Sarah Robles

Desert Hot Springs Native Sarah Robles Wins Bronze Medal, first weightlifting medal for US since 2000 By KMIR News Staff Desert Hot Springs native Sarah Robles won the bronze medal in women’s over-75-kilogram weightlifting Sunday in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Robles was credited with lifting a combined total of 286 kilograms, 126 in the snatch and 160 in the clean and jerk to finish ahead of Shaimaa Haridy Egypt for the first medal

by an American woman in weightlifting since 2000. ``My main thought was just really pulling on the bar and getting underneath it and I knew the rest would take care of itself,” Robles said. ``I wasn’t really thinking about medals. I (was) just really thinking about having Sarah’s day and if it got me medals, cool. If it didn’t then at least I had the best day. You can’t complain when

you do your absolute best.” Each lifter is allowed three attempts at the snatch and three attempts at the clean and jerk. Their best lift in each is combined to determine their overall result. Robles was successful in all six of her lifts at Riocentro-Pavilion 2. She opened the competition by lifting 118 kilograms in the snatch, then 122 kilograms

By Angela Monroe, Anchor DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Ca. -Desert Hot Springs police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead Saturday. At 3 a.m., officers were called to the 13500 block of Cielo Azul Way in Desert Hot Springs for a report of gunshots and a person shot. When police arrived, they found the crime scene, but no victim. Police have released very little information about the shooting but after our own investigation, KMIR News was able to find out who the victim was. According to family members, 25-year-old Jimmy Lopez was the man shot on the 13500 block of Cielo Azul

way early Saturday morning. According to family members, Lopez was at his home with his wife and three kids when a friend of Lopez approached him for help. The friend said a group of people were blocking him from going home. They tried to get him out of the car but he was able to get away and ask Lopez for help. Shortly after Lopez went out to see why the group was blocking the road, as many as 20 gunshots were heard. Now, the friend is in police custody and the family just wants some answers. “The only person that can give us answers, he’s detained and he was with my

brother. He’s the only onw that’s still breathing and you know, asked my brother for help and unfortunately the one that ended up not coming back was my brother. So he’s the only one that knows the answers to everything that we want. ‘s He’s the one that knows who, what and why,” said the victim’s sister, Alessa Porras Lopez. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call police at 760-329-2904 extension 382 or x 314. and 126 kilograms. In the clean and jerk, she lifted 151 kilograms, 155 kilograms and 160 kilograms. Robles said she was ``feeling a little bit of pain in my upper back,” after lifting 155 kilograms. ``But I told myself that I didn’t,’’ Robles said. ``I lied to myself a little bit. Make yourself feel better so you can perform well.” Robles said before her

final lift, her coach Tim Swords telling her ``it’s eight seconds against the rest of your life.’’ ``So I was like `I can do eight seconds, I’ve done eight seconds before, so I can do it again,’” Robles said. Robles was assured of a medal when Haridy failed to lift 169 kilograms on her final attempt in the clean and jerk. Continues on Page 6

By Desert Star Staff TORRANCE, Calif., -- Arriving this fall in North America, the 2017 Civic Hatchback is the latest addition to the much-heralded 10th-generation Honda Civic lineup, joining the 2016 North American Car of the Year – the Civic Sedan, and the Civic Coupe that launched earlier this year. The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback combines striking, Euro-inspired styling and fivedoor versatility with the Civic’s world-class driving dynamics and Honda direct-injected turbo engine technology. The Civic Hatchback, scheduled to arrive this fall at Honda dealers nationwide, also will serve as the basis for the radical new Civic Type-R launching in the U.S. in 2017. “The Civic Hatch has been a staple for Honda in Europe, but has long been the forbidden fruit for Honda fans in the U.S.,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Now, we’re bringing this sporty, stylish and versatile Civic Hatchback to North America, as we amp up the performance of our incredible Civic lineup with each new Civic model.” Built on the same worldclass platform as the 10thgeneration Civic Sedan and Coupe, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback offers an appealing

combination of sporty styling, efficiency, interior utility and premium features. The Civic Hatchback will be available in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Sport Touring trims, and will feature a single engine for the U.S. market: a 1.5-liter DOHC direct-injected turbocharged inline 4-cylinder with peak output of 174 horsepower and 162 lb.ft. of torque in LX, EX and EX-L trims and 180 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque in the Sport and an all-new Sport Touring grade, which feature a highflow center-mounted exhaust. The turbocharged engine will be offered with either a sporty CVT (all trims) or a performance-inspired 6-speed manual transmission (LX, Sport, and EX trims). Anticipated EPA fuel economy ratings of 31/40/34 mpg (city/ highway/combined) for CVTequipped models, based on the newer, more stringent model year 2017 EPA ratings requirements, put the 5-door Honda Civic Hatchback at the top of its class. Working in concert with the Honda turbocharged powertrain is the Civic’s more rigid and lightweight body and sophisticated chassis design, featuring a fully independent suspension system with liquid filled bushings, front and rear; sport-tuned electronic power steering with variable gear ratios; and powerful 4-channel anti-lock disc brakes with

Medicare Enrollment Periods Clarified

By Janice Gough There are many enrollment periods for the various parts of Medicare. These windows of opportunity provide beneficiaries the chance to sign up for Medicare coverage. It is critical to understand these enrollment periods. They are confusing and could easily lead to missing out on valuable Medicare coverage, resulting in long waiting periods and coverage gaps, resulting in expensive out-of-pocket costs, some of which go on forever in the form of lifelong penalties. It’s essential to be familiar with the many types of

Medicare enrollment periods. INITIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD-IEP The Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a beneficiary’s first opportunity to enroll in Medicare coverage, Parts A & B. For most people; the IEP begins three months before the 65th birth month and concludes at the end of the third month after the 65th birthday month. As always, there is an exception. If the 65th birthday is on the first day of the month, the IEP starts and ends one month early. If a person is already receiving Social Security retirement benefits, they will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B. Those with Social Security disability are auto-enrolled after 24 months. In either of these cases, automatically enrolled beneficiaries must keep Part A, but have choices to make about Part B. If they have Medicare-equivalent health coverage, they may be entitled to a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). If so, they can decline Part B and re-enroll in Medicare Part B at some point in the future. If Medicare-eligible

individuals are not automatically enrolled, they need to sign up for Medicare themselves during their IEP. If they do not enroll on time and are not eligible for a future SEP, they will pay lifelong penalties and have coverage gaps. Many people are in the workforce beyond the age of 65 are delaying starting Social Security retirement benefits, leading to serious confusion on whether or not they should have signed up for Medicare during their IEP or are eligible for a SEP. SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIODS-SEP Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) are the windows of opportunity to enroll in Medicare or elect different Medicare plans outside of the IEP or another Medicare enrollment period. There are multiple categories of SEPS. Leaving an Employer group health plan is scary for many people, due to the situation that the employee cannot return to that plan. Eligibility for an SEP depends on whether their group health plan is considered to have credible coverage, which is coverage equal to Medicare’s. If so, the

