By Desert Star Staff • Mean kinship is a widely accepted conservation method used within zoos. It is a measure of the importance of an animal as it relates to genetics. This is achieved by limiting the selection and reducing the loss of alleles due to inbreeding. This is done by selecting individuals with less represented alleles to breed. • Animals with a low mean kinship are genetically important and are advised to breed. • Animals with a higher mean kinship are well represented within the population. • There are only 58 black rhinos in AZA human care. Jaali and Nia, the black

This breeding recommendation is thoughtfully calculated years ahead of sexual maturity. • Peninsular pronghorn are part of an ongoing reintroduction program in Baja California, Mexico, which The Living Desert has been a part of for many years. Andrew Cuomo stripped of Emmy & Erased from award history

By Desert Star Staff The 2020 International Emmy given to Andrew Cuomo for his Covid-19 briefings was only good while the Democrat served as governor of New York. Less than a day after his resignation went into effect, it was revoked.

On Tuesday, the New York-based International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that “in light of the New York Attorney General’s report, and Andrew Cuomo’s subsequent resignation as Governor, it is rescinding his special 2020

and Cuomo announced his resignation a week later. It went into effect on Monday. Democrat Kathy Hochul was sworn in as his replacement just after midnight on Tuesday. While the International Academy didn’t elaborate on its actions, they waited until Cuomo was no longer governor to revoke his award and purge him from their history. Back in November 2020, they were singing another tune, giving Cuomo a Founders Award “for effective communication and leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic” and “his masterful use of TV to inform and calm people around the world.” International Emmy Award.” Cuomo’s daily briefings “His name and any “worked so well because he reference to his receiving the effectively created television award will be eliminated from shows, with characters, plot International Academy materials lines, and stories of success going forward,” they added. and failure,” Bruce Paisner, However, the report president and CEO of the referenced in the statement International Academy, said at was released on August 3, the time. “People around the

world tuned in to find out what was going on, and ‘New York tough’ became a symbol of the determination to fight back.” The award put Cuomo in the company of TV legends such as J.J. Abrams, Norman Lear, Steven Spielberg, and Oprah Winfrey – and angered critics who protested that his state had one of the worst death tolls, including the vulnerable elderly in nursing homes that he ordered to accept Covid-19 patients. As a result, US President Joe Biden’s administration abandoned the investigation into that particular scandal in July. The International Academy, which handed out – and has now rescinded – the award, is itself based in New York. Cuomo had governed the state for ten years and previously held the job of the state attorney general. His father Mario had been governor for three terms as well.

Three Ways You Can Get Involved Locally to Help Afghan Refugees

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, DC-)- On July 30, the first evacuation flight of Afghans fleeing the Taliban left Afghanistan and touched down in Virginia. The plane was carrying 200 men, women and children from the families of America’s Afghan allies. Faced with the prospect of persecution and violence if they stayed in Afghanistan, these refugees chose to seek shelter and safety on U.S. soil. But in a matter of just a few weeks, an already dangerous situation became genuinely dire for the hundreds of thousands of Afghans still waiting for their chance to leave. On August 15, the capital city of Kabul fell into Taliban control. Now, Afghan families are desperate for a way out before it’s too late. Jenny Yang is the senior vice president of advocacy and policy at World Relief (https://worldrelief.org/ respond/), a faith-based nonprofit that helps resettle refugees. As part of her work at World Relief, she wants to show Americans how they can get involved to help make life better for the Afghan refugees coming to America. “Since 1980, America’s refugee resettlement program has set the standard for welcoming refugees into the country. But it relies on a network of nonprofits, along with their volunteers and advocates, to really work,” Yang says. “Our Afghan allies and their families are facing unprecedented challenges resettling in the U.S., and it’s up to all Americans to lend a helping hand.” If America can step

up for Afghan refugees, hundreds of ー if not thousands of ー of lives could be forever changed. Here are Yang’s three ways that anyone can get involved in helping Afghan refugees. 1) Advocate: Change starts with awareness. “You have to create awareness about the issues and challenge people to think differently about refugees. Your voice is your most powerful tool in creating a culture that welcomes refugees,” says Yang. For most Americans, that means speaking up to politicians at the state and national level to advocate for refugees. Congress has to act fast to evacuate and save as many Afghan refugees as possible. But it can also mean advocating for refugees at the local level and in local communities. Ultimately, refugees need more than just the right policy from government leaders – they need a welcoming place to stay. Building such a place in your local community starts with changing minds, and changing minds starts with advocacy. 2) Volunteer: All across the country, there are prorefugee nonprofits, churches and volunteer organizations working to shape a better future for Afghan refugees. These groups need people willing and able to help. “The process of starting a new life in a new country is not an easy one, and refugees can’t do it alone. Hundreds of Afghan refugees have

