“California Inferno” Thousands evacuated as Northern California blaze triples in size in 24 hours, destroys dozens of homes By Desert Star Staff Thousands are evacuating from Northern California as the Caldor Fire has charred nearly 50,000 acres and destroyed
dozens of homes. Officials are warning of conditions creating a “perfect combination” for it to spread further. “The Caldor Fire continued
to experience unprecedented fire behavior and growth due to extremely dry fuels pushed by the southwest winds,” the California Department of
Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said of the El Dorado County blaze. According to the National Weather Service,
fire officials said a “red flag warning” has been extended through tomorrow in their Continues on Page 3
Safety Reminders for Pet Poison Prevention
By Desert Star Staff Did you know more than 200,000 dogs and cats have a pet poison-related emergency each year? That’s enough to give everyone “paws.” But what’s just as alarming is that many of these issues relate to things many people have in and around their homes. In recognition of Poison Prevention Week 2021 – and with many new pet parents who adopted dogs or cats during the pandemic – it’s an excellent time to review potential hazards so you know how to keep your best friend safe. Here are eight potential issues to consider … 1. Beware of
“pandemic poisonings.” Over the past year, many people have ramped up cleaning, using disinfectants and sanitizers more often than they did before. Sadly, accidental pet exposure has also increased. Keep your dog or cat safe by permanently storing cleaning products out of reach and keeping pets away while using them. Be sure to rinse off any items that pets may lick after you clean them. Also, be sure to toss disinfectant wipes only into a secure trash container with a lid. 2. Know your household toxins: As a Continues on Page 3
“Broadband Brigade” Presses for Passage of Infrastructure Bill
By Susanne Potter/PNS SACRAMENTO, Calif. -Groups that want to see highspeed internet extended to all country areas are pressing the U.S. House to pass President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion complex infrastructure bill, which has already passed the Senate.
The proposal includes $65 internet to more rural, lowbillion to expand broadband. income communities of color Stan Santos, regional coordinator for the Communications Workers of America’s “Broadband Brigade,” noted the state of California also is kicking in $6 billion to bring high-speed
over the next three years. “The United States is in such a poor position, competitively speaking, about so many countries in the world about access to high-speed broadband,” Santos observed. The U.S. is 27th for access to high-speed internet, according to allconnect. com. And we rank 14th in the world for the speed of our mobile and broadband internet connections, according to speedtest.net. Santos is watching two cases before the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). One could force service providers to give data on their networks to the agency for planning purposes. The other would force them to stop redlining and extend service to smaller, less-profitable communities.
“It has to be regulated,” Santos argued. “There have to be requirements, and there have to be consequences if they continue to be bad actors, especially with public funds.” People can check the broadband maps on the CPUC and the Federal Communications Commission websites to see which communities are burdened with slow internet and prioritized during the buildout. As Fires Rage Outside, Indoor Air Risks Could Also Be Lurking
By Eric Tegethoff/PNS Wildfire smoke is a hazard to many Washingtonians right now, but health experts say some might not get the relief they need inside their homes. Dr. Mark Vossler, president of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, said gas stoves can also present hazards to our health. “We think that we can escape bad outdoor air quality by going indoors, but of course, if we’re burning fossil fuels in the home, we’re also creating bad indoor air quality,” Vossler contended. The potential combination of bad air quality indoors and outdoors comes as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on. A recently released study found last year’s wildfires caused more cases and deaths from the virus. In addition, tiny particles, such as harmful heavy metals in the smoke, make people more susceptible to respiratory disease. Vossler pointed out you can also find a harmful particulate matter that lodges itself deep in the lungs after cooking a meal on a gas stove. He noted indoor air from these gases would be deemed unhealthy

if measured outside. “But we do not measure indoor air quality,” Vossler observed. “You’re not getting reports on your weather reports like you to do when there are smoky skies, but it is dangerous.” Vossler added there is an established link between the concentration of particulates in the air and mortality. Research shows children who live in a home with a gas stove have a 40% increased risk of asthma symptoms. Vossler stressed he is encouraged by the Evergreen State’s goals for reducing carbon emissions and moving toward renewables, including local efforts in the state to reduce the use of natural gas in buildings. Still, he believes it’s a different story at the federal level. “Washington, the state, is moving in the right direction,” Vossler asserted. “Where we’re failing dramatically is Washington, D.C., where the federal government hasn’t done anything significant at all to mitigate climate change.” Vossler suggested Congress could take a step in the right direction by passing the infrastructure and budget bills containing climate action measures.