SEP lasts for eight months after the employment coverage end. There is no late enrollment penalty for signing up during a SEP. If you have coverage through your employer or your spouse’s employer be aware that the employer’s plan needs to be with a group of 20 or more insurance eligible members. If the group is less than 20, Medicare Parts A & B must be primary and cover 80% of costs. In the case that it is below 80%, it is normally advisable to leave the plan and sign up for Medicare Part D and a supplemental plan. This solution may provide better coverage and lower out of pocket costs to the consumer. The employer coverage for Medicare Part D must be creditable. The Employer or insurance plan can provide the Medicare “creditable coverage notice.” You, also, receive this letter every year when your employer coverage renews. If a plan has not been Medicare creditable, lifelong penalties of 12% per year are levied when the individual enrolls in Medicare Part D. Once the person leaves a health plan, and is entitled to Medicare, it

is important to remember a few key factors. Sign up for Medicare as soon as possible. Medicare enrollment can begin three months before employer coverage ends. While there is an eight monthwindow to sign up for Medicare Parts A & B, there is no primary health coverage until Medicare enrollment is complete. Even COBRA coverage is secondary coverage to Medicare, which means Medicare Parts A and B must cover 80% of costs. The result is that when Medicareeligible individuals do not have Medicare Parts A or B they are left to pay 80% of their costs out-of-pocket. If someone misses the eight-month SEP window after leaving employment, they will have to wait for an extended period of time to enroll, have coverage gaps and pay lifelong penalties. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Hello Kelly: A company that the general membership voted to select is performing work at our complex. In researching the selected company’s contractor’s license, it was discovered that the license has been suspended and the owner had previously filed bankruptcy. Our property manager recommended we disqualify the contractor, and asked that we homeowners vote on whether to keep or change contractors. I and my neighbor voted to immediately disqualify the contractor, but the other owners want to keep them. Do we have any recourse? We do not want to use this company that clearly has issues. Appreciate your feedback! K.B., Redondo Beach Dear K.B.: This situation illustrates exactly why associations have boards of directors - to make most association decisions. Every homeowner will not read management packets and attend all board meetings, so the members should allow the board to do its job. One of the most fundamental board functions is to select and hire vendors to maintain or repair the common area. The board cannot and should not abdicate its responsibility and let the membership decide such questions. On very major projects, it is a very good idea

to have “town hall” meetings, for the members to learn of the need for a major project, or to meet the vendor selected to perform the work. However, the meeting is to communicate with the membership, not to have the membership decide anything. The final decider on vendor selection (or termination) is the board of directors, acting within the Business Judgment Rule. Certain decisions will be listed in the bylaws as outside of the board’s power and requiring a member vote. If a contractor is performing work which requires a license, and their license is suspended or revoked during the time the work is performed, the customer is not required to pay the contractor for the work performed while unlicensed. To check a contractor license, visit www. cslb.ca.gov. When checking a license, also make sure that the license is in the name of the company or person named on the contract. Sometimes

a contractor will “borrow” and list another’s license – which is illegal and does not make the contractor “licensed”. Contractors also should have workers compensation and liability insurance in force at all times during the work being performed for the association, and it should be required by the contract. If the contractor’s licensing or insurance lapses during the course of the work, the contractor should immediately be stopped from working and not allowed to return to work until proof of licensing and insurance is provided. The board usually needs some expert help in deciding whether to terminate a contract, and the manager is a key board resource. The fact that the manager is recommending termination is important, because the professional manager is usually the board’s first Business Judgment Rule resource. Before making this decision

on a significant or complicated contract, legal counsel and a construction consultant may also be important resources. The association’s attorney will weigh legal risks, and determine what the contract says regarding termination. The construction consultant will help advise the association as to the quality of the work compared to normal standards, and provide construction expertise which the manager and lawyer lack. Thanks for your question (and hoping the board steps up), Kelly

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif, - Medical marijuana has been legal in California since 1996, but today, the Drug Enforcement Administration published its decision in the Federal Register to keep classifying it as an illegal drug under federal law. The move means cannabis will remain a Schedule One drug, the highest designation, the same as heroin. Dale Gieringer director of California NORML (National Organization for Reforming Marijuana Laws), thinks the DEA, as a law enforcement agency, shouldn’t be responsible for decisions on how to classify drugs.

“The DEA wants to continue its unjustified war on marijuana,” he said. “They have a vested interest in doing so, and like any bureaucracy, they are trying to protect their own power.” The feds say there aren’t enough well-executed studies to prove marijuana use is safe, and the DEA did move to facilitate more research, by allowing more schools to grow the plants for study, which is good news for the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at the University of California San Diego. They explore the spaces between art, technology, interconnectivity, and the self, creating journeys with a genuine emotional impact to inspire individual growth and creativity. This Fall they are bringing two unique experiences to Los Angeles: The first, entitled Bardo Thodol, is a deeply personal, transportive horror experience taking the audience member through their own death and soul’s judgment in the afterlife. The audience member will find themselves in the state between death and reincarnation where they will be challenged to look back on their life and within themselves to recognize the nature of their mind and attain liberation for the cycle of rebirth. The journey will only be for one audience member

at a time, will be intensely personalized for each attendee (audience members will be sent a detailed questionnaire before the experience), and will take place at 704 S. Spring St. in Downtown Los Angeles. Performance dates are September 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 24th, and 30th and spots are extremely limited. The second, entitled The Rope is a highly interactive and immersive horror experience taking the participant through a dark fantastical world in which each step, each response, and each decision made influences the world around them. They will be taken to a strange land, through the darkest moments of waking life, and subject to a variety of obstacles and interactions to challenge their sanity. The audience member will inhabit the role of an unnamed champion, given

the choice to either inherit the order of this dark place, or destroy it and thus will truly shape the outcome of the story and the world around them. There are multiple paths, secret passageways and various ending depending on how the audience member behaves and each person will take something unique away from their journey. Journeys through this dark world will take place throughout the month of October somewhere in Los Angeles. However, portals to this world will only be opened to those willing to take a step of faith into the unknown. Thus, specific dates, times, and location will only be given to those who make a reservation. Tickets for both shows are available at http:// screenshotproductionstickets.com/.

Could Third Party Candidate Take White House?

By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. – Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump are dominating the presidential campaign, but in many states, other names also will be on the November ballot. Former GOP congressional aide Evan McMullin announced his candidacy last week. He joins third party and independent candidates Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party and Jill Stein with the Green Party as long-shot candidates. Political science professor John Clark at Western Michigan University explains the nation’s long two party system tradition makes it nearly impossible for anyone other than major party candidates to win the presidency. “Unless you count maybe Ross Perot’s run in 1992, there hasn’t been a minor party candidate or an independent candidate that’s had close to

20 percent of the national vote,” he points out. “And it’s been a long time since one has won any Electoral College votes.” The electoral system is based on plurality rule, with the win going to the candidate who gets the most votes. Clark says the result is a two party system that would take a constitutional amendment to change. But Clark notes third party and independent candidates do serve a purpose by shaping election outcomes in the short term, or major political parties in the long run. This year, Clark expects minor parties to play the role of spoiler, and cites the best example as Ralph Nader’s Green Party campaign in 2000. While Nader didn’t receive a lot of votes, Clark says it was a close election, where even 200 votes in a state such as Florida could have changed the outcome to swing in Al Gore’s favor instead of

They might not make it to the White House, but experts say third party and independent presidential candidates can shape election outcomes in the short term. (Diago Cambiaso/Flickr) President George W. Bush. “This may or may not be that kind of super close election, but there’s every reason to think that it’s not going to be a huge landslide,”

he points out. “And if that’s the case, then siphoning off votes from one of the major party candidates could mean that one of these minor party candidates is a spoiler.”

A poll last week showed in a four-candidate race, Clinton was ahead of Trump, 44 to 38 percent, Johnson had 10 percent of the vote and Stein got 4 percent.

Several health-care bills that promise greater protections for consumers face key decisions in Sacramento this week. (liljoel/iStockphoto)

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Several bills aimed at protecting health-care consumers face do-ordie votes this week in Sacramento. Today, the State Assembly Appropriations Committee hears Senate Bill 1010, which would force drug companies to justify significant prescriptiondrug price hikes and give notice of the increases. Anthony Wright, executive director with the advocacy group Health Access, said a little “sunlight” might shed light on the soaring prices. “We typically require similar notice and disclosure of other parts of the health industry, but prescription

drug prices are often a black box,” he said. “This would provide just some very basic, commonsense transparency.” On Monday, the State Senate Appropriations Committee heard Assembly Bill 72, which would prevent insurers from sending patients a big bill if they use an innetwork hospital, but end up unwittingly seeing an out-of-network physician. The real decision for both bills comes tomorrow, when the committees decide which bills get out of the so-called “suspense file” and get a vote in the full chamber. AB 72 is a compromise bill to replace last year’s similar legislation (AB 533), which failed by three votes.

