The Arena Spectacular returns to Southern California, shows at the Honda Center in Anaheim and Staples Center in Los Angeles By Desert Star Staff Dinosaurs once again roam the earth when the sensational production, Walking With Dinosaurs The Arena Spectacular, based on the award-winning BBC Television Series, returns to North America. The critics have called this show ‘awesome,’ ‘spectacular’ and ‘breathtaking. This updated
production will showcase changes to the dinosaurs based on the latest scientific research, including the likely feathering of some species. Worldwide, more than eight million people have seen this show in 243 cities and over 2,000 performances. A new generation is ready to experience these life–size beasts in this awe-inspiring spectacle,
which has still not been matched in terms of scale and quality. Many of the creatures have “evolved” since the last tour, now featuring distinctive display feathers, head crests and tail fans, reflecting recent discoveries about the physical nature of these massive creatures. This show remains a must-see for audiences of all ages.”
CV Link Approved!
For The Largest Award In State By The California Transportation Commission
By Desert Star Staff San Jose, CA.– The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) is proud to announce that CV Link, a 50-mile pedestrian, bicycle and low-speed electric vehicle transportation corridor along the Whitewater River, was approved today to receive $10.9 million in Active Transportation Program (ATP) funding by the California Transportation Commission. Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit and CVAG Chairwoman & Palm Desert City Council Member Jan Harnik attended the
commission meeting and spoke to the many benefits CV Link will bring to the region. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) received 771 project applications requesting over $1 billion in ATP funds. CV Link is recommended to receive the largest award out of the 126 projects funded with $183 million in available funds throughout the State. C VA G C h a i r w o m a n Jan Harnik commented, “It’s absolutely thrilling that our CV Link project has received such significant funding and support
from the Commission. This is further proof that CV Link is going to be a real ‘game changer’ for our Coachella Valley.” The California Transportation Commission cited CV Link’s significant impacts in safety, emissions, connectivity and public health as the main reasons behind their strong support of the project. “CV Link will position the region as the leader in green transportation infrastructure and will also drive tremendous Continues on Page 2
The show depicts the dinosaurs’ evolution with almost cinematic realism, has scenes of the interactions between dinosaurs, how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how the herbivores fended off their more agile predators. Ten species are represented from the entire 200 million-year
reign of the dinosaurs. The show includes the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the terror of the ancient terrain, as well as the Plateosaurus and Liliensternus from the Triassic period, the Stegosaurus and Allosaurus from the Jurassic period and Torosaurus and Continues on Page 2
Arena Spectacular ‘Walking With Dinosaurs’ Returns Continued from Page 1 Utahraptor from the awesome Cretaceous period. The largest of them, the Brachiosaurus is 36 feet tall, and 56 feet from nose to tail. It took a team of 50 – including engineers, fabricators, skin makers, artists and painters, and animatronics experts – a year to build the production. The history of the world is played out with the splitting of the earth’s continents, and the transition from the arid desert of the Triassic period is given over to the lush green prairies and forces of the later Jurassic. Oceans form; volcanoes erupt; a forest catches fire — all leading to the impact of the massive comet, which struck the earth, and forced the extinction of the dinosaurs. Walking With Dinosaurs The Arena Spectacular has been seen on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Live with Regis and Kelly, and have been written about in Newsweek, The New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor and The Wall Street Journal. It was the subject of a Discovery Channel Really Big Things episode and a video clue
category on Jeopardy. Designer Sonny Tilders said, “Many of the technologies we are using on Walking With Dinosaurs are borrowed from film. The computer software and hardware we have developed are based on the systems used to control animatronics creatures in feature films.” “To make it appear that these creatures are flesh and blood weighing six, eight or even 20 tons, we use a system called ‘muscle bags,’ made from stretch mesh fabric and filled with polystyrene balls, stretched across moving points on the body. These contracts and stretch in the same manner that muscle, fat, and skin do on real creatures.” “The puppeteers use ‘voodoo rigs to make many of the dinosaurs move. They are miniature versions of the dinosaurs with the same joints and range of movement as their lives-sized counterparts. The puppeteer manipulates the voodoo rig, and these actions are interpreted by computer and transmitted by radio waves to make the hydraulic cylinders in the actual dinosaur
replicate the action, with a driver hidden below the animal, helping to maneuver it around the arena.” Suited puppeteer specialists, who are inside the creatures, operate five of the smaller dinosaurs. Sonny Tildes’ triumphant creature design ensures ‘Walking With Dinosaurs is a truly spectacular. It is everything a dino-Phil could want.” WALKING WITH DINOSAURS THE ARENA SPECTACULAR will be performed at Honda Center from a limited eightperformance engagement from Wednesday, September 3 to Sunday, September 7 and STAPLES Center for a limited eight-performance engagement from Thursday, September 11 to Sunday, September 15. Napa Valley Earthquake Reminds Valley Residents to Prepare By Corban Baker PALM DESERT -- The earthquake in the Napa Valley area is just one more reminder to always be prepared for a disaster. Battalion Chief Rick Griggs of the the Riverside County Fire Department says his main advice to Californians is to have a plan. “The big one could happen out here at any time. It’s been forecasted for years,” said Chief Griggs. Chief Griggs of the R i v e r s i d e C o u n t y F i re Department says that information and readiness are
