’s just unfortunate that he happened to hurt anybody but himself.” He told reporters he does not know why his son had a gun in his possession. The father said he was grieving for the police officer “just as much as we’re grieving for our son.” “In fact, I said a prayer for the policeman before I did for my son,” he said. Citing law enforcement sources, the Los Angeles Times reported that Aaron Luther was a member of the Vagos motorcycle gang and had a lengthy criminal record dating to the 1990s. Another NRA Board Member Leaves Amid Leadership Turmoil NBC PS News Staff Another National Rifle Association board member is stepping down amid turmoil in the gun lobby group’s leadership. Julie Golob, a professional sport shooter, announced that she will not be finishing her full three-year term as an NRA board director, making her the fourth member of the group’s board of directors to reportedly resign in the past month. “I am proud to have had the opportunity to represent the members of the National Rifle Association but I can
no longer commit to fulfilling the duties of a director,” Golob wrote in a brief letter posted to her website. Golob, who declined to comment to CNN, did not mention any of the controversies currently facing the organization, which include legal troubles, allegations of financial misconduct and other high-profile staff departures. The pro-gun lobby group also is under pressure in the wake of two mass shootings. Golob said it was “not a decision I made lightly” but felt it was the “best decision
for me and my family.” She said she will “absolutely continue to support the NRA’s programs and sports as a proud benefactor member.” Three NRA members from the more than 70-member board resigned two weeks ago after raising concerns about reports of lavish spending and mismanagement by NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre, the Post reported. Oliver North, the NRA’s well-known president and public face, was pushed out after he called on the board
By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. — Some in the Granite State are saying “shame on Sununu” in response to the governor vetoing three gun-control measures last week. New Hampshire advocates for curbs on gun violence held a press conference on Monday at the Legislative Office Building to express their concern that Gov. Chris Sununu wasn’t taking action after recent shootings in Gilroy, California; El Paso, Texas; and Dayton, Ohio. The three bills would have required background checks and waiting periods for gun purchasers, and would have banned guns from schools in the state.
Tracy Hahn-Burkett, leader of the Kent Street Coalition Working Group on Gun Violence Prevention, said Sununu’s actions seem out of touch with his constituents’ needs. “People are just so tired of being scared across the country, but including in New Hampshire,” HahnBurkett said. “People are starting to consider, ‘Well, it’s time to buy back-toschool supplies for the kids. Should we buy a bulletproof backpack?’ How is it OK that we’re here as a society?” Sununu has said that he doesn’t believe the bills would stop mass shootings, and called them an infringement on the constitutional rights of
New Hampshire residents. Supporters of the bills say they are common sense and are meant to curb gun violence, not to take guns away from law-abiding owners. Hahn-Burkett said Sununu is siding with the gun lobby instead of the 9-in-10 New Hampshire residents who support background checks for gun purchasers. “You can still have a gun culture and yet have commonsense gun restrictions to work towards having a safer public,” she said. As a candidate in 2016, Sununu said he would support legislation for universal background checks.

LaPierre defended the purchases and claimed North was trying to extort him. Racist or protecting vulnerable Americans?