This version includes higher reimbursement rates for doctors. Wright said patients who play by the rules should not be penalized with huge out-of-network bills. “Patients need to be protected that if they go to a network facility, that all the cost-sharing related to that visit is also in-network, typically a small co-pay, rather than uncovered or at significant expense,” he added. Several other bills on mid-year cost-sharing increases, notice on large premium hikes, and the right to a timely appointment are also headed for final votes in the next few weeks.

By Desert Star Staff LEESPORT, Pa. — Monday will mark one week since 22 mothers began a hunger strike to demand that they and their children be released from an immigration detention center in the borough of Leesport. Federal courts have ruled that children, with or without parents, cannot be held in immigration detention for more than 20 days. And the Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, recently claimed the DHS detains families for 20 days on average. But according to attorney Carol Anne Donohoe, the women on hunger strike at the Berks County Residential Center - and their children have been held much longer. “Anywhere from 270 days to a year, including two-

throughout the night.” The majority of asylum seekers who cross U.S. borders are released to family members as they fight their cases in court. According to Donohoe, the majority of the hungerstriking moms have court orders that protect them from deportation while their cases are being resolved. But instead of releasing them, ICE has kept them and their children in detention without explanation. “These families have other places they can go,” Donohoe said. “There’s no need to detain them, and they simply ask to be released and to be able to fight their cases outside.” She said the Berks Center Immigrants’ advocates demand the release of families detained at was licensed as a facility Berks County Detention Center. DHS said Berks is not a secure facility, but Donohoe said the detainees are treated like prisoners. She said they sleep six to a room, must check in at intervals throughout the day and are not allowed a undisturbed night’s sleep. “Every 15 minutes at night, the guards come into the rooms and shine flashlights into the eyes of the kids and the mothers,” Donohoe said. “So they are woken up continuously

American Grandmaster Wins U.S. Tournament Stop

By Desert Star Staff ST. LOUIS, -- The third time is the charm for Grandmaster Wesley So, as the 23-year-old American chess player claimed victory in the final round of the

Sinquefield Cup tournament Aug. 14 at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis (CCSCSL). The tournament is the third of four stops, and the sole U.S. stop, on the 2016

Grand Chess Tour - a circuit of international chess events featuring the world’s elite chess talent. With this tournament win, GM So now leads the Grand Chess Tour overall.

GM So was awarded the 2016 Sinquefield Cup title and the $75,000 grand prize at the Sinquefield Cup Closing Ceremony, held at the World Chess Hall of Fame in Saint Louis Aug. 15. “I am so thankful to be able to play here in Saint Louis with the world’s strongest competition,” said GM So. “All of my competition is so great that I think if we were to start the tournament over today, there would be a different winner.” Coming up behind GM So in the Sinquefield Cup was GM Levon Aronian from Armenia, taking home the second-place $36,250 prize, and GM Veselin Topalov from Bulgaria, taking home the third-place $36,250 prize. The two other Americans in the tournament – GM Fabiano Caruana and GM Hikaru Nakamura – finished in fourth and sixth place, respectively. The Sinquefield Cup is

with a combined total of 306 kilograms, 131 in the snatch and 175 in the clean and jerk. Robles was seventh in the event in the 2012 Olympics. She said the four- year period between Olympics ``has been the most challenging mentally for me, just trying to overcome my own self-doubts and trying to erase the negativity of a lot of people around me.’’ ``I finally realized that the results, the medals, that’s really not what we’re here for,’’ said Robles, who turned 28 on Aug. 1. ``We’re here for the process and we’re here for the learning experiences and we’re here to represent our country and that day I was crying my eyes out thinking about my own experiences. I had an overwhelming sense of American pride and Olympism.” Robles received a twoyear suspension in 2014 from the U.S. Anti-Doping

Agency, retroactive to Aug. 8, 2013, the date she was provisionally suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation, the sport’s international governing body. Robles tested positive for the presence of an exogenous androgenic anabolic steroid and/or its metabolites as the result of one out-of-competition and two in-competition urine samples collected by both U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and the International Weightlifting Federation. Robles qualified for a spot on the U.S. team based on her ability to medal, calculated from performances at four events. Robles led the pack with more than 96 percent heading into the Olympic trials in May. Robles competes despite Madelung’s deformity, a congenital deformity of the forearm, which causes her pain when she lifts or does everyday motions.

Robles’ road to the Olympics began at San Jacinto High School when her coach Rich McClure had her use the Olympic lifts to improve her performance in the shot put and discus throw. Robles competed in some local weightlifting meets in 2004 and 2005 ``and I fell in love with it,’’ she said. Robles received athletic

USA’s Sarah Robles Haridy was fourth, lifting 278 kilograms, 117 in the snatch and 161 in the clean and jerk. Robles was one kilogram short of the American records held by Cheryl Haworth in the snatch, clean and jerk and total weight. Haworth, who won the bronze medal in the over-75-kilogram division, and Tara Nott, the gold medalist in the 48-kilogram division, were the last American women weightlifters to win Olympic medals before Robles. ``This was a magnificent performance,” said Phil Andrews, CEO of USA Weightlifting, the sport’s national governing body. Meng Suping of China won the gold medal with a combined total of 307 kilograms, 130 in the snatch and 177 in the clean and jerk. Kim Kuk Hyang of North Korea won the silver medal

In addition to the Sinquefield Cup, the U.S. Championship, U.S. Women’s Championship and U.S. Junior Closed Championship – the “Triple Crown” of chess championships – make up the most prestigious chess tournaments held in the United States each year. “We are so excited for GM So in winning his first major international tournament,” said Tony Rich, CCSCSL Executive Director. “The Sinquefield Cup is a unique event that brings all the best talent to Saint Louis to compete at the highest level. The competition is always great and is noticeable in the four different winners over the four years since its conception.” For more information, visit www.grandchesstour.org.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

You may struggle mentally to maintain equilibrium between desires and what is actually possible. It’s good to study the subject of sacrifice - the 1st Law of the Soul. At the center of sacrifice is Love. paradox. Love and sacrifice both come from the heart. We’re on Earth because we sacrificed to be here. You may feel that you’ve become a fiery warrior. Spiritual warriors always win.

TAURUS You assess all relationships in terms of value. You must also assess what you value and the values you offer others. Often you sense there is more you can give. Always you begin with intentions for Goodwill which creates Right Relations. You offer the goodness of yourself in relationships. You know love isn’t a feeling.

GEMINI Tend to all things great, small and necessary in daily life. Observe all habits, agendas, and how you serve your world. We evolve step-by-step, beginning with tending to our physical, then emotional, then mental bodies. Then we progress to the Soul. Each day “brood, as a Soul, upon the service for the coming day. Emotions are then calmed. The full moon shines on you.

AUGUST 17 – 24, 2016 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

CANCER

You reassess goals and aspirations the next two months. Earth (soil, trees, plants) is very important for your well-being. Make sure you’re out and about in the Sun and nature - the most balanced kingdom. Its radiations strengthen your heart and mind, refocus your enthusiasm (“filled with God”), allowing calm practicality to emerge. Where is your garden and are the devas your companions?

LEO Ponder upon how you want to be seen, known and recognized in the world. Consider your identity as one who is helping to build the new culture and civilization. Leos are to nurture the new era at its foundational stages because Leos are leaders. Begin to share with everyone your thoughts, ideas, resources and discoveries. Cultivate all creative gifts. Leo’s talents must move from self to the community called humanity.

VIRGO You’re coming into a new selfidentity. It is filled with thoughts of goodness. It’s important to tend to the home. Its value is now and in the future. A certain set of teachings holds possibilities for greater Love & Wisdom. This study allows you to enter into the life stream of humanity through

understanding of the mysteries. Uranus asks if you’re studying astrology seriously yet?

LIBRA It’s a spiritual practice, especially in Leo to realize one is valuable. Is this consideration difficult? If so make lists of all your gifts, abilities, talents, kindnesses, good deeds, thoughts, ideas and plans and givings. There you find value. Place the lists on your walls, reading them each day. This knowledge balances you. It’s the beginning of your self-identity as a Goodwill server for humanity.