the keys to surviving natural disasters and, especially for Californians, earthquakes. “Have a plan in place. That plan includes knowing what to do in case the earthquake does happen. Part of the plan also involves communicating with family, set a meeting point for family. Have a kit... That kit needs to support you for at least seventy-two hours and potentially longer than that because for us to get assistance to you or supplies could take up to that long,” said Griggs. Emergency kits should include non-perishable food
items, plenty of water, flash lights, batteries, warm clothes, medications if need be and possibly ways to filter water. “Another thing you can do with your kits and make sure they’re updated. Set a time date that you co through and check everything and make sure nothing is expired, nothing’s gone bad and nothing’s gotten in to that kit,” said Griggs. It is also important to be aware of what to do as the earthquake is happening. The old rule of getting to a door way is no longer the case. “Doors tend to slam and
they’re not always the most safe place in the house. what you need to do is find a nice big sturdy piece of furniture. A table, a desk... something like that... Get underneath, duck, cover and hold. That means get down on all fours, duck down, get your hands behind your head and kind of cover up to protect your head as much as you can. Keep your eyes closed and hang on until the shaking stops,” said Griggs. Some residents we spoke with say while the threat of an earthquake can be a bit unnerving, it comes with the territory of living in California. “It kind of makes me nervous a little bit but you have to live with it I guess.” “Yeah, every kind of area has their own, like, natural disaster
so I’d prefer earthquakes over tornados or hurricanes any day,” said Indio residents, Julissa and Alondra Alonso. Yucca Valley resident, Chantelle Autry, barely survived an earthquake in 1992 and says she keeps supplies on her at all times. “Typically in our trunk we keep a plastic tupperware case full of safety supplies, water, canned goods, can opener, fire starter... your basic necessities,” said Autry. Chantelle echoes Chief Griggs’ advice and says to always be ready. “Just stay safe, get your safety equipment together and make sure you’re ready for anything,” said Autry. If I Knew, Then What I Know Now…... We were discussing how when we first started working, we really did not have a plan. We were just glad to have a job, much less, think about how important it was to start early and save for retirement. The one point that I have always pointed out to those starting a business is to pay yourself first. Many artisans are terrific at making things and honing their craft. When they sell their work or their service, they forget to take into account that the price of the sale should include By Janice Gough the cost of their personal When meeting with some of benefit plans. Those costs are my Chamber members, one of embedded in everything we buy them made this very statement. from others, so why shouldn’t you provide those benefits for yourself. Providing yourself with health, life and disability, along with money contributed to your retirement plan, should be included in costs, before giving to anything toward other expenses. Artisans are more guilty of leaving themselves out, than any other occupation. W E E K L Y Most of the time, their passion
for their work and their passion to give someone a good deal is the reason they leave off the cost of their benefits in their sale price. Unless they are required to provide workers compensation for others, they rarely cover themselves. When work falls off they cannot collect unemployment, they must use their savings. These are, also, the people who face the greatest risk of injury and when the rug is pulled out from under them by an injury or sickness, they have little to fall back on. Since, they, most likely, did not purchase disability insurance; they must use retirement money or savings to get by. Physical labor will wear out your joints, and the loss of physical ability may force one into early retirement. Yes, I have my own list of things that exist in which I would say…”If I knew, then what I know now…... The one lesson that I do know now, more than ever, is that you need to sit down with a planner, one who
can help you calculate the costs of goods or services, and who includes these costs in pricing. A planner will understand the various ways you can access a variety of benefit plans and work them into your budget. An example of this is that many new business people cannot afford disability insurance; however, they could purchase it directly through State D.I., or they could use group plans, such as AFLAC, to provide some short term D.I. protection. A planner can also look at the percentage of sales spent for advertising to make sure it is within reason, or compares your payroll cost with other similar businesses. Another mistake which I learned is that an employee, who is overpaid, will not give two cents about you or your well being once they leave. Instead of praising you for providing them with a job and benefits, they may be the first one to discredit you. A planner will advise you if the salary paid
is commensurate with your budget, and the job required of them. You only hurt yourself by being too nice. An advisor can assist you with insurance agreements, contracts, and they can provide great solutions for succession planning. Many advisors do not charge a fee for plans for which they get paid a commission. The most important thing to learn is that whether you have a business or not, a planner serves as your voice of reason and the result may provide you with benefits in the event of a sickness or accident and money saved by their expertises will help to build more profit and a greater retirement.

