Erin’s Body Found!

Alleged lover Christopher Lee was arrested in Anchorage Alaska for the murder of Erin Corwin.

By Angela Monroe SAN BERNARDINO -Investigators in San Bernardino announced this morning they have found the body of Erin Corwin, and they’ve charged her alleged lover with murder.

Erin’s remains were found on Saturday at the bottom of a mine shaft southeast of Twentynine Palms.

Then Sunday, Marine Corporal Christopher Lee was arrested in Anchorage, Alaska, and is now facing murder charges.

Authorities believe she and Lee were having an affair that began in February.

The 19-year-old woman was reported missing by her husband, Marine Corporal

Jonathan Corwin on June 29th after she didn’t return from a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park.

It took eight weeks, more than 5,000 volunteer hours and a 300 square mile search that included more than 100 mine shafts to find her.

By Angela Monroe, KMIR News DESERT HOT SPRINGS Two suspects are still on the run after a high speed chase that ended in DHS Sunday night.

Police say at about 3:45 Sunday afternoon three men robbed a man at a home on Flora Avenue. The man told officers the three suspects approached him, and a fight started, they brought out weapons and robbed the man then taking off in his vehicle.

That vehicle was spotted by the Cathedral City Police

Department shortly after the call.

DHS Police joined in the pursuit when the vehicle reentered the city. Officers said the pursuit reached speeds up to 90 miles per hour.

The suspects pulled over at Park Lane and Verbena Drive by Desert Springs Middle School.

Two of the suspects ran away.

Police arrested 22-year-old Arturo Echagaray of Desert Hot Springs on charges including home invasion robbery, and battery causing serious injury.

Officers canvassed the area for the outstanding suspects but they were not found. Cathedral City and Palm Springs Police, along with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, and air support from California Highway Patrol helped in the pursuit and search.

Police in Ferguson are violating the First Amendment

Unrest continues in the US town of Ferguson. Reporters complain that police seem to be targeting them as well as protesters by arresting them and keeping them from certain areas - supposedly for safety reasons.

The National Guard may be in Ferguson, but it is keeping its distance from streets filled with protesters.

Meanwhile, police try to enforce restrictions to get a handle on a situation that has flared since Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager,

was fatally shot by a police officer.

Enforcing restrictions appears to include reining in reporters.

Over the past week, several journalists were hindered from researching events in Ferguson, and some were detained. A Getty photographer was arrested while covering the demonstrations and later released. A Washington Post and a Huffington Post reporter were arrested, and an Al Jazeera camera team

Her body was recovered Sunday, and her identity was confirmed using dental records.

Then, her alleged lover was arrested.

“On Sunday at approximately 10pm, Christopher Lee was arrested in Anchorage Alaska for the murder of Erin Corwin,” said Sheriff McMahon.

“Without going to much into the affair issue, the evidence shows us that as early as February of 2014,” said Sgt. Travis Newport with San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Erin went missing June 28th.

She told her husband she was going to Joshua Tree National Park, but detectives found her car near the Marine base two days later.

“There were also other indications that another vehicle had come to pick Erin up from that location where her car was located, in which we further investigated and found that a potential suspect after that was Christopher Lee,” said Sgt. Newport.

Hundreds of people spent thousands of hours searching hundreds of miles in the Mojave Desert to try to find Erin.

Weeks later, the sheriff’s department called the family with word of their grim discovery.

“They felt relieved that at least they had some closure, certainly this is a very

In the most-recent case, two German reporters were handcuffed, arrested and detained for three hours on Monday after allegedly failing to follow police instructions to keep moving on an empty street. The reporters were trying to get photos of a gas station set on fire and looted last week.

“That’s a glaring violation of press freedom.” Frank Herrmann, who writes for German regional papers, calls Ferguson police’s accusations of not following instructions “completely absurd,” adding they were evidently meant to intimidate the reporters.

Police over-reaction “The only way that police are within their rights to detain journalists is if the police are dealing with an emergency situation,” Professor Magarian told DW, adding that in this sense, journalists are like anyone else. However, none of the arrests of members of the press in Ferguson met those criteria; the law professor argues.

“There are too many cases of police seeming to go after journalists not just while the journalists doing their job, but because they’re doing their job.”

And that, Magarian says is a violation of the First Amendment, which also prohibits infringing on the freedom of the press.

