‘Amazon on Fire!’ Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest is Burning at a Record Rate, Research Center Says NBC PS News Staff Fires are raging at a record rate in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, and scientists warn that it could strike a devastating blow to the fight against climate change. The fires are burning at the highest rate since the country’s space research
center, the National Institute for Space Research (known by the abbreviation INPE), began tracking them in 2013, the center said Tuesday. There have been 72,843 fires in Brazil this year, with more than half in the Amazon region, INPE said. That’s more than an 80%
By Jackie Devereaux and Susan von Seggren (29 Palms, California) – Bhakti Fest is bringing back the spiritual dimension started 50 years ago this summer when Woodstock promoters Michael Lang and Artie Kornfeld sought producer Sridhar Silberfein’s advice on the soon-to-be legendary art and music festival they were producing in upstate New York. Sridhar said to them, “Ya got some of the greatest musical acts in the world but what’s missing is the spiritual component.” With their to-do lists already bursting, they answered, “Ok, you deal with that part.”
As can be seen in the documentary film about the event, Woodstock, on August 18, 1969, Sri asked singer/songwriter Richie Havens to introduce Swami Satchidananda. Still reeling from his legendary set, Richie gave him a “that would be a no” look. So, Sri escorted Swami Satchidananda and his entourage onto the Woodstock stage to deliver an invocation. More than half a million American youth were in attendance – the largest peaceful gathering in the West at the time. Swami Satchidananda introduced

species of fauna and flora. Roughly half the size of the United States, it is the largest rainforest on the planet. Dramatic images and videos on social media show giant plumes of smoke rising from the greenery and lines of fire leaving blackened waste in their wake.
The smoke has reached all the way to Sao Paulo, more than 1,700 miles away. Images from the city show the sky pitch-black in the middle of the afternoon, the sun blanketed by smoke and ash. $50 million in local disaster resilience grants and announced
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and California Volunteers today released the grantees awarded $50 million in local disaster resilience grants and announced the official launch of the state’s new emergency preparedness campaign, known as Listos (Ready) California, to build resiliency in vulnerable communities at high risk for wildfires and other disasters. Climate change has created a new wildfire reality in California, and socially vulnerable communities are disproportionally impacted by devastating wildfires, earthquakes, and other disasters. Listos California is a new effort to boost
disaster preparedness by engaging a statewide network of communitybased organizations. CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams), Listos, AmeriCorps NCCC, veterinary organizations, Fire Safe Councils, and management teams to ensure the state’s most vulnerable are ready when disaster strikes. “Emergency preparedness is not the government’s responsibility alone. Solutions can’t be top-down – they have to come from the bottom-up,” said Governor Newsom. “We need more focus on building resiliency within California’s most vulnerable communities for the destructive and deadly wildfires ahead. We’re empowering nonprofit organizations and emergency responders to