SCORPIO Things, stars, people sometimes go into hiding especially you. Or you find someone else hiding away and make their acquaintance. There’s actually someone in your life very valuable to you. They’re knowledgeable and have the skills needed for your next creative stages. They are concerned with humanity’s future. Call forth all your resources, using them to help others. Then you begin to come out of hiding.

SAGITTARIUS Life becomes subtler, slightly different, feelings of compassion awaken. Tend to debts and then give (tithe) to charity. Example of giving to those in need: St. Jude’s

Hospital; Doctors Without Borders; UNESCO; Red Cross, Heifer Project. These are difficult financial times. The spiritual law is what we give is returned ten-fold. When we give to others our life is cared for. You need care.

CAPRICORN Things seem transformative at times, restricted other times. Then joy comes from the garden through the door. Along with these “moods” a new identity is occurring. This identity is new yourself. The river of life is gliding you downstream into new territories. Each day you help bring forth the new culture and civilization. What interests you about this? What do you think is your part?

AQUARIUS You see the need for nourishment of self and others. One source of nourishment is financial security in terms of home and land. Visualize a home on vast amounts of land. Include a workspace for the arts, cottages, gardens, trees, ponds, communal kitchen. See friends and loved ones close by, Work daily on this through visualization. Draw and paint it. Talk about it. These are the first anchorings of your dream.

PISCES A return to a previous, perhaps put-aside creative work allows

you to reaffirm its importance in your life. There’s a renewed fire in the mind, calling you to two things. Laughter with a sense of play, much missed in your life since childhood. And a new level of creative work reflecting who you are now and are becoming. All parts of you yearn toward a close spiritual community. It will appear in its right timing. In paradise. Mobile App Could Help Prevent Sexual Assault in NH

By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. — In New Hampshire and around the country, one-in-five women will be sexually assaulted during her college career, according to local prevention advocates. A new mobile app will be available this fall to help women on all college campuses across the state. Students spend a lot of their time on mobile devices, said Sharyn Potter, executive director of research at the Prevention Innovations Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. That’s how they came up with the idea to provide an app -

called “uSafeNH” - to guide victims of domestic violence and assault to local resources. “The way that this app came about was, a former State Trooper said to us, ‘There are such incredible resources for sexual assault survivors in the state, but it’s really hard to get them into the hands of a distressed 19or 20-year-old,’” Potter said. The University teamed up with the Attorney General’s Office and the New Hampshire Coalition against Domestic and Sexual Violence. The project was funded by a $25,000 grant from the Entrepreneurial Fund of the New Hampshire

Charitable Foundation. Britta Ekdahl, a graduate student in Social Work and project manager for “uSafeNH,” said the research team got feedback from students and social workers about the kinds of apps students would likely use and the kinds of information they thought would be valuable to victims and their allies. “Pretty much all students are aware that it’s a problem;” Ekdahl said. “A lot of them weren’t aware, really, of where they could go or how they would respond, if it was a friend or anything like that. So, they had really supportive and positive

feedback about bringing this resource to their campus.” According to Potter, the app will address key issues for students, including what constitutes consent to a sexual act. “Ninety-five percent of victims of sexual assault do

not disclose,” Potter said. “When these victims don’t have help, it makes it harder to heal and to process, and to move forward.” The app is expected to be ready this fall for students at all 26 local colleges and universities.

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

‘Florence Foster Jenkins’--A Cinematic High Note

Truth, they say, is stranger than fiction, and this is certainly the case when it comes to Florence Foster Jenkins (1868-1944). As a child, she was a gifted pianist who performed at the White House for President Rutherford B. Hayes. Later in life, she turned her musical attention to singing in her own very unique way—off key and off pitch. Now, in Paramount Picture’s film bio “Florence Foster Jenkins,” you can find out more about this very unusual opera singer, described by an unmerciful critic as “the worst singer in the world.” Obviously, he didn’t have a sense of fun, or he would have appreciated her uncommon singing style the way her friends and fans did. Fortunately, until the very end, she was shielded from unfavorable criticism by ‘husband’ St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant) who never invited a credentialed music critic to any of her musical appearances. Things changed; however, when she finally decides to sing at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 25, 1944. Many celebs, like Cole Porter and Kitty Carlisle, came to hear her belt out Mozart and Verdi. Florence also issued free tickets to servicemen in appreciation for their military service in WWII. Unfortunately, newspaper critics also showed up to review her concert

since St. Clair couldn’t deny them access this time. Meryl Streep is delightful as the tone-deaf diva with a heart of gold. She makes us laugh as she screeches out famous operatic arias in the same bizarre way Jenkins did. She also brings us close to tears when unhappy elements of the singer’s life are revealed in Nicholas Martin’s insightful screenplay. Simon Helberg (TVs “Big-Bang Theory”) Bang Theory”) also gives a pitchperfect performance as her devoted accompanist Cosme McMoon, who, like Florence, has dreams of appearing on stage at Carnegie Hall. One of the many comedy highlights in the film is Cosme’s audition for the job. The look on his face when she starts to sing is priceless. He can’t laugh, but we can, as he tries to adjust his playing to her vocal range. He is even more astonished when he actually lands the job. Hugh Grant, charming as ever, plays her devoted common-law husband St. Clair Bayfield to perfection. And while he never sings in the film, he does have a scene where he dances up a storm. Before St. Clair, a charming British Shakespearean actor, met Florence in 1909, she was briefly married to Dr. Jenkins. While we at no time see the doctor in the film, aspects of their unfortunate

relationship are revealed. Although Bayfield and Florence Foster Jenkins never officially married, for reasons not clarified in the film, they remained together until the day she died in 1944. Stephen Frears directed this delightful film, which may be an Oscar contender in 2017. From Paramount, rated PG 13. After seeing the movie, I looked up Florence on the Internet and learned even more about this quirky opera singer. One amusing anecdote not seen in the movie had to do with a careless motorist who ran into the side of her cab. Upon impact, Jenkins let out a high-pitched scream resembling F above high C. Amazed by the sound of her new vocal reach,

she didn’t press charges against the motorist and gave her cabbie a box of very expensive Cuban cigars. Another interesting note: Before writing this review, I asked “Alexa” (the voice of the web-enabled Amazon Echo device that answers questions when asked) if “she” could play a Florence Foster Jenkins song for me. To my amazement, Alexa provided me with a Jenkins aria she recorded long ago. Florence was off key and off pitch, but it was obvious that she was singing her heart out. Listening to her voice, I was reminded of a touching line from the film, “People may say I can’t sing, but no one can say I didn’t sing.”

By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – MidAugust means late nights and lazy mornings – and endless

hours playing Pokémon. But all that must soon make way for early mornings, classrooms and homework.

Stephanie Marcy, a psychologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, says back-to-school doesn’t

have to sound like the end of the world if parents follow a few basic steps. Establishing a new sleep cycle can take up to a week, she points out, so start setting bedtimes and alarm clocks well before that first day of school. “So, parents really need to pay attention to the fact that they have to get their kids an appropriate amount of sleep,” she says. “And in order to do that, they need to go to bed early enough so that when they wake up for school, they’ve gotten at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep.” Not getting enough sleep increases the risk for depression and a compromised immune system, she says. And because video screens, like sunlight, keep you awake, Marcy recommends turning off all devices an hour before bedtime and picking up an old-fashioned book instead. Other tips include staking out your child’s route to school to make sure he or she is using sidewalks, crosswalks and stoplights.

New on DVD: On August 9 Film Chest Media Group released a 5 DVD Musical Collector’s Set entitled “The Golden Age of Musicals.” The 17 films featured on this fivedisc set highlight musicals from the 1930s to the early 1950s and will provide viewers with 25 plus hours of song, dance and comedy. Titles include “Second Chance” starring Fred Astaire, Danny Kaye in “The Inspector General,” Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in “Road to Bali,” Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in “At War With the Army,” Judy Garland in “Till the Clouds Roll By” and James Cagney in “Something to Sing About.” Suggested retail price is $19.98.