Law enforcement officials in Ferguson and in St Louis, County seems to live in a bubble, completely ignorant of the images that people around the country and around the world are getting of what they’re doing, legal expert Gregory Magarian says. “I don’t know what it’s going to take for these people to understand that what they’re doing is appalling to a huge range of people.”

is that in the first drop, many smaller investors get out, the second drop are more middle investors, and the 3rd drop, the large investors retreat, bringing on the largest correction.

In the 90s when the infamous “dot-com bubble” com bubble” occurred, high-flying Internet-based stocks were selling with Price to Earnings (P/E) ratios for companies who had zero profits. The price of the stock could be 400 percent higher than earnings. P/E ratios must be TEN or below when the true correction happens. A good example of this today is to look at Twitter’s stock. Since the November IPO, despite the company not turning a profit since its launch in 2006, Twitter lost $79.4 million on about $317 million in sales in 2012, and was on track for even a steeper loss in 2013, while shares were up 63 percent since Nov., based on momentum and hype. Sound familiar?

And who can forget the October 2008 “irrational exuberance” when the market nosedived over purchasing properties without using sound financial fundamentals.

Bernanke’s quantitative easing (QE) , or printing U.S.Currency backed by the Feds purchase of bonds, has kept our economy afloat since 2007. As the tapering off of QE has begun, we will experience a rise in interest rates and inflation. This will place an even greater burden on the middle class and poverty levels will rise. The result of this change in economic factors could prove a drastic drop in the market. Financial experts have criticized quantitative easing as exasperating wealth inequality. We have experienced this change occur in the last few years.

This could represent a 15 percent or more loss, in a relatively short period of time in the midst of an upward trend; however, it could be much higher and this is why. Our long term secular bear market began in 2000. History tells us that these market cycles range from fifteen to twenty-plus years. That being said, we may have a decade or more to go before the market begins a real recovery. It took four years from Greenspan’s warning in 1996 to the market plunge of 2000. In other words, momentum and hype can sustain rallies for long periods—but not forever. This is not a new phenomenon where markets are concerned. It existed before Alan Greenspan coined the phrase, and is really a symptom of “financial insanity.” Secular cycles in the bear market, historically include three major drops, with each drop in the market being greater than the last. Our second drop in this market cycle was 2007.

While nobody appreciates a meeting in which brevity is the only value, unduly lengthy meetings discourage and exhaust everybody directors, audience and manager. After about 3 hours, good concentration and judgment is hard to come by.

A length of 60-90 minutes is a very reasonable and achievable goal for most board meetings.

Try these tips to get there.

1. Come prepared. Good managers provide boards with “board packets” in advance, helping directors come to the meeting prepared, avoiding time wasted as directors “get up to speed” about items set forth in the packet. Prepared directors are more efficient - read your packet.

2. Avoid overly ambitious agendas. Watch out for the overly loaded agenda. Some issues can dominate a meeting,

requiring thirty minutes or more.

Try to handle only one such issue per meeting, if you can.

Sometimes a board needs to meet more frequently, as there is too much to be done in one meeting.

3. Set the room up for a board meeting (not a town hall meeting). A board which sits facing the audience (and not each other) invites audience participation, but the audience was not elected to serve. The semicircle is the best shape, so the audience can hear as the directors talk - to the other directors.

4.

Use open forum properly. Many meetings are too long because both board and audience fail to respect open forum. During open forum the board should not interrupt, and during the rest of the meeting the audience should not interrupt.

5. Use consent calendars.

Most routine decisions should be handled via consent calendar. Assessment liens, routine bills, and other noncontroversial matters can then be passed with no discussion and one vote. Any director desiring discussion can pull an item from the consent calendar.

6. Don’t force unanimity.

Some excessive deliberation results from over-emphasis upon unanimity. Unanimity is not legally necessary, and puts too much pressure on directors who wish to disagree.

Unanimity is important only on very important subjects on which the community needs to be shown strong board support.

7. It’s okay NOT to speak.

Part of the art of being a great board Chair is recognizing when there is a consensus and it is time to vote. Part of the art of being a great director is recognizing when a motion is clearly on its way to passage so no further remarks are necessary.

8. Use committees. Major topics can be researched, analyzed and discussed in committees or task forces which then recommend action to the board. Committees are also a great place for members to become involved, and to identify potential directors.