Although closed sessions are only for matters which truly need to be confidential, far too many boards, managers and lawyers allow all “contract issues” to be in closed session. So, they interview bidders, review proposals and discuss vendor selection all in secret… unnecessarily. Govern as much as possible in the open, to preserve trust. Thanks for your question, Kelly

Assessments After Bankruptcy, Reviewing Contracts Dear D.W.: Under Civil 5200(a)(4), homeowners can review “executed contracts not privileged under law.” A privileged contract would be extraordinary – I do not consider even attorney fee agreements “privileged” as to members – so all but the most unusual contracts are reviewable by members upon written request. Remember, when you review a contract, you should not intervene if you don’t like something in it – let the manager and board do their job. If you see a problem, let them know and let them handle it. Review, comment, but don’t act. Many lawyers allow discussion of any contract issues in closed session. However, I think that is contrary to the statute and contrary to good association governance. Are Non-Human Aliens Here?: Part Two A UFO Conference In Joshua Tree
By Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension In last week’s issue of this newspaper, we began our report on “Contact In The Desert,” a four-day conference about unidentified flying objects held at the beginning of August 2014 at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center. This conference attracted 2,000 people to its discussions of alien visitations to earth, perhaps twice as many who attended the first Contact conference in 2013. I want to thank Paul Andrews and Victoria Jensen for organizing both Contact events and planning a third one in 2015. The film shown at Contact 2 about cattle mutilations that we reviewed last week strongly suggested that the only plausible reason for these strange mutilations was an alien study of biology on earth with a probable focus on manipulating human DNA. Another compelling discussion at Contact 2 revolved about a document summarizing the briefing of President Ronald Reagan about alien visitations to Earth by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). This alleged briefing took place on March 6 to 8, 1981 and was published after 25 years of being classified as top-secret. Although several writers have challenged the authenticity of this document, we are reproducing significant portions of this briefing here so our readers can judge this interesting document for themselves. The full 19 page briefing is now available on the Internet and considered credible by many sources. The briefing was conducted by CIA Director William Casey and a CIA employee who was the caretaker of above top-secret CIA documents about the aliens. CARETAKER: “The United States of America has been
visited by ExtraTerrestrial visitors since 1947. We have proof of that. However, we also have some proof that Earth has been visited for many thousands of years by various races of ExtraTerrestrial visitors. Mr. President, I’ll just refer to those visits as ETs.” “In July 1947, a remarkable event occurred in New Mexico. During a storm, two ET spacecraft crashed. One crashed southwest of Corona, New Mexico and one crashed near Datil, New Mexico. The U.S. Army eventually found both sites and recovered all of the debris and one live Alien. I’ll refer to this live Alien as ‘EBE 1.’... EBE means ‘Extraterrestrial Biological Entity.’ It was a code designated to this creature by the U.S. Army back in those days...” “PRESIDENT REAGAN: OK, a question regarding the first site. How many aliens were in the spaceship.”The Caretaker: Five (5) dead aliens and one (1) alive. The bodies of the dead aliens were transported to Wright Field in Ohio and kept in a form of deep freeze... There were four (4) dead aliens in the second crash site... They had the same height, weight and physical features...” “PRESIDENT REAGAN: Can we classify them. I mean, can we...well, connect them with anything earthly? “The Caretaker: No, Mr. President. They don’t have any similar characteristics of a human with the exception of their eyes, ears and a mouth....Their blood wasn’t red, and their brain was entirely different from human... Their eyes had two different eyelids. Probably because their home planet was very bright...” “EBE did explain where he lives in the universe. We call this star system Zeta Reticuli, which is about 40 light-years from Earth. EBE’s planet was within this star system...It took the EBE
spaceship nine (9) of our months to travel the 38.42 light years... Their spaceships can travel through a form of ‘space tunnel’ that gets them from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ without having to travel at the speed of light...” “The project was originally established in the early 1950’s, first by President Truman and then by order of President Eisenhower, under control of the National Security Council (NSC).” “The United States felt relatively sure the aliens exploration of Earth was nonaggressive and non-hostile. It was also established that the aliens’ presence does not directly threaten the security of the United States. Secondly, the public was beginning to believe that UFOs were real. The NSC felt this public feeling could lead to a nationwide panic if we disclosed everything we knew about UFO’s and alien visitation...It was felt that public awareness of these projects would have jeopardized the future space program of the United States...” “In the 1976 MJ-12 (Majority 12), it was estimated that the alien’s technology was many thousands of years ahead of ours. Our scientists speculated that until our technology develops to a level equal to the aliens, we cannot understand the large volume of scientific information we have gained from the alien’s spacecraft. This advancement of our technology may take hundreds of years...” PRESIDENT REAGAN: “Can you tell me how many different species have visited us.” The CARETAKER: At least five (5)...Mr. President, the five species are called Ebens, Archoloids, Quadloids, Heplaloids and Trantaloids...The Ebens are friendly, the Trantaloids are the dangerous ones. (See: Http:www. serpo.org/release 23.php). “PRESIDENT: My God, just
knowing we have names for these things are amazing...I want to hear about the hostile ones.” “ADVISER #1. Mr. President, may I step in here. “PRESIDENT: By all means, do” “ADVISER #1: Well, Mr. President, the hostile alien’s species is responsible for abducting some humans. We can clearly prove some 80 Americans were abducted from about 1955 until the present, the last known one in July of last year (1980). We have a special military intelligence unit keeping track of these abductions...” To Be Continued In Next Week’s Desert Star Weekly) ___________________________ Art Kunkin is the 86 year young journalist who published and edited the alternative weekly newspaper The Los Angeles Free Press starting in 1964, later becoming president of the Philosophical Research Society. Save A Pet Location to Become Cat Shelter By Gloria Rodrìguez The former site of the Save A Pet shelter in Desert Hot Springs will become a cat shelter, said Save A Pet Former Executive Director Ann Woods. Save A Pet shut down recently due to zoning issues. Woods said she will head up the new shelter that will be called “Kitty Land.” Woods said Save A Pet had to close because of zoning issues that restricted the number of pets that could be housed there. As a result, about 50 dogs were moved to the Orphan Pet Oasis in Palm Springs--run by the Humane Society of the Desert. She says the dogs are in good hands there. However, the cats stayed at the former Save A Pet location www.desertstarweekly.com

The Humane Society of the Desert and Save A Pet are going to deed the property on 18th Avenue over to Lend A Paw, Woods said, which will operate Kitty Land. National Latino, Immigrant, Launch Voter Outreach Campaigns Mi Familia Vota Mobilizes in California on Saturday In Modesto, Fresno and Coachella Valley By Desert Star Staff FRESNO, CA -- The national march to the polls in 2014 by Latino and immigrant voters begins in Modesto, Fresno, and Coachella Valley on Saturday with community block walks. The weekend canvassing in these three cities follows the official launch of the multi-state voter mobilization campaign held today in Denver, CO, one of the most competitive electoral states in this November’s election. In Denver, groups kicked off of the Colorado Immigration Voter Accountability Project, a campaign designed to mobilize tens of thousands of Latino and Asian American voters in that state this year. Nationally, Latino voter advocacy groups, including Mi Familia Vota, (MFV) expect to register at least 300,000 Latino voters. They also will help bring to the 2014 November Election a total of 7.8 million Latino voters, up from 6.6 million Latino voters in the last mid-term election in 2010, according to projections by the National Association of
Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO). Across the U.S., the message is clear: voters must hold Congress accountable for obstructing immigration reform. The House refused to act and instead advanced the anti-immigrant agenda of nativists in the House. By contrast, a bipartisan immigration reform bill passed the Senate by a solid majority in June, 2013. “We are getting started early,” said Sam Molina, Coordinator of Mi Familia Vota in Fresno. “The Latino vote has and will continue to grow in strength and numbers. There were clearly a group of elected officials that failed our community on immigration reform and the time has come for them to pay the consequences at the ballot box.” Besides MFV, the Latino civic engagement campaign includes Center for Community Change Action, League of United Latin American Citizens, Fair Immigration Reform Movement, National Council of La Raza Action
By KMIR News Staff PALM DESERT, CA— The Board of Trustees of the Desert Community College District (College of the Desert) recognized National Hispanic Heritage Month at its regular board meeting on Friday, August 22. John Zepeda, President of the Associated Students of College of the Desert (ASCOD), read the document which included references to the sophisticated ancestry of Hispanic people dating back hundreds of years,
they’re exploring and settling in this land before the “War of Independence,” and their unwavering belief in the American Dream. The reading also mentioned the importance of family and community in the Hispanic culture and their many valuable contributions to this great land. The proclamation noted that Hispanics are a large and increasing segment of our population, a vital part of our economy, and that our society has a richness that comes from our diversity of