Back-to-School Tips for Wyo. Parents, Children

www.desertstarweekly.com

August 17, 2016

And Marcy adds parents should remind children to put cell phones away and pay attention to where they’re going. Transitioning to a new routine can be stressful, so she urges adults to ask children what they’re worried about – then really listen, and let them know you’re there to help. “The parent may not know specifically that their child has been bullied,” she explains. “But if their child seems extremely anxious about going back to school, that may be a sign that there’s something going on at school that is beyond the typical back-to-school jitters.” Marcy says parents can also emphasize positive aspects, such as meeting people from different backgrounds and making new friends. She adds encourage children to be kind, and to ask other children questions about themselves, which can help make the transition into a new school year easier for everyone.

Up Close & Personal With Benjamin Bratt

Benjamin Bratt has been a successful actor for over two decades, winning a Spirit Award for his work as producer and star of “La Mission,” written and directed by his younger brother Peter. The film also earned a Best Indie Film nomination from the NAACP and GLAAD, as well as multiple Imagen Awards for Best Picture and Best Actor. His work in Piñero received high praise while “Traffic” received five Academy Award nominations and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble Cast. Bratt has over 25 films to his credit some of which include: “The River Wild,” “Blood In, Blood Out,” “Clear and Present Danger,” “Miss Congeniality,” “Love In The Time of Cholera,” “Snitch,” and did the voice of Manny in “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” Bratt first became most recognizable when he costarred with Jerry Orbach in the iconic “Law & Order” series. Other television credits include: “The Cleaner,” “Private Practice,” “Modern Family,” and “24: Live Another Day.” Bratt, the son of a Peruvian mother and a father of English, German, and Austrian descent, grew up in San Francisco where he attended Lowell High School, continuing his education at the University of California at Santa Barbara and received theatre training at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He is married to actress Taliso Soto, has two children, Sophia and Mateo, and resides in Los Angeles. A most charming and fun Bratt recently sat down with a select group of journalists to discuss his latest film, “The Infiltrator,” along with other very personal topics. The following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. Bratt: I see some familiar faces here. We never leave. (Laughter) Bratt: You’ve been here for a lot of years. (Laughter) Server brings in cup of coffee. Bratt: This is nice. Who’s picking up that tab? (Laughter) How did you get involved with “The Infiltrator?” Bratt: I was surprisingly quite unfamiliar with the story. I think most of us are, which is shocking if you consider that it is one of the largest drug busts ever put on record. Brad Furman is a long-time friend of mine. I knew Brad when he was a kid. He was the 19-year-old

assistant to my agent at ICM in New York when I was working on “Law & Order” back in the 1990s. He use to run scripts down to me and was kind of wet behind the ears, but very enthusiastic. Who knew that he would grow up into this very insightful, skilled, thoughtful director. I’m super proud of what he’s accomplished as a director, obviously starting with “The Lincoln Lawyer.” He’s still young and has clearly demonstrated to all of us that he has so much more potential that is still untapped.

Did you have to audition for the role of the drug lord Roberto Alcaino? Bratt: (Laughing & Joking) Yes. Can you believe the bastard made me audition? (Laughter). No, of course not. One of the many things I appreciate about Brad is that he is deeply loyal and that is one of the themes we explore in the film. He’s worked with Yul Vazquez quite a few times as well as John Leguizamo and, of course, Bryan (Cranston) who was in “The Lincoln Lawyer.” So what you have is a pattern of mutual respect and loyalty playing out in a professional scenario. Who doesn’t want to work with people you respect and like? What is the advantage of having a tribe of actors who have the director in common? Bratt: Comfortability is certainly an aspect of the desire to create such a tribe, but you also have to be entirely trusting of what their abilities are and have a firm belief that they can deliver what is expected of them. It’s not like he gave me the role because he thought I was a nice guy or due to our personal history. Did you have any trepidations about accepting the role? Bratt: In a way Brad courted me. I had done a number of jobs where I walked in similar territory and I was reluctant, on some level, to step into a role of yet another cartel leader. But, the thing that convinced me to take on the role was that he was very interested in showing an aspect of the humanness of a person like that. In fact, although he sees his business from the prospective of the mere practicality of supply and demand, his individual actions have consequences, and we see that for Bryan’s character of Bob Musella, as well. While you’re achieving your agenda of taking down a criminal, there’s fallout all around you. In both cases, I think on some

L-R: Benjamin Bratt’s Roberto Alcaino forms a close friendship with undercover federal agent Bob Mazur. Photo: Courtesy of Broad Green Pictures level these men are mirror images of each other. They are both family men and while their business life is a separate entity from their personal life, there’s potential danger for their respective loved ones. What are their similarities? Bratt: They expect of themselves, and seek within others that they want to have in their social circles, a kind of integrity or kind of principle, which begins with trustworthiness. That’s why they’re drawn to each other. But, through their actions, through their choices, how they conduct themselves, there is often times collateral damage. What kind of research did you do in preparation? Bratt: Well for one, you start with the book, which the screenplay is based upon. It’s kind of a bible of actual information on what really went down. The real Bob Mazur is a fantastic raconteur. His memory is practically photographic. The way he tells it, it could make for very dry reading. You’re reading about all the bureaucracy and the hoops they have to jump through, but when you get right down to the nitty gritty of what he did, how deeply undercover he went to pull off this operation, it’s nothing less than thrilling. I think the book came out in 2010 and it seemed like such an obvious choice to translate to film, it’s surprising to me that it took so long because it’s so cinematic in nature. When you actually see it rendered in the film, it’s almost unbelievable. How much character direction did you get from Brad? Bratt: Beyond his sharing his feelings on how he wanted to bring an honesty and humanity to the character, August 17, 2016

what I found incredibly helpful, in addition to the material I sourced from the book, were the personal stories that Bob shared with me. But the real ace in the hole were the actual secret recordings he gave me of meetings he had with Alcaino. Although I didn’t have access to any of the photographs or video images of what this man looked like, and to this day I don’t really have a solid idea of what he looks like, I got a clear picture of how I wanted to play him from listening to his voice, the gregariousness of his nature, to the inherent charm of how he communicated about anything - from something as mundane as the meal he had the night before to when the “baby” is going to be delivered in Philadelphia. His girlfriend is about to deliver the “baby.” Of course, that’s all secret code talk for the drug shipment that’s going to arrive any day. So, that proved invaluable to me. For all the charm, sophistication, and worldliness that he exhibits, Brad and I wanted to make sure that there was always the presence of danger because, for all of his charm, this man is truly dangerous. How dangerous was he? Bratt: He was one of the top lieutenants within Roberto Escobar’s Medellín Cartel. What I do know is that he had direct contact with board members of the cartel and one can only imagine some of the things that went on during those meetings. Was it your intention to make this bad guy really likeable and what were the character choices you made? Bratt: Well it was a bit of a conundrum because his actions in his kind of business had a real ugliness. It’s power and violence and murder and

mayhem and menace. And yet, I thought it was a mistake as an actor to predetermine or prejudge whether he’s a good guy or a bad guy. You can’t go into any characterization with that opinion or attitude or approach because it’s sudden death. What it will convey ultimately is a one-dimensional character – the figure in the black hat that you’ve you seen countless time. What I was more interested in, and it fell in line obviously with what Brad’s desire was as the director, was to make him far more complex and that’s there on the page thankfully. I thought it would be more interesting to highlight those human qualities. I had to find something lovable that I could appreciate in this person. What we all discover, as we watch the film, is that he possesses a slew of qualities that we all wish for ourselves and actually seek out in our social circles. He’s a loyal friend. He’s a man of faith. He’s a devoted family man. He’s a loving husband and father. He’s a very successful and charming businessman. What’s not to like? Yes. He’s engaged in criminal activity and is quite dangerous, but he has a twisted logic in how he rationalizes his world. He sees it as an issue of supply and demand. “I wouldn’t be what I am unless America made me this way. I didn’t force drugs on anyone. You all want drugs? I’m the man to supply them.” “I could be sweating my balls off in a restaurant somewhere,” he says, “but this is a smarter choice for me.” So, that’s his twisted logic that justifies his work. Was there a particularly difficulty in making the film? Bratt: No actually. The one thing that I’m really happy about, having seen the film Continues on Page 11 www.desertstarweekly.com

MUSIC Roots, blues and pop masters shine on new titles BY ROBERT KINSLER

Upcoming albums from leading Southern Californiabased artists Michael Ubaldini and Seth Swirsky, as well as an essential Hank Williams collection and a superb blues compilation from Alligator Records make for some mighty fine listening.