9. Keep on track. The Open Meeting Act requires that the board only discuss items which were disclosed on its agenda.

Other spinoff discussions are

often tempting, but that is not fair to the members who did not know it would be discussed and distracts from the agenda at hand. Stay on target.

10. Adopt meeting rules.

Meeting rules educate members regarding meeting procedures, set behavior boundaries, and help curb disruptive behavior.

Adopt meeting rules (and follow them!).

A one hour meeting is a good goal. Try hard to avoid exhausting three hour meetings. Efficient meetings are worthwhile, and will encourage others to take their turn at future board service.

Non-Human Aliens Are Now On Earth A UFO Conference In Joshua Tree

By Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension “Contact In The Desert,” a four-day conference at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center held at the beginning of August 2014, attracted 2,000 people to its discussions of alien visitations to earth, sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFO’s), unexplained crop circles and the relations between the alien visitors and the U.S. Government.

30 speakers, including many of the best-known writers and researchers in the area of ufology, presented their findings during the 70 meetings of this second annual Contact conference. I will first take up the issue of cattle mutilations since that subject has been verified by hundreds of police reports and is not simply another rumor about big-headed aliens.

Then I will quote from an important document spoken about at the Contact conference titled “Unidentified Flying Objects And ExtraTerrestrial Visitation of Earth.” This is a 19 page transcript-summary of a briefing given by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to President Ronald Reagan on March 6 to 8, 1981. This document lost its top-secret security classification after 25 years, as now happens under current U.S. Government regulations, and is now available on the Internet.

Then I will write about another event mentioned at the Contact conference: an armed invasion of an alien base at Dulce, Montana in 1979 after a section of the U.S. Government evidently believed the aliens there violated its agreements with the government by kidnapping too many humans. A 160 page report of this incident is available now on the Internet at no cost.

I was very impressed with the

film about cattle mutilation shown at the conference. So when I went home, I immediately read the 15 page Wikipedia Internet article on cattle mutilation that starts as follows: “A hallmark of these incidents is the reportedly surgical nature of the mutilation and unexplained phenomena such as the complete draining of the animal’s blood, loss of internal organs with no obvious point of entry, and surgically precise removal of the reproductive organs...”

“Another reported event is that the animal is found dumped in an area where there are no marks or tracks leading to or from the carcass, even when it is found in soft ground or mud.”

“The surgical-type wounds tend to be cauterized by an intense heat and made by very sharp precise instruments with no bleeding apparent. Often flesh will be removed to the bone in an exact manner...such as removal of flesh from around the jaw exposing the mandible.”

The film shown at Contact about cattle mutilations clearly showed all these aspects and strongly suggested that the only plausible reason for these strange mutilations was an alien study of biology on earth with a probable focus on manipulating human DNA. There have been two independent federal investigations in the United States of these mutilations.

The briefing of President Ronald Reagan by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) about alien visitations to Earth took place on March 6 to 8, 1981.

It was conducted by CIA Director William Casey and a CIA employee who was the caretaker of above top-secret CIA documents about the aliens.

The Caretaker made the following report at the briefing.

“The United States of America has been visited by ExtraTerrestrial visitors since 1947. We have proof of that.

However, we also have some proof that Earth has been visited for many thousands of years by various races of ExtraTerrestrial visitors. Mr. President, I’ll just refer to those visits as ETs.” “In July 1947 a remarkable event occurred in New Mexico.

During a storm, two ET spacecraft crashed. One crashed southwest of Corona, New Mexico and one crashed near Datil, New Mexico.

The U.S. Army eventually found both sites and recovered all of the debris and one live Alien. I’ll refer to this live Alien as ‘EBE 1.’ “ “PRESIDENT REAGAN: What does that mean? Do we have codes or a special terminology for this?” “ T h e C a re t a k e r : M r.

West Nile Virus Threat Increases in Coachella Valley

13 more mosquito samples test positive for the virus in the North Shore-Mecca Area.

By Desert Star Staff INDIO, Ca.-The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District received confirmation from the Center for Vectorborne Diseases at UC Davis that 13 more mosquito samples from nine traps in the Mecca/North Shore areas tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) bringing the total number of WNV-positive mosquito samples to 21 this year. This is in addition to three sentinel chicken blood samples that tested positive for the virus earlier this week.

