Southern California’s most beautiful people flocked to coolest pools in Palm Springs By Dan Marinelli Palm Springs – Move over Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival; you are no longer the only show in town. For the second time in 2014, and the third time since last year, thousands of music fans and party lovers flocked to the dance Fest that spanned over three different pools in
Palm Springs: the Hacienda Cantina and Beach Club, the Saguaro and the Hard Rock. All three pools were chicly decorated and primped for the weekend water park for adults. However, the hotels alone did not attract the masses. A trendy hotel pool on its own is fun – especially in 100-plus degree weather – but what
made Splash House even more special the second time around this summer was the beefed-up musical lineup. The day party featured acts like Atrak, Chromeo; Cut Copy, Flume, Gorgon City, Jagwar Ma, Oliver Heldens. Uberjak’d, Viceroy, Wax Motif and actor Elijah Wood’s group Wooden Wisdom. LED Presents, the

(AP) - Authorities detailed Robin Williams’ final moments Tuesday, saying the actor and comedian hanged himself with a belt in his San Francisco Bay Area home. Marin County Sheriff’s Lt. Keith Boyd said Williams was last seen alive by his wife Sunday night when she went to bed. She woke up the next morning and left, thinking he was still asleep. Shortly after that, Williams’ personal assistant came to the Tiburon home and became concerned when Williams
failed to respond to knocks at a door. The assistant found the 63-year-old actor dead in a bedroom and called police. Boyd said all evidence indicates Williams, star of “Good Will Hunting,” ‘’Mrs. Doubtfire,” ‘’Good Morning, Vietnam” and dozens of other films, took his own life. But he said a final ruling will be made once toxicology reports and interviews with witnesses are complete. The condition of the body indicated Williams had been dead for at least several hours, Boyd said. Williams also had superficial cuts on his wrist, and a pocket-
knife was found nearby. Williams had been seeking treatment for depression, Boyd said. He would not say whether the actor left a suicide note. “We still have people we want to speak with so there is some information we’re going to withhold,” Boyd said. “We’re not discussing the note or a note at this point as the investigation is ongoing.” It was no secret that the Oscar-winning actor had suffered for years from periodic bouts of substance abuse and depression - he

group behind Splash House, will have a whole year to prepare for next year’s bash, and with the event’s growing popularity, there will only be more pressure to bring in A-list talent. “It just depends if they continue to bring acts like Flume and Cut Copy that are major artists,” said Laura Markure, a festival goer from Los Angeles.
“I didn’t come last year because they didn’t have the same type of ballot – and today is Chromeo. Those are really big artists to be playing such an intimate venue. So I think it just depends on the music.” On S u n d a y, when headliners Atrak and Chromeo Continues on Page 2
Splash House is Here to Stay performed back-to-back, the dance floor got so packed that before Atrak finished his set, security and event organizers were advising people to move away from the stage. During Chromeo’s set, the equipment overheated, resulting in a 10-minute delay. Once the issue got resolved, “It’s so much better with the music,” was a recurring motto sung by lead singer Dave Macklovitch. Not only did the festival provide world-class talent, but the day-to-day organization of the weekend fling was top notch. Including providing food in case pass holders got hungry, the cash bars offered free water, which is smart and proactive in keeping everyone safe and hydrated. In addition to providing a free and fun shuttle (party bus!) to chauffeur people to the various venues, Splash House organizers also
decided to schedule daily activities that catered to ticket holders staying at the hotels. “I think they’re trying to do the Coachella thing,” music fan and attendee Cody Rabin said. “A year ago, they didn’t have the free yoga uses, this year they had the free yoga session and a brunch, all this extra, inclusive stuff.” The pools were packed with some of Southern California’s most beautiful people who flocked to Palm Springs for this event. LED Presents and the hotels benefited greatly from this festival, but the greatest beneficiary might be the Palm Springs economy. Once the aptly named water-music Fest let out, thousands were ready to spend on the restaurants and bars surrounding Palm Canyon Drive. A resounding theme throughout the entire event was relaxation and letting loose from the mundane workweek.
Thanks to the emerging success of Splash House, it looks like the opportunity to
party at the tri-pool festival will become an annual privilege. Let’s hope the day-rager
returns in 2015 bigger and better than ever.
By KMIR News Staff PALM DESERT, Ca.-Slightly cooler weather is expected in much of Riverside County today, but triple-digit temperatures are again forecast for the Coachella Valley. High pressure over the Four Corners area of the western United States caused temperatures to soar in parts of Riverside County on Thursday. A record high of 96 degrees was reached in Idyllwild, according to the National Weather Service.
A National Weather Service heat advisory is scheduled to remain in effect until 9 p.m. for the Coachella Valley, where high temperatures of 106 to 112 are expected. It also had been scheduled for the mountains of Riverside County and valley areas around Riverside, but it was cancelled for those regions early today. “The combination of a deeper marine layer from a coastal eddy, mid- and high cloud cover and an increase in
low level moisture in the lower deserts will bring 5 to locally 10 degrees of cooling in most areas today,’’ according to the advisory. However, weather service meteorologists said the decrease in temperatures in the deserts would be offset by increased humidity with little change or slightly higher heat index values. Peak heat index values of 108 to 114 are forecast. Weather service forecasters said hot weather can be stressful
for people and pets if precautions are not taken. Kids and pets must not be left unattended in vehicles because temperatures inside can quickly rise to lethal levels. Strenuous outdoor activities should be rescheduled to early morning or evening hours, and those planning to spend time outdoors were advised to drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic beverages. The weather service forecast highs today of 110
degrees Fahrenheit in Blythe and Thermal, 109 in Palm Springs, 107 in Indio, 103 in Desert Hot Springs, 99 in Moreno Valley, 98 in Lake Elsinore, 97 in Hemet, 93 in Corona, 91 in Temecula and 86 in Idyllwild. Adding to the discomfort of high heat, air quality will be unhealthful for sensitive groups in the Coachella Valley, the Banning Pass Area and valley areas around Riverside today but moderate in the rest of the county. lived in the quiet, waterfront neighborhood for eight years, according to neighbors. Noreen Nieder said Williams was a friendly neighbor who always said hello and engaged in small talk. Nieder said she wasn’t close to Williams and his family, but she still felt comfortable enough to approach him and ask him about his latest stint in drug and alcohol rehabilitation. “He was very open about it,” Nieder said. “He told me he was doing well.” Makeshift memorials of flowers and notes popped up around the country including on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, his Tiburon home and outside the house where the ‘80s sitcom “Mork &Mindy” was set in Boulder, Colorado. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom (“Chocolat,” Cider House Rules”), the film is a romantic tale of two cultures and two cuisines that focuses on the magic of fine food beautifully prepared. After seeing this tasty trifle aimed at adult movie palettes I wanted to head to a French restaurant and eat. “Bon appetite!”