Artist: Michael Ubaldini Title: Starshaker (Blackwater Records) You might like if you enjoy: John Fogerty, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main Street” Tell me more: AltAmericana rocker Michael Ubaldini is set to release an album that is very much of our time even while it is steeped in authentic songcraft that ensures it is a masterwork for the ages. While even gifted songwriters are often content to revisit the same themes over and over again, Ubaldini is able to draw inspiration aplenty from a farflung assortment of places. His “Starshaker” is ripe full of timely observations: the biting “Politician Superstar” is likely the sharpest jab ever aimed as

modern-day candidates while “Jeanie Lees Phone” takes an equally direct swing at those who see the world exclusively through their smart phone. The affecting Mississippi bluesdraped “Ballad of Brian Jones” celebrates the enduring power of the late Rolling Stones guitarist’s legacy; authentic country (including some great pedal steel from Gary Brandin) is used to support Ubaldini’s infatuation-filled tale of “Tombstone Woman.” Information: rocknrollpoet.com. Artist: Seth Swirsky Title: Circles and Squares (Grimble Records) You might like if you enjoy: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, ELO, Brian Wilson Tell me more: Seth Swirsky is a true power-pop master, able to tap into the best of his influences and create something as contemporary as it is original. His latest album “Circles and Squares” marks another milestone for the singer-songwriter/multiinstrumentalist (who plays the majority of instruments on the 16-song set). The shimmering

“Shine” (which could have been at home on the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds”), wistful “Far Away” (tapping into a Jeff Lynne-meets-Paul McCartney vibe), beautiful baroque pop musical proposal “Let’s Get Married” and sparse acoustic ballad “The Simplest Way” are among the many fantastic originals on “Circles and Squares.” If Roger McGuinn and Sir Paul had ever teamed for a song, it might come off as the scintillating “Table.” Wonderful stuff start to finish. Artist: Hank Williams Title: The Complete Mother’s Best Collection… Plus! (Time Life) You might like if you enjoy: Hank Williams, Michael Ubaldini Tell me more: When Hank Williams died in January 1953, he was only 29. Despite his young age, he left an enduring legacy widely acknowledging him as the first and most formidable country music superstar; he is also one of America’s greatest songwriters of the 20th century. Now fans of “the Hillybilly Shakespeare”

can dig even deeper into his mastery thanks to one of the most important collections of 2016. “Hank Williams: The Complete Mother’s Best Collection…Plus!” features 15 audio CDs and 1 DVD gather together in a box set. There are 142 performances from Williams’ “Mother’s Best Flour Radio Shows” recorded in 1951 and the DVD that features behind-the-scenes conversations with Williams’ daughter (Jett Williams) and several of Hank Williams’ band members (Don Helms and Big Bill Lister). Information: HankWilliams.com. Artists: Shemekia Copeland, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Tommy Castro, more Title: Alligator Records 45th Anniversary Collection (Alligator Records) You might like if you enjoy: Joe Bonamassa, James Cotton, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Lee Rocker Tell me more: It is difficult to single out any of the tracks on the outstanding collection “Alligator Records 45th Anniversary Collection.”

Disc 1 includes memorable tracks from a slew of legends including Shemekia Copeland, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Koko Taylor and Tommy Castro & the Painkillers. Up-andcomers including guitar great Selwyn Birchwood, Toronzo Cannon, and the amazing Moreland & Arbuckle bring a modern-day energy to the proceedings. Moving on the disc 2, what better way to start than with the amazing tandem of harmonica legend James Cotton and guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa to deliver the hardcharging “Cotton Mouth Man.” The slow side of Chicago blues is captured by the great Albert Collins on “If Trouble Was Money.” The late Johnny Winter is celebrated via a propulsive slide guitar-powered “Shake Your Moneymaker.” And this writer hasn’t even mentioned outstanding turns from Lee Rocker, Delbert McClinton, Mavis Staples and Guitar Shorty. There are stellar moments everywhere. Information: alligator.com.

Up Close & Personal With Benjamin Bratt Continued from Page 10 now only once, is that it does have a very international, grand feel to it, but that being said, it’s likely that it’s no secret that we had limitations in terms of budget, location, and various other challenges that accompany independent film making so time was not a luxury and that’s what actors need more than anything – time and space to create. But oftentimes you’re thrown right into it and you have to sort of do it on the fly because there’s not a lot of rehearsal time. The good news is when you’re working alongside someone like Bryan or Diane Kruger or Amy Ryan or Yul Vazquez or John Leguizamo, these are folks at the top of their game. The best advice Brad gave me www.desertstarweekly.com

before we started shooting was that I was going to meet Bryan and you’re going to be charmed by how kind and how sweet he is and he is all of those things. He’s probably one of the nicest men you’re ever going to meet but don’t be lulled into it because he is a heavyweight fighter and he’s going to come out swinging so do not show up and think it’s going to be a cakewalk. It’s not. I really took that to heart. It maybe even scared me a little bit. The result is something that I’m actually pretty proud of. Was there one seminal moment when you knew you wanted to be an actor? Bratt: I just remember the first time I got on stage. At my dad’s encouragement, I auditioned for a high school production and got cast as

the devil in “The Devil and Daniel Webster.” I have to confess that the moment I stepped on stage, I felt a surge of energy and creativity and an electricity that I never felt before – not from sports, not from academics, not from anything else, and thought I should check this out. Incidentally, I don’t know if there’s a connection, but my grandfather, George Bratt, was in the “Grand Street Follies” which opened on Broadway in 1924. He also worked with James Cagney. So, it was part of the family lore that acting is in our blood, but no one really bought that. (Laughter)

Family lore or not, just keep on doing what you’re doing! Bratt: Thanks everyone. This was fun. Stay tuned for Part 2 in August 17, 2016

Grand Opening of the Oasis is scheduled for September 8 Soccer field in Oasis opens to the delight of local residents By Desert Star Staff Indio, CA.- Desert Recreation District (DRD) is opening a new soccer field in the unincorporated community of Oasis and the public is invited to come celebrate. On Thursday, September 8, 2016, DRD will host a grand opening event beginning at 6 p.m. during which recognition to those whose hard work contributed to reaching this milestone will be acknowledged, refreshments will be served, and play will begin. The soccer field is located at 88-775 Avenue 76 (between Pierce and Harrison streets) in Oasis. The former elementary school site was purchased by DRD from the Coachella Valley Unified School District to build a 15-acre community park. This is the first and only public park in the community of Oasis. The soccer field

is a temporary measure to provide immediate access to the number one requested activity in the Oasis community, soccer. The community will plan other amenities that will round out the future park over the coming months. People can sign up for the Community Design Team as well as register for the fall season of the new East Valley Soccer League while at the grand opening. Support from the community has been very strong, and as one resident of the area, Pastor Miguel Martinez stated last fall, “we are thrilled”. Pastor Martinez went on to say that when communities do not have activities for the younger members, it is unhealthy for everyone as children are more likely to get into trouble, have medical problems, and not feel safe, among other issues. Inland Congregations United for Change (ICUC), whose efforts to bring people together to strengthen families and improve communities, has also lent its support to DRD.