Due to the elevated activity of WNV in the east Valley, the District has scheduled ultra-low volume (ULV) ground applications, using truck-mounted sprayers to reduce the risk of disease transmission to humans by adult mosquitoes. Ground ULV will begin Friday, August 15 and continue through Tuesday, August 19, between 7 and 10:30 p.m., in the East Valley on Lincoln Street,

weather permitting.

The District will also apply barrier treatments in the Mecca and North Shore areas where West Nile viruspositive mosquitoes was detected. A light mist used frequently by public health agencies will be applied on vegetation where mosquitoes hide and rest. These treatments will be carried out between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., starting August 15, weather permitting. Application routes will be posted at http://www.cvmvcd.org/ adulticiding.htm. All products used are registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for controlling mosquitoes and protecting public health.

The products are applied according to label instructions by trained and certified technicians. Although the District’s mosquito control products pose a low risk, some people may prefer to avoid exposure. To minimize exposure, residents and pets

should remain indoors and keep windows closed during and for 30 minutes following ground ULV application. Signs will be posted along the ULV routes informing residents of the control efforts. If you do not want your property treated, please fill out a “No Treatment” form at www. cvmvcd.org or call the District at (760) 342-8287. In addition, District staff are intensifying mosquito surveillance, searching out breeding sites, and conducting larval control where appropriate.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WEST NILE VIRUS: WNV is transmitted through the bite of an contaminated mosquito.

Mosquitoes acquire WNV by feeding on tainted birds.

Most individuals infected with WNV will not experience any illness. Others will have mild symptoms, such as fever, headache, and body aches.

However, young children, the elderly, or individuals with

lowered immune systems are at greater risk of experiencing more severe symptoms when infected. Anyone with symptoms should contact their health care provider.

So far, in California, 57 people from 13 counties have tested positive for the virus this year. Four people have died. There have been no human cases detected in Riverside County in 2014. For the latest statewide statistics for WNV activity, please visit http://westnile.ca.gov.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites: • Apply Insect Repellent.

Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] or IR3535 according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be

used on children under three years of age.

• Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours. Dawn and dusk are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities during that time.

• Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Wear long-sleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors to help keep mosquitoes away from skin.

Mosquito-Proof Your Home • Drain Standing Water.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places for mosquitoes to breed by draining/discarding items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty unused flowerpots and wading pools.

Change water in birdbaths and pet bowls at least weekly. · Install or Repair Screens.

By KMIR News Staff LA QUINTA, Ca. An animal control officer saved a bighorn sheep Sunday evening in La Quinta.

Riverside County officer Kyle Stephens responded to the PGA West Country Club Sunday (Aug. 17) at about 6 p.m. after receiving a call from a security guard with a report of a bighorn sheep stuck in a canal.

Peninsula bighorn sheep, an endangered species, often roam onto the golf courses in the PGA West complex to

chomp on the soft grasses at the pristine courses. The sheep that ended up in a canal on Sunday was discovered near the Arnold Palmer Golf Course and Riverside County Animal Services was contacted.

Officer Stephens said the animal appeared lethargic and he could see hoof marks where the sheep had unsuccessfully attempted to pull himself out of the water. But too much algae or moss made the surface too slick for the sheep to

make it out, he said.

The officer used his control stick to loop one of the sheep’s horns, then he made sure to find a flat surface to firmly plant his feet to make sure he didn’t take a plunge.

Once he felt he had secure footing, he started to pull.

“I was worried about whether he might pull back and force me in,” Stephens said. “When I boosted him out, I could tell he was helping me out as best he could. It would have been much tougher going without his help. He

was definitely helping me as I helped him.”

(NOTE: The officer didn’t know if the sheep was a male or female, but called the animal a “him” during his quotes because he presumed it was a male due to the larger horns and the defined curvature of the horns.)

When the sheep was finally out, he didn’t leave in a hurry. “It was if he wanted to stick around just for a moment to say thanks,” joked

Stephens. “Then he took off into the bushes and back into the nearby hills.”

Some golfers took a break from their action to watch Stephens rescue the sheep and one woman videotaped the scene. “Everyone was smiling after the sheep was out and back into nature,” Stephens said. “I was happy too.