cultures and races. National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized nationally from September 15 to October 15. It celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Its observation began in 1968 for one week and was expanded to a month in 1988, and enacted into federal law on August 17, 1988. Today’s Board action marked another example of the college’s commitment to diversity and to celebrate the many cultures and people who comprise the college’s student body and employees. Roughly 69% of COD’s students identify themselves as Hispanic. Activities will be organized to commemorate the month once classes begin on September 2 and students are back on campus. College of the Desert is recognized by the United States Department of Education as an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Such colleges must have at least 25% Hispanic undergraduate enrollment of whom 50% or more are low-income. Many students are the first in their family to attend college. HSI institutions are then
eligible for federal grants which can be used for many academic purposes serving all ethnicities at the institution, including faculty development, administrative management, development and improvement of academic programs, endowment funds, curriculum development, scientific or laboratory
equipment for teaching, renovation of instructional facilities, academic tutoring, counseling programs and student support services. Over the last five years, College of the Desert has applied for and received approximately $3.2 million in grants as an HSI. .

By Angela Monroe NAPA VALLEY -- More than 100 people are hurt, homes are destroyed and a state of emergency was declared in California after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked the Napa Valley area around 3:30 Sunday morning. The earthquake sent 120 people to the hospital with injuries. No deaths were reported, but a child was seriously hurt when a fireplace fell on them. Multiple fires started in Napa Valley. The Napa city manager says more than a dozen buildings are destroyed, and numerous other structures damaged. More than 50,000 people were without power. Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency for the area. It was three o’clock in the morning, when this record 6.0 earthquake struck. The epicenter was about six miles from Napa, California. It rattled businesses, homes and some people’s nerves.
“I just held her there -kind of shaking. You know; I stepped on some things along the way that cut my feet a little,” said Napa resident, Annabel Kaplan. This is the largest earthquake to hit the San Francisco area in 25 years. Buildings in Napa’s historic district crumbled corners, sending piles of bricks onto cars parked near by. We are working on security in the downtown area, some of the shopping centers. We will have for several days, a high police presence,” said Captain Steve Potter with Napa Police Department. The quake left cracks in roads, broke water mains and officials say they had reports of more than a hundred gas line leaks, sparking at least six fires. A blaze in a mobile home park destroyed four structures. The town of American Canyon was closest to the epicenter and in one of its grocery stores, there was almost as much on the floor as there was on shelves, but damage to the winery region worries a lot of people in Napa. “We’re looking at a whole lot of cases of wine, that need to be picked back up again.

role. The majority of student loans are for students, but there are loans specifically for parents (e.g., Parent PLUS Loans and some private student loans). Consider the advantages of each and decide whether parent student loans, traditional student loans or a combination is best. Regardless of what’s decided, parents should discuss options and expectations with their child. • Exhaust free money first. Grants, scholarships and other free financial aid can help students pay for costs. Resources such as Discover’s Free Scholarship Search and Studentaid.ed.gov can help students and parents identify and apply for important free money. • Choose the right student loan. With so many choices for loans, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. Families should compare federal and private student loans based on key components, such as interest rates, origination fees and repayment options and
then choose the loans that best fit their financial needs. • Seek consultation. Financing college can be an overwhelming and confusing process. Consider talking to a financial planner who can offer sound advice. More tips can be found at
DiscoverStudentLoans.com. As college costs rise, understanding the financial resources available, as well as having conversations about who is responsible for what, will ultimately provide peace of mind for students and parents. (StatePoint)
Tips to Ensure a Smooth Transition to College By Desert Star Staff The transition to college is an exciting time, full of anticipation for the next chapter of life. But with new opportunities come uncertainties, from financing an education to picking the right courses. “Paying for college and having kids leave the house is new territory for most parents and children. But with research and preparation, parents can help kids learn how to maximize available funds, borrow responsibly and manage their new lives,” says Jodi Okun, founder of College Financial Aid Advisors and brand ambassador for Discover Student Loans. “Parents should encourage kids to take responsibility for forming a long-term financial plan they can work through together.” Okun offers the following tips for a smooth transition: • Empower students: Let students start with smaller decisions, such as what to do with high school graduation money, www.desertstarweekly.com
and then build to bigger ones, such as finding and applying for additional scholarships, and deciding whether they can balance school with work-study or a part-time job. Encourage students to form meaningful relationships with their school’s financial aid office. • Balance dreams with opportunities. While students often pick a major based on childhood passions, parents may steer them toward an in-demand field with a good salary and career trajectory. In fact, 70 percent of parents say job potential after college is as important or more important than choice of major, according to a recent Discover Student Loans survey. Starting salary should also guide how much debt the student takes on. For example, if a student anticipates a $40,000 a year starting salary, he or she should take on no more than $40,000 in student loans over the course of college. • Figure out the parents’