The project will be completed in phases based on community input to determine the priority facilities to be included by the time the project is completed. DRD is still in the process of securing funding for the complete build-out of the project. The Desert Recreation Foundation, our 501(c) 3 supporting charity, is actively seeking grants and private donations to aid in the completion of this project. Please call Kevin Kalman at (760) 3473484 if you would like to get involved to help raise funds or to make a tax-deductible donation to this project. By Kitty Alvarado PALM SPRINGS, Ca. The heat wave cranked up temperatures in the valley, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory. Even desert residents who are used to high temperatures this time of year are feeling the heat. “It feels hot, you walk outside and it just sucks all your energy out,” says Palm Springs resident James Claude. A family visiting from Philadelphia says they’re trying to adjust to triple digits. “Well we’ve never been anywhere this hot, this is definitely the hottest we’ve been,” says Angela Sarkisian. But they say the heat wave is not putting a damper on their family fun.

“It is blazing hot but it is wonderful,we love being here,” says Jodi Sarkisian adding that the beautiful scenery makes it all worth it and reminds us at least it’s “dry heat”. The popular place to hang out was Tutti Frutti in Downtown Palm Springs, where the cold treats don’t stop flowing. “Being outside for like a couple of seconds is like UGH, but coming in here and having yogurt is very nice,” says Matthew Flores, who is visiting from Orange County. People who live in the valley say cool weather can’t come soon enough, “I cannot wait until it gets cool again.” says Claude.

Long-Term Risks of School Bullying By Desert Star Staff DENVER - Heading back to school means being bullied for 25 percent of teens, in the United States. Nine out of ten LGBT students say they’ve experienced harassment at school and online, and one in five kids admit to doing “some bullying.” Deborah Sandella, a Denver-based psychotherapist and author of “Goodbye Hurt and Pain”, said being bullied can produce lasting psychological impacts on children, even as they grow into adults. “They won’t speak up for themselves, so they end up having repeated experiences of feeling bullied throughout their lives,” she said. “So it’s really very significant both for those who are bullied and those who are the bully.” She said victims are four times more likely to

have anxiety problems, and bullies have a greater risk of developing antisocial personality disorders. Sandella added that victims who end up taking their frustrations out by bullying others are more likely to have panic attacks and suicidal thoughts. Sandella said one simple but effective way kids can disrupt a bully is to have a short phrase at the ready, such as “What was that?” or “That was mean,” and then to walk away. She said since teens typically don’t want to talk about being bullied, parents should check in regularly and pay attention if anxiety levels go up suddenly. She added the experience sends stress hormones throughout the body, so other signs could be head or stomach aches. Sandella noted in most cases, immediate intervention can dissolve an incident within ten seconds.

She said if you’ve been a bully and want to stop, the first thing you should do the next time you get aggressive is to take a deep breath. Sandella said ask yourself

what’s causing your response. Do you feel angry or invisible? She said at that point you can choose to talk through the issue in a nonthreatening way.

to these arrangements being established,” due to the fact there are so many on the site. At the time the statement was written, there were 288 free accommodation listings and 51 for under £10 (US$13) a month. Noting that there are numerous issues at play, many of which are “beyond Shelter’s area of particular expertise,” the charity said it is undeniable that part of the problem is the UK’s housing crisis. “Because while it is a story of men trying to exploit women, the thing that makes that exploitation possible is unaffordable housing and lack of appropriate support services and move on accommodation for those who do find themselves homeless,” Shelter wrote. “High housing costs don’t make these particular exploitative relationships inevitable...but not being able to afford shelter drives people to desperation – and when people are desperate, some kind of exploitation and misery is certain,” the charity concluded.

Craigslist ads offer homeless women indecent proposal

By Desert Star Staff Online advertisements are offering free accommodation to vulnerable homeless women, as long as they are “stunning” and can prove their attractiveness with a picture, a British charity has warned. Posted on Craigslist, the “sordid” ads are “targeting desperate women who feel they have no other options – and women who may already have

experienced sexual or domestic violence,” homelessness charity Shelter said in a statement. There are hundreds of listings on the site, some of which boldly state that women will be given free accommodation if they’re prepared to return the favor in the form of sex. The ads vary from explicit sexual demands to implied intentions. “If any young female

student is in need of free of charge accommodation and is prepared to act as a ‘resource’ in return, then please provide full personal details and a recent pic and reply from your own private email address please. No pic, no reply,” one ad states. Another explicitly states that only “stunning” women need apply. Shelter called the ads

a “dangerous attempt to establish deeply exploitative relationships off the back of homelessness,” noting that the charity sees cases of people trying to exploit the British housing crisis every day. Moreover, the charity noted that many of those targeted in the ads may have already experienced sexual or domestic violence in the past, and noted a unique danger in the current notices. “Women are being asked to enter a space which is entirely controlled by someone else, a person who always has the right to be there, who can say who else can enter the property and on whom they are entirely dependent for shelter,” the charity said. “This is the vile exploitation proposed by these adverts: that women who feel they have no choice enter an arrangement where they feel they never have the choice to say no,” Shelter added. Although the charity noted there is no evidence that women have responded to the ads, it did say “it seems a tangible risk that some lead

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK - Social Security turned 81 years-old this week, but new analysis shows trouble ahead if national leaders don’t act soon. The study by AARP said unless the president and Congress strengthen the Social Security trust fund, New Yorkers paying into the system now could see acrossthe-board cuts of nearly 25 percent by 2034. According

to Laura Palmer, associate state director for community engagement with AARP New York, for the average family in the state, that could be a loss of more than $4,000 a year. “It could also be a 63 percent increase in the number of people living below the poverty level over the age of 65, which is absolutely terrifying to me,” she said. AARP has launched a national campaign at

takeastand.aarp.org, to pressure the presidential candidates to show leadership on Social Security. The problem, Palmer said, is due in part to the large numbers of baby boomers now reaching retirement age, with relatively fewer young workers paying into the system. But she also pointed out that the cap on earnings subject to Social Security tax hasn’t kept

pace with rising incomes. “So there’s a lot of people out there making a lot of money that is not taxed for the purposes of Social Security,” she added. Palmer added that the longer national leaders take to address the problem, the harder it will be to solve. No matter who wins the election this fall, she said the next administration and the new Congress will be critical

5th force of nature possibly discovered, US physicists say

By Desert Star Staff Scientists are ecstatic over the fact that they may have just discovered the fifth fundamental force of nature. The possible discovery of a previouslyunknown subatomic particle looks set to finally bring the elusive dark matter into the mix. The discovery centers on a new type of boson that possesses characteristics previously unseen in particles. Furthermore, its existence casts doubt upon whether the known ‘sector’ of matter and particles exists alongside a ‘dark’ sector – both interacting with each other via another, unseen force.

“If true, it’s revolutionary,” said Jonathan Feng, professor of physics & astronomy at the University of California, Irvine, in a press release. “For decades, we’ve known of four fundamental forces: gravitation, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. If confirmed by further experiments, this discovery of a possible fifth force would completely change our understanding of the universe, with consequences for the unification of forces and dark matter.” UCI researchers arrived at

to Feng, their experiments did not confirm the Hungarians’ findings. That said, they did see “an excess of events that indicated a new particle, but it was not clear to them whether it was a matter particle or a force-carrying particle.” However, this was also the moment of truth, because it led them to a new theory that was stable enough to unite all existing data. This could only mean that a fifth fundamental force was at work. This data was outlined earlier in April, and a follow-up paper was released last Friday on the public arXiv server. The resulting study was published in the journal Physical Review Letters. Dispensing with the dark their conclusions by studying data from Hungarian physicists photon, the physicists posit a “photophobic X boson.” and other prior experiments Other known forces before in the area. At first there was it only acted on electrons disappointment: the scientists and protons. This new force were trying to locate certain ‘dark photons’, or particles that interacts with electrons and neutrons at a very limited would signify the presence of range. Scientists say there is dark matter – the most elusive force in the universe that makes no other boson possessing the same characteristics – up a staggering 85 percent of hence the name ‘X boson’. its mass, according to ICU. By Desert Star Staff The files released by a hacker group that claims to have breached the NSA are authentic, whistleblower Edward Snowden has said, explaining the documents’ importance and potential impact on the US elections and relations with allies around the world. Over the weekend, a mysterious group called Shadow Brokers posted “samples” of files purloined from the Equation Group – widely believed to be a front for the National Security Agency – and said it would sell the rest in exchange for bitcoin. The NSA has yet to comment on the authenticity of the files. Snowden, who blew the whistle on NSA surveillance operations in 2013, posted a series of tweets on Tuesday with his take on the hack. “NSA malware staging servers getting hacked by a rival is not new. A rival publicly demonstrating they have done so is,” the whistleblower wrote,