Robin Williams—Thanks for the Laughter It’s hard to imagine that the wild, wacky bundle of energy known as Robin Williams is no longer with us. For young and old alike he made us laugh and gave us countless movie memories. For example, the little kid in all of us treasures the loveable Genie he gave voice to in Walt Disney’s animated hit, “Aladdin.” When released from captivity inside a golden lamp, Robin’s Genie became a magical presence that was larger than life—a giant, genial blue genie with a range of 50 voices. Much of the merry vocal madness was improvised by the playful comic who was allowed to release his own internal comic genie in the recording studio.

A shy person in his youth, Robin studied acting in high school and college, then went on to Julliard. But his career really took off when he landed a guest-starring role as Mork, an alien from Ork on Garry Marshall’s “Happy Days.” Viewers fell in love with the madcap Mork and Williams was right away signed to do the spin-off series “Mork & Mindy” with Pam Dauber who premiered in 1978. In a tribute to Robin on ABCs “20/20” writer/ director Marshall talked about Robin’s audition which he did “standing on his head.” His comic craziness at once won over the director who had tears in his eyes as, he spoke about his friend.

Later in his career Williams took on a more serious role in Penny Marshall’s film “Awakenings” in which he starred opposite Robert De Niro.

In 1980, Williams made his film debut in the title role of “Popeye” for director Robert Altman. “The World According to Garp” and “Moscow on the Hudson” followed. His first

Academy Award nomination was for his role in Barry Levinson’s comedy-drama “Good Morning, Vietnam.” “Dead Poets Society,” directed by Peter Weir, earned him, his second Oscar nomination and his third nomination was for his work in Terry Gilliam’s “The Fisher King.” He finally landed the golden statuette for his supporting role in “Goodwill Hunting,” written

He won Grammys for his comedy records that included: “Reality, What a Concept” and “An Evening at the Met” which appeared on HBO and was the culmination of a 23 city sold-out tour. This marked the first time a solo comic had taken the stage in the renowned opera hall.

However, many of his fans may not be aware that the comic also starred with Steve Martin in Mike Nichols’ off-Broadway adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” and not long ago he returned to the New York stage as a Bengal tiger in a Kabul zoo on Broadway.

At heart, Robin was a standup comic. In fact, his career got started in 1976 when he began performing regularly at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, which is where he was spotted by casting agents who recognized his great comic gifts.

Even if we never got to see him live on stage, we had numberless chances to be beguiled by his wild and crazy comedy when he guested with Leno and Letterman or appeared on innumerable TV entertainment shows.

Besides giving us plenty to laugh about, even when he was hurting in his own private life, he also gave his time to humanitarian organizations and was a primary force in “Comic Relief” along with his comedy buddies Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg. He also went to the Middle East to entertain the troops and was the heir apparent to Bob Hope and his USO Tours. Robin loved his audiences at home and abroad, and they loved him in return.

He was a also a good friend to others, especially Christopher Reeve. They were classmates

in acting school and remained life-long friends. In an interview, following his terrible accident, Reeves said at one point he didn’t want to go on existing and even contemplated taking his own life, but after a visit from Robin, his will to live was reawakened. His friend not only consoled him, he made him laugh again.

While marriages proved to be a rocky road, he fathered three children he loved deeply. In an interview, he spoke about how much each child meant to him.

He also had his ups and downs with substance abuse throughout his life, but the tragic, untimely death of his comedic buddy John Belushi, from a drug overdose, aided Robin seek professional advice During trying times in his life, he always put on a happy face, but sadly, in the end his demons led to despair.

During an Actor’s Studio interview, when asked what he wanted to hear from God when he got to heaven, Robinnreplied with a twinkle in his eye, “ There’s a place for you here in the front row.” I am sure his wish has been granted—and not only will he have a front-row seat. He will also take center stage and crack up the angels and saints. In fact, the Comedy store marquee posted their farewell saying: “Make God Laugh.” And I am sure he will.

As for me, perhaps my favorite Robin Williams film was the hilarious, but bittersweet comedy, “Mrs. Doubtfire” where he dressed up as a Nanny to be with his three children following a divorce where he lost custody of his kids. The Chris Columbus film co-starred Sally Field and was one I saw often with my mom who absolutely loved it. Dear Robin, thanks for the memories and thanks for the laughter.

It’s not the first time the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control has heard about this issue.

“We do get complaints from people who like to visit the park, especially when it’s hot now people like to go out in the dusk which is also when mosquitoes like to be out,” says Greg White, Vector Ecologist.