10 New fall TV Shows Worthy of a First-Night Look
By FRAZIER MOORE AP Television Writer NEW YORK - It’s a timehonored rite harking back to an era of black-and-white TVs and the trio of networks whose programs they delivered: the grand unveiling of new fall fare. As part of the ritual, this latest fall crop is an occasion for handicapping the good and the misfires. Granted, it’s a risky business to rate a new series’ prospects on the basis of its pilot episode, which is typically the only thing critics have to go on. But even if it doesn’t guarantee a great series will follow, a pilot must at least trigger interest at a level to get viewers to return the second week. Here are 10 new series that might catch your fancy: - “RED BAND SOCIETY” (Fox; premieres Sept. 17). A group of teenagers meet as patients in the pediatric ward of a Los Angeles hospital. Sure, a show that gathers kids to frolic, flirt and even face death sounds like “Glee” without the jazz hands. But what could have been an overglossed rendering of life’s gravest moments instead comes with heart and a dose of authenticity that ground the good times. “GOTHAM” (Fox; Sept. 22). In an industry where nothing is a sure thing, fall’s most-awaited show by the most-desirable demo would seem to be a sure thing. “Gotham” turns out to be not only an “origin series” about Batman but also a humdinger of a noir crime thriller. Rolling back the clock to when Bruce Wayne was a youngster and his alter ego was years from being conceived, the series lays the groundwork for the Batman myth while introducing not-yetCommissioner James Gordon (played by Ben McKenzie) as a rookie cop. “THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA” (NBC; Sept. 24).
Debra Messing stars as a brilliant, rules-breaking NYPD homicide detective and harried single mother whose estranged detective-husband becomes her boss (awkward!). Messing (“Will & Grace”) has an indisputable gift for comedy. Here she’s arresting as a brassy, disheveled cop in a series that clearly wants to match the light-comedy tone of the long-ago “Columbo.” ‘’Mysteries” has its cops-androbbers element, but it’s mostly helter-skelter fun. “BLACK-ISH” (ABC; Sept. 24). The versatile Anthony Anderson stars as Andre, a determined patriarch who sets out to restore (or is it establish?) a sense of cultural identity for his middle-class African-American family which, he worries, is ethnically unmoored. Andre’s concern isn’t shared by his biracial wife, Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), or their four kids. But Andre frets about “keeping it real.” This is a clever premise, whose black-centricity has plenty to say about the pros and cons of assimilation by any group. It’s a lot of Deep Thoughts packed into a fluffy sitcom, but “blackish” seems up to the challenge. “HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER” (ABC; Sept. 25). A legendary attorney is fearless in the courtroom representing society’s worst criminals. Then she’s fearless in the classroom as she drills a no-holds-barred philosophy of law into her students - and she selects a group of her top students to work at her law firm, where they fall under her spell as they help tackle her toughest cases. “Murder” promises to be twisty, wicked, dark and fun. And it stars Viola Davis, who brings life to a character of endless calculations and mystery. “MANHATTAN LOVE STORY” (ABC; Sept. 30). Girl meets guy in the Big Apple. She’s new in town and full of romantic

He’s a true Gothamite who lives the sporting life. And of course opposites attract. Meanwhile, the audience is privy to their innermost thoughts about dating and other pressing matters via the characters’ voiceovers. This “Love Story,” starring winsome Analeigh Tipton and wisecracking Jake McDorman, touches the heart and, more important, the funny bone. “BAD JUDGE” (NBC; Oct. 2). Good judge, bad girl: That’s the character Kate Walsh tackles on this new sitcom. Judge Rebecca Wright is unforgiving on the bench but an unapologetic party animal elsewhere. Walsh presides with little judicial restraint on a show you’ll find guilty of selective raciness and plenty of laughs. “THE FLASH” (CW, Oct. 7). A young man named Barry Allen awakens from a coma after being struck by lightning, only to find he has the power of superspeed. Ipso facto, he becomes a superhero. It’s more
complicated, of course, but what really matters is: This version of a familiar comic-book stud feels refreshingly re-thought, and should satisfy fans as well as those who have never found their way into the Flash ethos. It stars Grant Gustin (“Glee,” ‘’Arrow”) who, in his grand unveiling as Barry’s fleet-footed alter ego, eschews the familiar red long johns in favor of a different kind of uniform. Message: This is a new brand of Flash. “JANE THE VIRGIN” (CW, Oct. 13). The one-line description of this series seems like a cruelty joke: Jane Villanueva, an effervescent young Miami woman with her eyes trained on the future and her knees clamped virtuously together, is mistakenly impregnated with a specimen meant for someone else. And to add a further twist, the specimen came from the owner of the luxury hotel that employs Jane as a waitress. The wonder of this series is that it feels fully plausible, authentic and delightful, unfolding in a
multicultural world with the irresistible Gina Rodriguez in the title role. Time will tell if its grand ambitions outstrip its ability to deliver, but in the short term it succeeds in the thing a TV series rarely does: It keeps you guessing what will happen next. “MARRY ME” (NBC, Oct. 14). Jake and Annie are a modern version of George Burns and Gracie Allen. Annie is flighty. Jake is settled and eternally amused by Annie’s zaniness. Except that, unlike George and Gracie, Jake and Annie aren’t yet married, or even engaged - just dating for six-years-and-counting, with Annie more than ready for Jake to pop the question. On this slender premise hang the ample comic gifts of co-stars Ken Marino and Casey Wilson, not to mention those of series creator David Caspe, whose fast-paced, clever style was first displayed in his hilarious sitcom “Happy Endings,” in which Wilson, now his real-life bride, starred. Over 8 million people worldwide have seen the amazing arena show “Walking With Dinosaurs” which has thrilled audiences in 243 cities around the world. The concept for the show originated in Australia and depicts the evolution of ten dinosaur species, including the awesome and ever-popular T-Rex himself. So get ready to travel back over 200 million years in time to marvel at the reign of the magnificent dinosaur in this spectacular show that will take you from the Triassic Period to the Jurassic Period (remember the movie?) and then on to the Cretaceous Period. This updated version also showcases the recent changes in scientific thinking based on
new research, which suggests that some dinosaur species had feathers. Who knew? What’s so amazing is the fact that the dinosaurs in the show are life-sized. For example, the Brachiosaurus is 36 feet tall and 56 feet long from nose to tail—a very impressive sight. Thinking about this reminds me of the first time I saw the show. Before it started there was a little girl, about three years old or so, sitting behind us. She was all smiles, clutching a tiny dinosaur figure, but joy turned to terror when the giant creatures entered the arena. Needless to say, she and her mom left right away, so be prepared. What’s new on DVD? For adults the answer is “The Angriest Man in Brooklyn,” starring Robin Williams in one of his final film performances. In this one the premise is prophetic and adds to the bittersweet tone of this dark comedy about a man, Henry Altmann, who is having a very bad day. It only gets worse when he is told that he has just 90 minutes left to get everything in order. The film, based on an Israeli movie about a man who has been angry at the world for quite a long time, begins as Altmann (Williams) is rushing to a doctor’s appointment. His doctor has taken the weekend, off so he hears the drastic news of his condition from Dr. Sharon Gill (Mila Kunis) substituting for Altmann’s regular doctor. She too has been having a hideous day and when he shouts and screams at her about his prognosis she blurts out “90 minutes.” The news sends Altmann running out in his hospital gown, clutching his clothes as he seeks to make amends with all h e has
alienated in his life. Peter Dinklage plays his younger brother and business partner, and Melissa Leo is his long-suffering wife. He also has to deal with his son, who has disappointed him by not wanting to join him in the family law firm, preferring to become a dancer instead. From Lionsgate, rated R for language throughout and some sexual content. ******* Kids will enjoy Disney’s short film “Toy Story of Terror” which features the Toy Story gang of Woody, Buzz, cowgirl Jessie and all their pals. In this adventure, the little group is off on an exciting road trip which doesn’t go well when the family checks into a roadside motel during a storm. Suddenly, Mr. Potato Head disappears, and his friends find themselves entangled in a mystery that must be solved before they too suffer the same fate. The DVD and Blu-ray also feature 3 more hilarious Toy Story cartoons: “Small Fry,” “Hawaiian Vacation” and “Partysaurus Rex,” all rated G naturally. The Blu-ray and DVD also feature vintage toy commercials, deleted scenes and audio commentary.