In May 2019, during California For All CERT and Listos Preparedness Conference in San Diego, all of the volunteer teams associated with this effort were officially activated to build and expand their local-level efforts around preparedness. Karen Baker, 57, of Sacramento, served as California’s Chief Service Officer from 2012 to 2019. Baker was first appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger and became the country’s first Secretary of Service and Volunteering in 2008. Baker was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the national team that created AmeriCorps, was the Director of Innovation for Share Our Strength and was Executive Director of Chrysalis, a homeless agency in Los Angeles. By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that he has signed a tribal-state gaming compact between the State of California and the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians. The new compact reflects the Governor’s and the
Tribe’s mutual commitment to a strong and respectful government-to-government relationship and to promoting tribal economic development and self-sufficiency, and strong tribal government. The terms respect the parties’ interest in improving the quality of life of tribal members though
a framework that generates revenue for governmental programs, while also fairly regulating the gaming activities; affording meaningful consumer and employee protections; and mitigating the off-reservation impacts of the gaming facility. The compact affirms the Tribe’s commitment to
their local community and is intended to enable the tribal government to invest in local jurisdictions, non-profits and civic organizations for improved fire and emergency medical services, law enforcement, public transit, education, environmental protection and tourism, as well as other
services and infrastructure improvements. The compact reflects continued commitment by the Tribe to revenue sharing with non-gaming and limited gaming tribes so that the economic benefits of gaming reach tribal governments that have not chosen to operate a tribal casino.
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Migrant children and their families could be held in camps almost indefinitely while their request for asylum plays out in court – the result of a new final rule announced by the Trump administration on Wednesday. The rule weakens the decades-old Flores court settlement that said the federal government can only hold children for 20 days. Karina Martinez, communications director for the group Mi Familia Vota, says the president is causing migrant children to suffer in order to appeal to his anti-immigrant base. “We should be a
leader in protecting vulnerable populations, not manipulating odds against them,” she states. The new rule does codify some basic standards on conditions in immigration holding facilities. The administration says the changes are needed to reduce the number of migrants released while they wait for a court date and maintains this will deter more families from seeking asylum. Federal immigration agents report encountering 475,000 families at the border in the past 10 months, three times the year before. The Trump administration first proposed the new rule last fall as it had to
retreat from a policy of separating children from their parents at the border. Martinez says President Donald Trump’s antiimmigrant policies embolden people whose racism then turns to violence. “We’re seeing the complete dehumanization of migrant populations, and that leads to violence when people are treated as subhuman,” she states. “We saw the results in Gilroy. We saw the results in El Paso.” The rule will be published in the Federal Register on Friday and is supposed to take effect 60 days after that. Immigration rights groups have pledged to challenge the rule in court.

The Amazon River stretches across several of these South American countries, but the majority — more than two-thirds — of the rainforest lies in Brazil. According to INPE, more than 1½ soccer fields of Amazon rainforest are being destroyed every minute of every day. People worldwide are sharing their horror on social media. Fans of the K-Pop band BTS, who call themselves the Army, are even rallying on Twitter to spread word of the fires, with tens of thousands of people tweeting the hashtag #ArmyHelpThePlanet. Activists blame Brazil’s president Environmental groups have long been campaigning to save the Amazon, blaming Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, for the endangerment of the vital rainforest. They accuse him of relaxing environmental controls in the country and encouraging deforestation. Bolsonaro’s environmental policies have been controversial from the start. Environmental activists and organizations like the World Wildlife Fund warn that if the Amazon reaches a point of no return, the rainforest could become a dry savannah, no longer habitable for much of its wildlife. If this happens, instead of being a source of oxygen, it could start emitting carbon — the major driver of climate change. Source: NBC Palm Springs

Dining Out for Life Greater Palm Springs 2019 Raises $307,000
By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA -Eightythree local restaurants, bars, bakeries, and coffee shops participated in Dining Out for Life on April 25 donating 33% or more of their food, beverage, and liquor gross sales to support Desert AIDS Project. Setting a record this year, fifteen participants gave 50% or more. The local event, which raised $307,000, was part of the larger Dining Out for Life program which occurs on the last Thursday of April each year. In 2019, there were 49 Dining Out For Life events throughout North America. Two thousand four hundred fiftynine restaurants participated, and with the support of 4,000 volunteers and 400,000 diners, more than $4 million was raised to support local H.I.V. services. Harold Matzner donated 100% of Spencer’s gross revenue in honor of his friend, Barbara Keller who championed the mission of D.A.P. and for whom D.A.P.’s main building will be renamed ‘The Barbara Keller LOVE Building’. Matzner’s restaurant was the top fundraising location in North America for the second year in a row joined by Lulu California Bistro and Trio Restaurant as the prime three fundraising locations. Jointly, the three areas raised over $74,000. Locally, the event generates great community pride of place. Greater Palm Springs raised more funds than cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, and San Francisco. “This is a powerful story about the impact of generous restaurants and our local community.” Said Desert AIDS Project’s Chief Development Officer, Darrel Tucci who credits the generosity of Great Palm Springs business owners for raising a record amount this year for client services at Desert AIDS Project (D.A.P.). “Palm Springs is the smallest participating market, but because of their commitment to D.A.P., we were second in overall fundraising again this year. No other market can boast the level of commitment shown in Greater Palm Springs.” Beyond fundraising to support D.A.P.’s clients and services, the event generates community awareness of HIV/ AIDS and supports Desert AIDS Project’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of its community. Desert AIDS Project provides compassionate care for 6,500 patients and clients. Desert AIDS Project’s goal and specialty is helping people achieve overall health. D.A.P. is in the midst of a capital campaign, D.A.P. Vision 2020, which, when fully funded, will enable it to double the number of patients and clients served. Desert AIDS Project C.E.O., David Brinkman explains why