The movie is reminiscent of other films about gourmet food preparation like the 1987 Danish Oscar winner “Babette’s Feast” and the Meryl Streep comedy “Julie and Julia” about the famous TV chef and cookbook author, Julia Child. And who can forget the Disney/Pixar animated treasure “Ratatouille” abut a fabulous chef who just happens to be a rat. But the little guy knows how to cook and he always, always washes his little hands. In fact, in this film, as in “Ratatouille,” a romance develops between two chefs who find themselves in direct competition with one another. In this latest foodie fable, not only is the menu divine, so is the scenery as we travel from Mumbai, India to a charming village in France, then on to Paris. The story starts in Mumbai, but after a tragedy, due to political unrest, the Kadam family is forced to leave their homeland. They first come to England for asylum, but find the vegetables there not to their liking. This is not the case when they arrive in France. After their old car breaks down on a steep country road, they are helped by the very beautiful Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) who turns out to be the sous chef at Madame Mallory’s fine local restaurant. Madame Mallory (a very snooty Helen Mirren) is proud of her one star Michelin establishment and dreams of one day earning yet another star. When the Hadam family buys the deserted former restaurant 100 feet from her establishment, a definite food fight begins. Add to the mix, the very handsome eldest son Hassan (Manish Dayal) who has the potential to become a major chef if he and his family are able to establish their Indian restaurant in this petite French town.
As the Hadam family rebuilds the empty, run-down former restaurant across from Mirren’s elegant “Le Saule Pleureur,” she becomes furious, and soon it is war between the proud French restaurateur and the Hadam family, headed by Papa Hadam, veteran Indian actor Om Puri. The cultural clashes, mouth watering food preparations and beautiful scenery combined with young love, and romance make “The One-HundredFoot Journey” one of the most pleasant movies so far this summer. Rated PG for some thematic elements, some violence, language and brief sensuality. Running time, 2 hours.

“Get On Up,” directed by Tate Taylor (“The Help”) is a film biography of James Brown, “The Godfather of Soul.” Mick Jagger, one of the film’s coproducers along with Brian Grazer, appeared at the famous Apollo Theater in New York as did Brown, and he credits the
soul singer for inspiring some of his on stage moves as a Rolling Stone. Director Taylor, born in 1970, was not around when Brown hit his musical stride in the 1960s, but it is obvious that Taylor still digs Brown’s R & B style that eventually morphed into soul. Chadwick Bosman, who was excellent as Jackie Robinson in “42,” stars as Brown and has all the right dance moves. In an interview, Bosman said he worked hard to perfect the funky dance moves and countless on-stage splits. Dance instruction lasted five hours a day until he perfected James Brown’s fancy footwork. With that kind of dedication, the actor could be a great contestant on TVs “Dancing With the Stars.” While Bosman mastered all the dance moves, he did not sing as Jamie Foxx did in his Oscar-winning portrayal as Ray Charles. However, in a way it’s nice to know that the voice we hear in the film is actually James Browns.
“Get On Up” was filmed in Mississippi and features Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis as Brown’s aunt and mother respectively. (Both ladies also co-starred in “The Help.”) Dan Aykroyd plays Brown’s sympathetic agent who helped him achieve not only musical success, but financial success as well. Their working relationship lasted a lifetime and meant a great deal to the singer. Songs in the film include “Poppa’s got a Brand-New Bag,” referring to a whole new lifestyle, “Cold Sweat” and “Sex Machine.” Part of the lyrics to that song says, “Get up offa that thing, I feel like a sex machine” which inspired the film’s title. When Oscar’s time rolls around, the movie may not be nominated, but Chadwick Bosman is most deserving of consideration for his very compelling portrayal of “The Godfather of Soul.” From Imagine/Universal, rated PG-13.