Another DVD for the younger crowd is Inception Media Groups “The Junior Spy Agency,” starring Kevin Sorbo and Dee Wallace. This kid crime caper will be fun for the back to school crowd. In the story, the agency kids are back in school after spending their summer solving crimes with fellow detective Emma Marsh (Katherine McNamara) and their trusty sidekick, Doug the Dog. The head of the spy agency, Sam Steele (Jacob Hays), is not thrilled to put his junior spy agency on hold while school is in session, but things change when Sam’s history assignment leads him to clues that may uncover a priceless stolen treasure. Immediately the kids are on the case, pitted against Cash (Kevin Sorbo) and his gang of bumbling thieves. The young sleuths race to recover the treasure before it will fall into the wrong hands forever, which just goes to prove that homework can be important and really fun.

New DVD/Blu-rays Deliver Sonic and Visual Thrills An essential collector’s edition of the seminal 1974 rock horror classic “Phantom of the Paradise,” as well as recent concert films featuring ZZ Top and Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson are among the most notable DVD/Blu-ray music titles of summer 2014.
the groundbreaking Brian De Palma-directed rock ‘n’ roll horror fantasy film. While a highdefinition transfer of the movie and new audio commentary with many of the key players is the obvious highlight of the release, a bonus DVD disc features a wealth of new interviews, a documentary on the making of the film and an in-depth hourlong chat with actor-songwriter Paul Williams moderated by film director Guillermo Del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Hellboy”). Music and film fans who have never seen “Phantom of the Paradise” will want to discover, and fall in love with this timeless cult classic. Information: ShoutFactory.com.

Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: ZZ Top, Los Lonely Boys, the Black Keys Tell me more: It’s hard to remember a time when ZZ Top hasn’t been cranking out its unique blend of Texas-brewed blues-rock. The group’s 45-year legacy is fully on display on “ZZ Top Live at Montreux,” a 17-song concert film that features the trio rocking through classics from the 1970s (notably “Tush” and “La Grange”), ‘80s (including “Legs,” “Sharp Dressed Man”) and off their 2012 return-to-form “La Futura” (the heavy “Flyin’ High” with a melodic chorus boasting 3-part harmonies soars), and even a rollicking cover of the Jimi Hendrix classic “Foxey Lady.” “ZZ Top Live at Montreux 2013” is available on DVD, Blu-ray and

Title: “Thick As a Brick - Live In Iceland” (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Jethro Tull’s “A Passion Play,” Fairport Convention, Ian Anderson Tell me more: Fans of Jethro Tull’s epic 1972 LP “Thick As a Brick” were able to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that legendary 44-minute, singletrack album when singersongwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson went out on the road with an outstanding fiveman troupe to perform that masterwork, as well as the 2012 follow-up “Thick As a Brick 2:
Whatever Happened to Gerald Bostock?” Now comes the ultimate keepsake of the 2012 tour via “Thick As a Brick - Live In Iceland.” Available on both DVD and Blu-ray (as well as on digital formats), this marks the first time that the complete narrative tale of Gerald Bostock is available on a single commercial release. Recorded in Reykjavik, Iceland on June 22, 2012, the release confirms that “Thick As a Brick” is one of the most progressive and sophisticated albums of the classic rock era; the work continues to challenge listeners with its mix of sections and tempos that defy convention. This DVD/Blu-ray effort brings a well-deserved new look at the album and its worthy followup. Information: eagle-rock.com.
Miley Cyrus’ Date Wanted by Oregon Police By STEVEN DUBOIS Associated Press PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The young homeless man who accompanied Miley Cyrus to the MTV Video Music Awards has a warrant out for his arrest in Oregon. Jesse Helt, 22, was arrested on charges of criminal mischief, criminal trespass and burglary in 2010. According to court records, he broke into the apartment of a man who had been selling what Helt believed to be bad marijuana. Helt, who was 18 at the time, pleaded guilty to criminal mischief and criminal trespass, both misdemeanors, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and probation. The arrest warrant was issued in November 2011 after he violated probation. Helt moved to Los Angeles and lived on the streets while trying to find work as a model. He gained worldwide attention Sunday when Cyrus let him accept her award for video of the year. Helt, who met Cyrus through the Hollywood homeless center My Friend’s Place, used the platform to call attention to the issue of youth homelessness.