the expansion is so essential. “There are 27,000 transgender individuals in our service area that need culturally competent care. Forty thousand lowincome residents near D.A.P. are still without healthcare, and our neighbors facing a mental health crisis often wait weeks or months for an appointment. Treatment for addiction is often out of reach, and affordable housing is almost non-existent in Palm Springs. The future of D.A.P. is humanitarian, moving individuals into care, and onward toward a life of wellness. Brinkman reflected on the impact of Dining Out for Life Greater Palm Springs. “Few other events bring D.A.P. closer to our taproot of community action. D.A.P. was founded on unconditional love and guided by community members who
defined and funded solutions to help those in need. I hope the community shares our great sense of pride in being home to the top three fundraising restaurants in North America for the third year in a row.” Over
10,000 residents ‘made one meal matter’ at participating locations throughout the day sporting their ‘I Dined’ badges of honor. Sponsors of Dining Out for Life Greater Palm Springs included Sysco

Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ --A Superhero Finale A little over a year ago “Avengers: Infinity War” grossed $2.048 billion at the worldwide box office. That made it one of the biggest grossing films of all time. While that sounds truly impressive the latest Avengers epic “Avengers: Endgame” has surpassed that total by raking in $2.8 billion already, making it the highest-grossing film of all time. Wow! That’s impressive. But guess what! The latest Avengers epic may break up the old gang, spelling the end for some of the most beloved characters in the Disney/Marvel franchise. Who will bite the dust won’t be revealed here. You have to find that out for yourself. If you missed this compelling superhero movie in theaters-don’t worry. It is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. “Endgame” picks up where “Infinity Wars” left off. Thanks to the supervillain Thanos (Josh Brolin) the world’s population has been drastically reduced. He was aided in his catastrophic destruction
efforts by taking control of six “Infinity Stones.” As the film begins, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) enters the scene, determined to destroy Thanos and gain control of these powerful stones. But Iron Man (Robert Downey) takes on the daunting task with the aid of Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth). However at this time, due to the Avengers terrible defeat earlier, Thor has literally gone to pot. Now he is fat and out of shape, with a beer belly that has destroyed his sexy brawny good looks. It takes some convincing to get him off the sauce and back into being a superhero Avenger once more. Christopher Marcus and Stephen McFeely wrote the script for this three hour Marvel marathon directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. As the story progresses, some of the main characters may meet their untimely end in the marathon battle that ensues when the forces of good and evil are pitted against one another. Avengers like Black
Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Ant-Mann (Paul Rudd) join in the chaotic struggle to save the universe. Avenger fans will be mesmerized by the horrific battle that takes place between the forces of good and evil. At one point during the carnage, Iron Man asks Dr. Strange who will win. His answer is, “You will have to
wait and see.” And so will you. While the climactic battle is overpowering and ends in the death of one special character, it still leaves plenty of Avengers alive for more Marvel film adventures. On the lighter side, we get to meet Iron Man’s little daughter. Yes, this time he is happily married to Gweneth Paltrow. The film features an allstar cast that includes Don
Cheadle, Bradley Cooper as the feisty raccoon, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Jon Favreau, Tilda Swinton. Chris Evans and Robert Redford. “Avengers: Endgame,” rated PG-13, has a running time of 3 hours, 1 minute. And if you missed it on screen, don’t worry. The Avengers ultimate story has returned.