Some residents living nearby are concerned the

mosquitoes may be breeding inside stagnant water.

“Luckily, we’re not having much breeding there right now; the technicians are keeping a close eye on that and keeping the numbers down,” says White.

“Wine And Unwind” In Temecula’s Wine Country

By Pamela Price Exclusive to the Desert Star Weekly What happens when you combine scintillating wines with salubrious spa treatments in Temecula Valley’s wine country ? Ask Grace Robbins, author and spa fan who escaped from the desert’s 100 degree plus temperature with friends in tow for a day trip. The stress scenic 65-mile, ninety-minute drive on Highway 74 to Highway 79 via Anza was a breeze. Traffic was light and the mountain views mesmerizing, especially when accentuated by unexpected sculptures of horses and other unforeseen art forms along the route.

Blending a condensed wine tour ( Temecula’s official count is “approximately 40 wineries” according to the Temecula Valley Winegrower’s Association) began at the South Coast Winery, Resort & Spa’s Vineyard Rose Restaurant. On the table was a platter of house made potato chips dressed with blue cheese, bacon, diced tomatoes and green onions. This was a prelude to Vino-Vinyasa, a one-hour group therapy r yoga class at the resort’s GrapeSeed Spa. The class concluded with a tasting of seven wines from South Coast’s wine cellar, four red, two white and one sparkling. Guests can rent a cabana for the day and stay longer. The swimming pool has its own sound system, so after a few sips of wine you might be tempted to stay longer and sign on for the GrapeSeed facial and massage the following day.

Coachella Valley Students Make It To College Cal State University of San Bernardino Signs Historic Agreement To Help

By Desert Start Staff PALM DESERT, Calif.

– Qualifying high school students from three Coachella Valley school districts will be guaranteed admission to Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus thanks to a historic agreement signed on Monday, Aug. 18.

Cal State San Bernardino President Tomás D. Morales, along with Superintendent Darryl Adams from Coachella Valley Unified, Superintendent Gary Rutherford from Desert Sands Unified and Christine Anderson from Palm Springs Unified, signed a memorandum of understanding that will help make college a reality for the three districts’ students.

“We believe this partnership will help build new educational opportunities for students from throughout the Coachella Valley and elevate our area’s collegegoing and college-completion rates, which are among the lowest in the nation - a situation we’re all committed to changing,” Morales said. “As part of this agreement, the districts will provide incoming high school freshmen with a challenging academic program and the appropriate advising support to help them meet eligibility requirements for the California

State University system.”

This means that all students from the three districts who stay on track with good grades and meet college entrance pre-requisites, known as the A-G requirements, as well as criteria for impacted majors, will automatically earn a place in at Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus, Morales said. The A-G requirements are college preparatory courses in history, social science, English, math, lab sciences and a language other than English.

The agreement will not only make the path to college smoother for qualified students, but it will also be beneficial once they arrive at campus. Students will need few, if any, remedial classes and will be able to start taking courses within their major sooner, which helps them to graduate in a timely manner.

Morales said studies show that the percentage of students who come to college not needing remedial classes graduate at significantly higher numbers than students who need remediation. Adams called it a wonderful opportunity for the district’s students and vowed that students from Coachella Valley Unified “will be prepared.”

Rutherford called the event a big day for Desert Sands Unified,

which like many other school districts, had been struggling with scarce resources to educate its students. Rutherford also said the Palm Desert Campus should adjust its master plan because “we plan on filling this facility to overflowing.”

Anderson said Cal State San Bernardino’s work with the school districts “was going to

make a massive difference to the families in our region.”

Sharon Brown-Welty, the new dean of the Palm Desert Campus, praised the Coachella Valley for its foresight into advancing education.

“This community has an amazing output and support for education,” she said.

The agreement marks the

eighth agreement the university has signed with school districts in San Bernardino and Riverside counties since the fall of 2013.

86-Year-Old Utah Woman Writes Romance Novel

By KMIR News Staff SALT LAKE CITY - An 86-year-old Utah woman became a first-time novelist by writing a steamy romance novel about a bored housewife.

Georgia Gorringe said it took her five years to write the tale of a woman who listens to talk radio and is turned on by

the voice of a man she hears.

“And that voice on the radio, oh, he had a magic voice! And it just turned her on!”