“I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost, and scared for their lives right now,” Helt said. “I know this because I am one of these people.” Polk County Director of Community Corrections Martin Silbernagel said Tuesday officials are trying to locate Helt and arrest him. He said Helt repeatedly failed to meet with his probation officer. “He doesn’t make himself available to community supervision, and he takes off,” Silbernagel said. Linda Helt, Jesse’s mother, told reporters Monday that Cyrus had given her son some money and he was flying home for a visit.
Sheriff’s detective John asked: “Does looking down upon contributed to this story Williams went to the mother’s the homeless help people excuse Follow Steven DuBois at Salem home Tuesday, but did not their inaction?” twitter.com/pdxdub Source: find Helt. Williams said he spoke Jonathan J. Cooper in Salem KMIR with the family and let them know he’s looking for Jesse. The telephone at the family home was busy Tuesday morning. A sign posted outside asked people not to trespass: “Only family & friends & neighbors at this time.” Court records show Helt was arrested by Salem police three times as a juvenile, for offenses such as marijuana possession and being a minor in possession of tobacco products and liquor. As Helt’s moment in the sun took a dark twist, Cyrus said via Twitter: “People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included.” She then

California Plans to Build Quake Early-Warning System By Desert Start Staff California is seeking funding for a statewide earthquake early-warning system to give residents some prior notice in the case of future temblors. The effort has new urgency following the magnitude-6.0 quake in Napa Valley on Sunday. State Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla’s law calling for such a warning system was approved by the Legislature last year. The California Office of Emergency Services (OES) is working to finalize a funding plan for the $80 million alert operation by early next year, he told KPCC. Such a system could give up to 50 seconds advance warning, according to the Los Angeles Times, in order to give people time to seek proper shelter. A research prototype of the early-warning system ShakeAlert - at the University of California Berkeley gave alert about ten seconds in advance of Sunday’s quake, the epicenter of which was around 6 miles south of the city of Napa. OES has until early 2016 to come to a funding plan, which will include money from both public and private sources. Though under Padilla’s law,
none of the funding can come from the state’s general fund. But Padilla said he would call for state lawmakers to reconsider that provision if OES cannot attain needed funding. “I am confident that we will be able to secure and identify funding from other sources,” Padilla said. “But I think if necessary, we, in the future, should revisit the general fund.” Appropriations committees in both houses of the US Congress have set aside $5 million for such a system. US Rep. Adam Schiff, a member of the House Appropriations Committee from the Los Angeles area, said the prototype’s success bodes well for a statewide system. “While this was not the ‘Big One,’ we need to be prepared to save lives and protect vital infrastructure - even a few seconds of warning will allow people to seek cover, automatically slow or stop trains, pause surgeries and more,” he said in a statement. Los Angeles recently received a $5 million dollar grant from FEMA for an alert system, according to Padilla, who represents part of nearby San Fernando Valley.

We’ll “continue to look for federal opportunities, for private sector opportunities until the system is up and running,” Padilla said. Damage from the Napa Valley quake may total more than $1 billion by the time officials
can calculate costs. Around 100 people were injured, mostly from stumbling on broken glass and other debris after the temblor hit before dawn, at 3:20 a.m. local time. The area will be susceptible to aftershocks in the coming weeks, geologists said.
The quake was the region’s largest in 25 years. In 1989, a magnitude-6.9 Loma Prieta struck the San FranciscoOakland area, killing more than 60 people, most from a freeway collapse.
Lizzy Caplan, Lena Dunham: Emmys Highs and Lows
By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - The gowns came in all shapes at Monday’s Emmy Awards, dominated by reds, blues and whites. And then there was “House of Cards” actress Robin Wright, dazzling in a cream Ralph Lauren jumpsuit with a plunging tuxedo jacket front and virtually no back at all. “Of all the stars wearing head-to-toe white, Robin Wright