Governor Gavin Newsom Signs Use-of-force Bill
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 392 by Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego). The bill enacts one of the strongest use-of-force laws in the country. AB 392 modernizes standards for the use of deadly force by officers. Correctly, this bill updates the existing deadly force standards to provide that deadly force may only be used when necessary. AB 392 also requires officers to use other techniques to address threats instead of using deadly force when safe to do so, encouraging law enforcement to train on and use deescalation techniques like verbal persuasion and other crisis intervention methods. “This is a time for healing, progress, and looking www.desertstarweekly.com
forward. The bill goes to the heart of some of our most sacred principles, in which force should be exercised judiciously, with respect for human life and dignity. The bottom line is that deadly force should only be used when absolutely necessary,” said Governor Newsom. “With the Governor’s signature, we are closer to a culture of policing in California that values and preserves human life,” said Assemblymember Weber. “Working on this policy has been a high hill to climb, but what has lifted me up is the energy and the devotion of the families who have lost loved ones to these shootings. Our hope all along has been to save lives and to establish trust between law enforcement and communities of color finally.” The provisions in AB 392
will be reflected in both law enforcement agency policy and officer training statewide, and will further ensure that
all officers in California are trained to a higher legal standard. Use-of-force policies have remained mostly

Despite Trump’s Restrictions, Abortion Rights Protected in MD
By Desert Star Staff BALTIMORE – Planned Parenthood’s decision to withdraw from a federal health funding program this week will not disrupt services for Marylanders who use the organization for family planning and health care. The reproductive health group left the program on Monday after the Trump administration’s Title X abortion clinic referral restriction went into effect last week. Karen Nelson, president of Planned Parenthood of Maryland, says the state has passed laws that provide its own money for patients who need to rely on supplemental funding at clinics. “Planned Parenthood believes, and the majority of Americans believe, that discussions in an exam room should be between the health
care provider and the patient and that the government and funders should not be involved in that,” Nelson states. Abortion opponents say Title X has been used to indirectly subsidize Planned Parenthood, the leading abortion provider in the United States. In 2017, Maryland was the first state in the nation to pass legislation to counter the Trump administration’s attempts to restrict abortion and defund Planned Parenthood. The law provides supplemental funding if a family planning clinic is defunded. Nelson says that law was strengthened this year when lawmakers agreed to reject Title X funding altogether if clinics can’t make abortion referrals, and

according to 2015 data from the Guttmacher Institute. Nelson says approximately 25,000 patients who use the state’s Planned Parenthood clinics receive reproductive health services on a sliding scale through Title X.

A Colorado mule deer is blocked by range fencing. A new state program is designed to have state agencies coordinate with federal and local governments and others to keep clear and preserve the state’s migration corridors. (AdobeStock) By Desert Star Staff IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. – Increased development in Colorado is creating major obstacles to migration corridors for several native animal species, but a new state program aims to keep them open. Gov. Jared Polis recently issued an executive order to preserve Colorado’s historic migration corridors, requiring state agencies to coordinate with federal,

400th Anniversary of Birth of U.S. Slavery to be Commemorated in VA By Desert Star Staff HAMPTON, Va. – Events marking the 400th anniversary of the birth of slavery in the United States will take place in Hampton this weekend. On August 23, 1619, the first ship bearing enslaved Africans arrived at Point Comfort, now Fort Monroe, in Virginia. Many consider the moment a dark part of history that’s shaped this country forever.

DesertSTAR
Kathy Spangler, executive director of the First African Landing Commemorative Weekend says the events are designed to help us confront the role slavery has had in our country. “We forged a great democracy and we also forged a scourge on the earth in slavery,” says Spangler. “And to be able to be open about that and have a conversation around
it and not be separated by it is what we hope for this event and the ongoing conversation it will forge.” Ceremonies honoring African-Americans who lost their lives to slavery will kick off Friday morning at Fort Monroe. All activities are free and open to the public. The commemoration will include exhibits, heritage tours, keynote speakers and musical performances. August 23, 2019
Exhibits will document the voyage of the first enslaved Africans, who came across the Atlantic from Angola on a Spanish slave ship. Spangler says storytelling will be a key feature of the weekend. “The stains of slavery cannot be blotted out,” says Spangler. “And we must understand and tell the full authentic, allowing people to tell and share the stories of
their ancestors, the challenges that they faced, and the endurance and contributions that they’ve made.” Saturday morning will feature speeches by CNN’s Van Jones and Virginia’s Democratic U.S. Senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. The events will end on Sunday with a Day of Healing and a gospel music festival.