Gorringe said laughing during an interview with KUTV (http://bit. ly/1oXd2Hj).

Her adult daughter, Bobbie Posey, is proud of her mother’s accomplishment but says she

was taken aback by the amount of steaminess in the book.

“Sometimes I’m like, mother, how could you do that?

How can you write that?” said Posey. “But she did!”

The 176-page book, titled “No Good-Bye,” came out in February and is available on Kindle and Amazon. It

isn’t available in book stores.

Gorringe wrote it under her pen name, Georgie Marie, and released it using a company that helps authors self-publish.

“Sometimes, the sound of a voice is all it takes to dial up a fine romance,” the tease on Amazon says. “But can you really fall in love with someone

when you have never been in the same room?”

Gorringe, who is a greatgreat grandmother, insists the story is all fiction, but her daughter isn’t buying it.

“A lot of it is actually reallife,” said Posey. “I mean, we know who she’s talking about.”

He may not have a hard time making a decision. He told The Associated Press on Monday that he has always been a fan of anti-heroes and said one of his favorite DC Comics characters is Black Adam.

Appearing in Mexico City to promote “Hercules,” Johnson

said he will make sure comic fans are not disappointed.

“I am putting my heart and soul and my bones into this role,” he said.

Johnson didn’t say whether his character will appear in the film “Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice,” which is scheduled to be released in 2016.

The Sandwich Spot Continues To Hit The Spot

By Dan Marinelli Palm Springs – The sandwich is not exactly the culinary equivalent to the Mona Lisa. Sandwiches get a badwrap. They are considered simple; they are to-go food – something has only to be eaten when in too much of a hurry to get something better. Proving these notions wrong, The Sandwich Spot in Palm Springs is more of a destination than an afterthought.

It’s amazing that one of the if not best sandwiches in the Coachella Valley come from a place that originated in Northern California. In 2005, Tom Slick opened the first Sandwich Spot in Sacramento, and business has been booming ever since. The eatery’s commitment to serving amazingly fresh breads and veggies that supplement hearty cuts of meat and savory sauces is what keeps lunchtime lines long regularly.

The mom-and-pop restaurant was so sought-after, the only way to feed more people was to open more Spots.

Including the Palm Springs location, the one-of-a-kind sandwich establishment opened 21 additional shops, with another three that are coming soon.

The Sandwich Spot is a cut above. Creating a good sandwich requires ingredient excellence, from the freshness of bread to the quality of the veggies. Once top-notch ingredients have been attained, the only remaining way to elevate your sammy is to get

creative, and there is no limit to imagination when it comes to making a sandwich at The Sandwich Spot.

If one of the 24 arbitrarily named sandwiches like The Djokovic (hot turkey, bacon, cheddar cheese and avocado), The French Open (marinated chicken, hot sauce, blue cheese dressing and pepper jack cheese) or The Dirty Weekend (hot roast beef, 1000 islands dressing and melted cheddar) does not seem to catch the taste bud, there is always the createyour-own option. In case there is a picky eater, all sandwiches can be customized. The Sandwich Spot, however, suggests that all sandwiches come with everything: mayo, mustard, secret sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions and spicy pickled peppers.

Generally speaking, one part of the sandwich that does not get enough attention is the bread but The Sandwich Spot does their rolls right. Messages to Moore’s lawyer, Bertuzzi’s agent and the Canucks were not immediately returned.

On March 8, 2004, Bertuzzi, then playing for the Vancouver Canucks, hit Moore from behind.

The Colorado Avalanche rookie crashed face first to the ice, leaving him with a concussion and fractured vertebrae.

Moore alleges the Canucks had put a bounty on him following his check that injured their captain, Markus Naslund.

Bertuzzi pleaded guilty to criminal assault causing bodily harm. He was sentenced in 2006 to one year of probation and 80 hours of community service.

There has been years of legal wrangling since. The civil case was filed in Ontario court in 2006 but was slowed by delays.

Moore, now 35, never fully recovered from his injuries and was unable to keep playing. In March, a day before the 10th anniversary of the play, he told The Canadian Press he still has headaches and low energy.