By Desert Star Staff The White House says the new rules restricting the ability of legal immigrants to receive welfare are enforcing existing laws and protecting poor and vulnerable Americans. SD’s Old Globe Theatre Delivers A Delightful Winning Comedy Romp
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Silly is, as silly does, could easily be the subtitle following the name of the current comedy/farce romp “The Underpants,” now on stage at the Old Globe’s Sheryl and Harvey White stage. However, when the playwright in question is the wildly talented and brilliant Renaissance man of comedy who writes, acts, directs and plays the banjo, in addition to being an award-winning producer/musician who is delightfully just flat-out, off-thewall at times, and answers to the name of Steve Martin… well, attention has to be paid and attendance is a must. Martin has been a quirky comedy writing and performing force since his debut in the 1960s on the “Smothers Brothers” TV show. He was the darling of late-night TV shows for years, appearing on the Johnny Carson show and guest starring on others. Martin, then answered the siren call of Hollywood, scoring with such hit movies as his comedy adaptation “Roxanne,” a takeoff on the Edmond Rostand stage swashbuckler “Cyrano de Bergerac,” the hero with the longest of noses, that no man dare mention in his presence without consequence. Martin, the author/star of “Planes, Trains, & Automobiles,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” with Michael Caine among others, had talent to burn then and still does today. This time, however, Martin is just the playwright. The wonderful ensemble cast of seven solid Equity performers under the seamless, inventive, staging in-the-round, of Broadway director Walter Bobbie and frequent Steve Martin collaborator, is a winning combination once again. Bobbie directed Martin’s recent Broadway hit “Bright Star.” Their “Underpants” production is a comic feast for the eyes and ears along with the joys of experienced farceurs doing their physical bits while at the top of their games is fun to watch. The production is based www.desertstarweekly.com
on the 1910 novel by German author Carl Sternheim, who wrote his intriguing and deliciously bawdy story of how German society dealt with the male vs. female relationships of their day was intended to be more of a sober documentary. Once Steve Martin, however, got to apply his zany and off-the-wall playwright gifts to the script, director Bobbie doubled down as well delivering a hilariously funny, comedy romp, where innuendos reign supreme. There’s not a blue word uttered by anyone in the cast. Sex, you see, can indeed be discussed in polite company and still be enjoyed by today’s audiences; even for those who squirm a little bit in their theatre seat when the characters get sexy and the dialogue gets racy. Comedyfarce is a great equalizer between men and women. If done right, both sides win. In Martin’s adaptation of “The Underpants,” set in 1910 Dusseldorf, Germany, a fetching, young, beauty Louise Maske (Regina De Vera) who is newly married has become bored in her sexless marriage with her demanding and uptight bureaucrat husband Theo (Eddie Kaye Thomas). Then
one day at a Royal parade Louise jumps up on a bench to see the King go by, and oops, a clothing malfunction occurs. Her bloomers come loose and fall down around her ankles, right in front of everyone. Theo is aghast and frantic with worry about losing his job and their reputation. Suddenly the room they’ve been trying to rent now has plenty takers eager to occupy it. Such are the benefits of fame. The renting applicants consist of: Frank Versati (Luis Vega) a wealthy smooth-talking narcissistic poet who believes that no woman can resist him; Benjamin Cohen (Michael Bradley Cohen) is a jealous Jewish barber who never takes no as an answer; Gertrude Deuter (Joanna Glushhak) the nosy, upstairs, sex-starved neighbor, who keeps egging on Louise to have an affair channels the character traits and vocal delivery of Frau Blucher from Mel Brooks’ film “Young Frankenstein,” a role she portrayed in the National touring production, is a hoot; Jeff Blumenkrantz, as Klingelhoff, and Kris Zarif as the King, complete this fine comedy romp cast. The play’s ‘underpants
incident/premise’ of 1910 is the 21st-century version of what Pop artist and celebrity writer Andy Warhol called such occurrence as having one’s “fifteen minutes of fame.” Today’s generation calls the result of such an incident as “going viral.” The Old Globe audience finds it just the ticket for promoting and/or encouraging female empowerment and a thumbs up for the #Me Too movement thrown in for good measure. My sense of who in the audience is getting the message that Martin, Bobbie, and the cast are sending is definitely being received and enjoyed by the distaff side by a three to one ratio. The females got every gesture, every laugh line, while the males, at least in my sightline, sat with arms folded where an occasional smile would cross a face. Generally, very few smiles were on the faces of the older men, even while in repose. The shock of recognition apparently must have been too much for them to endure. To that, I say it’s just poor sportsmanship on their part. Men have enjoyed the advantages of Patriarchy for over 10,000 years, and now
they begrudge the ladies a few decades to shine and enjoy the sunlight of equality along with a modicum of notoriety or celebrity? As the millennials say, “Get over it,” the world is moving on. All aboard! The Old Globe performing arts complex is state of the art when it comes to various technical team requirements. In the case of “The Underpants” production led by director Bobbie, it features the technical skills and talents of such Broadway stalwarts as Tony Award-winning Scenic Designer John Lee Beatty; Costumer Designer Alejo Vietti; Lighting Designer Phillip S.Rosenberg, and Tony Award-winning Sound Designer Nevil Steinberg. Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein is a magician when it comes to gathering the best and brightest for his season of plays at The Old Globe Theatre complex. And, No New York, you can’t have him back. By popular demand, he stays in California. “The Underpants” is a funny, entertaining, and crowdpleasing production. It’s been extended twice and now runs through September 8, 2019. It’s a must-see production.