already been brought to the United States; they need good neighbors to help them find their way,” says Yang. Most Afghan refugees are being received in the major cities of Sacramento, Seattle and Modesto, and the region of northern Virginia. But there are plenty of resources online. You can use Refugee Council USA, for example, to find your nearest refugee resettlement office (https://rcusa.org/ get-involved/volunteer/)

NFL Already Cashing in on Sports Betting By Desert Star Staff The NFL helped lead the legal fight against sports betting in the U.S. Having lost; the league has now fully embraced having some skin in the game. This season, sportsbooks will be allowed to advertise during games for the first time. While specifics have not been made public, the league will reportedly allow six television sportsbook spots per game, with broadcasters CBS, NBC, FOX, and ESPN free to negotiate with sponsors. Although legal sports betting is in its nascent stages in the U.S., the NFL is set up for success. • IN APRIL, the NFL struck sponsorship deals

with FanDuel, Caesars Entertainment, and DraftKings, allowing those companies to display NFL content in their apps and integrate with media properties such as NFL.com. The five-year agreements are collectively worth around $1 billion, per the Wall Street Journal. • The league also permits WynnBET, BetMGM, PointsBet, and Flutter’s Fox Bet to advertise during games. • The American Gaming Association calculated in 2018 that sports betting could eventually add $2.3 billion to the NFL’s annual revenue. According to analyst estimates, the online gambling industry, which includes sports betting and casino-style games, could reach $40 billion in the U.S. in the next decade.

Flag Ladies Monument in Jonesboro, Maine, near the ‘tip lands’ where the balsam is harvested to make veterans’ wreaths for placement on National Wreaths Across America Day each December.

The monument, located on Route 1, was built by Wreaths Across America and Worcester Wreath Company in September 2019. The Freeport Flag Ladies retired following 18 years of waving the American Flag in Freeport, Maine, each Tuesday since September 11, 2001. “Now, more than ever, it is so critical for communities to come together to Remember all those who served, and Honor their service and their family’s service, especially those who volunteered during the War on Terror following the events of September 11, 2001,” said WAA Executive Director, Karen Worcester. “But more than anything, we must Teach our children about these men and women and the courage and commitment it takes to be a part of the small number of Americans who protect all our freedoms. So please join me on September 7, as we wave the flag across America, like we do each Tuesday morning, and never forget that Freedom isn’t free, and it must be protected.”

The flag-waving event will begin at 8:45 am ET and conclude at 10:05 am ET. In addition to the National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance and sharing of stories, the event will include four moments of silence, as listed below. At 8:46 am, on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, five hijackers took control of American Airlines Flight 11 and flew it into the heart of New York City and the northern facade of the World Trade Center’s North Tower (1 WTC). • At 9:03 am, five other hijackers flew United Airlines Flight 175 into the southern facade of the South Tower (2 WTC). • At 9:37 am, another five hijackers flew American Airlines flight 77 into the western facade of the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. • At 10:03 am, four hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 93 into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Antifa & Proud Boys clash violently in Portland

By Desert Star Staff Dozens of right-wing Proud Boys and leftist Antifa members have clashed in a chaotic street showdown in Portland, armed with various improvised weapons ranging from bats and shields to paintball guns, mace and fireworks. A brief gun battle also erupted in downtown Portland on Sunday, according to multiple videos shared by

witnesses. Some of them showed a middle-aged man in a fedora hat hiding behind trash bins and firing several shots across the street. From another angle, it appears that shots were fired towards the shooter as well, though it remains unclear who opened fire first. Some reports suggested the man was a Proud Boys supporter who was being chased away by Antifa

members before opening fire. No injuries were reported, but several buildings and cars were damaged by gunfire. Police swiftly detained the shooter seen in the videos, who apparently did not resist arrest, but it was unclear whether they were looking for other suspects. The shooting took place amid an already chaotic day in Portland, which has