adding, “I suspect this is more diplomacy than intelligence, related to the escalation around the DNC hack.” A hacker calling himself Guccifer 2.0 has claimed to have breached the computers of the Democratic National Committee, releasing the first batch of documents on his blog in June. Just ahead of the party’s convention in July, WikiLeaks published even more files, which Guccifer 2.0 says he provided. Last week, the hacker published phone numbers, emails and passwords of congressional Democrats as well. The DNC has blamed the Russian government for the hack, though. Noting that “circumstantial evidence and conventional wisdom” have placed the blame for the hack on Russia, Snowden speculated that the Equation Group hack is “likely a warning that someone can prove US responsibility for any attacks that originated from this malware server.” If the hacked files can

prove that Washington has been hacking its allies, or even interfering in their elections, revealing that could have “significant foreign policy consequences,” Snowden noted. “This leak looks like a somebody sending a message that an escalation in the attribution game could get messy fast,” the whistleblower concluded. However, it is possible the files may be made

is extremely light. This is a good thing to a point, since many smaller labs around the world have the chance to take a stab at it and research it further, Feng explains. This discovery, as all good science, brings with it even more exciting questions and could change our understanding of the universe yet again. Feng and team believe that, once combined with existing fundamental forces, we could be looking at “manifestations of one grander, more fundamental force.” Feng also speculates that outside of the standard model of physics exists another, dark sector. Possessing its own matter and set of forces, it sometimes interacts with the area known to us now, the team thinks. Perhaps, evidence of this so-called dark sector was already gleaned in the Hungarian experiment. “This dark sector force may manifest itself as this photophobic force we’re seeing as a result of the Hungarian experiment. In a broader sense, it fits in with our original research to understand the nature of dark matter.” The good news is, “In a broader sense, it fits in with our original research to understand the nature of dark matter.”

has made it clear that it does not believe in editing the data in any way, and intends to publish it raw. As a postscript to his explanation, Snowden noted that the hackers lost access to the server in June 2013 – just as he came forward with his revelations, prompting the NSA to move its cyberattack software to new servers – signing off with, “You’re welcome, NSA. Lots of love.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Thousands of Louisiana Families Stranded By Floods

By Desert Star Staff NEW ORLEANS, -- To provide immediate relief for the victims of the recent historic floods in Louisiana, the Mayor of New Orleans has opened the “NOLA Pay It Forward Fund” for those who want to help the approximately 10,000 people currently living in temporary shelters throughout southeast Louisiana. Within the past several days, approximately 20,000 people have been rescued from their homes due to swollen rivers from recordbreaking rainfall. Proceeds from this fund will support nonprofit organizations working tirelessly in the affected areas to provide assistance and care for residents with emergency needs. As for long-term recovery efforts, the funds will be used to address the comprehensive rebuilding needs of fragile Louisiana communities. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our nearby neighbors affected by this devastating flood,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “We’ve witnessed before how the generosity of friends from around the world can have a profound impact on recovery. Woody Allen Returns To His Roots In “Café Society” Film By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic In a full disclosure confession up front, I have been a fan of Allen Konigsberg, aka Woody Allen, since I saw him perform standup comedy routines in clubs in Chicago, and of course, on TV. When he moved from standup to TV and film writing, to acting, and directing in the late 60s and 70s, I rarely missed a live comedy gig or a film he was connected with. For me, Woody is the quintessential New York comedy writer/performer and the standard bearer of East Coast humor. He has, let us say, always had a thorny relationship with LA, and West Coast culture, which he claimed never suited his lifestyle. He even passed up accepting one of his three writing/director Oscars at ceremonies held in Hollywood years ago. As an embedded New York playwright Allen, however, had to share the comedy crown with the King of comedy playwriting and movies, the nonpareil Neil Simon, eight years his senior. Simon was more of a traditional linear writer who turned his life story into countless award-winning plays and movies. Allen was the newbie champion of the nebbish, nerdy, Jewish social misfit of the counter-culture 60s and 70s. His writing was fresh, funny, and resonated big time with a younger society who was enjoying the benefits of the sexual revolution and the freedom to explore every aspect of American life to its fullest. “Café Society” written and directed by Allen, once again, takes us on a nostalgic journey backward in time to the 1930’s. Gorgeously photographed by Academy Award- winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro who makes the New York romantic sequences a picture-perfect post card truly

‘made for a boy and a girl’, as the lyrics say in Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers’ iconic song tribute to the Big Apple in “I’ll Take Manhattan”. Although the movie is stacked with solid actors and solid performances along with trenchant Allen dialogue, dripping in self-deprecating zingers, some of which still have the bite of the Woody of old, just seem to be firing on just seven cylinders instead of the traditional eight. When Allen places his story in Europe, for example, the languid pace works, as in “Midnight in Paris” and “To Rome with Lo. But once back in the hustle and bustle of New York and L.A. the film slows down. Allen is a sucker for romantic love stories. In “Café Society”, there are so many echoes of past Allen films: ‘Hannah and Her Sisters’, “To Rome with Love”, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, the highly popular and successful “Midnight in Paris”, and now “Café Society”. Allen, at 80, is still relevant when he goes back in time to give us characters with which we can identify. The story in short, revolves around a young New Yorker, (think Woody Allen in his mid -20’s) Bobby Dorfman, terrifically played by Jesse Eisenberg, Eisenberg has steadily grown as an actor since his “Social Network” days. Now he’s more confident and sure of himself as an actor. And he shines as Bobby, who is tired of working in his father’s Jewelry business and moves to Hollywood in the 1930’s to work for his uncle Phil (Steve Carell) a powerful and well-connected movie agent. He soon falls for Phil’s secretary Vonnie (Kristen Stewart), unaware that she is secretly having an affair with his uncle. Stewart and Eisenberg have worked together in three previous films and their on-screen chemistry is spot-on. Stewart’s ambition and vulnerability as Vonnie, are two character flaws that

Blake Lively as Veronica & Jesse Eisenberg as Bobby Dorfman drive her performance making her interesting to watch on screen. Gone, thankfully, are her “Twilight” saga days. Steve Carell keeps widening his range in the roles he tackles. His conflicted movie super-agent husband is a case study of infidelity in a middle-age man of power who feels his mortality and seeks to become younger by having a much younger woman as his partner - but not without the guilt pangs of leaving his wife and children in its wake. It’s a finely judged performance. In time, a disillusioned Bobby returns home to New York to run a nightclub for his

gangster brother Ben (Corey Stoll), where he meets and marries a beautiful divorcee Veronica (Blake Lively). Lively is a real stunner and captures the essence of the Hollywood of the 30’s. Despite her beauty and connections in Hollywood, she chooses Bobby to settle down with and raise a family. All is going well with Bobby and Veronika, until one evening when Phil and Vonnie walk into the now successful nightclub (echoes of “Casablanca”, an Allen film fave). No one knows the New York milieu like Allen except, maybe for Martin Scorsese, when it comes to making

movies about it. “Café Society” is vintage Allen replete with a team of technically gifted artists like production designer Santo Loquasto, and costume designer Suzy Benzinger. However, a note to Allen is in order; At 80 years of age, the narrator’s voice either needs a shot of adrenaline before recording or hire a New York-raised voice-over actor to set the tone for one of the eight million stories in Allen’s ‘Naked City’. “Café Society” is now playing on screens across the country.