latest update on fighting the fire. Red flag warnings are issued “for weather events which may result in extreme fire behavior that will occur within 24 hours.” Dry conditions and wind have created a “perfect combination” for the fire to spread, Chief Daniel Berlant told reporters on Wednesday. A satellite video
posted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows the rapid growth of the fire. Fire officials said the fire grew 47,200 acres in just 24 hours. Governor Gavin Newsom previously declared an emergency in El Dorado County in response to the growing flames. Evacuation orders for numerous areas like Grizzly Flat, Perry Creek
at the door. There are a variety of garage and garden items to watch out for, too. For example, de-icing salt, antifreeze, pest control, insect repellents, fertilizers, cocoa bean mulches, mushrooms and many garden plants can be harmful to pets. So keep a close eye on dogs and cats when they’re outdoors and check this article from BLUEPEARL™ Veterinary Hospital for more tips. What to do in an emergency If you think your pet may have eaten or come in contact with something dangerous, first separate your pet from the hazard so they can’t ingest more. Then,
contact your veterinarian, emergency pet hospital or animal poison hotline. Be ready with information about what you think your pet ate, when it happened and what symptoms your pet is showing. Don’t try a home remedy or induce vomiting – either can be more dangerous than helpful, depending on the toxin. Get advice even if your pet seems to be acting and feeling normal since some hazards can cause symptoms over time. Talking with your vet is always the best step when you concern about your cat or dog. Source: “Better Cities for Pets”
and Hawk Haven have been issued as the fire has spread and destroyed property, including dozens of homes, an elementary school, a post office, and multiple other buildings, according to officials. At least two people have been injured, both having to be airlifted to hospitals. Thousands have already been evacuated, according to a Wednesday update from state emergency services.
The fire began on Saturday, but the origins remain unknown. Many have been taking to social media to post the fire’s destruction in areas and the conditions in highly affected areas, such as Mormon Emigrant Trail. The fire has led to the emergency closure of the El Dorado National Forest through the end of September.
Latest Feat for ‘Shotime’
By Desert Star Staff One of the rarest, most remarkable players in MLB history just reached another milestone in an already historic season — and it’s only August. On Wednesday, Shohei Ohtani became the first to reach the 40-home run mark in 2021 — all while starting for the Angels and allowing one run over
eight innings to improve to 8-1 with a 2.79 ERA. What Ohtani is doing is more than remarkable — it’s unprecedented. • His 40 homers are the most by anyone who also pitched in at least 15 games— the previous record-holder: Babe Ruth’s 29 in 1919. • Ohtani is first in MLB in SLG (.648) and HR-per-fly ball ratio (36.7%; the nextAugust 20, 2021
closest is 28.9%), second in OPS (1.011), and second in offensive WAR (40.1). • Despite slowing down a bit since the All-Star break, he’s still on pace to reach 53 homers if he plays all 40 remaining games — which would top Troy Glaus’ club-leading mark (47). For now, Ohtani remains one of the most incredible bargains in sports. He’s
earning $3 million in 2021, then getting a bump to $5.5 million in 2022. He’ll be arbitration-eligible in 2023 and is scheduled to become a free agent before the 2024 season — when he’ll only be 29. In March 2019, the Angels gave Trout (then 27 and 2 MVPs) the largest contract in MLB history (12 years/$426.5M).