“I lost my entire career in my rookie year,” he said. “I think any player put in that situation would do the same thing. I can’t recover anything else. I can’t recover my career, the experience of living out my dream from the time I was 2 1/2 years old of playing in the NHL.” It all started on Feb. 16, 2004, when Moore flattened Naslund with an open-ice hit that left Vancouver’s scoring star with a concussion. The play drew no punishment from the NHL.

Major retaliation was expected. Vancouver’s Brad May was quoted as saying there was a “bounty” on Moore. But when the teams next met on March 3, with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in the house, there were no incidents.

Not so on March 8, a 9-2 Colorado victory. Moore squared off in a fight against Matt Cooke in the first period, and it appeared that was the end of it. But things got nasty in the third period.

Moore was challenged again.

He turned away. Bertuzzi skated up behind him, tugging on his jersey, then punched him from behind and fell on top of him as others piled on. Moore lay motionless on the ice in a pool of blood before being removed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

Bertuzzi was suspended for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, which cost him about $502,000. He didn’t play during the 2004-05 lockout season but was reinstated for the 2005-06 season. He has since continued his career, most recently with Detroit. Source: KMIR

“We are pleased that the resolution of this matter allows the parties to turn the page and look to the future,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in an email.

Making Sense When Our Heroes Die OP/ED Renee Baribeau Everyone is essentially the same, yet, in our society, we continually put celebrities on pedestals and have unrealistic expectations of how they should live their lives. When they die from drug overdose or suicide, we mourn as if we’ve lost a family member or a very dear friend.

They are no different than the common addict in the street who succumbs to the needle.

Depression is a powerful and painful illness that can take over anybody’s life. While I do not know Robin Williams’ pain, I am familiar with my own. At the age 30, I owned a successful restaurant and was a world-class chef, yet; I spent two days a month in a dark room hiding behind heavy curtains. This pattern of desolation

haunted me for years until one day I found myself propped-up on a cot in the lock-down ward of a hospital. Despite this, I was one of the lucky ones. During my stay in what was then referred to as a mental ward, a kind Dr. explained to me the reason for my unhappiness. He gave me fresh insights and provided me with tools that enabled me to recognize and deal with the source of my illness. This would eventually release me from an inner world of despair into a bright new spiritual world of hope and promise.

Initially, quitting drugs and alcohol only exacerbated my suffering. Underneath this smiling easy-going gal, lurked a churning, boiling rage. During this period in my life, I chose Ayurvedic medicine over lithium, fire walking over AA, and shamanism over the orthodox teachings of the church.

I have learned that there are many paths up to the treacherous mountain.

For the past year, I have been working with young drug addicts. I deal directly with many souls who have fallen off the path.

Are their lives any less important?

Recently, a young man in his early twenties passed away. I spent an hour going through his Facebook page and realized how many lives

he had touched. Although he has not left behind a legacy of fame and artist accomplishment like Robin Williams, he has touched the lives of hundreds of souls.

Recently, a client asked me if everyone finds God. I explained to her that we all had different lessons to learn. My spiritual salvation manifested as a buoy that was tossed out to me as I floundered in the fiery pit of my personal insanity. It wasn’t until I saw my individual brokenness

mirrored in others that I could emerge from those heavy curtains.

Depression can strike anyone regardless of his or her social or economic status. For some, the pain is too great to bear.

I have developed healthy living habits that allow me to remain balanced, positive and motivated.

I am grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences with others as I teach them how to rise from the ashes of despair and live joyful

fulfilling lives.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Seaman Hakeem Fleming, a ship’s serviceman from Moreno Valley, Calif. and graduate of Rancho Verde High School, is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard Pre-Commissioning Unit Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). Gerald R. Ford is the first ship in its class and the successor to the Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carriers that have been in operation for the last half century. Gerald R. Ford’s 1000-sailor crew is slowly bringing the ship to life, a crew that will eventually grow to more than 4,500 when the ship is at sea.

When complete, the aircraft carrier, powered by two nuclear reactors, will measure more

than three football fields long at 1,092 feet in length and will weigh more than 100,000 tons.

It will be capable of sailing at nearly 35 mph and will carry more than 75 Navy aircraft.

Like the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers that came before it, USS Gerald R. Ford’s mission is to protect and defend America on the world’s oceans.

When the ship deploys it will bring four-and-a-half acres of survivable, sovereign U.S. territory increasing the Navy’s strike capability and defending the country’s interests in any region of the world. The ship is scheduled to commission in spring 2016.