seen dozens of people from opposite camps clashing with each other, using all kinds of improvised weapons According to the Oregonian, the day began with a group of some 300 leftwing protesters swarming the area of central Tom McCall Waterfront Park and forcing a rival camp of around 100 rightwing activists to relocate their event to an abandoned Kmart parking lot in the northeast of the city. However, smaller Antifa groups soon followed the Proud Boys to the new site, apparently engaging in verbal exchanges and skirmishes. At one point, a van crashed into the parking lot. The alleged ‘left-wing agitator’ behind the wheel was maced and chased away, and right-wing protesters overturned his vehicle. There was no visible police presence throughout the day besides the officers who arrested the gunman and swept the scene. In the run-up to the showdown, Portland police warned that they wouldn’t intervene in clashes

and instead “will be sharing public safety information with the public via Twitter.” “You should not expect to see police officers standing in the middle of the crowd trying to keep people apart. On Friday, Portland Police Bureau Chief Chuck Lovell said, people should keep themselves apart and avoid physical confrontation,” Portland Police Bureau Chief Chuck Lovell said Friday. Police defended their tactics in another press release on Sunday afternoon, acknowledging they were aware of some “violence” and “property destruction,” requesting public help in identifying the victims and perpetrators. “Detectives are reviewing evidence to determine whether charges can be brought for any criminal activity,” PPB said. “Just because arrests are not made at the scene, when tensions are high, does not mean that people are not being charged with crimes later.”

Google’s Plan to Take Over Epic Games

By Desert Star Staff The plot thickens for Epic Games v. Google. Epic sued Google in August 2020 for removing “Fortnite” from Google Play after Epic circumvented Google’s in-app billing requirements. Google takes a 30% cut of revenue from apps launched in the Play Store. A fully unredacted version of Epic’s complaint was released on Thursday, revealing Google’s lengths to stop other developers from leaving Google Play. The tech giant estimated it was at risk of losing as much as $6 billion by 2022 if there was an exodus of developers. • Under the initiative “Project Hug,” Google

reportedly paid out hundreds of millions of dollars to game developers, incentivizing them to keep games on the Play Store rather than follow Epic’s lead. • Google’s “Premier Device Program” also paid phone makers not to preinstall other app stores. Google even considered acquiring Epic to neutralize the threat. According to the unredacted complaint, a senior Google executive proposed buying shares from Tencent — which owns 40% of Epic — to “get more control over Epic,” or teaming up with Tencent to buy 100% of Epic.

At least 21 dead in Tennessee floods as dozens remain missing

By Desert Star Staff The flooding has killed at least 21 people, and dozens are missing in just one Tennessee county after more than 15 inches of rain deluged the state’s central region, trapping some

residents in neck-high water. According to the local emergency management agency, the death toll in Humphreys County climbed to 21 as of Sunday afternoon, and 45 people were still missing as crews

A stretch of Interstate 40 had to be closed on Saturday as more than 15 inches (over 380mm) of rain fell in Humphreys County, and parts of Hickman County got nearly 12 inches (305mm). According to the NWS, the Piney River rose to nearly 32 feet (9.75m) in Hickman County, exceeding a previous record of 20 feet (6m). The measure was seven feet above the central flood stage. The Nashville area and other parts of central Tennessee have historically been hit by major floods, including a 2010 disaster that killed 31 people in three states and caused $2.3 billion in property damage. How the Covid IP-waiver could sabotage crucial cancer research By Andrew Spiegel President Biden craves a cure for cancer. In a speech to Congress this spring, he vowed to “end cancer as we know it.” And as Vice President, he helped start the Cancer Moonshot initiative. Yet by giving his backing to a global waiver of intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines, President Biden may have endangered millions of Americans living with cancer. The Biden administration said it would join a World Trade Organization move to suspend IP safeguards for the vaccines. Its intentions are undoubtedly sincere, founded in the belief that a waiver will help rid the world of Covid. Yet, the setting aside of IP protections has consequences that the administration seems to have overlooked. If adopted, the waiver won’t galvanize the supply of vaccines bound for the developing world -- certainly not in the immediate term. Instead, it will threaten scientific innovation that could lead to cures for cancer and other diseases. I’ll explain why. Technically, the waiver supported by the United States would only apply to IP on Covid vaccines. So what has this got to do with cancer? There are two consequences. First, intellectual property underpins scientists’ incentives to make discoveries. Second, without proprietary “armor” to protect research, rivals could blithely -- and lawfully -- use scientists’ know-how, data, or manufacturing processes. www.desertstarweekly.com