Over 90 rights groups challenge Apple’s new ‘child-safety features

It notes that this could result in alerts that “threaten young people’s safety and wellbeing” with abusive parents. “iMessages will no longer provide confidentiality and privacy to those users through an end-to-end encrypted messaging system in which only the sender and intended recipients have access to the information sent,” the groups warned. Besides, several
overseas groups have added their concerns about the policy’s impact on countries with different legal systems. An Apple spokesman told Reuters the company had addressed privacy and security concerns earlier. Last week, it released a document detailing why the scanning software’s complex architecture allowed it to resist attempts at abusing it. Earlier this month, a separate letter posted on GitHub and signed by privacy and security experts, including former NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, condemned the “privacy-invasive content scanning technology.” It also warned that the policy “threatens to undermine fundamental privacy protections” for users under the guise of child protection. Other concerns have been raised about the possibility of “false positives” in the hashscanning feature, which looks for an image’s ‘hash’ – a string of letters and numbers that
are unique to the picture – and matches it to databases provided by child protection agencies like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Although a recent Apple FAQ claimed the likelihood of a false positive “less than one in one trillion [incorrectly flagged accounts] per year,” researchers reported the first case of “hash collision” – where the feature identified two completely different images as producing the same hash – this week. According to TechCrunch, “hash collisions” are a “death knell” for systems relying on encryption. However, the tech news outlet said Apple downplayed the concerns in a press call and argued that it had protections in place – including human moderators reviewing flagged incidents before they are reported to law enforcement – to protect against the false positive issue.
Disney Buys NHL’s Stake of Streaming Service Company By Desert Star Staff The NHL is selling its 10% stake in Disney Streaming Services, providing a sorely needed cash influx of $350 million. The league exercised an option in its contract with Disney to trigger a sale on Aug. 3. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year. The streaming technology company, created by MLB as “BAMTech,” has become the backbone of Disney’s rapidly growing streaming
empire, including Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu. MLB, which owns a 15% stake, may exercise a similar option in September 2022. Disney said that the minimum price for MLB’s stake is currently $752 million. MLB established BAMTech in 2015, with the NHL as a minority investor, to be the technology company behind MLB.tv and NHL.tv. Disney bought a 33% stake in 2016, which increased to 75% in 2017 for $1.58 billion.
ESPN+ launched in 2018, and Disney+ launched the following year. As a result, the subscriber base of the two services grew by 75% and 100% year-over-year, respectively, in the fiscal quarter ending July 3. The NHL lost an estimated $3.6 billion in revenue last season due to limited game attendance. Commissioner Gary Bettman said in January that the league would save money if it canceled its games.
Advocates Press for New Cell-Phone Radiation Limits After Court Victory
By Suzanne Potter/PNS Wireless safety advocates are calling on the Biden administration to develop a policy on safer cell-phone technology in the wake of a new ruling in federal court. On Friday, a panel of judges in the D.C. Circuit ordered the Federal Communications Commission to justify its 2019 decision to stick with 25-year-old safety rules for radiofrequency radiation from wireless devices and cell-phone towers. The court ruled that the agency failed to properly consider the evidence on record before it upheld the standards. Devra Davis, PhD, is director of the Environmental Health Trust, one of the plaintiffs in the suit. “The record was thousands of pages of peer-reviewed evidence in addition to testimony from individuals who reported on their personal harm

The court, however, agreed with the FCC and found that the study could not be extrapolated to humans. The court also took no position on the safety of RF radiation. The wireless industry says its products are safe. Joel Moskowitz, PhD and director of the Center for Family and Community Health at UC Berkeley, noted that 240 scientists have signed a petition, called the International EMF Scientist Appeal, that said government agencies have failed to impose sufficient guidelines