stole the show,” said Eric Wilson, fashion news director for InStyle magazine. “It was the ultimate power look from the front with a sexy backless surprise.” Wilson, a fan of on-trend crisp, monochromatic looks, called it “anything but boring,” proving once again that a clean approach can still pack a lot of drama. A look at a few highs and lows from the red carpet: LIZZY CAPLAN: Wilson wasn’t alone in loving the
“Masters of Sex” star’s Donna Karan Atelier - backless, black, and with a long white train. Quite a difference, he said, from her days playing the shaggy haired, frumpily dressed Janis Ian in his favorite movie, “Mean Girls.” The gown balanced a traditional full skirt with a skintight swimsuit-inspired bodice. Wilson called it the best example of a major trend on the red carpet: halter necklines. Others offering interesting takes on the halter were Julie Bowen wearing a blue-and-white patterned Peter Som, Laverne Cox looking like a goddess in white Marc Bouwer and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in a fitted Carolina Herrera in raspberry red. Joyann King, digital director for Harper’s Bazaar, was also a fan, granting Caplan the “award for best graphic glamour of the night.” CHRISTINA HENDRICKS: Who can go wrong in Marchesa? Christina Hendricks, that’s who. The “Mad Men” star’s gown, a one-shoulder in red satin, had a gaudy gold floral design embroidered above the waist on one side, an abundance of draped fabric and a strange seam that tightened the full skirt above the knees. And there was a train somewhere in there. JULIA ROBERTS: Roberts was a pop of something different on an otherwise mostly lackluster carpet. She made a August 27, 2014
statement in a dark blue Elie Saab Haute Couture with balls of beading, long sleeves and a flouncy, mid-thigh skirt. The neckline plunged, but the look was classic and fun. “It’s nerve-wracking to wear long,” she told E! News. “There’s the tripping factor.” The frock, with a peplum frill that showed off her narrow waist and curves, got a nod from King. Roberts was refreshing in navy and “boasting legs for
days,” King said. LENA DUNHAM: Lena is Lena. And she never fails to surprise on red carpets. This time around, she wore a bulky tulle skirt in ombre - pink-to-red. It was awkwardly high waisted and paired with a button-down, cap-sleeved blouse in a lighter shade of pink. And she had new hair: a platinum bob. Los Angeles’ FYF Fest, Not Coachella Just Yet By Dan Marinelli LOS ANGELES – When Sean Carlson founded FYF (Expletive Yeah Fest) in 2004, the music promoter probably had no idea it would grow into what some are now calling Los Angeles’ miniCoachella. This past weekend, the alternative-indie rock show invaded Exposition Park and Sports Arena for the first time in the festival’s history. The two-day function featured the likes of The Strokes, Interpol, Tanlines, Haim, Grimes, Blood Orange, Flying Lotus, Little Dragon, Phoenix and many more to entertain the So Cal masses. FYF had called L.A.’s Historic Park home for the previous five years but renovations forced the music festival to relocate in 2014. Hosting plenty of music festivals in the past, Exposition Park is no stranger to housing tens of thousands of people, however, FYF’s arrangement of the entrance, stages and food trucks on the opening day was surprisingly problematic. From a bird’s-eye view, the boundaries of the festival looked like a horseshoe that swung around the historic Los Angeles Coliseum. The entrance fed into the Lawn stage and north end of the U-shape. On the opposite
end was the carelessly set Main Stage – which naturally drew most of hipster swarm. In the middle of the parabola design was the Arena stage located in the Sports Arena, horizontally adjacent to the Trees stage. Rock fans packed all four stages and with the emergence of the foodie culture they also packed the famous local food trucks like Kogi and Grilled Cheese Truck that also made the Drive to Indio for Coachella. The food was one of the countless highlights of the festival but lack of thought put into the placement of the some of the trucks caused massive congestion. The mobile gourmet eateries were parked perpendicular to the only walkway from The Lawn and The Trees stage to the Main Stage. Thus, the long ordering lines were blocking everyone from getting to the far Main Stage. The human traffic jam was not opening night’s only complication. By deciding to open only the floor of the Sports Arena, the event’s coordinators did not account for the artists they placed in the Arena to draw so many people. Unfortunately, security had to turn most of FYF away once the Sports Arena’s floor hit capacity seven hours
before the end of the night. These blunders did annoy few but because there was another day of food, music and fun, the festival had an opportunity to make up for Saturday’s issues. On the second day, the hiccups were resolved and everything ran smoothly. Some food trucks were relocated. The Arena stage opened up the entire stadium’s seating for dancing. Even the entrance was altered to filter
attendees into the venue quicker. S u n d a y ’s proxemic relief made Saturday’s woes forgettable. Though not as massive, FYF provides the same good vibe and escapist atmosphere that Coachella offers. Not to mention some of the same awesome food vendors, multiple beer gardens which reside next to the stages and some of the most talented musicians from around the world.
Obviously Coachella’s layout is better but this was the first year FYF was held at Exposition Park, some minor error is to be expected. Overall the two days were a success. With the growth of the music festival population, expect F-Yeah Fest to only get bigger; who knows, maybe in a few years it will evolve into Los Angeles’ Coachella. Director Gail Mancuso of “Breaking Bad” chose to look at McConaughey as she was accepting her award. “I knew if I had to look at my cast, I would tear up,” she said backstage. “I thought, ‘what’s the next best thing? Matthew McConaughey.’ He was sitting right there.” Ye t t h e o n l y t i m e McConaughey went on the stage was when he and “True Detectives” co-star Woody Harrelson were presenters. Their HBO series was the subject of much pre-show hubbub - many in Hollywood thought it should be in the miniseries category, not drama - but it proved a moot point as the major awards went elsewhere. Roberts and Ruffalo weren’t honored for their roles in the HBO movie about the early days of AIDS, “The Normal Heart,” although the project won the Emmy for best TV movie. Jumping back and forth between television and feature films isn’t as unusual as it used to be, with television in a robust creative period. But with a lot of quality work out there, names aren’t enough to guarantee an award. Emmys host Seth Meyers made note of the unusual time slot for the awards show, on a Monday (Sunday is the usual date) in late August. It was NBC’s turn to air the show, and the network didn’t want to preempt its lucrative Sunday night
NFL football package. “If I understand television, it means the Emmys are about to be cancelled,” Meyers joked. Once the awards began, some of television’s royalty added to their trophy cases. Jim Parsons, star of television’s most popular comedy, “The Big Bang Theory,” won his fourth straight award for best comedy actor. It was the third year in a row for Julia Louis-Dreyfus of HBO’s “Veep” to win the best comic actress award. Julianna Margulies, the star of CBS’ “The Good Wife,” was the beneficiary of an especially strong season for the show, winning her second Emmy as best actress in a drama. For all the pre-show talk about new forms of television distribution, it was a good night for network television, between Margulies, Parsons and “Modern Family.” Allison Janney won a best supporting actress award for her role in the freshman CBS sitcom, “Mom.” Netflix and its biggest shows, “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black,” didn’t win any major awards. The Emmys included a touching tribute to Robin Williams, who died earlier this month, by his comedian friend Billy Crystal. “He made us laugh. Hard. Every time you saw him,” Crystal said. Not a Good Night for Movies Stars at Emmys
(Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP). Woody Harrelson, left, and Matthew McConaughey present the award for outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or a movie on stage at the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre L.A. By DAVID BAUDER AP Television Writer The Emmys welcomed plenty of movie stars to television’s biggest awards show, including Julia Roberts, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Spacey, Mark Ruffalo and the reigning Oscar winner for best actor, Matthew McConaughey. All were sent home empty-handed. Instead, the Emmys opted for the tried and true Monday night, giving a long goodbye kiss to “Breaking Bad” and its cast, and the fifth straight award for best comedy to ABC’s “Modern Family.” Bryan Cranston, who played the memorable meth dealer

Walter White on “Breaking Bad,” won his fourth best drama actor Emmy, tying him with another four-time winner, Dennis Franz. Aaron Paul won his third supporting actor award playing Cranston’s fictional colleague in crime. Anna Gunn, who played Cranston’s wife, won for the second straight year and the series won its second consecutive best drama award. The bounty proved Emmy voters have a long memory, since the “Breaking Bad” finale aired 11 months ago. “Thank you for this wonderful farewell to our show,” creator Vince Gilligan said. “Modern Family” co-creator
Steve Levitan almost seemed at a loss for something new to say as the ABC show matched the five-year winning streak of “Frasier” in its heyday. Actor Ty Burrell won a best supporting actor award. “It’s a wonder that we get to do this for a living, that we get to be the ones up here when there are so many deserving shows,” Levitan said. For much of the evening, the Emmys seemed to bask in Hollywood’s glow, especially McConaughey’s aura. He was the willing foil for jokes, particularly by Jimmy Kimmel. “You don’t belong here,” Kimmel said. “And take Julia Roberts with you.” August 27, 2014