Second, waiving IP on underlying vaccine technology has ramifications for drug innovation. Since the same technologies are used for potential treatments for other diseases, vaccine-makers would have to give up IP on those projects too. Consider the PfizerBioNTech and Moderna vaccines. They use “mRNA” to promote an immune response to Covid-19, a technology that took decades to develop. With the successful rollout of mRNA Covid-19 vaccines, researchers in the United States and Germany hope to use mRNA to fight other viruses. Moderna has active trials for mRNA vaccines for Zika, HIV, and the flu. Cancer doctors and patients pray that mRNA is the key to a cure. Moderna, in fact, has two mRNA vaccine candidates for cancer. In addition, researchers hope that mRNA could instruct the body to combat cancerous tumors like it fights a virus. With the IP waiver, Moderna’s mRNA technology could end up with rivals, leaving the company with greatly diminished incentives -- and significantly reduced investment dollars -- to continue with mRNA clinical trials, including ones for cancer. As a result, advanced drug innovation could come to a halt. What investor would fund biotech startups if copycats can swoop in? This scenario is made incredibly distressing by the fact that the upsides of the IP waiver are negligible. Manufacturers need specialized facilities and

hundreds of ingredients to make vaccines. Vaccinemakers have struck licensing deals to scale up production. Every facility on earth that can safely produce effective vaccines is already doing so. Getting rid of IP won’t make the scale-up go any faster. It could, however, unleash millions of shoddy copycats and event counterfeit vaccine doses. President Biden has shown how he can help vaccinate the world without holding mRNA research hostage. For instance, he has already agreed to donate 580 million of the United States’ surplus vaccine doses to COVAX -- a WHO, CEPI, and Gavi co-led initiative to distribute Covid-19 vaccines to developing countries. With President Biden, the cancer community has an ally in the White House. And yet, with the

IP waiver, he’s undermining the only industry that may find a cure for cancer. Andrew Spiegel, the

amily traditions and in-person connections are important parts of gatherings of loved ones, and many of those get-togethers are centered on food. The entire family coming together around a table covered with warm, delicious food to share stories and create new memories is what makes mealtime special. Forty chefs from around the nation came together to create “Come to the Table,” which offers a delicious mix of cuisines from a variety of cultures, including this sampling of classic family favorites, sweet indulgences and family-style creations all inspired by what family means to each chef. “Sales from this book will directly benefit the families we serve, so we are so grateful for each and every chef that has offered their time and talent to this cookbook,” said Jill Cumnock, CEO of Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. “The way ‘Come to the Table’ has been created reminds me of a recipe that culminates in a feast for the senses. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our 40th anniversary, particularly at a time when families are starting to reunite after the pandemic forced so many apart.” Visit rmhdallas.org for more information and to order the cookbook.

Run knife or spatula carefully around edges to separate. Place plate on top of cake and, while holding it, flip over carefully and quickly. Refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight before serving.

Green Curry

Preheat oven to 420 F. Bring pot of salted water to boil. Cook pasta shells according to package instructions. Drain then set aside. Heat pot or cast-iron casserole dish over medium heat. Once hot, add oil, garlic, onion and mushrooms. Add pinch of sea salt and pepper as it cooks. Cook until onions turn brown and mushrooms shrink in size, about 3-5 minutes. Empty contents and set aside. Place pot back over heat. Add shredded kale and water to create steam. Toss kale in pot until it turns vibrant green; set aside to cool. In large bowl, mix ricotta cheese with mushroom mixture, kale, pesto and spice blend. In casserole dish, spread about 1/2 cup marinara on bottom. Then one-by-one, stuff each pasta shell with approximately 2 tablespoons ricotta mixture and add to casserole dish. Repeat with remaining shells. Cover shells with remaining marinara and mozzarella cheese. Cover casserole dish with foil and bake 20 minutes. During final 5 minutes, remove foil so mozzarella can brown. Garnish with fresh herbs and salt and pepper, to taste.