Evacuations on Capitol Hill after the driver claimed to have Explosives in truck By Desert Star Staff The police chief said that US Capitol Police evacuated an area around the Library of Congress on Capitol Hill after a driver pulled up outside and claimed to have a bomb in his pickup truck. He has since surrendered to officers. On Thursday, a security alert was raised on Capitol Hill, Washington. The staff was told to evacuate buildings, and reports emerged that police were investigating a possible explosive device in a pickup truck. In a tweet, US Capitol Police said they were “responding to a suspicious vehicle near the Library of Congress” and urged people to stay away from the area. Police chief Tom Manger told reporters close to the scene that at 9:15 a.m. local time, a man in a black pickup truck drove right up to the Library of Congress building and claimed to have an explosive device in the vehicle before displaying what appeared to be a detonator. Negotiations
were conducted with the driver to find a “peaceful resolution,” Manger said. “We don’t know what his motives are at this time,” the police chief added. Footage filmed at the scene later showed the suspect emerge from the vehicle with his hands above his head and surrender to police. Earlier, an unverified image taken outside the Library of Congress appeared to show the driver still in the vehicle, with dollar bills strewn on the ground outside the truck. The suspect also allegedly posted a now-deleted Livestream filmed while sitting behind the driving seat inside the parked vehicle. He addressed US President Joe Biden and claimed to have several bombs. Part of the footage appeared to show what looked to be a gas tank, plastic explosives and several large tubs of loose change in the truck. He said the alleged explosives in the car were rigged to only be detonated
by a loud enough noise, such as the truck’s windshield being shattered by gunshots. The man also alleged four other explosive devices in undisclosed locations, claiming that others had transported them separately. Facebook subsequently locked the account of a user called Ray Roseberry after
the 30-minute Livestream. Staff in The Cannon House Office Building were among those told to evacuate earlier Thursday. An order, shared online by Forbes reporter Andrew Solender, directed staff to relocate to Longworth House Office Building using underground tunnels. Footage shared online
showed scores of law enforcement vehicles, including specialized Emergency Response Team trucks, heading into the restricted area. In TV footage, police were seen cordoning off the area, with barriers raised to restrict access.

Caring for Your Cat for a Lifetime By Desert Star Staff Like humans need to see the doctor, cats need to see the veterinarian at least yearly, though some need to be seen more frequently. Even so, more than 50% of cats don’t receive veterinary care regularly, according to the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Cats are stoic animals, so it can be difficult to tell when they’re not feeling well, which is why Royal Canin created the “Take Your Cat to the Vet” campaign to spread awareness about the importance of preventative feline veterinary care. While each annual appointment may look similar, your veterinarian monitors for different health concerns, such as kidney disease, depending on your cat’s life stage. During a typical physical examination, your vet assesses vital signs, including temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate, as well as your cat’s teeth and mouth, as tartar builds up and periodontal disease is common as cats age. Other areas your vet will check include ears and eyes, lymph nodes, skin and coat, weight, muscles, bones and joints. As your cat ages, your vet will focus on specific developmental and health considerations. Kittens (3 months-1 years): This is a highly active stage of life, and you can expect
curiosity and playfulness. It’s the time to socialize and bond with your cat, as well as get them accustomed to regular health practices like trimming nails and getting in the carrier. In addition, your vet will monitor growth and development, offer advice to ensure your kitten is getting adequate nutrition and educate you about breedspecific conditions or genetic concerns along with disease prevention and options for spaying and neutering. Young Adults (1-6 years): At this stage, you should be familiar with your cat’s normal behaviors and able to spot changes. Let your veterinarian know about any unusual signs like vomiting, excessive hairballs or other conduct or grooming changes. Nutrition and weight management are increasingly important during this stage since preventing or managing obesity can help keep your cat healthier in its later years. Your vet will give extra attention to vital organs like the heart and lungs, as well as the skin and teeth. Mature Adults (7-10 years): Many cats still look youthful and remain playful at seven years and older. However, there is an increased risk of age-related problems like diabetes, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and cancer. Watch for common signs of illness in older cats such as poor coat condition, lethargy, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, change in appetite
Photo courtesy of Getty Images or reduced activity. During your annual checkup, your vet will likely pay extra attention to the abdomen, thyroid and kidneys, as well as assessing your cat’s muscle tone, bone structure and signs of arthritis or other pain. Seniors (10 years and older): Cats need careful attention as they age, as many health problems can emerge simultaneously. If you notice signs or changes, avoid
chalking them up to age and consult your veterinarian. One common concern for senior cats is chronic kidney disease, which affects 3040% of cats over the age of 10, according to research published in the Compendium on Continuing Education for the Practicing Veterinarian. Kidneys regulate the average balance of fluid and minerals within your pet’s body and remove
waste substances from the blood. Look for warning signs of kidney disease like increased thirst and urination, poor appetite, weight loss, vomiting and poor hair or coat quality.
